okay is we're going green i'd like to call our public session to order at 7 20. we had our executive session and i would ask our board clerk to call the role please anderson yes dr collins there dr jacob white here mr jordan here mr lamb here ms loud here mr shaughnesday here mr shearer mr spicer here and i would ask everyone to please rise for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance we have one resolution meaning board approval be resolved in accordance with section 3 of the employment agreement with the assistant superintendent for elementary education and the assistant superintendent for secondary education that the board of education hereby approves a 3.5 increase in the salary of the assistant superintendent for elementary education and the assistant superintendent for secondary education effective july 1st i need

a motion to any emotion to accept all those in favor say aye all those opposed the motion carries unanimously nine to zero we are beginning thank you everyone we are beginning our august third meeting with a special honor for our immediate past president mr shaughnessy i am going to read a resolution whereas james f shaunicy jr has served as the president of kingston city school district board of education from july through june 2022 and whereas the board of education and the kingston city school district wishes to express our appreciation and thank him for his excellent service now therefore being resolved the board of education and the city of kingston school district as an expression of their appreciation for the time he has spent as board of education president wishes to present mr shaughnessy with the

base as inscribed as follows james f shawnee jr board of education president 2019-2022 thank you for your dedication to the students of the kingston city school district from the kingston city school board of education and the kingston city school district and be a further resolve that the board of education presents mr shaughnessy with the gavel that he has used to preside over the board of education meetings i need a motion to accept this resolution please rise [Music] and as is customary we are continuing our meeting with it with an opening to public comment and i'll start with our public comment statement good evening everyone we are about to enter the portion of our meeting where we welcome public comments please remember that public comments are limited to three minutes each yes yes and although state

law does not require that we hold a public comment period we feel it crucial that we hear from our community about their concerns the board is here to listen because we take your concerns seriously we want to have time to process and research your issues your concerns and questions may be addressed at a future meeting of the board or you may be contacted by an appropriate staff member or administrator if you have a prepared written statement and do not have the opportunity to present it please leave a copy with the clerk of the board who will make sure all the trustees receive it please note that the state and federal privacy laws and collective bargaining agreements prevent us from discussing certain topics in this venue these guidelines are posted on the boardroom wall thank you

for your adherence to the rules and your interests in the continuous improvement of our district and i'll allow the perk of the board to call up our first public commenter uh father frank i'm sorry alana good evening thank you early in 2017 the common council voted to identify kingston as a sanctuary city and the county in the state on their part began to embrace a wider expression of hospitality toward those strangers who have come to live among us as neighbors and often as new friends as a sanctuary city various parts of the city's operation removed citizenship as an issue to be raised in the administration of the city's life for example the police were relieved of any need to raise this question in any policing action tenants regardless of immigration status are protected from being

evicted from their homes without a court order as the city took this initiative so too did the state and the county with the success of the green light campaign any resident of the state regardless of citizenship status can secure a valid driver's license on the county level the department of social services can provide services to any county resident again regardless of immigration status while inaudible devaluing citizenship status a humanitarian response is being made to take some precedence in certain strategic situations over the requirements of established codes over many years kingston has become home to a growing number of immigrants and their children some brought here and some born here since 2019 the number has expanded with the arrival of hundreds of asylum seekers with few exceptions the journey for all these is born of some

experience of a threat to life or the exigencies of survival as the immigrant population has grown in our city so too has it grown in our schools if a figure of 25 captures the size of the immigrant population of our city that can also give us a sense of the size of the population of the children of immigrants in our schools i believe that this sizable group of students should not be left without the possibility of having informed advocates on the school board the bylaws of the school board requires citizenship for board members and the application for candidacy on the board also requires this identification if immigrant parents of children are required by law to enroll their children in school and if children are required by law to attend school and it seems that the

children of immigrants deserve the possibility of representation and advocacy on the board i have no doubt that all the members of the board sitting here this evening love the children you serve by being members of this board i believe that love requires listening to the ones we love i ask on behalf of the kingston interfaith council and the ulster immigrant defense network that you clear the way for immigrant children to have a voice when the board meets and that you do this by removing the requirement of citizenship from your bylaws and on applications for election to board membership thank you for listening thank you for your time and attention thank you and that's all we are signed up right now for public comment is there anyone else who would like to make a public comment

okay then we welcome all comments and thank you for for the comments we did have tonight we're going to continue with our superintendent's report thank you mr spicer um so we are going to start the super transfer report off with a report from um our dr laura sagan and our esteemed former ktf president and high school english teacher to retire all right so tonight we just want to report about a grant that we were really fortunate to get it was called the empowering early education educators in racial justice this grant was brought to us because of our partners at nysit and the nea we were able to qualify for this because of our mentoring program which started back in 2000 way before the state mandated that we have a mentoring program our contract had that

