001Go ahead and call the April 28th Everine School Board meeting to order. We begin with the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Roll call, please. Mr. Here, Mr. Bson present. Mr. Brian present. Mr. D here. Dr. Yortnham here. Mr. Kevin Brickard. Mr. Mark Murphy here. We have a lot of good news to talk about today. We do. We do. And the first group is ready to go. Um, our instructor, Amber Dolman, is here with two of our extremely talented artists, and she's going to walk us through uh the visual arts championships that took place and what our students have accomplished. Good evening. Good evening. Good evening. Good
002evening, members of the board. Um, I'm proud to share the accomplishments of our CHS art club and recognize our talented students. This year, six of our students participated in the stationed art wars regional competitions and uh with three of them advancing to the state level and two students becoming state champions in two out of five categories. So, what is Art Wars? ArtWars is an in the- moment art competition where students are given 1 hour and 45 minutes to create and finish a totally original art piece in their category based off of a topic given by the judge. the most creative piece and the most uh creative artist statement wins. So, uh the judge will come in, none of the students have any idea what they're doing. They come in, they just have their supplies and
003their category. So, if they're in the drawing category, they have their favorite drawing supplies. If they're in the clay category, they have their clay. And um the judge will come in and say, "All right, here's your prompt. You have exactly one hour and 45 minutes to create something magical." And they're they go at it. And um for this year to earn the comp one of the competitive spots um students had to demonstrate not only artistic skills but time management, material knowledge and the ability to communicate their work effectively which our students did an outstanding job in. Their artist statements were stellar from what I heard from the judges feedback. Um this year at both the East River and West River regions there were a combined total of over 300 competitors. So statewide for just regionals
004was over 300 competitors and they are individual competitions. They if uh three students in our school are competing for drawing they're competing against each other and other states or other uh students in the states and um our students talents won them a spot to showcase their skills at the state level where only six students could compete for top spots in each category. So out of those 300 um plus students, only about you know 30 students are allowed to compete at the state level. Um our students dedicated countless hours to their craft and their hard work has truly paid off. Um we've had several weekly practice sessions on most Fridays until 4:30. So we've done like full practice sessions um in preparation for this. And they also did have to write their artist statements to defend
005their piece and explain what the the idea or concept is. Um, and we also meet sometimes Wednesdays just to go over things and get some more feedback as well. Alta is a firsttime art wars competitor and she earned first place um in drawing and she also placed second in the state art competitions um cultural arts category which is a separate competition that is done at the same time just you can make your piece before um and it showcases her growth and dedication along with helping to organize and contri she does uh she organizes and contributes with fundraising and art club too on top of all of the extra practice that she does. Um, another really great achievement for her is she is also an Oscar House summer visual arts recipient, which is a very competitive
006summer program offered at USD. So, that one they have to send in artwork and be able to um try to win a spot for for a summer program. Um, our other stu competitor, student competitor, Ken, is a participant in previous art wars. Um, he took first place in painting during the state art wars. He's also earned recognition at the South Dakota State Art Competition and the NSU jured high school workshop this year, taking third place in both pa in both um third place in both for his paintings. So he did separate artworks, but still placed pretty good. Uh he has served as art club president for three years, exhibited his work locally in multiple locations, and has received several pet portrait commissions. So he is working as a professional artist right now. He takes commissions
007and he's done a couple this year amongst last year too. Um, our third student who competed, Rainey Labros, also represented CHS at ArtWor, earning second place in digital art and third in clay. Rainey also recently last week took first place in the digital art category and judges choice award in digital arts at the all Dakota which is two stateates competition um last week formerly known as the greenery. So, it is with great pride that I introduce our 2025 state art wars champions, Alta, Three Legs, and Ken Hommer. Hello. Thank you. Thank you. Hello. My name is Ela Three Legs. I'm a junior at Central High School here in Abadine. Before, my dream wasn't always to become a professional artist. I didn't really know where I wanted to go in life, only to go to college
008eventually cuz it was a dream since I was a kid. Being at Central High School, working with Miss Dolman and her art club and all her classes put me on the path I'm on today to become a professional artist and later become a teacher for art. I plan to go to either the college here in Aberdine or Vermilion or the Black Hills to learn art education and professional art, studio art. My time in art wars was actually amazing. I was very nervous when I first started. Didn't think I'd get too far in it, but it was amazing going there. Just the experience. It was very different from any other art competition you experience. You go there with a bunch of other art kids and it's it's might sound stressful, but it was actually pretty calming
009to be able to just sit down and do the art. The prompts were very exciting to see. We had different ones, unexpected ones, and the ideas some people came up with was just amazing to look at. Some of the art you you don't get to see because some kids aren't willing to go come out and do competitions or you're just not in the right state or anything. But it was amazing to come and see all the artists gathered around together. Art Wars was a great experience for me. And if it wasn't for Miss Dolman, I wouldn't have the courage to do any other competitions. I had an anxiety when it came to showing my art and I didn't really believe it was good enough for state or any type of placing. But with Miss Dolman's
