Central School District any discussion next time on the agenda item 1.04 approval or division of the agenda is there a motion that if they resolved in the board of education on the Fable manly Central School District approve the agenda as prevented I'd like to make a proposed revision so Marissa can we pull out 8.02 Personnel actions we want to move that into time or just pull it out to vote separately and then for item 2.01 if we can add to discuss the um history of a particular employment history of a particular individual so that way we don't have to do two execs we need to discuss in an exact and I don't want to put it in the last one and make everybody come back for it for us to approve it so if we

can just discuss it it'll be a couple of questions the first executive session that you're saying correct okay and then you want to you still want to keep it keep it yeah you can pull it up okay um so the motion then is to add to 2.01 that is currently evidence 8.02 and 29.01 any further discussion and so um that's the table 8.05 female Services um all right so then we're going to go back provider 2.01 there are proposed Revenue session is there a motion that would be resolved in the Board of Education of the naval family of Central School District insurance or executive session for the purpose of the Staffing the history from um [Music] all right so we're going to be a good confession we're going to try to keep this pretty quick

um okay foreign Saturday Wednesday thank you foreign like an hour and a half later and uh do it the whole time so so Rachel so I mean it was a good group of kids foreign like the car s um oh I think a different advocate for the ones I think are anymore foreign or something foreign very important businesses if they don't have reciprocities is cross-references there it is foreign over here thank you next Thursday so I cannot make a present s yourself like a representative that's actually there and a guy yeah and I would love to be able to explain is awesome that's great and that is my daughter today that girl thank you foreign this week [Music] thank you foreign okay earlier today guys foreign yourself thank you each other happens foreign thank you

foreign perfect foreign okay foreign visiting that oh foreign right here foreign thank you between thank you foreign we have the Christmas Eve Lyn thank you sir perfectly gone foreign two years thank you every day foreign is okay episode sure foreign questions I've never seen anything yeah thank you sorry I mean besides foreign thank you foreign tonight foreign all around foreign the last year vice presidential presidential supporters thank you foreign within yourself so we will start with everything thank you thank you hello my name is Sarah Pinsky last week our daughter who was an eighth grade student at Eagle Hill found blatantly anti-semitic writings on a divider used in her French class a swastika is a symbol that immediately conveys its meaning there's no room for interpretation in this case it was accompanied by the phrase

juice the Jews and a drawing of a glass labeled Jew juice the meaning is abundantly clear and disgusting I'm very proud of our daughter for her mature response to an absolutely terrible situation her composure is due in no small part two years of Hebrew school education where sadly she and her brother have been taught how rampant anti-Semitism is How likely it is they will encounter it we never dreamed it would be in her Middle School however well this anti-semitic incident is upsetting for our family and other Jewish families in the district like ours we don't want this to be about anti-Semitism exclusively or our families experience specifically there's a much larger issue I'm here to address this is the second known incident of hate speech at Eagle Hill in the past month I do not

think the school or the district responded strongly enough to the first incident and I'm here to ask and challenge you to recognize a stronger response is required now after a racist hate speech was found in an 8th grade boys bathroom in October we received a vague notice from the district alerting us re-stating that hate speech would not be tolerated in the district the letter assured us that an investigation would be conducted in order to punish those responsible most notably missing from the letter was any type of concrete action plans or steps the school would be taking to address it or educate students about hate speech and tolerance or bigotry our experience has been similar so far it was abundantly clear when I spoke with the school administration on Friday they did not have answers for

how they would address it other than to say they would investigate and ask teachers to speak to students I inquired about a whole school assembly and the response was that they were challenging to have after the when I asked more about the previous incident I was told they didn't want to draw too much attention to it but that teachers were instructed to talk to their students about it based on reports from my children and other students it was clear it was not widely or consistently discussed there have been other incidents of hate speech used on social media or at hsa-sponsored events and each time the response has been to focus on the school's ability to investigate and punish rather than educate of course punishment is important and warranted but this must be a teaching moment

if we don't take the opportunity now to address hate speech We are failing our kids incidents of hate speech are increasing Nationwide it's hard to see this trend reversing anytime soon racist anti-semitic homophobic transphobic and other vile speech has no place here there are resources for districts for how to deal with hate speech I implore the district to immediately understand what they are and how to implement them last spring the voters in this community overwhelmingly supported the three candidates okay um May I finish my sentence voters in this District overwhelmingly supported three candidates for school board who are explicit in their support for diversity equity and inclusion and you have a mandate as a board to prioritize these things that means addressing it openly and honestly even when it is painful this requires a serious

and unequivocal response thank you um next we have Marie kulkowski hello my name is Marie kulikowski and I'm the mother of two students in the district one at Enders Road and one at Eagle Hill excuse my accent it comes out more when I'm nervous I come today to say that no Community is immune to ignorance and hatred but what sets communities apart is how they respond to it a few weeks ago when I hate filled racist graffiti was found at Eagle Hill Middle School in the eagle Hill Middle School bathroom my heart sank no one wants to think that the school they send their kids to would have kids who would write such things however I was hopeful that strong actions would be taken afterwards when I learned of the anti-semitic graffiti last week I

was not only saddened and angered by the hatred expressed by a middle school student I was concerned that this was becoming a benign occurrence with the here's another email from Dr Thai's feeling I work at Syracuse University when our campus was faced with hate speech and racist and anti-semitic refugees a few years ago students rose up and demanded something be done that we do not just accept another email deploring hatred be the only response out of this came the development of fys 101 a mandatory course for all first-year students of course taking a real look at identity cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity diversity and inclusion I have taught this course for the past three years and can tell you from personal experience that it is a great way to have difficult discussions to have everybody take

a step back and learn how words or actions can affect others to create a more under more understanding and empathy and learn how to become an ally and stop the cycle obviously a class like that does not solve everything but it's a start to building a better community in addition as you clearly highlighted the hatred that the hatred would not be tolerated on campus and that if culprits were found they would face serious consequences as we know kids in general and kids in middle school in particular need clear boundaries to thrive I found the response from the first incident or underwhelming I really hope that this time the school will have a stronger clearer response maybe a full assembly where students can hear that this will not be just another graffiti where they can hear

