Uh we do host the communitywide Veterans Day program that's at 10 o'clock at Aberdeen Central High School. Yeah. >> And I would
cordially invite anyone in the community to join us tomorrow. It is an absolutely fantastic presentation. Uh we honor our veterans uh our students participate in the program and it is just a really outstanding performance. So I would really encourage everyone to attend tomorrow and look forward to the event. All right. Our first report uh on the agenda tonight is our food service report. our um lunchtime solutions food service director Melanie Hog is here and she's here to give us information about the food service program. >> Good evening. >> Evening. >> Thank you. It's always nice to come and talk about all the fun things we do in lunch service. Uh so I I really appreciate being here. Uh let's go on to So a few things I'm going to talk about. I like to um
the fun facts that I shared last year. They've some of our numbers have increased. So, I'll go over a little bit of fun facts of the things that we do in food service. Um, customer service, my passion, the voice of the kids. Uh, we'll talk about how we're continually raising the bar in customer service. And then, you guys know I love my team and all the things that they do to continue to elevate the program. And then a big portion of what I talk I'll talk about tonight is promotions and uh taking the monotony out of school lunch. So, uh, so first, uh, fun facts. I kind of dove a little deeper on these, but because I was curious, uh, last year was my first year in K through 12. So, um, I did a
little deeper dive in that and I was curious. I'm like, how many school lunches do we serve in the United States on a daily basis? 30 million lunches. And I thought that was interesting. So, I was like, how many in South Dakota? So, so um because I want to just kind of compare it to what we do and there is over 99,000 school lunches served in the state and we're serving about 3,000 of them. So, pretty proud of that work that we do and um we have last year it was about a little over 2,800. We're doing about uh 2,900 daily and about and our lunch our breakfast counts went up so we're doing about 560 daily of those. So when we wrap up our school year, we're about uh 570,000 meals. Um it takes
a big team to do that. So we'll talk a little bit about that. And I say a team and I say a village. It takes a lot of people in the school district, not just my team, but operations. Laura is my right hand and for uh food service admin work. Um so talk a little bit about that today. Um so raising the bar in c on customer satisfaction. So we just completed our yearly student surveys. Uh really proud of the work um that was pushed out on that. We got 2215 results back from the students. Um which is it's fun to read these surveys. I'm weird, but I love to go through these surveys and read because as we're doing the work year a year over year, we want to see that we're making a
difference and that the children are they're being heard. They're our voice. And so, um, when I was reading through this, I w thought it was really interesting, especially today. Um, I was at uh Central having lunch and it was breakfast for lunch and that was the number one thing on the survey that they want is breakfast lunch and we had biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and breakfast pizza. So, I was like, "Yay!" It felt it felt good. Also, more Asian flavors. They love the pasta. They love the homestyle meals. And so this year when we created the um menu to hear the voice of the customer, it's just it it brings a lot of satisfaction to know that we're we're making those changes. So today was also our first FSAC meeting, food service authority committee
meeting today. We will have nine of those over the course of the next two weeks. So today was centrals and uh really fun to just again validate what they're saying, what they would like to to see and things changed um in uh the school lunch program. So excited for that. Um with uh their voice became a lot of new menu changes this year and I started working on those this summer. The the wonderful thing was because I completed a full year here with the district in July, I got to do my own creations this year. So, that was a lot of fun. So, um with the culinary team, we had a lot of new menu choices that have rolled out. Um Asian flavors was a big one. So, we have chicken pot stickers on the
menu. We also have chicken fried rice. Um lot of uh Mexican flavors. We have chicken fajitas. Um, we also do taco in a bag, which they never get tired of, but tater tot hot dish is a new one. U breakfast for lunch every other week. Uh, chicken Italian pasta is a new recipe and an entree. And a new one, Buffalo, uh, chicken fried rice. So, and that comes out next week. So, excited about all the new uh, recipes that came out this year and excited and that was a big talk in the FSAC meeting today. which new which new menu items do you like? And they were really talking about a lot of the new flavors. So that that was really validating. So really our goal always is happy fed kids. We always want to