010help, her training, her coaching, and her encouragement, I was able to thrive and be able to be here today. Alto, what was your prompt? Our prompt for drawing in the art war state was Aphoria, an intense feeling of happiness and excitement. My piece I I wasn't able to bring it today, but my piece was of a woman. She was dancing with music, flowers, butterflies around her, all these bright and vibrant colors, and her hair even looked like a butterfly. And my my artist statement said how when we surround ourselves with the things we love and the things that bring us joy, it helps us get through the day and have the will to keep living. And do you use pencils, colored pencils, or is it painting? I painting and drawing are kind of different because
011of the materials and stuff. But for drawing, I have a lot of freedom because I could use from pencils, crayons, color pencils, oil pastels, and even paint markers, which are the actual some of the things I did use in my drawing. Do they keep the piece or do you have it at home or Oh, I actually have it at the school in the front casing with our rewards and all the other art pieces that were in it. So, we can see it sometime. Yes, you actually can. It's at the right of the school and all of them are there with our rewards and it just looks absolutely amazing. I feel very proud to be able to contribute to my school, contribute to the community, and just be a me member of this amazing group. What
012uh art classes have you taken? I've taken portfolio art, which is learning how to make the portfolio where when you try to apply for colleges and other things like art shows. I was in painting one and two where we build our skills, learn different techniques and actually learned about some of the artists before us and I was in drawing one and possibly drawing two where that's where we learned how to do different perspectives. We learned how to draw a still life. It was amazing. There's a lot of art classes at Central High School that I've been willing to take and I just can't wait till next year where I can take even more. Congratulations. So, as a junior, you'll be able to compete again next year. Yes. Probably win again. I'm very hopeful. Yes. There's
013a lot of people out there and as I said, they all have such amazing artwork and it's always down to the judge's decision and I'm very proud to be able to be here and standing because my art piece touched someone's heart and they were able to see my vision. We're proud of you. Thank you very much. Very nice. Well done. Yes. Good evening. I'm Ken. I don't have such an eloquently written speech. Um, my prompt for painting, I took first place in painting at Art Wars. My prompt was amazing with three dots after it. Very cryptic, very, very, it's a very difficult prompt. And I took inspiration from divinity and mystery and seeing something that is unexplainable. And so I painted a deer eye really close up and a up to interpretation inflection reflection in
014the eye. And so in my artist statement I wrote it could be a god, it could be a hunter looking down at what he what he caught. It could be, you know, anything like that. And uh yeah, it was a it was a hard prompt. Um, that was all I was to say. Ken, how like how long do you you just start and it just hap or like do you sit and kind of think for a few minutes or how do you This one I did have to think for a little bit. Not a super long time. I You don't have a long time. No, no. I was just like seeing the first thought was witnessing something amazing and so I'm like well the eye you see stuff with it and that's what I I
015started with and then it slowly built to the point of adding a reflection. I wasn't sure if that was what I was going to do yet. So it's trust the process. Did you kind of have in your mind like I'm going to spend this amount of time doing the art piece and this amount of time doing the statement? Do you kind of did you practice that or I not really. I just do as much as I can. They gave you a warning how much time you have left and that's when they gave you the artist statement sheet and so I took that time when they gave it to me to write the statement and then I continued working up until I was satisfied. Are you a senior? Yes. You have plans for next year? Um
016nothing really art related and going to Northern for a biology degree to study. Um my dream is to do Alzheimer's research. Amber, can I ask do you have to are there a limit to the amount of entries in each category from each school? I mean, do you get three or two or whatever? Um, for the regionals, no, it's however many kids want to go. Right now, it is. um as it grows there might be some limits but usually it's anywhere between you know one hopefully more than one one to uh up to as many as 12. Some schools had 12 students um who competed and they can compete in more than one category. All of our students um who went competed in two categories. So, um that gives you double the chance to potentially place
017and um at regionals Ken actually placed in two and uh the other student Rainey placed in two and Ulta placed in drawing. So, they had more of a chance to win. But the fact that our students were able to take those spots from potentially other students to even be able to go to reach to a state is pretty impressive because there's quite a few students vying for those positions as well. So, do they draw and paint at regionals and at state or do they just take what they did at regionals and present at state or do they draw or paint again at state with a different prompt? Um, they get completely new prompts, completely new jud judges, and they can't bring any pre-made artwork with them. It is just your supplies. So, if you're in
018the drawing category, you bring whatever you're comfortable to draw with. If you're in the painting, if it's watercolors, you bring watercolors if you're comfortable with it. If it's, you know, acrylics, you bring acrylics and anything that you can possibly think you'll need. Um, it's up to the the coach and the students to bring it. And, um, the facilities don't supply anything usually. So, they just show up with a creative spirit and a drive to compete and hope that the judge gives them something that they don't end up blanking out on. So yeah, I think we're all excited to walk into Central again and see the art pieces and uh you should all be very proud of yourselves. Congratulations. Congratulations for coming. There'll be some transition between got a lot of group. Go ahead. Yep. Free
019group in. Thank you very much. Thank you. Congratulations. Bye. Nice to see you. Mr. Shauser's here. Hello everybody. Yes, you may go ahead and start. All right. So, um I'm here with uh four students. There are others that couldn't make it tonight, but they had uh received awards for the or they received awards for the student production awards this year. and we had 10 uh nominations and then we came away with five student production awards. Of those uh three of them were individual awards and then two of our shows won as well. Uh Owen Deutsch couldn't make it tonight. He's working at the Boys and Girls Club. So uh but he won a in a public service announcement category. It had aired on Eagle Zone a time or two, so maybe you have seen it.