that this is unacceptable and what the consequences of these things can be both the damage hate speech causes to the targeted group but also the real world consequences that people found guilty of spreading hate speech and threats face kids need to know that this is serious and will not be taken lightly I would also encourage a similar message to parents over the past two years I've heard kids talk about how some kids not a lot but some kids in their school use the n-word on a regular basis some kids tell them to stop but that's just not enough how is this happening in manly yes New York in 2022 why are kids okay with hanging out with a kid who says that word and why are parents willing to look the other way I think

it's time our district engaged both students and our community and some real conversations about racism anti-Semitism stereotypes prejudice and discrimination and the consequences words can have thank you [Music] thank you Todd Penske thank you everyone um just a couple points and obviously you've heard from my wife you've heard from our friends you hear from others in our community um all I want to say is that you know we're proud that our daughter went through a rite of passage earlier this year where she had our Bat Mitzvah wonderful Jewish celebration but she also went through another rite of passage of having her first experience of anti-Semitism and we're happy that it was not seemingly directly right at her but this is something that she knows she'll have experience with throughout her life but what she also

needs to know is that she's not alone in that and that's why education from her school from the district from her teachers from her principals from everybody lets her know that she's not alone when she finds something like that or experiences something like that even if it's as seemingly benign as a doodle um what I would encourage the district to do is to take action quickly but we don't at least I don't expect anyone on this panel to be experts on specifically anti-Semitism or hate speech but there are those resources out there I'm proud that I'm uh the vice president of the Jewish Federation of Central New York here in town but there are other resources and you can reach out to us we can put you in touch with various entities the ADL being

one of them that can help provide those resources so that you can teach others how to respond in real time and part of that real-time response when I'm going to encourage you all to do is to not put this on the agenda for we'll look at this in months from now and we'll come up with some we'll get a task force together and we'll come up with something that's really good in months and months now this is on that needs to be in place very very soon because as you've heard the kids are talking about this not just this specific incident but the words that they're using that they're getting desensitized to that they're finding to be okay that happen all the time that's what we need to get out in front of so I'm

encouraging you and challenging all of you to get out in front of it yourselves to put our district in front of all of such New York all of New York State all the country quite frankly that we can be a model community that knows how to battle these things in real time before they even happen obviously they happened but let's quash it and teach about it now before it becomes a real problem where we're talking about violence or something worse thank you very much Dr Tice president Mims and members of the Board of Education my name is khaim Jaffe thank you for allowing me the opportunity to address you tonight and for being so transparent about recent events I am the parent I'm going to lose it and the parent of a current FM student

high school student and two of them graduates one of them who's here sorry I'm also the grandson of Holocaust Survivors and pretty active in the Jewish community the anti-semitic incident that occurred last week at Eagle Hill and those that we have recently seen unfold in the media and most recently on Saturday Night Live this past week are alarming to be blunt disgusting as is the other incident of hate speech that occurred here at Eagle Health several weeks ago in recent days there have been similar overt acts of anti-Semitism in Buffalo and Maryland and as some of you are aware last week's credible threats against synagogues in New Jersey unfortunately we live in a society where human decency tolerance inclusion and acceptance of others often take back seat to hate exclusion and xenophobia we will never

fully eliminate Prejudice and bigotry but it is an incumbent on all of us to educate our children about diversity inclusion and respect while my children's experience is a white as white Jewish Americans are different from those of their classmates from other races and Faith communities we all have an obligation to be warm and welcoming to everyone that's not just a Jewish value God knows it's a human value so what can we as a community and a school district do to advance the conversation that must start now not tomorrow now while the diversity Equity inclusion committee that's being formed is certainly an important piece of the puzzle let me suggest that we need to immediately send professionals and Community leaders into all of our schools we have members of the Syracuse Jewish Federation here the executive

director we have members of the Syracuse Jewish clergy here what the district what district-wide programming looks like depends on the audience conversations with high schools with high schoolers can certainly be more direct and more blunt than the dialogue with Elementary and Middle School students I want to share a brief story some of you know that for the past 10 years I've shared my grandparents Story of Survival with the eighth grade class at Wellwood at the conclusion of my presentation two young ladies from the Muslim Community thanked me for my conversation with the group about acceptance these two young and brave students told me that they had not been accepted by their peers and that they had even been bullied by some I encouraged them to reach out to miss Corbin or to any other administrator

I'm sure that this is just one of many other similar narratives Dr Tice I implore you and the administration to schedule assemblies days of learning or whatever is necessary to help change the narrative way too often we focus on the perpetrator's intent and why someone would engage in whatever the hateful behavior is doing so validates these individuals something they don't deserve what we need to do is address the impact of the wrongdoers behavior on the larger Community I can tell you that the recent incidents at Eagle Hill have rattled my kids while racism discrimination of underrepresented communities and anticism anti-Semitism may never be eradicated the first step to at least hopefully diminishing it starts with education that is what I'm asking from you Dr Tice tonight more education about tolerance and acceptance the district has

my commitment to help in any way I can thank you thank you remember president president I'm way shorter than you Heim actor Tice president Mims members of the board of directors my name is Rebecca rezig I am the parent of two current FM high school students my husband is an FM alum both of his parents are FM alums we are dedicated to this community in many many ways I am the daughter of a georgia-born black father and a yonkers-born white mother my father converted to Judaism before my parents were married I was raised my entire life with Judaism being the center of my world I have faced discrimination in every aspect of my life not wide enough not black enough and just different amongst the Jewish community when I walk into a synagogue that is

not my own the assumption is that my Irish Catholic husband is the Jew and that I converted when I was growing up my parents moved my sister and me to a suburban school district outside of Buffalo New York to provide us with a better education we were the only Jewish Family in the entire School District in seventh grade my locker was broken into and decorated top to bottom in swastikas the principal's response to my family was it's just kids being kids and nothing was done my senior year in high school I was attacked by three girls in my class because the substitute AP World History teacher teaching the Holocaust so he asked me to lead the class discussion because he felt my faith gave me some degree of implicit Authority on the subject those girls

