our regular meeting whether or not to approve the exemption uh based on the new uh income level so I don't know if anyone has any they want to say about it J present anything at all I was just say yes Dr Robinson could you uh give us a little bit of information on what the implications of this are sure so anytime there's a an exemption that's considered um it's critical for the district of assessed value so that turns out to be uh $10.78 per year and there were approximately 23 additional homeowners that would now be eligible based on the new thresholds that the county provided so we've done the calculations we provided that backup information for the Board of Education um to review um I know it's been considered so if there's any questions I'd
be happy to answer thank you anybody have any input on the situation Dr Robson could you just say that was uh 20 28 23 28 new households 23 additional households that are in that are going to get the discount additional that would get the the additional households that will get the the discount because they're low-income senior citizens because they're in between that 37 and $58,000 R okay thank you okay yeah I think um you know in general my own personal opinion is that this particular uh exemption affects a relatively small number of people and the financial impact is uh not large so I guess inclination uh unless anybody has any objections uh is to approve it uh we will be voting on it during the regular uh agenda of the meeting um I always feel
I'm the kudin who has to say out loud that these are always um something we need to talk about in public because any exemption means that the taxes are then redistributed among the rest of us so we do have to be very concerned and careful uh that we appro when we approve these that we're not impacting the rest of the community too severely but I think you know everybody the consensus seems to be that this is a relatively small impact so we'll be voting on it during the course of the meeting and I Mr if I could just add the Nassau County has determined a January second deadline for notification um and uh if approv the exemption would apply to the 2425 fiscal year thank you thank you okay okay I am reluctant to start
the meeting early don't think you can yeah I'm going to have to wait until I thought we would have more of a conversation and I wanted to make sure that anyone that was here for the discussion about the uh exemption would be here for the conversation so I apologize but we're going to just wait a few minutes until 8:00 so so that we can start the meeting promptly thank you Deber 1st 1991 chapter 9 of the laws of 1991 require that we inform persons other than students who attend meetings within a school of the proper procedures to evacuate in an order orderly and timely manner in the event of an emergency if you must evacuate this room because of an emergency there are two exits that may be used both have a sign above the
door one exit is to the left and the other is directly behind the Das I'd like to take this opportunity to complement lenx school and the condition of the building it really is wonderful thank them for the refreshments that were provided dur during our executive session okay okay the board of uh let's see Board of Education accepts the minutes of the Board of Education meetings held on November 15 2023 as held as detailed in the Friday mailing so moved by Mr Smith seconded seconded by Mrs Green that me oh I apologize by Mrs cools all those in favor I I the Board of Education acknowledges receipt of the treasurer's report for October 2023 as detailed in Friday mailing moved by Mr Smith second seconded by Mrs DCA are there any questions all those in favor
I okay now I am going to should we do the yeah I'm going to go out of order uh and do the P first and then we'll go to the superintendent's report the P the Board of Education approves the Personnel actions report for December 133 2023 as addended and detailed in the Friday mailing moved by Mr Smith seconded by Mrs Green all those in favor I I and now I will turn the meeting over to the superintendent thank you Mrs o'hagen uh so we have approved a new position for assistant director of Wellness um and to that position um i' would like to introduce to the community Gina CIO um who will be um starting you can stand up and say hello to [Applause] everybody so for some context um I would say post pandemic
um we have clearly seen um a lot of needs on the emotional side of things um we have done I think um above and beyond uh the work um to really help our young people um in what is what was um a pretty traumatic time um we're seeing we're seeing changes to that um but what we're also seeing is what we see as a dramatic shift um and so we've put into place a lot of um programs to help our students um and our faculty and staff so one of those um we introduced a number of years ago is the Yale ruler program which is um a program that we use at the elementary level to help students self regulate their behavior we've put into at the secondary level um Community circles which really teaches
students the consequences of their actions um and also help students to um kind of make peace with um people they may have offended for example um it is less punitive which we believe in teaching our children not punishing our children um of course when we get to the point where we do have to make concept consquences we do um in addition to that we um introduced mindfulness uh at the K5 level and we've reassigned two elementary teachers who do nothing but mindfulness across all of our Elementary classrooms um which is our really taught our kids um a way of life um a way to be in touch with their feelings to understand how to regulate their feelings when they're feeling anxious or um in in any kind of distress they have tools to be able
to deal with that um so we have a lot of programs in place um the newest one um which opened this past Monday is a Wellness Center that's located at our Middle School um The Wellness Center our Middle School is servicing our students prek through grade 12 um it is a collaboration between Baldwin schools and PM Pediatrics and it's completely funded by a grant that we received by former congresswoman Kath rice um this will take us uh four years um going forward starting this year with this Wellness Center so the wellness center um the recommendations come internally from our faculty um and there is an explicit process to get to the point where um our young people are being seen by um social workers um and and other emotional support Personnel um our schools work
with the students and the fam to get these additional resources um some of those resources are individual counseling um they're family counseling um play therapy and things of that nature um the center is open Monday through Thursday from 10 to 10 to 7 Friday 10: to 5: and Saturday from uh 9 to 12 um again it's completely funded with a grant from former congresswoman Kathleen Rice um and those program programs in addition to others that um that we have in place are going to be overseen by Ms CIO um so you can see the breath of this um the investment in this position is really an investment in our students because we recognize that from now until probably forever um added to what schools do um is not only the academic Wellness of our kids
but it's the emotional Wellness of our kids as well um so onf of the board and the community I want to welcome Miss Cario to our Baldin family um we have really really high hopes for the work that you will do um with our students and our families our faculty and staff um it really just emphasizes our belief um that the whole child is the whole child um and this is a really important component exaggerated these days um but it's an important component to what we do so welcome welcome welcome and for your own emotional health you are welcome to go home now do you want to do the rest of your report do you have any other things I do do you want me to okay um so um Mrs o'hagen has asked me
to complete my report um we have a lot of amazing things that have gone on in the last month and a half or so um one of the most exciting pieces of um news is that Bal High School received notice from the college board that we were given an AP designation of silver with access um those are for schools that are recognized on the AP honor role and they have to meet certain criteria um the criteria is that there is a College culture where 40% or more of students from the graduating cohort took at least one AP exam during High School where 25% or more of the graduating cohorts or three or higher on at least one AP exam and where 2 % or more of the graduating cohort took five or more AP exams
