is rick here no oh wait a minute no wait a minute i think i'm in okay i thought i wasn't i was going to trouble again yes because you've heard me have to do that perfect okay welcome to the hyde park central school district board of education meeting today is august 26th would everybody please rise for the pledge of allegiance one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay i just want to put a plug in for our students to start saying the pledge of allegiance for us again as the school year goes on yeah okay that'd be great i think we might be out of videos for now but we'll get more okay um okay um number four agenda adoption um can i have a motion to amend the agenda i
move to amend the agenda by taking personal matters out of the consent agenda and moving it to 11.6 in new business you have a second second pivot okay um are those in favor or any discussion we have to say yes any discussion all those in favor all right any opposed any abstentions okay motion carries um may i do i have to do something that's what i thought we have a motion to amend the agenda that we just did that emotionally no promotion to emotion to make an amendment and then adopt the agenda okay you have a motion to adopt the agenda don't move damn any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries okay all right upcoming events um we're opening school up september 9th thursday two weeks from september today and everybody's coming
back and our next board of education meeting is also thursday september 9th oh this big day okay so i don't i will we'll schedule it for a district office but to to be determined right for the location we did have a facilities issue in the boardroom and that's why we're here hopefully it will be resolved in the next two weeks so we'll be able to go back to the air conditioning so i apologize to all our guests tonight it's pretty uncomfortable we'll manage yeah and i just want to point out too that um starting next meeting we're at seven o'clock not at six o'clock going forward for the school year yeah this is our summertime meeting okay um and when will our new student board member be starting that night too or starting at the
next meeting do we know i did tell her she it's her option she hasn't reached back out to me okay but i'll touch base with her again so she's welcome of course okay um okay is there any pride does anybody have anything to say we do there's some formal pride there maybe it may be on the slideshow and if not i'll just read it um amelia booth was the winner of the annual hyde park artist collective scholarship was honored with exhibition and reception um featuring her fine painting and ceramics work amelia is pictured at the event with her fdr ceramics teacher ashley thomas who's on the right amelia booth was the winner of the annual hyde park artist collective scholarship um i think it's double written here that's fine she was also selected as recipient
of the elaine goldman and ida snow scholarship in the amount of 500 for the 2021 academic year new york state art teachers association selected her for her commitment to the visual arts development of a personal voice or vision through her work and evidence of mastery within her chosen art form it is through the scholarship they send their support and encouragement as amelia continuous or educational goals in the arts congratulations amelia the next one i don't well i guess we do um each year the mid hudson chapter of the new york state school facilities association awards four scholarships to dependent students of an employee who's currently working in the school facilities position in the mid hudson chapter this year rebecca martz daughter of joel martz fdr head custodian received one of the scholarships congratulations to rebecca
all right thank you [Music] that's very exciting thank you yeah and i have a little other piece of pride which is that freshman orientation at fdr went exceedingly well the event was in person everyone was super respectful of the covet guidelines and the sixth grade orientation is going to be held august 31st next week anybody else have anything so i would just add that i did attend the freshman orientation as a parent and i wanted to thank uh mr aruela who did a great job of course mr sheldon for how the buildings are looking for rick work everything ran very smoothly thank you for everybody who came out okay we'll move on to superintendent's report okay so um we have section 9 guidelines i think i spoke about it last time but this is our
our fall sports guidelines so i'm sure they've already been shared with coaches and and families and boosters but i want to share it here with the public so section 9 will conduct the fall 2021 season in all sports indoor sports of volleyball and girls swimming except when in the water are required to wear masks this includes players coaches site personnel and officials game day cheerleading will follow the guidelines based on whether competition is held indoors or outdoors indoor sports will allow spectators spectators will be required to wear masks outdoor sports will not require mass for players coaches site personnel and officials outdoor sports will allow spectators with no mask requirements and section 9 reminds all schools to follow social distancing and all other mitigating protocols to keep all participants as safe as possible so that's
our section for sports and also the news that i read today told us that governor our new governor kathy hokel is directing the department of health to implement universal masking for anyone entering schools in the state in her first address as governor of new york hokal said she's working to establish a vaccination policy for teachers and school staff across the state she suggested schools should require the vaccines but allow personnel to opt out by getting tested for the virus weekly so that's in the news i don't have news for hyde park's response to that at this time but i did want to share that thank you you're welcome 7.2 capital projects update with tom [Music] risenthaler is that right thank you from garcia rcs arch so good evening everybody see ya i thought so so
tonight we're going to talk about planning our future capital project so from cs arch tonight it's tom rizenthar he will go through many of the concepts that we've talked about with our dlt and in other meetings um if there's any questions feel free to stop us at any time again this is just we're in the we're in the planning stages so we're very schematic designs and as we move forward we'll start to get some construction estimates from the plumbo group on it and then in the late fall early winter we'll ask for your consent and then go to a vote sometime in february potentially well good evening can everybody hear me okay yes thank you so just a quick agenda i just want to go through the team that is working toward putting all the
capital proposals together we'll talk about the proposed capital scope so you can see all of the different components that have been put forth for consideration into the capital project progress to date we'll go through the pre-referendum schedule so you can see what kind of schedule we're working on and then the next steps that we're going to be taking so if you have any questions during the presentation please feel free to either raise your hand or shout out we can certainly do that as we go along uh so let's talk a little bit about oh did i skip one let's talk a little bit about the team so of course uh cs arch is is leading the process of the consultant team but we do have um heflin associates for structural engineering is required again we're
looking at this conceptually but we want to make sure that we can give good detailed information to palumbo so we get a very accurate assessment of what the budget price or the estimate for the projects will be because that's how we make good informed decisions moving forward we have pastoral associates for civil engineering site and civil engineering the la group for site and athletic design and we have quest which has been in the district for a while doing the hazardous materials assessment so let's talk about the scope the various pieces of the scope that we're looking at we're going to start with the high school at fdr we're looking at replacement of the main roof at the high school certainly in native replacement this has been written in your building condition survey in previous years
and so we're looking at that as a roof replacement component we're also looking at continuing the hvac system upgrades that were started in the current bond that's under construction including a central chiller so that we can provide air conditioning to the auditorium and of course in a subsequent slide you'll you'll see the auditorium as part of the improvements so also at fdr we're looking at creating a new entry more visibility for the entry uh kind of spruce up the public entry to the building and we're also looking at you're going to see this across all the buildings we're looking at trying to provide some level of secured vestibule for entry of the public into our school buildings i think that's very important that we are able to properly administer a credential exchange and understand why
they're at the building before they're actually allowed into your into your corridor system so it's very common most districts uh either have done this or are considering and doing this currently so with the auditorium we're looking at various improvements uh house and stage lighting systems sound systems replacement of the seating in the auditorium as well as painting the auditorium we'll be working with an acoustical engineer that will help us with the sound systems making sure that we're optimizing how the district wants to have the sound quality within it we've been touring some auditoriums and i'll show you that in a little bit to get a real handle just to get some background information on what the potential for an auditorium renovation can be we're also looking at replacement of the water tank down in the
basement of the building which it will include an abatement of that tank so that's very exciting stuff i know and we're looking at also a new track coating to the to the track facility as well as replacement of the synthetic turf for those that don't uh understand sheriff does have a life cycle usually anywhere 10 12 years and we're going to be right there with the turf and your turf gets a lot of use so it's really at that point in time where the turf should be replaced now remember that's not completely replacing the entire system it's just replacing what i'll call the carpet uh the the broad loom product uh that's the green the infill material a lot of that will get reclaimed and reused and then we'll be supplemented with some newer material