Justified their Attack On Me by claiming they felt I was shoving my religion down their faces I tell you that story not for sympathy but to show you the effect of discrimination many many years later and I can still tell you how I felt going to school and being a focus of their hatred I hope that my children would not have to experience any of that especially here in Fayetteville Manlius our children deserve better when hatred and discrimination are not faced head-on they are allowed to persist they are given Credence I beg of you face this issue head on before it becomes too big to handle letting it fester and not doing anything gives the perpetrators more confidence to escalate their actions in the future just like those girls felt confident enough to jump me

education is the answer there are many Community Resources that could be brought to bear there are many of us in this community that have a similar story to tell and we are willing to help educate this next Generation about the evils of discrimination we are dedicated to this community and are willing to assist in whatever way we can thank you good evening my name is Angelique Massey and I am the parent of two children at Eagle Hill Middle School sorry [Applause] um within the past month as so many of share today Eagle Hills had two incidents of hate speech occur in both cases I have received an email communication notifying me of the incident but have not received any communication on how the district is going to deal with the intolerance that is incurring within

our community I am here to tell my friends my neighbors and the FM Community who are marginalized for those that have been targeted by this hate speech to know that I am your ally I will be your Advocate I will work hard to make this a place where you feel safe seen and heard be like for a child to be taking an exam and see a swastika drawn on the test divider that separates you from another child or child that walks into a public restroom who sees the racial slur disparaging them on the bathroom wall who already feels marginalized in a predominantly white community children they are children and that's what I think we need to remember a child wrote a racist word on a bathroom wall and a child drew a Nazi and fascist

symbol on a test divider what conversations are we having with the children in response to these two incidents three weeks apart what are we doing to combat this hate we need to do more there needs to be a district-wide approach to engage and educate the community provide educational opportunities informed and facilitated discussions with presenters and subject matter experts partner with school leadership and faculty home and School Association leadership parents and leaders in our larger community we live near several higher education institutions can we not engage with them to bring meaningful discussion and awareness to FM here about three years ago and granted much of our experience has been through the lens of a pandemic but aside from a handful of experiences I have not seen programming or opportunities for the community to come together to

have real and impactful discussions if I've missed them I apologize I'm happy to work to help bring better communication and transparency to what is available here but if they are not here let's work together to offer them to FM I have read through the email Communications and the documents that were shared there I have volunteered to serve on the Dei committee that will be formed but what can we do now I'm not the only one frustrated we need to start responding to these incidents and the mentality and belief that created them right away let us not just shrug our shoulders and move on let's begin a meaningful dialogue so we can start to be the change we seek thank you Joshua good evening peers my name is Josh Weaver I'm here to speak about the

opportunity our school district has to say yes to a veteran tax exemption you've heard from fellow veterans who spoke about the financial or more analytical side and I've heard your response I'm here to share with you and all who tune in the personal side from someone such as myself who spent 550 days in a combat zone after 9 11 when I talk about Foster father I wanted to leave College to join the Army he said you'll be behind your peers you know I thought to myself I'll catch up I served eight years in the military and instead of getting a bachelor's in 2004 I received in 2013. by that time I had three daughters two while in school all my peers had a peaceful environment back home to earn a master's PhD start a business

or simply Advance the career I was sacrificing by bringing the fight to the enemy for that piece at home 911. never forget while my peers were taking risk in business ventures I was risking my life I don't say this slightly it feels like you forgot but this is about more than time there are internal scars and Trauma I've endured I will speak to those at another time and how they affect us and prevent us from Catching up or even living on a normal plane this is also about inspiring the Next Generation to say to them we will not forget you we will not forsake you this veteran tax exemption enacted at a local level School District means something more than saying we will wait until the state takes action the this is an opportunity to

thank you verse saying we are not willing to sacrifice even though you sacrificed and continue to sacrifice to be clear to the audience if enacted only a percentage of taxes are reduced the percentage increases only for combat veterans and Veterans with disability ratings of all veterans only 10 percent engage in battle we are only seven percent of the population so 10 percent of seven percent of the population what a burden it must be to say thanks to so few don't let this opportunity pass enact the tax exemption for veterans thank you for your time um what happened we're not going to be able to get you guys this tonight obviously but we've definitely written down who our resources are how we will be reaching out to people the Dei committee that is across the main

form I understand waiting I understand so I totally understand why the urgency to address that we don't want any of our students to ever feel not part of this community or to have their to be attacked and related to religion physical limitations anything like that so you know I apologize to you know your families that you have to control your not to experience that it's not the um what we want in the district and we can do better and we'll learn from you and thank you very much for coming is there a problem thank you either tell me we value this service um you benefit is going to be a new agenda have your name and I will make sure to get your let you know when that meeting is going to take place that

you can attend it and listen to so thank you all very much I very much appreciate it foreign item 4.01 we have a curriculum reports the presenting about our program thank you very much it's my distinct pleasure this evening to introduce Katie Gabriel who teaches painting and drawing and advanced art courses at the high school and she's also the coordinator of our visual arts program Katie is here tonight to present an overview of our K-12 visual arts program as well as the individual Arts assessment Pathway iaap to graduation as a result of Katie's leadership expertise and passion FM was approved in July to Pilot the iaap at the start of this school year in addition to her work with her colleagues across the state on this very important initiative Katie serves as a Content expert

for visual arts for State Ed helping to develop and promote quality Arts education throughout our entire state well this is not part of her presentation it should be noted that Katie and her art Department colleagues are continually seeking new opportunities to support students in advance Fine Arts education at Fayetteville Manlius to highlight an example and not to embarrass Katie I wanted to share that Katie was a 2020 National Science Foundation Grant recipient along with Dr Eric Coughlin at Syracuse University he's a professor of astrophysics no relation the grant project entitled a start was an immersive learning experience combining the science of the stars with the visual arts this Student Art catalog which I'm sure we could make copies for board members is represents the work that was produced by the students the painting and drawing

