see can I have a motion to resume public session can I have a motion please miss littlewood Mr long any questions all in favor the vote is unanimous we're now back in public session please stand for the pledge I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands a nation under God indivisible liberty and justice for all all right we get to begin then with our GC Pride Awards good evening superintendent Dy president coffee and the rest of the Board of Education tonight I wanted to recognize two outstanding leaders that Gat chil has Marissa Hira and Lea Godwin this year I've had the absolute pleasure of working with them closely as they help the high school by being our building and District district Equity team

members both teams take a tremendous amount of time and dedication and they volunteer all of this time outside of their classes Marissa and Laya are also heavily participant heavy participants in the Rock to change last year when this event was hosted at Gates CH Marissa and Lila helped lead the work with the rest of the members as well as the teachers to make sure it was a huge success more impressively I want to highlight their New York State education webinar titled elevating student voices that they heavily participated in this webinar was a Q&A format that had superintendents and state level educational leaders asking them multitude of questions over 600 people from across the state listened in on the work they've been accomplishing here at the high school in across Monro County Marissa and Lea spoke

eloquently and were extremely insightful in their responses along with that with what I just mentioned they are both heavily involved in a mult in multiple clubs activities for the school and hold themselves to the highest of academic standards and are overall just amazing students they are leaders among leaders gase CH is extremely proud of the both of you and thank you for all that you do thank you and congratulations you guys good evening good evening president coffee uh superintendent Dy and vice president Dr Richards um this evening it is my honor to present the GC Pride award um to several students tonight I'm pleased uh to present this award to a very special group of High School Spartans when I call your name please come and join me beside the podium um and Mr Hamill

is going to help in handing out certificates elely Alstrom Joe Garcia Madison feifer jayen Ridgeway and uh those who could not be here this evening Brianna Smith Dilo Caleb wall and Jonathan Vance as you all know one Focus area of our strategic plan for Equity is centered on recruitment hiring and retention from historically underrepresented groups in order to achieve a balanced rep representation of faculty and staff that is in line with our student population over the past several years we've shared action items that we've taken to remove bias and barriers from our hiring practices and procedures it brings me much GC Pride to share that an extraordinary group of of students helped to bring to life another key strategy to support these goals in the summer of 2022 we myself Dr Vasquez and Mrs Petrino

began planning for the creation of a training video for staff that would provide an overview of our interviewing process and make staff aware of the types of implicit or unconscious bias that present themselves during the interview process like many of our other trainings this video would be would come to be mandated for anyone wishing to serve on an interview committee anytime you make a video you run the risk of it becoming outdated as soon as it's completed so we tried to think outside of the box and decided on an animated video for this training thankfully this amazing group of students enthusiastically took on voiceover roles for characters in that video they played an integral integral role in bringing those characters to life after a full year of research planning and production the finished product product

Deb viewed this past summer and we began using it to train staff this summer and fall this real world production experience is having a real impact on our district already this year approximately 90 staff members have taken part in this training above all we are most grateful to these students for their participation their contributions to this video will have a long lasting Legacy for many years to come on the betterment of our district we would also like like to acknowledge those students who participated in this video as seniors and have since graduated MAA Moses Brian nce brener Jaden R rigan Mayer ran and Elias Stewart again thank you to all of these students for their professionalism dedication and commitment to Gates Chilai and helping us create a welcoming and inclusive environment for staff students and

families thank you all thank you all of you all right that moves us on to agenda changes we have changes to Personnel some updates thank you so tonight for board president comments I wanted to take just a minute to recognize all of our students who are here and their families that are here with them and all the hard work they've done to support our district we appreciate all of you nice Smiles guys we're also approaching a season full of Winter band and chorus concerts or winter sports and full swing lots of activities going on for our community for our families to get to see and support and to see all the hard work of our students and staff so thank you for all that and we're excited to get to see everybody and all the