with at least one in grade nine or 10 um the distinction is really the direct result of the really really hard work of Mr manella who is here tonight I'm Dr teser our high school principal Dr Pap Andrea who is our high school assistant principal um all of our supervisors guidance counselors and the High School faculty um who have challenged our students to take AP courses um we believe that to be prepared and research Bears out that to be prepared for college it's always in the best interest of students to attempt college level courses while in high school so that they have the support of their parents and the and the school Community um and so we're really proud of that designation um I'm also thrilled to share that um because of the persistence and
vision of our very own trustee Annie duresa um our baldon schools will partner with the national natural Diamond Council and black and jewelry to start a program that will explore the jewelry industry from bench to design um so what we have seen is there is a real lack of what we've seen not what you've seen um is that there's a real lack of um future employees and current employees in the jewelry industry and so we are partnering um with um natural Diamond Council and black and jewelry um to start a program that will teach our students from the bench um to the design of jewelry um the program is to start at Baldwin high school at Schubert and hopefully grow into Baldwin high school as well um I'm also um thrilled to announce I'm allow
to announce right that um that there is a $100,000 grant that is coming to Baldwin as a result of truste dca's hard work um to begin the program so um other uh news for the community to know uh the Blue Ribbon commission which was a commission um that was um put into place by our commissioner our state education commissioner Betty Rosa um made recommendations for the future of the high school diploma um so just to give you a sense of some of the recommendations that were made by the blue ribon commission um in addition to traditional assessments upon completion of high school um they are widening their um their scope of uh assessment options and adding performance-based assessments as exit criteria these are recommendations they're not part of the regulations yet um they are looking
to add or change curriculum that requires skilled competency included in civic responsibility cultural competence financial literacy stem fine and Performing Arts writing for real and uh Career Tech education I can tell you that I'm on a little bit of a march on my own to get added to this list L um media literacy um there is an emphasis on cultural responsive pedagogy and a review of all existing learning standards um the expectation is that we're going to see some change in requirements uh in three years from now uh some more good news um our high school regularly um hosts on-site admissions for local colleges um and so to give you a sense of the success of our guidance department and of our students um St John's University came to the high school this year and
of 16 students that interviewed with them 14 were given immediate acceptance the other two students um needed to just complete another part of their application um six students were admitted to the honors program of the 14 accepted students they were collectively offered over $450,000 in scholarships with 12 of those students received receiv receiving over $30,000 a year in scholarships if I can [Applause] yeah we've posted uh a number of other colleges since um and the results are very similar to that and so that gives really um I mean it's exceptional um but in addition to that it gives our students um right away um very real options um and lots of possibilities and and and universities and colleges to choose from um just some student successes are if we went through all of them we
would be here all night um but some of these are really above and beyond so um our Student Success continues in Baldwin Baldwin High School seniors Angela feni and Ari Guera were recognized as outstanding physical education students um at the Nassau zone of the New York State Association of health physical education Recreation and dance so we congratulate them I believe one of them is here tonight I'm not going to embarrass her um there's also great news coming from our FR and Performing Arts Department Julia tefley and Brandon fth have been nominated for the Roger Reese Awards which is the Regional High School Musical Theater award program for the greater New York City area students performing an eligible roles in their School Musical are reviewed by a team of credentialed adjudicators to determine two students from
each school to continue in the process to become one of the 50 nominees selected for the Roger Reese awards for outstanding performer in a musical of these 50 nominees two will be selected to represent the greater New York City region in the National High School Musical Theater Awards also known as the Jimmy Awards very clap Aaron Ashby um as attending the conference performance and Paul Clement alternate have been accepted to the uh the New York State band Directors Association honor band members of the Baldwin High School concert choir and cast of newbies performed at the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce tree lighting ceremony members of the concert choir performed at Applebee's toys for toss Drive Mela Rodriguez and Gabriella Lucas have been accepted to perform in a treble Chorus at Carnegie Hall and finally this year's
drama performance is an an adaptation of The Princess Bride and a scheduled for March 21st 22nd and 23rd in cafeteria B that's my report that is mighty impressive okay um reports from the board let's do other things and then we'll do the conference stuff gotta on reports yeah yeah we on reports whatever anybody has attended no I was I'm sorry I was just saying the let's do the other things we've done during the month and then we'll talk about the the convention and the things that we did at the convention does anyone do you have anything for this month sure so this time of the year of course is when we have the pleasure of going to the different holiday performances throughout the district and I have to say it's probably my favorite part of
being on the school board there's nothing like getting to go and watch all of these beautiful amazing young people perform feel proud of themselves especially the little ones have nothing like watching those faces and the first thing they do is come out and they look nervously for their person and the way their faces light up as soon as they see their person it it just warms your heart and it's a wonderful experience and again so honored to be able to do that so that's what we have been uh doing pretty much for this month and that will continue we still have some concerts left and that's all I have any P anything I'll just Echo to what you said um my first concert was here I had the privilege of attending Lennox fourth and fifth
grade um performance um it was a great opportunity to see the music teachers that my children had at Brookside um also to see the the talent of these uh young students the presentation it's it's always um great we always say Baldwin brings out the best in in all of our performers and I'm looking forward to the next performance of Middle School and um The High School uh just to Echo what my colleagues have said I've got to go to uh Meadows kindergarten first incredibly cute and and even if I'm not a board trustee in a couple years it's like a fun thing i' want to still do see these little kids singing their little Christmas and Hanukkah songs and um and then I got to hear Mrs D's son play the drum at the seventh
grade concert which um that was that was was fun too and uh High School concerts coming up uh ditto to what everyone said I attended lennox's uh fourth and fifth grade concert as well as the middle school it's always great to see and hear how they sound in elementary school and then how they sound in Middle School um so that's a great progression um in addition to that I attended the tournament in memory of Anthony Balden who's a former um assistant the basket World coach for the girls team so it was great to just hear the speeches and the conversations and see a lot of the alumni students come out um and support of that tournament so that was um also a great uh moment for that weekend so that's all that I have and
me too I of course been sent to some of the winter concerts but I wanted to say about the musical which was fabulous just incredible uh the dancing this the talent I I said to a couple people there oh oh no you brought the those kids are professionals from the city or something because they it was fabulous but the piece that I wanted to make sure and mention because it doesn't always get mentioned was the sets the sets were fantastic they were complicated they were terrific and every single bit of it was done in house so we think in terms of the musical as being all about the kids that were performing but this was about the kids in the shop classes the kids in the carpentry classes learning all those other skills and I
