We will call the January 12th Evering School Board meeting to order. We will begin with the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Roll call, please. >> Mr. Schulz here. >> Mr. Brad Olsson. [clears throat] >> Mr. Brian Sh. >> Darren Beckus >> presum Murphy >> here. >> All right. We are going to move around here just a little bit. So >> we can start with good news. >> We want to start with the good news items. >> Yep, that's fine. >> Okay. Uh we have good news items. So we will start with that, I guess. Well, not only do we have good news, we have perfect

news tonight. Perfectly good news tonight. We have u three individuals with us today that received a perfect score on their state assessment last spring. We have a fourth student as well. He was unable to uh join with us tonight, but we have three individuals who are here with us. Uh last year, Asher Schwan was a fourth grader at CC Lee and he got a perfect score on his math assessment. Porter Bindanogle is with us. He was a fifth grader at CC CC Lee last year. Uh he got a perfect score on his science test last year. Uh Oliver Buyers was an eighth grader at Holgate. He also received a perfect score on his science test. And the student not with us tonight is Gabe Sumner. He was an 11th grade student at Central uh and

also received a perfect score on his science test. So that's pretty amazing. Uh we've had a handful of these over the years. We've never had four in one year. So this is a very amazing news. If the three of you want to step up to the podium to the brown podium right there, um I'll have you introduce yourselves uh as you want to step forward. If there's any advice that you would like to give maybe other students, so maybe like what was a test like to take? Are there strategies that you use when you're a test taker? What did you maybe learn from your experience as a perfect test taker? Porter, thanks for stepping up. >> Hi, I'm Porter and like you can't think too hard about the test. You [snorts] just have to kind

of take it easy and you get stressed, take a step back and then come back in. >> So, what did you think? Like, did you have a good feeling like, "Hey, I think I got this." Or were you surprised when you got your results back? I >> was pretty surprised. [laughter] Okay, thank you. [laughter] >> Hi, my name is Ashley Schwan. I am a fifth grader at CC Elementary. It was uh pretty surprising to get 100% on my school. I don't have much information. I mean, not information, advice for other students, but just make sure you double check and take your time on your score, on your test. >> So, Asher, the math test is a little bit different than the science and the reading test, right? So, can you just talk us through like

what is the math test like? Are there some questions that are multiple choice? Are there some that you have to do a different way? Do you remember what the test was like for math? I think it's different than the other ones. >> I don't remember a lot. I just remember it asked you a question. >> Yeah. >> And then you had to pick all that apply, not just one answer. >> Yep. >> That's tricky. >> Very tricky. >> Yeah. >> Oliver buyers and here I was an eighth grader, freshman now at Central. Um, just don't think you can't do it. I mean, I was kind of surprised. I was just I got I got 100 >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> Did you guys know right away? >> Like how long? >> Days later. >> A

couple days later. Okay. I >> Okay. >> Questions. >> Guys, that's it's highly impressive considering in my students days as a student, you'd had to double my score to get a [laughter] I'm very impressed. Yeah. >> Do you feel you studied for them at all >> or it's just what you're learning in the classroom? >> I didn't study. [laughter] >> I just kind of used what I learned in the classroom and how to apply that. >> Okay. >> I did not study. [laughter] >> Would you consider these to be your strong areas where you did so well? I mean, as far as all the subjects you take? >> Yes, >> A LITTLE BIT. >> [laughter] >> SO, OBVIOUSLY YOU GUYS ARE ACADEMICALLY very gifted. What else are you guys involved with? >> Um, I do

swim and baseball and that's it. >> I do swim and taekwondo and that's it. >> Okay. >> I do baseball, track, I did basketball last year and yeah, I think that's and golf. Well, it certainly sounds like you're wellrounded, too. It's just not just the books. It's exercise and, uh, being involved with with other activities. And so, uh, um, congratulations on the the perfect scores. That's very impressive. >> I think Mrs. Call she gave those to you or not, but do we have a very You have those? She does. Mrs. Call has a letter for you from the Secretary of Education, Dr. Graves, wrote you a very nice congratulations letter. So, make sure you grab that for Mrs. Call. But, uh, we are very proud of you. This is a great accomplishment. Um, hope we

