003the other recommendations that mr young and i thought were really important to recognize tonight uh were our two flag guardians um malaya white who is not here tonight and ali ainsbury ellie you want to come up ellie and malaya every single day uh come to the main office they do our announcements they um they say quotes of the day they are happy and cheerful they wish everyone um to have a wonderful day they also go outside and put up the flag and take down the plaque they fold the flag and they are so proud and excited of their plant folding abilities they don't know if you know this but when you fold the flag properly you can see no red these ladies have perfected flag folding they are so ready to move on to middle

009289 kits spanning 19 kit titles this year so you've been very much a part of us and westside academy is proud to report that we have five students uh attending from gates who are enrolled in the program and doing very very well aside from that we haven't been doing much kitty i want to thank chris chris has been a very active member in miscus our monroe county council of school superintendents and also on the west side as you all know we've all been going through this well i think we're on what a year and a half now a very very difficult time it seems like every day we're problem-solving about something you know the new one today is how um uh tips will be distributed to parents and families before the holidays um to do

010some testings around gatherings chris has been willing and always there and he's very supportive of the things we do at superintendents in addition uh chris has uh participated in after education and um he actually will be on our first uh well coming up this year he's going to be doing uh some of them once again and just a reminder on the after education we're taking particular topics and we're going to be um so the first one is going to be on vaccinations and testing chris is going to be representing the west side brett is going to represent programs out on the east side with dr mendoza and dr cleveland pediatric position the what we're trying to accomplish there is just once again be giving the community some good facts and good information so people can

011participate um if they can't you know participate on the day that it's aired we um tape it and then it goes on the after education website so if you want to see any of them you know you can also see them from last year and we're going to resume them again this year we're going to be doing one a month and let dennis talk to us a little bit about our email meeting okay first i'd like to thank you for letting me represent stage twilight and boces it's been uh been a lot of work and a pleasure and we'd like to invite you to the annual meeting on april 6 2022. uh it'll hopefully be a good one compared to the last one and they all are they they're all good as much as they

012do in person so thank you again any questions from the board i i would be remiss if i didn't thank you for your leadership uh for not just the west side but all of monroe county uh you have led us through arguably one of the most difficult times of public education your ability to keep individuals together and move through and change education overnight and a weekend and then get us to where we are now uh speaks tremendously to your leadership so thank you for all you've done thank you chris and you are one of the hardest ones to keep into we know thank you i've said to the superintendents over and over again and as district superintendents dan and i feel this way if not us then we'll we have to keep this going we

013owe it to the children we owe it to our families and our communities so once again i thank you for the support that you give them on the tour with arlene's boats he's in so many different ways and my colleague holiday letter will be coming to you in just a few days so please take a moment to read it because we sincerely mean it thank you agenda changes first note thank you um in the light of vice president comments um just like to take the time to again once thank the gc staff for all their hard work the from the administration to the leadership in the buildings to the students because we are in such a time that things are difficult things are uneasy things are not state we're not sure some days whether we're

014coming or going but everyone's persistence consistency and diligence to do what's best for the children against child life is always appreciated so again on behalf of the board we just like to thank everyone points of interest nicole uh yes nicole i just wanted to share that um i attended a class play for charlie and chocolate factory at my friend's school at paul rose and it was miss porter's third grade class on november 23rd and i just want to recognize all the hard work that the teacher and all the support staff in that room put towards that and there are a lot of future actors that will be using our performing arts center very nice thank you any other points of interest i would like to add one just to say there's always excitement every year

015neil armstrong does their fire escape plan um contest and this year the winners were a brother or sister duo um that won that i have very particular interest in so we're excited to see that but it's always fun to watch them ride school on the fire truck so that's very always exciting if there are no other points of interest we'll go to reporter meetings um [Music] so next we'll go on to visitor comments the gateshead central school district board of education invites public comment at this time please limit your comments to three minutes or less we ask the individual state their name and address prior to comments and utilize the podium microphone to address the board although the board will not respond directly to individual comments at this time items brought to the attention of

016the board may be taken under consideration for future response or action in order to comply with laws related to confidentiality we ask that issues related to specific school district personnel or students be brought to the attention of the superintendent of schools privately the boy reserves the right to terminate a speaker's comments if his or her comments are in excess of three minutes are repetitive or are not appropriate for discussion and open public forum so the first comment for the evening mr johnson charles johnson how you guys doing uh first thing how long do you guys hate to deliberate you know going back on the math my whole argument um i haven't really heard anything i don't know if you guys do that off site um but i just want to explain the paper that i'm

