001stream or screen depending on screen depending on how it works just setting it up right now there we go yeah it went live okay so we should be good i'm going to start recording reporting live yep sorry i'm speaking all right dan i think you did it thank you dan you have like a half hour break before you're back on see ya thanks dan hey john hey jeannie guys got a nice fresh piece of swordfish sitting next to me that i'm trying to sneak in before we start our meeting so did you bring some to share [Laughter] is it grilled no yeah rocky got fresh grilled swordfish asparagus and asparagus brussels sprouts with some balsamic glaze with potatoes and um yeah it's a good meal a hard life john that's why you're keeping that kid

005here we go uh welcome everybody hope you're having a good evening hopefully we won't keep all these people too long but let me do my typical presentation around cobit numbers etc because there is some et cetera in here i'm going to share my screen i apologize because i know when i do that you really can't see each other i know it's kind of nice to see folks let me just arrange my screen here and uh can i get a thumbs up if you can see that all good all right perfect thank you so let's just dive right in um giving my bi-weekly update some nice pictures it's good to look at oops um somebody's in the waiting room deb are you able to see and manage whoever that is or do i need to nope

006i got it okay i couldn't see who it is hopefully it's somebody that's allowed to be here i'm gonna be ready to put him right back in the waiting room otherwise i think it might be mike okay all right oh yeah cause he's still three dots he hasn't changed his name yet from our last activity hey mike hey there so um anyway good things happening around campus uh worth celebrating let's take a look at our coven numbers this is student specific uh remember the great line is the quarantine the red line is the isolation red line isolation they have co they had covet you'll see this is coming out of the holiday recess we had kind of a peak within a steady decline both isolation and quarantine um february break was right in here where

007it was it was flat it was pretty low as you can see both quarantine and isolation i shared multiple times last week that i was worried about the trends coming out of february break and we could see the numbers climbing of both quarantine and uh isolations actually jumped up you know we had almost 20 and over over you know about 20 quarantines and over 10 isolations among students last week happy to report those numbers have come back down this week um our quarantine numbers are still you know they're not coming down as sharply as we like but they're still trending in the right direction if you look at where we are here with 14 students in quarantine five in isolation as of today it's certainly better at our peak when we had 75 in quarantine

008and 24 in isolation at one time so good news there when we look at our staff numbers again after the holiday break we kind of were at a high we had uh staff 19 quarantines at their high and uh 10 with covet at one time on these dates but since uh february 17th i'm gonna knock on wood we haven't had any staff members uh with covid um and our our quarantine numbers have stayed right about three dipped to two went up to five but our four i mean but stayed you know it's been at three today you'll see we have two staff members in quarantine and um and zero in isolation those are good trends looking at our overall cases and where they're happening uh you'll see oops the slide's not accurate sorry about that

009uh elementary school um it should have i believe should have zero total cases right here active cases right here but we have middle school three and academy two active cases for a total of five and they're all students at this point and as of this point we've had 192 total copy cases in our school district and so we're we're in a much better place than we were a month month and a half ago and sincere credit to all of our extended braves family for making that happen staff students parent parents everybody doing the right thing and putting us in a good spot so next steps as a leadership team we continue to think think proactively and try to plan as much as possible uh last week senator helming shared that actually two two weeks ago

010now that uh dr zucker was supposed to be releasing brand new uh school guidance in that it's of high high importance those were dr zucker's words and he's um governor cuomo's medical basically medical director for the state uh and he anticipated that guidance would be coming out the following week and that was last week and never did in fact they had a press conference today dr zucker did speak but didn't mention schools and so um you know he said last week we're still not there we're still waiting on that but um seeing how the trends are going in the right direction seeing how the governor is saying he would like schools to fully reopen and president biden is saying the same as a leadership team we're trying to wrap our heads around what would a

011full reopening look like midstream so if the governor did change the guidance and really it boils around a few things and i've shared this before it's a six feet distancing uh it would have to be three feet in order to fully reopen uh and also consideration for transportation and consideration for lunches those those items are insurmountable right now for us to any open anymore and we showed a picture during the forum last week of the academy cafeteria during lunch and you know we have all those desks spread out at six feet and it's it's full it is absolutely full we're using the atrium we've been and we have the uh uh the i guess we call the auxiliary or wrestling gym that you see mr kane here with us tonight that's where band is you

012know we're using spaces to spread people out to keep program going um and they're all being used so uh you know if that guidance was to change in week one as a leadership team we would have to digest and understand what that guidance says what can we do what could this look like and we would have to define what it looks like we would then host a forum for families and create a written document as well for the families that do not attend the forum to explain exactly what it would look like if we were to fully reopen and then we put a survey out where families could understand what it would look like and make a selection i wish to finish this year in a virtual format and they could switch or i would

013wish to finish this year in person fully in person based on what i know that model to look like we would compile all of that information and then the next two to five weeks and that's an aggressive timeline we would be scheduling and working on all the logistics whether it's transportation or rebuilding a schedule so forth and so on the reason i say that's an aggressive timeline is because this hasn't been done before to rebuild an entire schedule in infinite campus our our student management system while we're in the midst of a school year it hasn't been done and i'm not saying by canada it's just not been done and so what how do what does that even look like how does it work you know issues with grades being pulled over if a teacher

014changes we you know we don't want to lose data uh and we need to make sure it's as seamless as possible because the other piece of it is if if this means a lot of kids change teachers that's not going to make people happy either and so we you know we need to be thoughtful about this and and and really work to make it happen we talked as a leadership team last week that maybe we could take the schedule we have and 80 percent of it is workable but the other 20 needs to be worked reworked and and that could be a uh an optimistic percentage or that could be a way off uh percentage you know we really won't know until we know what families select in a learning model and i remember when

