New York do hereby Proclaim School Board recognition week in the Empire State so we wanted to just take a minute and thank all of you for your service on our Maran Board of Education we appreciate you thank you all right so next up for our presentations we have our school counseling plans so we'll hear from Miss cello our elementary school counselor and from Mrs Livingston and Miss Johnson our Junior Senior High Counseling [Music] counselor all right so I'm going to talk about um our Elementary School counseling program some updates and then the goals for this year Dave I don't know if I all right so I will give some highlights from last year give some updates on last year's goals and then talk about my two goals for this year for the Elementary School counseling

program so here are some examples of some student work from either counseling groups or individual counseling we had the opportunity to get creative um and use arts and drawing sometimes outside if it was nice out and um there are some winter weather type ones as well so this is a big highlight for me just because I so enjoy spending time with our students and being able to um provide them with a variety of creative experiences so these are some highlights and then another highlight from last year was that we got to Pilot our second step night no um that happened in March and from March to the end of the year we had 1,133 of them um given out so it breaks down some of our second step common language with the goal of trying

to reinforce those skills and the language that they're learning and also um to give adults reminders of different times that they could say hey this is the second step skill that we could use so that's another big highlight and then my last highlight is just collaborating schoolwide so the first picture is from our graduation walk our kindergarteners get to eat um donuts and other goodies after the graduation walk and I tie in an activity to um college career and future Readiness with that and then for Red Ribbon Week last year and then this year for the the second year we did it prek 12 and this is a picture from last year of a community organization member who came in and provided some information to some high schoolers and then our fifth and sixth graders

so last year I had three goals and the first one was about Second Step implementation um it was our second year fully implementing second step and I wanted to assess our Fidelity of it and um the overall implementation so the survey that our staff took at the end of the year highlighted some of the strengths of our second step program and some areas of growth that I've woven into one of my goals for this year our or my second goal for the Elementary School counseling program last year was about a assessing our College and Career special area so one out of three trimesters we were able to hit the 75% Mark um one of the highlights within this school for me is at the end of the year I did some interviews I randomly picked

some of our kindergarten through fourth graders and talked to them about the restorative Circle piece of the College and Career special area and based on that Miss L and I have made some changes for this year with topics that they really want to talk about they really want to talk about animals and um how how things relate to home was something that popped up across multiple grade levels um so we are working to make sure that those are safe spaces for sharing within College and Career and taking their feedback and then update on my last goal was just about engaging families and letting them know about what's happening in the elementary school counseling programming so I'll continue to do that this year especially using our parent Square platform all right for this year I have

two goals that I'm going to focus on the first one is about our tiered Fidelity inventory which helps us measure our mtss systems so I'm hoping that our tier one score or the things that are done for all students will increase from 93% to 96% and then our tier 2 score which is that added layer for students who need a little bit extra in social emotional or behavioral support will increase from 69% to 80% and it's connected to our second building goal which is about school culture and it also supports our district priorities of the supported and safe tenants of the whole child so these are a couple of action steps that will go with this goal um just using a data driven approach during our meetings that we have seeking and utilizing that student

voice more especially for how they want to be acknowledged for being respectful responsible and engaged and how we can teach those expectations and utilizing some of our older students maybe to help us with that um and then again using data to track um interventions for kiddos that need that extra layer of support and seeing um the data before and after those interventions to see if they were effective and then my second goal um hops back to Second Step so we're going to take that implementation survey at the end of this year again at the end of last year we were at 93 and I'm hoping to get up to 98 again that goes with our second building goal of student culture and the culture in the elementary school in general it supports the healthy safe

and supported peasants and some of the action steps are in addition to the core Second Step curriculum we're going to add in The Bullying prevention unit for K through five fourth fifth and one section of first grade um piloted it last year they had really positive feedback about how it went and the importance of it so we going to use that with all K5 and it's K5 just because that's what the curriculum offers um one of the areas of growth is home links um so I provide the teachers with easy access to those and those are just worksheets that go along with the curriculum to send home to families the intent of those is more so to get the Second Step language out to families not to create like homework or an extra thing for

