001foreign because Okay so hi everyone and thank you to our crew that came out um I know that the board usually likes to hear from the kids more than us uh so we just try to involve them as much as possible um the main thing that we focused on in the beginning of the year before so far is student engagement and connections uh last year we did a club fair and it got really good positive responses but it was a little bit later in the year so this year we wanted to do it a little bit early and we did we were able to do so we were able to get a lot of kids involved um so you know okay so at the club in total just so that you know we have over
00230 clubs um I always joke because every year there's a new club and the kids bring me all of their forms and signed petitions everything that they want and they pitch it and we basically then come and say can I have Carrie can I run another club look at all this stuff with these kids that broke me and over the past few years we have run a new club every year and it is completely student driven so the club fair in my mind the kids are excited to present uh we the advisors help organize uh set it up but the kids really are the ones that run the the tables they set them up I have some pictures up here so that you can see but it's really a great event and because I don't
003want to talk about it too much I have Molly here she's going to talk about it um but I'll just show you a couple of the pictures so um we had it at the beginning of October now one of the things we have we have so many honor societies which is amazing we have nine honor societies uh not every school has those so what we do for the club fair is just to kind of give everybody an idea you do have to be eligible to get in so we have one table set up with all of the different pieces of information like kind of like a brochure for each one so everybody understands how it is that you get into these so it's something to Aspire to for the younger kids and it just kind
004of is a little bit more of like an informational table whereas the other ones you're trying to get kids to sign up and be involved um at robotics so I threw a couple more pictures and the robotics one because they just had them have Hollow Hills event uh they're doing a really great job they have about 30 kids involved which is great but also at the at the club Fair um they were set up and it was launching balls and things like that so it was it was a full event um which I love to see the kids want to see I just have to make sure that the walls were staying in the one area of the gym um our band we have a lot of extracurricular music uh so sometimes it's hard to
005have them set up as different tables so we just kind of put them all in one section and we have a lot of different things for our students who participated we even now I know some of us know very well we even have a group of kids who have created their own band and they come and perform at our events which is amazing yeah it is it is I mean I you know I could throw a ton of pictures on here I didn't want to go too much um so this is kind of the setup of the day we have table set up the kids run them they made the pictures they make the this is our newest Club CM Studios so this was one that they actually created a video so they want to
006be it's a film they created a whole movie and it only was approved the week before the club Fair but they were on overdrive to make sure that they had a table that once they found out they had a table they were very excited to be able to station there and they had a whole setup um they actually made a video beforehand was showing Advanced QR code they did you know the whole nine so I'm just I'm really proud of the kids um so again I'm just gonna go through a little bit uh our diversity and inclusivity Club had kind of an interactive table so some of the kids would write inspirational things on the butterflies and then what that club did uh is there is a bulletin board outside the guidance office and so
007now those things that kids have written are up in the hallways now so that's something that you know came from the event weight room Club always gets did you get up there Molly oh no you didn't get up there all right I didn't get up there either but we did have a lot of kids involved um our friends and buddies our future teachers game on this is a newer Club game on and they are playing games the amount of games that they had set up here right it was very impressive and and entertaining it definitely gave kids a lot of things to do and they were able to grow a club that just started and it's already become such a interactive there's a lot of kids that are going to the uh the meetings after
008school so it's very it's very cool do you want to call Molly and give them the student perspective of why this is a good thing that we've done yeah this is Mom hi you're right there you're good you got it you got it I really like this upstairs because I met a lot of people who are definitely was there kids like above above my grade below my grade a lot of new freshmen to sign up for clubs that we can carry them and the clubs don't really got a lot of recognition outside there so it's a good way to start doing things I already got involved we did a bunch of cleanups for Ecology and we have a bunch of meetings after school all and even days and you can't just Join one club because
009kids would simulate interests tend to like join a bunch of them so then you make a bunch of friends enjoy really something fun to do and you get to see certificates that's true when I was talking to Mommy about it she said that she had about a page and a half of kids that signed up right and in the past I've always been a science club doesn't always get no a page and a half I don't know why it was good yeah and I think what's great too is they didn't just sign the paper they then went to the meeting and then they had it cleaned up so they were out in the community doing something with these kids that they just met at the club fair and I believe you already got them into
010other clubs yeah right okay look at this one over here this one's pulled up yeah all right well thanks [Applause] so Katie Foreman the assistant principal is going to talk about brunch so there's basically three parts to our student recognition one is the club Fair which mine did a great job of kind of giving the student perspective we're going to talk about branch and then we'll talk about the turkey track and basically all of it is about getting kids involved and connected and as active as possible okay all right so Roger B started the week after in the hunt week um we did that strategically we pushed into psychology classes and talked about how mental health and exercise went hand in hand and then I I this is something that I've done in the past