but it's just the carpet itself so i don't want anybody to think we're redoing all the drainage and everything it's just it's just the replacement of the turf so moving on to havelin middle school again we're looking at auditorium improvements right now looking at house and stage lighting systems somewhat similar to the auditorium the sound paneling upgrading the sound quality in the auditorium and then painting that space as well we're not currently looking at the seating but you know at this point we can consider anything uh relative to the auditorium uh we're looking at new kitchen flooring which would also include abatement of the existing as well as and you'll see it every building new security vestibule with the associated door systems cameras intercomics etc violet avenue school here we're looking at a boiler conversion
to hot water and this will allow you a lot better controls within the building with that conversion new piping and equipment and a central chiller which will also include a uni-ventilator replacement what we also have to remember so we're looking at a security vestibule here but you have to remember violet avenue is on the national register so we have to really look at this building with a lot of sensitivity to how the historical preservation office is going to look at what we're doing and so we'll move through that process and that'll also you know have some impact on what we can do as far as the grill work with the unit ventilators we're going to be very respective because they want us to maintain uh this historic building so that will all be part of
this process at north park we're going to be looking at again the upgrade for the security vestibule i put this diagram in here so this just kind of shows you more directly is this a is this a i can't oh what'd i do no i got it i got it i figured it out so you can see that little red box that would be a secured vestibule so someone would enter into that vestibule there would be a window for a credential exchange to see what the person's business was at the school and then you would admit them either into the main office or into the corridor system so it really just provides that level of protection for the building participants uh ralph r smith we're looking at a new bus loop uh teacher parking area
and parent drop-off and pickup sequence i'm going to show you what some of those look like as well as a new security vestibule with the doors cameras and intercom so we've we've spent a lot of time coming up with various scenarios so and these are very preliminary we you know we're going to be reviewing these with various people at both the building as well as eventually with the dlt again so here you can see we're trying to develop a split between the parent drop-off sequence and the bus drop-off and pickup sequence so one way is kind of a double loop for the for the busing and a single loop for the parent drop-off now this is very preliminary and this would not really accommodate all of the buses so you'd see for ralph r smith
and this still doesn't get us quite that count but we have to look at all the different options we think it's important to explore and then talk about them another scenario a little bit different this is a single bus laying through through the bus bus loop now here's something a little bit different this is angled in busing this is really preferred by a lot of districts because the students can get off you know curbside and get on the bus curb side of the buses loop out so this is very preferred it's very compact it allows you to stack up a lot of buses now this isn't all the buses we would need so we're still looking at you know ways to improve that even further and if you go to the next one this would
accommodate the number of buses you would need you can also see that we're starting to look at ways to develop additional parking for the staff we're trying to stay away from that upper green area because that's where we believe your your septic system is and we're going to be looking at doing utility surveys to confirm locations of different equipment on site we're also going to be doing geotechnical so that we understand where rock is on site because that would be a big impact to anything that we would build from a site perspective so so this while it looks pretty impactive on the site um it would really provide you that accommodation and really streamline how your kids both get dropped off in the morning as well as picked up and and exiting the school and
then again there's different versions of this um and you can see we're reserving some areas for some potential additional parking but in all of these scenarios the key component is to separate out a drop-off pickup loop for cars and having a separate drop-off pickup zone for the buses to be in the most safe condition as you move through those processes so a lot of work still be to be done here these are all fairly conceptual and then moving on to hyde park elementary the building we're at now replacing the rubber section of the roof including the porticos uh new security desktop of course with the doors and camera systems at intercom the same at netherwood and then also installing a new well tank with the above grade building similar to what we did it similar
to what was done in north park and then all the new lines to the building and chemical treatment system for that water system and at the administration building the installation of a new septic system which is certainly uh well past its need to have a repair up replacement everybody with me so far okay so so let's talk about the progress to date so you can see we've been spending a lot of time doing doing existing conditions documentation uh we've completed tours of the auditoriums at red red hook and newberg and again this was to give the key stakeholders and players a real good understanding of what's possible and how we might approach it your auditoriums are unique so we have to also take that into consideration we're going to be touring pine plains who did
a recent auditorium renovation and i think we're doing that next next wednesday so that's planned for next wednesday so we'll have three that we'll have looked at to give us some good perspective about the possibilities that are uh that we have potential of we've received proposals for geotechnical and survey services they've been we've made recommendations to the district uh so soon those should hopefully be authorized and we'll get those uh services moving forward to inform our our process uh we're developing options for all the security vestibules i was gonna show some of them tonight but they weren't quite ready so i didn't wanna put them ahead of the time but we did develop the options for improving the bus loop at our alfr smith and i did show you all those options all but one
one i didn't like so i didn't put it in the presentation that's my my prerogative i guess and then we're developing refined scoping documents and this is a real important part of the process really developing that that scoping document for the palumbo group to utilize to develop early on all of the budgets that we present along with this to the district every step of the way no surprises we want to know what we're because look we have a we have a target of 25 million dollars that's the target for all this but all of this scope might not fit within that budget and we may have to have the discussions about you know how we approach that so we're going to get as early information on that as possible so that we can make those
good informed decisions relative to scope but the detail of the scope is what the priority is and what the budget is so just to show you the couple auditoriums that we've we toured this is newberg's uh auditorium in new newburgh free academy it's about 10 years old right now the the the the work that was done but most in the region believe that this is probably the best sound quality of any auditorium in the hudson valley uh it's really really uh the sound quality and it's not just because it was a cs arch project because we had an acoustical engineer that did it so um it's very very good sound quality um uh and this one's a little historic right it's got a lot of detail it's got a lot of historic detail that goes
with the building we then went to to red hook and red hook is very contemporary but red hook is all about performance it has every bell and whistle and system and and sound control that you could possibly imagine for an auditorium it's really really well done it's just a different character of the space or of the architecture itself but very very well done very well articulated very well coordinated so it was good perspective for everybody to see the the difference is and i'm sure when we go to pine plains it'll be much much in the same you know different types of seats different types of acoustical clouds and in lighting design etc so let's talk a little bit about the pre-referendum schedule so we're obviously moving through this process to develop the various scope that
has been presented we have had an initial meeting with the dlt to show them where we're at and show them everything that we're looking at we're going to have to continue to remove to move through this process to finalize the scope and budget of each of the components and ultimately i would believe it would be the dlt that would make a recommendation to the board of education for their consideration and then it's time for the board also to have their input and make their final print on the on the plan and then we also have of course the state environmental quality review act to move through so that's the seeker process and as you know we have to clear the secret process before the board can put up a vote to the public before they
can actually pass the resolution for a vote to the public and so we don't anticipate that there'll be anything more than a um a filing of a short form environmental assessment form you know ralph r smith is really the driving factor because it's probably the most significant impact from a site perspective um and so we'll probably have to at least do the short form um and we'll we'll have to look at and consider all the impact across all the buildings and then the board would get recommendation from the design team as to what we feel is the impact we'll be sending it out to interested and impacted agencies they'll have a chance to comment on the short form and then the board can hopefully declare this a type 2 action with no further impact and
