001Hello. Hello. June 8th, 2026 regular board of education meeting. Please join me for the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible with liberty and justice for >> So this evening we'll begin with recognition. >> Yes. So tonight we held a celebration for our retirees and I just want to publicly acknowledge them here um formally in the board meeting Katrina Urkel, Teresa Pharaoh, James Matther, Borie Updike, Trudy Quinnland, Barb Rawlings, Kathy Ryan, John Sheridan, Ham Springer, Kelly Null Morgan, and Christina Moravo. And what I do want to just point out, if you did not notice, this planter right here has all of the retirees for the 2526 school year. And this will be placed in front of

002one of our school buildings to to be there for forever. So, um, just just to make that note, it is really something that's important to the district to acknowledge all of you retirees who has made such an indelible mark on our district and we are grateful for that. And then just a congratulations as well for our tenure candidates. Brienne Issacs, Lauren Sprag, Amber Welch, Diane Edi, Gerard Jes, Danny Mains, and Jules Wagner. Congratulations. And then just a shout out, our all of our athletic teams um this spring have done so well. I do want to just point out that our Marcelus boys lacrosse team is still moving on. So they became regional champions this past Saturday. Uh they play in the state semifinals on Thursday night at Sunni Portland. And uh just a a big

003shout out to uh all of the players as well as the coaches. And then thank you to the Marcela School's art department. Hopefully as you walk through these hallways, you notice the incredible art that uh really dawned the the hallways. Our art teachers had an amazing display in this room today. Um, and it just shows the commitment that they have to our students to excel in the area of art. So, just a huge thank you to all of our art teachers and then our music department too. If you have had the pleasure of going to any of the numerous music events that have taken place the last few weeks, uh it is really extraordinary what our music teachers do with our students as young as fourth grade. Um just to be in the the auditoriums

004and hearing the music that is produced at such a high level. Um and again our music department is exceptional. So thank you And then now we are going to do a formal recognition of our seal of biiteracy candidates who are here with us tonight. I'm going to call Heather Arcisa who oversees the uh seal of my literacy along with principal Brian Ci. >> Hi, good evening. So for those of you in the room who aren't sure what the seal biiteracy is, um it is the high level of proficiency that our students need to improve in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in two languages that we offer here at Marcelus, excuse me, which are Spanish and French. We had 10 candidates this year, five in each category. Um, and we went out to

005Moy and Boseies on April 30th and they presented their presentations in front of our panel of judges and I'm happy to say that they all earned their seal of by literacy. >> So students who are in the seal of bi literacy are going to be uh dawning a special medallion that they get issued from the state. Uh unfortunately we do not have those yet from the state. So what we've got for you instead is also going to be your graduation cord as part of your French and Spanish uh national honor societies. So we're going to turn things over to our teachers and ano. >> Um I'm Jessica. empty trash at Marcales. And I'm just going to um call the students up to give them their cord, their medallion. Um just very briefly, um I did

006have the pleasure of teaching these students for four years, five days a week for four years. It's you get very close to your students and um I never got tired of these kids and they really I think this group really brought something a love of language as a place to open a world for them that was really special and I also I loved how every day they brought so much joy to so this is not alphabetical it's just as I see them so wrong breed medicine silus Hi everyone, I'm Maria. I teach the Spanish side of the um the program um for the sale by literacy. Um and I'd like to echo Jessica's sentence. Um, this class is possibly one of the most social, funloving groups. Um, just even I don't know, even like the

007last day of school last year, they proposed this just really kind like silly, funloving activity and it it kind of stuck with us. It was like our class activity and we pushed it on the wall and everything and it was I don't know, it was it was something special that we got to carry into this year. Um, a couple of the kids from this group I actually had for three years. Um I haven't had the off the gas have them for all four. Um but between three years or two years um you know it's been a really really great time. I'm going to miss them a lot. Um you know got to see a lot of progress through these past few years and it's been really amazing to see. Um, so yeah record pretty much

008here. So, one of the things that we love to do every year is have our students who earn the seal of biiteracy do a little portion of their presentation just to give you a sense of what the experience is like um presenting to for the seal of biiteracy. And the first person we have is Rowan who will come up um and do a presentate a portion of the presentation um from earlier in the month. Marcellis is so well known for having students that are well prepared beyond prepared for the seal of biodiversity. So when our students show up, the other students are amazed because our kids don't have note cards. They they know. Um