hard work they've done we also have some upcoming things going on in our schools to support students in other ways and to support the community in other ways we have our NHS induction ceremony coming up we have at one of our elementary schools their craft show coming up so lots of things fundraisers really trying to make sure that our students have the opportunities that we would love for them to have and just taking a second to recognize that these next four weeks as we approach the winter holidays that there are so many different holidays and celebration that our students and families have in their lives some are the same as each other some are very different from each other and recognizing how important each of those traditions and holidays are and that our district is

taking a lot of time and effort to really make sure that a safe space for people to have those holidays and traditions and be able to share them and recognizing that this is a time of excitement but also a time of stress for people and just making sure that we're aware of each other as we go through these next few weeks that moves us forward to points of interest do we have any points of interest to share Miss kais just before the holiday um intended Finding Nemo at the middle school um which was I can't remember if we talked about this already at our last staff meeting or or board meeting or not but that's okay um great production kids worked really hard on putting that on again it seemed to be um very well

received by the Community a lot of tickets sold I think they sold more tickets Katie might be able to answer that than they typically sell the musical so it was really nice seeing we sold more tickets than we had printed so yes all right well then congratulations everyone that sounds wonderful any other points of interest okay thank you guys that moves us on to our report of meetings do we have any reports of meetings none okay do we have any visitor comments no all right that moves us on to our high school update we moved quickly hi everyone uh thank you for having us here tonight uh to do a high school update I feel like I broke that um and share with all the great things that we have going on at the high

school as the students just shared with us as well shs t-- before or after class in the orange Hall welcome back SP I with some sports upes tonight so as you can tell our morning announcements are completely different like we've never done uh before uh Mrs Parchman our 12th grade uh assistant principal came in uh in June and that was one of her first initiatives she did a lot of work using a program called canva uh to make this happen for us and it's pretty outstanding to watch in the morning uh typically traditional announcements students are fully engaged and listening they may miss some things it's pretty awesome to watch down walk down the hallways now and you see students fully engaged watching the announcements everybody's showing them and then these are live for uh

uh faculty and staff to see throughout the day families to see as they're posted on our website as well so it's really more engaging um for staff and then the uh or for students excuse me and then um uh the process of doing it we're looking at doing it live eventually but right now a lot of these students are making these recordings at home submitting them through canvas so that uh Mrs parment can form inform them so it is a lot of work on the back end but it's been pretty awesome to see during uh so far the school year um High School updates via s'more newsletter so two initiatives that we started this year was the Spartan scoop it's a monthly newsletter that is sent home uh or sent via text and email to

families 9 through2 uh what's nice about it is has lots of different sections for the fam so there's a section pertaining to the junior class senior class freshman class and sophomore class there's a a counseling section and other uh districtwide updates as well has access to uh other social media U websites and as well as our athletic um schedules as well so it's uh once a month first of every month one goes out our December issue is going to be coming out uh this Friday uh in terms of communicating with with staff we have our weekly update again using s'more uh it's just a nice way that I I start the week off informing our staff of what you know anything that's going on so it's got three major sections it's a got a need

to know section so information about important things we need to remind to do submitting things on time grades when they're opening and closing so on and so forth uh there's another section about what's coming up this week so if Tuesday's a faculty meeting if Wednesday's a musical or band or chorus concert Friday is the pep assembly whatever it may be and then the last section is a uh weekly motiv ational quote that I usually find a picture of or some sort that we share out so at the start of the school year we always start off with our freshman orientation uh we had two uh sessions for families to attend and this is always led by our peer leaders we have a tremendous uh group of students that lead these students uh through both sessions

for a tour throughout the building after a pretty short and sweet presentation um from our from two of our counselors uh is very very well attended I feel like this year and I feel like we're getting better and more efficient at it as we continue to to make some changes um our opening day presentations these were formerly known as our code of conduct meetings and we felt as a team talking about making them more welcoming as opening day presentations we didn't want to just harp on the code of conduct we talked about any changes new to the school year um minor things that might have changed reminders updates um you know uh the schedules that might have changed so on and so forth openhouse this year slightly different format in the past it has been