them to do but just so that families can link the language at home too and then similar to what I said with the Second Step night note just looking to increase the common language across the building and one of the ways I'm doing that is uh professional development each trimester for the staff that don't directly teach Second Step so I already did one for this first triester and I got an email a couple weeks ago from one of those participants that just talks about how um she utilized some of those skills already that we talked about in the PD and was able to uh give out a second step night note and help somebody through strong feelings that they were having that's great all right any questions or Reflections or feedback about the elementary goals

for this year great yeah this is really exciting work yeah awesome well thank you for your time I'll hand it on over to our Junior Senior High School [Music] friend okay um well for those of you that don't know me I am Mrs Livingston I am the school counselor at Maran Junior Senior High School for grades 10 through 12 and this is Mrs Johnson she's the school counselor for grades 7 through n um we're going to talk about the um 23 24 school year we'll give a few updates from last school year and talk about our goals for this year um so some highlights from this past school year that we wanted to make sure we shared um we had our school social worker she did four attendance groups to each semester um called night

Circle and she um they identified certain students that uh needed to kind of work on their attendance and she held two each each semester fall and spring um and she found that there was an 80% Improvement in attendance while the students were attending the group we trained second group of our second group of web transition leaders um they delivered the transition leaders are in um in 9th and 10th grade and they work with the seventh graders as they're incoming into uh into the Junior Senior High School and the web transition leaders delivered four lessons and hosted three social get together others we H our second year of red rivon week and our mental health awareness week we trained five new mentors for the New York State mentoring program which is 10th 11th and 12th graders

working with 7th e8th and nth graders um we deliver Teen Mental Health First Aid training to all of the 10th graders in the health class and we're continuing to do that this year getting into the health class um we reviewed four curriculums to deliver to ninth graders and we ended up selecting something called habitudes The Art of navigating Transitions and um we really liked this curriculum in particular and Miss Johnson will talk a little bit more about this U when we talk about our goals for next year um but we really like this because habitudes uses images um to promote um leadership skills that form habits and attitudes so habitudes um we actually this year have already done two lessons one for example just to give you an idea of what we're talking about with

with images um windshields and rearview mirrors was the first lesson and the idea with that is that um students should keep focus on their future um kind of glancing in the rearview mirror to see what's in their past but really focusing on the future and what's in front of them and then the second lesson was GPS and Compasses um and that was really about identifying your core values or your true north and assisting you to uh make decisions in the future um so like I said Miss Johnson we'll talk a little bit more about those about our goal for this year and then U the last thing we wanted to highlight um was defining and distinguishing our roles um in parent student and staff friendly language and this is something that was an important goal

for us this past year with having a social worker um uh added to our team we really wanted to make sure our roles were defined um and kind of distinguished and that everybody knew what each of us what our purpose was in the counseling office and so um we actually put this together that we're going to be sharing with parents and um and staff pretty soon um kind of giving them a list of you know topic areas and you know what the next step should be who should they contact if they have a concern or question in one of those areas um so we're really looking forward to sharing that out with um the community and then so our goals for this year we have three goals um the first goal is that by June

0202024 we will complete the implement ation of habitudes for the journey um the art of navigating transitions to all ninth graders and by September 2024 we will have a plan for continuation as 10th graders as as um Mrs Livingston said we've already been into the classroom twice um we will be again at the end of this month just in another week or so and um it's important to us that we get into the classroom we find that we're able to really establish um relationships with students that um are a little bit different than we would in our office it also helps to tie in some of these lessons when it's integrated within the classes curriculum rather than just an isolated you know one and done we don't ever talk about this again type of lesson

um so we started with ninth grade being a transition year that sometimes doesn't get a lot of focus just because you know we're a 7 through 12 building but it is a a major transition so these lessons really help students to um focus in on making those responsible decisions and to help them as they go through high school so our goal um as we continue all those lessons is also to see what we want to do for 10th grade and and moving on we don't want it to just be nth grade our second goal is that by June 2024 we will finalize the process for receiving referrals for counseling from parents staff and students so this was something that we worked on really hard over this summer um for two main reasons one being um

for efficiency we want to make sure that um as we see students that of course we want to support all of them but just for example um our Ashley mayard our school psychologist she saw over 30 students for individual counseling last year which is more than 10% of our um population we you know so we want to make sure that we're able to do that uh see students and see them um as well as as they they should be seen the other thing is um we want to also treat it just like we would in academic intervention we want to make sure we're pairing them with the right service whether that's individual or group counseling we want to make sure we have a goal and make sure we're making progress towards that goal and we