increase participation, get more kids eating school lunch. So, a couple um numbers up there for you is uh you know, we do set goals every year and over year over year it's about a twopoint increase that we're continually driving. So, um this year our goal for breakfast is 12.48% of kids in the enrollment will eat breakfast and we're currently at 13.55 since the end of last month. So, I'm super happy with that. We're about a point above where we would like to be. So, awesome. Lunch. Uh, we last year was about 70%, we pushed that up to 72. Uh, we're currently at 71.24. So, we're a little under, but not by much. And I feel like with the customizations of the menu and continually moving the needle, we're going to get there. So, not worry
about that. But those are true numbers just as the end of the month. um want to work right into frontline team members that make a difference. So, a few pictures up there. Um I'm always proud of Central. They're our biggest team, but I'm proud of all the team members, but this last month was Apple Month all month long, so they had to send me a picture of them. Um they did apple slices with homemade caramel sauce and all different kinds of apple um uh varieties and crisp and all of that. So really proud of the work they're doing out there. Also Ruby front and center. She's uh making a difference with every kid that comes through her line. Tammy decided one day out of the blue she was going to dress as a banana and
so Tammy bacon it may overbe. So things that the the uh team just naturally do to elevate the program to make the kids smile. But I never like to stop there because with operations with Ben, you know, making sure our equipment is working on a daily basis and our janitors that are making sure our cafeterias are clean to the principles when I'm on site are so involved with those kids. It's it's really a whole team and village effort to put off lunch every day. So really proud. Couple quotes up there. Um we did uh national school lunch um pro promotion arty this week and just some sayings some uh quotes from uh Jared at OM Tiffany about he just really loved the dumplings that day and just sent me an random email and I was
like that's awesome. So um that's what we're striving for. Uh, this month has been a palooa of promotions. Right out of the gate, starting in August, it was um serving smiles in the lunchroom and it was all smiles decorated um smiley fries, smiley donuts, anything smile, we had it going on. Then September, we rolled right into homecoming um celebration and this was a lot of fun. We set up a week-long um menu that was just fan favorites. Um starting um the week off with Eagles donuts for breakfast, going to um the Eagles are popping popcorn chicken. Um all of the things. So it was a lot of fun. We did a um drink special at Central called the E Golden Eagles uh soda. We sold 190 of them in two days. They were they were
really a hit. So, a lot of fun. Um, the team really got into it. The students really enjoyed it. It was it was just a really great week. Um, the next uh promotion we did was National School Lunch Week, which I had to do a little fun facts on that, too. I didn't realize that the National School Lunch Week was founded in 1962 from JFK. He established it to uh promote the importance and benefits of a healthy lunch. So I always kind of want to know the why. Why are we doing what we do? Right. So school lunch the uh national school lunch this week this year was a week long of taking us around the world. So we had three stops. We did China with our teriyak chicken dumpling lunch and these are across
all nine schools where we did this promotion. Then we went to Mexico doing fajitas and tacos across the district. And then the last one was we went to Italy with pizza and pasta. Um, lot of fun, some great pictures there, but the the students really got into it and um, with the help of Alyssa with um, social media, we really got to really get the advertisement out there of what we're doing. The next promotion was Halloween fun. Uh, and was that fun? Uh, so we started spooktacular breakfast with uh a monster donuts across the district. And my favorite picture is, and it kind of hard to see on that little screen, but this little kid took his teeth out of his doughnut. He was smiling, so I had to get a picture. They had a
blast with it. Um, we also had fun with our fruit and veggie bar. Um, we had uh Slimy Eyeballs and Jell-O and and every one of the kitchen manager, they all took their team and um made all their vegetables. So, we had um Casper's Brains and all kinds of fun things. Also, a spooky soda. We had the good witch and bad witch sodas at Central. Again, a lot of fun team dressing up and just uh having a good time with the kids. Um we will finish out this fall with um a few more things. Uh we've got our holiday meal on November 20th where we're doing Thanksgiving feast. We out today what as Dr. Guffin says national uh chicken sandwich day across the district. So that was a lot of fun. We have national pickle
day coming up. So a lot of monotony breakers to kind of keep it fun. Um, and then we're going to spring right into um our summer promot uh promotions. Uh, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's, Cinco deio. Uh, we do have a uh a Easter uh promotional lunch in there. Um, lot of fun things. Um, prior to the school started, we we made a plan for all nine months and it's made it a lot easier to roll these promotions out, have the marketing materials done in advance and just it's just been nice and smooth and I think the kids have really enjoyed it and again um it takes a village to run this program with the help of everybody and uh just really honored to be here and put out this work. So, thank you. Any questions?