was really I was really impressed I got a chance to see them up close they were supposed to be metal girders and uh they they were very impressive anyway that was terrific and then um Monday yes evening I attended the Baldwin foundation for Education meeting and they had a guest speaker uh Steve Carol who was the football coach here for many many years has uh written a book on Baldwin football and uh so he did a slide presentation and really talked about the history of football in Baldwin where it started where the fields were originally some of the people that were the most famous and uh it was really a lot of fun and I understand that he's working on a second book that is going to talk about the history of football all over
Long Island so he's in the process of collecting uh pictures and information uh but it was really wonderful and he had pictures the original field I think he said steel school yeah was at steel school and that everyone dressed up for the games it was yeah that's what he said they wore their Sunday vest so everybody's at the lining the fields were no bleachers so they were standing but everybody dressed women in you know the good coats and heels and yep whole thing hats it was just it was very interesting but he did a great job anyway that was a lot of fun okay um so the end of October the board attended the state school boards convention up in Buffalo and uh we attended a number of all of us attended a number of
workshops as well as uh Mr Smith uh was our representative for the business meeting so we wanted to at least give an opportunity for everybody to talk a little bit about what they saw what they learned what they might might be able to bring back to the community here I can go sure um so there were several different sessions that we participated in I'll probably highlight on um two or three one of them had to talked about addressing teacher shortage so there's a national shortage um and they talked about before you can address bringing a new teachers it's important to focus on retention keeping the ones that you have um there were a lot of stats mentioned they talked about like half half of US schools face unfilled vacancies there's an annual need of 180,000
new teachers in the next decade 35% of all teachers are going to be eligible to retire in the next 5 years but at the same time um people have they have noticed the decline in enrollment of different New York State teacher programs so while there are teachers that are retiring we're not seeing the same amount coming in um um as well um and that since the pandemic there have been 567,000 less teachers um since that time so I'm like a stats person so all this was like very very interesting to me um and then they talked about the next steps a lot of it was for rural areas but what I felt I got of it was they recommended the district um analyze their Recruitment and Retention needs and gather any feedback to Leverage um
what the strengths are of the district to at least retain um the teachers that they have uh they also another session was talking about cyber security for school districts and how it's growing in the education industry where schools are being hacked even more especially larger districts and how students are doing a lot of the hacking to prevent themselves from taking certain exams they Doos the school so they don't have to take a test um and important for cyber awareness cyber awareness training for all staffs as well as for students and the other one had to do with it was called where did all the coaches go this was really interesting to me um not only they talk about so for Nassau County there are about 40,000 athletic events and 76,000 students that participate in um
Athletics there was a recent um sportsmanship policy that was implemented and that was really to crack down on like unruly Behavior Within Sports um be it parents or students um and they've noticed that they've talked about body cams for referees in New York are in discussion because of how officials and coaches are being treated um there's a shortage in coaches because of this um coaches have been used to being home after the pandemic teachers there's a shortage in teachers which is also showing a shortage in coaches it's a domino effect um and um the what they talked about and there's a spectator code that's also in place so not also about sportsmanship but how you we as Spectators need to conduct as well and I'm I'm not sure I just highlighted it to make sure
that it's not only given to parents of athletes but just to everyone should just know what the spectator code is and they talked about the role of a board member sorry about that um having adequate security at games reviewing contracts and one thing that came out for me was a lot of the other districts talked about like a pre-season kickoff that happens depending on the season um with guidelines for parents and athletes I think that's something we can talk about um more in our meetings as a dist as a board to see how we can maybe consider having like preseason kickoffs so all the sports have this one meeting where parents are in the room students are in the room and you understand what the guidelines are for the season so that's all that I
have um I didn't go upstate with my colleagues for the uh the Schoolboard meeting but ever since the pandemic when part of the convention was done uh via Zoom they've hung on to one part um that is going to be done via Zoom permanently so that was part I could do since I couldn't travel this year um so on October 16th uh I attended the annual business meeting they called the business meeting of the uh New York school boards Association um the school boards Association represents uh all school boards throughout the state and uh 675 school boards pretty pretty big number um Mar Joe will tell me if I'm wrong but that's what I found um on this call was a zoom call with about 600 people and basically for the folks in the room
have been to like a PTA convention where you know we talk about we vote on the the um the planks the the issues that we feel strongly about it's a similar kind of um structure um we there were 32 proposed resolutions that uh the resolutions committee um was recommending uh there were 24 resolutions that the committee was not recommending um effectively there were um often one or two or sometimes five districts that would get together to propose a resolution um but not everything got uh pushed through with a recommendation by by the committee there um typically when the resolutions are in effect they're in effect for five years uh at the end of five years if we feel the purpose has been achieved then the resolution is allowed to Sunset this year there were 14
res resolutions that even though they were sunsetting were recommended to be passed you know some things like school boards oppose unfunded mandates well we're not going to stop opposing unfunded mandates and they keep showing up so that got uh voted on to say that you know we want the school boards Association to lobby for us on on that um uh there were all kinds of different ones that got into very specifics uh the specifics of um the business of the school districts um the idea of do you shift all your school buses to electric and people down state you know where where land is flat and um school buses don't travel very far like oh sure let's do that and the people who live Upstate near um the snowy border with Canada are saying we
don't think those electric school buses going to be able to get up the hills in our district and so it's very interesting to get together with people from all across the state and hear about how life's a little different in different school districts and in different parts of the state um there were uh it was interesting I don't know if there's been this many before um 23 resolutions submitted but not recommended for for adoption so there was some strong feelings by a few districts um about certain issues but when they got to the the resolutions committee which is represented by folks across the whole state um they didn't uh cross the finish line but there was discussion of all them so I think those Folks at least felt that they were heard um on their
issues so I could go on and on it was um seven and a half hours and um it was pretty interesting actually so I I look forward to doing this part next year you're going have to fight me for it yes get sign right there it is recorded yes okay it was interesting it was really interesting and most of them most of them were non-controversial um the ones that were recommended were mostly non-controversial that everybody could agree that these were positions that the state the state it was interesting that um mipa Carl Place Garden City Locust Valley Island trees and Hicksville were all together on six of the resolutions which um had to do with issues such as reinstate the religious um objection for vaccination or let the school districts um have more say over