also have some way to see when they're no longer need to be in counseling rather than just they're just overseen um so uh we're working on we actually have the process already completed so it's more of just finalizing that process and making sure that it's going to work and then we'll roll it out to parents and staff so it includes all yeah and just to add that the um the idea is that over the course of the year as we implement it to parents and share it with parents there might be some things that we want to change and so the idea is that by June we'll really um you know having gone through it for a year have a better idea of what we want it to look like next year so then the

third goal by June 2024 we will complete two social academic instructional groups for atris students in seventh 8th or 9th grade this is really focusing and one of the building goals which is making sure that um students that might be at risk for not graduating we catch them early and we intervene early so um looking at students that might be more disconnected to school who have are chronically absent um and giving them an opportunity to strengthen um some of their skills and and reconnect to school any questions feedback or reflections s great EXC all right get a voice thank [Music] you okay we'll move on to Board of Education reports the first item on here is the student representative um as we've talked about as a school board trying to seek more student voice in

what we are doing um we felt we we had a conversation we put it up to the community saying hey we'd like to have a student member on our board um and they approved it so we've taken the steps and welcome Joey here tonight and look forward to once you get comfortable with us speaking up talking to us um I understand the first few meetings might be a little overwhelming but we welcome you and encourage you to speak up when you've got something to share with us so and we will try not to push you too hard to get answers because but uh we we appreciate you putting forth the effort and joining us here next item I have on here is I was able to be one of the seven New York state school

board members that with nisba had a meeting with Chuck Schumer um it was all of 30 minutes by Zoom it was quick in and out um but it it does several things one it put maryan Central School in his face um literally we were on zoom and we all put our school board where we're at so it just kind of helps him to remind nework was also there so we managed to get two schools in Wayne County that were able to speak directly to him um we talked about things like Title One funding um the school lunch funding and how important how nice it is that we got it for this year at full funding but how important it is especially to rural schools and schools that don't have as many resources that that funding

continues past this year um so for those that don't know the funding is only through the end of the school year at full um so we'll see where that goes we talked about the salt deduction limits on itemizing taxes on the federal taxes and how for States like New York that Sal if you don't know is state state and local tax so part of one of the previous budgets the federal government limited how much you could write off on your federal taxes that you pay to the state and local governments um I'd prefer to keep my tax money local and not send it to the federal government so it's one of those things that I would like to see that reduction eliminated um and it as a whole that's one of the things that NIS

is pushing for at the federal level we also talk about funding school buses Andor the fact that they there's all this push to go to an electric bus and rural areas like Maran can't even get the electricity to do that so if the government wants us to go that direction they need to come up with better funding mechanisms to allow us to do that um he seem very receptive it of it um we'll see what happens cuz currently the funding stops at the property line basically it stops at the meter there's nothing to get the electric to our building and in Marian's case there's nothing to get the electric to the town that needs that needs upgrades so even if we did buy all our electric buses we can't run them all so or we

got to shut down houses which isn't going to go over well so those were some of the things we talked about with him um again it was 30 minutes but it allowed us to speak up and allowed us to have that conversation and as the public has asked on a regular basis that we we take the effort to meet with our politicians I wanted to share that we did um so that was that piece of it um well thank you for talking to him and for mentioning the buses I was not I actually was the one that spoke on that topic because I was not going to let that one go to someone so I do electrical engineering I just Design Systems I'm designing systems to put these Chargers in buildings so I wasn't going

to let someone who didn't understand the technical side of it speak about it as well so awesome um our her so service again I can't promise anything but he at least he at least acknowledged the concern and he responded back he didn't just sit there and several items he has his he has his typic difficult response to this one he didn't it wasn't a Cann response which I felt was better so um next item on here is the nisba convention um Amber and I both attended the conference the convention out in Buffalo um a lot of interesting things um one of the things I like most about is talking to people and learning what's going on in other districts it's amazing how many districts have the same challenges as we do um so it it