then can proceed to the referendum as you know public information period is required as 45 days before a vote kind of the public comment period so we are originally targeting december of of this year but given what we have still remaining to do and all of the input we still need to take for ralph r smith and for all the vestibules etc we think that that's probably a little aggressive and probably will feel rushed so our current recommendations will probably have to be flexible we're probably thinking a vote sometime in february toward mid february is probably the right balance to allow us to go through and very effectively present all the information get the proper amount of input make the proper amount of revisions to that input finalize all the information for the board or
it's going to need time to review it as well and and then and then proceed from that point so right now we're looking probably we're looking at a february vote december just is a little bit too too quick to provide that so our next steps of course we're going to complete the survey geotechnical information and again that's important information that we need to guide our work as well as our cost our cost estimates for the plumbo group we're going to set a schedule to review the proposed capital scope with the various stakeholders that need to be part of that so it's going to be different from ralph r smith and the in the bus loop uh discussions could be different from the various auditorium discussions and so they're all going to be different groups of
of individuals we're also going to establish future dlt meetings because they're they're going to want to review all this information as it's presented and then ultimately recommend the project scope for boards consideration and then the board of education needs to review and finalize that for anything they might consider to put before uh before the voters again the secret process has to be complete uh and then ultimately the board resolution for a bond referendum and then and then the bond vote so i know it's a lot of information and a very condensed amount of time but are there any questions i think that's all we have i have a couple questions sure um for haviland why why aren't we considering doing any of the seating and havelins in the auditorium i didn't hear the question she
was asking about the seating at hamline middle school can you not hear me i'm sorry we have considered it at the moment the seats are are all intact there's no issues with any of them whereas at the high school the seats we can't get parts to fix them anymore and there are many that have actually had to come out because we can't fix them um some people like the seats that have one and some don't so it's kind of a a slight point of contention in a very chic but it doesn't match the building yeah it's con you know so it's something that if we could financially afford to do so we should consider it but we're trying to be considerate of the overall budget saying it's not truly a necessity at the moment now
i can appreciate that a lot i just was throwing it out there that i you know they'd love to have it be a you know a thought in the back of the mind we're certainly going to price it we are we are happy to price it out and review what level of quality of seat and everything just like we're doing for the high school we're happy to do that and i think we should and then i have another question about the vestibules in all of the buildings are they all are you are you trying to are you thinking about doing them all in the same way that you showed us like at north park there with with being something that's actually taking part of the lobby and creating the vestibule or are you bumping out
any of them are they all gonna look like that we don't anticipate currently we don't anticipate any of them bumping out it's a lot more money to bump them out as well okay but um you know violet avenue is a case in point where there's not a chance that they're going to let us bump it out it's on the historic register and we can't actually even put it at the interior so violet avenue is a unique case because remember when you go in that building there's another set of steps that you have to traverse and we don't have anywhere to put a lift or even a security personnel so that's going to have to be a unique situation that we're going to have to address and we've talked about different strategies for that and we're
still working our way through that most of the buildings do have like the high school has a very generous lobby these vestibules don't have to be very large so we've looked at the other buildings and these are glass enclosures so they don't really visually reduce the lobby from a visual perspective and you want that you still want to be open inviting et cetera but you do want to provide that first level of protection um you know we're in a different world now so we have to really understand that so everyone is going to be a little bit unique to to to them they all won't be exactly what i showed yeah i guess i'm just i'm anxious to see what you have planned for all of those and you know how that's going to violent
evidence especially that one's that was going to be a challenge so i'd ask the same question of ralph r smith because the office is all the way over across the hallway i'm curious how you do that well that's that's part of the discussion so every that's why i say every situation is unique and that's why we also want to bring the administrators into that conversation as to what the proper approach is some might be a kiosk some might be a secured vestibule i mean optimally we like to have the secured vestibule with a doorway into the main office i mean that's optimally so you have two steps before you're ever admitted into the co-order system because once you're in the corridor system you have run of the whole building so that being the perfect it's
like how close can we get to that and you know we want to make sure that it also works with how the building operates currently we have a save meeting planned for the first or the 17th i believe of september and we're going to bring hopefully all these plans to that meeting and let everybody you know give critique on them as well um and i want to add this was the next priority of district save for many years is the vestibule so it's finally coming too that's nice from life here yeah okay we've been talking about it for a long time [Music] does anybody else have any other questions all right thank you very much it's exciting thank you very very much um we're going to move on to seven point can i hear me
i i feel like i'm not talking into this um we're gonna move on to 7.3 district comprehensive improvement plan good evening everybody there we go okay so twice this year already i've had an opportunity to give you an update on the district comprehensive improvement plan what i'm going to share with you this evening is next year like a glimpse into next year's plan that was submitted to new york state a couple of weeks ago and this afternoon we received feedback from the state of new york that our plan was accepted and accepted without any revisions so um and that never happens well it's the first time i've ever filed it so we're one for one so just to give you a sense of the stakeholder participation in this we had a core work group that
was made up of the superintendent myself dr chadwell dennis mr shaw miss neisel and miss kreiser amy from the content areas and eric of course eric shaw from the middle school we also deliberately folded in members of our district instructional leadership team which meets multiple times a year and has representatives from across our schools and actually student members as well our guidance advisory council which i'll be sharing a little bit about their plan with you after this presentation was involved in this as well because you'll see there's some sel components built into that and then as we built our tier 1 and tier 3 sel curriculum for implementation next year we had to build a subcommittee for sel as well so we got input from all of those different stakeholder and participant groups in terms
of accountability status we have a district comprehensive improvement plan because we are what new york state classifies as a target district a target district gets certain supports and has to file these accountability documents annually having middle school is a targeted support and improvement school or tsi school and you'll see that the areas of you know that we were cited or areas cited for improvement include achievement for our our black students achievement for our hispanic students and absenteeism and achievement for our economically disadvantaged students in terms of looking at our district as a whole because the district comprehensive improvement plan not only supports haviland in their mission but it includes all of the other five buildings we look to support students with disabilities and achievement we looked for improvement in the area of black students in
achievement at fdr we were also pretty close on multicultural achievement at fdr and then we wanted to look at chronic absenteeism across all areas new york state supports us in this work by funding our comprehensive improvement plan and our school improvement plans with about a you know an infusion of fifty thousand dollars for the district plan and seventy five thousand dollars for havelin which is a tsi school you'll be hearing more from i feel like this mic is is it working okay or no it is okay it sounds really weird from right here um you'll hear more from principal shaw next month when he presents the essep the school concert comprehensive education plan to you at that time okay last year we shared five priority areas with you the state had changed their format this
year they allow you to select fewer priority areas but they want them to be deeper right so when we look at goals where last year this year we're looking at priority areas so there's three areas of priority for a decent plan the first is to create more equitable experiences for all our students that would lead to increased student engagement and attendance while decreasing any disproportionality in suspensions among our subgroups so you can see some of the areas that we were cited folded into priority area one area two is to align our curriculum resources our instruction and our assessments to the rigor of the new york state next generation learning standards and the four c's which is that vehicle we've talked about a couple of different times now the final priority area and i like how