in it that we could establish a mentoring program over the last 22 years we've mentored 97 percent of our new teachers knew our new hires because of that um i met bernice rivera from nysic and she knew that this grant would apply to us and that's how we got it it was a four-year grant and um i'll tell you a little bit about it so this is the focus of the e3 rj grant it was basically it basically came about because the district was cited for over um identification of certain subjects particularly our young black males in our middle school males so we when this came up we had to partner with the district and because of our small partnership with the district dr palomino supported it and john verge embraced it he became a

partner in this and we went up and started running we met with nystic we met with our staff and um you can see what we did we that was i'm sorry i got ahead of myself i was told to be fat i was i got a text that said please don't be long-winded anyway these were the goals what we did in year two is we started workshops we brought in our new teachers with our mentors and we started training them in awareness and um bias and just opening doors and conversations and giving people a chance to really think about who they were and who other people were and to have conversations that are somewhat difficult to have but we train between 135 and 155 of our teachers and our teachers they were either mentors where

they were new we hired people and we worked so here are our accomplishments so so with this grant i like to look at it that we did a lot of planting of seeds and with the planting of seeds some of them are intentional um and sometimes you have um seeds that you didn't intend to plant but got planted and are blooming and are taking hold so this is what's happening um here now in kingston we had some intentional goals and we've had some things that have rippled out and have only made us um better and stronger so um on the um district level we did have dr petersey who came in and trained the new teachers and uh their mentors which was an amazing process to be involved in and i was an administrator that

was invited to participate we did have dr peterson made such a great impression that he infiltrated our school district and what started happening is he made great friends with miss bonville and we had the training of the district administrators we had changing of questions on the teachers appr with focus on culturally responsive education we had ongoing curriculum updates that were happening especially in the english department but also starting in the social studies department and then we had i think one of the prizes for the district is the creation of two new positions which is the director of the rre and the director of the dei so those were unintended things that started to happen but it took hold and it it spread through okay so then what happened building work um within our videos we

did hs particularly like studies within my engagement we did several studies even during the pandemic when everything was crazy their minded met every week and we went beyond what we were supposed to do because it wouldn't feel good for us it's good for us to meet as adults but also because the work was so important and really opened up conversations that were hard to have with you so um then we had dr peterson and provided the building to both to jwd and miller and he started her prb groups there that continued chambers did two of the classic groups by two of the next programs three days are liaison through the grant and it has filtered through it has opened up conversations they're hard conversations to have and people don't we're not even aware that they

were biased or privileged or any of the things that um exist and we're dealing with it it has been difficult to work we've had ups and downs but it is moving forward and i'm really proud that we were able to do this grant that we can partner with that we can partner with the district that ktf was instrumental in doing this i think it has helped our teachers it just definitely helps our students going with dr peterson and having our teachers sit they turned it around immediately into their classrooms we could see it we got i've been some of you know in this district i was in this district for many years and um i with dr peterson we would do the evaluations and these women can attest to it in all the people that

came there were only two people who just didn't think that this was the most important that that to me said a lot so and people asked for additional help and work so i think we're off to a good start it will never be completed but um i want to introduce i want a special thanks to bernice and rita both from nicely bernice is the director of the educational learning trust who has offered us many many um training sessions and tida is the grand drive good evening president spicer and the entire board we're very excited to be here today with you and we would like to present a little something to you recognition and awareness oh sorry it's in recognition and awareness of your support and ongoing work and awareness of supporting our children for equal

let me read it in recognition and appreciation for your dedication to addressing systemic and racial equity in your district i do want to highlight a few things one of the critical pieces of this grant was labor management collaboration in order for the districts and their three districts that are part of this pilot program it was kingston schenectady city schools and amsterdam city school and one of the major components that in addition to the mentoring program was the labor management collaboration kingston and i'm not just saying this because i'm here at one of the best or the best labor management collaborations that we saw it was a great union and central administration effort and thank you um superintendent palladino for allowing us to do this work and john borg the former assistant superintendent was very critical

in the work that happened here and of course lori and we she had us laughing a lot we really enjoyed it but one thing i do want to also mention and i promise i will be short that kingston really engaged in some tough tough conversations and many of the conversations were also in cohesion i guess or in a room with schenectady and amsterdam where they're all at varying different places when it comes to talking about equity work and kingston was always very open to have these conversations and again that collaboration was critical and we saw so many things evolve because of those honest conversations so thank you thank you thank you nice it appreciates kingston's participation we love you lori thank you for all the work that you did because i all i did is

called laurie i'm like this is what we want to do she's like yes you know so we love those conversations you know so thank you so much honestly thank you so much and we appreciate you all have a good evening and that concludes our presentation i believe it was under 10 minutes a lot of work thank you very much questions or comments bravo and i'm on behalf of my fellow board members i just want to say how proud we are of the work of the ktf our teachers and administrators in the company of other school board members from other districts i have found your work uh your work because of your work we're usually at the forefront of implementing innovative solutions to educational challenges so thank you very much i didn't send laura the text