011in my previous District but I knew that I wanted to bring it here because I've never seen such a supportive group of people and besides that Jared Governor is using this and he is amazing um he really this is also something that he's passionate about he has a training history during covert he did amazing things to help the mental health of athletes within his own facility so I knew that he was going to take this and run with it and need it so I'm gonna have him come up and explain a little bit before I just have some pictures yep all right uh hello everybody my name is Jack volcker for those of you who don't know me already um so like this forum was saying what she has done in the past with this
012brunch program at her previous school she wanted to bring into Sam Bridges so when she was talking to this about me um talking about this program with me I thought you know it's a great idea for us to implement right away here at Seven Bridges as well um because you know when we think about when we think about movement right we see movement everywhere movement in our brains um moving when we're walking or just doing things but when kids are just sitting down not doing anything or not moving how that really affects our body and our mind of our spirit so the whole I guess the whole part of this program is to get kids out of their seat and just move around and I think what's really funny uh coincidentally not from just my
013own classroom but from you know other uh kids speaking to me and everything their number one complaint so far this year is their lack of movement which I thought was I was not expecting that answer so you know the we've had this for what about a month now right and you know the kids as soon as they see me walking to the lunchroom like all right it's time to go outside it's time to move around um so the you know the research is there how benefits our mind and the benefits our physical health as well um and you know the the kids like I said they really look forward to you know just getting outside getting a big um you know big um the fresh air that's what I'm trying to say in fresh air
014uh some sunlight and you know just getting up out of their seats so that's great we have um you know also we're trying to um change some of the things that are going on right so we have a lot of different students that want to maybe do laps in the hall right which can obviously be a disruption to the you know academic time so we thought that this would be ideal for those students that do need to move right where they're maybe they're in study below one or two periods you know too long for them um so this allows them to get up and then we can show them the connection and be able to discuss it with them and how it can really help their behavior and their focus for their their next classes
015so it gives us that opportunity to connect and also explain the benefits for them personally yeah and I I think to just to touch on that the the big philosophy that we're trying to preach is move into medicine so when when I first initially went into the lunchroom I really wanted to see the kids who were maybe you know sitting by themselves or they're just really attached to the phone and I think it's a good way for me personally to even connect with those students because maybe you know they're they're sitting alone because maybe they just don't have anybody else to sit with so um I felt it was important for me to swoop in there right away just to bring that kid outside and then you know I got to created a special connection
016with some of those students and you can start to see how like even when I pass them in the hallway we you know we we try to give each other high fives just say hello and everything um and it kind of It kind of helps them just to grow out of their share a little bit and maybe kind of do things that they're not really comfortable doing so I mean there's kind of a ton of benefits just you know from just connecting with kids getting them to move around and kind of just adopting that mindset of moving semester so yeah thank you [Applause] you also have been using it in classes like I said in Psychology that once week they've been joining us so that's the future on the left um we did start it
017as far as restorative practices as well so different students that might have goals where we're trying to keep them on a straight narrow path where they were able to join us and it was started I want to say about the second week of school and we've seen really a great response and then both academically and behaviorally and where they're now able to help other students and be peer Educators in that sense and you're gonna have the girls come up this is Sophie and Gabby and they're going to talk about our first event which is going to be Friday um we had a group of children that were trained upstanders training about a few weeks ago right yeah um we took the boys lacrosse team the girls lacrosse team and the peer education classes and the
018reason we did that is ultimately they will be working with the Riptide team in the future so um they they received training on different techniques with peer education so this was their first um you know event that they are going to be working towards so they went into classes this week to talk about their Turkey Trot event and they're also going to be helping on a whole different level where they were able to work with our partner which is City Bill running club and they are working with setup and um you know to promote community and also assist local shelters on the island so they're just going to talk about different things that they did right now yeah so we first started off uh we did like it was a whole day training and we
019got trained by these like professionals and they talked about a bunch of stuff it was like anti-vaping prevention like um it was like kind of kind of like peer pressure your friends into doing like good things kind of like the Turkey Trot like it's because it's like kind of a good peer pressure yeah mental health awareness we kind of also can play this game where we learned a little bit like about like everyone's backstory it's called like cross the line and it was good to just kind of like know that like you're not really like alone like everyone's kind of going through something on their own Club work because there's a lot of things yeah and then we went into the classrooms and basically told them like about the Turkey Trot like what it is