they all look like priority area number one because it must have been imported from google and it likes to do that i'm going to just say they're all top priority so that's why they're all ones is to utilize a common data framework for continuous school improvement and to do that k-12 the rationale behind that is haviland has to go through that continuous improvement cycle with the state because of their designation as a tsi school but as a district we believe that it's our business and our job to conduct continuous improvement every year across our system so rather than wait for a district to be identified we're folding a common way of doing that into our practice across all six school buildings i tried to give you a little bit of a sense of what the
state asks for in each of these three priority areas so what i'm going to what i'm showing you here is sort of an abbreviated piece of the full multiple page plan that we submitted with this state so for instance for the creation of the more equitable experiences for all students for that priority area one we're looking right now to implement uh tier one social and emotional learning curriculum so tier one means that that's something that will be provided by the classroom teacher to all students all students have access to tier one support services a few months ago i shared with you the work of the sel committee but this was a year-long project where we looked at seo curriculum we had staff select and prioritize based on the castle criteria curriculum that they thought would
work best in their schools we had a full day on april 5th where we shared and had presenters for each of the six identified sel curriculum uh come out and share their work with us then we gathered data on each of the criteria area from castle and asked our staff to rank order and say which did they think would best fit the needs of their individual students in front of them we took that data i presented that to you a couple of months ago and for k-8 we'll be utilizing a program called second step for nine through twelve we'll be implementing what's called mindfulness in schools project if you go to the document posted in board docs you can click on those live links there and that'll take you to additional information on each of
those projects but essentially we'll start the implementation process in just a couple weeks on the 7th of september with professional learning on our professional learning day or teacher training day on september 7th we're committing the morning of uh that day to both of those programs to start the implementation process in the comprehensive improvement plan you'll see some of the gauging of successes what will it look like if we do this well we're gonna start to see student agency and belongingness the sections of our climate surveys that we'll be conducting in november we'd hope to see that those come back positive for fdr and for haviland who have baseline data already we piloted that with them a few months ago we'd like to see that their results stay the same or students reported a stronger bond
or feeling of belongingness in their school so that's just one of many metrics that we'll use to measure whether we're doing this well and of course this is going to cost us time space and funding that's where some of the funds from new york state come from but also a commitment from the district to provide time and resources to make sure that these are implemented with fidelity the next piece is we're implementing the bright program which i shared again with you as you know we closed out last year and i shared like what we'd be looking at this year well this is actually it here it is uh this is a tier two high tier two low tier three that means students that have an acute need in tier two or students that might have
a chronic need or like a different placement say a student has had an acute mental health episode and is hospitalized bright helps them transition back into the school the nice thing about bright is it's also a program that helps us meet the needs of students so that they don't necessarily have to transition out to say like a specialized day treatment or hospitalization so again we're going to implement that originally we had talked about implementing that just at the middle and the high school middle school this next year high school the following year part of our decept grant we're going to fund the portion we said we were but we're also going to fold in um to the federal grant the arp grant the other schools so we're really excited that rather than phasing this in
just at the middle school the high school next year and ending our project there we have an opportunity to phase this in k-12 at a time when we're transitioning all of our students back to full-time school again some of the measurements that we would use are listed here but essentially we want to have a shared language regarding sel between staff students and parents so we can all you know look at those castle criteria and be able to regulate our emotions our thoughts and really just show that kind of kindness and empathy to one another that we're all well we all need and we're going to need as we move forward the last piece is we're looking at instructional equity and what instructional equity means is when we look at the way that we instruct are
we taking into consideration the needs of all of our students so you can kind of see here that we're going to develop an instructional equity network as can be made up of like instructional staff from each of our schools they're going to engage in monthly planning meetings with the other members the goal is really to build what's called like cross-functional teams so that you have perspectives from everybody who's in our school community at the table sometimes we have like one team that looks at one thing and another team that looks at another thing having cross-functional teams allows you to kind of bring the thought and the power of the whole group together when looking at something so we want to build the capacity of our teachers and colleagues we're going to do that both asynchronously
and we're going to collaborate we've elicited the help of uh dr jill harrisonburg sorry just forgot her name for a moment there sorry dr byrd um and she's going to join us as a coach because we believe that by having someone as a thought partner and a coach to work alongside us in this area then we're going to be able to own the work and move that work forward beyond the life of this grant when we look at priority area 2 we're going to be implementing some progress monitoring progress monitoring are things that you do like checkpoints formative assessments throughout the year to gauge where students are on that spectrum of meeting the goals of the new york state standards and the four c's so we have a whole schedule in the plan of things
that we're going to use i talked with you previously about reading fluency you know about maps data and we're implementing six through eight something called reading plus we're also taking a look in math to not only just do our math growth but we're to also use something called map accelerator and map skills data which would give us like benchmarks throughout the year to chart the students growth in these standards throughout the year so we can make some real instructional decisions about ais we can make some instructional decisions especially as our kids come back you know with varying degrees of experience over the last 18 months or so of schooling so again we're trying to leverage all of our district goals and utilize the funds available to us from new york state lastly we want to
implement what we're calling a curriculum audit so we're going to pick 6-8 ela and math and we're going to do a deep dive on the curriculum that's being taught and we're going to look for alignment again with the four c's and with the next generation ela and math standards to try to make sure that we have high degrees of instructional rigor but more importantly vertical alignment throughout that middle school experience and this helps us support our tsi designated middle school finally we're going to extend the work that we started with our administrators this year with education for the future we're going to start looking at in the september time frame our demographic data what does that look like who are the kids that are in our buildings how's that stay the same or changed over
time what are the implications of that we're going to then start to analyze that for school improvement we're going to look at student perceptual data in november we're hoping to do the perceptual surveys and line them up with like like teacher conferences so that we have multiple opportunities for parents to participate both at home or while they're in our schools and we gather that data to look at what how are students and parents and teachers perceiving the educational experience we have i just said on the last slide we have data about student performance but since the new york state assessments have been canceled now we're modified drastically two years in a row we want to implement that progress monitoring and then look at that and then we're going to look at the fourth domain school
systems and structures and you can see sort of an agenda of what's going to happen different months of the year what the ultimate piece is the development of next year's plan so collecting the data analyzing it at the school and district levels using that data to dig deeper into our programs and processes suggesting modifications to our programs and processes and building that into next year's plan the last piece has to do with more of an exploratory part at our middle school or middle school is going to explore professional learning communities the works of the defores as a way to collaborate about grade and building level teams so they're going to we're going to hopefully put together a committee that's going to examine the four questions of the plc so like what every time we meet
we should be asking ourselves and each other what do we want all of our students to know and be able to do how will we know if they learned it how we respond when someone or a student doesn't learn it and then what do we do to extend learning for students who are already proficient in that standard so those are the four questions of a plc there's a lot more to it but we're looking to do an exploratory study of that this year then that committee will make some decisions give feedback to the district about whether that's something we might want to consider implementing in other in other buildings in the future go back because that's the last slide of this presentation so again it's just a follow-up on the presentation i gave in january
