to order. We will begin with the pledge of allegiance. [laughter] >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Roll call, please. Mr. Bson >> present >> Mr. Darren Beckis >> preser >> here he is. [laughter] >> All right. Thank you very much. Uh good news items. >> We do have some very good news tonight. Uh as you know the Aberdine Public Schools Foundation every year sponsors our Golden Apple program. Uh this is open uh to any uh district patron who wishes to nominate either a staff member or a volunteer that goes above and beyond for our school district. And we do choose up to three people each year. Uh they
receive a golden apple and a $500 check at our uh January inservice. It is always a very difficult task to choose just three people and every year we come out with three very outstanding people which again we have here this evening as well. Um, I'll introduce them and I'll let them tell them a little bit about themselves and their journey here in the district. Um, and maybe some lies that were told along the way. [laughter] Uh, we have um Dr. Tina Bourd is our assistant principal. Uh, she's been at Central um, helping us out for quite a few years. Started out with us at Simmons Middle School and transitioned over to Central. Barb Nigard is a special education teacher at Central High School and Eric Schoffer is atteing [laughter] on me. >> I was you
first. >> All right. Um this is my 13th year in the Aberine School District. Um my 24th year in education. Um I taught in uh the school I grew up in for six years. Then we moved to Mitchell for a while and uh moved back here when I had the opportunity to um take on the assistant principal job at Simmons Middle School. Did that for seven years and then um went to the dark side and decided to try high school. Um I knew that my kids were going to be my two two youngest were going to be there someday and um just have developed a real strong love for the Golden Eagles and wish them success and everything that they do. um mostly because of you know my my own ties um my children I
want them to be successful and um part of that I think every administrator um should have children in the district that they uh teach in and and uh are the administrator for because it just really does help you develop another level of um caring and compassion for the staff and the students. So part of what I do is um for my own kids, but uh each and every student at Central is [clears throat] um important to me as well as each and every staff member. Um and I work really hard to make sure that they feel loved and appreciated. >> That's Tina's teenage boys got out of bed and were there on this day that we did not have school. So that was the [laughter] >> I'm lucky they get themselves out of bed every
morning. >> Thank you. Yes. Okay. Um, this is my 38th year of teaching. Um, 18th year at Aberdine. Uh, Cal and I came 18 years ago from I was in a smaller school, Grant Duel School District and Cal was at Mil Bank in Watertown and before that we were in North Dakota and Leola and a few different places. But, um, have loved it in Aberdine. It was a the best move we've ever made. nice to be in the same school district and teach in the same area and um our special ed team is amazing. It's just nice to work with people that are very supportive and helpful. And the school district has been awesome. And it's just fun to work with some of those kids and see them through to graduate and get their diploma.
And you know, I work with the behavior kids and they're some tough ones, but you know, we get them through and they work administration to get them there. And it's just been a real joy to work for the Aberine School District. I am retiring this year, so I'll miss it, but it's been a joy. So, thank you so much. Uh, so I'm Eric Shaer and uh I was totally caught off guard when they said my name. It had there has been so much going on the last couple months. So here's what happens. They like when you get nominated they um send you this form to acknowledge that you've been nominated and then so you know that you know there's at least the potential and uh but there had been so much going on I had
not even thought of it. It was it had just been so crazy. So I hadn't thought of it at all since. So, I'm just kind of sitting there and then uh they say my name or they like say Eagle Zone. I was like, "Oh my gosh, this is me." [laughter] It was a kind of a Okay. Um and my kind of my MO in life, I just love being prepared. And I was not [laughter] okay. All right. And then um I get up there as as you know, people are just very kind. It's a very supportive feeling because everyone's standing there and they um are, you know, clapping for you and it's like almost like an awkward like, okay, yeah, they're looking at me. All right. And then you kind of make your way up,
but it's a very supported feeling when you get uh as you're going up there. And then as I was up there, I just thought, uh, well, I'm glad I was here because my wife gets to be home with sick kids. Last year, my wife was deployed and I was home. Every time there was a sick kid, I thought, "Yes, it is her turn to be home." So, I start saying that into the mic as then I see my sick daughter in the background going [laughter] then I had the deployment on my mind because of that whole thing and then how the support of all the people was on my mind and then Dr. Guffin had said before that we really could be giving this out to so many people each year. So combining all those
