routine matters board board minutes of December 12th 2023 treasurers report of October 2023 treasurers report November 2023 and CSC recommendations may I have a motion so moved second second any discussion all those in favor I all those opposed motion carry at this time we have staff recognition yeah so we we have a couple of presentations tonight um we are looking forward to being able to recognize some of our outstanding employees u in the district to really represent what um the best of canistota it's important to be able to do that we're excited to be able to continue what we started last month with that um and so I'm going to turn it over uh we have two presenters we have Cindy Clark and uh Derek snog so you want to start us off of course

C in good evening everyone so I'd just like to take a moment to recognize a couple of my staff members who have shown their dedication not only to the school district but to our students every day uh these two people um they are on a special needs run and they deal with 20 special needs students every single one of them has different types of behaviors and disabilities um and these two people that I have um have been outstanding uh in dealing with all the multiple different uh situations that they need to deal with um and most recently um they had a little bit of an issue uh with some students and they handled it extremely well there's not a day that comes in that these two don't smile and are proud to be where they

are and do what they do um even when they've had a bad day and I come in and see three writeups um they smile um and they just deal with it every day um I couldn't be more proud of both of them and I tell them that all the time that these two I have a bus Aid her name is Jamie rashford and I have the bus driver Vicky Watson Jamie's been with me for about um three years now and Vicki's been a driver for about seven years now with me um and the two of them just they're they're wonderful together you couldn't ask for a better Dynamic team so I would just like to recognize them for their empathy uh their compassion every day um day in and day out and and just being

a part of my team and um Emily recently was on the bus also uh with a situation and she witnessed that connection um it's really nice to know that some of our media students um are safe every day with two um wonderful people that every day morning or afternoon it's it's a fresh fresh start and with a population that rides that bus that can be a little little difficult but it's really nice to know that I feel completely comfortable having anybody ride on that bus knowing that those two will be the driver in the [Applause] AG I'm by myself [Music] hand thank you want these open or all right all right Mr Mr stag floor is yours so I had to put something in in writing cuz I'm not nearly as articulate um as C

so um but I just didn't want to forget any anything um either so just good evening everyone um so I've been very fortunate over the past 30 plus years to have worked alongside some of the best teachers in the area however only a certain number have left an impressional mark on me due to their significant impact on kids and now I can add Robert Street Elementary School to that list of teachers so the barometer that I've used over the course of my career for a highly effective and outstanding teacher is actually pretty simple would I want my kids to have this person as their teacher a pretty simple age and to answer that question in regard to this recipient is a resounding yes I would love my kids to have a role model like Jill

mahany someone that would make my daughter feel safe welcoming respected kind Fair patient and a is able to make learning enjoyable of course we know that it takes more than these attributes for example classroom management content knowledge work ethic etc etc etc however aside from the necessary instructional expectations is the teachers's deep love and Devotion to their kids that's pretty much it and that's what Jill mahy brings to the table each and every day no matter how challenging a student may be it doesn't matter she's going to treat and care about each and every student as if they were her own Jill the students parents staff and myself cannot thank you enough for everything you do and everything you stand for you will forever be etched in my memory as being one of the best

and for that you are being rightfully honored at tonight's Board of Education meeting thank you [Applause] yep very very welcome the hug again are we are we staging a [Laughter] hug where are we going we you do you just want this is for oh thank you over here is good that work yeah over here yeah it's Goods I [Music] yes photo first then can shake and go back we'll do it backwards so we'll take the group photo first and oh really oh my goodness oh yeah Facebook thank you thank you very [Applause] much um I just wanted to say thank you because this was my library I come from canot I'm very proud of it when I was going to school to be a teacher it was my dream to come back here and I

always say you're only as good as the people you work with and I work with the absolute best people in the world and um it's all of us together that do this for these kids so thank you to my friends and all of us yeah thank you we're [Applause] good update on the transportation program doing the principal oh I'm sorry I skipped over the principal oh I just heard I so can we start backwards this time we can't do you want to start Mr Schultz Mr first mixing it up thank you am I do first first you very good good even everybody how you doing nice to see you all um just a couple updates first of all go back to December the 19th uh we had a very nice high honor lunch of high