again in june and then this is the fruits of our labor all year in putting this plan and strategy together for the next school year does the board have any questions about the presentation i have a question i'm looking at how it talks about the disproportionality and suspension in subtle groups and i was just wondering um for those cross-functional teams that you mentioned um you mentioned teachers administrators has there been considerations made to have paraprofessional safety involved in some of this training because they are the first line of defense when a student is escalated or needs support yeah so i think if i well i'm not going to flip back to there but if you look at the plan that we're putting together right now we're looking at instructional staff for because we're doing instructional
equity but each of the buildings has a committee like a student some of the buildings call it like an at-risk student meeting or student support team meeting so that's what i mean by the cross-functional and there's different members from different parts of the faculty in each building on those teams so it's really about pulling them together [Music] because they're already on a number of those teams but being able to share that information across team but that so that does include safety and paraprofessionals or no because those two meetings typically are support staff like social workers and i'm sorry i'm having a really hard time hearing you with the fan behind me i think you said does it include safety and support staff professionals yeah tas i i believe at the high school at least i'd
have to check about the middle and elementary schools yeah i know in terms of the building actually they're called emergency response teams now i think not building safety teams that those teams do have paraprofessionals on them and the building leadership team also like also has paraprofessionals parents on them but year one of that rollout with jill harrisonburg is teachers and administrators and that's really about that core group that then can really like turn key exactly thanks and sorry kim so i have a question on the um you know how the strategy works you're talking about using maps is that going to be able to compare schools to schools based on that or is how are you planning on we've always tell everything changes every year how are we going to use this success from year
to year how are we going to measure that yeah so the the maps data i know we talked about that at our last meeting it doesn't change every year they do a realignment of that every like three to five years so it just so happened that their three or five year alignment took place a year ago so yes it is a standard unit of measure and we would be able to compare those scores across our buildings and then that is like compiled against a nationwide data set that's norm so it gives you information about where our school or our district's performance lines up with similar districts across the country and i'm mike yeah yeah thanks great um of course i'd like to commend you in the group on on what is clearly a a a
carefully thought out plan um can you please speak up sure we're closer yeah is that better all right so first i want to commend you and the group on what's clearly you know a really well thought out comprehensive plan the question i have is do we have achievement benchmarks and if we do do we have a timeline for a cheat for for reaching each of those benchmarks i mean you said you're looking for improvement but is there a particular what's the end goal and what are the benchmarks so the answer to that is yes in the elementary school in particular like i'll use um like literacy for an example when we're benchmarking that we would use lexile scores for students with maps it would be like a ritz score and you would look at those
scores against what the like on grade level equivalency would be so yes there's measurements and that's that's what we would be looking at when we're benchmarking throughout the year we look at where do our student where did our students start we look at what the traditional grade level equivalent scores would be and then we would track their progress throughout the year we do that like two to three times a year now we're looking at multiple ways to do that so that when we recommend students quarterly for academic intervention services we have a richer multi-source and multi-point data to make like better informed instructional decisions not just about an individual student but about the instruction we're designing for our whole classroom or a grade level or a school i have a question about the second step
for elementary um it says that there's gonna be training awareness training but i i thought we'd mentioned in a previous meeting that social workers were delivering those lessons and since you said this is gonna be tier one now is that going to switch over um are social workers still responsible for for that program or is there a change so so thank you margaret i am still having difficulty hearing everybody are you you're talking about the tier one seo and you're asking who's delivering so at the elementary school the tier one sel is to will be delivered by every classroom teacher so every classroom teacher will be trained there's in if you look at the step or second step there's roughly i don't have the numbers in front of me but there's about 15 what they
call core lessons like k2 and then there's a few more maybe up to 20 when you look at three five and then there's even more than that when you look up to grade 8 i think it tops out at 26 core lessons at the elementary what they have are extension activities around that and each lesson depending on the grade band k 2 or 3 5 run anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes for that core lesson and then there's a whole like list or group of extension activities that could happen in like a specials area that could happen you know more intensively with a school social worker or psychologist if you were having like a tier two intervention like a small group but the idea is that if you're looking across the entire grade span of
your building you're focusing on the same skill at the same time so the efficiency of that is school announcements can be geared around that special recognitions could be geared around that um but yeah so that the delivery would be at the classroom level instead of like a push-in which would be more of a tier 2 type service and then just a question on the mindfulness for on the secondary level is that correct you're saying it's 10 to 12 teachers being for one cohort that will be trained and then a second so that's only a quarter of not even a quarter of the faculty so what's the yeah so the the mindfulness in schools project implementation is very different than the second step implementation so similar to like the ruler i don't know if you're familiar
with ruler you're not in your head so you are the the first year of ruler implementation is only adults like you don't practice the ruler approach with students until you've done that work yourself mindfulness in schools project is very similar so what happens is there's an experience for the staff to develop their own practice to learn about mindfulness to practice it and then to come together in the summer to do the details are in here but it's called a dot b training which then allows you to do that work in your classroom so second step is more of a curriculum and a lesson based program mindfulness in schools is more of a philosophical program that you learn the philosophy and then you implement the curriculum like as a follow-up to that so i probably provided
you with too many details in the presentation but i wanted to give you as much information as we submitted with the state but that's a two-year implementation process right so there's only the year one and then year two so answer your question i think jesse about about the number of people there would be more cohorts of people going through but this is a one-year grant so i'm only giving you like a 10 to 12 month window here but that work would continue into year two anybody else have any questions okay great thank you very much you're very busy well i'd like to say that someone else is doing the next presentation but it's me again so i wonder who the porsche is that's given the next presentation yeah okay um so thank you and so
we'll move into the guidance plan yeah we'll go into the guidance plan next so this is something that changed with the update in guidance requirements last year so we hold multiple times a year a guidance advisory council meeting we have guidance counselors social workers actually i'll show you all their names right here but every year i'm tasked with reporting to you the work or an update on the annual report for the plan so this is more of a retrospective on the work that was completed last year and i'm going to give you a little bit of a window and i've included in the board docs the actual plan for next year so you can see here that we've got you know quite a nice group lots of familiar names but it includes you know count
school counselors social workers administrators psychologists parents and teachers all on the guidance advisory council in 2020 21 we had three goals objective one was to communicate with parents and guardians to of students progress and involve them in the academic and social emotional learning of their student we also sought to help students um who exhibit attendance academic or behavioral concerns um you know to help them with their education and their life things that would impact them so and lastly we wanted to develop maintain and support the social emotional health of all of our students you're starting to see some synergy and some common language between these things that's not by accident so when the guidance advisory council is working they're working under the umbrella of what the dlt and the dcip have guided as areas of
focus when you start to see some of these other plans and things that come out you should be seeing common language and each group is supporting those bigger goals just in their own specific ways so the elementary group got together and shared and we talked about each of the objectives and they provided some information about steps that we've taken towards them so in elementary we had um families receive the second step program and margaret you mentioned before that um like school social workers were doing that that was in a pilot phase last year so that was all because of the guidance advisory council's work the year prior so that's what we did this year and now we're moving that forward to everybody there was also sel program materials that was shared with students and that