things in my mind, I had just kind of thought I was like, I do feel very supported right now as they're all here cheering and clapping. And you know when else I felt supported the year before when my wife was deployed and the people in this school district, the way they stepped up and I don't want to start sharing a bunch of names because so many people did, but a couple of stories that just kind of I think give a good um feel for the type and level of support that was there. I remember one time there was a couple in the school district. the uh husband had sent me a message saying, "Hey, uh we made these two meals for you. Can I bring them by this weekend?" And I said, "Thank you so
much. That was very kind. I'm actually out of town uh with the kids this weekend. I brought them to so they could hang out with their cousins." The next weekend, I get a uh another text. And he says, "Hey, I have this the two meals." And then he added a third one in there, too. To which I replied, "If I say no this weekend, will there be four by?" [laughter] and he replied, "Absolutely." So, he came over later that day to bring the meals, which was very kind. And I opened the pack and I was like, "Oh my gosh, he wasn't kidding. I promise I was I did not just ask for more, but five meals came out of it." And I'm and I was like, "This is crazy." Um, which very nice, but it
was crazy. And then another time I had or well, someone from the school district set up this whole meal train and like that took a lot of work. And then she signed up for I think four meals herself. And then um I remember there was this Sunday and it was like toward the end of the deployment and I realized at supper I was like okay I am eating right now or my kids and I are eating a meal prepared by a couple who also gave us money for this uh gift card that we um used at the Kesler's deli that day. So I have had two meals today from this same family all the Aberine school district. So, all that I have to say is uh well, I wasn't prepared when I got the golden
apple, but then I was thinking, okay, now that I was invited to the school board, what do I want to say? And I thought I want to say that not only did I did I feel supported the day I got this apple, which I did. It was wonderful, but I very much felt supported the entire year before when I was single parenting and my wife was deployed. So, uh you have a whole you have a ton of great employees in this school district and I just wanted to take this chance to brag on them. Not only the two wonderful co-workers right here, but we have a ton and uh I love working with them and they I always feel supported by them. [laughter] >> You did a great job not talking about [laughter] >> again.
All three of these folks just go above and beyond. We could talk about all their accomplishments for a long time. Um just a lot of great things happening in classrooms working with some challenging situations and students. Uh, I did love the story though about how your children did fake their illness and got the bucket out, the thermometer, the whole >> It was played. >> Yes. Yes. >> Comments from the board >> for what you do. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> Thank you. I'm so proud of you. It's always interesting because you you you get nominated and so it's your peers that uh write a note about you and it's always I'm assuming humbling to hear what the words other people are saying about you and to hear that and to see the actual emotion that
it does bring about when you accept the awards. You know, now I've seen it now nine 10 times or so and uh the the the folks that receive the award, it's it's much more than a golden apple. just um the appreciation and it it lifts up all the peers I think when you u show that amount of motion but it uh it's uplifting for the entire staff as well. So thank you for what you do. We appreciate it. >> Thank you guys. [applause] >> We have one more good news item this evening. Um Mr. Shudder I think is also here from Central High School as well as a very special guest. Uh we have with us Norman Johnson. I'll let Mr. Shudder introduce him, but he has a great accomplishment with our all state band.
So Mr. Shudder, do you want to introduce Norman? And >> Yep. This is uh Norman Johnson. He's a senior clarinet player and um for the fourth year in a row he has auditioned his way into the South Dakota Allstate band which he's like one of 15 kids uh this year that's accomplished that uh feat there across the state and you know not something that's necessarily easy to do. >> I was curious about the number. Norma, do you want to tell us a little bit about yourself and your involvement with the band? Well, I've been playing clarinet since fifth grade. I went to Everton Christian, but then I transferred over to Central. I made middle school suit band. >> I'm in 42 livestock. >> Future plans? >> Going to SCSU >> as all the sharps do.