uh families come in and they follow their students uh Bell schedules so they come in and we start at 6:30 they go to first period they sit for 5 minutes 10 minutes the teachers talk and then they rotate around uh what we found was it was pretty tough if you had two students in the high school you know which schedule do you find and if you're a single family or whatever it may be or if you're coming late from across town out of work where do I start where what class do I start following so we made this more of an open form and um we already got some feedback and we're going to make some tweaks for next year about uh just just making sure that parents have their schedule their students schedules making

sure there's more maps available and also making sure we have more uh student volunteers this past year we had uh NHS helping us as well with that and then uh another big push we have for the start of the school year and we'll be continuing is a lot more virtual tours in our career center um there's a picture right here of North Carolina agricultural um technical State University where it was a virtual tour students come in sign up for an opportunity to come and do a virtual tour that's for this place you know colleges and universities that are typically outside of state that they may not have access to uh so this was our first one that we had back in October and we have a couple more coming up and our um career center

liaison uh Lori Robinson will be continuing to reach out to colleges and universities to bring more of those to our career center so what else is going on at the high school so we have a phenomenal Club known as our service Club um this year there are two new advisers so it's the same community support but they're looking to do more with it so uh huge tradition is the Thanksgiving uh meal giveaway that we just completed successfully servicing over 30 families and then we have uh our Christmas uh gift um process that we'll be going through as well so uh supporting the community in that way the new advisers however want to make it bigger than that and reach out more to local uh not for not for-profit organizations bring them in as guest speakers

and give students more of an opportunity to reach out to the community and support the community in a larger sense uh we're kicking off a new gchs rights unit uh so last year we did gchs read where there was a book uh that the entire for for the most part A lot of the students in the building read together uh this year is gchs reads it will be a flash fiction contest of no more than 150 words and there's already been a huge amount of students participating in that as well and looking forward for next year uh we will be looking at some Senior English opportunities so moving away from the traditional English 12 cense we'll still be offering our AP um laying AP Lit and um Humanities courses but looking at halfe courses to

still make up that full English 12 credit for next year a lot of schools are moving to this this just gives a lot more variety and options for students that may have an interest in a certain area of English and literature some more high school highlights uh working with monor County Schools including Fairport Rush Henrietta University of uh prep um from March 25th to 27th we'll be doing an HBCU uh tour that includes a tour of the city of Philadelphia um and a number of universities uh that are listed there as well um this is going to be a great opportunity again to get students to go check out places they may not feasibly be able to see um we are anticipating a high number of students looking into this it's only going to be

offered for the junior class right now because it is in the late spring seniors for the most part have chosen where they're going to be going for the following year and sophomore still have some time to decide what they may be doing so we're just offering this for junior class right now um there will probably have to be an application process that we'll have to go through to make sure that the right students are going for the right reasons uh when when taking a large group of students on this process high school highlight so we have an outstanding AIS uh department and one of our um senses of Pride we have is our Hub and the hub for those you don't that don't know is an opportunity for students to go and visit um additional

support during a study hall or during lunches or even after school or before school if needed um it's very much like a college setting so they're able to come in and like yep I need help in my Global or oh I need help in my math and teachers are able to support them and guide them to the best of their abilities um it's not available every period but we are constantly making adjustments to make sure we can uh support the most amount of students as possible um some feedback from the that department they're averaging about 300 students per month that are coming in and getting additional support outside of their traditional classroom so we're seeing a an increase uh from pre previous years um many students that are new to G Gates CH are finding

huge success with this and uh going down there frequently if you actually go down during uh the lunch times you'll see um it absolutely just packed in there with the support of Jamie wah Berger who's uh fantastic with the algebra classes and kids are getting a ton of support out of her uh for our counseling department uh the senior uh parent night and guardian night were huge success well attended with over 100 people attending uh the uh senior and parent Guardian night and then over 7 people attending the financial aid night uh the financial aid night was a huge success um because it was more or less a one-on-one with um Brockport State uh advisor coming in and talking to families about things to look out for as they're preparing their their child for uh

