It's called Okay. Good evening, Mr. Manila. Thank you so much. Also want to take the opportunity to thank board members, all the board members for allowing time in the busy agenda to share community in this forum. And at this point, I will happily turn the program over to our director, Trisha Wilder. She has selected today I'm free. Heaven help me. [Applause] For those of you who seen me before that see, you know, I hate skipping out of that to start. Um,
but I've heard politics is theater, so it figures I'm in both places now. Good evening. My name is David Cro and I play the role of Reverend Shaw. The story of Foot Loose centers around a small town where dancing is the bad and one determined teenager sets out to change that, reminding everyone that joy, connection, and music can bring people together even in the face of challenges. In addition to tonight's presentation, we've been actively engaging with the community by sharing several music numbers from the show. We've gone to Brookside's PTA, the Genn PTA, and the Plaza PTA. So, it's great to come back here. We did our board preview here last year as well. So, it's good to keep that tradition going. We've had the privilege of performing at those PTA meetings and bringing the
message of this production to our Baldwin families and neighbors. We also heard the positive responses when we brought up the students from the middle school to have a small role of newsies two years ago. So, we decided to do that again. This year, we brought up six of our lead boys from the middle school musical Wanda Jr. and they'll be adding more harmony to one of our music numbers. And we also brought up some middle school students who participated in our summer theater program to be part of the church choir in the show. We're looking to build a bridge in our theater program and bringing these younger students in is a perfect way to do that. Though they're not here tonight, want to share the news with you because they'll be with us for all
four of our performances. Tonight, we're delighted to offer a sneak peek of our production with our preview I'm free/halthy which brings two powerful moments in Foot Loose together. One filled with energy and determination, other with reflection and hope. In this scene, Rhett rattles the teens of Bulmont to their independence in the hot energy anthem, I'm free. At the same time, Reverend Shaw Moore struggles with his faith and role as a father, turning to prayer in heaven help me. These two songs intertwine beautifully and share both sides of the story, the passion of youth and the wisdom of experience as the town of Bulmont begins to move toward understanding change. Get smart. Mr. McCormick, you and your friends are late. Coach, look at his arm. He's all dead. Really, it's nothing. I Please don't waste your
breath or my time with another lame excuse. It's not an excuse. Okay. Ren walked me home last night and some guys jumped in. Yeah. They were just kicking and punching and whailing on me. There were like six guys. It was three guys. Anybody you know when I didn't take names if that's what you're asking? Mr. McCormick, it seems that when you aren't making trouble, it still somehow finds you. Anyways, Ariel, I encourage you to stay away from this man I didn't ask to keep my eye on you. Oh, so my father calls. Surprise, surprise. And if you cooperate, it'll make all of our lives much easier. Gee, if my daddy falls, will you get off of my back? That mouth of yours is probably the major daddy down in the first place. Count to 10,
mama sis. Count to 10. You'd be wise to take your friend's advice. Ariel, get back to practice. And McCormick, get down and give me 30. You're joking. You're right. Make it 50. Fran's not faking. He's really hurting. Thank you for your diagnosis, Dr. Miller. You can get down to give me 50 as well. As a matter of fact, all of you can give me 50 courtesy of your friend McCormick here. Just do it. Okay. One, two, I can't hear you. Three, four, only 46 more. Six. Is he gone yet? Hey, thanks so much. I'm sorry. Just everything in this damn town is so wound up. Hey man, don't place the ball off any ste back to Chicago. At least be at like clubs. Maybe you ought to take the coach dancing. Wait, wait. That's it.