020how it helps like families and it helps families because just by you participating it helps like people who aren't able to afford turkey dinners like dinners on Thanksgiving which is like a really good thing to do and um we also be kind of pressured them in a good way to sign up and sign up and to do it and we got you said 261 right yeah 261 people signed up so far and this is happening Friday November 18th thank you I can tell you girls that you're here before I left and had a profession at my house and they were talking about doing it myself so what you're doing is working thank you because there's there seems to be a lot of excitement when the early discussion about it and what I think is the
021best thing like if you look at all of this it's so student-led and student driven uh you know Miss Borman and I and some other teachers could have pushed into classrooms and given a talk about the turkey trap but I don't think we would have gotten 261 so I'm proud of you guys for taking a risk because you have to go into classes and be like teacher right and talk to kids and it's not always easy so maybe you give your teachers a little bit more like I mean you guys are gonna give your teachers a little bit more respect but um I just think that our kids going in there and doing this themselves and then us kind of like following their lead it is awesome so I'm very excited for Friday I'm very
022proud of you guys for doing that and I'm very thankful for you know everybody involved even with the brunch stuff you know Mr Baltimore is leaving it but when he makes that connection with a kid that kid is making connections with other kids also so it's really bringing everyone together for like positive things so thank you to every High School person here thank you for coming in and getting to brag about us a little bit because we like to make sure the Board of Ed really does support us and so many things that we want to make sure that they know what it is that's going on even though they hear about it at the dinner table we want to make sure that everybody everybody knows even if it's not going on here all right
023thank you guys this is so impressive things wonderful connections that are being made in studio stuff these are this is the best part about what we do so thank you so much for coming back we're gonna end me now we have a good stuff right um but thank you so much yeah that's great you guys it's it's awesome to see the things that I'm sure that we're going to provide an opportunity to connect to the school and feel like they're valuable part of something these kinds of activities extension for that and we love hearing Focus too so thank you appreciated so we're going we're going to transition now to a presentation by Ms Lockwood which is get ready um for our long-term Financial Planning District now but if you want to choose to go this
024is peer pressure some people at 10 30. so we're going to go over um our long-term financial plan we do do this every year so this is just kind of an update um from now that we've closed our books out last meeting we presented on our Reserve plan which the board is set to adopt this evening so today is long-term financial plan which again is one of the board's goals um so we're kind of you know slowly getting through each of the goals that they have set for the district um financially and uh you know it really is to just kind of talk about the physical health of the district and where are we going and what does it look like and really just the start of some conversations around our finances we're working on
025a lot of great programming and can we sustain those things and you know how are we managing those things um so you know a long-term financial plan just allows us to plan for the future provides the physical stability um the controller is really recommending districts start doing these more and more and then become an adopted plan by the board so we will have a full um document that will be shared with the board it's almost complete um it's it's about 15 pages long uh that really goes into depth about what the long-range financial plan is and once it's adopted it will be posted online for the community to read as well and kind of just really to get involved on the the budgetary and the physical side of the district um as that's how we
026are able to do a lot of these things is to make sure we still have that Revenue coming in so we can support the good things for the students um it provides for transparency for the community as well so you know where your tax dollars are going we receive a lot of most of our revenues from our taxpayers so it's just good for the community to understand uh how that money is being spent and what's happening so this is just a quick overview of the revenue Mrs current year going back as well so that the years at the bottom is the year end so we work over two fiscal years so 22-23 um is that last column there and it's just showing that most of our Revenue as you can see the 65 in the
027pie chart is global Revenue that is our taxpayers and then about 34 is coming from the state so we rely heavily on our taxpayers as well as some tuition payments that we receive from local districts uh really to keep our programs running this year and uh last year this year next year we're getting Foundation Aid which is a larger influences payday that we'll be getting and we anticipate that coming forward the formula is running and we'll we'll start seeing that money's uh run properly based on our student population so we should start seeing the state aid start increasing which will help offset some of the taxpayers uh contribution to the district on the expenditure side um most of our money as as anticipated is to salaries and benefits um all of our teaching staff our
028power professionals our buildings and grounds you know it does it takes a lot of people to run a large operation so uh most of our our expenditures are over there onto that side of things so our four-year Financial forecast a lot of people say to a five-year I don't like five years I like four because the further you get out the least accurate less accuracy you have in your projections um so I always do a four year projection we have a year and a half left of Federal Savings money we got cursive money Arco money cares act money um during covet a lot of federal funding came in and we're doing really great things with that funding it was a lot of money but that program is going to run and we're not going to