>> [laughter] >> majoring in uh a and bios systems engineering and I'll be in the marching band there at the pride >> state band is later this spring right city this year in March okay all right 15 that is a great accomplishment >> else >> comments from the board are you going to play when you're at SDSU >> in their band are you >> yeah in their concert bands too >> good for Actually, I have a I made the SCSU honor recital. That's this Sunday. >> They gave you a scholarship. >> Well, it's that's the audition really as part of it. So, I won't know until spring. >> Okay. >> Good luck. >> Thank you. >> You play any other instruments? >> Uh, a little bit of bass clarinet. >> Okay. >> Well, thank you
very much for coming. Congratulations. Well done. VERY WELL DONE. [applause] ALL RIGHT, we do have the agenda in front of us uh this evening. I would ask for a motion for approval. >> So moved. >> Second by Dr. Bortnham. All those in favor of tonight's agenda signify by saying I. >> I. >> Persons wishing to address the board. >> Nobody has anything to say. [laughter] We normally don't have crowds here. pretty new to us. So, board remarks. Okay, seeing none, uh, we have a number of items on the consent agenda. Would anyone like anything pulled from tonight's consent agenda? >> See none, I'd ask for a motion for approval. >> So, moved >> by Sharp. >> Second by Burkard. Any further discussion regarding the agenda consent agenda? None. All those in favor signify by saying
I. >> I. Same sign. Thank you. Reports of superintendent, Dr. Gothin. >> Thank you. The first item on the agenda tonight is the May Overby Elementary School report. Principal Newbert is here to give his report to the board. >> All right. >> Good evening. [clears throat] >> Good evening. Logged in here. Excuse me. >> All right. So, thank you for having me here. And uh as you see, I brought a few friends tonight. So, this is going to be a little bit more about them than myself today. But, I will touch on a couple of things real quick. We have a title math and reading event coming up. That's a pretty big deal. We had a math event earlier in the year. And the title reading uh literacy event is coming up next week. That's
February 4th. And so, we'll have parents in the building and all those activities will revolve around the book Charlotte's Web. So, we're looking forward to that. and we've just [clears throat] started talking about planning for the America 250th birthday. So, I'm not sure what that's going to look like. Um, we just started talking about that. Um, I will mention that uh the Zantas and I think I've mentioned this previously at least to my teachers and the administrators that uh the former Zanta club put a time capsule in Melgard Park in 1976 for the bsentennial and they planned well they turned that over to the Dakota Prairie Museum. So, they're in charge of that now. And of course, they'll be opening that up in late June, early July. And our student council can talk uh about
time capsules a little bit, but uh May Overby was one of the schools and one of the organizations that put information in that time capsule. There's like 110 organizations that have stuff in there. So, that'll be kind of fun to see. Um, on another note, um, going back to 1976, I was in fourth grade and that was the bsentennial. So, I remember this and I'm kind of getting old, but that was an important, uh, time in my school. I was in fourth grade, [clears throat] falls, and we took a field trip down to the fairgrounds, and they had what they called was the freedom train. So, it was a train traveling through the Midwest, and they had exhibits and so forth in there. It was a huge event and a lot of fun. So, I'm
hoping that whatever activities we come up with for the 250th will be as memorable and educational for our kids. So, that's stuck with me for 50 years. And I don't know if I'll make the next one. [laughter] I guess you guys got to have goals. So, all right. So, we'll get to our guests here. Um, as you know, the high school and middle school have a lot of activities. We don't have as quite as many, but the ones we do have are very important. We have all city chorus and orchestra. We have student council and now we have number ninja. And that's who we have here tonight. We have student council and our representatives are excuse me, our adviserss are uh Mrs. Noli and Miss Burn and Miss Apple's here with our number ninjas. So,
we're going to share a little bit about what's going on with those two organizations. As I said, they're very important. We have probably about a third of our kids are involved in one of those one way or another. So, we do know that kids who are in extracurriculars have better attendance, do better in school. So, it's good that we get this early start. So, that's why they're here tonight. All right. So, I think we have student council up first. >> Thanks, I think you want to teach me about the technology. [laughter] >> Um, that's okay. Um, I'm Miss Burn. I'm one of the adviserss. This is my what? Third year. Um, so it's been a real joy to get to work with this group. I teach third grade, so it's fun to see like the