020It was one where he had himself marrying a cell phone and then the punchline of it was your closest relationship should not be with your phone to put it down. And that was a really clever one and there were a lot of little clever things in there. I'm not surprised it won. Uh Brock Anderson is another senior. He's out of town for tennis so he couldn't make it but he won for uh uh writing and his work is always solid. All he needed was that one story that would help uh showcase his work. you kind of need that story that gets people's attention and then he got one with a kidney donation and that um so then it could show he was able to showcase his skills and he won and then Tristan Cunningham's family
021actually moved away from Aberdine so he can't be here tonight so our three individual winners couldn't but uh he was acting in a public service announcement about keeping Central clean and he was a detective um investigating littering around Central that for a public service announcement and he was really funny and it match his personality. He's a lot of fun. So any anyway, they couldn't be here. Uh then the um Eagle an Eagle Zone one and I'll tell let them talk a little bit about that show um from last spring and then an Eagle Zone live one for best newscast uh and that was one that happened uh this fall. The uh one person who isn't represented here that was involved in um Eagles on Live was Zoe Stoie. She worked really hard on that. And
022then Colobby Down and uh Cooper Foscher had really good stories in the Eagle Zone and they couldn't make it tonight. Um and we were up against some pretty big schools, so it's fun to win these. And um but there are a couple of other really fun wins uh that are fun for me to see. So I thought I'd go through those uh kind of highlighting the students that came here tonight. And uh one it was really fun and I would say it was a win watching Preston break uh uh constantly uh develop better communication flexibility uh problem solving and any other skill that you need to run the tririccaster. The tririccaster would be uh the person who's behind the scene switching it from this shot to make sure this video goes and this shot and
023then so it's um someone really has to be on their toes and uh yes Preston just he he nailed it. He's good at those things. And the anchors, we have a couple anchors here who can vouch for me. They always wanted Preston running that thing when they were on the desk because they knew if anything happened, Preston would be able to figure it out and make them look good. It was also a win watching Gavin Bits return to a former principal and record himself thanking her for uh never giving up on him after he basically tortured her with his behavior for his entire elementary career. And then airing that video for everyone to see. That was a win. And then I would say it was a win on steroids watching Ethan Gats share with all
024of us what it was like um in a story that Joey Pierce produced what it was like as a kid with autism to navigate different challenges in high school and how esports helped him gain the skills to navigate those challenges. And Joey did such a good job um featuring that story. And then also, I think Joey did a great job with continuing coverage about esports, which I think really helped change people's mindset when it came to esports. It certainly helped change mine. I've always been an anti-gamer. And just seeing the value, thanks to the stories Joey would do of like the value it would bring. I just thought, okay, never mind. I'm okay with this. This is a good thing. Um, and then last but not least, uh, Delaney Johnson. It was a win to
025watch and I wanted to pick this very specific story. It was a win to watch her put a story together in the winter that didn't run till spring. And then when she realized the video wouldn't match what it was like outside, it was an absolute win to see her pump her work ethic into high gear, go back out, get all new video for it. And it was also a win to see how gracious she was when the wrong story got uploaded and the old one after she had redone all that work was the one that aired. and she just said that's okay. So, those are all really big wins and sorry to have to do this to a couple of you, but it was it's also been a big win to see kids come in
026and just to see how much they develop from beginning to end. And for many that starts in 10th grade, but for a few of them that started in seventh grade back when we had they were part of this little news show we had called your weekly SMS at Simmons Middle School. And uh just because I can, I put together this little 10-second clip of a couple of them back in those days, so you can see how much they've grown since that time. Uh not just physically that as well, but uh just how much they've de developed. They would yell at you a lot um to tell you to put your head up or you would have to run to the scoreboard, which is a long ways away. I suppose we just thought picking up trash
027would be a good idea and then it just came to life. So, there is that. And I could not I was looking through I know Delaney was part of it, but uh I was like, how could I not find a clip of hers and then uh we were just talking out here and I think she just did the behind thescenes stuff. So, uh Delaney was also part of that. Uh but anyway, I just want to step to the side and let them come up and share what role they played in the shows that one. I'll go ahead. Um so, I am Joey Pierce. I served as the anchor for Eagle Zone Live this past year and I was part of the show that won for 1124 for the live segment and then I also did