017giving you the first one just a nice read it talks about the whole um how this whole pandemic pandemic how they handle it isn't working uh on the back is a chart i used just the uk america and sweden um sweden never locked down during the pandemic they never forced anyone to wear the masks kids still went to school everything and if you notice on the chart their whole cobra doesn't really exist anymore because of the whole i mean science i'm not going to get into it but i just want you to kind of please take into consideration about the whole mask thing um i don't know if you looked into the information that i gave you last time uh just about the health reasons i don't know if you want to just randomly take

018a couple kids masks and get them tested just so you can see for yourself what the kids are breathing in um i'm not going to talk about that anymore my next thing is i want to thank mr flynn who is not here um kind of wish that he was just because he did have an argument and he didn't follow up um so i kind of wish that he was here to follow up but i'm here to follow up for him um if we could just i don't know i know his time was up and he was getting cut off maybe just let him know that hey come back to the next meeting and finish off this way kind of keep that friendly you're not getting cut off because we want to move on we don't

019want to hear your topic you know i understand the whole three minutes um i did look into the whole critical race theory thing on the website and i do disapprove of it um for multiple reasons uh main one subliminal messages that's that's it right there uh you're teaching kids to be racist so when they get older they can be racist racist really comes from the parents and the community the parents bring the kids into so that's more to our family um if you want to have a like a i don't know public forum just to talk about it i would love to sit down and go over everything i'm talking about data facts you know we can even bring in a mathematician to kind of help come up with the numbers to say yeah that

020makes sense um social uh seo social emotional learning same thing as crt it's just they're changing the way they're doing the teaching um i'm not going to end i'll i'll just stop now i'll just wait until other meetings to kind of keep going you know i'll keep bringing in homework and stuff like that um with that said the next meeting should i bring like a disc to pass i know it's on the 23rd you know let me know thank you sir thank you mr johnson thank you [Music] next we have the florence brasser presentation [Music] all right good evening vice president dr richards members of the board of education superintendent daley and others welcome thank you for allowing us to welcome you to florence brasser where we learn lead and achieve together so first i'd

021like to share with you what we as florist grants are bears are hoping to achieve this year if you take a look at our brassica gold document we have that in front of you our 2021 2022 building goals are directly aligned with the district's goals our first goal engage staff and targeted professional development opportunities focused on equity student-centered learning restorative practices and instructional technology i want to share some examples of what we've been doing already and what we look forward to do also recently 14 members of our staff participated in a 10 hour pd after school in service facilitated by mrs scott and myself focusing on restorative practices within the school set our second building goal is to continue our journey with culturally responsive practices to create a welcoming affirming and equitable learning environment where

022student voice is evident each classroom adopted the story change saints which was written by a number one new york times bestseller author and presidential inaugural poet amanda gorman we used it as a read-aloud which not only provided an opportunity to celebrate cultural responsive literature into our classrooms but also provide an opportunity for students to see that all voices can be and all voices need to be heard including our youngest speaking of student voice each classroom here at brass provides a community circle each and every day to remind you of the benefits of that all students form a circle along with our staff we see ourselves as equal you listen with intent you all listen to that one voice that who is speaking and every student has an opportunity to share their thoughts our third and

023final goal increasing student achievement academically and social emotionally through the implementation of the brass away initiative and cultural responsive teaching practices tonight mrs scott will be sharing about the excitement we have with the thought of our clubs being back we also are excited to announce that we will be beginning our student council once again an opportunity to value student voice and student empowerment to improve on family engagement so all families are represented we have reopened our doors to allow parents to visit student-led steam presentations within the school day this past month second grade parents had an opportunity to come to school and have their own children explain their learning take a look and take a peek at the 16 different action steps that our staff decided upon using the online program thought exchange we're hoping

024to successfully implement many of these action steps this year mrs scott thank you we wanted to really focus our presentation to the board this year on celebrating our return to normal you know it's a different normal i guess it's a return to the activities that students love and crave over the last year and a half and we've worked very very hard to think outside the box and be creative in order to give our kids all the experiences and just opportunities that were were missed in the in the recent future we have examples of fun things um team-based activities creative activities that our teachers and students have engaged in uh prior to our thanksgiving break kids in multiple classrooms learned about the macy's thanksgiving day parade the first parades where they used live animals and children

025were terrified and there's a there's a story balloons over broadway they read it to the kids they talked about um the design of the balloon floats so we had students actually create them in fourth grade and parade through our primary classrooms to just share some joy and share an experience because prior to this year we were cut off with with having our students mix with with classrooms and you know in retrospect it was something we missed out on and we want to give our kids that opportunity um another example are uh we have amazing staff here at brexit they go above and beyond our fifth grade teachers went all out with their poetry slam they brought in croissants and they had hot cocoa if they wore french berries there was a stage and a microphone