could be used at home they implemented regular positive behavior interventions and supports you would know that as pbis there were notifications that went out and teachers clinicians and administrators were involved in that there were also like a series of award ceremonies many of which were provided virtually so our pbis programs moved forward and we tried to praise the good work of students in the areas of like student achievement attendance and positive behavior and we did it virtually when we had to last year in objective two we collaborated we used a collaborative approach among the teachers and clinicians when responding to behavior issues and concerns so there was less of if we had a behavior issue send that child like to the principal and we provided more of a holistic approach where we started to look
at what might be some of the antecedents to the behaviors themselves we looked at class and individual student attendance incentives i'll give you an example at ralph r smith there was a chart in the main lobby that tracked attendance by class and this was both to the virtual sessions and to the in-person sessions last year which made it really like interesting you know and there were incentives like pizza parties or just class recognitions when we couldn't do like food in group settings there were also a lot of individual phone check-ins that happened from the classroom and from the support staff in each of the elementary buildings and we saw an increase in home visits that were conducted as appropriate so that was a really important piece of the plan was how do we get our
clinicians into the field if we've called multiple times and we're still not seeing a student say log on to their google meet or attend school finally social workers and psychologists are now in every elementary building this isn't new news but again this was goals developed a year ago and something that we're happy that helped you know promote our objective three we used the community resources and and made referrals to different providers outside of our school we provided resources pertaining to childhood development and there was a district-wide crisis team which provided counseling support to buildings as needed so when there was a crisis we activate that team and we provide additional counseling support to all of our elementaries but frankly to all of our buildings we look at the middle school the middle school did this
a little bit differently they changed their communication to parents and guardians with their google classrooms with their google sites they asked and made specific changes in report card comments they used and issued perceptual surveys to students parents and teachers reviewed those as building level teams they increased parent involvement in their blt and continuous school improvement work they used what they call the good news report cards for pbis in the middle school the counselors really made a concerted effort to consult with the academic teams and if you know at the middle school they're teamed at each grade level so there was push in counseling support and some of the second step lessons were actually done by the guidance counselor at the different team levels at the middle school which was great and then they provided meeting
flexibility for parents so not just like meet the teacher night virtual but when we were able to have people in person we still gave the option to parents and we saw our attendance actually increase in many of those meetings which was which was wonderful i'll kind of skip down a little bit you can see on the screen here there's lots of different things that they did to try to like address behavioral concerns and that was from even at home increasing wi-fi access we saw increased frustration when students couldn't log in we provided laundry service food school supplies and clothing to students and families in need again we made those community service referrals to different agencies connecting parents and students with resources lots of home visits from the middle school they probably led the district in
the number of home visits they did and they had a specific plan and a team that met in know weekly to talk about students that weren't attending which was really great and then they started providing counseling support to parents and students so the guidance counselors were finding themselves having lots of conversations with parents helping them navigate the hybrid learning and the scenarios that were happening last year i have some actual statistics for the high school i'll share with you in a minute they had that monthly at-risk meetings we talked about they created a chronic absenteeism team which you know we started counting how many kids are out and then we sent you know members of the faculty to their home to invite them and to create pathways for them back the second step lessons we've
talked about already and then the counselors actually provided separate surveys to the students about their experiences at the high school same three goals you can see similar things here but the google classrooms and outreach the actual guidance counselors created that they created a google site and some of the guidance counselors utilized new ways of allowing parents to schedule like virtual meetings with them where they could go in and like reserve a spot which actually worked really well they increased the home visits for attendance concerns they had at-risk senior wednesdays so the counselors got together on wednesdays who had seniors and then started having like conversations right at the beginning of the school year who's on track who's not what can we do about it and then they would do that every week so students i
know a handful of them because we had conversations with move from hope we're concerned nope they're back on track we're concerned they're back on track and that really contributed to keeping many of our students on track for graduation [Music] the guidance counselors wanted to include this one and they're very proud but they were strong advocates for getting students back to four days a week as quickly as possible and they worked tremendously hard when we had limited space and time in building the criteria to get our kids back and finally i just wanted to share the scope of the work at the high school but there were 2414 in-person visits to the guidance office they didn't collect data for virtual sessions and then that you know what they wanted me to share also was that there
was an additional number of meetings for social and emotional support and what they what they said was and it's not in the slide here but this was even when students were only in the building two days a week so students were in the building half the time and they saw like a sharp uptick in the number of students that came in to get help to get guidance and to get support so they were really pleased with their ability to provide that for everyone and we're actually i mean we're really proud of them for doing that so what is the what does this look like next year to continue to move these goals forward we want to continue and like learn from you know the pandemic we want to learn from last year's experience we were
looking for ways to keep our meetings flexible for parents so that they can join from work you know instead of having to take a day off to come in so we're looking to increase and maintain our flexibility the chronic absenteeism team which was piloted last year is going to continue they saw a lot of success with that they want to continue the attendance and incentives at the elementary school along with the home visits and then they want to use technology to support students and parents so maintaining those guidance google classrooms and google sites will be a really important way to do that finally things we're going to add is there's discussions about reimagining what we call an at-risk team and recasting that or reimagining that as a student support team or a child study team
and both of those have slightly different criteria so that's something they want to look at they want to fully implement the tier 1 sel supports that i shared with you as part of the dsip for funding that in part out of the dsip they want to fully implement the tier one or sorry tier 2 and tier 3 stl supports k8 for the bright program which wasn't in our original proposal and then there's the addition of some clinical staff through the federal grant where fdr is going to receive an additional social worker or psychologist and a behavioral teaching assistant to help provide those transition services through the bright program the middle school is going to receive a social worker behavioral teaching assistant already hired and being trained now again to support the bright program and then
each of the elementary schools will have a teaching assistant who's trained to be a behavioral teaching assistant for each of their schools in support of those kids in the bright program and transition so this is uh this is what we've done this is what we'd like to continue to do here are some of the things that we're adding and then of course we're going to go from just providing climate surveys at the middle and high school we're going to implement that at all the elementary schools this year as well so with that i'll entertain uh any questions you have on the update on the guidance plan and the work we did last year i don't have a question i just have a comment um this was such a great presentation to see all the positive
things that the staff has been doing to reach out to students we know that this was a difficult year last year and just to see how many home visits are being made and students who are accessing guidance and support and that our guidance counselors are so excited that students are reaching out for help it kind of is a little bit of a bright light to see all of the great things and i love that um some of those uh things that you're going to continue to provide are you know are listed um so just great job just just really a nice nice thing to see how hard everybody worked last year thank you for that i agree i mean all of our staff did a tremendous job last year under circumstances they've never experienced nor