>> Questions from the group. Of course, >> it sounds like Lunchtime Solutions gives you a lot of flexibility locally to do what you want to do. Is that true? >> That is true. Yeah, we um we partner with local farmers. So, the whole for August, September, and October, we have a farm-totable produce that comes out of a couple different farms. Um yeah and we we just they really want it to be fun and wherever we can find the fun and the value we do. >> Yeah. I'm also curious second question I'll then I'll qu be quiet but federal level we got secretary Kennedy and educational secretary I don't know the boss >> are they directing you to do things differently or you don't have to pay much attention to them right now or >> I
don't really pay much no I'm I'm just wful right here I'm worried about advert so Um, not really. Um, just following, you know, the nutritional guidelines and, uh, USDA requirements and, um, and that's it. And then just just making it fun, you know, just, uh, >> Sounds like it. >> Continually adding fun value and breaking up the monotony. >> Yeah. >> Thank you for working for us. Appreciate it. >> Do do families ever visit or can they come and have lunch with the kids and stuff? >> They can. We have limited space but um if if it's arranged prior. Yeah, sure. Um we would love it that um you know we have more uh family but uh yeah we have you know there's not a whole heck of a lot of a lot of space
in the lunchrooms but um even come tomorrow with Veterans Day which is one of our fun promotions. We have veterans with with donuts or donuts with veterans tomorrow at Simmons Elementary and at Lincoln this year. So the kids can bring their grandparents, their uncles, their dads, uh veterans, and the PTA uh buys them donuts and and so we have them all decorated and it's a lot of fun. I'll be at Simmons Elementary in the morning, I'm sure, frosting donuts because that's that's fun and it just giving thanks back to them and yeah, it's a fun promotion. >> A question maybe more for Dr. Guffin. I know Minnesota uh pays for student. Are there any other states that are doing that around the country? I mean, would you know a handful of them maybe or >>
just off hand roughly that >> there are more? I don't know the number. >> Okay. But I just >> It's It's more than Minnesota. >> Okay. I I didn't know that. Okay. >> Well, it's incredible what you do. >> I know. >> 3,000 lunches within a hour and a half time frame. Really? I mean, it's it's amazing to think about the logistics of it and the the quality, the fun, all of those things that happen. It's remarkable and we're lucky to have be partnered with Lunchtime Solutions. >> Great do. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> Just to Melany's point, this summer, Melanie sat down with her group of people and kind of planned out some of the items, but then we we're co-branding all the things that are going out as far as promotions. So
the Aberine School District, Alyssa is helping with that, but also lunchtime solutions and that has been tremendous. I mean, it's all scheduled and planned as she mentioned and that that is huge change for this year and really to the betterment of the program. I think I can't say enough good things about Melanie. She is tremendous to work with. I mean, I think it's very clear the enthusiasm that she has for her team, which is contagious and also promotes really good product for our students. So, thank you very much. >> Thank you. >> Great. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> I appreciate the opportunity. >> Thank you so much. >> Okay. The next item on the agenda is the approval of our second reading of our school improvement plan. So, Mrs. Call. >> Any questions on the school
improvement? >> I move approval. >> Second on the floor by Olsson, second by Sharp. Any further discussion related to the second reading of the school improvement plan? >> They're all online if people want to check up. Will uh the change of the standardized testing for the high school the 11th graders will that cause a problem in reading trends and stuff when you're switching the model? >> Yeah, there will definitely be some changes with a new assessment. Uh even Dr. Graves, secretary of education comment today at the uh commission meeting today that there will probably likely be some changes as far as what we see as far as results because now all students across South Dakota are taking it. There might be a dip in scores. So, you know, he did say they expect some changes.
>> Okay. >> Homeschoolers, private schoolers, no change there. There no change there. Yeah. >> Thank you. >> Any further comments? Seeing none. All those in favor of the second reading of the school improvement plan signify by saying I. I. >> Same sign. >> Thank you. >> Okay. The next is the second reading of policy JIC. Uh that's a possession and use of weapons. I think Mrs. Call went through that one last time as well. >> So move second reading. >> Motion on the floor by Sher. Second. >> Second by Olsen. Any further discussion related to policy GIC. None. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Same sign. >> And the last item on the agenda is the approval. This is the first reading of policy. This is JFCE and JFCE-R uh
regarding student bullying. All right. For JFCE, one paragraph was added and expectation is we have to define what the expected behavior is for staff, student, and guests within our building and our properties. And that's outlined in Southakota Catified Law. And then JFE-R under investigation there is one sentence added and that also is in pursuant to South Dakota codified law and it's just saying that we have to specify locations and um locations and different activities that we will investigate. So an example is you specify that we would investigate things that happen maybe on the bus. So just two small changes to those bullying policies. All right. Thank you for the explanation. I'd ask for a motion for approval. I'll >> second. Any further discussion related to Right. >> Yes. >> Both. >> Any further questions or
comments? All those in favor of policy JFCE and JFCE-R signify by saying I. >> I. Post. Same sign. >> All right. We have nothing in front of this board. I'd ask for a motion for adjournment. >> So move by Sharp second by Beckus.