029get that money any longer so we're looking at what are we keeping in place as a result of that money and what how are we going to pay for those things so we've we've put some different learning supports in places of teachers to help our students get through the effects of the pandemic and we're reevaluating do we need to continue those things are are they working and if not maybe we're changing some of it so we're constantly evaluating the federal spending but now we're looking at it how is that impacting us um you'll start hearing more and more especially through budget processes not just here in our district but around the state there's a potential fiscal cliff coming as a result of these federal funds going away um so we need to look at that
030and manage it closely and you know that comes into this plan and we have plans in place to prevent that Cliff for our district um as I mentioned before the foundation Aid we were we're getting fully reinstated Foundation it's been frozen for many years as a result of that again a large influence of funds coming through which will allow to stabilize so we have to manage those funds appropriately and and figure out what's going to happen in the future are they going to change the formula and how that is working um yet to be seen we are we know inflation is up significantly and that affects the formula so we don't have the exact numbers of how that's going to impact what our foundation is foundation Aid is going to be so you know we're
031working through a lot of those things and having those conversations um with our colleagues to try to understand what it's best for us so we're you know just kind of preparing going forward um and just you know a little note to the side these are unaudited numbers there are projections things change these plans have changed constantly we will uh Dr masara and I review these things continuously and we'll make modifications as information is received so this is just a quick forecast of Revenue going out to the 2028 school year and what this is the assumptions that are made in here is that our tax levy maximum would be two and a half percent and our levies uh fluctuate each year um to show that and that's because there's a formula it's based on CPI it's
032based on our growth within our our community and our taxpayers um it's based on our Capital expenditures that we might have it's building a that's coming in or falling off of books so there's a lot that goes into that formula so our number could be as low as one percent it could be as high as five or six percent the assumptions we did was let's hold it steady at 2.5 or lower depending on what the um the maximum was so that is going forward and then we also assume the two percent increase in Formula based days which would also include the foundation Aid but again with the caveat that we are waiting for finance the stating numbers for this year to be released uh we expect that any day now and um once we have
033that we'll have a better idea of what inflation is doing to state aid and then I'll be able to work with uh some of my counterparts to start projecting that out so we do anticipate our foundation date number to change which will also change how our Revenue slides look a little later on in this presentation um we are seeing a slight decrease in enrollment in our Easter students that come here in ninth grade um and a lot of that is also their enrollment across the state is declining so um as we're graduating those larger classes out the incoming is not all it's not 100 enough offset um so we're monitoring that and we also are seeing a little bit of a decrease in our special education tuition enrollment uh we have a lot of districts
034that pay to have their students educated here in our program but we are seeing as a result of the pandemic a lot of students are needing a little bit more services that maybe we can't provide or they're graduating out the programs um and we're seeing that here internally as well um it's just our the children's needs have changed um but we're constantly looking at that as well so those are some of the assumptions on the revenue side on the expenditures we adjust the salaries based on architectural obligations our we have a CBF contract for all of our employees before the CBA that's negotiated and our teachers are expected to be negotiated again in 2024 so that will have an impact on this um but really the assumption is as we kind of continue at the
035same Trend we're at with their current contract in order to go forward and we don't assume any retirements in these projections and it is a very conservative projection our ERS contribution rate and TRS contribution rates we don't know those going forward but what we do is we look at Trends we look at what has happened over the past five or six years and we also know that the uh the covid pandemic has had an impact on that because those numbers and those contributions are based on the um stock market and the their Investments that they do there so we do start seeing some Trends in the rates as a result of that um our benefits as a whole we have an assumption just about seven percent increase in benefits um we've been very consistent with
036health insurance being about a two percent increase in premium maybe a little less however last year was a 12 increase we don't have numbers yet for this coming January and again as a result of the pandemic the medical side is taking either hit so now they're trying to you know make up for some lost revenues on that side so again a lot of assumptions go into making these long-term plans um but we do the best that we can with the information we have as well as looking at Trends and history of what has happened in the past um and then we just have regular generic contracts increases that are going up either by CPI Transportation contract increases every year so those increases are assumed throughout as well so again what I mentioned before about the