see you back again next year. We can have the same conversation. But, we just wanted to acknowledge, uh, your efforts and to thank you for being great Golden Eagles and supporters. And, um, we wish you all the very best. So, congratulations. >> Congratulations. >> YES. [applause] >> You are free to go. [laughter] >> You want to stay? You want to stay for a while? >> Asher. Asher, are you staying with Mr. Osborne? Is he helping Mr. Osborne tonight? >> Oh, are we supposed to? >> We can stay. He's on his He's on his way, so thank you. >> I tried to get you OUT OF HERE. [laughter] >> YOU couldn't get up close. >> There's a train, so he's on his way. So we may move things around a little bit, but he's coming to

give us the report. So >> all right. Uh we do have the agenda in front of us. I'd ask for a motion for approval tonight. >> So moved. >> Moved by Dr. Borton. I'm second by Murphy. >> All those in favor of tonight's agenda signify by saying I. >> I. Same sign. >> M to address the board. >> Board remarks. I went to the shower the night when they were presenting before they went and it was so exciting to see, you know, all those students that are working so hard and the teachers that were going with them all a 24-hour day on Saturday. I just I just have to say we have to be proud of all of them, too. It's really great. >> I got to see the show choir preview. They came here

before Christmas break and they were just doing it's for the middle school kids. So I got to see the preview to the preview. Uh it's fascinating. Um if you haven't seen the show, the students, the varsity show choir this year is doing a tribute to the 125th anniversary of storybook land. Uh so it's all themed around storybook land. Um and it's it's fascinating. There's some original songs that's part of the choreography this year and [clears throat] the costumes and things are just truly out. So, they're just getting started. This last weekend was their first >> first show. So, >> yeah. >> And they did very well. >> Yes, they did. They sure did. They did. >> Any further board remarks? >> Seeing none, we will move on to the approval of minutes from December 8th,

for a motion for approval. Motion by Sharp. Second, second by Beckus. Any further discussion related to the minutes? See? None. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. >> Oppos. Same sign. >> Thank you. We have a rather lengthy consent agenda with a number of great items on there. Um, does anybody want anything pulled before? If not, I would ask for approval of or a motion for approval on the agenda. No second by Dr. Bortonham. Any further discussion related to the uh consent agenda. >> Just want to say thank you. Uh there's a great uh uh listening of donations that are helping the Aine public school and uh we're very proud of their partnership with us. So with that, I will ask for all those in favor signify by saying I for tonight's consent

agenda. I same sign. Thank you. Next we have the uh reports of the superintendent. Dr. Guffin. >> Thank you. Before I begin with uh the reports, I just wanted to make an announcement for the public. Uh we have one of the most exciting events coming up with the school year in my opinion. Uh we have kindergarten registration day coming up on Monday. So a week from today, Monday, January 19th, uh we will be registering our newest Golden Eagles from 2 until 6 p.m. at Simmons Middle School. uh there's an opportunity to get registered and then we do a little screening and it's a really great opportunity to welcome our newest um students to the district. So that'll take place next Monday. Looking forward to that. Uh we're going to move a couple things around on

the agenda tonight. So the first item that we'll take a look at is our special education child count. Um Miss Wilson is here to report about our special ed numbers for this school year. count is uh one year every year we do a count of all the students who are in special education and the day to date is always December 1st. So this year our special ed numbers look a lot like they have in the last few years. We have a total of 979 students that we serve with disabilities in the district. And the probably the notable things are that autism and emotional disability continue to be the categories that are increasing. Other than that, most of our numbers look almost exactly like they did last year. >> Questions or comments? >> How many uh

require an out of district placement? Do you have any on the >> We do have some and it it depends on the type of out of district placement. We have some of a couple students who have some pretty severe disabilities who need more of like adaptive daily living type things. We have two or three of those. And then um some of our emotional disabilities where they have some behavioral needs. We have a few more of those. Probably about 10. >> Other questions or comments? I just want to say thank you because obviously this is a growing department and under your leadership I I know that you do a great job with the the program and want to thank all the teachers and EAS that help with this. It's a a challenge and um I've heard