the financial piece of college and then um W Moko tour will be uh coming up in the next couple weeks and we already have over 100 students that are interested in touring the facility and looking at all the different offerings that woko has uh intro education is formerly known as uh future educ Educators Club is a club that we began last year uh where students have the opportunity to go and Shadow a teacher of a specific content area of their choice uh once a month throughout the entire school year so last year we had about six students this year we're upwards of 12 and there are still students hearing about it wanting to join um so right now we currently have students going out to the High School Middle School Florence brass or Neil Armstrong's

and uh after each visit it the students are building on their experiences so for the first uh visit which was in November they were literally just shadowing the teacher um this upcoming session they will be doing some sort of all about me presentation so getting them more comfortable in front of uh the students and just you know presenting to students about themselves and then as they um continue the school year they'll be doing more and more uh maybe a mini lesson on a certain topic or uh the teacher can challenge them with something to teach and present to the students as well and then with this we'll be offering seminars so we might be bringing in guest speakers um we'd like to look into some sort of trip to maybe St John Fischer or Nazareth

uh just to continue to build on this as well and then uh from one of the previous slides this would be eventually a course we'd like to offer for half year to meet the English 12 um credits so our building Equity team this year um we had a huge turnout uh when I asked student the student body who would be interested in it uh a tremendous turnout and our our ultimate goal for the building Equity team is to increase and understanding and knowledge of diversity equity and inclusion for students and staff uh we decided as a team that education is our most powerful tool that we have so we figured let's try to get students and staff to learn more about how to be uh more accepting of other cultures races and ethnicity so um

our next slide shows what kind of what we did in a nutshell after our first session students broke into different groups and we came up with actionable items on what we can try to accomplish you know students wanted to do lots of things that were kind of out of the element like add more bathrooms add more this build more these you know but when we were talking about things that are actionable that we could Implement within the first couple months of this team this was a pretty extensive list that students came up with uh we have our next meeting tomorrow where we're really going to start funneling these down coming up with action steps to start uh addressing one or two of these major items that are coming up from our building Equity team uh

one of our uh one of my more prideful uh groups of students that we have as our peer leaders as I I mentioned earlier this is a group of students that uh take a dual credit course here in the high school and do some amazing things uh about with leadership and most recently they did a kindness day on November 13th uh students actually had to present to me uh they were in groups of three or four they had to present to me different ideas of how they were going to share and spread kindness uh throughout the high school so some of the ideas they had were making kindness bracelets uh origami hearts on all of the lockers so when you walk down the blue hallway it's literally every single Locker had an origami heart on

it with some sort of very very sweet and nice saying and then um you know some um another group made buttons and much more and then one group went very much above and beyond and made a mural um that was beautiful it's right outside of our high school library uh they did this in a pretty short amount of time I believe actually a freshman designed um this mural and they just finished it uh I think just the I think they actually had to come in the Saturday before kindness day to finish it to make sure it was ready to go for kindness day so this year at the high school we are working towards embracing artificial intelligence uh there is a lot of negativity out there about it but the high school is doing a

great job with embracing it so recently I observed a lesson it's a coau l lesson between our librarian uh Angelina Brody and one of our high school English teachers Annie Rosario and the students were doing a um a narrative of some sort and they need to create a cover so uh Angelina Brody came in and showed students uh the use of canva and with the use of canva there is an AI feature in there where you can type in a prompt and it will come up so instead of sitting there Googling stuff trying to find the right picture whatever else this was a prompt that a student typed into their computer um through canva and obviously the longer the prompt and the more details you add to it the more specific you'll get and within