students as a result of the grant additionally multiple student art pieces from the project were on display last year at Katie's exhibit entitled lines and lineage at Onondaga Community College in the art gallery this past summer Katie received yet another Grant from the National Art Education Association to continue development of this outstanding project and the related curriculum were extraordinarily proud of this work and we are extremely fortunate to have such an exemplary visual arts program at Fayetteville Manlius and such a tremendously talented artists and teachers so I'm going to turn it over to Katie thanks thank you thank you Mary I wasn't planning on her airing out all my art my art and laundry over the last couple years but thank you for sharing um one thing I'll take away just uh to add about

that start project with my now friend who's the astrophysicist is um that we're excited to do the project again in a different way hopefully through video and it's about um black holes and the mathematics behind black holes and title disruptions and the visual arts so that's what our next project is going to be about in the spring I'll keep you updated um and I am a Scientist at heart my I come from a family of scientists so interdisciplinary Arts is really really important to me so thank you to the board thank you to Mary and that wonderful introduction um and thank you to our supportive board for the most fantastic art program that I'm so proud to work with this team of artists and artists slash teachers are very busy developing and delivering new curriculum

and continue to bring the Arts of FM into more contemporary and interdisciplinary lens here are our current teachers at all the different buildings within the district we have many new names on this list as the last couple of years has kind of cycled through some some new and exciting colleagues that are have big plans for for our district I wanted to begin this presentation by linking some of the district goals to our our visual arts program in particular teaching and learning our school environment and Service Learning and Community Partnerships so starting with our district goal of teaching and learning these are as uh described by our district teaching and learning is innovative engaging and rigorous so that students become self-directed Learners and Achieve academic and personal success we as our teachers in this District have

a really unique specialty in which we can deliver this experience at an individual level to our students this year we are focused on updating our Curriculum maps and our online media resources to reflect new Dei initiatives and guidelines and our updated standards that were just updated right before the pandemic began in Visual and of course media arts which is new to the state new visual guides for course offerings and our iaap pilot for differentiated graduation achievement and restructured supports using schoologies Google Classroom iPads a new wide frame printer and other instructional technology platforms we did update our offerings at the high school last year so this year is the first time we're offering some new programming in our three-dimensional sector so we have we had to update kind of our course outline for students to

follow a pathway or a graduation sequence so this was distributed to families and to students in the beginning of the school year so we've tried to create some new visuals to help communicate our changes and I did provide a copy of some of our new visuals for the board members today I do have extra copies if anyone's interested I have them on a all the way on the other side of the building on the room by the door so if anyone would like one at the end of my presentation they're on top of the cabinet by the back door um so our infographics hopefully will help communicate some of these changes at FM viewed as our key to academic success Arts experiences can encourage systematically complex Theory and solutions the drive to persist through an

independent sustained investigation interdisciplinary inquiry and exploration of how New Media and process can influence larger systems in their world we're trying to create the Arts at FM through a more contemporary lens and seeing ourselves more as a thread that ties the rest of the academics and experiences together um some current statistics that we are really proud of are that 14 of our graduating seniors last year completed an AP Arts portfolio it's a huge section of our of our senior class and the AP Arts portfolio is offered in three ways as a drawing portfolio as a design portfolio and a three-dimensional portfolio that means one-third of our graduating seniors are currently enrolled in arts courses at FM and most of those have completed a three or five unit sequence in the Arts while in high school

we do serve a big chunk of our community at at least the high school I'd like to thank the board and I'd like to thank Dr Tice for working with us a little back story we have a group of very very passionate art students at the high school that were extremely upset that the district calendar no longer is being printed to Showcase K to 12 artwork as a parent in the district I am also extremely sad to see that this has gone by the wayside because that is how I organized my life for my children and myself and they asked Dr Tice to come to the high school to speak with him on a meeting that they planned on their own to talk about ways in which they could bring their artwork back to the

Forefront of the community instead of just in the school because they thought this was an important way that they were able to do that in the past and so working with Dr Tice and working with some other Professionals in the in the district we were able to secure a printer that is a wide format printer larger than anything we had ever offered in even our photography and design program for the students to use for their Community efforts and for large-scale projects that they'd like to bring um into the into the Greater Community and for the district this particular piece of equipment can produce in-house custom made and student made labels and stickers customizable clothing floor Graphics wall decals that are not necessarily permanent um like the rest of the paintings they've done so far the

same passionate students on the walls of FM window graphics and even vehicle graphics I don't know who's going to be the first volunteer for a vehicle graphic but so we're very very pleased to have that coming to the district I have all the paper in my room I just don't have the equipment yet otherwise you would have seen it tonight Dr dice so our next District goal is our school environment we believe in our department that our classrooms are a very very special place they are a place in which students feel and teachers feel that they can be flexible in their teaching modules and teaching philosophies students are welcomed in our spaces in a way that I feel like is quite unique it's a welcoming and affirming environment and it respects every individual at an

individual level our spaces already develop our places for Collaborative Learning and student inquiry and um I think one of the most most important parts of my room from experience has been um my classroom my students I know feel very safe in my room we've had a lot obviously in the community that has happened and I feel like our classrooms and the art realm have been a really special place for students to emote to share personal experience to share stories they always feel welcome I think it's a very special place for social emotional learning so we have developed um in our new classrooms I'm gonna skip hugs I just said Wellwood has a brand new Arts uh classroom setup that they received in the last two years that's now open to all the students that is

a great example of this philosophy it's um it's a room in which can be uh the furniture can be moved around the the way that the teachers have decided to teach their lessons whether it's through demonstration or through practice the room can be altered as such the lighting is all specially equipped with technology where you can Source the lights through and through remote control and you can zoom all the lights to one thing in the room it's quite magical but it's through efforts of the district and and and the board to be able to put together our new spaces as our art Department evolves so these are other visual examples of our Wellwood students working on individual projects we feel very passionate from elementary middle and high school that we are able to teach students