028a story on 3624 which is our pre-recorded segment that also received an award. Hi, I'm Gavin Bits. I was part of that show that uh won with me and Kobe Down as the anchors. Um pretty much just want to say that was a very touching story that me and Colobby put together. It was to deal with mental health and Cooper Fosure that couldn't be here. He was the main main point of that story. But watching me and Kobe put that together and watching it win an award was very pleasing to us. Um we like I said, we put that whole show together by ourselves. Figured everything out to do and obviously can't got to give praise to Preston for running the tricastaster and all that stuff for us and he put a good story into
029that. pretty much everything I want to give glory to is Mr. Shottfouser. Uh we wouldn't be there pretty much without him. Uh he taught us everything we know, everything we can do. Uh he tells us the right and wrong things and we go and fix it. So there's pretty much everything is for him. I mean he put us all in the same spot and like that he said been my teacher since seventh grade. So, um, seventh grade when I joined, he said, "Gavin, you're going to do this and this and I did it." And when I got when he moved to the high school and I was like, "I got to go join his class now." And now I got to now I can say I won an award for him. So, that's all I
030got to say. Thank you. I am Preston Break. Uh, I was a part of the two shows that won. Uh, of course I I was actually in both of them in stories, but I was also the one who was running the tririccaster, of course. And yeah, I don't know. He he just made me audition for it like one day and just said, you know, you're pretty good at it, so you're going to stick with it. So that's pretty much what I did. So now I just do it all the time. And it just came easy to me. But I actually went to like Minneapolis to the Emmys and it was a good time. I had a great time giving some speeches, having to stand in front of a crowd, which isn't what I'm used to
031cuz I'm usually behind the scenes. But yeah, I have a great time doing all this stuff. So, hi, I'm Delaney Johnson. I worked on the pre-recorded Eagles on that winner award and I was just on the graphics for the sports segment and some of the editing. I I remember specifically that I was just there to like look up icons for the schools and sport groups and then I while I was there I was just like might as well edit it since I'm here anyways. It's all right. Unless you have any questions, that's what we have. Are any of you pursuing careers in production? I've considered that as a minor in college, but I'm still trying to figure out a couple of things. I got a couple of ranges from English all the way from IT
032and then over to broadcast. I don't know. Worst case scenario, I'll just end up like Sha with the title, Joey. Anybody else? Um, I'm planning on going to Minnesota Morehead for film production and a minor in business. Great. I'm still a junior. Stuff out. I do not want to I'm not going to college for this stuff. So, I think he's honest about it. I just joined cuz it's Choffauser obviously he egged on me and egged on me since he came to the high school and not since I got here. So I was like well I did it in seventh grade I'll do it again in high school. So no I just do it for fun. It's fun to make stories and going to see make stories pretty much get to go to the elementary schools
033see all the little see what the little kids cuz they're always like oh I get to be on Eagle Zone. So that's fun. And now that Joey left, I I took over his role on Eagle Zone Live. So, it's been a big kind of a big change cuz Eagle Zone is pre-recorded, but Eagles on Live going in front of camera and then having people watch is a big jump. But Sha Fuzzer trusted me. So, um he said you can Joey's gone now, so you can do it. And I got on there and a few weeks later, Zoe, the other girl that couldn't be here, she was my partner and she couldn't be on that show. Still a second weekend of Eagles on live by myself. I had to do it all by myself. So the
034father trusted me. So no, I don't have any career in this. Well, congratulations to the congratulations. Thank you. Let's roll. How are you? Just you. Madam President, you come stand. I don't know. You guys can all come in. Good evening. Good evening. Thank you guys having us so much to help celebrate our uh state champions. We had, I believe, 19 um state champions in different events. We placed in 40 of them. Um there's about 60 events that FBA has to offer and we were entered into all but seven this year. So we did really well. My hintsman was the taskmaster. She was our president this year. Uh doing doing great work. And I will turn it on over to them and they can say how wonderful it was to ultimately do great down in Sou
035Falls. Sure. Go tell them what event you did. Hi you guys. Uh so as you know as Honda said we're a part of FBA. I won the who's who scholarship and I won a marketing event. Thanks, our vice president. What did you win? Hi. Um, I won data analysis as well as business ethics and one more. I don't you something else? And something else. Yeah. All our people here have won an event. We're very proud of everyone here and we thank you guys for your guys' support as well. You guys want to step up just introduce yourselves and tell us what event you did? Um, I'm Baiton. Uh me, Lincoln, and Colin here, we won uh management information systems event. Great. Uh I'm Amna George and I won uh public speaking. Hi, I'm Mason Mo