numerous times the great teaching that happens in in this particular area. So I wanted to thank you for that. [snorts] >> Okay. The next item on our agenda is the first reading in policy revision KEC-R and Mrs. Call has some changes to that. Good evening. >> Good evening. >> All right. So, policy KEC-R which is reconsideration of materials. So, under the appeal section, we added one small statement to reflect some qualified law 13-46. And what this allows is the complaintant can file an appeal with the circuit court once they've uh appealed the school board. So that's one addition. [clears throat and cough] >> All right. Any questions regarding the uh change? I move first reading. Okay. We have a motion on the floor for first reading of KEC-R. Is there a second? Any further discussion

related to uh the policy change? See none. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. >> Thank you. >> All right. My next policy approved. This is actually new policy and this is for uh KE- K-E that's tongue twister. Complaints regarding federal programs. We have a policy for that but we just don't have a form and so we're adding that. So there is an officially a form to go along with that complaint process. Any questions? So we have KD K form first reading of KE-. >> Okay. We have a motion on the floor. Is there a second? >> I'll second. >> Second. Any further discussion related to policy keed-. All right. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. Same sign. Okay. >> Okay. The next is uh the first reading of

policy DJ which are purchasing procedures change in the law that you can talk about. So the federal thresholds for micro purchases increased from 10,000 to 15,000 and then simplified acquisitions increased from 250,000 to 350,000. They update these every so often just to maintain the original intent of the thresholds um due to inflation and to offer more opportunities to small businesses. There is a statutory requirement to [clears throat] this every 5 years. Um and while I was at it, I just updated some wording just to make it easier to follow, mostly grammar. >> First reading, DJ. All right, we have a motion on the floor. Is there a second? >> Second by this. Any further discussion related to this? >> And as you said, this just relates back to the codified law that uh mandating this

as well. >> Do do you get uh do you have to go to training or are there online things to keep up with changes in the law? I mean, do you >> I do. Yep. Um they'll send an email out for updates to these thresholds. ASBSD does a really nice job with >> Okay, I was wondering stay up on all this. >> We obviously stay in tune to things that are happen with legislative things. Sometimes things like this that are law changes not related to the state sometimes are a little more difficult to track, but SPSD does a nice job that too. >> Any further discussion? None. All those in favor of policy DJ signify by saying I. >> Same sign. >> The next one is policyce. I think Mr. Schnell has just a few

changes on that one. >> Change. [clears throat] Yeah, there's uh really a really really really minor change. Um just uh some wordage we removed uh in that uh sec third or fourth uh paragraph use of gymnasium the weight training equipment that paragraph we've just deleted the building principle and that's going to be just for the director of operations approval on that. And then also the next paragraph down, same thing. Just deleting that to make that all run through one person rather than 10 question. >> Were there issues that created the change or just inconsistencies or >> you know in the past we've had more issues than we have recently. I know that uh the district has gone to this new FMX software where you can you can reserve areas of the district. That seems to

have helped quite a bit. Um you know, everybody wants to take a shortcut. Uh we want to make sure with this that all of the insurance forms are in place and all the proper uh information has been passed along. But on that end, they if I'm looking to reserve a gymnasium or something, I still can talk to my principal and then it would filter up to you. Essentially, you'd be the only sign off [clears throat] on that. >> A lot of times what they'll do is say, "Please uh please go to the district uh website because you can apply to be a requesttor there." >> Sure. >> It's a pretty simple process. um you know depending on whether you're nonprofit, school-based, you know, there's different categories in there, but but yeah, it is it's easier

