One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you very much, Mr. Houston. Um, all right. Uh, let us, uh, no recess. Is that in the beginning? Yes, >> at the end. Okay. So we don't need one in the beginning. We don't require an exact session in the beginning. We will push that to the end. All right. Agenda questions. Please limit your questions at this time to resolutions under new business under this on this agenda. As a matter of fairness, you're asked to limit your questions to no more than one and

your remarks to no longer than three minutes. If you are here representing a group, please identify yourself, the group, and your position in the group. If you're here as an individual, please provide us your name and address. The section of public participation will be limited to 15 minutes. All right. I need a motion to open the meeting to the public. Mr. Gallow, second by Mr. Dilva. We are officially open to the public. Seeing no one coming forward at this time, I need a motion to close the meeting to the public. Mr. Copeland, second by Miss Ting Jansen. All right. our MAWA student representative report this evening. Happy new year. >> Happy new year. Starting off, senior league was canceled on the 22nd due to the um snow day. >> They preferred the snow. >> I'm

not in charge of that. >> You want to go Easter egg hunting? I love that. I love that. >> Uh, next up, the winter sports are all in season and performing really well. And lastly, our talent show is on this Friday the 9th at 7 p.m. and it is the senior's biggest class fundraiser. >> Wonderful. Great. Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate your report this evening. >> Um, Dr. Durro, superintendent report. >> I got a rebound from that one. I know >> you love some elves. It disappointed. >> Uh okay. Um we've already shared our preliminary architectural renderings with the board of education and the broader community. Uh these early visuals helped introduce the scope and intent of the proposed projects. As a result, there is already an understanding of the larger

improvements being considered across the district. We have finalized the official referendum logo which will serve as a consistent visual identity throughout the campaign. This logo will appear onformational materials and outreach communications in the coming weeks as we approach the March 10th vote. It will help the community easily recognize referendum related information. We are planning approximately 20formational sessions to ensure the community has access to clear and accurate information. These sessions will provide detailed overviews of the proposed projects and allow for questions and discussion opportunities will be offered across the district and community to maximize participation and engagement. You'll see that there is a copy of this image at your places. We're also going to have this listed on our website and especially our uh referendum information site as well. So, as a reminder, the referendum will

be presented to voters as two separate questions. Uh this evening, we will share an overview of the projects connected to each question. And even more importantly, uh what we are going to be sharing with the board and the community is aligned with our final drafts of our project renderings. Question one focuses on district-wide maintenance, repairs, and infrastructure needs, while question two centers on larger additions and programmatic enhancements. The architect incorporated feedback provided by the board of education trustees. Based on that input, the proposed new gymnasium at Ma High School would be located near the existing tennis courts. This placement is more clearly obvious in relation to the existing high school structure and will allow for efficient use of space while maintaining continuity with the current campus layout. As we previously shared, the interior of the

new gymnasium would accommodate approximately 1,000 spectators. This rendering illustrates how the space could look during the high school athletic event. In addition to the main court, the project would include a training room, team rooms, um, and locker rooms, which are not shown in this image. This rendering more clearly illustrates the window design along the side facade of the high school building. Uh, it also highlights the visual connection between the exterior and the lobby that leads into the auditorium. These design elements help enhance both functionality and natural light. And if you enter uh the lobby, uh the final rendering shows how the space could function during a typical school day. Uh the windows are depicted more accurately, allowing for increased natural light and visibility. The result is a welcoming open area that feels expansive and inviting.

And as we've shared, uh this space would hold approximately 900 people. The auditorium would receive all new seating to improve comfort and accessibility. Updates would also be made to the stage precinium um and precinium enhancing functionality for performances and assemblies. In addition, lighting and sound would be upgraded to support modern programming needs. The turf renderings uh identify several key components of the project. Uh these include new perimeter fencing and upgrade to LED lighting. The images also provide context for the proposed location of the field within the existing site. >> So you'll see here, I believe the the board trustees were were sharing that they were kind of hard to see. So the architect obviously in the new renderings added those labels for Ramper Ridge and Betsy Ross Schools. Question one addresses a series of necessary

upgrades, repairs, and replacements. Question two focuses on adding turf and field lighting at the Rambo Ridge soccer field at Betsy Ross School. Question two would include a new gymnasium, library media center, music room, and small group instruction classrooms. This updated turf field rendering improves upon the initial draft by more clearly labeling key features. The placement of field lighting and fencing is now easier to understand, and these enhancements help better communicate the full scope of the project. For Betsy Ross, the exterior rendering of the proposed Bessie Ross gymnasium reflects a consistent architectural aesthetic with the existing building. Also illustrates a potential outdoor learning space adjacent to the structure. The ribbon of windows is more clearly defined, reinforcing both design cohesion and natural light. The interior of the Betsy Ross Gymnasium highlights its flexibility for multiple uses.