037tax levy it is volatile based on CPI and some of the pieces that go into the formula so what this is kind of just showing it's too competitive so the gray is showing what if we went to the maximum tax levy based on the projections that we could do so we assume two percent CPI in all years out um our Levy actually would be higher than two and a half percent in some years as a result and then the red columns are capping it no more than two and a half percent each year so on the left you can see you know the difference in the two Levy limits and then on the right is just really the cumulative change of taxes by capping at two and a half percent or lower or actually going
038to what the projected maximum on the revenue side you want to jump in I can see that no no no okay um so and again these numbers are changing as we're getting information we don't have CPR but this year we don't know next year's taxes tax levy limit um yet we find that information out usually around mid-January um when we start getting what CPI is for the year over year we get our building a numbers um we you know we're monitoring our debt we're monitoring capital projects we have a lot of debt fall off the books this year which impacted our um tax levy limit we are looking at potentially doing a capital bond in the future that will impact our tax levy limit so all of that will continue to change uh these numbers
039and these projections again based on the you know the known factors each year and so this information does get updated on almost a monthly basis but yearly we present to the board the long-term plan with the actuals in the current year as well as we start developing budget next year we will continue to talk about these so this slide is a little scary um and when I showed it to Dr Mercer he said just leave I don't want to talk to you um because it does show it shows the physical clip it shows what could happen um again our revenues are in the blue expenses are in the green and then the line is showing fund balance the declining line and it's just showing that if we don't tax more if we stay under the
040two and a half percent of a levy limit we would start eating fund balance to support our program and slowly diminish our reserves and then on the other side you can see if we were to go to what the potential maximum Levy is our reserves don't fall off as much and we're able to support the programs a little bit more going forward so again this is just opening the conversation it's it's taking a look at this is what could happen this is worst case scenario but now what we're doing is we're having a conversation in administration how do we how do we not do this how do we fix this how do we prevent going on that Cliff how do we prevent using our reserves how do we not go to a levy that's higher
041than two and a half percent uh you know sticking to the board goals and of the community under you know there is still that belief that you cannot tax more than two percent where two percent is only the CPI in the formula so it's having the conversation it's it's informative for our Administration to understand here's worst case here's where we can go but what are we going to do to prevent it so those are now the conversations being had in order to prevent a physical cliff and as well as make sure we're not putting a larger burden on our taxes so again just in summary um this is projections it's a summary of what could happen it's surpluses and deficits that are out there um it's opening up the conversation we need to find other
042ways to increase revenue and not with the burden on our taxpayers is monitoring state aid it's having um you know advocacy at the state level to help the districts and not put the impact on the community and the taxpayers um it's looking at our tuition programs and it's making sure that we're just able to maintain the current programs that we've put in place and continue to support our kids the best we can moving forward questions from you so again I said at the next meeting but prior to the meeting we will share with the fourth of full long-term plan document which has a lot of notes and references in there as well as some other different type of Graphics it's got appendices to show the supporting information and the calculations for a lot of this
043information and then it will be posted online for the community community um I don't currently have it in there but I certainly can we can do like a federal piece to that document without any issue yeah no problem so we'll also give updates um as we begin the budget process process because we do have a year and a half left of that Federal money um so when we start budget we will make sure we're including updates to the programs we've been running how much we've spent so far what our plan is going forward to finish the spend a bit um the success of our summer programs that we did some of the after school clubs that we've been running with that money um so that will will continue that conversation during budget process thank you
044yep no problem yes thank you all right so just moving on to a couple of the committee updates our safety team is actually tomorrow so they this is kind of this if you're interested in Japanese [Music] we are looking at many of the obviously we're heading toward budget season acadians we've been looking at just to go to companies district-wide safety initiatives as well I'm looking to do some drills to Southern Police Department and Mr Spiller in fact so he would be reporting that on that as well as updates on whatever security I would have to say that you know thank you Mr spillery you know just actually talked to the board earlier about um a great addition you've been and thank you for your professionalism where you kind of brought you know your team together
045to really do some great stuff foreign scholarship is the ID system that was supposed to have in place in September for the production delays and things like that particularly prevented us from from bringing that to you know to the school that's kind of hope that will be judicial the goal is January um where Miss mangonia they're working with the programmers who get all the student information in there um and we will roll it out slowly and make sure the students are fully aware of what is happening but it's basically uh all children will have to have their ID card their student ID card on them at all times they'll scan when they get into the building and it kind of kind of becomes an intended system as well but it allows us to know where