telling her to be back again you know outside of this grant which was very important and very important and you know we did we did take dr petersey on here and he will be training our administrators at our administrative retreat in august um it is the relationship with ktf and and the district and with an administration that makes these things possible these kind of collaborations the mentoring program is a great example lori and i have worked together on that over the last 10 years um and it's it's something that when we talk when we speak to you know new teachers or prospective teachers one of the things that we ask for is do we have a mentor program and we can always say that we can and really attest to the strength of that program

so um i appreciate that that partnership and it will continue even in this not gorillaz retirement we deactivated okay just the last thing on supervision for is a quick update on our summer programming uh in your board library you have the presentations from the summer school principals so those uh that's a little more expensive than landowners just going to give you kind of the quick rundown of them but we can you can look at those at your leisure um our principals did a great job putting together these presentations and it was really kind of fun to look at them so i encourage you to do so um our k through three summer school with principal emily clausey uh operated from the 11th to 29th uh breakfast and lunch were served we had an enrollment of

about 230 students we had many partners in this area in every one of our summer schools but here we had hudson valley reptiles uh khs mentors which was great having our mentors coming down and work with our k-3 students it was fully staffed with social workers school psychologists enl teachers bilingual family workers and the core curriculum the curriculum was our core areas using our lit camp for our literature which we used last year as well as sabas math which i think is new this year to both the k-3 and the middle school um but we also had art music pe and social emotional learning so we did put everything in there and as you can see the hours were a little longer than usual that's part of our extended program using our funding to make

sure that we have we're hitting those goals around kind of closing that gap in the learning loss as well as providing those social emotional supports for our students our students with disabilities uh summer school which goes on saturday night's july 6th doesn't end until the 17th of august this is a longer period of time for students with 12 month ieps they they have a little bit longer day as well 9 a.m to 2 p.m we have 140 students enrolled there 12 teachers 22 teaching assistants five therapists and one principal um the principal there is linda corey who's not one of our one of our employees but she's been doing this for us for a couple years oh she isn't sorry um she's been doing it for us for a couple years so that progress will

go a little longer and i do want to address there was some concerns brought to some of you about tomorrow and the temperature at meyer because we know meyer is one of our warmer buildings we do have portable air conditioners in every classroom that it has students in it for tomorrow so you know obviously it'll be the rest of the summer so we want to make sure that if everything got in place thus our students can continue getting what they need and what their iep's required them to have our 5th grade summer school our principal is tamara smith our dates were july 11th through the 29th hours of 7 45 to 1 pm again breakfast and lunch is served we had about 175 students attendance rate of of over 85 multiple partners cornell cooperative extension

peaceful guardians wild earth family woodstock as well as ulster works came in also fully staffed social workers school psychologists eml teachers bilingual family workers we have full core academics art and physical education as well as sel and other activities in the 5-8 really i went over to visit it's very active it was a very active program our summer nine program this year was a record year we had the highest number of students ever enrolled 70. so if you will you remember we started here at 22 um 24 i think 2224 so now we're at 70 students which was great breakfast and lunch were served um we have a great group of partners here as well youth example theater family of woodstock wild earth kingston police department go beyond greatness and our agricultural public high school

also worked with our students so we have some peer working peers working together again full core plus credit accrual in health as well as seoul and community partner in richmond lastly is our case of 10 through 12 which is more of a traditional summer school but does go a little longer 8 15 to 1 30. uh july 18th was our orientation and they will be up for july 19th to august 15th our recent exams are the 15th 16th and 17th uh and our summer graduation is august 29th at 5 30 at kingston high school so put that on your calendars we all know that that's one of our favorite events of the summer so how many students do we have hurt in on the trajectory to graduate by august we're down to seven okay it

started how many students are planning on graduating or going through ceremony in august and we're going to take our numbers yeah that was there's a week we think we think it's going to be about seven um that will probably move our numbers up a little bit as far as graduation rate but not you know too much okay was there any any further questions for our superintendent his report that concludes the superintendent's report next up we have our board of education reports first our facilities uh committee chairman please okay um the facilities committee met on july 20th at 3 30. minutes of the june 8 2022 meeting we read and approved jeff andrews from ddl reported that demolition that can be done at the khs pool has been completed as stated before there were unexpected conditions

discovered at the pool resulting from the earth beneath its deadline we do however have a design to move us forward to complete the work there was a meeting scheduled to be held with key engineering on july 21st the day after our meeting to discuss the impact to pricing mr clapper reported that a caulking proposal is also to be discussed at the july 21st meeting and he stressed that all efforts are being made to get it right any delays have been discussed with the athletic director rich silverstein and the pool is expected to be back online for the second semester of 2022-23 regarding the smart school's bond act phase one dr patelino has proven to be a soothsayer according to tom clapper an august meeting at state level looks promising paperwork is in the works the