036and my two partners aren't here, but it was um I won uh hospitality event management. Your sister like where'd you leave her? Uh she is a NHS meeting. All right. Excuse. And I'm Agy Ramy and I won business communications. Great. So, which of you put the flaming flamingos in my yard last night? That would be me and honor. Thank you very much. They they have already flown over and landed and they have been requested to be removed already. So, oh jeez, they're gone. I appreciate that. Sorry, Dr. Guff has already purchased. I know. I was going to share that. So, they are not going for several years, by the way. Yeah, it was fun. So, second overall in how they group 19 champions. Is that what you said? 19 champions. Ying and every of the
03719 kids that we took, everyone placed, which was awesome. And all but one kid got first place in the event. And the one that didn't took two seconds. So, they did very, very we did really, really well this year. So now we're looking for next year. Fantastic. Congratulations. Congratulations for having us. Appreciate it. Thanks for having me. Thanks. I really want a full detailed report. What you did, Mr. Sner. How you doing today? We're good. We're good. Welcome. Welcome. Mr. Summer, can you give us just an overview of what Skills USA is and then we'll introduce our students and what they did at the competition? Well, it's a state competition where you can go in and compete. In fact, I was talking to Mr. Shophouser. They also have a radio and TV area, so we
038need to drag the whole building down there basically. But these guys were mostly an automotive area. We took somebody with building trades and they all compete against other schools around the state. So um COB and was in uh automotive service automotive service. These two were al were both in radio uh maintenance and repair. It's not my category. Connor got first. Mr. Jacob got third here. So, these two are our state winners over here. Do you guys want to talk a little bit about what the competition was like? Like, what did they have you do? And again, tell us what category you were in. I was in the automotive service one, and they had us uh come into a room and there's four different vehicles. We had to measure the brake run out, find out why
039a vehicle didn't have any fuel pressure, clear a engine code, and diagnose it, and then take a tire on and off a rim. Okay, I was in the automotive maintenance and light repair and I had to do the brake run out on the vehicle and diagnose why one didn't have fuel pressure. Basically the same stuff that he did. And then I did the same exact stuff, but uh uh mine was uh graded differently because I scored differently on the pre-EST. So it was graded differently from his. So what's the pre-EST like? It's just an online test that asks you questions about automotive diagnosing stuff. Okay. Where did your competition take place and how many other participants were in the It was in Mitchell Tech. There was quite a few good about that. But there was
040two different categories and they kind of all did the same thing. So I wasn't sure who was in what. But maybe 16 guys, 14, 16 guys. So you split them in half. You know, there wasn't as many this year. So I think if we take a whole bunch down there, we'll get a whole bunch of statement. So then we got to go to Atlanta, Georgia. Oh jeez. That's So do you have to do it really fast or No, you're But you don't have to. The speed doesn't matter, right? Yeah. It was timed, but more just to get people through it so they don't get stuck. Otherwise, it's graded on your uh safety and professionalism and knowledge of the tools. Okay. And I think the pretest had a lot to do with it. And I think
041that's where a couple of our guys would have did a lot better if they had did better on the pre-est paid a little more attention to it than Sure. Are there different categories like for electric cars versus gas powered cars? I don't believe so. I believe it was just automotive. They also had general diesel tech area. They had like four or five different auto areas. It was just the two they signed up for. And we took some welders along too, I guess. And some building trade. We did one kid with building trades. He got third as well. But okay. They have 114 different competitions actually. Wow. At our state level, I think there was only like 79. But at the national level, there's 114 different categories. So, do the winners ever get a scholarship or
042assistance to go on to secondary education? State level. Did they say anything? No, I don't think from the state level there's but at the national level I think they I mean some of them guys they're going to be there's a lot of people there. It's a lot of vendors looking. Is there industry people looking to hire you guys at those events? Uh yeah. I thought it was in the stuff that I won. Half the prizes were marked with the dealership that was looking for higher. Super. What grade are you guys in? But they're all gradually so they won't be able to compete next year. That's smart. I'm kind of, you know, $400 item they want. I was trying to convince him to go a little schools. School. Sure. Congrats. Congratulations. Congratulations. All right. Well, thank
043you for all of that. All right. Uh, we have the agenda in front of us. I'd ask for approval of tonight's agenda. By Sharp, second by all. All those in favor of tonight's agenda signify by saying I. I person wishing to address the board. None. Board remarks. Any remarks for this evening? Just like to uh pass along the condolences to the Nicholas family. Uh Bob Nicholas, a longtime educator and obviously board member and uh community member and uh just want to wish him and his family the all the best. With that, I would move into the consent agenda. Does anyone want anything pulled for tonight's consent agenda? None. I'd ask for approval. Motion by Olsson. Second. Second by Dr. Bornham. All those in favor of tonight's consent agenda signify by saying I. All right. Report