issues uh don't let they don't want for instance the Department of Health of the state um mandating certain things some of these things are are obviously um uh the results of some some big disagreements that took place during the pandemic thank you very interesting I'll be okay panel do you have anything okay I I'll comment on one of the workshops that I attended I also um had the opportunity to go to uh Buffalo for the um board convention and one of the uh workshops um talked about Dei which is diversity equity and inclusion and how um Eastern suff bosies is taking on an in an initiative to um intentionally um focus on diversifying their staff um so that the employees are reflective in in the classrooms the students um can um interact and be taught
by um a diverse Community um they talked about how they are intentionally meeting um how they're uh focusing on different um books that and one in particular was um belonging through a culture of diversity how they're coming together as a community to to focus on um making that um real we talk about how do we do that with within our hiring process and they're um just you talked about how they're having workshops with the parents bringing in the community and um really focusing on making um a way with with this initiative so that was a very interesting uh Workshop good I just I'm just going to comment on a couple of things I went to the same uh workshop on uh officials and coaches that Annie did and I agree with everything that she said
that those are the things that I remember but I I think it was probably one of the best attended of any workshop at the whole convention it was something that everybody in the state is very concerned about um you know it it was very interesting and what I did like and what I like about a lot of these is they do give some concrete things that you can do to help the situation it's not just hand ringing about things that are going wrong it's about what could be done then in order to uh to help it uh I went to several just because our responsibilities are very broad I went to one on negotiations uh with staff I went to one on uh I also went to the one uh that Mrs Green went to
on Dei I went to one on um special education just a really overall picture of special education and what our responsibilities are as board members and uh I just I found them very worthwhile even after all these years were plenty of things that that I didn't know where I needed a refresher on so okay um at this point then we will uh have the comments from members of the community uh as usual we'll follow uh our guidelines that every person is limited to 3 minutes and we will not exceed 30 minutes for this part of the meeting so just give us a minute to collect any questions that have come in okay I'm okay it obviously there's going to be some duplicates so on the first one that I came across is uh Jasmine uh
has a question and if she would like to come to the microphone and and ask the question I'll be happy to yes um he's working oh okay what is that we love you Jasmine oh I'm sorry I I thought I thought they had had taken care of it yeah okay okay and I am the proud captain of the girl I a senior of Wal high school and and the dreams of all the young girls that will follow field hockey has been played on Turf since the 1970s yet our program still seems to be almost half a century behind this not only hinders our competition on against state rank team but also limit our personal growth and our personal confidence every year we have incredible Talent come through and move out of our progam so we
know that we have the potential for success across theard but we can't truly Thrive until there's investment made into our program we are put into at a disadvantage at every step of our season if we had a little rain the day before our field was flooded and we couldn't were un practice without at least three girls twisting their ankles if the grass wasn't cut that week it rendered the whole field unusable and we were forced to play in the parking lot thank you this season all eight of our seniors received awards for their skills despite this challenge my girls had the determination the passion the skills to play through all these uncontrollable factors but there is no reason we should be forced to I'm a proud advocate for all things Baldwin I fully believe that
we are Innovative and inclusive however you cannot pick and choose which sports get the resources to succeed and allow others to be overlooked we are coming to you with the support of our parents our coaches and our alumni and asking that you take you practice what this school district preaches and take the necessary steps to include us in the Innovation by putting field hockey lines on the new turf field thereby allowing us to thrive in a growing Sport and expand our program for talented young women in Baldwin in future years to come thank you thank [Applause] you thank you J Jasmine um you going through your notes or are you calling on people no are you not I just called Jasmine I know you calling a second speak no that's why I'm responding to Jasmine
I'm just saying to Dennis yeah he needs to wait for yeah just Mary J yeah I was just going to respond to uh sorry to Jasmine I'm sorry yeah I just yeah I have several uh questions on the same topic so I you know what but I would address them uh now in 20 I'm just going to start at the beginning and kind of set the table for this conversation um in 2020 the district put up a bond and in that Bond we had the upgrades and new fields for All Sports and that Bond Was Defeated so when that Bond was defeated the board the administration kind of went back to the drawing board and said what could we do maybe out of our Capital reserves what can we do a little bit at a
time so we started with the tennis courts we redid them this year the big project was the turf field there's a laundry list of things Capital Improvements that need to be done in the district which is why the bond was put up in the first place and believe me we know that there are things that need to be done that there are facilities that need to be upgraded or changed or pulled out or whatever we know that that's why the bond was put up so now that we're dealing with working with within our budget things are going to go a little bit at a time time there was certainly never an intention on the part of anyone to disrespect the field hockey team in fact the field the football field was lined to accommodate the
teams that already played on it and so for me personally never even occurred to me to ask we don't just generally speaking the board certainly doesn't get involved at that level of decision making so do I get it that you feel that this is not fair yes I do but I have to say that when we put the bond up that's why we did it because we needed everything and we needed more than athletic fields we if you've been if you were here at meetings a year ago you heard p parents from the Middle School complaining about the football field there and you have heard about people complaining about everything from bathrooms to roofs to whatever so we have a long list of things that are going to have to be accommodated in our budget
a little at a time or and this is the conversation we need to have now when I say we the board and the community is whether we should put the bond up again and we should look at doing all the facilities that we need done and that's you're not telling us anything we don't know and we are in complete agreement that all of these things need to be done it's simply a question of priorities and those are things that would have to be decided among all of us if you recall when we when we were going to do the bond we had hearing after hearing after hearing with the community to figure out what people wanted what were the things that were the most important to this community and we would have to do that
again so going forward we this certainly is going to be part of our conversation and you know I certainly I can't give you particulars at this moment but I can tell you you that definitely it'll be part of the conversation and now that there has been this outpouring I think it's a great incentive for us to have another conversation with the community about the bond and about whether there's a will now to move forward and really take on all of the kinds of things that need to be done so I you know I'm I'm sorry there's not a simple answer to this and there are things that we can look at the other thing I just want to mention in passing that when the field the turf field was ordered for the football field there