for one or two people. Um I know Laura Braun and myself or excuse me, Laura Warner [laughter] and myself kind of take all those calls. Uh and so two people it's easier to to remember the rules than everybody else in the building. So like I say, funneling it into a central point. >> Any other questions? >> I move first reading of policy ECE. >> All right, we have a motion on the floor. Is there a second? >> Second. Motion on the floor and second. Any further discussion related to policy ECE? None. [snorts] All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. Thank you. Okay. Uh, at a previous meeting, we did approve our next election date, but we do have an updated election agreement, and Michaela will present that for approval. >> Yes. So,

you may notice the agreement looks a little different than last year's, and that was just due to some things she had to add in based on last legislative session. Some changes in law there. Um, but our responsibilities in the terms are consistent last year. So, we'll combine with the city and county on the June 2nd ballot. Any questions or comments? >> I vote that we >> Oh, I say most school districts have gone with the June. Uh, >> yes. >> Okay, that's wonder statewide. >> So, I vote that we approve the combined election agreement. >> We have a motion on the floor for the combined election agreement. Is there a second? >> Second by Burker. Any further discussion related? >> All those in favor signify by saying I. Hi. >> Same time. Thank you. >>

Okay. Uh the next item on our agenda is the uh CCLE elementary school report to the board. Mr. Osborne is here with some guests. >> Good evening. How are you? >> How are you? >> Good. >> Sorry, I think I got the time messed up and [laughter] I need to apologize for that. So, thanks for coming in or thanks for having us. I think you've already met Asher. >> We have. Asher is going to present or not present but come and stand with us in just a little bit. Um, two big things that we have going on this year at CC Lee. Uh, we've started something called Soore to Read. So at 9:05, uh, we use our UFly curriculum and we've started to break our kids down into where they're at. So we can progress

monitor and follow the kids throughout um their learning and we we're we're monitoring them so closely that we can tell whether they need to go back in the program or keep moving ahead. So at 9:05 kind of fun I've had Dr. guffing up at 9:05. There's an eagle screeching and that alerts the kids that they get up out of their desks at that time and they will go and move to their small group and we go over our UFly uh curriculum at their level. So what that entails is a phmic awareness section, a phonic instruction, they apply their phonics, so they're reading, then they're encoding, which is spelling, and including in that or included in that is a sentence piece where they might be the teacher will give them a sentence and the kids practice

writing everything down >> and there's a quick review. So this all happens within 25 minutes. So you can kind of guess with all those things, five minutes about each one of those chunks of things happens. So the kids are constantly and engaged through something. They're moving. They're doing something. If you can see if you can see on the pictures that I've sent, they're carrying little trays and those have letters on them. So they're they they are able to manipulate the letters and sounds that entire time. They can also remove that and they can write on those boards. So multi-purpose right there. Um a lot of the times the groups are anywhere between nine 15 kids in a group. Um we progress monitor like I said. So every six weeks a lot of times they're moving

on either up a group or sometimes like we have had kids fall back just so that we can kind of catch and make sure that their foundation is solid for their reading program. So, um, like I said, six weeks we progress monitor and those we've even started reading groups. Some of our kids were getting almost too far for where we wanted them to. So, we've kind of pushed them back. They're working. We're kind trying to expand uh their first and second grade reading levels. Um, we're not trying to build them up too high so that first graders are reading second and third grade levels. We're trying to expand it so that they're getting it really deep [clears throat] on that in those levels. So, um, we've got a first grade reading group already started and

second grade where they're working comprehension and they're working fluency to continue to build their reading skills. So, it's a really fun program that that we have going on right now. The kids are engaged. They love it. They feel like they're at high school because they get to move and go to a different class. Um the teachers aren't with them making them go in line. Um Dr. Guffin was up there the day we were kind of early in it. I think we just started some kindergarten. So it was a little more chaotic then. But um but it wasn't bad. But we're still getting them. They're they can transition though within a minute or two to their class. They know right where to go. It doesn't we don't waste a lot of time and they're they're busy