honor rooll luncheon for our students a little over 100 students over three lunches came here and it was a nice recognition we'll continue to look at for opportunities and our high honor our honor and our um jump shot Award winners to find Opportunities to rec recogniz the students so it's very positive and um very good so very nice um recognition of our students I did want to mention um the there was an email out went out to our faculty and staff from the music department Mr Buon uh about Beauty and the Beast and they were calling for anybody like to be in it so if you'd like to be in the beauty the Beast p uh musical just let me know we'll get you in there so it' be very nice to have you but

they are looking for people to be there but uh to be a part of the show literally so it's very nice but I thought I'd share that with you so let me know um after school program we'll be starting up a little over a month this year we're going to have this this time we'll have 3 through eight last time was four through 8 so we'll have 3 through 8 we'll start it they'll be getting out very soon signups um looking for the opportunity to really go into the third grade as well um to provide that after school program preparing for the math and Ela exams speaking of that we had a simulation today with Fifth and eighth grade A CBT computer-based simulation with our students to really practice I it so they begin to

get used to it and practice and it went well so um a good start and a good um um reflection of trying to prepare our students for a new way they usually no more writing at least that grade they'll be on the computer so working on preparing them for that um in December over actually over the uh winter break we had we made an effort to have students to come in during the break for a day or for a couple hours uh we picked maybe the wrong time at 8: a.m. we picked 8: a.m. for them to come in and we thought maybe people want to drop them off and come and then go and play some basketball or you know board games in the library and so forth so we're going to try it

again in February over the February break on the 22nd Funday uh for the students we'll do from 11:00 to 1 and have some food so maybe that'll get some more people we're hoping but uh we do want to get this idea where even over the break if we can have students come in they may want to spend some time and more fun things and now that we're going to be getting the Esports which will be starting next week uh that could be another section as as well speaking of that Esports will start up uh next week um grateful to Mrs Ray who will be our advisor we have a parent um adviser as well support Mr mastriano and we have a couple more people that'll be joining supporting us so we're very happy we have

I think more than 20 or least 19 signed up already so we look forward to having more students in the Esports program prizes uh we had a ton of prizes uh from connected communi so that was really appreciated we had drinks so there was a lot of nice things for for the kids um so that was again last week it's actually going to become our annual event uh this past Thursday last week and Monday we had our nwaa uh benchmarking that went very well uh pretty seamless our teachers really are becoming Adept at uh you know at the ongoing assessment of these uh these benchmarks so again pretty seamless uh the as Mr Schultz was saying we had the CBT um simulation today really a shout out to not only our F uh fifth grade

teachers but really miss Henner who kind of really took you know what she usually does take the bull by the horn and just um the organizational the uh uh piece of the CBT so there's a lot to it the first time around so I thought it was a big success uh we have an assembly uh coming up this Thursday uh Mr Jennings is uh we're working with him on the uh diversity equity and inclusion presentation we're going to have a couple of speakers from The Boxing Hall of Fame and we're the the theme behind it is we're trying to get um our social studies curriculum connected with the uh with the presentation so um Mr Jennings actually had our social studies teachers um make a list of things that they've been covering in association with

that topic so now when the present presenters come they'll be able to have a Common Thread that they can talk to the kids about so um that's pretty much it busy as always but uh good things thank you so currently at Southside um we are just about finished with our second marking period so the past week and a half has been a little hectic with some bench marking for nwaa along with um some oral leading fluency so we're we're going to look at that data and make some changes as needed um so that's always an exciting time um along with that we had a wonderful donation from the local knits at the library they donated scarves and mittens that were beautiful to both um Southside and Peterboro which helped with a lot of our friends

that come without a scar for or mittens um so we we would like to extend a really grateful thanks to them because that was took a lot of time and energy um and other than that we're just kind of gearing up and getting ready for you know February and March and we're really excited that after school is going to incorporate third grade as well um and we've had a good amount of interest from both staff and students so should be good thank you thank you some updates for you from Peterboro Street next um our prees are working on community helpers so learning about all of the important jobs in our community so they have some great centers set up in their classrooms learning about what happens at the post office and what happens at the