document and technical design team is ready for the date automation package and ksq architectural design will be adding the safety drawings and required sed forms our i.t director and safety director uh mr tronzeksen and mr parker are also involved as to the energy performance contract approved by the board at the june 15th meeting mr clapper reports that contracts are signed and the district will be moving away from train and johnson controls to day automation and because of the smart schools updates to intrusion and other alarm systems being done by daily automation everything will work cohesively there was a meeting scheduled for july 23rd with during hamilton to discuss any updates on solar eligible eligibility guidelines mississippi and mr tomczyk have been involved in researching the phase ii plan for community connectivity for smart schools bonds

and additional indications are atmospheric initial indications are that while the kingston city school district can provide the hardware necessary there may be problems with community partners providing the manpower required to install it and they will continue to pursue options that's in phase two mr andrews from bbl reported that all materials are on site abatement should be completed by july 23rd painting is taking place acoustical tiles for the ceilings are ready to go and the contractors will be done before the first day of school mr clapper added that blindsided will be replaced using contingency funds and all new blind should be completed by the opening of school additionally mr clapper reported that the district maintenance crews have been very busy the district lost 45 trees in the recent storms and crews maintenance crews are doing tree

maintenance as central hudson is helping new fields are being developed as deets will be offline at the end of november track is going to chambers and pit and pole vault is also being developed the loading dr j watson bailey at the main kitchen is being repaired george washington is receiving copper pipe replacement a perennial project here the computer lab at miller is being converted to office space for student services and at khs an art room is receiving partitions for silk screening duct truck is being added to the photo room actually as part of the second century project and an ada restroom is being discussed for the first floor band area no doubt there are projects i'm neglecting to mention but i'll try to have a complete list for the september report our next meeting is

scheduled for august 17th but as there is a conflict with another just committee stay tuned for everybody's main schedule thank you very much thank you mr any questions for our facilities chair please um mr can you so dietz is going offline after the fall sports season right that's correct and november yeah so do we have a kind of lined up where all the sports are going to go and how and what the schedule is going to be um yes they've been working on that for months now and we're going to have many more away games than home games i mean this is still in the process mr silverstein and i went over just the other day after the facilities committee meeting he has a drawn-out plan of how we're going to restructure the chambers field

to facilitate fall sports as well as spring sports for for softball as was using every patch of grass in the kansas city school district yesterday but for things like for the bigger events like football we will be either a borrowing a field from one of our friendly neighbors for our home games or we'll have a full um away schedule for like homecoming for example yeah that's that's and what about graduation that's another thing that actually miss bondil and i were talking about this morning um and looking at what are our what's the potential because truthfully uh and i had a conversation with the mayor about it this afternoon we have um there isn't really a facility in kingston or even you know in our school district that would that could hold the numbering and you

were there graduation of that kind of so obviously we'd have to limit capacity and make some decisions where we wanted to go um whether it be you know in the old days when it rained we went to the field house or maybe we could talk to one of our local colleges or universities and use their fields or auditoriums or again maybe ask a friendly neighbor who can use their football field for our for our graduation okay all right i think that there's a lot of anxiety in the community about it because you know it'll last a year and probably some there's a lot of things that even but so you know the more that we can communicate that and people know that we're paying attention and that we will find space for games and that

you know we will honor some of the traditions that we have i think that people will feel like you know the homecoming parade i know that will be an issue for this year but it will be for next year so you know just to think ahead about those type of things um the graduation what about the uh gms which we i mean we put thousands in there for um in all countries previous years we've looked at ulster county council and i think they they still are a little smaller than we would like that we would be able to fit because you can't forget the graduates as well so yes we have you know there's pretty soon in the past we've looked at that but there's that's not we could really look at that you know

we could reach out to suny new paltz you know with that and maybe provide some transportation for families those kind of things but there's we've got a bunch of different things where or you know we could ask a friendly neighbor to the north if we could use their their field to uh to uh use our graduation so i mean those are kind of things we've been kicking around rondo valley has a good tool yeah on the valley of big field you know onto our high speed field sardis is a big deal i mean good there's possibilities okay that's great thank you any other questions for our facilities chair thank you monsieur excellent report uh next up we'll be hanging from our teaching and learning chair dr collins actually you'll be learning hearing from dr jacob

um this it was the last meeting that i facilitate as chair before hand off to dr collins um we met on june 14th and the focus of that meeting was to go through the school um the comprehensive education plans for our comprehensive support and improvement schools and those were two schools jfk and miller and the reason that we separated them from the tsi schools which we just heard from was because those plans needed to be submitted to the spd sooner and so we had to focus on those and work those together so they could get promoted to the state so um so just quickly um it was a it was a full-on dynamic meeting as always um jfk presented their improvement plan they focus on student engagement both academic and social and emotional and they