046students should be so it eliminates the roaming of the Halls students that maybe should be in study hall an hour in the cafeteria when they should it allows our security team to have a portable portable device you can easily pull up a kid's schedule if we are seeing it's a consistent you know student that keeps roaming the Halls finding out where they should be it's preventative for children to be leaving the building we know those that should have an early dismissal versus those that should be in the building at all times so um it's just another it's a security measure a lot of districts have implemented this in the local area and spangonia did a lot of research on it we've had them present they presented to the Safety Committee as well so we're excited
047like Dr massar said we were hopeful it would be here in September but there were some issues um with getting the actual devices so we're making progress making Midway with the intent is for January but again information will be worth coming at the high school level when that is Ultimate that's only Middle School in high school it's actually just High School just nine through twelve yeah yeah we're going to start 9 through 12 and use it iron out any kinks that we might find out well literally just scanners and entrances so it's a kiosk it's like a little kiosk and it's a quick they scan as well as the security team will have portable kiosks that they could scan like so at a sporting event even um they would be able to have a portable
048and if we had if we were to say you know it was only 11 to 12th graders that are going to be attending this game they would scan the students and that way they would know oh you're a ninth grade I'm sorry you can't come into this game for whatever reason it might be if it's a security reason a safety reason um but it gives us a little bit more of that control um if it's maybe a student that should not be in the building um we have the ability to now see that and know that they shouldn't be at the sporting events either and those type of things so um personally my home District does this and with many many I mean we're I'm only employed thousands of children and they stand through that
049door every day and that was our biggest concern is how are these how are we going to do this we need to make sure the kids are flowing and we don't want to back up on the line um but knowing the larger districts that have successfully implemented it and working with the scholarship team we have on Long Island where where during the morning entry you know since all the kids came in that had graduated previously came in and actually promoted some trouble for that history and so it eliminates that if everything is a scan we don't need anything else right and another is like we've got conversations and concerns from the security team is sometimes they don't know who who's a student and who's not you know if it's a new security guard they don't
050know that that child graduated last year and they're just walking the Halls so having the children have an ID badge you know we require all visitors to check in and go through our security system and wear our badge all our staff is wearing badges we need to know where the children are we need to know that they're a student of Center urges and should be in the building and where they should be so that we you know where we know where everybody is and everybody's in the right spot and we can control that educational environment so the Dei the diversity equity and inclusion committee met on the third and I apologize for those that um thought we were going to meet the week before we had a conflict with the high school that had an
051event especially because every Everything District guys too at the highest goal which is fine so we did meet on the third we had a really good discussion the theme around that meeting was culture competency so we began the meeting as we do every meeting with the D.I Liaisons given the opportunity to kind of give a brief summary of some of the work that is being done at the mid at the elementary Middleburg High School we did began a conversation regarding culture competency we looked at a video I showed the video of uh Dr John Hattie who's an educational researcher renowned all of the world went in about 20 books on education and assessment and we looked at his perspective regarding culture competency that bridge into a conversation we had as a committee something that we
052talked about last year and something that the salonsky kind of brought up and now committee meetings last year in terms of what are we doing as a as a committee to sort of expand the conversation around cultural awareness so we talked last year about the possibility of having a cultural event uh district one so that is something that we began in a conversation about last uh at the last meeting of November third meeting I generated a Google Document so that we can share it as a committee and allow every Committee Member to engage in the process and give ideas and we would collaborate regarding what we would like to do in terms of how that will shape up we talked about the professional development plan associated with Dei we then looked at and this is
053where the train kind of tied in very well because something that I have to commend Miss mangonia and of course is Foreman the work that they're doing at the high school each other the climate committee I wanted to bring into the attention of the of the DUI committee because I think it really is connected very well with some of the work that they're doing the filing committee meets on a monthly basis at the high school they look at ways that they could beautify the environment of staff and students ways that they can include diversity and inclusivity and make it a lot more welcoming and affirming to the coaches that exist within our society without we found out the district so I want that sort of conversation into the committee because I want to kind of
054bridge that tie or to high school into the Dei the last thing we talked about is we're trying to do Community Partnerships and we have a competing member a high school one teacher Danica dresser on the committee he is in education arts and Community empowerment which is an organization that uh pretty much housed a Patchogue that does a lot of art Associated events and activities around diversity and inclusivity we actually have someone from that organization coming to our next meeting to come I speak about some of the Partnerships that we can have as a district with um Peace the next meeting is actually scheduled tomorrow so we are meeting here at 6 pm and there is a draft about minutes and the reason is it is listed as a draft is because I have to