veterinarian's office too so very cute to see their interaction stations and the conversations they're coming up with they've read lots of um seen some videos and read books um on different occupations we have some exciting news in kindergarten our uh one of our teachers Amy Peron wrote a grant um and was issued uh the grant through the Madison County retired Teachers Association so we have five brand new incubators for the spring um with some fancy features on on them we've had some issues over the years with our um patching of our our chicks and Ducks and the like but um these are Auto turning and they are temperature and humidity controlled and they're even they you can candle the eggs right in the incubator so there's no more coming in on weekends um to turn

to turn the eggs and check on the eggs and trying to find an old film strip projector to try to um candle you know the eggs to watch um to watch the development there so we're very excited and grateful for Mrs perone for making that happen uh lots of fun stuff happening um with our science kits of course transparent translucent and opaque are all big vocabulary words for first graders right now and uh our January theme for the month uh is sharing and one of our little coin phrases is sharing is caring so we um have a connection at Onida Healthcare and we are taking turns by grade levels making snowflakes or we'll be doing Valentine's coming up so different grade levels and classes are taking turns um you know brightening up the the residents

rooms and that kind of thing so um we'll continue with that into the spring also we've got a big PTA event coming up uh an evening event in conjunction with connected Community Schools sweet treat bingo so that hasn't been uh we did do one last year over April Break um but this year we're going to do it in February so and really um capitalizing on our partnership with Miss Jessica who is shared between Peterboro Street and Southside um to make some curriculum connections so she's going to be um bringing in some some people for dental health month in February and even some uh a partnership hopefully with wktv and their weather people also so to dub tail into what's happening in science thank you sure thank you thank you thank you thank you Transportation so

I wanted to Circle back around and just bring the board up to speed where we are back in September we had talked about I brought to you um the movement from our current routing platform to boss right the main platform of GPS based and the opportunities that it would give us uh kind of scaffolding of what's able so just wanted to bring you up to speed where we are Cindy will come back to the board in February and um further this conversation about where we are at this point um is we're in Pilot mode so the leg work the behind the scenes the moving of the routes have happened so Cindy and Maria were uh very busy taking that data working with the um the platform company uh bus R movie our routing uh uh

routes moving all of our routes into the system and getting the back end up and running all of our transportation staff many of them here were trained today um on the use of the iPad because it is an iPad that goes into the bus system um and uh so we started rolling that out it's been rolled out for the GPS portion of R this afternoon um you going to give week or two Cindy will will be taking comments concerns questions um issues good bad from her staff as Road and deploy and then we'll go back to the company there are some settings that get changed along the way so as as we start to hear concerns but um in February after it's been out for a couple weeks and some feedback has come uh syy

will come update the board of what it has looked like and and what have been the benefits when we are able to see our our transportation um products Out There Our buses out there in real time in where they are um again as you talked about this is a multi-level platform one being the routing piece physically routing um not again you correct me if I'm wrong but I mean as we're in the school year unless we get a new student um routing itself is a big piece of what happens right now but certainly um if there are any changes to program if there are any changes to time as we go into a new school year lot of ring happens um if we get a call and a bridge is out if we get a

call and there's an accident uh you know there are different things now that Cindy can do she now has two screens um and and literally see we can see in a snapshot where all of our buses are um so so a lot of functionality um as we talked about again maybe we're not here but the this platform also has the ability for a parent piece we did speak with the two schools um locally that deployed this uh last year they did the GPS deployment and the same thing you know how do you deploy the part that you um you know that you have that parent piece and what we found when we back out to them again a couple times this year is instead of going through this very long AED pilot process they deployed

and were just really really pleasantly surprised with um just some of the the pieces like parents again you don't see stops you don't see addresses like when we get there we'll talk about that but just being able to see has the bus come to where you know how how far is the bus there's different pie that you can see it's my kid on right um so there's an attendance piece real time we can see did that child get on the bus what bus is that child on um we're not there right we're at the routing stage so I just wanted to bring that to the board update you we haven't talked about it since September um and again Cindy will come back to uh to the board and give us some live feedback after we've