are already there were already many teams that played on it which is another reason I think nobody thought of adding a team because at this point they're scheduling issues the field hockey team should have had its own turf field that was what was part of the bond and I don't know that they would ever be able to fit in the schedule practices for instance on the turf field because there's already women's lacrosse men's lacrosse women's soccer SP men spot but I'm just and I'm I'm not saying that it couldn't ever be done I'm just saying it's not as simple as oh we'll just add another team to the schedule we could try it but I'm just saying it's not a simple decision and that's other districts do it again I I can't I can't speak
to other districts I can't you know that's not the kind of thing I can I have any expertise in but I I'm I hear your frustration I hear what you want and I can only promise that there will be further conversation going forward you know now that we we are aware yes and I have several I have the same question over and over so I'm I unless it's you know some different aspect of it iot on the field hockey situation oh I yes and we can go on to that I just meant that I'm not going to so call everybody up for was it I thought your okay okay minutes yeah I know I know go ahead they fill out a card or no yeah yeah I guess so because I don't have well I
was handed one two three four questions about field hockey okay then that would be James would be next and that's that's you no that's not James I'm sorry I apologize what okay go ahead yeah sure so I know that Mrs o'hagin stated this but I think it's very important to just reiterate this nothing was done intentionally to slight anybody or any team we are the biggest supporters of all of our students of all of our athletes of all of our teams when the work was done done the lines were drawn based on the teams that always played on that field it was just naturally done that way nothing was done to intentionally slight anyone as Mrs o'hagen also said going forward please as Mrs o'hagen said going forward there are different possibilities that can be
looked at to solve this issue but it is important for everyone to know nothing intentional was done we support and appreciate all of you thank you please okay then I have one here from James I'm sorry I can't G I'm so I apologize I don't know the name g oav j that that's not how we do it James did he write what is his name what is his name he say he we're trying to look for his name but we can look and it's not here he he onl online oh okay I'm sorry okay all right now I have to I'll I'll look at the ones online give my name pleas I'm sorry I'm looking at two different lists here he did that's number he's right here Den okay okay could you tell us what
the rules are so we know we're operating I apologize just tell us what the rules are who speaks when and things like that usually we have questions submitted in advance and then we we get a copy of them and yes then we call on and then we call on call on you Tobe on you to speak from point of clarification some of you have not been at this meeting in a while in the past yes we've let everyone speak I'm not saying we are we aren't that's up to the board president but to but the new process or the process that we've been doing for the past few years there's a box in the back where you write your question on a sheet and this once those questions are pulled up they go to the
board president and she reads them out loud and then you go up and you say your question it comes out that is the process but for some of you that haven't been at the meetings in the past yes we've done what you're doing you line up it's different now there's a box in a back and that's where questions are put yes they are yes they are there was just a there was a a moment of mix up so give us Grace we figured it out and now we're going to go through the process which we have which is the questions in the back plus the questions online okay so this is Mr feny this is M okay good evening my name is Dennis feny my wife loette and I are 25e residents of Baldwin and
the proud parents of 10 children all of them have been or currently our students of the bald School District the lessons they've learned here in the classrooms and on the athletic fields have prepared them well four of them have already graduated and are leading productive adult lives and the other six are following the same path we are confident that the baldon school district will also prepare them well for whatever lies ahead thank you to the board of education for making sure all of our students are prepared well this brings me to the topic I would like to discuss this evening Athletics specifically field hockey there have been many proud moments for for us as parents of waldwin athletes whether it be watching your son's hand raised in Victory at the county wrestling tournament or your
daughter in goal securing a victory at a field hockey Stout against division rival or still yet seeing the girls of Baldwin field hockey walking off the field as ntional County champions in 2016 17 and many members of that team are here tonight however seeing how these balen girls have come together getting signatures making preparations to speak here tonight at this Board of Ed meeting should make all of us as parents and residents very proud we've recently learned that the field hockey program will not be participating in competition on the tur field so for a few moments I'd like to discuss field hockey and what it means to this community and our girls besides our basketball program field hockey in balding has had the most success of any other sport winning multiple County titles and most
recently in the in the 201617 school year our field hockey team is also a perennial playoff Contender off in Vine for the County Title again our next Point our main road to the high school campus is named after eel T koberg who in spite of many other accomplishments is a 1968 inductee of the National Field Hockey Hall of Fame our former varsity coach and teacher Miss Bob Reese he a 2001 inductee of the naso county Field Hockey Hall of Fame and many of girls have gone on to playing college representing baldon at the national level the reason I mention all this is to bring it to focus how much deep rooted history field hockey has your involving generations of girls have played in the same family grandmothers Mothers Daughters sisters cousins friends all teammates for
Life shared by one common bond field hockey uh for those of us that were fortunate enough to listen to cam Davis's essay about about what field hockey means to her at the county Awards dinner we would be having this discussion here tonight field hockey would not have been slided her was very inspiring and yet another proud moment for all of us in a bing Community many of us parents have had multiple daughters in the program and we know firsthand how dedicated these girls are the support for the program is tremendous often times many former players and parents stop by games to cheer our girls on it is so great to see that as was mentioned earlier we've learned that the new turf field will not have lines on it for field hockey competition currently one
the only varsity team in nassur that still plays on grass and it's horrible at that I'm this puts our girls at a disadvantage because it is a much different game on the thir field however our girls led by coaches Mike Hoover Katherine th coach mcke and the entire coaching staff from the Middle School on find a way to be successful each year it is my I believe as well as many others that if the field hockey team gets shunned out of using the new tur field it will begin the demise of this long successful program here in Baldwin it will occur due to a lack of interest and to have a feeling that you're afterthought not important or second ratee if this was to occur it would be very detrimental to this community as one
less opportunity is available for our girls and Bon to compete on the athletic field and as I conclude my remarks I would like to recommend that the school district include the lines of the T for field hockey every other high school does it it's very easy to do I'll do it if you need it done as is evidence I this show up support and attendance this evening and the hundreds of signatures on the petition it will be in the best interest of the past present and future girls of our field hockey program and the entire Bal Community thank you for the opportunity to speak this evening thank thank you very much much um I there's nothing there that any of us would disagree with um I have to admit I met of felberg and I
knew Barbara ree very well and I I'm certainly in great admiration of the field hockey team um the next person to speak Mr Goa I apologize if I'm mispronouncing it and please let's try to stick with the three minutes I don't want to be rude I don't want to interrupt someone but please try to keep it in the time FR not a problem okay good evening good evening good evening good evening good evening B how y'all doing so I know some of these girls um my name is James gavaya my daughter Maya Gava played field hockey and is now a sophomore at uh University of Delaware uh so I'm going to call her name out y'all don't tell me I'm tell her I'm using her name but the reality of it is I I'm also