015we did the survey back around november we talked about the desk barriers option and i thought i provided a pretty good amount of detail in that survey had a lot of responses saying i can't make a decision i don't know enough about this yet and so that's the difficulty with putting a survey out now some districts have they have but i fear that if we did that we were unable to provide enough information for people to make an informed decision we will then have to put another survey out which means the original survey really wasn't valid and didn't help us plan or prepare in any way shape or form because decisions and selections would change so we want to be thoughtful we want to be clear and we want to be accurate uh and so

016some you know we don't want to rush just for the sake of rushing we want it to be done right so that would be the piece and then around week six would be hopefully a full reopening in an ideal world if we were allowed to fully reopen we'd be able to do it for let's just say the full fourth fourth quarter let's finish the year on a positive note all back uh so forth and so on but the fourth quarter starts at the end of april and if you look at this timeline you'll see we need a decision now if if we're going to be up and running by the end of april and so that's the difficulty and i'll also say this timeline it's it's really a guess like i said i'll go back

017to we've never really done this before we don't know how it'll go let's say we endeavor and i'm not putting pressure on brian or heidi let's say we endeavor and and they say oh this is easy we've got this and they're done in two or three weeks maybe we have yeah they they're up for the challenge they can see in their eyes um you know we could we could look at it by building or facility if it's possible but you know until we kind of head down this road and start scheduling and seeing what could be possible um and people have their selections it's going to be difficult the other part of it is right now we have about oh i would estimate around 20 that are virtual you know if that number goes to

01830 or 40. that's a whole different schedule or if that number goes to 5 or 10 percent that's a whole different schedule that we need to figure out uh and so those are all considerations that really make it makes it difficult um so anyway that's kind of the timeline right now and so as you know we've been advocating for try i've been advocating i won't use the we word i've been advocating because i only want to speak for myself you know let's find pieces of normalcy let's see can we bring pieces of normalcy back and you know kudos to jim simmons and his crew you know with the athletic program they're really doing a fantastic job i'm going to knock on wood again but we you know we basketball wrestling you name it the quote-unquote

019high-risk sports have been able to compete and be successful this year keeping people safe and so that was a in my mind a victory for kids a victory for the community and perhaps evidence that we can do more maybe it's evidence that we should look at more doing more and revisiting that guidance and so to that no i think you know when i see greg shaking his head yes he knows where i'm going with this is performing arts that from the very beginning was uh at the forefront for for me and many folks you see on the screen right now to advocate for them as well and it's been a long road uh and i think i have hopefully some good news to share about that with you this evening but i do want your

020feedback on it and so as you know uh mr kane and myself we've written letters we've we've done countless interviews you saw him starring in channel 10 news over the weekend again fantastic job by the way mr kane um advocating for the performing arts and so i had had an opportunity to advocate with vince esposito on friday he is the control room chairperson for the governor's office for this kind of re this region and really was trying to press the issue around um extracurricular performing arts so things like the sound or chamber choir or marching band or theater you know the argument all along was if it's credit bearing then kids don't necessarily have much of a choice about it but extracurriculars like sports they have a choice and so we took the angle of

021well these are extracurricular activities they're not credit bearing kids have a choice could we move them to six feet and when they have a you know let's just say the sound were to play for a football game could we give each of those students two tickets for their parents to come and watch them perform um for theater could they do some kind of performance wearing masks and staying distanced at six feet and have two people come to watch them perform could we do those things so we ask those questions and uh you know pretty persistently ask those questions especially on friday um vincent esposito responded and i quoted him here uh performing arts are allowed and this is from the governor's guidance this is what he said this is what the governor is saying performing

022arts are allowed in schools with 12 foot of spacing for singing and breath driven instruments where obviously the person can't wear a face covering can't wear a face covering but you can see the picture of one of our students right here playing an instrument she has a face covering and a bell cover is both and what we're proposing is for first people singing to also wear a face mask i had a meeting with department of health this morning the superintendents in ontario county and the department of health we meet i advocated for i would love to see us have these restrictions for school for learning lesson so that we can transition back to more full time before the school year is out because it sets us up well for september we learn from it we're

023prepared for it give us a chance to see what the science does i believe we can do it safely our numbers are trending and again they reiterated that is the governor's call we we're not it's the new york state department of health when it comes to learning so i wanted to take this opportunity i said you know what about performing arts what about those extracurricular activities and i showed them this language from vince esposito and i said would you be supportive of us doing this with our extracurricular performing arts they said yes they would be supportive of that i said then if we were to start that and our board and everybody was supportive of it and it was successful we had no issues wouldn't it make sense that for the fourth quarter end of

024april to the end of the year we then move it to our our performing arts for all the curricular areas general music or band or chorus all of that would you be supportive of that move if if if we can show we can do it safely with these groups and they said they would agree to that i then asked all the superintendents in ontario county is this something do you all think you could support and get behind and everybody agreed that they would so um i really bring it to you and i'm curious about our board's input on this are you supportive of where the extracurriculars six feet in masks and starting to do and engage in these activities and monitor it if we see no issue for the fourth quarter then we would we

025would transition it to the curricular pieces of it as well um and so i wanted to share that that's brand new news that was really from this morning and um i know i gave you kind of a heads up so you had time to think about it i didn't want to catch you off guard but um i'm going to stop sharing my screen and allow genie to kind of take over the discussion aspect of it all i think well first i just want to say thank you for the advocacy um regardless of which way the board falls i think that you've done a phenomenal job of advocating for our students and greg i really look to you for great leadership in this too your passion for music is just phenomenal so thank you so much