kind of been out there in Pilot mod for few weeks um and then it's not on here but so I do want to just update the board quickly we have receive our fiscal stress designation so those of you that have been around for a while this is something that comes out about mid January Sean and I actually last week were saying hey we haven't gotten our designation and then literally that afternoon it was in our um our inboxes so New York State Controllers Office off uh take a series of data points from our state reports our financial statements our audit reports and they compile not only for us but for all school districts a designation to identify districts that may be on a path of um a stress factor so Canastota has received their designation

and it's a little bit um backwards in the way that you would think of it so I just remind of what what it uh the designation stations are our designation is no designation that is positive and that's the highest designation you can get in the categories of designations no designation is good susceptible meaning there may be some points that you need to look at um along your path to financial stability moderate and uh the last one is significant so again it's it's a rubric it's a system they take a whole bunch of data points uh over the last 3 years our designation has been no designation and we again uh received that this is now public information it was posted last week so I I bring that to you in case you hear something um

about that next H field trips um I will be taking um two students to the Albany to the capital for Lobby week um it's kind of an exciting trip for the kids um the new yor state EPF um coordinates this for us we will be taking their bus Which uh starts out in Western New York and picks up people along the way um it's gotten so big that we now take up two hotels um um yeah cuz we have so many new chapters and new schools that have agriculture programs that were growing Beyond capacity um as a matter of fact in um the State Convention we now have no place in New York that can fit us so that's where we are but the two children that are going one is a senior um she's

my president and the other one is a freshman um the senior is working two jobs she's at work right now and the Freshman is playing volleyball so that's why they're not here um and the Freshman student is Riley Rutherford um she um has expressed to me that she wants to run for district office when she is a junior or senior and so I'm trying to get her as much exposure as possible so she can reach that goal she's very committed um but this trip is very special because the students go um their first day they go into training all day long with State staff and um they learn um legislative language how to address the legislators and Senators by their correct name and um they also learn about bills how the bills are put through

the government the state government um and how that process goes they're also brought up to date on some current agricultural issues that they can discuss with the Senators and legislators um and then the second day um the students are put into groups and we go with the students and they actually meet with their legislators so um Riley and McKenzie will be meeting with our legislators that deal with our school in our area um and the interesting thing and I told the students is that the the adults do none of the speaking whatsoever we stand in the background the kids do it all so the kids are the ones who talk talk to the legislators they bring up the issues they discuss issues and those kinds of things so it's very very good experience for the

students um so that's what we'll be doing for two days going be kind of fun is there any questions that you might have PA I a question when they talk school specific information um do you know what the platform is and ask normally they don't talk about school specific stuff they're talking about agricultural issues um and some of that may be like food insecurity so like my students might be talking about the project that we're doing through the grant that we got and how we're providing food through the community can have to schools they might say something about that but they don't do any school issues they're they're mostly concentrating on FFA um and agricultural issues any other questions no okay thank you thank you so at this point um I'd like to have a

motion to amend the agenda to include I think I've got to do this in two pieces to include an additional resolution that will allow them to go is that yep so could I have that motion motion second second any discussion all those in favor all those opposed motion Carri so the resolution reads resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board does hereby approve FFA to attend the state leaders experience February 5th and 6th 2024 in Albany New York motion some second second any discussion we'd like to have you come back and give us a report abolutely um all those favor all those opposed motion carried continuing with new business resolve that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board do hereby approved the following budget transfers as per attachment

motion subot second second any discussion all those in favor I all those opposed oos motion carried resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board dis heere by adopt Bond resolution for the capital Improvement project motion some second second has be call right yeah so now we have a roll call Scott hi orang yes Mark hi laurren I yes Ed yes motion Carri resolved upon the recommendation of the superintendent school the board does hereby approve the squa that all you saying seeker seeker seeker yep resolution for the 24 2024 2025 Capital outlay project motion some second SK I skipped one oh another roll call sorry let's backtrack still finish okay finish with four all right sorry um so I made the motion second I'll second any discussion all those in favor I