055show it to the committee got the approval make sure that I identified the conversation and I outlined the conversation correctly and once it is finalized by the committee tomorrow we will post it on a website under the Dei tab in the district committee all right thank you um all right and uh legislative committee actually we met today um people to join the legislative committee because we are slightly light so it would be good if we had more people and more participations um we looked at um I am the co-chair of the South County Schools Association legislative committee um share the I shared some of the products that they had in terms of advocacy in the coming year with the group we've talked about the Long Island educational Coalition does a budget impact survey and that
056basically talks about all of the different things and other transit in the county and have school budgets have been impacted by some funding sources we discussed some of the local priorities lots of interest in some of the things that we can hopefully be advocating for here um we're talking Dr Meyer and I talked about some really cool projects that we'd like to see in the high school programs for sustainability in mind sustainability that's a project we can do that may require us to reach out and just now they've seen and try as a support for those there are also some advocacy activities coming up NASA Southern school boards I know with an extension myself and hopefully a couple of a board members May attend an upcoming meeting on December 8th and um just kind of
057looking forward to moving along with this uh with this committee and trying to cover some good things to senators um other than that um we are moving toward the winter sports season which is kind of neat lots of looking like a lot a lot of really good participation sports teams we will be inviting uh athletes from The Fall season to come in to celebrate some of their successes um in an upcoming meeting So yeah thank you thank you questions and comments regarding tonight's agenda all right there's a public question session at the end where you can talk about anything if you want we just ask if you sign up use it out there if you wanted to sign up to speak what about it says meetings as prepared by the district clerk into the meeting
058of the board of education on November 2nd 2022. motion discussion all in favor yes motion carries four zero Financial reports he resolved with the support of education and found the recommendation of attendant of schools accepts the following Financial claims voter report October 2022 budget transfer one page motion motion second discussion all in favor yes emotionally carries 4-0 okay consent agenda he resolved the motion to completely consent agenda agenda items nine a through 12 B motion motion second discussion all in favor yes yes thank you accept agenda personnel we have resolved that upon the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the Board of Education includes the following resignations [Music] one of these days I will figure out start up all right it's definitely been out um I'll just read the instructions informational stuff members of Republican
059desire to address a question of course any topic related to board work are welcome to do so at this time speakers are requested included there remarks they're not more than three minutes to appoint a spokesperson of concerns if we're concerned and to supplement verbal presentations with written reports if necessary words yeah [Music] 100 absolutely and that was one of the best things okay Korea okay so my question uh is found on my email that I sent you the report and you've got right [Music] uh what you guys are gonna do with kids especially for the IEP kids I'm talking about the gifts that go on for the full diploma here you're not going to be taking one plus here one plus there I'm talking about six kids they are in school left right now going
060forward default diploma what do you I'm sorry what are you asking me why do you guys are doing for those kids what are we doing yeah um well I mean first off I'm so proud of these guys I mean you know the work you guys are putting into it um is extraordinary and you know setting setting the bar high for yourselves and you know I think part of the IB philosophy is just that is that what kids should be doing is they should be taking control over their own learning and their own lives and being a part of this in and of itself is something that we're creating an opportunity for you um I I think the question that you're asking is about the cost of exams is how interesting yes basically it was my
061email it was because we got um the letter saying now we have to pay for each test that the kids are taking now it's been covered by the school all the AP tests okay a lot of people a lot of kids are like you said in your email are not showing up so regardless of their showing up or not showing up for the test this district has to pay for it okay correct yeah I totally agree but I think this six kids that they're going for either the IB Program so they're not the kids that are not going to show up at those steps like it's certainly not a question of whether or not the money is is well spent for them to be able to take these tests um the question is more about
062the equity issue that sometimes is created around these kinds of exams we were trying to address an equity issue that certain members of our student body were perfectly evil and willing to take tests and were encouraged to take tests but other members of our community more marginalized populations we're not taking those tests and whether they would not take those tests because of financial concerns or whether they felt like they should not or could not take those tests we were trying to eliminate that so as a district we chose to pay for all of the exams whether they be IB or AP now that's not something that local districts are doing that's not something that's happening in I'm sorry no I'm sorry but we did it always no we didn't owe it yeah that was something
063that was something that the 2018-19 school year and again that's before my time but we chose to move toward to encourage participation because our numbers of participation we're not what we wanted to say we wanted to see more kids challenge themselves and take these exams um and again when you get these exams in and of itself it has the potential to create opportunity um down the road it creates opportunity because there are college savings I mean you know and I can speak to experience with my own children my children that took the APA exams and did well on those exams saved upwards of a Year's worth of tuition down the road which is a lot more than the cost of one exam at 95 right so so I I guess you know my point is