026um i'll open it up for comments and questions no one jen you you knew i was gonna go first on this one i was sort of looking for you but i didn't see your hand come up maybe you were just sitting a little lower than usual tonight you know i'm working on getting taller and every day um so i am supportive of this i also think it makes sense from a point of equity if we can have kids doing sports and we have been able to do that successfully where those kids are within that six foot range and we haven't seen issues i think this makes a great step forward i want to reiterate how important i think masking is everywhere we can do it whether it's music or sports we need to do it

027as much as possible but i think the design here is fantastic and i have every confidence that greg will pull it off like he pulls off everything else totally agree any other milton i'm supportive of everything jen said and i think that makes sense just a question about ventilation i know in that small wrestling gym there's probably not the same ventilation as there is in the auditorium or in the performing arts facility but is is ventilation at all any concern at all with this six foot and that much exhalation so um yes we've we've i'm mike mclean if you can chime in we've increased our air circulation significantly um what percentage are we at right now mike uh 43 43 which is significantly higher than what's standard and a lot of that was driven by

028jen dr schneider's guidance and we test the air quality in fact they were in my office testing the air quality today and to turn good to know that it's good you know our windows are open uh deb and i are usually freezing because our windows are open but yeah we doing everything we can but to your point there's no windows in that auxiliary gym or in the auditorium but we do have our airflow turned way up mike anything else you want to add to that filters and things like that um yeah we're using the merv 8 filters which is really a pretty good filter and also that wrestling gym has some really good air quality in there there's four actual huge units in there and it was designed on purpose because of the wrestling and

029trying to keep the mats warm and uh just the whole airflow in that smaller space is really pretty decent so i think i'd be very comfortable with that space again if i can add one more uh that 40 is an ashrae recommendation so that actually goes beyond the governor's guidance thank you milton did you get your answer satisfied okay thank you cheryl i agree with everything with the music but i have a question about the other information that jamie presented jamie when you said that you know would take about six weeks roughly whatever so that means the last 10 weeks possibly kids would have a new teacher would parents be okay with that that's the difficulty you know uh i will say right now that no matter what we do people aren't going to be

030okay uh we're in an impossible situation exactly you know i think to say that nobody would have a change in their teacher would not be true we just we couldn't we wouldn't be able to do it uh there would be changes do i i don't even know a percentage i'm going to guess it would be 20 or less would see a change in or less it could be it could be seven or eight percent it really depends on how many select virtual and how many would select to be here full time but i can't imagine a situation or a scenario where there wouldn't be some instances where a teacher would have to change okay i just think that's difficult but it is what it is so i appreciate you looking into it other questions about

031anything that jamie presented or concerns i think i mean this goes without saying but i'm going to say it anyway because i know other people are listening the whole covet situation is a constant feedback loop so we will make a change like this and obviously we're going to continue to monitor it just like we monitor everything else and you know we're watching athletics closely they've been a great role model for this and following all of the roles and we know that's exactly what greg and all of the people in the music department are going to do because it matters so much that we get our kids back to this so we are going to do it right because it's really important too so thank you again for your advocacy do you want to add anything

032here greg you don't have to no i guess i'd just say thanks to jamie and to everybody and i'll speak a little bit more about that at the second uh board meeting of the month when we do a little music presentation but i i just believe with all my heart we can do it safely and making a transition like this benefits kids from kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade it's not just those kids at the high school but so thank you thank you uh i just like to add you know greg has been brilliant with his advocacy letter writing campaign he's just been so kind and complementary and made it clear that this is not about music versus sports this is you know he truly sees what sports is able to do as

033a victory and believes that his students in the performing arts also are deserving and so has just been masterful in the way he's advocated and interviewed and written letters and we've we've been in some zooms with some legislators and just so thankful for his leadership um and so uh thank you greg this is happening because of you and your your you know thoughtful approach and so he's also crafted a letter that would go out to any families of students who are in those extracurricular music programs and so that letter would go out if it sounds like people are supportive that letter would go out um this week to those families saying you know these are some things we'll be working towards and if you have any questions let him know we're not doing a permission

034slip concept you know we didn't for athletics this is an extracurricular piece so it's just informing them of the change of practice and if people want to participate they can now i will also say that he surveyed his students to see who might be interested in the sound you will not be shocked to know that this is the largest group he's ever had that wants to be in the sound they are just itching to perform and uh if they see this is their avenue to perform they are going to do it and uh jim and randy and marsha and everybody they were working on the stadium seating today and what that would look like and how we can have them there spread out at six feet and um allow two tickets per every sound member

035just like two tickets for every football player would have and so the parents could come and see their children perform and so kudos to everybody making this happen julianne did you have your hand up i just wanted to give greg and the music department a lot of credit for everything that they've been able to do in this situation so far and continue to engage kids and have music be such a bright spot in what's a really challenging year for so many of them and just say that i'm really excited that they're going to have this opportunity as we move forward into the spring it's really wonderful to see them get the chance to explore that passion and those talents that really make schools such a wonderful place for them so thank you for your work

036thanks julian it's going to be a win for kids for sure for sure all right anything else jamie okay great thank you uh let's see carlin hi um i'm good how are you there's not a lot to report on everything that i've said in the past meetings is still kind of the same working on the same things and um the whole music thing all the there's a lot of buzz about that right now and a lot of the kids are really excited about it so we're all really excited to see where that's gonna go so yeah nothing else though great thank you very much appreciate it uh let's see we have minutes up for approval i'll ask for motions please michelle and beth questions or comments all in favor opposed that cares unanimously deb and