What? We're going to throw a dance. We're going to throw a party that's so awesome it's going to blow Bulmont right off its track. You're just asking for a fight. Bring it on. Get ready to face. I'll take on anyone. But what about the town council? I'll fight you all. Well, if there's anything worth fighting for, it's freedom. [Applause] [Music] See, I'm crossing the line, jumping the track, taking what's mine. Now I'm looking back. [Music] Every day I face a new frontier. I can't worry what the world may say. I may or [Music] I'm free. You're not free. You're crazy. I am not crazy. See, there's a law in Bmont, and it needs changing. Hello. Never going to let us forget about this body. We're done. How much longer are we going to live under
this shadow? There has to be a way out of this. Only way out. No. Listen. [Music] Oh no. [Music] We cannot be found. See, we're shaking up, making our breaks, taking control. That's what it takes. Heaven helps the man who fights his fear. We can face it down right now. Right here. While you're standing on your own, [Music] I'm free. Come on, try it. I'm free. The Lord hear your voice. I pray. Yeah. [Music] Taking control. That's what it takes. [Music] [Music] Heavens who fight his [Music] face down right here. Maybe we can finally write this wrong. [Music] And now word comes to me that some of the young people in our community wish to change our laws and throw a dance. This morning let's remind ourselves this law is not about dancing. This law
is a tribute. A tribute to the young people who held the prize of Bowmont. We can't face our [Music] [Applause] [Music] making for heaven's sake. [Applause] We will be happy. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I agree. [Applause] [Applause] Sorry, I forgot about this. You know, I was so caught up in the dancing and backstage. Maybe the record got you, too. Thank you so much for allowing us to perform for you tonight. And we hope this performance gave you a taste of the excitement and heart behind our full production of Foot Loose the musical. We invite you all to come out and show your support on Thursday, November 20th at 400 p.m. Friday, November 21st at 700 p.m. and Saturday, November 22nd at 2 and 700 p.m. respectively. If you come to all four, get
a second prop. Can't tell you what just uh you know, you see me after the show, check down your appointment. One, two, three, four. I'll figure it out. Don't worry. With that said, I'll hand the program back to the board, which means myself and everyone down there. Have a great night. Thank you for coming. Right behind the Oh my god. I can't do any that qualifies. Performance record. Thank you. Congratulations to a talented group of kittens. One more time. This is Broadway. definitely have some talent with you and how many purchas Sorry. shortly. Um so locally I to the volunteer center which is our special ed organization and it's great to be on those meetings where um our teachers are interested in and the new um types of concepts that they're teaching and that they
want to get improve bills and they can bring that to our kids. Um the the biggest thing I spent time on and most of us did this past month was to go to New York State school books convention. So luckily it's right here in New York City. Um we got a lot of great uh we got a lot of great professional education. Um, one of the highlights for me was uh this fellow on the school board in Byron Hills. Um, he actually teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He wrote the book why school boards matter. So 15 minutes try to explain to us why matter pointing out the problem that there were places where actually it's interesting. Um, I have a coworker who is on a school board in a town because it's
quite wealthy, but when she saw the support that we got from all of you on school appreciation month, she was like, "Your community likes you guys." She's like, "I don't think our community likes us." You know, they're always Also, one of the real highlights for me was driver. She was a sister. She um started her husband trying to get soiety. said about I was in a board meeting and I think we all left uh activated by the fact of sometimes we are focusing on exams and what it means to people in school but the kindness and dignity is also one of the most important parts that the takeway the other uh session that I wanted to speak on was bridging the skills gap thrive workforce development as you all know we have our program here