with with their lessons. So, um, we're really happy and pleased with the successes we're seeing right now with that program. Um, then we have something that I'm really excited about, our number ninjas. I have a couple of ninjas here today with us. Um, they're focused on their multiplication facts. So, that's the first thing. Well, the first thing they do is have a snack. [laughter] So, about the first 10 minutes or so is snack time. Um then we meet every Thursday and the kids after they have their snack >> they will get their um map fact sheet and they will be told they have one minute and they have to get 40 answers correct. Um and it's kind of fun. I I love walking through there. You can see the competitiveness in their faces. They're they're

really waiting to get these and see if they can answer all 40 of these questions. Um, we meet currently and there is one competition left. We started a little late because my coaches happen to be a soccer coach and a volleyball coach. So, we started a little late and we were going twice a week to kind of catch up and we missed our first competition, but we'll be ready to go for that second one that comes up this spring. Um, we have 60 kids that joined this year. Three teachers and a volunteer have come in to help break those groups. So, you can kind of tell we got about 15 kids in a group u that are working. Um, and I've asked the kids a lot like how does it feel? What do you feel

when like when we do those times tests cuz um it's kind of fun. was kind of nervous, but uh I'm just trying to beat that clock. I like So they they're kind of getting into that that part of, you know, sometimes you do have deadlines. We do have time limits. We do have time crunches. Um and they're enjoying it. So some other things that they love to do is we connect collect magnets. We make a color magnet that the kids can put on their lockers and kind of show as they're they're advancing. And of course, you can see we have her headbands here. Um, one student even said he loves going to the groups because they're learning something that maybe I didn't know before, a strategy or some way to figure a problem out. So,

they're really enjoying that. Um, I'd like to introduce a few ninjas here. Uh, I did have the colors on here according to what they were, but we had some kids pass on. So, Asher, Avery, Jace, and Riker are here. And I think most of their belts are correct. They're on their head now. So I'll let them come up and tell us what they enjoy or what they are. What what's going on with our number ninja? Asher, you want to start? [laughter] >> I really enjoy that. Numbo ninjas is uh I can't think. [laughter] >> It's a fun way to learn your math facts, but it also challenges you because you want to be like it's kind of in the competitive part of walk. [laughter] >> Yeah, I don't really know what to say. It's competitive.

You're just trying to beat your friends. [laughter] >> Yeah. It's fun. >> You like it? Right. [clears throat] [laughter] >> Go. >> I like number ninjas because it challenges us to get 40 questions right in just one minute. And it's fun because we get to kind of try and beat the belt, but get all the way to like the last bell before our friends. >> Do you practice at home? >> Yes. >> No. [laughter] >> I think you should keep trying. >> Yeah. [laughter] My name is Avery and I'm in fourth grade at CC Lee. Number ninjas helps me practice math in a fun way to reach my goals. I also feel proud of myself because I just mastered purple belt. There are nine belts and I've achieved six of them. Number ninjas is one

of the funnest things at CC. >> Hi, my name is Riker. I'm in fourth grade at CC Lee. I've earned my blue belt by practicing my math every week. I enjoy number ninjas because it gives me a fun way to learn new math skills and improving my math. >> Avery, do you know all the what all the belts are? Do you know all the colors? >> Yeah. >> Yes, we just did it before. >> No, there's still a few more colors. >> Like where did what color do you start with? What What color do kids start with? >> What color? >> White. Okay. And then what's next? >> Yellow, then orange, then green, then blue, then purple, then red, then brown, then black. >> Woo! Okay. >> Yeah, I knew someone would know. [laughter] >>

Do you practice at home with your parents? >> Do you eat them? [laughter] >> [laughter] >> up in the belt. Do the I assume the problems get harder. >> Yeah. >> So, blue, what was the number? What were you guys multiplying by? >> It was to get blue, it was time four, but to get the next spell, it's time six. >> Six. Yeah. >> Purple is sixes, right? >> Yes. And then after the sixes is seven. >> And then is it 8 n 8 n and then the last one is 11 and 12. >> So >> the twelves are included in and I think the 11s are they they do include one. So but it's from what we've seen is that uh when you get into those bigger digits if you miss one digit up

