009i talk about it so also i was able to see the harvest pops last night it was so nice to be all together they did a beautiful job and just the feeling of being in the auditorium again to have families being able to watch their students was fantastic i did get to watch two goals on the soccer game right before that which is also very exciting and although it's not based on student achievement or a national ranking system we are nonetheless honored to be named as the top three um in best of mid-hudson um public schools in the gypsy journal so um as a best public school system so we're really proud of that um this will be published in the newspaper on november 21st so we'll be hearing more about that and really we're

010nominated by our community which um i think is just as important so anyway thank you everyone who supported our district and and who um who feels that we are the best we are the best our staff is the best and our students and families so thank you everybody one more slide one more time so do you notice the little bags that are here it is also board appreciation week so um jay lucille and i have some gifts for you we just want to thank you all for your service um so this week i think began last week and heads into this week it's just the 17th just this week so um i want to thank on behalf of all of us all the staff students families and administration of hyde park i want to thank

011you all for your service um tremendous dedication of your time um and we're very grateful so there's little token of our appreciation oh thank you so much thank you thank you um overcome um yes okay um oh superintendent's report well we'll just can we flip-flop it sure is we're going to do it we're going to let you guys go first so tonight uh tom chester with the plumbo group and zach madison with cs arch we're going to discuss the roof issue at fdr that we discussed about a month ago we're going to give you an update and ask for your approval we don't have anything later on in the agenda but we want to have a discussion about it ask for your approval to move forward so i'll let tom get into the discussion thanks

012good evening everyone so as elliot just said we don't have an actual change order for approval we have proposals that we're looking for approval on so that we can move forward because the weather is coming and we're still negotiating so this is our presentation so if you remember it's about a month ago we had talked about the condition at the roof we had talked about different things we were doing trying to get pricing to remedy that situation and we hadn't gotten to a point where we were comfortable to come to you and propose something so i'm going to briefly go over what was previously talked about and then talk about where we are today so the condition i'm not going to read everything here this was presented about a month ago there's asbestos material that

013is on the roof that is very sporadically spread it's nearly impossible to get off without destroying the decking of the roof so we came up with multiple options and and that black material that you can see it is the asbestos material so we had come up with three options that we had asked for pricing on we did receive pricing we didn't even entertain it we decided to come up with some more options and then we got another option out there we talked about um we would come to you probably two weeks later with something and those numbers came in high so we went back and here's where we are today um this is where we were where we said we're gonna take this action we're gonna get this price we're gonna come back to you

014and look for an approval and the numbers just weren't there we had we had pricing that just just wasn't working so here's where we are the first set of requests with three options had a price that ranged from five hundred and forty thousand dollars to one point one five million dollars to take care of the situation that's obviously why we didn't come to you the second time we went back with the fourth option we got a little bit better we're still at 481 thousand we actually thought that was going to be a lot lower uh so we obviously knew that wasn't going to work so we went back and we came up with a third proposal a third option this this fifth option basically and this is what we're recommending tonight uh the general contractor

015has a deduct because somebody else is going to do their their contract work uh because it's asbestos related so they're deducted 70 000 as their proposed amount and united safety is the hazmat contractor and they would be removing the roof and all the penetrations in the roof all under a large asbestos project and then they would encapsulate that roof with a specific vapor barrier which would allow all the other traits to then go ahead and perform their work as if no asbestos existed so we have an ad for 206 000 so it's a net a net ad of 193 000. obviously this this number is considerably lower than all of the other options we are still trying to negotiate that down it won't go up we're trying to negotiate it down so we're seeking approval

016on that amount so that we can move forward with the work and we had a 500 000 contingency right now there's 453 thousand dollars left if you remember the first we had two one small change or one large change order the larger one was for controls on all the exhaust fan equipment as part of the project to make the hvac system work more efficiently and that work was never part of the original referendum so it does make the overall hvac system work better so that's where that money went and there was one small change order for adding some valves that were just outdated on the domestic water lines so we feel comfortable that the contingency is there to support this change um we have to change the roof so i i'm sorry can you just