talked a lot about inclusivity and social and emotional learning from an academic and learning standpoint so that learning needs to be in the context of your culture and in the context of your world it needs to be relational in order for it to be meaningful so they talked about that quite a bit they talk about the and community connections and the kind of work that they're going to do to build that into their school for the coming year and they talk a lot about student agencies so getting students more engaged and more involved in their own learning and in building their own school environment and they had a few mechanisms for doing that um then we heard from miller and miller also talked about different ways to engage parents i think that's always a struggle

as kids get older and certainly in the middle schools and i think they're just going to keep trying different kinds of mechanisms both inside their school and also hosting community meetings outside the school um they talked about maybe providing transportation and child care and those kinds of things that might help engage and bring parents in they also have some ideas about doing thought exchanges for their parents and for their students just to get feedback on how things are going in the school um another tenant and something they're focusing on is creating a welcoming environment so restorative justice is going to be a key to that culturally responsive education and then for teachers a real focus on differentiation and professional development around differentiation and how to work with students who are at different levels and coming

from different places um so that was the bulk of our meeting on the 14th we then met again recently and that will be of i guess dr collins will report on that next meeting any questions so that's not tonight no oh okay i got i got through this one got this got delayed it's not tonight that's fine thank you dr nicole with any questions for teaching and learning well another excellent report thank you and next on our uh board committee reports will be a report from audit and financing from a law the audit and finance committee met on tuesday july 26 2022 the meeting was called to order at we introduced the committee members we approved the minutes from the july 8th meeting the committee received and accepted the treasures claims auditors and fund reports

with recommendations for acceptance by the board do i have to do something with that now if you need to make a motion so move to accept that report okay so i want to accept the report second second all those in favor of accepting your letters report please say aye aye all those opposed the motion passes unanimously okay auditors were here last week um the report may be ready for the audit and finance meeting on the 23rd of august old business subject of the internal audit is payroll the committee decided meetings will be held the fourth tuesday of the month at 9 00 am the meeting adjourned at 9 29 a.m the next meeting is tuesday august 23rd at 9 am thank you thank you thank you mrs lowe another great report any questions for audience

finance then thank you next on our agenda is the consent agenda are there any resolutions the board member would like told for a separate consideration none then can i have a motion to accept the consent agenda as it is second all those in favor say aye i actually just had some questions about the dsis so i don't think i need to pull that i can just ask them okay um i was looking through the deceptive um it was good to see this i this is the first time i had seen it so i was glad to see the report and it was pretty um full and comprehensive so just a few questions it says that um on that fundations this year we'll be rolled out k3 is that accurate is that right if you push

it on your body just just go ahead okay okay that's what i thought so it says k3 in here but that's okay because it's the larger because that was the larger yes yeah that's what i thought and i remember you saying because the materials um so i also had some questions about the bcba than the behavioral therapist can you i know we've talked about this at the board meeting but can you talk a little bit about how those um positions will be integrated into the schools and how those teachers and social workers know what their role the students will be sure so uh bcba is a certified behavioral analyst analyst sorry and i think my thing is on that so i don't have to scream anymore so we did initially in the dsip we put

in for a full-time bcba we were not able to find a full-time person so we did contract with someone this year that person oversaw her name was kat griffin we contracted with her and she oversaw the work of the registered behavior technicians which is the certification that our tas who applied and were selected have been going through they've now gone through the 40-hour coursework they're in the process of taking the assessment so um what this does if you think about the elementary we are also only rolling it out at k4 initially we had primary project tas many many years ago who were trained in just the paths curriculum which was a social emotional curriculum to help students with social interactions so this is taking that another step further now these teaching assistants will be certified

rbts they will also be able to look at behaviors and help to identify triggers for students in the classroom setting so the design is to really help them in their environment where primary project was more to pull them out and do a pseudo counseling session this is really designed to go in find out what how can we help this student be successful in their classroom environment where they're struggling in the moment they're struggling how can we identify those triggers put things in place for those students and then help that student be successful so it's it's a little bit of a reversal not that there won't be the counseling component because there absolutely is we all know i mean talking and teaching students how to then identify their own triggers all of the sensory parts that

we put in place to help our students regulate themselves and their behavior within the classroom and all of those tools will be put into place but in the classroom setting and what we heard from our teachers often was okay they go with you in a small group and they're they're okay but then they come back into the classroom and they're not able to transfer those skills that they were working on and so they're still exhibiting the same difficulties so this is this this approach is really designed to help them in the setting they're struggling in so are these at large pas in each of elementary schools who then go into classrooms as needed they were the former primary project tas most of them and they've either since retired um this year or and then the