third graders I had then move up fourth grade and fifth grade with um, student council. We have grades three through five. Um, we have about 18 kids. um that represent those grades. We meet twice a week. Um we do a lot of different activities, fundraisers, things like that. Um I don't I think this is audible. Oh, I have to click on it's not moving on the screen. >> I know, but it's moving up there, but I have to move it down here. >> Got it. Sorry. So, like I said, we meet twice a month. We do a school store. Um we have movie night. We have a kindness week. We do things for Veterans Day. Um different fundraisers and then other um activities. So I'll let Jaylen talk about our school store. >> We first
and third Wednesday after school items price five to $3, erasers, pencils, notebooks, fidgets, slime, water, etc. >> Um so these are just um we have volunteers. So our student council works after school if they're able to. they get to sell those items for um as long as they're able to be there. And then just some of those things that we have for sale there. >> Sometimes we have more workers than we have customers. [laughter] >> Free admission concessions available for purchase. Students choose movies based on books, drawings for giveaways after the movie. >> Um so the last time we just did The Wild Robot, um which has been a pretty popular book and movie. So, we did that in the fall and we're looking forward to planning ours for February for this semester. >> We
promote kindness throughout the week by doing activities and dress up days. >> Kindness week usually falls in like the fall. Um, this year we took kind of a western theme. So, that's why we have stick horse races and different things that go on with that. Um, so we have kindness bingo, we have kindness challenges, just different things to kind of promote kindness with our students there. This was previously Red Ribbon Week. We kind of added to it a little bit more to kind of add in more of the kindness. [clears throat] We kind of felt like that was a, you know, Red Ribbon Week was all about healthy and making good choices. And we realized kindness is kind of the way we need to enhance our schools a little bit more too. So periodic songs
along, sing alongs, read aloud and videos. veterans are veterans and their families are invited to attend classrooms, make thank you cards to pass out to the veterans. >> This is always just a fun event to see like the different ideas and people that we can bring in um just to kind of share with our students. We do it usually in the afternoon because our all city course kids are gone in the morning and we want to make sure that they're able to be there as well. So um we also do fundraisers. We try to do one each semester. This last semester we chose Spurs as our um recipient. So we did um it's called Pat the Teacher. So kids got to buy temporary tattoos and then stick it in the teachers bags and then they
wore those throughout um the day for that. So that's that bottom picture. That's all of our teachers that um participated. We were able to have um Spurs come to our kind of kind of ceremony and receive that check. So that was kind of fun. There we did a makeshift rodeo with relay races. We had little blow up stick horses and then the teachers versus the students ran a relay race. So Mr. Newberg got really competitive and looked at the video footage and >> swears that the teachers won. But >> the photo finish, but I think I pulled off. [laughter] >> There's some video if you really look for it. [laughter] >> Um we also do things for homecoming. Um that's the two pictures on the bottom. We try to invite um kids from the high
school to come and either play at recess or do readalouds or things like that. Um we do the 12 days of Christmas before winter break just kind of give us something to look forward to before um we go on break. We are doing an I hate winter week this week and then we tend to do a Mayday in May just kind of round out those activities for both semesters. That's all it was. >> Did you say the I hate winter week is this week? >> Next week. We started a little late with our meetings and we didn't have enough time to kind of plan it with the students. So, we're going to do it next week. Kind of have Northern's kick off our I hate >> Yeah. >> I think it should just be like
every week [laughter] this year. >> January, February. Yeah. Hi, I'm Jessica Apple and I've got some of my ninjas here with us. Um, last uh spring when they shared that they wanted to uh OMT had started number ninjas and they wanted to expand it to the rest of the schools, I just like knew I needed to do that. Um I have been involved with Averine public school activities since um I was in the womb with my mom and dad and once I I was dragged around to everything and I loved it. It is my favorite memories as a kid running between the gym and the theater at the old high school. So I just knew that I wanted to give something to these guys to hopefully increase um involvement as they get older in middle