017explain the contingency to me again i mean is that just a 500 000 that we've we put above and beyond our budget just for this exact reason so we build it into our overall project budget okay and we say this is what these are the numbers we want to hit for bid day and this is a contingency we're holding because you're an existing facility nothing's ever perfect you always you always find something you always hit something so we we put money to the side for those purposes to deal with unknowns it's typically three to five percent of the time correct right but but okay so it it's not it's not changing uh the overall project value right right it's it's built in right it's built-in so if i may yes please first of all thank

018you for your persistence going back to the drawing board five times that's terrific um as i read the previous slide um in preparation for this i think i understand that there's some of the best asbestos is going to remain and you're going to encapsulate it is that is that correct pretty much all the asbestos discussion so it's going to be encapsulation and build over that and so the the only question i have is to what extent is this kicking the can down the road right so how long is this encapsulation barrier for is this you know so there are millions right it's so the reason why we chose the vapor barrier we chose because we'll all be gone elliott will probably even be gone when the roof has to get replaced next time we want

019to make sure that when you replace the roof next time you're still gonna have to do an abatement project but it's a different type of abatement project that's much more cost effective because the encapsulation is already done so the vapor barrier we're going to choose is not adhered it's adhered down but it's it's not with asbestos so the roof will come off of it easier for the future when you do have to replace the roof and there are other options to re-roof without tearing it apart that's all we couldn't do that here because we're changing the space inside so drastically that everything that's going up through that roof is working for the space so there are other options where you could use a liquid applied material and just go over the roof and get a

02020 year warranty but that doesn't help us get any of the hvac to the roof it doesn't help us get plumbing lines and all the other things it doesn't work so until the school really even if you re-roof the whole thing with the same style roof it's still the best solution for that it still stays encapsulated but if the space inside doesn't drastically change you could replace that roof many different ways at a much cheaper cost and the 1.15 million was to completely tear the existing roof and put a brand new roof so that's what we have um zach's here with csr channel if you want to add anything i think i skipped one of the slides that was newer i talked about the effort you know csr put in with the manufacturing representative from

021carlisle the roofing manufacturer but yeah that's it unfortunately dan couldn't be here with us today but he's been leading up this effort on our behalf with our architect steve hollins and uh yeah he just wanted me to here to let you guys know that they have been talking with the contractors and palumbo and carlisle and really vetted all these options along with tom and uh we really feel this is the the best option for the for the district so and you maintain the same warmth nothing changes we're getting the same product same product the only ad is that vapor barrier and unfortunately like you said asbestos will still remain but it's now encapsulated but the big very last long been the product that you're putting on it is that i understand that vapor barrier is

022made of a plastic material it will be there forever yeah is this something um that linda is this something we have to we have to vote on how does this oh here no okay so i i believe they'll be not tonight obviously but there'll be a change order that would have to be approved by the board i'm assuming it'll be ready for the next meeting yeah we'll have it on the agenda on november 18th i believe it is uh as you know the deduct change order is not going to change the 70 thousand dollars from ocs that's a hard number that's the proposal there um the abatement contractor this this is what he feels is the worst case scenario and as we start to work if he feels that there's efficiencies or ways that he

023could pick up time the savings will come to the district everybody's right now if a roofing contractor does this job he controls what he takes off what he puts down how much protection he needs rain comes now i have two contractors involved i have no choice so now how does it the the coordination effort is extreme and i'm working double shifts to work continuously so we took a worst case scenario we had to so abatement will be at night next day correct no abatement no redundancy we'll be going in sections no no no no series weeks two weeks two yeah so like they'll do 400 square feet tonight roofer will come in and do 400 square feet of new roofing 400 more feet and we'll have to temp it in as we go work from