010something you may not realize is our students and and all the seal of bi literacy students are asked questions in the target language about their presentation. So yes, they can prepare for this, but they can't prepare for all of those questions that come at them. um and that they they have to know the language to be able to respond accordingly to the questions that the judges are asking. And so again, just a huge shout out uh to Maria Antel and Jesso for their hours of endless preparation to make sure that our students are above and beyond prepared uh for the seal of literacy. So thank you. And so I will say you are all welcome to stay for the rest of the meeting but you feel that you don't have to. So please if there's

011anyone that wants to exit at this point so much >> congratulations. So counselors are on hand tonight just to go over the counseling plan and I'm going to turn it over to our director of special ed overseas counsel. and still work late. >> Hi everybody. Um so I'm going to turn it over very quickly to Heather Ace who is our content specialist for our counseling department and um the department as you know includes our school counselors plus our social workers. Um one of the jobs that we have this year was to update the counseling plan. It's required by the state. So the counselors have worked together to um put update that and present it to you um as it's required. Okay, let's head in now that I can speak after running to my office. Yeah,

012sorry about that. Okay, so yes, I am Heather Artist. I'm one of his school counselors in the high school counseling office. I do want to recognize the rest of our department. The next slide there. So up here at the high school with me, I do have Pagia, Jen Baker, but facing to me. Uh Eric Gersio is at the middle school at 78. Laura Mcadi as our school counselor 46 and then our social workers we have Bethany Woods at the K3 at KCH Audrey to 48 middle school and then Lisa Hish 912 high school. So in 2019 um New York State put out a mandate to all the districts that uh we all had to have a K12 comprehensive counseling plan. We are also required to update that plan annually. However, our plan is pretty standard,

013so we don't have a lot of updates. Um, but the biggest update so far has been ASCA, which stands for the American School Counselor Association. They updated their standards. Um, they wanted to be more in line with um modern educational research. So, they now have six mindset standards and 29 behavioral standards. So we and then in term to stay up to date had to align our counseling plan with those new assets and rules. So that's the biggest update we've had so far since we developed our plan in 2019. And then lastly, we wanted to just mention our advisory council. Um that is also a requirement from the for the plan and we meet twice a year in the fall and spring. Some of you are on our advisory council. So it is a group of

014stakeholders that includes parents, students, staff, board members. Uh so in the fall we usually meet and we share any new initiatives that we may be putting in place for that year and then in the spring we give an update and then the council gives us some feedback and that's pretty much it. >> So we'll bring that plan forward to the board next meeting so that can uh formally approve it. Any questions? No, >> I would just like to say thank you so much for the work that you do. I know the connections that you make with kids and with families and um you know just day in and day out all the work that you do. So we are so grateful for the mental health support that you bring to our to our school. So

015thank you. >> Thank you. >> All right. At this time, we will move on to the um resident's comments. Public expression at the board of education meetings is encouraged, and a specific portion of the agenda shall provide for this privilege. In most instances, the board shall reserve judgment regarding questions and and concerns that are brought to the board's attention at a board meeting, as it is typically not prudent for the board to make instantaneous determinations. In addition, many issues that are brought to the board's attention do not require a formal determination by the board, but instead are most appropriately addressed by the superintendent of schools or persons designated by the superintendent without further board action in accordance with board policy 3220, community relations. Do we have any residents comments at this time? All right. Now,

016we will move on to the business portion of our meeting. Um item 5.1 approval of tenure of instructional staff. Resolved that the board of education approves the tenure appointments of the following um candidates. Brienne Issacs, Lauren Sprag, Julian Wagner, Amber Welch, Gerard Gerard Gson, and Daniel Mains. Can I have a motion? >> Amy, second, Sean. >> Second, Sean. Questions or comments before we vote? All those in favor? >> Opposed? Carried. This time we will um move on to item 5.2. Um resolve that the board of education approves the tenure appointments of the following. Diane Edy. Can I have a motion? >> Motion. Ben. >> Jen. >> Second. Erica. Questions or comments before we vote? All those in favor? I >> opposed, abstained. >> I >> carried. Very good. We will move on to item 5.3.