on an individual level we are not the type of teachers that will just stand up in front of our classes and have all the students do the same activity we get to know the kids on a personal level and on a making level and understand the spectrum of the making so that we can Source materials to a particular learning type so an environment such as Wellwood really does support that kind of learning style differentiated opportunities in the Arts classroom support the whole child promotes and promotes innovation in academics we are open and more open than ever to be more collaborative with classroom teachers and other disciplines in order to do some cross-collaborative interdisciplinary work between the Arts and other subjects coming soon to the high school we have a new photography and design classroom that's

being planned next year our photography professional will be in one of the modulars on campus however considering the amount of involvement by our professional Brittany Culligan with Architects and a design learning environment that is flexible creative and contemporary molded around curricular needs will ensure the future successes of FM photo and design which is constantly in flux as you could imagine um the last District goal to cover is the service learning and Community Partnerships educational opportunities extend beyond the classroom to enrich learning develop student awareness of the global community and promote intellectual and Civic engagement we have developed just in the last I know aren't they cute just in the last few years in fact in 2019 the first Academic Year of our pandemic we began our first chapter of National Art Honor Society I know

for the past 20 or more years probably more like 30 years FM has always toyed with the idea of creating a chapter of National Art Honor Society for our students but it never actually came to fruition until just recently our membership includes a robust team of FM artists Scholars and has grown to support 75 members of students at the high school these students need an excellent GPA in the visual arts they need to have enrolled in at least three accredited Arts courses and they make a commitment to use their artistic talents in the community by serving three volunteer projects throughout the school year last year NHS Antico no this year NHS anticipates over 700 hours of community service in the Arts in Fayetteville Manlius including partnering with Elementary and Middle School HSA events and art

classrooms running local art events volunteering their time at a local program called arise adaptive design where students are designing and creating adaptive tools and furniture for children in the community with physical disabilities being youth curators at the Everson Museum which we have two students currently running and participating artistically in Fayetteville Manlius theater Productions and of course our positivity project mural projects and this is what they get at the end I think more than half of the students sign up for nahs for the Fantastic rainbow and chords and tassels that they get at graduation these are a few of our members who dressed up for our Halloween event and of course Dr Kilmer who was a wonderful participant students raised money for him to kiss a fish actually it was for lots of different teachers to

kiss a fish Dr Kilmer just happened to win thank you for your service you won big time so I'd like to take a moment to describe um the New York State iaap program the iaap program is the individual Arts assessment pathway I've personally vested about six or seven years in the program in terms of its development um and it's finally rolling out right now in fact today the Board of Regents got together um to push it forward to the next step so we are fully engaged in the program we are the only School piloting the program in central New York the closest school district that's piloting the program is about two hours away in any given Direction many of the programs who are piloting are downstate and I've been working hand in hand with a

lot of really wonderful districts including some in our Tri-State Consortium on developing this program my concern and the reason why I wanted to be personally involved and invested in the program is because I wanted the program to reflect what we already do and what we are already excellent at so that wouldn't be a burden or more work necessarily on our teachers who are already teaching the AP portfolio we are one of the only local districts that actually offers an AP Arts portfolio so that is already a unique experience that we're involved in and I did not want to you know have this thing roll out from the state no matter what without our involvement just to make sure that we truly knew what we were getting ourselves into um so what is the iaap the

individual Arts assessment pet by the way these are all images from our students I should say they're fantastic the individual Arts assessment pathway is a graduation pathway option which students complete a locally determined three unit sequence in the Arts and demonstrate through a collection of creative Works growth over time that meets the high school to accomplished performance indicators in the current New York State learning standards of the Arts which were recently updated the iaap offers students a graduation pathway that prepares them for future professional and educational experiences and opportunities in the art Why Should students do the iaap well they can address the skills gained in arts engagement that cannot be formalized on a Regents exam the path to graduation success should be clear and Equitable for all students addressing the needs to provide additional

graduation Pathways for diverse learning types an equity self-reflection including CRS training caused us to consider if and how Visual Arts students see themselves represented in the idea of success of goal achieving and as a worthy path to help in College and Career aspirations we want to place an emphasis on students seeing examples of themselves reflected in all career Pathways and arts and design Industries are a very large part of the 21st Century's economic structure in fact in terms of the economy the Arts and entertainment and design Industries are top of our current job offerings in America below I think the one above them is agriculture so I had mentioned these statistics already but students in the visual arts program at FM currently Encompass a third of our graduating classes and our scores are much higher

than the average we had two of our professionals go to a conference for the advanced payment placement portfolio to see how they could do better and it comes to find out most the professionals that they were sharing the conference with were trying to figure out how to get a three and our current our professionals uh average score for their students is a 4.5 out of five they should have been the one giving the lectures and not sitting through them in 2022 FM had nearly 60 participants in our AAP program that is a lot of portfolios the iaap program follows the updated New York State Ed Visual Arts standards and rigorous expectations already established in our curriculum at FM so at the 2015 Blue Ribbon committee that's when FM was actually approached to write and pilot

the program in visual media arts so I said it's been a long time in the running they reached out to FM because they saw us already as an excellent program and they wanted to learn from from us and from what we were doing in the classroom with a visual arts curriculum already built to achieve portfolio ready artwork as a senior assessment FM is uniquely prepared to translate a student's portfolio to a formal New York state issued assessment as a Regents option so our timeline we are in year one all students needed to do this year is declare they were interested so what had changed is we ended up talking about the pathway in the beginning of the year instead of during the springtime when kids are signing up for classes and they just had to

declare locally with us through whatever means we saw fit and ready for our students that they would be interested in the pathway if they continue the pathway and something happens to the program they can still graduate under this pathway program that won't be taken away and at the end of the school year students will be able to choose one to two artworks from a foundation course such as Studio Art either at middle school or high school or our art and culture program for the AAP that we will save and watch their growth in making over two more years next year is Art exploration which is something we already do in our level 200 classes where execution practice growth and reflection are already current aspects within our curriculum and they again have to choose one to