037here we are on our budget presentation matt are you going to kick us off yeah we'll go ahead and i'll go ahead and get us started then jane will happen and um all these great principals and directors will will happen when we get to their portions um so you know it's been uh it's been a turbulent roller coaster here over the past year um with budget and i think for the next month you know what we present tonight um you know with the the tax cap and where we are might change dramatically um even over the next four or five weeks as we learn more from the state um as they adopt their budget and we learn more about this newest uh stimulus package um from the federal government so um you know jamie if

038you want to just go on to the next slide here so really tonight we're just going to go over the guidelines and establishing this year's budget questions and answers from our principals and directors need to thank them they do an incredible amount of work to um you know they're gonna show one slide with two numbers on it and a change um and they do incredible amount work um you know over multiple months to come up with these numbers and they really do they they you know from the department leaders um all the way up through their offices they do a really great job um and um you know they don't get a lot of credit for that so i just wanted to make sure that we recognize the amount of work they um they do

039in putting this this budget together and then um go over the tax levy cap calculation and where we are currently which as i said will probably change over the next month or so so board of education guidelines i won't read through all of these you've adopted these and created these here in december you know really you know the areas that you know i would focus on you know continue with our public road shows um you know our presentations to to the different community organizations um you know even whether it's on zoom or in person this year last year we did them all on zoom um making sure that even during these difficult tax cap cycles that we're you know making decisions on right sizing and what's best for students and program um and obviously this

040year you know also setting up a new capital reserve fund um we completely um used up the prior reserve capital reserve fund for the current capital project so building that up for um future work and then this year you know our strategies probably our our priority is always maintaining academic and extracurricular programming that's by far the most important thing uh making sure the students have all the opportunities um you know that they've had in prior years and then this year is a little bit different well a lot different in that we're really looking at our resources and you know we don't we we have some ideas of what uh needs our students will have when they return to us in full um hopefully sooner than later um you know and definitely by the beginning last

041year we beginning of next year we would hope um but really looking at what are those needs and trying to look at programs that we can um help students transition back into school full-time this is where i jump in a little bit i'm just going to talk about three slides quickly and it's really around staffing and then we'll hand it over to the directors and principals and [Music] department leaders that are here with us this evening but we have quite a few retirements we've talked about this before is a few hundred years worth of experience retiring from the district and that's always hard to replace as you know over the last three to four years we've done a lot of capitalizing on attrition and so when people retired did the numbers say that we maybe

042didn't have to replace them and in some instances because our enrollment was declining we didn't replace some folks uh and so we've done a lot of our our right sizing up until this point with this list here you'll see uh we do plan on re replacing all of these folks except for one which i'll talk about in a minute but our needs are driving that we we do need to replace all of them minus one and again i'll talk about that in just a second here there were some additional requests from the directors and principals and this is the list of those requests and i'll just go through them from the bottom up actually if they're bolded that means they are included in the budget you'll see tonight and they're included in the budget that

043we're working going forward but based on ieps and uh in needs we see a need for a 0.5 special education teacher at the academy to help cover some of the needs there and so that's a position that we've budgeted and it's something we do we believe is a need for our students there was a request to add a social worker at the academy and although we do see that as a need we do know that we have a strong mental support team a mental health support team and we are making some changes within that department to shift some resources up to the academy to help and so um you know we're in the process of communicating that with the folks that it impacts but we do see providing more mental health support social work type

044support at the academy with our existing staff to meet that need for the last i don't know two maybe three years we've had an unofficial dean of students at the academy we had a teacher that had a little bit of flexibility in their schedule and was working on their administrative degree and so was using a few periods as a dean of students to help kind of like we had done at the primary elementary school where they have a recognized dean of students that's been really successful and so um we'd like to see that recognized fully now it's it's a model that's in place and has been successful we don't know if that'll be a 1.0 or a 0.6 yet we're still working on the capacity that that person will be because the person that's in

045that role now is more like a 0.5 or 0.6 and it seems to be working and so we may keep it at that level of service but that is in the budget as either or a 0.6 or a 1.0 um at least my first year up until now they've asked for a 0.5 art teacher at the academy um and we love the arts here i don't think there's any question about that but the fact that we still really don't know long term what the budget will be like uh you know we number one hiring a point five art teacher is difficult retaining them is even more difficult as we've seen this year we've gone through three i think at the elementary school and so um maybe eventually that point five at the elementary school could

046become a 1.0 and shared between the buildings that's something on our radar and i know mrs logue likes that idea and it also provides access and perhaps um you know the cacc has wanted for a long time to have the art teacher come to them and so you know that's something that's important to us um but we unfortunately we can't do it all you know but the budgets are limited and we have to be thoughtful about it and so it'll continue to be on our radar um the middle school requested an additional math teacher uh they have it's a it's a funky building right now because they kind of have a weird bubble of students coming through and i'm talking class grade size uh and so you know that that building will um the student

047population will decrease but we have a large class that's kind of two large classes that are shifting through it right now that makes it difficult for staffing um but we also know if you know within the entire math department at the secondary level there is some flexibility and so mrs logan mr arthur will be working together within the math department to fill that need between the buildings uh and so we believe we can meet that need and we'll know more as we schedule and we'll be able to go from there the other tricky part is with the federal stimulus money you heard matt fitch mention it uh we do have federal stimulus money coming uh which is great but the worry is what happens when that money goes away if those of you who were