a member of an organization called alpify Alpha Fraternity Incorporated we have a statement we say no backward steps with all due respect I understand that there may be thoughts if we had had the bond if we had had the bond we could say that for a lot of things we don't so what's the fix now what's the plan now I don't think it might be as difficult as we're making it because while the schedule May need adjusting and lines on Turf they do take some effort to pull up number of schools pull up Turf lines put them back down it's not that hard of a [Applause] deal furthermore I would say moving forward I think we need to start showing these students how just how much they really do mean to us and students I'm
going to to challenge you when we say when it says PTSA be there make sure your voice is heard CU quite frankly the board should not make one single decision if they do not know what your desires are what your parents desires are coaches need to be at all these discussions and I realize the board is hard work that's why I ain't run for it yet but we need to listen to our kids there are easier ways to deal with this field that I think we're approaching and I'd be more than happy to sit with you and bring some of the people I know in the Sports World who might be able to assist in this thank you thank [Applause] you okay um Isabelle aen is she here Isabella mckam oh okay okay are you
Isabella I'm speaking on behalf of her like on her behalf okay so I was a fouryear field hockey athlete at Baldwin high school and throughout those four years oh and and everyone needs to tell us their name and their address yeah like Olivia spec Olivia spec Kenneth okay Kenneth Avenue okay okay go ahead I was a fouryear Athlete on the field hockey team and throughout those four years we dealt with severe conditions that no one should have to deal with my freshman year I suffered an injury due to our Fields I was we were forced to play on the tennis court so that we could get a feel of what the turf conditions were like in order to prepare for playoffs as a result of playing on those tennis courts I fractured my growth plate
and missed out on basically my entire freshman season I missed out on crucial years of my development which put me behind and caused me to have to work harder to get to where I am today which is being a Collegiate athlete when I was also a freshman we had a run after it's rained severely on the field due to that there was holes in the field that caus players to keep slipping and sliding One of Those runs one of my teammates Abby Wong fell into one of those holes and sprained her ankle due to falling into that hole not having Turf and not providing those lines on that main field puts all our athletes at risk my dad who was back there can attest that that medical bill of that MRI and all those x-rays
was not very fun and was not fun for for me to go through as an athlete who wanted to play I was a freshman who had a very big desire to play and being put at just having to sit on the side with big boot on my leg having to watch all my teammates wanting to be on the field with them but having to sit onside and cheer them on I loved watching them play but again as a freshman those were crucial years in my development furthermore teams don't like playing us because of the field that we're on I go to a college on Long Island where a lot of my teammates are team girls that I play in with in the past one of the girls from new hi High Park said how much
they disliked coming to our field because they did not like playing on the grass it should not be a drag for teams to come to us and play us it should be fun for every team and should be fun for them to come to us and play for us and not have to worry about the facility that they are on we should have those lines on that turf field so that no team feels again that it's oh we're going to Baldwin we have to play on grass it should not be that way what was stated before for was that we played in the parking lots we would be damaging our sticks which mind you are very expensive um we would be playing in our cleat still which caused us to you know slip off every
once in a while and playing near teachers cars which mind you they probably were not very fond of that we were playing by their cars with very with thick heavy balls that on that field had dibbits the ball would fly up hit girls in the face there are probably dozens of girls of past teams that we played that have said yeah the ball flew up and hit me in the face this is why we should have lines on those field because it is a risk to our athletes thank thank you thank you very much Mr [Applause] Palmer good evening lawen and Palmer 145 Delaware Avenue uh I'm I'm sort of for new with this but I have three requests the first is put field hockey lines on the turf field the second is put field
hockey lines on the C and the third [Applause] is I I've got two daughters going through and going through the system the school system bald uh one is here today and I won't mention her name just for to keep it secret but she was drafted to play field hockey this season only and I tried to make every game I may have missed one or two but I also can comment on what some of the players were saying when you go to the other people's or the team's Fields Guard C not M Carl Place Port Washington and you see their turf field and you see how their players play on their perf you see the [Applause] difference our girls are as good or better than any of those players out there amen but when I see
them play an our grass field in practice and you see them try to pass the ball to the ground the ball doesn't do what it's supposed to do jumps up so when they go to the turf field and try to make those same playes they have no practice doing doing that so the passes that should be normal easy pass for them to pass and score they can't do because they haven't had the practice on the turf field that everyone else is playing on and that puts us at a distinct disadvantage we end up losing games that we should not lose I say again put field hockey lines on the turf field so our girls can play and practice on that so when they go to play Fort Washington Garden City they ask speak they're playing
on an even Level Playing Field now my girls grew up playing soccer and we played down Baldwin field and if you've been down there that field is a mess and the same thing we practice on the old field and when we go to a better field dis advantage that should not be the case that should not be the case now it's been said several times that it was essentially an oversight but that tells me that the football coaches were there in the meeting the soccer coaches were there in the meeting reach out to them and nobody we sh for our coaches and that should not be that should not be the proposal that we should well first of all let me thank Dr C specifically for the effort I know she put into trying to
get this Bond passed to get everything done properly and thank and the board that we're actually getting something done but the idea that we should wait to rebond and try to get this issue about to get a separate Feld for the girls to wait another how many 15 20 years I make that com because I was talking to someone who's actually I think a coach in assistant who said the talk about the tur has been going on for so long basically I'll see it when I see it still skeptical even though we have the fields being dug up so I I I ask you don't go the root of let re Bondo thing all over that's sort of like let's table it let's not table it let's put field hocky lines on this turf field
for all the girls who are here going to be playing next year so when we come back next year to share them on at least one game at least because the schedule can be done let's get them on the turf thank you [Applause] Mr Sissa Bena yeah oh it does I'm sorry it doesn't say that it says okay go ahead hi Lisa hello everyone again Elisa ker New York Avenue I do have a question before all this starts as of I guess yesterday when is the field actually supposed to be done I'm sorry when is the field as of yesterday supposed to be done Dr Robinson early spring to be played on okay Fields lines are children we are the horses ass of the district I ask again why was the field even dug up