two pieces at the end of the year that they would like to put in their portfolio to suggest growth and year three continued creation through the actual Academic Year the assessment will happen at the end of the year and it will be assessed through a local portfolio assessment that we've already generated through a rubric um they will need to revise a writing statement and reflective statements from the three years organize and assemble six to eight pieces in the full art portfolio and submit a completed portfolio for Regions assessment and that's all I have unless there's any questions okay good thank you and then we did have a couple teachers actually bring in some artwork today so so we have um uh on the walls this is a really nice depiction because we chose elementary school

art alongside our high school work so you can see you know that Foundation that starts in kindergarten develop into our our graduates so if you want to walk around yes correct yeah so it's meant Pro 3. taking volunteers within our department to go through portfolios and right now we have I believe it's one two three four six six teachers that are involved in the preliminary Year One and we already have about I think it's about 40 to 50 students who've signed up which is wonderful yeah yeah so we're excited thank you thank you everybody [Applause] picture okay sounds good item 4.02 president um and our very talented student musicians who performed at the New York State School awards convention thank you that was a they did a wonderful job appreciate them time and their talent

to the board the Phil Martin leadership award any donation that you wish to make towards that award you can minimum me or drop them off into a little Sarah at the district office and if you have a suggestion for the leadership book you see that to me by Friday I wanted to share resources is fall in line with our work that we're doing on Dei happen to be taking a PD um through my my regular job and this moment of title so you want to talk about race it's an excellent book um highly recommend it and then a and I've kind of which is four women's news I'm not even going to try so you want to talk about race and I'm not good actual book and the other resource is the learning for Justice

magazine I think we still have a sun Library it's a givenary you know so it's a free resource and it has excellent topics that relate to Dei and some of the issues that we're currently facing this one's cover is teaching honest history and this one's expanding democracy and it touches on all aspects of EDI it's produced through the southern law arteries better and they also have free resources the teachers can order videos and there's all sorts of resources on their website so I'll pass those around so I'll take a look at those you can get your own subscription as well I have my own subscription comes right into my house um yeah I think that would be it's for me we do have a number of folks who did indicate they want to be a

part of the Dei committee and then you can see from the response we have from community members this evening there's something they need to get started on um so we will have some information about that I will turn around a bit later um and then we did talk an agenda plan about the veterans exemption packs and putting that on an upcoming agenda so I'll make sure I follow up with the gentleman was here tonight and that we have a report and recommendation an administrative recommendation on that at the upcoming meet although the deadline is March but we want to do it before then so that we really have a chance to come and weigh in on that and forward yeah I have a discussion about it and that was it for oh I'm so sorry

Daryl really I'm so sorry so Daryl Willard also would like to speak to address before under the president thanks Marissa I just needed a moment or two I wanted to speak about the ABC house because um my newsletter arrived recently and it occurred to me that many in our community are still unaware of the program that we kept in big families for almost 50 years it's hard to believe you saw me a name but how did Barbara Sutton she was a reading teacher in our district for many years and she was part of the original group that got together just in the ABC program here father Martin Silva the pastor of Christ Church of Christopher the coraleski and Amy and Gene were a few others she's also a board member there were 30 people all

together made up that first board and got the ABC off the ground Liz gladny I found an English teacher extraordinaire worked for many decades with our students and four of them the success of these women young women over a hundred of them now would have made you and making proud of the program that our community is sponsored so I asked Nancy Durkin the board of current board chair she would give me some extra copies of the newsletter so I'm going to share them with you tonight and I guess I would ask that if you've read them if you want to pass them on I just think we need to thanks thank you very much we'll move on to the item superintendent report I have a 4.03 episodes thank you president Mims my report is in

uh four docs for your perusal under Capital project update the construction documents are at State Ed facilities planning in order to get feedback and approval for the project to proceed the voter approved Capital project for the high school has completed the design development phase and has been submitted for third party review in an effort to expedite the schedule and time for bidding this winter assuming successful bids and given the current phasing schedule we anticipate breaking ground in the late spring of 2023. the project would then continue for about 40 months until it nears completion during the summer of 2026. under strategic planning as you're aware our annual report arrived in community mailboxes this Autumn within the report is a QR code for Community satisfaction survey embedded within the surveys and other questionnaire for trying to

gauge interest in participating in our district EI committee as of this evening's update we have received over 600 responses with over 100 individuals interested in serving on the Dei committee the district satisfaction survey is open until midnight this evening under upk our upk program with our community-based organization Partners is in full swing our executive director for special education and early childhood initiatives and Melissa Corbin is already working with our assistant superintendent for business services Brad Corman to prepare the RFP requests for proposals for the upcoming year both Melissa and Brad are interested in moving forward in an expeditious manner in order to allow our families to the family's time in order to make plans for the 23-24 school year under Dei as mentioned earlier we have over 100 respondents for our survey that are interested

in serving on the Dei committee similar to our Capital project committee the command Community School Safety and Security task force we are encouraging all interested individuals to register and then we'll select representation from the different stakeholder groups to ensure that there is representation from all six buildings and throughout Fayetteville and Manlius as reference the deadline is at midnight tonight speaking of Dei our administrative team continues to participate in the Syracuse University study Council Dei book study with Dr George Theo Harris along with a number of other school districts throughout Central New York these efforts coupled with the administrative cabinet book study and the board of education's recent retreat with officials from the ocm BOCES helps to continue the Dei conversation as we move forward and then finally last but not least congratulations to our student

musicians that you heard from president Mims and student thespians there's a lot going on not only with the nisbah presentation with our select strings but also our high school Trail will be performing at the nisma conference in Rochester New York in early December our student thespians will take the stage at the high school for a student authored fall comedy this weekend as well as their middle school counterparts at Eagle Hill as they perform Shrek Jr for friends and family and then finally congratulations to our student athletes with the first snowfall of the season in the rear view mirror today I just wanted to take a moment to congratulate all of our student athletes on a successful fall Sports season they should be particularly proud of their accomplishments both on and off the field of competition

that ends my report I have any questions from the board about the Titans for his first report well I had a question Dr Tice just real quick on the upk update um because I know you said you're going to put out the RFP are we targeting kind of the same um size as we had this for this first year about 100 I think the number was about 105 seats so they had additional classes additional 20 16. so it would be about about 120. okay great thank you certainly the mental health update is in board docs as well uh professional learning day I'd like to thank Mr will DeSantis for his presentation on suicide awareness for teachers and staff at last week's professional learning day Will's presentation coupled with Kim Mackey from BOCES training on the