all those opposed motion carried that was for number four that was four right so now let's go back to three resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board does hereby approve the resolution for the architectural engineering contract with King and King Architects for post referendum services for the 2023 Capital Improvement project motion some moved second second any discussion a roll call roll call Scott hi Moren yes Mark Lauren yes Kathleen yes Debbie yes motion Carri five resolve that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board do hereby approve the contract with King and King Architects for the 2024 2025 Capital outlay project motion some moved okay discussion this is continuing right Sean this is this is the annual the capital outlay doesn't require the referendum the it's built into

the annual the annual budget so this is an extension of the work that is done every year do you want to correct talk more yeah just because it's a little confusing because we have a we have a multiple um resolutions here this is approving The Architects to proceed with the 2425 capitalist Capital outlay project single building has to happen in 12 months is not part of a capital project if it is not so this is contingent on a successful budget okay but this is part two of the 2324 so in order to be in the queue at se and we have and when we have a successful budget in the March vote we can go right to S and then pH at Peter would be able to happen in the S this is the floor

this the flooring so we're doing um floor 1 23 24 2425 it will be designated for floor two so that all that work will be done before SE so this is key in it so totally separate from the other from the capital project that was approved last month this is a separate Pro separate much smaller project and then six and seven have to do well six anyway has to do with the roll or with the capital project right all those in favor all those opposed carried six resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board do hereby approve the resolution for the contract with Turner Construction Construction Management Services on the 2023 Capital Improvement project motion second discussion roll call Scott hi Moren yes Mark hi Warren yes Kleen yes Debbie yes

motion carried seven resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board does hereby approve the 2024 bus proposition resolution motion some moved second second second discussion roll call Scott hi Moren yes uh Mark hi Lauren yes Kathleen yes Abby yes motion carried eight resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board do hereby create a teacher assistant positioned for 2023 2024 school year motion I moved second discussion all those in favor I I all opposed motion carried resolved that upon the recommendation of the super of schools the board do hereby adjust the staff development date on the student program calendar from March 14th 2024 to April 8th 2024 motion so moved second second discussion you want to see what you sure so this is just an adjustment in the

calendar we had a a u half staff development day originally scheduled for March 14th is you probably are hearing as we're getting closer to the date there's the solar eclipse coming on April 8th there's a lot of discussion because of the timing because it's happening in like a midafternoon around 3:00 as time frame that there's a lot of concern related to that of of people looking into the into the eclipse it's what our understanding is it varies tremendously even from a few miles away one way direction or another there there's some concerns about traffic in certain areas with people who are wanting to see it so for all of those reasons um we decided it made sense to do a a switch so we get our students home sooner um and then we just would

fix change that for the date um so March 14th would be a regular day of instruction we just wanted to make that move with some Advanced warnings so families knew in could plan around it so it's just again an attempt to just be cautious and make sure that we're uh putting safety uh first with with dealing with our our instructional day all those in favor I all those opposed motion carried 10 resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board is hereby approved the 2024 2025 student program calendar motion some moved second discussion all those in favor I all those opposed motion carried 11 resolved that upon the recommendation of Superintendent of Schools board does hereby approve the following policies policy 7120 education records policy 5011 workplace violence prevention policy motion some

moved second second any discussion these were things that had to be time sensitive were these the policies yeah the workforce uh violence prevention policy every district is having to make an adjustment based on um new legislation that really happened just last month so everybody's in in in the same boat um so there's a process to this we have to have a policy in place but the policy is really accompanied by and backed up by a lot of uh coordination uh internally in the school with the part with the the various um unions and so this is an ongoing process but this is sort of paves the way for us to be able to implement this process um as is required by by law all oh go ahead no that's that's it all those in favor

all those opposed motion carried unfortunately our young ladies aren't here I think one's playing volleball and one's not feeling well I think um so we'll look forward in the future committee reports facilities facilities has officially not met um but M Leon and Mr petta have been regularly engaged with some of the behind the scenes work getting our contractors and things our partners construction managers aligned um there's nothing new to officially report um we'll start seeing some more updates here I think 31st is our next facilities meeting um so we'll have more to follow up then but more behind the scenes St continue to Roll Along thank you um Finance uh we've met this evening just prior to um this meeting to uh be able to ask questions for um our contract negotiation process that will