allows us to compare notes it also allows us to not feel like we're the only one with the problems so that's that was very helpful did you get yes um so there there's a few things that will come up as time goes on on there um of the ones I sat through I did sit through some training on board conflict of interest just I was sharing this S I was looking um wow and the just some of the that it's not always just about what's actual conflict of interest some of it's perceived conflict of interest and sometimes in the perceived conflict of interest it actually causes more harm to the district than the actual conflict of interests um and just trying to make sure that that our our code of ethics is up to dat

um we all know what it is one of the things that they made a point of saying is just because you as a board member or an administrative or as a staff member as a district just because you don't know the code of ethics does it mean you're not liable for violating the code of ethics um so that's just that's a good reminder to us to actually make sure we review it and we make sure we're following it and we're being cautious about how things play out um I did go to one on electrical vehicle charging um just because I want me to um I went uh one for Equity Equity inclusion and diversity um kind of just trying to figure out what other districts are doing um this was from the East suluk bosies

and what their policy is and how they Implement things as far as hiring I found it interesting that they very it was very built around making sure that we're advertising making sure we're encouraging everyone to apply for positions and making sure that we're looking at that diversity piece um they even go as far in their hiring statements and saying that they understand that some like some minorities and women will tend to undervalue themselves more and that they still encourage you to apply for the position um and then the application process it's there's no it's not about picking someone that meets a checkbox it's still looking for the best candidate but trying to encourage everyone possible to apply so they can actually find the best candidate um so I thought that was kind of an interesting

like there's a lot of stuff out there on diversity equity and inclusion some of it's good some of it might not be as good it all depends on how it's implemented um and making sure it's implemented well we become a stronger body by having the diversity and including people of different thought processes versus being single-minded but it's got to be including everyone not just certain groups so but those were the big takeaways I have so I don't know if Amber you had anything to talk about but um I went to um they had a few they had one about um connect the community Through social media which I'll be using and in the presentation that I'll be submitting hopefully this weekend um about our Instagram potential Instagram account and then also um on Mark marting

and branding um and like who speaks for your brand so your you know your teachers your staff your admin they're going to be the ones who are out in the community making a name for yourself and you know having that congruency from aspect to aspect um you know what message are we sending what fonts are we using what you know perceptions are we giving out um and I think that I um touch on more as well in the presentation next time and um I went to a presentation about board docks and that was really great because we got to hear a lot of folks um ask really good questions um and there's actually going to be a convergence to um a new program in the in maybe next year she said uh where the same

compan is kind of just rebranding and adding more useful tools to it so you've got some things to look forward to here which is really great okay we also have the legislative committee survey for four counties um I have to be honest I haven't really looked at the four counties stuff too closely yet um but we was there a due date for yeah I think it's these eight or [Applause] okay let's the end of this week okay did anyone have any things that they wanted to include um like one of the questions is what do you think of the top three most important ways the state legislators could help our district um I don't do you have anything you want us to include you're shaking your head yes uh I think that now that the

federal stimulus m is ending um the current revenue for many school districts is limited to the tax levy and state aid so um that is not keeping Pace with new expenditures such as contract expenses inflation utilities healthare was expected to go up another 10 to 12% this year so uh if the revenue is not keeping Pace with the expenditures that many school districts are going to have a funding issue okay anyone else have anything what always the buses so that is one of the nisba pass resolutions is to change that busing and it should be make it more realistic if at all wouldn't hurt to put it on there okay we discuss it quite often that's why y okay anything else the other big one that comes up every time at superintendent meetings is just

around Staffing so the ability to like recruit and retain highly qualified staff opening up other Pathways to certification um so that we can recruit a talented and qualified part for us to support our St I also ask I know the board members these in front of them um looking back at the 2023 propositions are the top three that you think they should continue advocating for um one of them was equity and predictability and funding which kind of goes to the item you brought up um mental health and academics social emotional learning for all students and staff Staffing acable internet those are the top ones that they had I would say equity and predictability funding y Staffing if we had to pick a third of last year's I would say the mental health use over the