administration of the buy Mass II mental health screener provide an important insights into the schools limited but critical role in supporting mental health of our students under the youth mental health supports night which occurred since our early October board meeting again I'd like to thank Mr will DeSantis and his colleagues from prevention Network content Community Services East area support network for presenting three very informative concurrent sessions at our first annual youth mental health night in October while the inaugural crowd was small in size their gratitude and appreciation that they conveyed to me regarding the importance of this event sent a clear and Powerful message of the importance of engaging our families on this topic and then last but not least supporting our students mental health brochure as you know the school district mailed copies of

our mental health supports brochure to all community members which is similar to our approach in sending out the district newsletter this was deemed important as it helps to inform all our stakeholders about the activities that promote awareness education strategies that Foster relationships the connections and the actions that support well-being the responsive Services which are being provided in the district that ends my mental health update questions from occupies on that report thank you James I would just you know as we've heard tonight from a lot of the speakers not forget the inner connection between Dei and mental health when we're talking through the investing Health supports and how we can make sure that we're keeping in mind all the different that cause different stresses and and concerns for our students no absolutely and I know there

was some mention regarding the vagueness of my reports that was because they were active police investigation and now that the details are out and about I'm not sure the status of that active police investigation but it was in no stretch of the imagination to minimize the district's responsibility and importance in this area it was really trying to be sensitive of the investigation that was underway additional questions to recognize all right items 1.05 committee and representative updates nothing um it's like CRC is meeting on the 22nd facilities yeah in the interest of time everything we've covered on that is in the metaphor as well so embarrassing questions the actual meeting minutes you can look up but we did have a question for the board about Sarah mcgridley showed us that the features of the board of

war dogs can provide and um one of them includes the ability for community members to follow along complete policies so if we are going over a policy today at a meeting like this the community either at home on computers or if they bring a lot to them they can follow along with the policies and see if changes could be made and our recommendation is to open up I'll see if the board all right thank you seven different colors of red light depending on who's contributing into it Sarah talked about having it as a when it's in first reading and then when it's in second reading it's just as part of the board you can agent that when it says these certain policies the first reading currently the public version doesn't show the public what we're

talking about it just has a title so they'd probably be able to open it up and see the policy we're talking about the first reading if they want to speak to that at you know at public comment they'd be able to do that to give us advice on what they think about possible uh legislative Orchard uh that six hour meeting that I that happened and no business meeting um where I missed the whole Retreat it actually was very interesting for the first four hours or so everything every single um item that we wanted like voting yes or no after lettering is The Advocates should advocate for it they agreed with us and I'm an hour or two that we spoke about people agree quite you know it was it went pretty well in our favor

um especially the electric plus the as for State funding for electric buses and that was 91 votes yes or a percent 91 yes 9 nine um so that wasn't our favorite the last two hours were things that some a whole bunch of school districts got together and they all spoke repetitively on the same issues so it just took a long time but in general it was an improvement yeah thank you and um Welcome to our student board member Victoria our first meeting um Sarah really is going to connect with you today she's sworn in before next meeting but they will also do that during our consumer meeting as well um I will definitely like to thank you to help you get on awarded and welcome to the board but we're very glad to have you

here all right thank you because connected to our fire student board member because she was able to give you yeah what am I doing here what are these people okay item 5.01 approval of the minutes of the October 3rd regular meeting is there a motion to approve the October 30th thank you Daryl second from Sarah any discussion almost a fair indicate I I know ones and are opposed from State um I have 4.02 approval of the special meeting held on October 17th the minutes for that meeting is their motion to approve those events any discussion all those in favor and can I I am opposed or abstained Rebecca item 5.03 is there a motion to approve the minutes of the special meeting held held on October 25th 2022. thank you Jason the second from Kelly

any discussion foreign chasing them item 5.05 policies and second reading is there a motion that the result of the Board of Education and the Fayetteville Family Central School District your wife approvals in second reading group revised policies number 1000 and 56 30. their motion zero second from Rebecca discussion so Marissa and the copy that we have for policy 1000 um there is a version one and a version there's an option one and option two which one is it that you're putting in to the policy it's on page seven yeah option two was after some suggestions that Sarah brought forth to the board so I remember the option two who put fourth first because this was would have been compromise and keeping taking into account the concerns that few board members have so this is the

language that Sarah suggested um yeah so I had brought it up to the policy committee following our last board meeting trying to gauge some of the concerns that I heard and talking to some board members so I tried to just draft some different language that I was hoping would still make it a solid policy but address some of the concerns that support we put out there as option two to have this evaluated and see how it was emailed out to everyone I had the meeting to make sure we'll have the chance to read the word so option two months um Marissa sorry I'm sorry I just want to be clear so we are voting on yay or nay option two if it's nay then it reverts back to the changes that are here that I

guess would be option one I will split this into option two I mean I mean don't approve option two then the next solution will be to approve the original version of it so right now it's option two for one thousand and then 56 30. then if we have don't have enough to approve option two for one thousand then I'll ask her if we should approve the original the original order the revised original yeah so the part and option that didn't Encompass one of the things we talked about when we last discussed this was making sure that we were not having this board discussion on same meeting on the same night so that we weren't having executive sessions that the person who was the subject of the vote came directly on it executive assessment that's that's

the piece that's still concerning to me has nothing so I believe the way we addressed it in parking from an Australia or Sarah is that the timeline there is a vacancy um the superintendent meets with the board the timeline for that so if that's why that's what we would discuss when we would expect from plan for meetings and other related so we can just put that in there in the language that you want but it's covered under the fact that we will be using that timeline that that assumes that you might include that is not what what's in there what several of us had asked what is the policy for that information on the night that we're building on it coming directly out of the discussion and they say that well there's going to be