a matter of seconds it spit out these different images that students were then able to use as their cover for their narrative that they wrote um it does have a nice feature where if you know a believe the student actually had to make a change to this they added like with the Nike sign and it caught that this could be a um um a copyright type thing infringement so it canva caught that said please remove the board Nike they retyped it and it came up with these awesome images instead of trying to Google a purple soccer cleat that's on fire they were able to type all these uh descriptive things into the AI software built in canva and come up with an awesome image for their um narrative so just some nice pictures of uh

programs and things we have going on in the high school this is a construction systems uh class uh students are are um building frames and all sorts of things um the center picture is uh a group of students that went to our Rock to change student Summit that was held just a few weeks ago at woko or excuse me at Bose 2 Center and then to the right is one of our was one of our first uh senior events it's our senior Sunrise so was uh probably close to 120 students were at this event they all get together on the turf they watch the sunrise have it's a really really cool event um and then of course I do want to highlight our Powderpuff uh cheerleaders this is always the highlight of Spirit Week in

a lot of ways for our sta for our students and they did a really nice job performing as well any questions I have one quick question um for the students that are going into the different classrooms throughout the year okay how did did the teachers volunteer at different buildings how did you guys build those connections yep so what I did was uh back in probably May of La of last school year I emailed um each building and said you know I described what intro education was here's the opportunities please just fill out this Microsoft form if you interested in hosting a student and please share with me you know your name what building and what you teach so then what we do with that is we have the students that are interested felt a very

similar form and then we just match them so if a student wants to work in an elementary building we all right we have a third grade teacher at Neil Armstrong boom here's a third grade teacher um or a teacher or student that wants to work with elementary students uh we had a couple students that wanted to work with art teachers so we paired them up so again just trying to make sure make sure they're pairing up but we had I think I had close to 40 teachers volunteer districtwide um interested in doing this and then we just try to make the best pairs uh we also have to take into consideration some of these students don't necessarily have the the traveling capabilities to travel to those other buildings so last year we really just made

it in the high school and the middle school and then we're continuing toing Branch out as soon as have that opportunity to travel thank you any other questions thank you so much okay thanks for everything have a great night all right that moves us on to our student ex officio update good evening everyone um I would like to bring up some of the things that we've talked about um mostly towards the school and some things that we are going on like that's really going on the high school so far so throughout my senior year um I've been noticing there's a lot of goods and bads with school which any school will have and one of the things that I notice is with my school is that I do enjoy is my classes for the spring

that I have coming up as a senior who is working through getting through a lot of stuff I found that I truly enjoy the classes that are coming for me such as public speaking as this is one of the things I do on a day-to-day basis whether it be here or even even at work or at school in general um I'm very excited for some of the things that are going to come up as this is going to be the change from my shift from going from dynamics of citizenship and going into economics and slowly branching off as I start getting more into my AP bio class and soon paying off all the stuff that I need for my dual credit for it um another thing that I really enjoy um about the school is

our senior Lounge as it as it is my apologies as it is a place for us as seniors to have our own Comfort we have our own things such as TVs we have tables we have very comforting places it's actually really refreshing to see some students even catching up on sleep while even in these study halls having the chance to get the rest that they need and another thing that I also noticed is that we have our vending machine in there so students are able to get to food and have access to drinks even when they don't enjoy things that are in the lunchroom so they have um so they're not going home hungry or they're not not going home on an empty stomach or getting through the day as athletes with an empty stomach

um another thing that I also found that is really interesting is that I feel as though our high school has come a long way with a lot of the stuff not only from what students have done but from what you have all done for us as students in school so I feel as though that is a really big accomplishment for us as a district because there are many things that I feel as though have changed and as a district we've done to actually see it through um going into that um I have ideas and considerations that I've had from not only just myself but other students um from discussions um that I've had is that a lot of students really feel as though there is a good with the scholarship that we've been having um

with the work of Miss Robinson in the counseling office she has given a lot of scholarship opportunities and sent out different things like we've had scholarships for young women to do what they need to do to gain money for all their actions they've taken throughout the year we've also had scholarships for people of certain Heritage as well such as the Polish scholarship which allows a student that has one parent or two parents that are polish or come from polish descent to be able to gain money from that and further on educate others of their Heritage in general and another thing that I've noticed that has come through is that we've had a problem this is unfortunately a negative we had is Naviance that I've met many students who are struggling as seniors to ensure that