school and high school. So, I am just so excited. I was hoping, you know, that maybe we get 20 kids. Uh we have 42 students that are there and it makes about about a third about a quarter to a third of our um [clears throat] fifth grade students. So, it's really cool. We focus on extending math skills and we've had some really great moments where teachers have shared that some kids have an interest in math that really didn't before, but they wanted to be involved. They wanted the snack. they want a big headband and shirt and to hang with their friends and now they're like invested in their math class which is so awesome. Um I've also had students we learned like two-digit by twodigit multiplication in number ninjas but we hadn't done it in
fourth grade yet so they told me I didn't need to teach and they could take care of it that way and they sure did. So that was a really cool moment of them also taking that leadership role as well. Um, yeah. So, that was pretty fun. And the rest of the students listen much better than they do for me cuz it was different. Um, they're also creating friendships with students in different grades, which is so important. And they're I mean, they're all at recess together, but it's so different when they're at ninjas and they're at their table working as a team together and getting to know each other. It's really neat. Um, we got to take three teams to OMT competition in in the fall and we really look forward to the April competition and
Dr. Guffin's quote about the uh number ninjas competition. It was the mo you would not have thought these kids were doing math. They were having the greatest time of their life. So, it was really really cool. Um, we also do like all sorts of different uh things. So, this is a we did an activity in the hallway, but then we also did a like uh scavenger hunt around the playground and it was really we were able to do stuff like that because of FBLA partnership that we have at MayoverB with the number ninjas and Baiton will talk more about that. But it's been so awesome having the high school kids coming down and working with the students as well. Um, just to show that connection of the high school kids and the little kids and
I think the high school kids might be more into even more than [laughter] elementary kids are. Um, but it's just it's just the coolest thing ever and I look forward to Thursdays every day or every week. So, it's the best. So, we have a couple students that are going to share. >> All right. Hi, I'm Kalista Oddsland and I am in fifth grade. I like number ninjas because you get to improve your math skills. I also like getting to meet new friends because when you get there, each table needs at least one fifth grader, one fourth grader, and one third grader. It's fun to be the leader and help other kids out. We get cool headbands when we complete and get all the questions right on our multiplication challenge. Um, the snacks we get are
pretty good. The competition was fun and I even got a perfect score. The shirts are pretty awesome. Hi, my name is Parkerstein. I'm in third grade. I like working for the next headband. I really like bath. So, number ninjas feels like it was made just for me. I was proud of myself getting and I roared for a perfect score at the competition. Ha. [laughter] >> Hi, my name is Ireland Metler and I'm in fifth grade. Some things I like about number ninjas is is working with other kids, especially with them being in different grades. I like working and helping with younger kids because I like helping them understand problems and new methods. Another cool thing is the nervous excitement during the headband ceremony waiting to see if your name is called. I get so excited
to tell my family and friends of the exciting news. They're so they're so exciting like they are with my older sister's high school activities. So, my name is Bane Clatt. I'm a senior at Central High School. I feel a little left out because I didn't wear my number ninja [laughter] >> Parker did say it was pretty lame that he forgot. [laughter] >> But, uh, no. So, I'm in charge of putting together a group of high school students every week to go to each number ninja meeting. I've been to I believe every one of them. >> I think so. Yeah. >> Every one of them so far. I love it. I mean, I'm pretty sure I love it more than any of these kids do. But I mean, I always liked math growing up. And so
when Carrie Cond told us about this number ninjas group that was like math counts starting at the elementary school, I jumped to that opportunity to be able to be in charge of that. And I think I think the I think it's good for the kids and the high schoolers as well. I mean, for the kids, it's more of a friendly face, you know, somebody who's also still in school, struggling like them, not uh and a little closer to their age kind of. [laughter] I mean, there there's one guy I brought a freshman with to one meeting who got recognized by one of the kids in number ninjas from when that kid was in kindergarten. So that's pretty crazy. But [laughter] yeah, I think the the people the high schoolers I bring, I think they love