024one side to the next and this this amount is for both roofs we're only doing the one right now but this amount covers both roofs so we won't be coming back next year asking for the same thing if we get to that other roof and it doesn't exist which i highly doubt because it was built at the same time then there'd be a massive deduction on a deduct change order for it and it's easy to figure out it's proportionate square footage wise i don't expect that to be the case i don't want to go make a big hole in that roof with students underneath it so thank you very much i'm just so one clarifying point to mr tibbetts point so is there an estimate how long something like this would last for i think

025that's that's what mike was asking about is it something that could survive for 30 years 40 years 50 years just so the board knows the warranty is 20 years okay warranty the vapor barrier not on the vapor barrier that's going to encapsulate debate but the vapor barrier is a plastic material it's actually uh it's it's not going to be exposed to sunlight so it's not going to break down it's plastic i mean i would imagine the life expectancy is going to outlive pretty much all of us okay it's not exposed to elements so it'll be up there okay thank you all right um no other questions okay thank you so much okay thank you thank you okay and then we're going to backtrack and take a super introduction i just have one more item thank

026you so much um i wanted to address the lack of substitute teachers and substitutes in general in our region there was an article but i think it was just the online version of the journal and talked about several different districts and how we're all really struggling with this um so i i wanted to just say a few things about that um we have been able to keep our schools open every day um at times by utilizing our elementary teaching assistants to substitute for teachers as per their contract and and yet that's not at all what we want to be doing um so that again it's keeping our schools open but we are addressing this issue on several fronts um at the last board meeting we did talk about all the work the hr office is

027doing in recruitment processing adding new substitutes on on agendas and i just want to add a few other things that we're doing so we're also exploring partnerships with local colleges for intern programs other kind of out-of-the-box thinking about having um you know student teachers or others be able to substitute um also we're looking into raising the the pay for substitute teachers um to hopefully you know get get more people to choose us as as we said before that there's substitutes who um who work in multiple districts so you know we we all do compete for those subs as much as we wish there were enough for everyone um and also um looking into bringing back the the concept of a permanent daily substitute that's what we used to have at the elementary um and secondary

028and looking at perhaps at the elementary school where we don't have the option of covering um of teachers you know giving up their prep period to sub for each other that doesn't work in an elementary schedule the same way um so we're looking at at doing that so you may be hearing more about permanent daily substitute for each elementary school which would help a great deal and again we have a combination of stimulus funds available for that as well as fund balance that um that that i feel is is worth it so you'll be hearing more about that so i just want to share that with you all here thank you okay okay that brings us to us for our first public participation um as a general rule the public participation will be limited to

029three minutes total per speaker with the first public participation segment limited to 21 minutes the segment time may be modified by the board as deemed appropriate the board requests that remarks be courteous and respectful to all the board of education will listen to your comments and will respond after the public participation has closed um so there will be a second opportunity for public participation later in the meeting i just want to get my timer you have yours we do it differently oh well you're going to have to do it okay um may i have a motion to enter public participation please i guess all righty any discussion all those in favor any opposed okay we'll now um enter public participation is there anybody who would like to address the board please state your name i

030keep forgetting to say that every meeting so thank you can i take this off my glasses fog up when i read if you don't mind can i just take this down because i can't i i ask the people close to you but okay that's okay okay my my name is pat whalen and i'm here on behalf of two of my grandchildren at attendance school um before the clock starts could i just ask a question yes you said you a lot 21 minutes and three minutes per person if nobody else speaks can i get another three minutes at a different time if i don't get to read this whole thing yes i appreciate that thank you very much when and and typically what i'll do i'm just i'm no i'm rambling but typically at the three-minute

031mark what i'll do is i'll raise my hand that's just to tell you that you're at the three-minute mark you're approaching it okay and if you can wrap it up okay but i'm not going to cut you off i appreciate that if i read fast i i just rambled please please please okay well thank you um i'm very active in the board meetings and i watched your last board meeting and there was a remark made by jeff daniels and he's not here tonight and it was regarding other board meetings and he stated the meetings have been very contentious disrespectful and even challenging police officers that were in the building he also stated that this school board is quite lucky that the public are very respectful in your meetings well to address that part of what