uh when seniors get to do apprentichip school year and that's what so right so the senior experience and it was always great when you go to these sessions you hear what they're doing uh well and hear how other districts are doing them as well and talk about different career readiness pathways and collaborating between school higher education and local businesses all the things that we actually currently One thing that they did speak on is uh how do they and when we talk about the 16 program education program at Schubert, they do this uh market labor market data research to see what type of jobs are out there that have a need or have a high demand. And they've also integrated that data with student interest and survey the students. a town hall with the students as
well to determine what they would like to do. They added um grooming like animal grooming to their platform because that was one of the um items that students had a strong desire for. So it was interesting to hear how they go about selecting programs each program. That's all about so I have to say that I enjoyed I enjoyed this year's uh conference. I always enjoy it, but this year was exceptional and um I came back with a lot of good information and just a couple sessions I want to touch on and one was about AI policies. I've taken sessions before on the technology itself and still as confused as as ever, but AI policies in school districts um you know very very important um you know and and what so a few of the things
that they brought up in this was very important thing that we have to keep in mind is the digital divide in a policy because not all kids have the same access, right to technology to the internet when when they are at home. Um so so that can make it very difficult and even though there is no there's no oversight yet on AI as we know and even though it's not likely that the information is incorrect, none of it is being vetted yet and of course that that is concerning. Um and 42% of students in districts that already have AI policies setting that the policies are not cleared. Um, you know, the biggest uh breakdown is when and how it is okay for them to use AI. And I think that we always have to remember
that policy should empower and equip not confuse and restrict. So you know this is something that I think going forward we will need to have more discussion on. Uh and then the second one I wanted to speak briefly on was a session on students on the border. um a lot of students there. So, a lot of districts, this is new for us this year, but there are a lot of districts that have have already been doing this for a while. And um the majority of students who have participated in this say that they feel that there needs to be more training. So again, that is something that we need to consider and and discuss. And they also talked about so the way we did it in this district was we had the students elect the
the student board member. In a lot of other districts they have administration pick the student. Um I personally like the way that we did it right. that are picked by their their own student body, by their peers. But one thing was brought up that again I think is something that we need to give some thought to and that is possibly having two student members, one that is a junior and one that is a senior because that way as the senior graduates obviously junior moves up and so there's there's always somebody that can mentor the other student and and and help them through the process and help them to understand it. And so I thought that that seemed like a a very good idea again in in moving forward. Um, and then my favorite part, so
I don't know if any of you ever watch um on Fridays um um on CBS Mornings, Steve Hartman does kindness 101 and and this is this is something that he does uh with his kids and they do these special pieces about different kindness stories. although he was the closing speaker and there with his kids and um it was such an impactful presentation. Um there was not a dry eye in this place and it was just incredible and so I was very proud and happy to have been able to be a part of this entire um event. in school. Okay. So, lastly, I've had the opportunity to attend the workshop and it was uh mastering the art and science of asking the questions. We talk a lot about policies and different um situations uh regarding placement,
student placements. And this workshop talked about the five types of governance and in relation to mindset questions. Um we looked at theformational questions, the intentions, the cause and the meaning. And we were able to I was actually able to uh speak with a superintendent from Syracuse. And we put this into practice, the mindset of asking questions and uh we came up with chronic absenteeism and how does that relate to our district for example? So how does our district currently track and report the crime of absenteeism? What does the success look like in reducing absenteeism? And finally, what is the cost to sustain like the strategies? Do we have someone that's tracking it or do we have like a um what is it the a system where like a power school system that collects the data?