rbts are going into those positions we also trained an additional rbt in every single building to have a backup in case someone's out also we wanted a we trained a ta primarily in most buildings that was in a self-contained class recognizing that some of our buildings that have greater self-contained populations may have some different needs that may look different so they needed they might need that designated person for those classrooms to help in a greater capacity so they are already existing they're already they're in their positions they will be utilized as needed the rbts are the former primary project tas which that was their position it was to to work on small groups social skills primarily with kindergarten and first grade but it did move into second and third now this will work with again

we always we try to do early intervention but this program is also will help our third and fourth graders as well okay so every pool has access to this every school has a trained rbt at least one most have two going into this school year um as far as passing the test they did it on their own time independently and they're working with the consultant so a few have taken and passed the test and are certified um not a hundred percent yet um but they they're doing it at their home mostly working with students with rops no it's working with any student who is struggling in the classroom for whatever reason whether so that that's the beauty of this we can we can work with any student who is having any kind of difficulty whether

it's it's short-term long-term um you know because it's about really looking at that student what's going on with the student is it math avoidance or are they do they need to stand more do they but it's a behaviorist model that they're employing so it's not like a social worker perspective it's a behaviorist model that they're abortion [Music] it'll be interesting to see how that how that works yeah um so just two more questions um i see that so most of the school the elementary schools and we heard about this from the staff presentations um are doing stanford harmony with the program and i'm wondering if you could talk a little bit about the intersection between stanford harmony work that's going to be starting on this beginning and the pbis work that has been going on

forever so pbrs if you think about it as an overarching framework it's positive behavior interventions and supports it's establishing common language within the building common expectations in all areas of the building for students staff have common language pbis sets the structure for for what behavior looks like the stanford harmony curriculum is a social emotional curriculum so that's where we get into let's talk about karen what does it mean to be a caring person is it you know what does that look like modeling those behaviors modeling those characteristics so pbis is the structure these are these are the things this is what's appropriate in the bathroom setting or in the hallway setting or in the cafeteria the staff of harmony curriculum dives deeper and then shows them also what what is what do these characteristics look

like for the students and teaches explicitly teaches those skills okay and for them for everybody yes k-4 and it is rolled out um obviously we had some struggles with december and january of this past year um you know but the curriculum is out and the teachers are are using it and we're prepared to support them it's a curriculum it's it's with the classroom teacher it's it's embedded into the classroom instruction they've had they've had multiple trainings and we do have jfk's a little bit ahead because melissa jamison was trained in stanford harmony so she actually brought it into the district worked with her teachers and then we did some turnkey training with her one of her interns um nicole molinaro who was also the high school summer school principal i believe and um she rolled

it out to our teachers at multiple grade level meetings and has adapted the curriculum and done a great job no no no i appreciate that i appreciate it um and so my final question is about the um curriculum audit that we've talked about here in the um diversity of the main version of curriculum and in the plan it references that as as part of um like the summer pursuing rating that will be integrated back i thought it was going to be and maybe i'm misunderstanding something correctly um part of a broader effort like as an analysis throughout the year that under you know we kind of uncovered and looked at all freaking audit and then we could kind of fill those holes through it from there if i could just jump on there it's going

to be both yeah so our summer curriculum academies have been doing that have actually been doing this kind of auditing especially around cultural responsiveness since we started with nyu five years ago so we slowly have been working on that in our in that curriculum and also mr letty kicked off our curriculum this summer was the kind of keynote of helping them move forward with that uh that process but the larger scope is one of those things that we're still working on again dr falcao just found out and and miss already working on getting the right expert in several that we thought we would grab we weren't able to um but we have a couple of new people that we that we uh reached out to and i went to a and actually facilities yeah i

mean it makes sense that would happen i mean the curriculum writing is kind of when that happens but i just wanted to understand whether it was going to be an effort for us like an external consultant coming in and looking throughout the year yeah i think it seems kind of approaching okay all right well thank you i appreciate it that's it those are all the questions i have i don't know yeah can i follow up with one question on the defense but um it is around the transition programs um there's just a mention of enhanced orientation efforts and knowing that we're approaching the school year i'm curious about what what's happening around this enhanced organization what does that definitely translate to operations so the kindergarten academies are happening the third week in august in all

of the schools same way they happened last year we prioritized the amount of time by school status so our csi schools or our had four days of full programming for our kindergarteners and then we scaled it down for for some of our other schools so but all of them that third week in august um the teachers will be in and working with their kindergartens and transitioning them to the school meeting their teachers getting to know their room and having a transition into the building physically so that was that's just for undergraduate that's just for kindergarten so our transition programs were um exactly what dr pacquiao reported on that's our summer programming is our transition programming and then in turn we also have orientations that we have scheduled um yeah i mean i think with you