044to the superintendent. Dr. Guffin. Thank you. Mr. Alberg is here from OM Tiffany with a few guests as well. So, right. Thank you for having me here. I'm Jared Alberg, the proud principal of OM Tiffany. So, here tonight to give our update what's happened at Om Tiffany this year. Uh, we'll start here with the uh that's the mural we made. We make mural every year at our activity day. So, that's mural that got made last year and it's hung up in our gym now and it looks awesome. Um, safety, we do I don't have any pictures of the safety drills or anything we do, but we're very dedicated to all of our fire drills and uh lock down drills and making sure that everybody is safe and and knows what to do. We just had
045our last um Alice drill of the year with the police department last week and they were very happy with how it went. Um talk a little bit about reading. You know, one of the academic areas we've really tried at hard is reading. Uh we've done a lot of fun things this year at Om Tiffany uh with reading. Um each year, you know, we celebrate Read Across America Week. We've got some pictures here of that. And then we also uh this was our second year of doing March Madness. And it's a it's a book challenge for the kids. And uh we have one of the teachers in the pictures, Miss Wavelin, is here and her class reads um during March Madness. But we we have a big assembly at the end um of March Madness and
046we give away um the basketball theme. So water bottles, basketballs, books, posters. We give that all away to the kids and they just have a great time with that. Uh community partnerships. We've got some really great partners that come into our school and and work with us. Uh Dakota Prairie Museum and Miss Sherry are just phenomenal. Um they come into our second and third grades and they play games with the kids and and teach them the history of Aberdine and Brown County and the kids just love it. Um the police department um love our SRO's. They're just wonderful. Um Officer Klein, you know, probably in the lunchroom once a week just visiting with the kids and is present there. Um and that's really really great. Um and then we have DARE and this year we
047had um Officer Bruce is our instructor who's has a son in fifth grade and and Dare was great. And then also with uh Brown County 4 comes in and does robotics with our fifth graders. Um the kids eat that up and love that. And we have our two fifth grade teachers here tonight also. And then NSU, this is our second year of having NSU in our building teaching a couple classes both semesters. uh parent activities um we did a a reading title one event um in the fall was really nice. It was all outdoors and bunch of different stations that parents could get to go to with their kids and um just get everybody excited about reading. And then we had a STEM night um this this winter and that was awesome. It was the
048first time we tried to do a STEM night and the sign-in sheet was pages and pages long. Uh kids could do make and take activities. There were STEM activities they would just do there. Um I had three parents reach out to me after the event asking where did you get those STEM items? This is awesome. My my kid wants these. We want to we want to do this. And so that was that was really nice. Uh, one fun thing we did this year too, um, at Christmas time. Last year we did the 12 days of Christmas. That was about eight days too many. This year we just did the the clash of the classes and we got in the gym one afternoon and uh, every single child in our building got assigned from their class
049assigned to one of the activities whether it be making puzzles or making towers. Um they just had a great great time with that and the kids remembered and talk about that quite a bit. Um just last week we had our PTA dome night. We go to the dome each year and uh again very well attended by our students and parents. Our PTA does a lot of really awesome things for our our students and our staff and we're really appreciative of them. And then the final thing I have before I introduce our sense um is our student opportunities. Um this year bucket drumming is back again. So if you listen to our spring program, you'll hear the sounds of five gallon buckets getting wailed on. Um and Miss Agiri, our art teacher, started up an art
050club this year and they meet Fridays in the art room during their lunch recess. A lot of kids love that. We participated in the world art day contest uh this year. We had some submissions for that. Um, and then the big thing this year, and I know you've it's on your agenda tonight, your consent agenda, but we we were approached last year about this time, uh, Adam Buck House from 3M approached me say, "Hey, what do you think about getting a numbers ninja program going at at the elementary school to be kind of a feeder program, uh, for math council middle school?" and I put it out to the staff and these three staff members here beside me um jumped on it and they ran our numbered ninjas program this year and it was so
051successful that next year there's several more schools jumping in and we're going to have some elementary math competitions with that and I I have with me tonight I have Michaela Waflin Katie Blocker and Jenna Huck they are they're not the coaches they're the sense and so I wanted to um have them acknowledge and I'll just let them talk just for a couple minutes about about number ninjas. All right. Well, like um Mr. Alberg said, we were approached by Adam Buck House and he kind of just brought the idea to us and we kind of ran with it. We met with Dina Severs and she kind of just told us how she runs the math counts at the um middle school level and she gave us great tips. So, we just kind of brought it back