a timeline discussion but that doesn't say but several of us could ask for on that specific point was so that's my concern That Remains yes and so again I understand what you've said here in the previous meeting but um the board who will make that decision you know we have that timeline you to do it so we will trust in the majority of the board to review that timeline for superintendent and to decide on when those meetings are and we've had a number of special meetings remember social media for the last month or so has been pretty difficult to get those together so the idea is we're going to be playing these out now our policy is not going to have every single thing every particular board member wants in there but we've done our

best to accommodate the overall Spirit of what people want um so with your concerns in mind I'd like to to unless anyone else have anything before with the vote on it could be an option two from one thousand and fifty sixth grade I think those I think those should be two separate levels of course okay we can separate them so I think I need a different motion now to improve it's either emotions aboard approve you have to resend the first one sometimes yeah I do thank you they're emotion or who made the motion to approve it zero okay all right so with that motion rescinded is there a motion and Board of Education approving fact reading revised policy thank you Sarah and a second from Daryl although the third Niki and I I any opposed

Dan and Kelly and anyone stating okay next is there a motion that the board approved in second reading revised policy 563 is there a motion thank you Kelly Sarah any discussion although the favorite API aye England Poland's birthday all right item 6.01 for development so is there a motion at the Board of Education the Fayetteville Family Central School District hereby approve the attendance of first amends at the 2023 news vote conference thank you Kelly your second thank you Daryl any discussion although the therapism okay so there were a number of us who attended the in this convention in Syracuse and we do have some time on the agenda for people to hear a brief reflection or debriefing of any workshops that they attended that they thought were pretty very helpful and of course there are

materials that you brought back links to um Workshop PowerPoints Etc we can we'll also make sure we share it opens before but I do want to do a few minutes of time right now to those who attended to uh feel free to start thank you yes I can do a brief report I did attend the pre-conference of the law conference it was always very interesting and I think the most interesting to us probably was the school board's role in the selection of curricular material how far are we to go and then the Supreme Court decision Canada versus Bremerton yeah that's um it sounded to me as an attorneys who were presenting it felt that Supreme Court had um the word Craig sorry Cherry Picked right right the facts in case that they wanted to address

it that way so that was interesting um the most interesting one I went to and then I'll be quiet I was one presented by Roseanne but her subject this time was um about human what was your title now humans of April blue so it was on the gender fluidity that we are all coming to be aware of and how to address it in classrooms and in society and I found it very interesting mine I think should be a good person to bring into the district at some point I will share my materials online uh Roseanne thing foreign great communication I just had one super brief uh aha moment I mean I have a lot of things that just spoke to me but one that I thought I could bring up because we discussed that the

getting to know the students getting the faculty and the presidents of our district that was true Logistics the fact that they're in that they said that the big change is obviously they're already passed they put their Supreme consolidated superintendent walks around they're interacting different than what we do like I said waiting to make sure that everybody's included that that I'm starting to pass it wasn't it um the school's third time I thought was particularly interested in considering our conversations around that and you know you know really reflected what we've discussed about um students in school with our time and of course all the work that he's complain anymore I also had a very interesting conversation with a company that does they they work with your data they don't change the system that you use for

your data but they they are able to adapt it so that parents can pull up certain reports more detailed reports that board members can get specific reports and they're also um the German does it impacting guys from Colorado um he finds France's money for it so I like the program and then when he said but this is something that would be good for our district because we're always looking for data but what specific data how does that looks because we believe um foreign it was great to have it in Syracuse first time what are they saying 20 years that had been back I attended a lot of the sessions with uh that you've referenced already uh certainly uh from the Keynotes to the concurrent sessions it was a very informative time so thank you all

for attending and then we've also had our Forge Retreat on PDI um what we're looking at in a retreat is we looked at the New York State cultural philosopher cultural education responses guidelines and we talked about how that um from each person stakeholders perspective what we thought we were doing as far as those guidelines in this perspective so that was really really interesting evidence of our our district actually doing the work that is in those guidelines that was both of what we did with um it was very informative as far as like where our gaps are and where our experts are holding between well through here Dr Dalton was going to share all of that information with all of us so that those of us who weren't there could see the results do you know

how she's progressing with that she was going to put all the information we did on the charts so that we could I can I can double check with her okay yeah so I just uh obviously I wasn't able to be there I was sick but um I just did get a chance to catch up with some board members individually to get some perspectives I'm really interested to know how we're going to move this forward as a group we've had at least two Retreats now on the AI which is wonderful and a great Foundation but how are we going to really move this forward so it sounded like at the end of The Retreat there was some work done on identifying gaps how I mean maybe the next step is seeing that on paper but then

will we have some working sessions where we can really get into the meat of um and I would think that that's a lot of collaboration with some portion of the administrative team to see what we can do as a board to help advance um this work because I just feel like it's it's time really getting into how do we apply these principles to our district in a in a timely way um so I'm just throwing it out there but I'm just hoping that if it's not tonight um where can we fit this in our agenda very soon to really talk about advancing it and one of those ways may be reconstituting an ad hoc Dei committee to do that along with being really intentional but intentional about planning facilitation of our community task force to

read that information um and I have sessions with Administration and then come to the board so I think that's something to do what we can get a um are interested in that Community to network working agenda items as I mentioned earlier we did if we want to um maybe changes to the veterans or the first so we're looking at companies to put those on the website or the jobs people positions which they're aware election plus transmission planning the lack of activity going on with regards to that type of money certainly as early as December's meeting I can have the team bring an update forward as I indicated in the Thursday letter and the backup information we are inviting one of the vendors out that we currently work with to take a look at one of

their electric buses considerations and future planning for upk program we are in the process of putting the rfps together for the security reviews as well as the upk meeting the things to remember generally the fall play coming up this weekend the Middle School writing each other well one last American dollars together with Sarah Idaho to 9.0 one Personnel action for promotion Personnel actions thank you uh next we have a proposed executive session the demotion Board of Education limited that concessions for the purpose of discussing the employment history of a particular person and a proposed after this fulfill property their motion generals that are presented possession we won't have any public support about me thank you all the way around the place foreign here I'm living there but it went to North Dakota good night Mary