without proper reports and tests so at least the children could have gotten a full season out of it homecoming was fantastic actually one of the best and most remembered days of the seniors even though you guys had to shum the ad to harass the captains to harass the players to make sure that there were even enough football players for that game to be played so we could be all the way out in Port Jeff this is just another project is taking 10 times as long does anyone think about the long-term term picture of these projects I know you all have the stats of APS and academics and awards however it does come down to the children and them doing the work above and beyond not you so the children's are the ones that actually should
be applauded because most of your top students are actually here right in front of you and I bet most of you didn't even know that or even know who they are just just a name and a stat I stress that these children are under just the stresses that these children are under just so you can get your numbers and grants gets released during their gets release during their extracurricular activities along with their schoolmate support of them cheering on during their games so what Arrangements have you made that they can actually play games during the Spring you have had plenty of time to plan if the spr fields are not done early spring our children practice at other districts Freeport Rockville Center so on so forth because they are student athletes and such winter lacks can't
even happen because of Middle School sports at we are at the high school come on seriously and while I am on this rant another month who created this latest Brewin bear that is supposed to be on all the Athletic Apparel and why it looks like a drunk Photoshop bear who's made this decision it was long time of tradition that the captains were able to design their team's Pride path and you have also taken that away the coaches is the previous ad that had this up this is not a religious school and we do not have uniforms as far as I can remember so please advise so remember over a dozen Fields were done from start to finish on the island over this past summer so what about us or again are we just the asses
[Applause] for I don't know that there's much more response that I can provide besides the fact that we absolutely hear you and understand that our facilities desperately need upgrading many of them do well as you know a years ago I didn't even want Turf injuries happen on Turf things happen on Turf a grass properly landscaped field is so much better than any of these entities however this is where we're at are plans being made for our spring Sports to be played somewhere on a home base somewhere if it's not on that field sadly we cannot do everything at the same time because we are constrained by our budget so we are doing things on a schedule but I'm talking about making phone calls as Dr Robinson said that the the turfield that is currently being
installed is not going to be usable until the spring and we don't have a specific date yet these are things over which the district does not have total control we are have we have outdoor outdoor we have outside vendors who are doing the installations we don't get the kind of specific dates that we would like to have too so what phone calls are being made made for other scheduling yes it was great to see some of you at the at the homecoming game you guys were stuck in traffic what half time you guys got I mean trust me it was great but come on half of these girls and boys in here play fall Sports and they've already missed out on that I understand and I all I can say is that our the athletic
department is trying to draw up some alternative plans an interim person that makes way too much money every day oh well plain simple makes I hear you I hear you I can't there's not really much I can say to respond so I hear you Mrs Garner but I there's nothing more I can say who designed this Brewing bear and why is it this bear that has to be used well that's I think that's for another day I'm sorry I we're going to have to move on three now and then this is what so when will we get information about it I don't know I don't know we'll try to get back to you privately but I can't so is this actually or could they use anything I'm sorry I cannot hear are they able to
design their own apparel like they I do not know the answer to those questions I would have to find that out and get back to you privately and are the is the football team and the cheer and the ban and everybody getting the senior day getting a what there senior day I I don't know that anything that I don't know of anything that has been cancelled we'll look into it that's all I can tell you we're not I'm I don't have that information um the next I have Megan anglehart what I thought you name I did but I think people were busy clapping so you might see okay I'm sorry your name Megan anglehart oh I'm sorry yes good evening my name is Megan angelart and I'm one of the seniors on the bald High
School varsity field hockey team field hockey has always been an important part of my life and I've been on the team for four years and have been playing since I was 7 years old my sisters played my cousin played my aunt played my friends played and even some of my teachers have played field hockey is a woman's sport that demands speed skill and both mental and physical ability my fellow seniors and I have had the opportunity to play this wonderful sport over the course of our high school careers however we have not had it easy field hockey is a fast game and it is even faster on Turf requiring stick skills that are adapted to Quick movement field field hockey is designed and expected to be played on Turf playoffs and higher level field hockey
are played on Turf so while we have the advantage at our home grass field at every away or postseason game we are at a disadvantage when the team found out Balden was installing a turf field we were Overjoyed as this is something the program has needed since before I picked up a stick so imagine our shock when we discovered we were not being included in the development while almost every other outdoor sport was when contacted about why the field would not included lines for the field hockey team District administration gave three main reasons including scheduling conflicts the design of other District's field and their effect on officiating and the change in Dynamics from playing on Turf i' would like to take my time to explain why each of these reasons are not enough to defend
the idea that the field hockey line should not be placed on the field first in terms of scheduling conflict can you speak in the mic closer to the mic thank you okay first in terms of scheduling conflict the field will already have to be rotated between three other teams ideal field hockey is played on Turf so we should be included in that rotation while managing four team's use of one field may be somewhat inconvenient other districts have and already proven it is possible baldwi is known for acade athletic excellence and by including field hockey in that rotation of field teams on the turf we can further Excel second of the nine different teams that we played this season eight of them have turf fields and the one team that did not have a turf field
was having its Turf replaced in Seasons prior to this year the only grass field we have played on is our own furthermore in the past 8 years Garden City has been to the state championship six times and Carl place has been three times those team play on football fields with field hockey and Lacrosse lines with no confusion in the lines by officials they're even able to officiate the Port Washington field which has softball foul lines intersecting on a diagonal across the field every other team we face has Turf many of which use the lines we already plan to have lines which the officials have been proven to be capable of understanding third field hockey is designed to be played on Turf it is a faster surface that allows players to develop better six fi and
move the ball with more accuracy our grass field is poorly maintained with clumps of grass that are not removed after Mowing and uneven ground and unfill holes that make it difficult to control the ball Additionally the poor drainage has led to us having to avoid parts of the field during practice after a hard rain players should be focused on their game not the issue of losing possession or getting injured because of poor field quality our team makes playoffs every year and every year we at a disadvantage because postseason and highle field hockey are all played on t Turf in the past we had to take a bus to Oceanside Park to use their turf field or practice on the high school track and on some occasions we even had to practice in the parking lot
imagine being a teacher and walking out to see your students playing in an active school parking lot in order to represent your school district this year the tennis team's Turf courts allowed us to better prepare for Turf games but that is not enough baldon deserves better historically we've made it as far as States and we deserve the proper facilities to make it there again as o as the over five 00 people who signed our PE petition also believe finally title n nine states that no person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participating in be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receding federal financial assistant we are a girls team composed of scholar athletes often with one or more members