048in these roles or working in a district back in 809 when we had the fiscal cliff you know that federal monies helped districts out for two or three years in that time frame and then we hit a cliff where people were laying off all over the place because the state didn't pick up the difference when the federal monies went away and so we have to be cautious about it we have this concept of adding an implementation coach is what we're calling it at the primary elementary school so this past year in matt schrage feel free to chime in if you want to add anything but this past year we piloted uh some math curriculum at the primary elementary school and uh and and now the curriculum we've made a decision as as to which curriculum

049we'll be using moving forward and um and we have new science standards and new next gen science standards that we'll be implementing as well and so for the next year or two while the federal monies are here it would make sense as our teachers are learning this new curriculum and implementing in the classroom to have someone skilled and expertly trained on these two items the science standards and our science center as well as the math curriculum to be able to go into classrooms help teachers uh learn the curriculum and in a couple years down the road if the budget in in those federal dollars go away and we're in a difficult position hopefully it gave us a year or two to train staff and you know we can move away from the position i say

050that but i also say this has been a long time conversation uh to have a couple coaches maybe one that wasn't focused on language arts and one that's focused on social studies and the other one science and math or primary elementary school you know those are concepts that if the you know finance finances are are strong and we can build the capacity there could be benefit to it but it gives us the flexibility to say we've had it for a year or two people you know we should be more comfortable with the curriculum and we can move away from it if we have to if the budget forces us to and so that's the concept behind the implementation coach we were going to call it an instructional coach is what you normally would hear it

051but an instructional coach has a tone of a little more permanency than an implementation implementation coach might have and so down the road we could shift it to instructional coach and add one to take a look at the language arts and social studies or if the budget's tight we could then do away with them and realize the savings so it gives us like i said a little bit of flexibility that we're looking for but those are including in the budget so i said that there was one piece we wouldn't be replacing and that was uh one teaching assistant at the primary elementary school we had a teaching assistant in the science center um and so we won't be replacing that position that implementation coach that would be part of their duty to do that plus

052um the in-class curriculum so those are my pieces matt did i miss anything there that you wanted to add to that there's a big big no i see from him okay no you got it all right thank you nash rocky sorry you're good i just wasn't sure which mat you were referring to i wasn't i was looking at you mashed rocky you couldn't tell was looking at you kidding okay so i'm going to turn it now over to the principal's directors and department chairs um we have mrs logue up first our brand new principal we put her first wow that was kind of rough but she'll do great no doubt about it this is low gear up okay hi everybody um just want to talk a little bit about the budget for the academy next

053year as you can see it has decreased a little bit is nine percent below from what it was last year and i can honestly say that that is largely because many of the supplies and things that are needed in each of the departments we did we haven't really used as much as we normally do so we have a this year plus the spring of last year where a bunch of stuff didn't get used so you know i asked the cults to be really thoughtful about going through what we already have and you know just getting what we need and you know using stuff that we already have in our stock and just refilling that way we do have a couple of increases on some furniture pieces um at the academy replacing some of those high

054top tables and stools and the text tech classrooms um some of the special tables in the world language classrooms so they can move around more because hopefully we'll be moving around more soon and also replacing some of the furniture in our faculty lounge which looks like a cat has scratched all over it so we need to work on that a little bit so um those are some of the highlights and we are we did build the budget as if hopefully we'll be able to do some of the trips again like we did in years past and all those are are included in our budget too so overall a little bit of a dip in the budget but still looking good thank you marissa i appreciate it and we'll do questions at the end so if

055you have questions you just jot them down and we can it's a little bit more smooth to do it that way uh up next is john arthur with the middle school hi everybody thanks for letting me us come explain this to you um so there's a pretty big difference at the middle school 13 uh it's not a competition marissa but if it was i'd be ahead of you but anyway um so a lot of what marissa said there's there's still supplies left over but also um we've reduced some teacher expenses for professional development they're not going to go they're not planning on going places that was a pretty big chunk there's um a few thousand there and and the last few years we have not spent all of our um our textbook money and in

056conversation with matt fitch we can use textbook money to buy library money library books so we're doing a little bit of a change in our budget um we're gonna plan to allocate textbook money for library books and that's a considerable difference of about ten thousand dollars that comes out of the general fund and will go into the textbook categorical aid fund and we don't believe that we'll have any problem covering that um that could change from year to year but um better get library books aided and coming out of general funds so thank you great job john thank you primary elementary uh heidi and brian are you doing these together yeah i'm going to start us off you can see that ours did go up a little bit this year and there's really a couple

057of reasons for that the first being many of the supplies it sounds like at the academy and middle school might be left over whereas much of our supplies were sent home with students during the closure whether it be some manipulatives that students could use and some different supplies and we need to replenish those many of those things did not come back or they were used by our students which is really great and they they need that hands-on learning so we were happy to do that but we do have more in in some of those supplies to make sure that our students have the supplies for next year and one other increase that you'll see is uh in the area of furniture and equipment so the last couple of years we've had a dip in the

058area of furniture and equip and equipment and now that the staff and teachers are becoming more aware of what the capital project is bringing on we're looking to start replacing more classroom furniture and updating some of the furniture that's around if you if you look around the school you'll see that there is quite a few uh furniture pieces that do need to be updated and replaced and so now that we have this capital project on the horizon we're hoping to get ourselves onto a schedule where every year we're looking at three to four classrooms and starting to really look at the furniture items that need to be replaced so at this time i'm going to turn it over to stephanie i believe for special programs yes thanks steph do you have so before i do