know for me at secondary with the enhancement it was really adding to our summer programming which we did do um we had additional you know community partners that we added to the programming um and also my middle school principals went into the elementaries they had visitations um going into the building so that was you know we've done some of that before um and i think also the language in this plan we wrote it as a three-year plan so when we updated it so when enhanced was really we began enhancing those transition programs last year when we stopped doing just a fourth grade program we built it into the summer programming and the same with at every level i think it's also our summer nine has become a transition program which we started out very small

and with only a few hours and expanded that that's our eighth to ninth grade kind of transition so that was one of those programs that really um adds to that the and and one of the biggest things about the enhancement of you know thinking of summer school as a transition program i guess is thinking a little differently but we moved away from our old summer school model which was core only through boces regions exams drill and kill by two hours into a basically a full six hour five and a half hour school day that's called involve elections that about you know enrichment about community partners in those countries so um students get to be in the building for long periods and basically experience almost a full day at kingston high school as they're moving in

there uh breakfast lunch like things i already said i'm configuring myself but um so those are the enhancements that we made and we also added time to because we didn't always do fridays so we went monday through friday this year we ended the day and we entered three hours that's agenda item yeah poe vo8 special inspection and structural testing services it mentions a letter that the board accepts that i don't know where the letter proposal is do we have it was it in the wasn't in the library i don't recall seeing it previously in april 15th letter it's on page [Music] i didn't see it anywhere is that no library it may have been attached to that meeting but i remember when that occurred i mean we did report out that there were we needed

to have someone come in who was familiar with pools and do the testing and we did i mean it was approved by the board so i know we have the documents then i'm sorry that proposal so we haven't approved any spending nothing's been done yet no this is this work hasn't been done yet the work has not been done yet it's just this is the board approving me to sign that agreement to have them do the work so how's the board seen the letter that's what we're not sure if i'm not sure who's in the evil board okay then uh um if any if if there's no objection we can pull this uh we can pull this uh resolution and and then put it back on the now i'm sure we're going to approve it

i just don't know where it is i wouldn't like this well i think we don't like to see it or see it again before before we decide to approve it so if we pull this does that mean that we're going to have a later date for that pool to be ready because our next four meetings until the end of the month and the pool will be out of service for that extra time well i'm not in favor of pulling it i just wanted to know where the right well then without objection we'll leave okay uh james james doesn't want to pull it so is there any um [Music] you will look at it and sign it as appropriate yeah uh and they'll share it yeah i mean we're aware of it was reported out and

we know what the what the contents are we just don't know why it's not in our hands right now well and i'm sure if you have an objection to it you won't find agenda items then i'd like a motion to approve the consent agenda second all those in favor say aye all those opposed motion motion passes unanimously not into nothing we're moving on now to old business does any board member have an item for old business um [Laughter] does any trustee have any item for all business yes dr collins we just have a question um around the status of the sharing of information about sros in the contract we approved factory but said that we would have a report that annually from authors that included all sorts of data in addition to what changes have

been made how they've been carried out and how they were received by our community and our school community and i'm curious what the status of that is and when we might hear that i would say dr patelino and i have to get together and pick a time when the sro report is going to be done to the board i think that's what you're speaking about that there was that there was in their contract a promise that the sro would come and make a board report yearly or biannually it was it was actually that there would be a report it wasn't necessarily by the sro um and you know we'll work you know we'll get the data from our sros as well as our school buildings around those interactions and uh you know obviously part of

the is also their record keeping with their training and those kind of things so i was i'll get all those things together and come out the report report for september yeah there was mention of an annual review of performance as well as formal reports thank you very much i also just want to make a general um statement of appreciation about the outreach around the safety plan the reminders that have been going on but just related to any other trust do you have an item for old business i just wanted to clarify something because i think um after we had our election at our annual meetings um several people approached me and said you nominated mr spicer but didn't vote for him and i just wanted to clarify that that was does any trustee have an

item for new business yes dr jokovic i have two new businesses one actually is a little bit public that we have tonight i thought father alanya made a good point um i'm not sure if issues of citizenship are are decided by us as a city school district or if that's a matter of education law but i'm assuming that um we will research that and get back to him and it's state law it is state law so if it is state law then maybe there's a way that we can i'd like to say something because i know um we did want to get someone from the immigrant community involved and they did approach several people who have become naturalized citizens and um unfortunately many of them were not able because they had a lot of other

responsibilities but i think that um you know we could have both you can have an advocate advocate for the immigrant community who also is a citizen okay i mean i was actually going to bring it up under a new business at our policy committee meeting on friday okay because i made a note to call the attorneys and get any kind of angles on that so at least we can respond okay and we could do more outreach too i don't know as it's been done in recent years i do know that certainly and um maybe if there's not if that's state law and there's not much that we can do about that well i just to talk about that we do have an act of legislative action committee and maybe we would decide that that's something