be upcoming of the the fin facilitated intensive negotiation uh policy policy has not officially met um we've had a few of these policies the ones we just um approved come through the state from State Ed that we've had to review um prior to this um but no official policy meetings been scheduled yet or past scheduled safy has not met since the last meeting academic um gra to the fac and discussed details like you know who reps should be frequency of meetings and so on processes moving forward with the CTA um we touched on curriculum Council functions social studies roster was completed meeting started this month writing's intended as a standing item to develop a more cohesive approach in the district so some of the functions that that's been using um touched on the status of

the advisory cabinet and issues that they are currently addressing um like extra extracurricular eligibility management uh grading and assessment uh master schedule and advisory period that's another thing that they're de uh dealing with those discussions are ongoing um the 3 to8 assessment report info we are waiting on the regional report so we table that till our next [Music] meeting uh we discussed that staff development day very sad for uh Pi Day but better for safety um we discussed the new Innovative programming overview like a uh firefighter CTE pathway and things of that nature um possibility for a new series of parent Community presentations and uh the retention policy review was tabled until next meeting just because we ran out of time uh next meeting is February 28th after midwinter break you are very busy best

way to be um mascot want an update on the mascot sure um as I think we've up tried to provide regular updates on this um school name mascot issue that a lot of districts around the state are dealing with we've had and several members uh Mr Crosby Mr Blanchard have been participants as well in that process U with our our community um process of reviewing our status relative to the requirements of the state um we've met a couple of times I think the meetings have been positive um that we're trying to frame the discussions that would happen in the community about how to go about potentially creating a new name for the district that recently we've taken a step back from that process we've intentionally tried to go slow because there was a two-year window

for schools to be able to adjust to this state requirement um we received information over the summer when we asked for clarification that led us to believe that this was inevitable that we needed to move forward with the process and so that's why we started the committee process we put a hold uh sort of press pause on that process because um some other information came to us that we wanted to seek some further clarification on we wanted more information from the state um just a couple um yesterday we were able to have a meeting um that was pulled together by our bosei superintendent uh Mr Bulman um with the the person who's actually in charge of this process for the state where we were able to ask some more specific questions talk about our particular

circumstances um and I I believe there's some recognition that there are at times different s involved for example to what degree did districts um adjust to the state's um recommendations 20 plus years ago really in the early 2000s and canistota did make some adjustments at that point and um so it was a good conversation um it's important to I think all of us um you know to get it right and we want to make sure that we're doing things that are respectful um and we want to make sure that we treat people with fairness and respect but we also don't want to uh prematurely make decisions that maybe don't need to be made or don't have full information so we're intentionally being deliberate about the process um we've been given some uh a direct you

net directive we've been given some guidance I guess from the state with how to proceed so we're going to be putting some things in writing to them and and and laying out um a description of our particular circumstances in more detail we'll await their feedback so that we know that whatever we do there shouldn't be any second guessing down the road maybe we should have done this or we should have questioned that or maybe we should have waited we're not going to have any of those regrets um so again trying to get the right balance of being respectful to to um to really everybody uh in our community but also not making a rash decision that we might regret because it wasn't informed fully by all the factors involved this is a new thing it's

not like this happens all the time and so we think deliberate is best we'll continue to update um at board meetings and on our website with where we are in the process but for people who are again watching what's happening around the state you'll see that there are different districts you know usually every week there's some District making an announcement we're fine and that we're working in cooperation with the state they understand that we have a 2-year window to implement it so we're fine with timeline U and we have already taken steps and already have a standing uh committee who's who's been working on this issue so in good shape and we'll see it through and again we'll continue to update our community is we get clarification um from the state any questions board comment