059that just looking at this picture of mrs bates just reminds me how amazing our staff is our they've just been so fantastic this year and my um true gratitude and thanks and heart goes out to them for all their efforts this picture just reminds me of that so sorry it's clearly pajama day in that picture too which only makes it cute thank you so um one major area of um decrease that we have in this area of special programs is travel expenses so we don't really need to go to wayne education center or other locations for our cse meetings because we found great efficiencies in using zoom or other platforms for families to engage in our cse processes so you see a large decrease in our travel expenses in our budget for special programs however

060we did account for some increases in the area of other public school placements and again what does that mean it really is the amount of money that the office of special programs pays out for students who are in mental health facilities and receiving their education through rochester city school district or other public school districts so an increase in that is accounted for for next school year great job steph and this is always one of the most challenging departments to budget for because all it would take is you know one or two new families to move in and and that number could go up uh drastically and so we really appreciate all your efforts and um foresight trying to plan and project nice job music mr kane okay hi everyone um as you can see we

061are projecting a decrease in our budget for next school year and there's really two or three areas that are driving that change one with a lot of the reduced expenses that you could imagine with this school year and students not being involved in certain things we were able to sort of pay it forward a little bit and purchase some of the things um for next school year such as instruments so the the largest decrease in our proposed budget for next year would be our equipment line and with that in mind we anticipate with our expected enrollment in certain areas we've we've done a great job of preparing for what our students need in the last few years and they're going to be set with instruments the other small change would be in our membership and

062dues category and that is the stuff that funds students state evaluation state evaluations and solo festivals we anticipate we're we're not going to have the same expenses there as well next year great job greg thank you very much mr srabby thank you mr farr good evening everyone if you're taking a look at our budget you can see a much larger increase than we might typically have the office of instructions budget but it's attributed to four key areas many of which are proactive responses to what we're anticipating student needs to be as jamie referenced as part of the staffing component we are anticipating the selection of a new math program at the upk 5 level which accompanying that implementation we're trying to allocate for what we're anticipating is at least two days of training for all

063staff members in order to be acclimated to the program and be able to implement it next year which is a pretty sizable expense uh in addition we're looking to try to provide more uh training in the area of reading to a wide variety of staff again trying to anticipate that there might be some needs for students next year and trying to be proactive with providing additional training for our staff in that area in addition we're also looking to increase the number of teachers that will be participating in our summer program at ubk five um and again that's going to be in response to what we're anticipating is some of the needs and the gaps from uh the resulting uh you know impact of coveton this current school year uh and a similar cost in that

064same area is providing teachers time again this summer uh if you recall last summer we allocated time to teachers to really do what we kind of deemed curriculum recovery in which they took a look at curriculum uh in order to make adjustments for the upcoming school year based on what they may have been able to or perhaps we're not able to cover in nothing so giving teachers that time to plan in advance of next school year again is a pretty sizable expense but it's those four key areas contributing to the you know the 18.9 percent increase in the office of construction budget this year thank you mr schrocky and as i look at this picture i'm thankful for pro cutters landscape for um donating our outdoor seating which hopefully will be getting used real soon

065maybe even this wednesday and thursday because it's going to be beautiful but again showing our teachers flexibility mr simmons hi everybody not much change in the athletic budget there are three codes that are impacted and changed just a little bit we do have a need for some new soccer goals a couple sets there and in addition we have some football helmets a number of them that have reached their 10-year shelf life so they need to be replaced so the small increase in the equipment code on the other end of that we have a reduction in supplies many of our spring coaches i spoke with they didn't have a spring season so they were able to use those supplies moving forward so there's a reduction almost the same there and a very minor increase uh in

066our officials uh because of the contracts they get minor increases um each year so ended up just a small increase but very similar to last year thanks to a great great job and here's our uh sectional champion ski team and i believe i'm hearing the girls basketball team is up big at halftime right now right mr simmons all right i gotta go in here in my office awesome mr bowman all right as far as technology um this has been a very interesting year um to uh budget for actually you know because covet hit and there was a lot more uh needs for technology obviously um that we didn't anticipate so some of that stuff is really not going to go away um at least perceivable for next uh the start of next school year so

067we sort of have to prepare for some of those things so really that's the major pieces of this change um one when you when you look at the technology budget one thing that you're going to notice like just a big shift is that we we've went into the instructional boces coaster which allows us to get state aid on um chromebooks and desktops and network equipment and things that we haven't been able to get aid on in the past so therefore we were able to shift about a million dollars of the budget into that boces um budget so that then we can get the 58 aid uh back on that million dollars uh the following year so that that's sort of a change that you'll see it's not much of a budget change but it's a

068it's a budget it just shifted into a different budget line most of the increases the things that actually uh made a difference to make the that increase um possible is that by going into that boces support um or instructional coaster there's actually base fees that boces charges um just to get into that so then you can when you spend money on those pieces and parts you get the aid back but to get that base fee there's a 33 thousand dollar base fee just to get into that coaster so that's something that we have to absorb into the budget that we didn't normally have and this is the first year that we've uh been into that coaster again agitech services always go up there's a 1.79 percent increase on all of their services across the board

069um this year the other two big things that came up this year because of kovid we're up to about 95 hot spots at this point to support our families for internet access at home i know that i reported earlier in the year um you know that we were at about uh 50 or so we've almost doubled that since then for families in need and so that's about a thirty six thousand dollar service charge for those hot spots and obviously that'll have to continue for next year at least for the first part of the year um so that we're prepared for whatever comes our way and then also zoom um zoom's a part of our life at this point um and you know we see that the need is definitely gonna be there uh at least