and you stop to erase that's going to cost your test. Oh, >> so these kids have really been working hard to make sure that they know them and it's just fluent as they're going through. >> Yeah. >> So, when I was little, most of the kids I remember in my class would say they hated math and they weren't good at math. Do you think if we would have had ninjas that that would have changed our opinion about it? >> Probably. [laughter] Are there kids that still don't take part because they're scared or that they don't think they can do as well? >> Probably. >> Yeah. And and we we are seeing kids not always pass every every week. Um there's some that are kind of still sitting on the bottom because they're still working on

how fast >> Sure. >> they're riding. So, um but they're still coming back and they're showing up and they enjoy that camaraderie [clears throat] and it's kind of fun watching the kids cheer each other on when they do pass. So, >> perseverance has been key. >> Yeah, >> and they enjoy taking the pictures. If you can see some of the pictures um that you see, [laughter] they're really enjoying and having a good time um with it. So, and the coaches really help keep it upbeat for the kids, too. So, um, and a lot of the things, you know, we're we're really trying to teach not just the number of facts, but being determined, resilient. Um, you know, we haven't passed every test, I don't think, every week. So, coming back and working hard for that

next week to try to to pass it. It's really helped pay off. I can really see the the resilience really showing in the kids. Um, like I said, cheering each other on. That's that's a neat thing to do when when you see that. So yeah, >> Asher, do you like to compete? >> Yes, I'm very competitive. [laughter] >> Was your father years ago? You come by that. [laughter] Well, you guys should all be commended as well because uh if you'd asked me in elementary school if I wanted to stay after and work on math problems, [laughter] I know exactly what my answer is. Uh continue to to do great stuff. This is awesome. Congratulations on [clears throat] you're doing. >> These will be the kids that sell it, I think, to the next group, the

kids coming up even next year. So, >> I make a couple of comments. So, I to Mr. Osburn's point have watched both of these things. So board members, if you need something to do at 905, I would highly encourage you to go to CC Lee. Actually, all the schools are doing this, but I CC Lee was the first one I visited, and I was there to hear the eagle screech, which by the way is fascinating. [laughter] Um, I was very impressed. We're talking about 5-year-olds who hear a sound, stop what they're doing, get up, know exactly what supplies they need, [cough] and then go to some very, very detailed instruction to their level with reading. And we have kindergarteners going to second grade rooms. I mean, there's just it's the the fluidness of the groups

is really, really fun to watch. We had some kindergarten students very early in the year um going to some pretty advanced groups, which was kind of fun to watch. Um I have been to every single competitive event this district offers, from track meets to show choir events to anything you could think of that's competitive. Uh the most competitive and enthusiastic event I have ever attended in my 35 years here is the number ninjas competition. I have not seen um as much enthusiasm as I did that day. Um the math problems I thought were very challenging. Uh the kids were digging in and going after it. There was screeching and hollering and true love for learning. It was fun. So the next time we have a a number ninja, we'll have to invite the board because

it's it is that fun to watch. >> Yeah. So two really great things going on. >> We'd love to see you guys up at the >> that next competition. >> And also all the teachers that are supporting these activities, you know, whether it's the reading >> and the math ninjas, that's the math ninjas is extra. So we appreciate that so much cuz it's your excitement too that gets them going >> in and our sorter read. I will say that we've they've all embraced it in our my K2 and we have almost 15 groups that get split up and the kids to know where they're going. It it's been an amazing venture that we've gone on and and the teachers are loving it and the kids are loving it. So >> that's great. >> It's support

staff that are helping in some roles. Maybe we have some nonclassroom teachers e teacher, the music teacher is helping with some things. The instruction is very direct, but um it's a welloiled machine. It's super fun. It's awesome. >> That's great. >> Great job. Keep it up. >> Casc. >> Yes. Thank you very much for coming. We appreciate hearing you guys. Good job. >> All right. I believe that's everything on our agenda for tonight. Move we got the emotion motion. We have a [laughter] motion more. >> How's that? >> There we go. [laughter] We have a motion on the floor. Do we have a second? >> Who wants to follow that? >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> We are ajourned. Thank you so much. Motional motion. Motional motion. area.