they can get their navian stun because I feel as though as seniors we've went through a lot with covid as we were the Freshman our freshman year was during the time of covid and we didn't get a chance to sit and actually be talked to about Naviance and college as it was more towards the pandemic which was needed however it also affected many of us because we are scrambling to try and figure out what we can and cannot do to ensure that we'll be able to get to college and have all the resources that we need to get there so with Naviance I feel as though um it should have been something that was talked about immediately as we got into high school and should have been a major priority for all seniors and what

I've noticed is that it seems as though freshmen they need to be on it immediately because it really will help them as I said um during the meeting um there are seniors that don't know what they're doing and feel as though they don't know what they're doing and need that guidance and feel as though had they had all this stuff together freshman junior year even sophomore year they would have had everything together and wouldn't be scrambling as of now but with that being said I feel as though if we put that into into fruition that a lot of students will feel less stressed out and you'll have students who are already set up with navian and by the time they get to their sophomore year if they're freshman or even their junior year or senior

year they'll be set up and they'll know what to do when it comes to being in a being in programs what they can do how colleges look at that and I feel as though if we talk talk more about college during the beginning of the school year and not in the middle or after then it will better prepare students for their future thank you thank you so much that moves us on to our finance facility and audit update testing hello good evening superintendent daily president coffee vice president Dr Richards and the distinguished Board of Education thank you for having me um so a lot of the items that I'll talk about um in this report from October um 23rd so it's a little over a month ago that we had this meeting there's been a

lot of updates um since this meeting occurred and I'm sure you're aware of some of them but I'm going to um share the report as it was so um we talked about the internal audit and the pre preliminary audit audit work as part of um the audit portion of the meeting um and in terms of the independent audit um we shared a status of the audit has since been approved uh we talked about the internal claims audit process and internal claims auditor or claims auditor as it's often called uh Mrs Miller gave a um quarterly report and she also shared that the district is doing a fantastic job in terms of processing payments uh Mrs Sanford also talked to the committee about um the internal um claims audit checklist um and potentially making some modifications

to that moving forward uh from a finance perspective gave a legal update on a potential settl settlement and also talked about ways that um moving into the future we can continue to protect um the district with the insurance Reserve uh excuse me um talked about authorized Banks and the use of 3+1 um when quoting Banks um the board has since approved a number of um additional investment options um talked about the U monthly board reports and talked about an alternate report for viewing monthly revenues and expenses in the general fund that will be implemented uh from a facilties perspective discussed the $68 million Capital project and how the district is working on final cost reports discussed the review of the $45 million project to the the current project um that um was actually approved today

uh discussed um the next Capital project plan and the steps that we'll be taking for potentially uh a February of 25 um vote uh we talked about a general overview of timelines and planning for um both capital projects and de service we discussed the high school boiler issues um that are also nearly remedied discussed um bus charging and the installation of electric Chargers um the good news on that front is those will be um fully installed by the end of the month um shared um some nerta um guidelines uh related to electrification of school buses talked about the Middle School um secure main entry and ways that we could bolster um security at that building um that work is currently um in process and then finally we talked about the hiring of a Security Supervisor

and then we concluded the meeting any questions all right thank you so much and have a great evening you too all right that moves us forward to consensus items can I have a motion to approve the consensus agenda Dr Richards okay who else do we have okay Miss Davis like processing sorry guys any questions concerns nobody all in favor okay the vote is unanimous can I have a motion to approve the consensus items C through K can I have a motion Miss kais miss littlewood any questions concerns all in favor okay the vote is unanimous that moves us to superintendent comments we have a quick school calendar reminder for our families that this coming Monday is a family conference day for our elementary students so on Monday December 4th there is no school for students