032he said i agree and the reason that yours are very respectful is because you have an open dialogue and i've commended you this board i've i've even spoken about this board at other board meetings because they do not have an open dialogue so thank you for that um also what disappoints me is that this place should be filled with parents and i get it i get it they're working they have families they have to do homework and i understand that i know when i worked full time and had my kids in school i didn't attend board meetings but i think at this point in time there should be more parents here put to address his first remark i really believe he was probably talking about the arlington school board meeting and i was at that

033meeting and what i have to say is that first of all my dad was a police officer so i would never ever disrespect a police officer when we got to the meeting there were deputy sheriffs there they told us that in order to get into the meeting we needed to wear our mask and we did they also told us they were on our side but because once they put that uniform on they have to be respectful of who hired them and we got it so we went inside i don't know what happened outside when we got inside we went to do the pledge of allegiance so in honor of the flag we took our mass off said the pledge of allegiance and at the end of the pledge it says in liberty which means freedom

034freedom for all because we took our mass off they shut the meeting down we walked out was never disrespectful we even thanked the officers for their jobs and their service so for what he had said publicly i don't know where he heard that but he really needs to get the truth before he makes a public statement that that's what happened at that board meeting okay um first of all my heart is really sick about a lot of things we have been fighting for the children to be removing the mass from the children we're finding out that they are not healthy for them mentally and physically and now i just got an information from the um cdc crisis response cooperative agreement as of may 14th this year and the districts have applied and they're now receiving

035graphs and the money comes with strings and i have a copy for you superintendent that i will give you the terms and conditions are they assist the u.s government in inflammation and enforcement of federal orders related to quarantines and isolations and they must provide to the cdc copies access to covet 19 data collected and future directives will specify what data is included and what's the implications there's no metric data given to end the mandates can i continue thank you no medical privacy elimination of parents rights so we need to ask the school board when does this agreement expire and what are the benchmarks or metrics to end the mandates be provided how are the constitutional rights privacy and protections of due process secured under the cdc agreement also in receiving funds from the federal government

036you must follow their guidelines for teaching curriculum that many parents are opposed to you say that you don't teach crt but what about culturally responsive teaching under a different name with the same curriculum this is a tool that divides students and creates oppressed oppressive society i'm sure you all know of ben carson he was raised by an illiterate mother and she used to clean houses for very rich people and she couldn't understand how they became so successful and she realized there were many books in the house and they read so she had her boys read a book every week and do a book report so it shows that people become successful by learning reading writing and arithmetic without that they fail it's not because of their color also with due respect to you superintendent caviar

037you sent me an email and under your salutation it was pronoun she slash heart and a red flag came up and i questioned that and you said it's because you want to respect all people as far as i'm concerned i'm a he i'm a she and a her and you're a she and a her i think god created two genders male and female if a person decides when they're a consenting adult they want to change their gender so be it but i don't think gender identity should be taught in schools so if anything i'm saying whether it's critical race or whether it's gender identity if i am wrong show me i am wrong and i will make a public apology the only one good thing out of this pandemic is that parents are becoming more

038aware of what is being taught in school now there's concern from parents about being forced for vaccine mandates please i am pleading with you do not do this this should be a parent's choice and if this is because of the grant that was giving and you're in uh you you're in bed with them where you have to do what they're telling you to do without the consideration of these children this is wrong these are god's children please please when you go to bed at night and you put your head on the pillow consider these children and i'm a christian i don't know what you people believe in but there's a scripture in the bible that says let a millstone be put around your neck and thrown into the sea if you cause any one of