we wanted to put on the legislative action committee agenda i think i share that committee um and at the same time we could also think about other mechanisms for engaging um that community but also the different communities within our district and with our new communications plan hopefully that will be part of the scope of that work icon i contacted father i think two years ago before the vote and asked him if he knew anyone that we could stand for election and he gave me one name and that person actually gave me two names and one person wasn't interested and the other person was interested at the beginning but then she decided that she and prior to your contacts that contacted several people as well so um it's not that we haven't done it i don't

think we've done it recently since you know well i also think we have to think about another way to engage advocates that perhaps don't have to sit on the board there's certainly committees that need there are certain things that we do that we could have community volunteers participate in so i think it's just a matter of us focusing on that i was so appreciative that he made that comment but i think it's so worthy well there's no reason why anyone can't be invited to serve on one of the board committees right but it should be if if it's intentional that because it represents a group that doesn't have a voice here that would be very important we certainly have you know we have ptas we have all kinds of things in schools where people are

encouraged to participate um so we i just think that um i guess because i had my policy vision just thinking that we need to be critical about when we're talking about policies when we have those opportunities to make sure we're aware of what we can do legally and what we came out through so that we can i also feel the same way that whether legally any uh non-citizen can serve or not serve on the school board this school board is particularly um well huge advocates for all of our children and all of our families and want to hear all voices and you can't serve people that you're not listening to it's just impossible and that's not what this board does the outreach is is just continuous and wide open so thank you father frankfurt are

you still here father well thank you father frank for what you said and and we're in strong support that every member of our community needs to be reached out to to find out how to best serve their children it's the only way what was there any more uh comments for uh we're new business right your business yeah i just have one more in your business sure we have been in conversations among ourselves and i know our community has too about the impact of including the regents exam scores and students final grades um and so i would like to request that we do a data analysis of the impact of that specifically i'd like us to look at the number of students who took regent's exams whose final grade was reduced because of the inclusion of

the region score in their final grade and by how much the number of students who score final grade was increased by inclusion of the region's score and by how much and then i'd like us to also do an analysis for the students who fell within the appeals process which was that 50 50 to 64 um which i think applies just this year and will apply next year too and you know who knows after that um what the impact of that was so how many students um benefited from that and how many were hurt i can't imagine many were hurt by it but how many benefited how much um and what does that mean for a placement within um the class the class i would like to make a motion at the superintendent it's made what

did i what happened to me yes i'll make a motion and i'll second it all those in favor say aye aye all those opposed the motion carries nine to nothing that the superintendent will undertake such a uh study for us thank you thank you and there's only one i'm sorry i'm just starting to be more specific as you said just before you voted but would there be a what is the board's request as far as timeline is concerned at what point would you like to have this um you know i think that there may be some urgency around the appeals dimension of it just because um that's the newest one and i know that it is impacting people kids who are flying here so colleges i mean it's a little bit awkward because we have

had a policy around including or we have had a practice of including region scores for years and so we decided to keep that for this year so i think that there's a little bit more urgency on the last one i think the other two um maybe in the fall we couldn't have a report october is that doable i mean what because because i'm imagining that this is going to be data that's going to be used by our teachers and our teaching and learning team to make decisions about how grading will happen but i guess maybe that's a question for you is that too late are teachers going to be too deep in what they're doing to be able to think about maybe changing an end of the year process at that stage like does it

need to happen sooner um yeah i think that's doable i think we also retrospectively if we if we look at if we see you know things that we want to discuss in the in the past exams that is we still have a capacity and the capability to make changes within that within that um within the class of not classified with 21.2 school year okay so so that can be that's that's a that's a programming you know situation we can make those changes okay those adjustments and craziness right i mean we're we're interested in the data but you will be making using it to make the decisions so thank you any other items from any trustee uh regarding new business yes i have a request i was on the steering committee for three years for the

khs second century project i have minutes for those three years i'd like to have a complete set of minutes of those meetings from the um i came here for you i'd like to have a complete set of the steering committee minutes oh they're on the website um i couldn't find them that's one of the things that needs to be cleaned up with the website any any other item for new business then i i have one item uh karen folded me a first draft in our self-evaluation meeting we talked about the public comment and how we wanted to possibly change it a bit karen forwarded me a first draft of our updates to the public comments statement i'll be sending it to everyone tomorrow if anyone wants to make any changes please uh please do so

and follow it back to karen we're looking to start the new statement at our september of one day so we have plenty of time so if anybody has any changes you'd like to make uh to it we're kind of doing it as a group effort uh anything else for new business no just in the meantime i i thought you did a great job of it tonight actually it was concise you spoke slowly and clearly yeah i thought it was so in the meantime we got to do new business more often we come to our second public comment session do we have anyone wishing to address the board does any board member have any board member announcements no okay uh we have we have no issues for our second executive session so can i entertain a

motion for a german show all those in favor of the german please say hi all right everyone have a wonderful night oh
