001conations to the flag of the United States of America for it stands naice [Music] next we have the super report good evening everyone um thank you m lonsky there's a couple things I wanted to report on I'm just actually going to use the overhead because there's a couple things there some visuals that I want to share with the community just have to set this up [Music] as soon as it comes up I apologize right so can you get that one so on August 21st the Board of Education had a boardre which I was a really successful productive time we actually started about 5:00 and end about 10:30 so it was a good five and half hours of work that we needed to get into in terms of developing the Board of Education goals and other
002things that we look at so I just want to show the community the agenda that we kind of worked on I should so as I said a moment ago we looked at quite a few things the first thing we looked at was the priorities of the board of education then we looked at finalizing at least the basic template for the Board of Education goals we use what is called the smart um goals plan which looks at how to develop a goal and to plan out the goal itself looking at it looking at it from the perspective of setting something up that is specific that is measurable that is achievable that is relevant and time out so it gives sort of meat and substance to the goals that you create so at the meeting we we
003agreed to five primary goals that we're going to look at in a moment if you want to finalize those now actually close that for second I you look at this so just just um so one of the activities we looked at and it was actually a suggestion from Mr where she wanted us to look at a braap which was a great activity because what we did is we looked at what what the Board of Education priorities were because sometimes the priorities align very well with the Board of Education gos and sometimes they not they don't so uh we went back and forth and this is so we use a whiteboard we use poit notepads each board member has prioritized their five priorities put it up on the board and then DN kind of work to
004categorize them by different categories so I took what you develop or we develop and I put it in a brain map so you want to click braap and that's the final so I'm hoping I captured the vision you had in your head on I'm not really sure but uh so we looked at the priorities and we broke them off into different categories one was improve relationships Community Teamwork for all groups student um ex official board membership I'm my gr staff student teacher morale transpar consistency um Knowledge Management Communications cap Improvement presentations and on the other side College and Career offers physical responsibility academic scores and graduates and teacher PD and and from that we kind of branched off into other sort of subcategories so what I found most interesting in this activity and thank you
005joh for kind of introducing this to the group was that two week prior to having the board retrieve I sent the Board of Education a Sur and I had about 15 questions that kind of addressed a lot of these questions where I asked the board to identify what were their priorities for the 2425 school year what were some of the things they wanted us to work on what are some of the things that they would identify as a district as strengths what are weaknesses what areas do they feel we need to work on um and I was able to sort of take that information and compile what I defined as sort of draft board of education GRS now what I found when we presented this when we did the brain map is that there was
006a lot of line so Not only was there alignment with the responses that the Board of Education had to the survey but there was there was actually alignment to the brain map that we created together and it took a little bit of time but it was a great activity it really was because it it allowed it allowed the Board of Education I think to vocalize some of their interests some of their concerns and obviously the priorities that they have for the 2425 school so I think that it was a great activity it did take a little bit of time to kind of create this because of the fact that some of the posted not I didn't understand the handwriting so I apologize if I didn't have everything correct but I did try my best so
007I am going to make this available on the website so that the community can see the work that the board did you can that thank you the other piece we did is that we were able to create tentative Board of Education mod so if you click on the thir bullet so despite the fact that we did not create this specific chart of the small gos because that is going to take some time which I hope to have done not at the 11th meeting September 11th but the following meeting because it is going to take us some time to kind of go back and forth to decide whether or not we feel comfortable with the language of the small gos but we do have preliminary goals you want to just go down a bit so the
008board of education so the first one of the first priorities we look at and I think this would unanimous with all five members is the idea of student achievement unfortunately we do know that our scores districtwide is not are not what we want them to they're just not I'm just going to be very blunt very friend I think that as a district we could do a lot better I think we should be doing a lot better so we have to do a deep dive of our instruction program and determine Why students are not performing The Way We believe that they can so the first priority is student achievement the one of Education to providing or students with academic Improvement opportunities that provide multiple Pathways for success in growth now what the smart go is going
009to do is going to itemize what that looks like like how are we going to that do that how how are we going to measure the success is it just region examinations AP exams or we going to run sort of like internal assessments as how students are performing that is something that is for coming like I said that should be done not at the next meeting but but definitely by the following meeting in September the next one is facility maintenance and movement we know that we had two unfortunate um Bond vote that that unfortunately the first one we put up was about $45 million second one was about 13.5 we unfortunately failed both but this in both bonds there there was identify work that we desperately need we have areas of concern within our entire
010District of Oiler systems of roofs um we did a walk through today and like a preliminary walk through yesterday with the Board of Education and our Minister the team and we can see that there are areas that we need to work on there areas that we need to improve so we so the board is committed to is dedicated to maintenance and Improvement facilities and ground of the C School District how what does that look like that once again will be laid out in the smart uh plan your SM go plan so that is something that we will aoriz and determine exactly what that's going to look like is that going to look like inviting community members to come come together and look at uh possibly working with the fac facilities committee and looking at our