039these children to fall that's not my words those are god's words my heart is heavy if i'm wrong let me know and i will publicly apologize thank you is there anybody else who'd like to address the photo thank you uh thank you madam president uh good evening uh ladies and gentlemen golly stanford 181 marshall road um also i have the honor of being your representative on the boces board where i shall report with great pride your recognition as the best uh school district so thank you i need to get the details of that so that i can dazzle my colleagues with that at our next board meeting but actually i'm not here wearing the boces hat but the hat of i'm a volunteer at arts mid hudson uh and we talked a little just a

040month or so ago about the revival the renaissance of arts education in duchess county and really we hope across the state and i rise today because i i'm just so impressed that you feature art music and theater and i'll try to get there on saturday afternoon it's it's a toss up whether i need to go and knock on more doors on saturday afternoon or come and see almost maine but i hope i'll come and see that it's wonderful to know that you're back in production uh two things i'd like to share with you the new york state alliance for arts education that some of you may remember was a very significant and influential uh advocacy group for arts education across the state is back in business uh and i want to give a big thank

041you uh to your arts director melinda demaio uh who serves in a volunteer capacity on the organization we actually have a mid hudson arts education alliance right now going great guns and we really really appreciate her her input so that's the first thing we are actually having a summit meeting the first time in i suppose seven or eight years that the new york state alliance for arts education is meeting at bethel woods next week and i will keep you posted on that but the other thing i wanted to share with you is that the new york state education department has finally determined what the elements are for the arts pathway to graduation the four plus one and uh you're probably quite familiar with that but they will actually be soliciting pilots uh to start in

042school year so that our students who have a disposition towards a fondness for an interest in the arts will be able to pursue the four plus one three years of sequentially uh rigorous arts education in high school and that gets them to the to the region's diploma i think very exciting uh we have regent wills uh who represents uh us on the ninth judicial district uh she's actually uh very supportive of the idea that the mid hudson either an individual school district or perhaps a consortium of school districts might apply so just wanted to plant that seed i think as a hyde park resident it would be very exciting if hyde park was one of the pilot school districts for the arts pathway thank you very much madam president is there anybody else who'd like

043to address the board okay at this time we'll close public participation um as well and i'd like to just address your your first comment about um the conversation and the comments that jeff was making about other board meetings he was not specifically talking about arlington we've actually had some discussion about many board meetings um throughout the county um and things so i appreciate your your insight into what was going on in arlington and that's you know that's good to know and stuff but i think what his point was and i feel the same after conversations i've had with other board members um and specifically other board presidents because you know you know we all kind of you know help each other out and stuff is that we are very lucky here in the hyde park

044central school district and i'm really very grateful because we we this is our meeting right you know we're all here and everybody is respectful and you know we're really working hard to be cooperative in our community so i want to thank you for that and i know that that's indeed what jeff was saying i i happen to know that he was not specifically talking about arlington so i am grateful for your insight for that but i just want to you know speak up for him a little bit tonight um but yeah so i'm you know forever grateful to everybody here in hyde park and aviva would you like to to address um just some of her other concerns if you could either send or leave that information about the cdc i'm not sure what grant

045that is um so that i could absolutely we can do that tomorrow okay that would be good okay thank you yeah i'll have to look at this because this get back to me about it yeah i'll respond back so um yeah so this is information about this isn't the actual grant so this is information that you found related to the american rescue plan the arp funds okay because we all have been receiving those and um i'll certainly answer your question but to my knowledge it's not in any way tied to vaccine or mandates so i'll read through this um but that's not that's not anything i've agreed to so we at this point there is not a mandate for students to be vaccinated and um again that that's nothing tied to the federal fund so

046we'll have to see and we all know that um that's some statements the governor has made the department of health certainly has a say about it but right now there's nothing like that happening and we'll certainly be um communicating with families if that changes so that that was one aspect so again i'll copy this for the board and then respond to you about that the question about the federal funds and and having signed on for any kind of vaccine mandate so you know that said we are following the laws and regulations in new york state um and the guidance from the health department um currently and again that's not part of that but everything else we we are complying with that has come so that's why we're wearing masks that's new york state mandatory in