064if we were to say that we were willing to pay for exams for six children who are high achieving children that are going to be great we know they're going to do great they're set up for success in the future we are creating a situation where I think it's going against our diversity Equity inclusivity you know ideals that we're trying to strive to be uh because we are taking care of a group of kids as opposed to everybody else so that creates an issue for us you go in your school and agree school network so you should honor that four or five kids that they're going for the full thing and the minimum that you can do is like just to cover for those steps I mean we're not talking about people that we're not
065we're working parents regardless what the district does we're gonna cover those peaceful things I'm talking about the school doing the right thing and the minimum for this yeah I think in my opinion I will not speak for the water I'll let There's an actual speak to the board in my opinion the right thing to do for us is when there's a when there is any student is there any kind of financial need because of the cost of those exams or or at discounts across um to to basically say that we're going to pay for exams because of the Merit of the student and because they're academic and into the actual curiosity is is something that that's not something that we really want to get involved with um I think that that's that does create a
066situation where we are favorite students because of their academic ability over other students and in in some way assisting them you know financially which is not necessarily in my opinion appropriate when am I allowed to speak if I didn't sign off I'm sorry am I allowed to contribute is that allowed do I need to sign up if you could give us your name and hi I'm Melissa Jordan my daughter is Noelle Jordan she's a senior this year she's in the IB Program oh just grab some coffee I'll take care of that I apologize um so speaking to your equity and I do I did come here for this reason um you know you don't need to be that there is no um socioeconomic status stopping someone from being in the IU program so anybody can
067be in the IB program it's open to all students so um waving the feet for all six of those students is really inclusive of everybody because you're not singling anyone anyone out for being in that program from socioeconomic standpoint so I understand the frustration especially since it wasn't presented to us when these children were in the program that we were going to be paying upwards of thousand dollars for these children to take their exams so I think that's where a little bit of the frustration comes in is that I got a letter on a Monday about by the following Friday I needed to come up with a thousand dollars for these children to take the exams I think that's where the frustration comes in and to say that um that you know it's a an
068inclusive thing and you need to reserve those funds for the children because they may not they don't have the same opportunity they do have the same opportunities who might be receiving frame reaches lunch still has the same opportunity to be in that IV program so you're talking about six kids from all different ethnic backgrounds so it's your economic backgrounds whatever it is they get that same opportunity to be in that program and now you're just going to say well we're not going to pay for that because they're choosing to be in here well I guess to me it doesn't make sense and I just yeah so can I just address because I'm not I'm not hearing the same thing necessarily and it's not the conversations that we have that you're saying right so yes everybody
069has the opportunity to take the IB classes and everybody has the opportunity um to go work toward an IB diploma um not everybody has the same ability to pay for the assessments and when you ask for you you're saying can we pay for these six students we can't make a decision on six students in a vacuum it impacts everything else that we do as a school district what Dr Becerra if I'm correct to saying is that it causes some Equity issues for the rest of the student population and it's something that we're trying to move forward as equity and inclusion for all if you only got two weeks notice that's it totally acceptable that's a totally separated issue that we will certainly have conversations about and how we can be better with regards to that
070to the community 100 um but this is it's not tenable for us fiscally to make a decision that's going to impact our budget in all areas not just the six students nothing now no one decision is made in a vacuum in existence in a vacuum and that's where sometimes we have to make difficult decisions that impact some students um in order to make sure that we have equity for everybody I respect that the only last two things I want to say is at the last minute decisions are made to get buses to supply students to supporting sporting events and you're supporting your children and for people who can't travel to go see a a state tournament or whatever you want to support those I'm not making up a team or wrestling team this Socrates whatever
071it may be and you want to support your academic students as much and the last thing I want to say because this is hitting home for me tremendously these children were sold a story about getting credits to go into college my daughter is a plus she was recruited to Cornell for swimming and she's applying to Harvard not one of her IB credits is true for again not one and I think that's important for all of the students in this ID program to understand she's also been recruited to many other colleges and now I'm paying for a thousand dollars worth of exams and it does not matter what she gets because not one credit will go and I think that's important for people to know thank you you're welcome [Music] okay yeah thank you very much
072we do appreciate you coming um and hearing from the community and if you do have any other concerns please feel free email call Dr Sarah's always willing to meet with everybody um so we appreciate you coming out and having a conversations tonight our next meeting is December 14th at six o'clock is exact Action meeting is approximately seven o'clock right here in the boardroom close to adjourn motion second all in favor yes motion carries 4-0 thank you very much