070for the first part of the year uh so there's a ten thousand dollar charge for our zoom licenses that we all use and love near and dear to our heart you know so um those are the major things that contributed to the changes in the technology thanks dan there's a handful of uh stars of this closure dan bowman and his team second to none they're fantastic could you even imagine navigating what we've had to navigate this last year without their skilled expertise thank you dan really do appreciate it it's just remarkable mr mclean building some grounds hi everybody um we had a slight increase the increase was due to some needed equipment for the department and the increased cost of that equipment and then our required inspection yearly inspections um those costs went up this

071year and that was that was it for the actual increases thanks mike and this team has been very busy i can't wait to have you all back on campus to show you all the things they've done around around our campus it's remarkable uh mr claremont transportation yes thank you good mor good afternoon every evening sorry um as you can see there's uh we're not doing any change to transportation this year of course everything switches from one side to another and we'll try to do a normal year and see how we actually pan out but uh we're not looking for any changes this year and hopefully fuel prices won't go up too much like we're noticing that they are at this time yeah that's something to watch closely at our fuel prices so thank you mr

072clairman and uh really your whole department they've been very flexible this year trying to make everything go and i think back over to matt pitch now yeah thank you um so yeah we just wanted to go through first that you know thanks again to the directors and principals um you know you see a lot of areas where we're decreasing really looking into you know you know a closure for three months last year and being hybrid this year and really reflecting on the needs um you know going forward um so looking in the you know where we currently are and then the next slide in the future so our current uh tax levy is 47 million five hundred thousand dollars um and going into this year we had a 2.9 percent tax levy increase which was

073also the tax cap was 2.19 percent at this time last year we projected a tax rate of 19.18 per thousand dollars of assessed value and as you recall we use prior year's assessed value to come up with this number so it's a very conservative number at this time of year it's going to be higher than what it'll actually be the actual rate came in for this year 18.93 which was a 16 cent increase from 2019 20. and then this is just uh you know i'm not really looking for you know in prior years we've said you know asked you know where's the board sort of comfortable i think these numbers are going to change quite a bit over here you know over the next couple weeks um you know and we'll present the full budget

074the first draft here uh in two weeks but each percentage increase in the tax levy is about 475 000 so i just wanted to show you know at this point um you know one percent levy increase um where we currently are would require about 2 million 2 million 20 000 an appropriate reserves and fund balances um a two percent levy increase we always want to show the two percent because you know we have the two percent tax cap um of one million five hundred forty five thousand dollars in appropriate fund balance um which would be a tax rate of 19.31 and then our tax cap this year is 2.07 percent this is the lowest it's been in quite some time we continue to see this trending lower um as the cpi continues to stay lower

075the cpi this year is 1.23 and that's the main factor in that tax levy uh calculation um so you know again appropriate reserves and fund balance of just over one million five hundred thousand dollars which is nineteen dollars and thirty two cents per thousand again that's a conservative number that rate uh we would expect that to go down as uh assessments increase and equalization rates um change over to the following year um just to give you some context currently we're just under 1.9 million dollars in appropriate reserves and fund balance so the two percent and 2.07 percent would actually be um you know a lower appropriation than we're currently at um and a one percent increase would be slightly higher and if i'm not mistaken that's it mr pitch correct that's correct so mr pitch

076has complimented our directors and our department leaders and our principals but i'd like to also talk to mr pitch this is a fantastic amount of work uh and a lot of times it changes the minute you put it on paper and so uh really appreciative of his expertise and leadership in building our budget i will stop sharing our screen and turn it back over to genie but thank you mr pitch and thank you all of our principals directors and department leaders fantastic yeah i'll say the same thing that's so much work that goes into it it's a short presentation um and to the public eye i think it looks like the budget season is a really short season and in fact we know that you're working on it all year long um and in past

077years we've had the joy of seeing all of the everything that's reaped from the what goes into the budget and all the work that everyone does and it's been hard to be separated from it this year um but it's you know still a superb presentation with lots of information that we can process and comment on now so i'll open it up to the board to see if there are questions or comments nothing okay all right so the last thing i'll say that isn't so much budget related but sort of is that the digest issue is coming out pretty soon um and this year we chose for the focus to be on all of these really wonderful things that go on in our schools because i think there's a little bit of memory lapse around it

078when people aren't as involved in schools you know this time of year typically people are at shows and games and productions and concerts and spelling bees and community members who aren't in the schools all the time feel really connected and we were a little concerned we were losing that and of course the primary focus of our meetings is grafts and covet and numbers and concerns so the digest is going to be a highlight of really fantastic things that go on in our schools and at home because of our schools um so thank you to all of the cults who provided us with the information that we needed to be able to put out a really great digest so looking forward to having that hit everybody's mailboxes um if you don't have anything else jamie are

079we dismissing all principals and directors yeah they work long days so if we could that'd be great yep thank you so much for your time it was really nice to see everybody's faces tonight bye-bye that's an awesome crew really great we're blessed we really are for sure let's see moving on through our agenda we have a consensus agenda and supplemental loss for emotions please cheryl and jen questions or comments all in favor that carries unanimously deb and we have a nomination oj sailor is willing to run for the wayne finger lakes boces board again i'm really grateful to her for her desire to continue to serve beth that's emotion i take it okay and milton questions or comments all in favor okay that carries unanimously too with thanks to oj uh and let's see we