026this microphone actually the kids had to perform their favorite poetry that they had researched and read as well as individual unique pieces that they had written we had we had staff members from across the building in our fifth grade visiting we had people from district office over just giving the kids an opportunity and in the audience that they so you know deserve and desire at this time of year uh mr young talked about that second grade steam activity this cafeteria was full of all of our second graders a handful of parent volunteers and they were creating and designing rubber band powered cars and one of the things you know i got to meet with the parents before they came down here don't give them the answers let them mess up it's part of the learning

027process and as parents it's so hard to do but it's so important and so valuable in last year we didn't have parents coming in and engaging in these activities with kids and when we knew we had the green light to do it we went bullet uh we have we have parent volunteers here all the time and we want to continue to do so because it's so important and meaningful for our students we got to go to the theater um our second third and fourth graders we're so incredibly excited to go to rvtl to see charlie in the chocolate factory i i went with them as the adult chaperone and although there was a few second and third graders that did fall asleep it is a late night it is an unbelievable experience there is one

028uh little girl i was sitting near and uh she she passed my shoulder mrs scott this is just like the book we read i know isn't it amazing and it all came to life on the stage it was just so cute these are the opportunities that we're focusing on and celebrating this year at brasser because it's what our kids and it's what our families need and that excitement is what we want and know that our kids go home and talk about when they when they get home um and mr young talked about our book change things um amanda gorman and the illustrator whose name is escaping me i believe it's david lauren uh had a flipford live event where kids across the country and in other countries were able to engage um with the text

029with the author the illustrator and one of the coolest moments was one of the ideas um that so they were creating poetry together and and miss gorman asked for ideas to be typed into the chat one of the ones she read was one that came from one of our classrooms i believe was a fourth grade group and you know when you look through multiple kids from multiple schools said that suggestion but our fourth graders really thought it was theirs you know like that would be one that she read and they were just so pumped like these are the experiences you know we can take things away from povet as a positive one of them would be check out this technology and how we can interact and engage with the rest of the world and you

030know be live with a celebrity and feel like your voice matters to that person so you know it's just these types of opportunities that are so important for our kids to take away and take home um and before you go to the next slide i want to introduce it we were the most excited to bring clubs back to brassica the way we do clubs here we have an opportunity for kids to do they're short-lived but they're three different sections throughout the school year for the fall clubs we have origami club minecraft club um lego club we have an art club um and then we have chorus and dan that that is all year long but they're also before and after school and intramurals it was so this is the first time i've been in elementary

031school where clubs were active how fun so we put together a little video so that you could kind of be in the moment with some of our kids and hear from our kids it's short mr bailey it's four minutes all right [Music] you just never liked it [Music] hi marco how are you what do you like about art club i like art club because you get to create full um cool things and um that we could create um so much creativity you can use so many tools to create something really cool hi carmen hi can you tell me about a project you did an art club that you really i really like the painting and the brushes very nice you plan to continue to do art yes oh [Music] [Applause] can you tell me what

032it is about minecraft club that you like being in at brasser well the thing i like the most about being a micro club is that i get to spend time with one of my best friends named christopher that's great who's the teacher that runs minecraft club mr fish who's mr fish to you cal is it cool to have your dad as the teacher in charge of a club yeah i really like it yeah what is what would you like to tell other kids at are about being in minecraft club in the future would you recommend it i would recommend it because you get to like you get to spend time with the people create things you need to be creative and do like a bunch of different stuff when you're done you can build your

033own world with some of your friends you want and basically create whatever you want and have fun thank you now the [Music] [Applause] both sides do you love origami club [Music] [Applause] what do you like about doing interiors here at school well i like that so many different kids can come together and play great you get to see kids from other classrooms than that yeah wonderful would you recommend it to kids that are in second and third grade yes all right thanks ellie [Music] hi gianna hi can you tell me what you like about being in chorus here at brass or in fifth grade um it would probably be just the joy of singing with everyone and learning new songs and not really perfecting them or just having fun and yeah that's probably what it's

034all one more question your classroom teacher mr romeo is helping out uh with chorus while mrs dunn is on maternity leave what do you think about mr romeo as a classroom teacher and a forest teacher he's an amazing teacher at like everything he makes everything fun but also he like gets it all done and stuff so i think it was awesome having him in course because he made like um a really good impact on it and i just like would like to thank him for being a villain we're not used to feeling but he's made like very he's worked really hard on this and i appreciate it so much so yes [Music] i want to just add one little piece to that uh when i when i record the kids i don't do multiple tapes

035that was their first tank i think it's just really powerful and raw to get their initial response so you know it's not scripted i kind of give them a heads up what i'm going to ask them um except for ally ellie had no clue and the other thing i just want to shout out to our teachers because brasser was the only school they had late buses the wednesday before thanksgiving because our teachers who ran clubs knew how excited our wednesday group was about their clubs and didn't want to cancel clubs for um those for the kids on wednesday so you know a thank you to our dedicated staff and our dedicated transportation drivers who came out here very late and got the laughs from kids okay we also want to say uh thank you to