were trained for before i do want to say that our guidance staff are probably like the most unsung heroes in last year's experience we've spoken a lot about the great work that teachers have done that administrators the time that they've put in to keep our kids safe but our guidance counselors have provided both that systemic and that acute support to families when they needed it and they found really creative ways if the kids weren't coming in they went to them so you're absolutely right rachel anybody else i thank you for all of this um but you this is off topic but it's something i just wanted to to put in and say when you're talking about i'm continuing meeting flexibility you know virtually and in person i just wanted to um say too that i
heard a lot of really positive things about the parent-teacher conferences being held virtually last year and i know that's not necessarily under this umbrella but i just i just wanted to say that one more time that i hope that going forward that we might be able to do something like that for for our parents um when that time comes during the school year thank you i agree we're in discussions about how those things might come together and the lessons we've learned and we'll continue to learn great thank you thank you you're welcome and i don't have the next presentation so thank you all for your attention all right let's see um okay 8.1 public participation as a general rule public participation will be limited to three minutes total per speaker with the first public participation
segment limited to 21 minutes the segment of time may be modified by the board as deemed appropriate the board requests that remarks be courteous and respectful of all um now so the way this works is that we'll listen to your comments and then after public participation closes um we'll offer our our comments back so i do have a timer here so we are we are going to stick to the three minute doesn't mean i'm going to cut anybody off but you know when i raise my hand it means you're at the three minute and please please wrap up um your statements so that being said would anybody like to point of order you need to have a motion oh i always forget that may have a motion to enter public participation so move jeff thank
you second second jesse any discussion all those in favor all right any opposed any abstentions okay that all being said would anybody like to address the board podiums up at the end of the other room good evening board and superintendent my name is pat whalen and i'm here tonight to speak on behalf of two of my precious grandchildren that attend this school first of all i want to commend you superintendent for having an open forum last week where parents could call in ask questions and get immediate responses that's not done in all school board meetings my husband and i attended the last board meeting in june last year where the mass mandates were off and for the first time we saw your lovely face and it was really great so with all that being said
now we're wondering why and i know you spoke about this at the urban farm they were wondering why after a mask-free summer for kids that attended summer camps vacationed out of states had sleepovers at friends homes and are now being forced to wear a mask again somehow did the virus take a summer vacation as well and according to the cdc children under the age of 18 have a 99.98 survival rate when i was a kid we had mumps measles and chickenpox and you know my mother did she threw us all into a room and we all got it that's called herd immunity but then as the years went on they decided they needed to create a vaccine for that we had childhood diseases we didn't die from that so they they got the vaccine and
their parents didn't want the kids to get it so then the parents couldn't put their kids back into school okay with that being said is there any way that you can post on your website the mass safety studies that you researched before you made this decision that mask need to be won again a recent study from cdc shows there is no scientific rationale for forcibly making school children wear masks when analyzing more than 90 000 elementary school students in 169 georgia schools from november 16th to december 11th last year the study found that schools that masked their use mask was statistically significant compared with those that didn't and the executive director of the who organization stated there is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of mass by mass population has any particular benefit
and there's evidence to show that it does not protect the wearer of any viral transmission as the holes in the fabric are larger than the virus so did they reconstruct the mask or did the virus get bigger and i don't mean to be rude but the mask doesn't protect the virus from coming through and also you say that the children don't have to wear them when they go outside hopefully they don't have to wear them when they go to gym but how about one of you ride the school bus on the way home for a 30 or 45 minute ride and see how your oxygen level is going to drop because this is what happens to these children hear my heart as a grandmother as a mother when i was a young mother i didn't
go to school board meetings i'm just going to do this quick i didn't go to school board meetings because i worked full time my boys were in sports i didn't have time so i do not fault parents that don't make these meetings but i'm going to a lot now i belong to moms for liberty these parents need to get their rights back you don't make those decisions i'm talking about critical race i'm talking about gender decisions those come from the parents where is reading writing and arithmetic that's what counts in the schools let the parents get their rights back and let it be optional they make the decision not you thank you would anybody else like to address the board okay at this time we'll close public [Music] participation would anybody like to come in
i mean i'll start um i want to thank you pat for your civility and in all of our interactions that you've had i really appreciate that and just like you said you appreciated how things are working in this district i appreciate because i've heard that not everyone is um so respectful everywhere else so i am grateful to you and to our community who has expressed themselves but always in a respectful way so i want to thank you and everyone else you know as i stated earlier there was that point in time when superintendents had to make the decision about mass in the fall and i did and then the new governor has made the decision for all of us at this time that said your question about studies because i know people have shared different
studies and then our state commissioners and i'm sorry our county commissioner and cdc and others have have shared other information which is also what i use to make my decision initially so i'm hearing what you're saying and i think we can post some information so people can see you know and again i'm not a scientist but the information meaning what are the guidelines from which groups um did i make that decision at that time so i can do that thank you can i can i make a comment yes please i guess i guess i'd like to preface my remarks with some context i am a phd geneticist with over 30 years of reading and teaching peer-reviewed biomedical research literature the point i tried to make at the open forum i'm going to try to make
again well first of all let me say i i understand the frustration i really do understand the frustration we want the scientific community to give us definitive answers with a high degree of certainty but there are a couple of things that confound that the first is that the human body is remarkably complex on top of that there's a tremendous amount of variation among individuals so not everybody's body responds the same way on top of that we have a virus that evolves much more rapidly than our systems do so with all that being said one cannot rely on one or a handful of studies to come up with some definitive conclusion one has to look at the totality of the research and to take into account things like statistical power and when one does that the
evidence really does overwhelmingly support the notion that wearing masks the right kind of mass and properly reduces transmission and reduces community infection rates it is also not possible to make a strong case that wearing mass has a detrimental physiological effect could anybody else like to come in thank you and we'll move on to board subcommittee reports um did anybody has anybody had any meetings yet for the committees i know the policy committee is meeting on monday right the ldl teamwork the dlt mat do you want sure so the district leadership team for those who don't know that um is a team of people across the district from every every area every group and we met and there were over 25 people in this meeting i was really impressed with the amount of people who showed
up for a summer meeting it was virtual but so there was representatives from every school building every area of um every job description in the district and and discussions were had about how to roll out uh the reopening the physical reopening of how to how to um how to start the school year as orderly as possible it went really well really really impressed with how many people were sharing their ideas and that it was a whole district initiative it really wasn't just two or three people it was a large group um who shared their ideas so it went well thank you and i'm sure the meetings are going to be starting up we probably all have them on our calendars going forward okay we'll move on to board discussion i wanted to continue our discussion
on our board goals oh thank you jay was nice enough to um take notes at our last meeting so that we could all remember and follow along um we talked about the the last we talked about we were trying to think about topics for our board retreat um i don't know has anybody had a chance to come up with anything i came up with with an idea aviva and i were talking about it and she helped me cultivate it does anybody else have something they'd want to bring up what were you what were you thinking i know they're curious before we kind of curious um i was i was trying to think of you know in the past what we've done is we've kind of picked a topic and we've we've kind of you know
done some extra um learning on on specific things one year it was about understanding our debt service and our strategic plan you know financially going forward with the district another time it was talking about diversity and equity within the school another time it was about about board goals that we had going on i'm trying to think of some of the other topics i know there were some jeff do you remember what we i know but anyway so i was trying to think of of what we could all benefit from that that might come up and so i was leaning towards that goals and aviva just shared this with me now nisba um is doing what they call a board officers academy so it's taking on the role of the board officer means becoming a leader