017Second and final reading of board policy. Resolve that the board of education approves the first reading of the following board policies. You can see those board policies listed before you. Um item 30 or policy number 3290, operation of motordriven vehicles on school property. Can I have a motion? Jen >> Jen second Amy >> second Amy questions or comments before we vote. >> So this is really just um adding to the already existing policy um banning um ebikes uh and e scooters. We have had numerous issues and close calls um so for the district's protection smart to put that in there as well. >> And I know a lot of area um districts are doing the same things. Yeah. Okay. All those in favor? >> Opposed? Carried. Okay. At this time, we will move on to

0185.4. Amendment to the Marcella Central School District 2025 2026 district calendar. Resolved that the board of education approves the amendment to the Marcella Central School District 2025 2026 district calendar. Can I have a motion? >> Motion. Sean. >> Sean. Second >> second. >> Okay. Questions or comments before we vote? So, let me just explain um we we have a few well I should say a couple emergency closure days still in um in reserve. And I purposely did not use one the Friday before Memorial uh day weekend primarily because last June, I don't know if you remember, we had three consecutive days in the mid low to mid 90s. So I I was a little concerned if we were in that predicament, we we potentially would be closing for high heat days. right now looking at

019the long-term forecast and the pool temperatures in the evening um what I would like to do and propose to the board is that the 24th will now be the last day of school for all students and so UPK6 um it will be a full day the 24th and for grades seven and eight it will be a half day. Um, in grades seven and eight, our teachers uh administer final exams, and this allows our seventh and eighth grade teachers a little buffer to score those exams. In addition, we had some field trips scheduled on the 24th. So, I I certainly didn't want students to miss out on that. So, I'm proposing that the 24th is the last day for all students. UPK6, it will be a full day. 78 it will be a half day. in

020which case the 25th will be the last day for our teaching staff. Um it was originally the 26. It really is a almost like a give back day for our teachers. The 25th will be the last day for teachers. >> All right. Any other questions or comments before we vote? All those in favor? >> Opposed? Carry. Okay. Now we'll move on to the personnel u portion of the meeting. Um items 6.1 approval personnel items resolve that the board of education approves the following personnel items. You can see them there before you. 6.1 through 6. Let me just look at this. 6.3. I'm sorry. 6.13. Yes. So, all of those are listed there before you. Can I have a motion? >> Motion. Sean. >> Okay. >> Questions or comments about any of those items before we

021vote? All those in favor? >> Opposed? >> Christie for one. I just want to introduce Emily. >> Welcome Emily. >> Emily is replacing Katrina Urkel who was here for the retirement celebration. So congratulations to Emily. >> And I do want to just point out to Katherine Branson Dennis is here with us tonight. she is actually gonna be taking over the district clerk role that Colleen currently has. So, congratulations. >> Yes. And welcome Emily. We are so happy that you are here and we hope that you're very happy here. >> Okay. So, now we will move on to um item 6.2, approval of personnel items. Resolve that the board of education approves the following personnel items. And you can see it there listed before you 6.2.1. Can I have a motion? Erica second. Second, Jen. Okay.

022Um, all those in favor? >> I. Uh, opposed. >> Abstain. And abstain. Okay. Carried. >> All right. And then, um, item 6.3, approval. Approval of personnel items. Um resolved that the board of education approves the following personnel items. Appointment of building and ground summer help. Um you can see that listed there before you. Can I have a motion? >> Amy second. >> Second. Jen. All right. Um all those in favor >> opposed. And I will abstain from that vote. Carried. Okay. All right. And then we will move on to consent agenda items. Approval of consent agenda items. Resolve that the board of education approves the following consent agenda items. You can see them listed there before you. Items 7.1 through 7.7. Can I have a motion? >> Motion. >> Erica. Okay. >> Second Amy. >>

023Second. Amy. questions or comments before we vote. >> So, I just want to point out the FCCLA National Conference Competition. You may remember in the springtime Liz Milikin and Diana Joselyn took a bunch of students to the New York competition and many of them qualified for state. So, they've been doing fundraisers and they're heading to Washington DC. So, we a fabulous opportunity for them. And then the other um the other field trips aren't till next year, but what it does is it helps um our staff members get a a leg up on booking hotels and transportation so that it's a little bit cheaper. So um that's why that's before you tonight, right? Any other questions or comments before we vote? All those in favor? >> Opposed? Carried. All right, that's it for the business portion

024of the meeting. We'll move on toformational items. >> So, just oneformational item. You'll remember a couple meetings ago and we had some of our um CTE staff come to talk about the community garden that they were um launching with some of our community members. So, um it is really going to be called the Marcela's collaborative garden and um there is a work party this Saturday um at the career exploration and egg complex from 10 to 12. So, just want to put that out there and a huge thank you um to all of our staff members who are are lifting up that great opportunity. Um, we have been in touch with the county looking for some funding and we're hopeful um that that comes through in which case we would honor that um at a at

025a future board meeting. >> Very good. >> And that's it forational items. Okay. And we have no executive sessions. So at this time we will adjourn our meetings. Okay. Resolved that the board of education meeting be adjourned. Can I have a motion? Chen, >> Chen, and Amy. All right. All those in favor?