Internet it's a big thing so I would agree with that and spelling is also important I wrote metal help soal health is also very important Jason just quit um anything you don't think they should advocate for on that list I don't really think there's okay okay I will okay any other board members have any thing to report on no I did attend the junior no not the junior high the Senior High um choir room band concert that's always enjoyable and it's always impressive how early in the year we're able to hold a concert many schools don't do anything until December and the fact that were're able to do a concert in October I find kind of impressive because they still they sound really good that early in the here so um I did have um

how I was at the mes Halloween celebration and that was always a good time the um upk to to uh parade in their Halloween costumes always darling um we have got such great kids I just I can't get over how awesome our kids are and our staff has such amazing work um and I also had the opportunity on Thursday I'll be speaking and presenting at the um veteran stay ceremony at as well yeah okay anyone else have anything not sure where do so you don't have the answers right now um but do you feel that if you were to respond or bring anything you want to do it there or would you like us to put a do if you to give us an update if you were to give us an update does that

make sense to do it there um type with else not sure yet okay I'm not sure if it would fit better somewhere else or that's that's fair FR us feedback as we go this is new for all of us so okay we will move on to superintend all right so the first thing I have on here is the eastaff grocery run that happened this weekend um Jenny Bay who is our uh prek 12 librarian has organized this for us um I think for the past 3 years um and she's organized a Maran team to benefit the Maran food pantry so we had about 25 um team members on our Maran food pantry team and Jenny emailed me today that overall they raised $6,250 so um a portion of that will get donated then to the

mar and food pantry so that was kind of a fun activity to um I think bring staff together and also benefit something in the community second on here I have mtss and Community Schools and I originally put that on here um because this past week um Mrs Steiner Mrs Levy and myself attended a conference that um we thought was going to be how you map your community schools like what you do with your community schools programming um onto like your your MTS systems so like what are things um that have to do with Community Schools that you do for all students and families um what are things that you do for like targeted groups of families um but we got to the conference and it was not at all what we expected so um I

guess I would say from here that like that is the work that we feel is important in the next step to do with our npss and Community Schools um Team so we'll move forward with that and you know later this year you'll get an update on Community Schools and hopefully we'll work in some mpss information as well next up is probably the most exciting part of my piece of the agenda and that's to introduce our newest therapy dog who is Raj um he is owned by Lisa verir he is here tonight to meet all of you um so he has completed all of the required training um for a therapy dog so he will be um working in a junior senior height on Fridays to start and he's here tonight to meet you and I

thought Lisa I'd give you a chance is there anything you want to share about Raj or his training with everyone um Raj is absolutely loving puppy who's n and a half and he likes to land his back and get his belly rubbed and basically be worshiped um he passed his test with colors and um some of the hopes for him this year at school um would be at the counseling office wants to borrow him for counseling um to speak about him for um to um use him in like social emotional lessons and healthed and um just to bring smiles to people's faces there is you know some scientific evidence of um and studies done on how ping a pet or an animal can bring down your cortisol levels which is your stress hormone as well

as your blood pressure so we have a stud representative now when do we get a dog represent nominate we don't need to get we'll just get the little thing right here sit right between us it's of terrier mix um about 26 PBS is let toate down all his medical records he has A9 good citizen certification lots of good smells here [Music] tonight oh my go this R thank you so much and we're excited to have Raj be part of our school Community thank you than for bringing him R thank you also and then the last last um piece of my report section is just that um we need to certify our APR evaluators this is um in addition to what we did last time so Anor haras our new assistant principal um has completed her

Danielson training to be able to evaluate teachers okay have a motion to to certify move it you get a second a second all in favor CL motion passes sorry reading my screen looks a little different so I'm kind of used to where the language is so need to make a motion for the therapy dot as well oh I'll motion that okay we got our first our first and second all in favor I opposed motion passes run the gauntlet shake your sh did that shake my hand is there a way that you can note that on the agenda it is not it's okay so your paper agenda it's not going to be noted yeah you got to click on the it I skipped I skipped clicking on the therapy dog one which is why I missed

that one yeah it's gonna take a little getting you to did you have anything else still out no I'm Al thank you we'll move on to the school business administrator reports so the first item I have is the 2425 budget about the calendar draft um the dates follow pretty much the same as last year obviously off a two days based on the calendar um I do have the budget uh committee meetings to start at 5: or 5:30 depending on um the date there is one board meeting date that has a building visit uh which is why I use 5 or 5:30 depending on what happens that day of the meeting uh also I'm I will send out um invites to the community as well as the school for anybody that wants to be on them