period anybody got I got one quick thing well I apologize I may not be quick um I was I was hoping I was hoping she could be here tonight um but I know she's over in the Tomato gym or L law gym um and we put it on our website on social media um but as public wanted to recognize um Marshall L law um who we talk greatly about all the stuff our teachers do um and she's a legend in this building truly is um I'm not going to take credit for writing this um but I just wanted to read um for those of you don't know she was just recently recognized for the New York State volleyball um hall of fame um so I'm just going to write read a quick passage that they

shared um just cuz I think coach deserves it and um yeah we have a legend right here in our own Hall so bear with me as I read this quickly a huge congratulations to First member of the 2024 Hall of Fame class Marshall leaw Marshall Le law is a canistota high school volleyball coaching Legend having coached at canistota nearly 50 years Le Law's coaching career began in 1973 with the cannesota girls varsity volleyball team where she has continued coaching until present taking taking just 3 years off from 2004 to 2007 after retiring from teaching as a physical education instructor at canistota her oncore success is on mistakable through her over 800 career wins 40 League titles 18 sectional titles and nine Regional titles Lea also served as the canistota boys varsity volleyball coach with a

um so again I apologize for reading all that I don't take any credit for that um but again just to kudos to some of our staff um coach Le was one of my teachers um and it's great to see that we have staff like that still in the building and and working with her kids she truly is remarkable young lady so that's it sorry to blabble [Music] on well deserved very well deserved anyone else I just wanted to reiterate congrat guess congratulations and thank you to uh Mrs Peron for that gret writing stood out to me during the update gret writing isn't fun or easy and it's uh you know it's outside normal scope for a lot of positions and I I appreciate the effort that went into it it's good for the kids anyone

else Sean again I think it's worth just reiterating again uh what Mr Crosby spoke about and what uh Mr snog Mrs Clark earlier it's important to take time to recognize people who are have set the tone great examples for our students and for staff and so get congratulations to uh in some cases uh Legends you know in the state but um great uh fortunate to have outstanding um Educators and people who were were proud to have working with our kids um just another thing that we want to update everyone on is the progress of the capital project um as Lauren said there's some things happening now behind the scenes it looks like there's a lull right because at the beginning of December you know we passed the most recent um $30 million Capital project now

that doesn't look like there's a lot happening right because there's not actual work being done we're in but there's a lot of work being done behind the scenes and that we've been meeting regularly with our Architects and our construction managers to move the process along after the the U the uh successful vote last month uh the work really transitions to really between now and and probably the end of the school school year um with the design work the timing out of the project of uh as as many people already are aware we're talking about renovation of large spaces Gathering spaces that there has to be a strategy of when are you taking some of those spaces offline when we're re renovating the gyms the cafeterias the auditoriums um so that work is happening um talking

about um sort of the details and the specifics of what that's going to look like we have to construct that in cooperation with our our architect and and construction manager with the idea that by the the end of June beginning of July then we're able to submit those plans to the state and it takes you know often around you in the neighborhood of six month months to get approval so again it looks like well there's work happening we don't we're not seeing the work physically being done yet with the hopes that around the first of the year um around this time next year that um we'll have approval then we move through the bid process and to give people just a frame of reference our last project four years ago in December was also passed

first week in December the work actually started in March of the following year about 15 or so months after the actual successful vote so lot happening uh really appreciate the work of uh M Leon and Mr Campell and Mr kden and and really a lot of people who are putting a lot of work in behind the scenes and constructing this project also a lot of people who are going to becoming very involved our principles for example are going to become very involved with this design because we're getting deeper into the design work and the sequencing um so um it's exciting process we get impatient because we want it done when you think of what it's going to bring to the district and what an impact it's going to have overall on so many people because

so many people you know school's the center centerpiece of this uh community for sure and this project really impacts a lot of the things that people see and are part of in the district so looking forward to that and we'll continue to update people again as we get um as we move through the process and let you know where we are in the process um probably attached to that is uh in keeping people updated we're in the process of scheduling a series of public information sessions um they're not really oneandone sessions it's really an attempt to have a continuing series of opportunities where we can engage with the school Community about topics that are timely or in some cases maybe they're a newer concept that needs further explanation Mr Blanchard referred to for example um