036mrs scott uh many of you know that this is her last board meeting here florence brasser if you haven't realized she's ready to be a principal for sure and i i'd like to give her a go away gift this is something that i've always liked to look in front of when you are becoming a principal you can have your very own name on your desk that says prince of paul this is the beginning [Applause] nice job well thank you thank you um so good evening uh thank you for having us tonight i'm here just to share some information regarding the upcoming capital project proposition and vote so uh this evening is a big milestone we're really excited to be here tonight i'm here with brian celinski architect with sei design groups and so tonight is

037a big milestone because we've gone through the whole process of talking about the project as a district the community committees the board and so we're at the point now where we need to adopt some resolutions tonight in order to put the project out to vote on february 2nd and so those resolutions include a secret uh declaration which uh mr salinsky will review one more time and then also a proposition um or a motion to put a proposition out for public vote on february 2nd so i'll be back to the podium in a minute if you have any final questions on the project itself but this time i'm going to turn it over to mr celinski to talk about the secret resolution thank you i got nothing fancy to compare to what just happened so kudos

038and congrats to mrs scott we've been together on many projects here so it's great news um i have a couple things to go over one if you haven't been over to the theater lately so it's exciting the kids are getting out to be creative here and they're going to be able to use this theater the seats have gone in so something to maybe go visit and put on your agendas to go do exciting things happening the first in your agenda and your resolutions list is going to be a secret state environmental quality review for transportation tonight okay that one is a type 2 that means we're doing things that are normal work within a school district you have to do that because it's part of our application for state education department you guys are working

039to put electric buses in so you've authorized the buses we're going to put the power in for you so you'll see that one first the second component part of that is the secret type one if you remember we reviewed that we went through the project the components uh you did the first part of a three-part series tonight we're going to talk about two and three i'm not going to belabor it it was in your packet there are 18 points within that package all of those points we established a no or minimal impact within everything we're doing so based on the guidance uh based on your review of that i got to offer up that within those 18 points if you had any questions or concerns about any of those i can address those i will

040let you know that two agencies that we notified sent back to us that necessarily don't comments but just please provide us the formal paperwork and resolution thereafter but to my knowledge at this point we've received nothing you received nothing on the district side as to questions so you have nothing to answer tonight any questions of that document of those two packages with the 18 items that you have okay so within that then this evening you will declare a negative resolution i know that sounds funny but a negative declaration means in fact there is nothing for us to do at this point if you in fact execute that this evening then we will go forward and do part three part three is just basically the signature saying the board in fact declared negative declaration um my

041cabal myself will sign that document on your behalf and it basically is a document to say if there was something that we needed to address how we were going to address it but you have nothing so there'll be nothing on that documentation okay any questions in regards to that okay and the final piece of the puzzle is the resolution that'll be up tonight um at this point i guess between the two of us any questions on the project before you go forward with the resolution for the february update no questions nope you're all set thank thank you very much next we'll move on to discussion items first up is the policy committee update we had a great policy committee and the policy committee went over 6220 8210 and and recommended to the board finances financing

042facility you just like talking hello again all right so finance facility audit committee was on monday november 22nd we reviewed the charter for the financial selling audit committee we talked about having the board to start adopting that and so at the next board meeting you can anticipate seeing an adoption of that charter and then annually we'll look to have it adopted every june we talked about our property and cash on the insurance review noting that the district hadn't done a review of its property and casualty insurance in a number of years and so looking to have an outside firm look at the insurances that we have in place and potentially competitively bid out our insurance so that we can get good pricing and make sure that we have appropriate coverages we talked about state aid

043there are some initial numbers that have been shared by the state or i should say new york state association of school business officials based on state data saying that foundation aid will continue to the attempt to fully fund it over the next two years will continue and so we could potentially see a 1.8 million dollars through that which on the district sorely needs in order to balance its budget uh staff updates we just talked about some staffing shortages and how we're looking to rehire those positions um within the business office uh we talked about the internal audit process how freedmaxic our internal auditors are starting their review um we also talked about the 2022 um capital project again mr celinski and i covered the details that were outlined in the finances that was it are

044there any questions about the meeting or anything discussed great evening thank you ad hoc committee update um the ad hoc committee met yesterday like yesterday um and we made a recommendation to the board to move forward with our book study and that recommendation was accepted any questions all right so next consensus item can i get a motion to approve the consensus agenda motion ms hinchey onsen second miss coffee all in favor vote is unanimous next can i have a motion to approve the consensus items see through oh motion please mr long and miss kai's all in favor unanimous you miss mikayla good evening we have three teacher retirements to acknowledge this evening uh first we'd like to acknowledge uh debbie harrison who has served as a speech pathologist for the district since 2005 she will