among leaders whether you're a seasoned school board officer a board member interested in learning more somewhere in between nisba's boat officers academy provides the building blocks for leading and effective school board this year's topics are roles and responsibilities of the board officers improving school board effectiveness [Music] what is it d.e diversity thank you diversity equity inclusion and education and board president panel discussion so they're offering this they offer it in latham on september 10th and they offer it virtually on october 15th i mean the times aren't ideal but i was wondering if any of us could go or they were interested if you guys liked this topic or wanted to continue to think about something else how how would we consider that a board retreat i don't know it was just i mean the board
retreat is meant for the board to gather together and then kind of come back and collaborate a little bit and then it wouldn't be a board retreat we were all doing personal development and sharing that would just be personal development which you can do in addition which we can do in addition so i guess this doesn't really qualify as a retreat but i don't know i just thought it was kind of interesting for all of us and wanted to pass it along well my other thinking was that if not all of those are relevant necessarily that nisba puts together training for boards so you could have a nisbo retreat knowing that they already have modules on those topics or you could choose other topics so it was just more thought that they're part of that
they can produce that well that would be so much better for me actually because these dates didn't work very well for me so they were stressing me out a little bit but um but i don't know i would love to do this i mean we could bring a representative from nisbet to talk to us about it so i would like to just point this out and have everybody kind of mull over this i'll send this to everybody and we can talk about it unless you know somebody had something else that they were kind of interested in and we can talk about that too i like that they included uh diversity equity and inclusion i it might have been done in the past but i think that's something that we could revisit at a board retreat
if that's i agree i absolutely agree so okay so i'll pass this along to everybody and we'll talk about that and maybe we'll try to schedule something i mean typically um i think a retreat the timing is good in like either december or january i think that's what we had talked about doing so you know we'll see how we can work that out so that was one of our topics um [Music] we actually went did we actually go through all of these last time i guess we did that was something i was gonna oh no one to ask do we i like what greg said before how you're doing lesser goals and going deeper in the goal and i think this is all these are a lot of goals there are a lot of 15
or 16 i i don't know if they are i'm i would be happy to to con you know condense this a little bit so let's let's focus on one section let's talk about um [Music] budget and administration we have three keep as is and then one removed so we've taken one out there um board administrative operations for the board retreat that's that's one and the professional development i'd like to i would like us to keep that i think professional development is always a good thing to keep say we said we wanted more discussion on how to measure so i'm number two under academics and we were removing three so we've taken out a couple margaret do you think we could take out some more let me see i haven't technology come back to this first
one let's talk about that then um receive a presentation giving examples of how technology supports or is being integrated into the 4cs initiative include how we are meeting the needs of students and staff were you talking about eliminating that well i'm wondering if if that's covered in one of our other goals a little bit or one of our other presentations that we're getting i mean it should probably should be in the academics because that's where it's they're tied together okay so let's go back over to academics we are removing one of those i mean could that be part of the part of number one you know we say receive a report from the strategic planning committee on rolling out the critical thinking initiative using the rubric establish a baseline use fall testing compared to follow
this spring testing was not available due to covid we have that to keep it as it is i mean do we want to also kind of include include the integration of technology and how that's working with those at the same time i mean can we combine those because the technology one was receive a presentation given examples on how technology supports integrating the four c's initiative and then we also have the guest speaker could maybe that be tied into part of the retreat rather than separate goals well usually a retreat is the tire force on one topic so making it multiple topics makes it a little more confusing can i just point out that so far what we've been doing is shifting the positions of things right if our concern is there are too many goals
one has to then make the difficult decision is which one's not worth being on there and i'm not sure i would think say any of them are not worth being on there although although i do sympathize with this notion that there's a lot yeah i do too well i think you're drawing attention to things and that may be where it's at because like the high school they're all over graduation rate it's not like you need that goal to remind them that they should think about that however it's up there because it's important to the board so you know that's one example where it is being addressed whether it's in your goals or not so that's the kind of thing you can think about because it's not it's the fdr presentation anyway you receive it as
a matter of course not important we're saying it doesn't need to be up here and it's always been part of the presentation the annual presentation from the fdr principal um goal number two under academics i'd like to look at a little bit more closely because i agree we need to look at the effects of covid but we're always focused on the testing results and after seeing greg's presentations on what guidance is doing and what the district uh comprehensive improvement company is covering um it's not all about the test scores um i'd like to consider having a goal where we're looking at our priority is to educate the entire student which would include of course the academics but it would have that social emotional component and it would have the health and safety component um because
a lot of this is the academics and yes we're schooled we're concerned with the academics but as we've seen the last year there's so much more that goes into educating a student and i just didn't see that in the goals that's just my two cents i'm just wondering how we would put something as a combined thing that does emotional development along with academics because this is really in the academic section so i wonder how we would put the emotional and tie them together well we have programs that we're starting that address social emotional needs so i'm just thinking you know if we have three categories then we look for look for trends and progress in those programs whether it's and the data is going to be different um and maybe greg you can help us
with this but we're putting all of this into right and second step let's let's see how it's going and we may be getting reports of that but for me that's a goal to see how each of these the health and safety the social emotional the whole point was to increase academics so yeah i can see where how we can judge how do we get a report to judge that these things are working there are ways that those things are being measured and certainly there's an impact on academics when we get kids back in school you know they're definitely you know improving academics when they come in but some of it does have to do with absenteeism some of it has to do with suspension rates and all that is very measurable yeah i guess the
only thing i would add to that is um you know there's quantitative and qualitative measures of everything right and i just want to be clear that like when we talk about quantitative measures and you look at the dsip for instance they asked you for both so they said what would it look like if you do a good job of implementing tier 1 sel what would it look like it would look like kids using the castle vocabulary parents using that vocabulary together now he wouldn't say 9 out of 10 parents use it on a regular basis necessarily quantitatively it might you might look at those like perceptual surveys about increased feelings of belongingness so you know there's direct and indirect ways to measure all these things and i think we've had like a little bit of
discussion about the quantitative pieces already and you know qualitative data is important too when you're triangulating so what are we going to do that's what i'm thinking i'm trying i'm going over these and a lot of them that we've already we've already set so i'm i'm just wondering if it's worth you know next next meeting margaret would you mind writing up a little doodad of what you have in mind and sending that to me and we'll we'll try to we'll put this in and we'll all come back to that one topic next meeting and then we'll finalize this i'll take the notes and we'll we'll go through the rest of these and we'll try to hammer this down next meeting does that sound good to everybody okay that's what we'll do thank you um did
anybody else have anything they wanted to talk about during during board discussion no okay okay let's move on to the consent agenda like a motion to you first make a motion for the consent agenda and then accept the consent agenda right yep i need a motion to accept the consent agenda so move jeff thank you sir second second margaret okay any discussion yeah 10.6 10.6 it's not clear um india there's a table about a refund from from you know a tax refund but we can open the attachment all the the numbers are different so what exactly would we be approved for the 14 09 or the 6 000 that's in the attachment if there's any the reduction i i get that but the numbers are different in the table in the agenda are different than