And we looked at this because it it just shows you that you are you're analyzing a problem. We're not just coming up with the decisions, but what we are talking about is the board and we have those thoughtful discussions having been public. Um, and we try to the the focus is on equity of all of our students and continuous improvement within the district. So, that was interesting. So sometimes you just see us up here and you're wondering, okay, well, how did they come about that decision? But it's it's thoughtful discussion during our meetings. So we, you know, I really enjoy speaking to someone who's not necessarily close to our district, but all the way up in Syracuse and how different districts approach different uh uh you know, situation. So all it was a product of
the conference. Yes. Yeah. I just wanted to mention unfortunately I had conflict this year so I couldn't attend but I'm so glad and this year looking forward to hearing about that chance and what well I think the u I think the musical reputation we uh we just had showed we've been really busy at all high school Mr. You mentioned sports are wrapped up. We have shrew right now performing arts are really getting our first concert um just after our October meeting which is our choir and orchestra. Now we have our musical coming up at the end of November and then there's going to be a whole wave of concerts open district. So that's of all that's one big thing when it comes to performing arts. I think it's a great display with all the kids
who are here today. I mean they're so so unbelievable talent. Not speaking myself. I mean, I've seen some of these kids, as I mentioned, they were newies. So, during the middle school program, and they've come up, and I feel we've done a great job of that. And as a senior, this is my fourth and final year of school. I know Miss Waller, you've been with us for all four years. And the program has gotten like better and better each year. I think everyone in the community knows it. And we're rallying behind the program very well. So, I want to thank you and the entire team for your efforts. is very our superintendent advisory council had its first meeting also after our October board meeting. So that's comprising students of all grades and it's sort of
acting as a think tank and thinking new ideas to improve the student environment from students perspective. So again like thank you. It's a great initiative and um I'm also very interested in the certification idea you mentioned. So I'd like to talk to you about that in further depth because that's a huge thing to get students career ready. That's another pivotal step in making sure high school gives all the opportunities for students to progress to their outside life. Our student government had its elections and those just wrapped up. Funny enough, three of our executive board members on the student government performed tonight. So we had our president Leends, our vice president, Via Smith, and our treasurer India Clark. They were all on the stage here. and it shows those are the active students. They're looking to
make a change and they're involved in our program. So, I think that's another wonderful thing and you can see that that activity is on full display. So, our students are running some fundraisers, some of donations for Hurricane Melissa. It's our key club, our National Honor Society, Asian Heritage Club, and I believe our student government is getting involved as well. All from student le initiatives at the high school and it's been a busy busy couple of months. Some of us caught it, some not, but overall still making some great strides as we head towards what's going on. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Thank you, David. Okay, so we are at the comment section. So public discussion on matters relating to staff and students of which their reputation, privacy or rights to due process for those of
others could in some way be violated is prohibited. The public comment portion of this meeting will be limited limited to residents, business owners or employees for the Baldwin School District and is limited to a maximum of three minutes per person. We do not answer have an answer to your question or we need to contact you with further details. The information you provide on the index card will be essential and we'll follow up We do have one um I think it's a a comment says um gra a message of gratitude to the district for
the den denial recognition. Yes recognition. All right. Did you want to speak? Good evening, superintendent. I'm sorry. Could you just give us your name, please? Thank you. Start with that short. My name is I am at 994 Bill Driveman, New York. Zip code is 115. I've had the honor of being a resident of this town for 30 years and I am, as I like to say, Baldwin bread. I grew up here. I went to Meadow Elementary School and then to the Baldwin Middle School and graduated from the Baldwin Senior High School. Great pride, class of 2008. So good evening to the superintendent to president me every board and fellow I'm going to make this super agree I wanted to take this opportunity I wanted to take this opportunity to express our gratitude I'm saying our
this gratitude does not only come with me but I'm speaking on behalf of parents teachers administr administrators and even students who were very delighted to experience a busy similar to David a busy October as we celebrated volume throughout the school district. None of this is possible without the support of administrators and when we have supporting staff that encourage not that helped to bring our slogans to life. We are inclusive. We are We are diverse. We are vulnerable. Having the privilege to grow up here, I've also got to see firsthand how incredible this transformation has been for our town. And I'm very excited about we now have a board and staff and staff in all our schools that support inclusivity not only in a slogan but in our learning whether that's cultural learning, the arts, in
music and of course in our education. So um I really really just wanted to take this time as being recognized by the Baldwin School District and Miss Mary who came to witness Meadows inaugural Dwali assembly. It meant so much not only to me as the presenter and co-chair, my fellow co-chair is also here, Miss Vei Singh, but to so many parents and so many students that were there hearing their expression of gratitude from kindergarten students all the way to seniors in high school. This is what community is. and the fact that we've been work together to collaborate and make change, it says a lot about who we are. And I'm just really grateful to have been given this opportunity and I'm really looking forward to see where that representation goes forever. Thank you. Thank you
for sharing those words. And yes, we are inclusive and we are open. So, thank you for taking the time to come out and share that.