052to our school and we just added as added the best we could. We did um lots of flashcards, um group settings, scavenger hunts and stuff like that. It was it was so fun. And to be in a classroom where everybody wants to learn math was amazing. And then each week they take a times test and they had to answer um 40 questions right in one minute. And the determination was amazing. Like their palms would get sweaty and they get nervous and we even had some like tears cuz they were so upset they didn't pass the test but then if they like passed their twos they got a green belt then a red belt and so forth. So um kids like if we didn't have number ninjas they'd be like when's the next one? When's the
053next one? So they were so excited and that was awesome to see. Yeah. And we do like each month we try to have a challenge at the end of the month and we did scavenger hunts around the school. So like one month it was multiplication. We did an algebra one. We did like order of operations. So they loved running around the school. We had like 20ome fifth graders and then on their final test like will you do math counts and all of them besides one said yes. So that's kind of a cool recruiting program. So yeah. What grade levels participated? Third, fourth, and fifth. Yep. Seventh graders are excited. When did you meet? Like how many days of a week or? Yeah. Once a week on Thursday after school. Yep. Three to four. Yep. So,
054we finished it last week and they're ready. Ready for next week year. So, they're excited. What else is really neat about it is you'll have a third grader and a fifth grader sitting at the table working together and that's really neat to see, too. you feedback from parents start. We're super excited about it. Like we sent the form home and they had they were like, "Yeah, sign them up." We talked to a bunch of people and they got everybody excited. And Adam Buck House said he was at like a baseball game or something. And some parents like, "Have you heard of OMT's number ninjas? It's like an awesome program. My son loves it. Do you have anything to do with it?" And Adam kind of smiled and then he's like, "Yeah, I kind of helped
055start it." So, I know parents were talking to Adam a lot about it, how they loved it and kids want to be in it. So, I think second grade really wants to be in it. We'll wait till third. So, it's cool. Gez. Well, when you think of math and so many so many of us don't they we all say we're not good at math or we don't like math. And if you're getting if it's fun, you know, they don't realize this is going to be awesome and it's building. It'll be amazing to see if scores start building just because they're having fun with it. They're learning. It's not so hard. Yeah. Confidence booster for sure. I think the kids built some confidence. A lot of that, right? Do you have to do a lot of
056extra? I mean, we kind of met like every other week or something. what do we want to do this week? Or like Katie would plan a lesson, Jenna would plan a lesson, plan a lesson, and we can just overwhelming for you and it's fun. So, yeah. Yeah, it was good. We end with like haya, you know. So, we take a chance and everything. Yeah, it was fun. How we end our meetings. Start doing that. Maybe we should think of something like this board. Well, thank you for you know what's kind of exciting for me is um hearing you talk about this program. We get so much criticism at the federal level public educ education bailing our students around the country and yet I never see any of those legislators come to South Dakota or Aberdine
057in South Dakota and look at what we're doing for all of our kids. I mean, earlier tonight, we had good news reports. We had 25 kids up here talking about all the awards they receive and those types of things. Some of these ideas could be used, I think, in Washington DC. Maybe you guys should fly out there sometime about that because it truly, you get tired of hearing at the criticism. I look every week at what our kids accomplish in this district thanks to you guys, the teachers and the principles and administration. I just go like, my gosh, they are really missing the boat on what they could offer around the country. Absolutely. Thank you for everything you guys do. For sure. Questions or comments? Keep up the great work. Going well. Thank you. Oh,
058I'm sorry, Mr. Alman. Oh, I don't know if you're Jared. Question for Jared. Um Jared, as you look ahead in the next two or three years at OM Tiffany, do you see any special uh challenges coming forth in these changing times that might affect student needs and something that might need to be addressed? I don't know if you've thought about that or if you have comments. I haven't given that a lot. things change so fast with families, you know, they uh people coming in, people leaving. Um I think our district does a great job of making sure if somebody comes here, they have everything they need to be successful. Um I think the or community organizations step in and help out. And um so I think we've got a lot of programs to help people