080have policy beth so a pretty easy one we have a new required policy number 2130 this is a first reading for gender gender neutral bathrooms um it it came to us this way we really didn't tweak it much it's required um so i hope you all like it um and then the um there's two policies in there that you'll see non-substantive changes deb is working really hard thank you so much i mean it's it's honestly like trying to organize spaghetti um cook spaghetti um to make sure that we always use the right numbers and we always use the right dots and we always um underline the things and capitalize the things and that's the kind of stuff that you see with the non-substantive every once in a while there's a word i think this time

081we caught one word that she couldn't search for it because it was spelled three different ways so we fixed the spelling of it we picked the one that was actually correct um but that's about that's really about it always fun great thank you beth yep sight i try to remember i don't believe we've met since we talked about the middle school brian's not here to double check with what jamie might remember the last i recall our meeting we talked about now that we're going to do some more work at the middle school there's going to be a meeting coming up i believe it's next week with some stakeholders at the middle school to address colors hall designs similar we're doing at the primary elementary refurbishing of those walls where the original building had the glass

082at the top of the classrooms facing the hallways so that'll all come out there'll be complete finish walls new or refurbed lockers larger lockers for some areas and that whole area will get a complete refreshing the original building that was the first two squares of that building with those remember i believe that's all we have talked about is there anything else jamie you remember i think wasn't there heat on that one hallway that's unheated presently i didn't know we had a hallway but no heat but yeah it's too it's we do have some um spaces that they don't have heat that we would add to it as well so really a lot of the work that we thought we'd have to be doing in the second the next capital project would be focused at the

083middle school we can get probably half of it done if our projections play out and take care of a whole loop um of the wall finishes of the glass display and there were some rooms with heating issues thank you john uh let's well john stay on um safety please i didn't make that meeting um i was i didn't i didn't make it on on last thursday so i don't looking at the minutes i don't recall there being anything big but i didn't pull them up before the meeting okay jamie did you have anything from that or a week i wasn't at that meeting either i typically don't attend those but nothing nothing of substance that i saw okay uh julianne dei please um we've had a smaller advisory group meeting regularly on dei the whole

084committee was or task force was close to 50 people which makes it difficult to do significant work on a zoom meeting with 50 people so we've got a smaller advisory group established that's been working on creating sort of the structure of a plan we're calling the whole group together again next week to flush out various components of the dei work that we're identifying as being important for us moving forward and eventually that will come back to the board but it's been really wonderful to see the passion that people are bringing to it and the amount of work that people are doing outside the meetings as well to really learn about what different districts are doing what resources are out there and how we can focus our work to have the greatest impact for students and

085for our community awesome thank you uh and let's see finally copen 19 jen did you all meet we do we meet every single friday afternoon um our meetings uh have been pretty rote uh regularly uh the only thing to really add other than what you heard from jamie was we've been talking about the emergence of the variants and the amount of people getting vaccine and hoping that the vaccinations win that race a little bit um we also talked a little bit about some of the changing ventilation standards that um we're already seeing coming out of the consensus groups for down the road um for buildings and that sort of thing great thank you milton i was going to ask this earlier regarding jamie's numbers but since jen brought it up i was curious does the

086do we see an uptick on mondays and tuesdays following a weekend assuming that with travel ban or with travel guidance still including a a required quarantine do we see that as an effect i mean i know there are there are travel teams that still may be playing a season so is that part of the reason why we're seeing some of these uptakes on mondays and tuesdays or or is that not it no we so here in our school district we're seeing upticks after uh february break a holiday break a week-long break a weekend we don't we don't seem to see that at this point in fact our numbers from friday to monday went down pretty significantly so um you know people have been pretty good about not traveling for athletics right now a lot of

087that has been shut down there are instances where people do but it's not happening anywhere near what it was back in the fall it's really falling off to your point though i do anticipate it picking back up with the numbers being favorable and the weather's starting to break uh i won't be surprised if we see that jump again so we need to keep an eye on it is it necessary to again the guidance is to quarantine do we so we don't differentiate between when a student calls in and says hey i was at a college visit versus saying uh you're quarantined because of a potential yeah so we have to look at the travel guidance and if if their travel leads them to having to quarantine then they have to quarantine the bigger issue we're

088encountering is um people traveling and not letting not selling anybody and then just coming back and i don't know how you get get around just kind of that that integrity piece that honesty piece um looking out for our neighbors and taking care of others the people who travel and call us they're fantastic they give us the details they take a test before they return to new york they take the test on day four they submit those plus the travel form okay you're good to come back and some people i'm guessing most of the people have been great the ones i've interacted with they've been great they want to do it right but then we do hear of others through the rumor mill that traveled and didn't tell anybody and then later on maybe there's a

089quarantine that occurs as a result and i i just again i don't know what the answer to that is i just wish people would make that hard decision and do the right thing any other questions or comments beth i just have to put in a plug for county is again offering the it's under the diversity equity and inclusion it's about explicit and implicit bias from two presenters from the lower hudson valley um i i've heard them speak my understanding is the presentation is going to be very similar um the beauty is they were done like they held they had an hour they held to an hour um they were very clear it was just a great presentation it's next tuesday night it's by zoom um anybody that would like to participate you will not be

090disappointed deb will you send something out about that would you be able to do that please great thank you thanks beth michelle we did have an audit committee meeting friday morning but matt stole all of the thunder for the meeting so there really isn't much to add so thanks matt for that was helpful thank you for the reminder too uh is that it then all right jamie any last words from you hope everybody has a great night and enjoys the warm weather great keep up the good work everybody thank you i'll ask your motion to adjourn i got beth and milton i don't know if i think your hands are up okay goodnight everybody