011facilities and and making a det as to what we need to improve upon and what we need to prioritize yes absolutely the third is communication and Community engagement the board is dedicated to devoting trust and community support for our schools we Endeavor to enhance current communication processes by creating uniform practices and expectations transparency withed practices and engagement engage of multiple stakeholders will guide our decisions so once again involving all of you in the conversation involving the community in the conversation and making a determination how do we engage our community so then in a moment we are going to look at Board of Education committees that is a way that we try to involve at many committee members as we can and I have to be honest some of them are well attended and some of
012them are not it really depends we we have play them out with times in the past we used to do a particular time right after school four o' we saw that the attendance was sporadic so we changed them we orated the time from 4:00 to 6 o' that the that the attendance would improve somewhat but what we lost was teacher mod because to to have teachers stay from you know 3:00 dispenser or 2:30 dispens start the secondary to stay for 6:00 when they live 45 years of grade that wasn't something that a lot of teachers were able to do or so we have to look at that as a possibility um number four FAL education soy the board of education is committed to the development of strong bu practices to meet the needs of our
013students and S Community to short and long-term fiscal planning we will enhance our programs prepare for all collect barain agreements and ensure the stability of our facilities once again we have to look at and this is something that har I looking at the entire minist team is looking at what programs are we currently offering that have the most impact for kids and have the most impact and value for so we are going to be drilling down this entire year on every program that is offered to make a determination as what it is trly impacting students whether or not it is something that we can continue to sustain and whether or not we need to look at um cutting it in the future or minimizing the cost of it in some way cheap form the last
014one is um social emotion learning and diversity equity and inclusion and very similar to work we've done in the previous years utilizing District's mission statement uh equity and education plan and policy the board education is the board of education is devoted to continuing to create procedures that support the social Ando learning of students and eable practices while ensuring that these processes continue to align with our instructional program and fiscal responsibility so that is the preliminary goals that the board approved at our last meeting once we have the smart go smart goals laid out then that will be presented to the community and the board would have an opportunity to adopt then not and the adoption phase now so if you CLI on the board of education committees okay so right now we have 10 standing
015Board of Education comms so that's so one of the things we did is that we looked at the current committees we have and we had a very in-depth conversation in terms of what is the purpose of a board of education committee Board of Education committees are created by the board they're created for an advisory purpose they're created for research purposes they're created for the committee itself to make recommendations to the Board of Education they can be a standalone Board of Education committee meaning it's made up of just board members or it could be a a compilation of Board of Education members as well as an administrator sort of guiding the conversation creating agendas and doing the day-to-day work in terms of communication with the community members the committee members excuse me so what we did
016is that we laid out the days we laid out the times for the board and we actively got the board to sign up for the various committees that they will sit so as you can see we have like say the first committee curriculum there is a link to each committee that takes you to the website that gives you more information regarding the uh that particular committee and the work that that committee does and the work that they have done we have agenda and minute archives so that you can at least have an idea we do encourage all community members to join so one of the misnomers that exists is that despite the fact that we have on our website an invitation for community members to join a committee to be a standing member of a
017committee they all open to the public so at any time any Community member can attend a Committee Member so I repeat at any time a Community member can attend a committee meeting and we encourage attendance because two for that two reasons one we want to engage a community in as much dialogue as we can but want to listen to and hear from different perspectives like Josh may have a perspective Rich you may have a perspective and we need to know that because otherwise we're working on a vacuum of just a few members that consistently attend the committee meetings and that's good sometimes it could be a good representation but someone else that doesn't normally attend the Committees can come with a fresh perspective and provide us insights that we may not have so we we
018are encouraging as much participation as possible we normally run the Committees here so we have you know pretty ample space to have as many community members attend as possible so um and the dates are in the printed calendar they're also on the online calendar but if you sign up you'll get reminders um for when the Committees are so that is another good thing about signing up you you'll get the agendas and updates and things like that so one of the things that we do do is that we not only post the agendas but we post the minutes and we do post on the agendas itself there most likely on all the agendas there links to supplemental material or material that was discussed at the meeting so if someone let's say was hesitant and I'm speaking
019to the community you feel hesitant to attend a meeting at any time committee meeting because you may not feel that you understand or you know what has been discussed in the past you can take a moment and look at previous agendas look at the sub material that we've included to support the topics included in the agenda to kind of give yourself an idea of like some of the things that we've been discussing and the board is going to be very active this year we're communicating with the uh individuals that are chairing each committee to ensure that uh the message is consistent that it's aligned with the goals of the district and that it's moving in the right direction and that the individual has the resources and the support that he or she needs to continue
020moving the committee in a positive way all right so you want to scroll down a little bit because I want to get to something that came up at the at Alp so a little further go to the bot so right now we have 10 standing committees so something was mentioned regarding Community like how do we involve the community we know that as I mentioned before in terms of the Capital Improvements we did have two bonds that fortunately did not pass uh there are there's still the work is on we still need to do the work the only way for us to accomplish the work is through another cap movement at some point My Hope Is that the board and the community is going to support moving forward with something when is that going to happen