059and we'll just we'll just ride this wave for a little bit and see where it ends. You have a very active PTA again, don't you? Yep. But small but active. You want to thank you and uh you are the second best Albert to present to us in the last month. We certainly appreciate that. The other two aren't in school anymore. Thanks for all. Thank you. Thank you very much. Okay. The next item on the agenda is the annual uh approval of the juvenile detention center agreement. Um this is an annual agreement that Mrs. Call is bringing forward tonight. Yes. So um no changes to the annual agreement for juvenile detention. Um right now what it states is that they'll provide the internet, the facility, and then we provide a certified teacher and the instruction piece
060of that. And so that includes we also provide the technology for the students to participate in online classes if they're taking that. So looking for approval of the ease of the agreement. So moved. Second on the floor. Second second by Sharp. Any further discussion regarding the uh agreement presented? Seeing none, all those in favor of the dudal detention agreement signify by saying I. I. Oppose. Same sign. Thank you. Next is the approval of the administrative rule waiver uh for one of our mentor teachers. Yes. Okay. So, I have several uh administrative rule waivers this evening. Um maybe I'll describe the first two since they're the similar ones, but essentially we are required to submit a administrative waiver for any rule that the DOE presents and we have to have that submitted 60 or 90 day
06160 days sorry 60 days prior to July 1st which means May 1st. So that's why we're bringing those forward this evening. So the first two link mentor teacher and heper mentor teacher is essentially the administrative rule states that you have to have been within the classroom within the last five years as a full-time teacher to mentor and both of those individuals are retired teachers, excellent teachers and they participate in our mentor mentee program and um it's been five years since they retired but however they have kept their certificate current and they are also subbing so they are in the classroom at all times. So those are the two that I'm asking approval for first. I'll move to approve those motion on the floor to approve individually or can we do that's why I have them.
062Should we do them individually? Yeah. So would that be a motion for the link mentor teacher? Second. Second by all. Any further discussion regarding the link mentor teacher waiver? None. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. same time. All right. I would ask for a motion for approval for the Heer mentor. So moved. Panel four. Second. Second by Sharp. Any further discussion to be had about the administrative rule waiver for Miss Hepper? None. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. Same sign. Thank you. All right. My next one is the high school credit before 9th grade. And essentially this is majority of this is for eighth graders to take advantage of algebra 1 prior to 9th grade and receive high school credit for that. We also do offer algebra 2 and
063geometry. Those are not usually um used as often but certainly for algebra 1 approval. Second motion on the floor by Olsson, second by Sharp. Any further discussion uh related to the rule waiver for high school credit before grade nine? None. All those in favor signify by saying I. I oppose. Same thing. All right. Next one is course equivalency exam. We have six courses that we use this waiver for. And this is so students can advance if they want to advance to dual credit or there's a course that they want to take, say AP, but they have to take a prerequisite. They can take the equivalency exam to pass that uh to meet the requirements of that prerequisite. and or a student who potentially could have moved in from another district who might be a junior
064or senior and they're missing one of those credits, they can opt to take the course for that. Approval. I'll second that. By also, second by Dr. Bordon. Any further discussion related on the course equivalency waiver? M. Yes. No. Um, is there is there any been any call for any other courses that need that uh exam? We haven't. And this this specific waiver we do not use very often. Um probably a couple times a year. So so far those have been the main courses that we've used it for. Any other discussion to be had? All those in favor of the course equivalency exam administrative rule waiver signify by saying I. I post. Same sign. All right. The last one is the required high school offerings. So um as you recall this one we actually did just
065a year ago and this is for oral interp to be used for the speech credit that students can earn right now. Um but because we had an update in language arts uh standards this year we have to update this document as well. So so moved second on the floor by sharp second by any further discussion related to the uh offering none. All those in favor signify by saying I. Same sign. Thank you. Right. And the last thing I have on the agenda is second reading of K12 language arts adoption. Any questions? Approves on the floor by second by Olsen. Any further discussion to be had on the language arts adoption? Mr. I would imagine our staff development days next year are going to be fairly packed with language arts materials and I would imagine the
066publishers are going to provide a lot of those training sessions or has that changed? It's going to be a mix of both. Yes, we just met today uh with part of the language arts committee to talk about that. Some of that will be specific to our curriculum and then some will also be just with our um reading of science instruction. Thank you. Any further discussion regarding the second reading and language arts adoption? Seeing none, all those in favor signify by saying I. I oppose. Same sign. Thank you. We do have need for executive session. Ask for motion executive session. moved by Sharp second by Dr. All those in favor by saying I