The design supports physical education, assemblies, and community activities. Appropriate finishes and design elements are included to create a functional yet welcoming environment. The library media center rendering showcases the potential of this space to support modern student learning. Uh, flexible seating and learning zones allow for collaboration, independent study, and small group instruction. Uh, decorative elements add visual interest while maintaining a purposeful academic atmosphere. This this rendering of changed very little from from the initial at George Washington School. Question one focuses on essential infrastructure improvements. These include the replacement of selected windows, boiler upgrades, and repointing of exterior brick work. Question two would provide the school with a new gymnasium to support instructional and extracurricular needs. So if we look on the exterior, the rendering of the proposed George Washington Gymnasium features a modern architectural design. The

rendering provides a clearer sense of where the addition would be located relative to the existing building and the placement maintains campus flow while expanding usable space. And lastly, uh this updated interior rendering emphasizes the scale and openness of the new gymnasium. The space is designed to physical education classes, assemblies, and events. As we saw in the Betsy Ross School gymnasium rendering, the inclusion of a stage further enhances its versatility for school and community use. So, as Dr. As shared, um we have a number of meetings uh throughout the community. We're committed to um ensure that all of our community members are informed on the projects and the opportunities uh connected to the projects. Um we have around 20 meetings that are scheduled between January and March. Uh we've already had a number of meetings um

with teachers today. Most recently, we had a meeting with the MAWA um music boosters and sports boosters. I felt like it was a very productive meeting. There were great questions and interest in what is to come. Um, and as I said, it's really important that we do our very best to get out into the community, not just the school-based community, but the community as a whole. So, as you can I'm not sure how much you can see the detail here, but within that chart, you'll see opportunities within the HSOS. You'll see opportunities with connecting with community groups, and you'll also see opportunities for us to connect with our seniors. Um, as I said, um, every person in the community is entitled to that information, and it's my hope that I'm able to deliver that information

to them. Um, and the information and materials that we're producing, uh, will allow them to have access real time to all of that information. So, I look forward to, we look forward to engaging with the community um, not only within the school district, but the community at large to share this information with them for the March 10th vote. >> We've also highlighted the two town halls on this list. um quite purposefully because this is an opportunity for anyone in the town whether you are a parent of a student in the district or you are resident of Ma Township uh to uh attend and uh we will be sending out communication this Friday uh to everyone related to uh the when and the where um and Mr. Copan assisted us in creating the flyer. So, thank

you for your assistance with that and um yeah, we look we look forward to uh the collaboration. >> Okay, thank you Dr. Jurro and Dr. Fair. A combined report. Thank you very much. All right. Um and uh our business administrator, Miss Hiramoto, uh your report this evening. >> Um I just want to start off I saying happy new year and congratulations and welcome to our new board members. Um you'll notice on our board agenda there are no committees currently listed. So the committees will be established following our meeting. Um they will be on our next January 1st board meeting. I also wanted to discuss how the business office is in the midst of our calendar year end financial processing. So this includes the preparation and filing of W2 forms, 1099 forms, 1095C healthc care coverage

statements, as well as our quarterly state and federal financial reports. This is always a very busy period for the department, and I want to thank the business office staff for their continued accuracy and attention to detail during this process. Um, I'd also like to provide an update on the facilities and maintenance work completed over the winter break. Our supervisor of buildings and grounds, Gregory Romero, coordinated a series of important preventative maintenance and improvement projects, including districtwide HVAC quarterly filter changes, grease trap cleaning, kitchen sewer line jetting, right to know building inspections. Um, there were a bunch of different projects and thankfully Mr. Romero confirmed that all scheduled projects were successfully completed during the break. So, I wanted to say we appreciate the efforts of our buildings and ground staff for ensuring that this work was

completed safely and efficiently while school was not in session. And that wraps up my report. >> Thank you very much, Miss Yamoto. Um, Dr. Far, do you have additional report for us this evening? >> I don't have a formal uh report, but I just want to uh bring the board's attention to agenda item 24 C. Uh typically when we have last minute uh recommendations for hires, I send out an email to the board providing with additional information on the candidate that would typically be in my personal memo. Um this hire took place officially like five minutes before we printed the agenda for all of you. So, I just want you just wanted to bring to your attention that uh we believe in this candidate and we are excited that we're able to fill it for

the remainder of the school year >> 23 >> 24. So, you also have that that potential staff members resume. Thank you. >> Thank you, Dr. Fair. All right. Um, my report this evening, um, well, I'm gonna repeat myself a little. So, first off, um, I'm, uh, humbled and grateful to be selected by my colleagues to serve another year as president of this amazing group of individuals. To have earned her trust and respect once again and to be given the opportunity to provide guidance and leadership to our board excites me tremendously. I also look forward to working cooperatively with our central office team, Dr. Durro, Dr. Fair, um Miss Hiramoto, um Miss Craft, and Miss Rizzo. Mrs. Rizzo, sorry, Miss Mrs. Sorry, Miss Rizzo. Um, congratulations uh also to my um vice presidents, our first vice