047public schools we're wearing them all day with children and so again we are in compliance but that was not a choice for funding [Music] and then there were there was a question about pronouns and and you know i answered that certainly for me that was a personal choice there's no board policy about using personal pronouns as you know not only a public school official that works with young people but also has my own 19 and 24 year old they're really teaching us a lot about their own advocacy about being themselves about being accepted i do know that statistically non-binary students especially students of color are more at risk for bullying transgender students more risk for bullying and suicide than any other student um so i can just say it is personal for me you know

048i love all our students and so it is a sign of respect and that's what our kids have taught us so that's what i'll say about that i don't know if i miss anything or if other board members want to comment i guess if i could just for a minute i happened to be at the meeting that jeff was at where this came up it was the dutchess county school board i'm sorry i happened to be at the same meeting that jeff was at where where this came up it was at the dutchess county school boards association meeting and so i can say that while arlington was represented there we were represented there pine plains red hook wappingers appalling maybe um but it certainly was not you know arlington did talk about issues but they

049all talked about it and so jeff was not responding to just the argument in fact my recollection is that the arlington representative wasn't the one who suggested they had the greatest problems um in terms of respect in in the audience and so i just want to reiterate um how much i respect the fact that um you are passionate and an advocate for for your grandchildren and and while i i disagree with with much but but not all the the positions you laid out i really do want to know how much i appreciate your advocacy for your children or for your grandchildren so thank you for that and i would just you know echo my colleagues miss barry and mr tibbetts that you know we appreciate people coming out to these meetings we like seeing people

050here uh people are certainly invited to come and thank you to our tech team for the people who can't come can always play the board meetings back you know virtually you know so we appreciate that these are very difficult times but everybody should have a voice in this you know as as we work through these difficult and challenging times and just one of the notes of gully thank you again arts education is so important you know we know it's not about paper and pen tests it's about creativity so the arts is a focus at hyde park and thank you um actually i'm sorry i didn't say i wanted to say you know to finish the first comments that i do thank you for um the respect that that you have shown me and and the

051board every time um that you've come and for um showing up and advocating um for what you believe in so i respect that a lot and i respect you a lot um and i want to thank you gully for coming and and always you know dedicating your time um to the arts and to our community and just to be clear about the the best um award it's we're top three not the number one so i don't want to misspeak i guess they're going to unveil what that is and again it's a little bit of a popularity contest which is great that's fine but i don't want anyone to think that we're ranked and that's what that is it's still nice yeah still nice to hear so um yeah and before we move on i just

052want to say that i'm i'm really kind of interested to learn more about that pilot curriculum with the four plus one that sounds really really interesting so i'm looking forward to learning about a little bit more about that i have to leave now can i can you give back to me about my questions about critical race and gender identity whether that's being taught in the school if it's not i'm telling you i will get up in front of the board and make a public apology but this is what i'm being told is being taught so and if it is comparing your children out of that curriculum thank you i appreciate all of you very much thank you and and you you'll get back to her yeah okay she will get back to you thank you

053thank you thanks okay um [Music] okay let's move on to um 9.1 board subcommittee reports um did anybody have any did anybody attend any committees besides me did you did you you know what last meeting we had just met with the special ed committee but i don't think we reported out on it so i just wanted to mention the special ed committee it's a much smaller group because of the confidentiality of you know the nature of special education but it was a really productive meeting um and really that's that's we are meeting i'm glad you're on that if i can if i can add to that i want to thank uh heather for shifting the time to accommodate my schedule i wasn't at the previous meeting but i will be here from here on okay

054so you're both on that i've lost track on who's on with committee i think i need a cheat sheet you know um i know that i we i met with the policy committee and we were you know we me every every meeting you see our policies so so we're working hard jay keeps us very much on track thank goodness um i also met with jeff and i are on the government liaison committee and we met with um the hyde park town supervisor rohr um supervisor rohr and the town of poughkeepsie supervisor beasley baisley i'm sorry forgive me oh thank you linda right here um so we had a really great meeting and we talked about you know it was it was a first meeting so we were kind of talking about how we want to