it. And I love watching them interact with these kids and sit down one-on-one with them and teaching them how to do the math, going through them step by step. And I think it's really good for everyone involved. And I love it. They love it. I have people asking every week, I need to go back. Please let me go back. I want to see so and so, so and so. It's like, hold on, hold on. and I got to let other people [laughter] get a chance to, you know. So, I I just really love doing it and I think I think the kids do too, right, Parker? >> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] Parker loves me. [clears throat] So, >> and Ben just wanted to hang out with his fourth grade teacher more again. [laughter] >> This is
the only elementary school that's using high school mentors. I think >> we are. Yeah, >> that's great. Connect. We recommended that for them to call um you know contact like educators rising and other things to do that and we're hoping that somebody will want to kind of take that and do it next year and you are presenting about it at FBA, right? >> I am presenting about it at state FBA this year. So >> that's his project. I >> have to write a 10page report. [laughter] >> Don't forget your t-shirt. >> I won't I won't I forget my t-shirt. What if the kids maybe we've seen they have before, but I think we've seen a color tonight that we haven't seen. Can one of you step up and just explain the different colors and how
you get them? >> How do you get the different colors? >> Yeah. Maybe what are the colors you can get? >> So, how you get the different colors is in the beginning we do a one minute test and if you get all of the questions right and complete all of the questions, you move up a headband. So you start as with no belt and then you go to a white belt and then you move up to a black belt. And the white belt is like zeros and ones multiplication. Black belt is all the way up to 11s and 12. So when we're figuring out what to do now that we have some black belts, I think we're going to add some division. >> They don't know it yet. Well, >> they know it. [laughter] >>
So yeah. Any other questions? >> So how do you pick the tutors? I mean, >> uh, so I created a Google doc with a list of all the people who want to be involved. >> And then I keep track of who's been to what meeting and what and I mark that down and then I take precedence. So, whoever has been to the least amount of meetings will get to go to the next one over somebody who's already been. Okay. >> And there's about 15 16 different students from the high school wanted to be involved and have come. So, >> it's cool. >> It's really fun. >> So, it isn't like they're the top of your math classes, you know? >> No, no, no. [laughter] >> It's just uh the students in FBLA as well. >>
So, >> yeah. Who want to go? >> That's great. >> All right. Well, should [laughter] >> number ninjas. [laughter] >> Thank you. Thank you very much. Great job. [laughter] >> Thank you everybody for your time. Thanks for coming out on a cold evening. Uh you're more than welcome to stay with us. We're talking four new policies. Uh or you're free to go. Whatever you like [laughter] for coming. We were the fun part. [laughter] >> You guys ready? >> Okay. >> Thanks a lot. >> Thank you. >> Keep up the good work. >> Anything else? So you don't get confused. >> Yes, >> I was like that. >> I was going to ask questions. >> Yeah. Okay. Uh the next item on the agenda uh is the second reading of policy KEC-R. Uh this was a
policy that Mrs. Call brought forth. Um there was a legislative decision last year about bringing um decisions that the uh public was satisfied. they can go to the circuit court. So she's adding that language to this policy. >> I move second reading present floor by sharp second. >> Second by any further discussion related to policy KEC-R >> see none. All those in favor signify by saying >> I same sign. >> Okay. The next one is policy keed D-E. This is actually a new uh new form. We've always had the policy. We just never had a form and we're going through our accreditation process and they wanted us to have a form. So we're adding this form to the policy which has been in existence. >> I move second reading. >> I'll second a motion on
the floor by Olsson, second by Dr. Bortnham. Any further discussion related to policy keed- none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I post second. >> Thank you. The next is second reading of policy DJ, purchasing procedures. Michaela walked us through those changes last time. >> Move that we pass. >> A motion on the floor by Dr. Bortnham. >> Second by Sharp. Discussion related to policy DJ. See none. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. >> Same sign. >> Thank you. And we have the second reading of policy ECE, the authorized use of school district equipment and facilities. Mr. Cannel had just a some minor changes to this one as well. >> Second reading >> on the floor by Sharp. >> Second by Burkard. Any further discussion related to policy EC-
or ECE being none. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. I. I. >> Oppose. Same sign. Thank you. All right, we do need uh we do have need for uh executive session tonight under um state law SDCL 1-25-2. I ask for a motion to move into executive session. So move by Sharp, second by Olman. All those in favor