president uh Rick Dilva and second vice president Ben Kismarski, my fellow board members uh Janine Ting Jansen, Brett Coplin, Michael Gallow, Trista Davinir, Christopher Hughes and uh who is our incumbent also elected and welcome to our newest board member Steve Houston. Uh congratulations and and welcome I want to take a moment to truly thank each of you for your selfless dedication and volunteering your time to be a board member. Uh we have many years of experience and leadership on this board which allows us to work effectively and collaboratively collaboratively for our district uh and for the best interests of our students. We look forward to working together to achieve our board goals in 2026 uh including the successful planning and execution of a district referendum and ensuring that our policies and regulations are up to

date. So we have a very busy start as you can see from Dr. Far and Dr. Toro's report uh and the number of outreach uh opportunities that we will be doing between now uh and March 10th. Um there's a tremendous amount happening uh as we prepare for this special election that will be held on March 10th. Uh asking the voters of Malawa to carefully consider the bond referendum that we are proposing. Um, I thought I would just give a little snippet of what is a bond referendum and why why why why are we doing this? So, there's these are a few points to think about. Um, we're asking you as voters uh for permission to borrow money uh through the sale of bonds to finance largecale improvements in our district. Um, this provides uh upfront

funding and it spreads the cost for us over several years. Um, it qualifies for specific state aid. You're going to hear about a lot of this continuing to offset some of these costs. So, some of this money comes back to us. Um, and it's kind of similar. I like the analogy of a home equity loan that you might take on your own personal home to finance improvements. Um it's sort of that for the school district. Uh perhaps a little larger. We have a maybe larger home equity loan we're taking and asking for. Uh but a similar concept. So again, I think um you're going to continue to hear about um why we're doing this and and what this is all about. Um there are multiple multiple opportunities to get information. Uh we really encourage everyone

to please come out, get the information, ask questions, um and make an educated vote and and that's what we're hopeful for in this process. Um at any point you can reach out to any of us as board members. We all have emails. We all have individual emails. So again, um we uh look forward to the next few months, but it is going to be a busy ride for all of us. So, thank you very much. Um, lastly, I leave you with a few words to ponder as we start 2026. Start by doing what's necessary, then do what's possible, and suddenly you'll be doing the impossible. So, uh, anyway, happy and healthy new year to everyone. Um, and, uh, have an amazing, uh, restart to this school year. All right. Thank you very much. Um, do

I have uh any board committee reports? Any final reports? I know many of the committees will still be continuing, but if anyone has want an opportunity, Mr. Copan. >> Yeah, two quick things. Um, just want to remind everyone, I sent the board an email earlier today about all the presentations that Dr. Fair and Dr. Duro mentioned. Um, we want as many board members that can attend these presentations to attend while keeping in mind the core rules. So, please go through your calendars, look through the Outlook invites that were sent and update that as RSVP. Uh, if you don't respond, we're just going to assume you're not coming, but if you can attend, please let us know so we could ensure that we only have four of us there. Um, secondly, I want to remind everyone

on the board as well as everyone in the public that's watching this that our next four board member board meetings will be at our school. So, next one will be at the ridge, then GW, Betsy Ross, and at the high school to highlight uh some of the projects that we'll be proposing in the referendum. So, please uh note, you know, notice that and uh make whatever adjustment you need to make on your calendar. That's it. Thank you. >> Go all the way to GW. >> Yes. Thank you, Mr. >> I will I will send you I will I will send you directions how to get over there. Yes, >> we have two special passes to cross the border. >> And I think I guess technically Mr. Copel that's in your position as the the uh

community relations chairperson from last year but but uh thank you for providing yes your final report but thank you for um providing uh continued information on the behalf of community relations. Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> Um, all right. Do we have board member remarks at this point? Any additional comments? >> Mr. Galla, >> just quickly, I I just want to thank Dennis for putting this out. This is very helpful. Um, but also one of the resources we haven't mentioned about the referendum is our website. The website is chocked full of of stuff. Um, many of the things that you see on our website will be repeated at the at the town meetings. Um, bring it up. He's bringing it up. Please go ahead. >> The referendum website is fabulous. Um if if you just

follow along in the tabs and you drill down, I mean, you're going to get 99% of your questions should be be able to be answered from that uh website. If you have questions that are synthesis of what's there, I'm sure you know we can handle those as well. I think there's a place where you can submit your questions. Yes. >> On the website. Um, but a lot of work went into from our communications, open consultant, our admin team, um, the community relations folks did a lot of hard work on this. The website's fantastic. >> Um, so it's out there. >> Good. Thank you. That's a good reminder. Thank you, Mr. Gallo. Any other comments? Mr. Coughlin? >> Just want to welcome Steve to the board. Looking forward to work working with you. And uh, also

just want to extend uh, my deepest condolences to the Gallo family for the loss of Vickiy's mom. Thank you. >> Good. >> Yeah. All good. >> Okay. All right. Let's uh move on to uh old business.