055structure them how often we want to structure them but i i just want to say you know that we all had a really good good talk about how our school districts and our towns you know need to support each other we need to be proud of each other you know i mean we're in hyde park right here and you know and there's a lot to be proud of in hyde park but there's a lot to be proud of in our school district too and i think that we really have an opportunity for the town and the schools to come together and um the supervisor of um oh no was it was it it was this yeah the town of poughkeepsie i mean he was saying the same thing he came up with some ideas we

056were doing a little brainstorming of some things that we could do together and um i think that we're going to see some opportunity there you know to just kind of share some pride with our town and our schools together so that that was really productive um and i oh those are the only two i was on i met right anybody else okay um bunch of board discussion is there anything that the board would like to to bring up or has anything to talk about did i miss something yes we do um so we're very we need to talk about having an extra board meeting in december on december 23rd in case it's needed to approve the new capital project um yes so uh might i say a few things please please jump right in so

057uh as you know currently the uh architect uh is working on the proposal for our next capital project which we hope to have a budget vote for in february um in order to do that we need to have a posting in the newspaper at least 45 days before the vote and the posting cannot occur until after the board of education approves the resolution for the project vote our architects were concerned that we only have one meeting scheduled in december they are planning to have everything ready by the december 16th meeting but they asked if we could either place a hold or schedule a potential meeting for the week after in case we do need that for the board to meet to uh vote on the resolution for the project vote so we did throughout december

05823rd because that's a thursday okay um i guess it could be any date that week um if the board would agree to adding a potential meeting um well of course i'll i'll agree to it another board meeting is anybody object anybody object to that why don't we is it possible jay for that week since it's the week of christmas could you put out a doodle poll for that week just to see what what day might work best for most of the board members to be able to come in and do that that would be helpful um thank you sure of course and the other thing is the board retreat um jay did put out a poll for the dates of december 7th january 20th and february 17th from 5 30 to 8 30 for for

059our retreat so if you haven't answered that poll please do so and hopefully we'll we'll get it we'll firm that down right jay i can tell you that right now i have two people who have not responded but of the people who responded the highest availability is on the february 17th date okay um and nisba is available to come um but they would like as much notice as possible so they can prepare uh what they're going to present okay so so maybe by the next meeting if we could nail it down well let's nail it down and let's send an email out to the board prompting pushing pushing our fellow board members i don't know who they are but it might be me so making sure that we respond to that poll okay it's not

060me i have no idea off the top of my head i can only remember that it's two i can't remember sorry i'm sure she'll gently just send it to all of us okay okay thank you jay for this all right so now we'll move on to the consent agenda um i'm all messed up here as amended right right as amended i have a little big note um so i'd like a motion to accept the consent agenda with the exception of items 10.13 and 10.14 which are tabled until the next board of ed meeting um may i have a motion for that okay all right any discussion i have a question okay um on 10.16 personnel matters i had not seen the term mentor before can someone explain to me what a mentor is it's a

061paid position right teacher mentor yeah so this is yeah part of the required first year yeah okay okay well do you want to just give a brief explanation yeah for anyone else who didn't get it in four words out in the public yeah so um in new york state teachers are required to have um a comprehensive induction and mentoring program in hyde park we have a really excellent program where teachers receive a stipend for being trained as mentors and then there's a three day new teacher orientation that happens before school starts where they learn all about the district and all about their duties a really nice collaboration with the teachers union and administration and then every month they have um professional learning after school sessions with the mentor and the mentee and there's also visits

062back and forth so the mentee has a chance to to observe the mentor and the mentor has a chance to come in and observe the mentee and give them all sorts of formal and informal support so we um you know have to approve the mentors whenever they're appointed when we have new staff new teachers thank you thank you okay um are there any other questions not a question but i just wanted to comment that um there's a donation from hyde park rotary oh thank you um and i just wanted to publicly thank the hyde park rotary every year they go to every elementary school and donate a personal dictionary to every student in the third grade across the district so that you know over time every hyde park student gets a dictionary um it's it's