you know some public sessions specific to um for example how do we provide interventions for our students what are what are the ways we use tools to help students uh a couple of several of the principles actually in their updates mentioned and wa benchmarking for example well what does that mean how is that you know because sometimes uh benchmarking or assessment that kind of thing gets a bad wrap because it's okay here we go again we're testing testing testing kids to death and actually um the real point of it is that we want to make the work that we do every day with kids as productive as possible so we use this as a tool to really be able to identify how we can best help kids um feel good about their skills and their

competencies and abilities and and and make them feel good about where they are and their ability to learn so that's something that believe we actually have the date um we have a session um that is scheduled for March 6 that was just recently we were able to nail that down um at 5:30 p.m. I believe that's going to be in this room but we'll be publishing that widely um um promoting this series of informational sessions um I've also spoke um quite a bit about the work that um um Liz garfo has been engaged with with a new concept of of micr credentialing which is the wave of the future the present and the future it's not going away it's the language that many businesses now talk colleges talk it's something that is going to be

very present in every student students um daily routine really um in in projecting into the coming years but people don't necessarily understand what it is and um sometimes I think it's oversimplified or it sounds like it's the latest buzz word to come down the pike and this is anything about that this is talking about most practical practical Community uh really tied educational experiences that kids can have uh we are fortunate that we have Liz graph um graph was one of the best people who could be an ambassador for that project and so she's going to be presenting that for us um and February 28th again at another session that again will be published widely um so that people have questions about it um they want to see some examples of what it's looks like in

action and she's also going to highlight some of the really terrific Community Partners who've been working with us on this project we've been having month L meetings with business partners and Community Partners and that's been a very positive experience because they're really the field expert the content experts who are helping to inform this process as we construct valuable learning opportunities for kids so um that that that'll be a great um presentation um Esports Mr Schultz talked about we're starting something that's brand new we're going to I I and and anticipating having other updates because while we're getting our feet wet this year um we're getting really lined up for even bigger things next year when we might be having a more formal competition Focus along with the inter mural we'll probably have the best of

both worlds but we'll be expanding that program because of the over really overwhelming interest that has come about um in talking to students about this um look at Miss Leon this is one of her favorite subjects we're getting into budget season we're going to be having a session apart from the normal yes we'll have our normal budget hearings and things like that um but we're going to be doing additional sessions on for example understanding state aid um and the importance of districts leveraging funding or uh leveraging the um what is um you know what things that would qualify to generate state aid or how are districts funded uh very important Central piece of our budgeting process and so that's also going to be scheduled um in the next couple of months and uh attached to

that I just want to compliment and thank uh Miss Leon and really uh compliment to the board that the uh once again as she noted the fiscal stress report was a a positive it's nice it's one thing for for us to look at what we are doing uh in the district and say yep we believe we're in making sound decisions on behalf of the district we're looking out for the interest of students but we're also cognizant of uh the taxpayer dollars and how they're being spent um but it's another thing to have the C controller's office come and look at it and give their assessment so it's meaningful to have that it's has happened probably for a decade now or close to it where coller's office will put out this this report so it's good

uh validation I guess and U to have them peek behind the curtain look at what our financial condition is and saying that we're in the in the really the the best designation of of the possible designations so um again those are just it's I guess a preview of some of the things that are coming up um and look for those dates and times of those uh presentations that will be happening I will say also we're always open for ideas or suggestions uh if there's a question if there's something that we're um doing something that we're setting as a priority for the district we're always willing to uh explain the rationale and the reason and the logic behind it or any piece of it so um if there are things that people would like us to

have their offer presentations on we'd love to uh to uh be able to accommodate that and put something together if there's an interest that's what I have thank you Personnel recommendations all appointments are pending clearance on fingerprinting retirements and resignations res resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of school the board does hereby accept Megan tan letter of resignation as a school nurse effective August 1 2023 motion vote second second all those in favor I I all those opposed motion carried resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board do hereby accept calling Fin's letter of resignation is a o A2 effective January 9th 2024 motion some second all those in favor I all those opposed motion carried resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the board is