021I don't know large the larger the larger more High ticketed items where we have funding that we could support some the smaller items but the replacing the boilers uh the roof work that we need to do the complete gutting of the secondary parking lot and redoing it because right now we have Pooles the plumbing the plumbing the plumbing issue that we have at the middle school so that came up as well so there's big ticketed items that we just based on our budget we just can't support the only way we can support it is by putting a reasonable practical Capital bond out to the committee out to the community so that they can understand our need and hopefully build support around so one so what we decided to do what the board decided to do
022is create a new committee entitled Community connections and the purpose of it and I'm just going to read what I created based on my conversation with the board is the intent of the committee would be the following in an effort to develop strong partnership with multiple stakeholder groups the Board of Education committed to working with our community to Institute Community um communication methods that that will lay transparency easy access to school information and instill trust to further this intent the board of education has decided to develop a Comm Community connections that is STS with reviewing current practices and making recommendations to the board that will enhance districtwide Communications so it is something that I'm going to share and I'm hoping I'm going to share with Mr teny because I think he's express some interest and
023doing that kind of work and the Really the intent of that particular committee is also just to bring people together to hear some of the concerns that you may have some of the questions that you may have to address those questions to really open up the dialogue that we can exchange a dialogue of of transparency of trust and build it build that piece so that when and if we do put another Bond vote forward that we might have the support that we need to get a and encourage community members other community stakeholders and different groups um so like n um uh the PTO booster clubs you know try to encourage everybody to attend so we can have that that dialog so this is a very busy week for the district so uh today we had
024um our administrative Council Retreat where I mean we had a great time in the sense it was a productive time we looked at some of the new initiatives that we doing just why uh the transition changes we're making internally as well as we had we did the Clifton strength training at the end that looked at every administrator's personal um traits qualities leadership qualities and how they align together and how they align to the work that we are going to be doing moving forward that was pretty much the entire day at about 4:30 that ended I think at about 3 I ran home on came back at 4:30 walk through of the buildings and the reason and one of the major reasons why I think a walk through is so important for the board and even
025for the community once we begin this work is that sometimes the concepts are somewhat nous when we say that there there repairs that need to get up sometimes you have to physically see it you have to feel it to really understand the thing and so we did that today we spent about I think 90 minutes we started about 4:30 we ended literally as 6:00 um tomorrow we do have an orientation for new teachers here uh it is a time for all of our new teachers we're welcoming about 11 new teachers and a lot of them were for retirements individuals that retired positions that uh that that we included in this year's budget but it is a time for them to put eyes to every administrator in the district I think this is you're going to
026come at some point tomorrow right just okay good excellent uh so and we do take them on a bus ride Janine loves the bus ride come on Janine I love the bus ride you love the bus ride love the so what we do is that we take all the staff members around the entire Community because we want them to see that there is dichotomy that exists within our community so we want them to see that because they need to know the students that they will be working with and they need to know that there are different circumstances every child that walks into their classroom so that's the reason we do that uh that's the mall and I'm sure I have a lot on so Thursday no I'm still on tomorrow I know other do tomorrow
027but um Thursday we have our staff conf that begins at age 30 we have our PL session uh Miss ly is going to come to give what I believe from what I read is a great welcome speech to the staff We Gather the entire staff together they will be in the auditorium so I apologize now but they will be in the auditorium um and I give a speech and I give sort of an introduction of the work that we are going to do so I introduce the board goals I introduce the building goals I do also give a message in terms of the expectations we have as a district and the work that we're going to be doing moving forward from there the teachers kind of break off into um Union meetings and then they
028have faculty meetings and at the end of the day at the latter part part of the day after day they will go back in their classrooms to set up their classrooms so that is Thursday and I think that's what we have this week so that's that's my any questions from the community that brings us to to um public comment please note that this is the opportunity for persons who wish to speak or have written letters to the board regarding topics that are included on this agenda speakers sign in the district prior to approaching the US Mone and indicate your topic of comment keep comments brief and to speak for no longer than three minutes members of the public will have the opportunity to speak about any Topic at the end of the meeting anybody com
029I just want to um I had a comment the Committees so one of the things that was on there was um I proposed was creating between curriculum and Technology um that we to combine those into like sub Comm since like so much of the educational um platforms and software programs that are out there are um inherently technology or working with digital learning or working in lended learning in the postco world and I think it's really important for us to bring those two pieces together especially preparing children for 21st century skills um jobs of the future and that they need to be equipped with the technology skills so also looking at things of how like AI is being integrated into the curriculum we sure we're proceeding um in ways um looking at how we're protecting our
030district there but like a combination so like a sub sort of uh combining those two things so if you saw that up there comination so you'll hear more about when that will occur yeah so we we did talk about that and we talked about at the AC meeting today we also had a a legal firm come in and give us a legal briefing we did at some point did uh get into the AI discussion and how to sort of Safeguard ourselves and safe our kids um right now there isn't a lot of legislation out there regarding AI we believe that it is forthcoming so we are waiting for that and once we get it obviously we will do what we can to U modify our practices to ensure that we are compliance with whatever laws