of the top 10 represented we Excel both on and off the field and deserve the opportunity to achieve the most we can by having a turf field without having access to a proper turf field we are being set up for failure as every other team we play has the ability to practice on a game-changing Surface the field hockey team has been fighting for a turf field for years and now when one is finally being installed we won't be able to utilize it and reach our full potential while your decision on this matter will have no impact on past players or the current seniors underclassman and future players should have every opportunity to be successful the baldwi field hockey program deserves better than to be excluded from this Monumental development thank you thank [Applause] you thank
you very much Megan uh now I have salissa Beno or benois Ben is she here okay hello everybody hi my name is Felisa Beno I am a senior at the high school I'm also one of the captains I don't have nothing to prepared to you guys but I'm going to just speak about what I feel like I've been hearing um as I've been here so I'm not going to come up here and tell you guys what feel means to me everybody in this room or at least that's been a part of the saki program can tell you how important it is to them it's just as important to me if not more but I'm going to come and talk to you about why it was even like I get that baldwi stands for being allinclusive
and I I love being at Bal and I love it I can't I grew up here since I was in sixth grade but how do you consider yourself allinclusive and Innovative when you're not considering all factors of a of the school you we field hockey has been a tradition in Baldwin for years as we've heard we're considering football soccer girls across boys across everything but the one sport that was being excluded was field hockey and you're telling me nobody looked around and said oh we're missing a sport we're we're we're going to put everybody we put tennis on Turf there's there's there's Turf on the tennis field but there's not Turf on a field hockey field that's been played nationally for decades that's that's the only concern that I was like as I'm sitting here
I'm hearing everybody we are talking about Innovation being exclus being inclusive everything but why wasn't field hockey considered in The Innovation like I generally have a question that's not rhetorical like I I would like an answer if I was providing and resp in the most respectful way I'm being so respectful promise okay no no this isn't microphone I'm sorry you're asking why it wasn't considered is that was your question yes okay I I thought I I tried to address that earlier just by saying the the field was lined to accommodate the teams that were already playing on it there was not an intent to somehow disrespect the field hockey program the lines were put on to accommodate the teams and there are several of them that already used like the lacrosse both girls and boys
lacrosse teams both girls and boys soccer the football team so this didn't certainly didn't rise to our level nor would it ever have uh so this is something that that we're all listening to very carefully okay but was there ever an intent to put Turf on the Fieldy fields at all as I said earlier when we put that Bond up we acknowledged that all of the fields needed substantial upgrading and our original uh uh rendering of the Fields included a turf field for the field hockey team but unfortunately the bond Was Defeated so then we have had to kind of Peace meal things as we went along and that's not so easy to do some people you just feel luy L well so when when the bond Was Defeated and we we decided that okay
they won't get their own fi their own lines on the main field wasn't an accommodation that that wasn't the next best option or just no field in general with the next best option well as I as I tried to explain there are a huge number of competing interests and competing demands for things to be done so no that was not part of the conversation because we have a number of people who wanted and we did do the tennis courts and then the next project was the football field then presumably we would move on to other things that we might be able to accommodate within our budget but they're always going to be over time and they're going to be they're going to take time and somebody's going to have the new facility and somebody's not
going to have the new facility for another year or two seems like everybody has would have the new facility but field hocky stalker is going to have a court everybody's going to have one but f hocky i completely understand what you're saying I know there it's obviously bigger than what I can imagine cuz I'm not in that position obviously still young I know but I feel like it I'm just saying like consider it we've all came out as a part of your community your like your job is bigger than what we think but it also is to listen to your community and we've come out and shown that this is an issue that's arising and we still see it as an issue and we all we're just asking you to listen and consider it and
obviously make it a higher issue on the demand for everybody else's field since soccer has a higher demand football has a higher demand than field hockey when in reality we're all a part of the balding Community correct and everything so that's all I'm asking for you and thank you thank [Applause] you okay this the last one I yeah I should be right we have one more question um it is from and I'm sorry about the pronunciation adiola t Williams not here I okay well what do you want to do did you guys fill out you okay that's the way it works rich rich uh we announced a few times how the process works you go back to the box and F your question so if you still have a question I'm the yeah is it
the same is it on the same topic okay okay okay okay let's not do that then I there's very little else I can offer you except what I have that I'm hearing I'm hearing we're all hearing what you have to say speak to the Ladi showed up [Applause] here okay you want me to bring the paper because okay um okay please please keep it brief not okay okay all right and please give us your name and address hi my name is Richard spec 1625 Kenneth Avenue me resident of Baldwin since 2001 proud resident of balds in 2001 four children in the district two daughters on the field hockey team coach Hoover has been a big part of my family for the last 10 years um I just want to tell the girls that all came
out here tonight maybe you should be studying I don't know but I'm proud of people for being here what you're witnessing is America in action okay yes we know how we got bureaucracy people didn't pay attention we didn't know you're going to hear that for the rest of youres there was a time when we thought we couldn't go to John F Kennedy asked R Von bra what do we need to get to the move all he said the desire to get to the move you girls want to people talking to you hold on to this desire tonight don't let the Bucy at the beginning of this forum tonight we were told how there short teachers and coaches okay we need men like my couver coach deal to want to coach I don't believe he was
properly asked I should do L on here I wasn't there but I know that you as students deserve to get whatever you're willing to work for work for this you will get it thank you [Applause] okay okay keep it okay okay please give us your name I'm so tired of what is your name please ma' sorry my name is uh Agnes Moran and I'm been a resident of baldman all my life and I'm very disgusted about what's been going on all these kids are going into the high school and they're robbing these brick and water store stores blind they go in with their backpacks on their lunch hours and they clean out the shelves and no accountability is done for it and I don't feel it's right as a a hardworking person that's a taxpayer
with all these kids Jo they have to be held accountable some way thank you thank you I mean maybe do some kind of community service or something so that they know they can't get keep getting away with this CU all these stores are going to go out of business Dollar Tree is robbed every damn week so is CVS so is Walgreens right a is probably chapter 11 because they're getting robed blind and it's not it's adults it's kids too and it's all over but it has to stop now thank you thank you thank you and we also have one more all this about D okay okay okay thank you we have we have we have heard you okay thank you excellent thank you if they can't do Ma [Music] okay that's why we have a