063something that is just so incredible for the students they love it they they use it and i just wanted to point out you know how much we appreciate their yearly donation it's it's they come personally and hand each student a dictionary and it's just it's just amazing so i just wanted to say all right i'm so grateful that you brought that up because i actually have the letter that i meant to read at pride but it's so perfect that the former third grade teacher just shared from her heart having seen it there so i'm going to jump in as well and read the letter that i meant to read during pride the hyde park rotary club is planning on donating dictionaries to all the third grade students in the hyde park schools this is part

064of the literacy program called the dictionary project which is designed to aid third grade teachers in their goal to see all their students leave at the end of the year as good writers active readers and creative thinkers our purpose is to provide third grade students in this community with their own personal dictionary the dictionary is for the children to keep so they can take it with them into the fourth grade and use it throughout their school career a dictionary is perhaps the first and most powerful reference tool a child should own its usefulness goes beyond the spelling's pronunciations and definitions it lists it is a companion for solving problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading writing and creative thinking abilities teachers benefit from knowing that their students have consistent access to

065a tool for homework we feel a child can work better with the dictionary as a resource we hope that they'll use it and enjoy the results the approximate value of this donation is 924 sincerely the hyde park rotary and i should add that i'm a hyde park rotary member i meet with them every other week and it's just an incredible group so again i'm really grateful i would have felt terrible tomorrow morning when i realized that i missed it so thank you thank you yes i appreciate everybody jumping in i'm so focused on trying to like do the meeting that i do forget to to comment on something so thank you all um okay so no other discussion so all those in favor all right any opposed motion carries okay may i have a motion

066for 11.1 special education placements any discussion all those in favor aye any opposed motion carries may have a motion for 11.2 designation appointment any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries may have a motion for first consideration of policies any discussion um i have a question yes under 1900-82 198. this is the school parent contract under a parent's responsibilities there's a bullet point in this i'm sorry one second sure why aren't i coming to that oh there it is i'm sorry 1900 e2 and then near the bottom there's a bulleted list under parents responsibilities and the one that is is the suggested revisions there are two things one is in green monitor the other one is omit is rather than limiting it to television we might expand it to social media if this

067is a concern of ours then i myself watches very little television but she's always on is screen time like a really old phrase or does that still cover it screen but i want to make sure it's clear that it was inclusive okay thank you so screen time just for clarification so screen time instead of television or in addition to television live in screen time meant television but i would like it to be more inclusive so i don't i don't know if just using the phrase screen time is really gets the point across but i'll leave that to you guys to think about it how about screen time including television and social media okay something like that great suggestion thank you um so let me go back okay any other um any other discussion okay all

068those in favor any opposed okay motion carries uh i have a motion for 11.4 overnight field trip requests at villa roma calico new york for the thespian society okay any discussion all those in favor aye motion carries may have a motion for the overnight field trip request to myrtle beach south carolina for the varsity baseball team any discussion all those in favor motion carries uh any posts motion carries um may i have a motion for 11.6 with the lease with healthy kids so any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries um may i have a motion to enter a second public participation [Applause] any discussion all those in favor any opposed okay we're now in public participation as a general rule public participation will be limited to three minutes total per speaker with

070greatly luckily she's promised to come back and have lunch with the tech gang every so often depending on the retirement schedule but i thought it was worth noting um a great great individuals retiring from our district who's contributed a great deal to us and to our students thank you so much for saying that rick thank you [Applause] is there anybody else who would like to address the board okay we'll close public participation um are there any other matters steam i just want to comment and say you know how what a privilege it is to work with lucille and you know i've always like known her and worked with her before you know i came to work at district office and now of course i work with her directly every single day um she is so