budget committee this year that it's there to look at and then there any questions or comments and um next time we'll approve anyone have any comments on it now I think it looks very similar to what we've done in the past so yeah change the dates change the dates change my title all right the next item I have uh is tax collection report that time of year September and October over um so we have the uncollected taxes that needs to be approved and turned over to the county for collection um this year actually the collection was a little bit higher than normal typically we have about a 94% collection rate in the 6% Jal County this year we had a little over 95% um so we'll have roughly 5% turn over to the count any

questions on that okay not can I get a motion to approve it it can I get a second second all in favor oppos that motion passes and then the last item I have uh is financial report um so if you compare last month's financial report to this month's financial report um when you're looking at a difference between the expenditures and the revenues um there's a net gain of about $60,000 um and that is primarily due to um $40,000 in interest on our interest earnings and we had a $34,000 bus sale on the financial reports do we need to see four years at a time I can't it's hard to I'm just wondering it would be easier if it was years sure does anyone care I just sorry I don't care old now yeah they're so

little any other comments or questions regarding the financial reir I do not can we go get a motion to approve them a second all in favor I oppos that motion passes on to administrative reports so in terms of things that have been going on in um my office one of the things that is happening really for the high school with with a few elementary teachers thrown in as we have been running teacher Clarity workshops so every single Department um is having a personalized teacher Clarity uh Workshop it's about nine weeks of training every Tuesday and then all of the new teachers at the elementary school so then by mid January everyone in the district will have received training on teacher Clarity and then we're going to start part two with the elementary school second semester

um the 27th yes the 27th was Wayne fingerlakes Uh personalized learning conference and we had four teacher for Mari and present so that was exciting um Julie rer and Jenna at presented on teacher Clarity on learning intentions and success criteria and then from the high school Mike hurlin and Jamie Fitz Simons presented on um providing voice and choice on Civic learning at the middle level in terms of they presented really the Capstone that they're creating for the deal of Civic Readiness so that kids coming out of 8th grade will have one point towards their seal of Civic Readiness and so they have created an interdisciplinary project which they presented on and shared to the region so it's pretty awesome um and um speaking of the sale of Civic Readiness we're excited we have about 14

seniors that have signed up to work towards earning the seale of Civic reading this this year so they've all been assigned their advisors and are beginning to work towards that um seal and the conference day in October because I haven't seen since then um is we did or I did a session on the impact of AI on teaching and learning for the high school staff so and we'll do a similar shorter session but a similar session for the elementary teachers and AI is something that is going to be on our minds and Forefront so it's just on multiple levels um you know it's very much a part of education and things turn over very fast so AI has only been with us for one year now officially a year and it has completely changed how

things work and happen so those are the big things that are out of the instruction office we have finished all of our 504 meeetings 504 plans give accommodations to general education students and so what's new is that now all of our 504 plans are in Frontline that's a computer system that um makes our 54 plans more secure it also allows us to draft them and revise them and distribute with them and it's in the same system that manages our IEPs and so it's a system that we were already paying for so we don't pay anything extra and now we have them there um and to better better manage them and also along with that all of our IEPs and P for plans are now linked to school tool which is our you know School management

system and so every teacher who is assigned to a student that has a p for or an IEP um can just click on that the icon in school tool and see what the students information is so it's much more available teachers can see it much more readily and it's just um makes it much more available to teachers to have that information um and one more thing that has made us a little bit more up Tod date is that we also have a Shar digital storage spas that we're using for staff members in the CSC office and so um instead of always having to call one of the secretaries in the C office and have her get it out of the paper folder we now have something called document Repository that we're using through um Frontline

I um and it just allows the providers in the elementary school to be able to get it immediately when they want it instead of having to call a secretary to get it and so we've been updating things a little bit electronically and digitally too um and then for bkcs which I continue to do we're at about 700 actually right now um and some special ones that came through in the last month uh Mr Dean got one from The Varsity soccer parents they said to him thank you so much for going the extra mile to help make boys and girls senior soccer night such a memorable one for students and their parents the music and the great announcing made the night extra special for everyone we appreciate your hard work in helping to honor our athletes

hard work and then Mrs Steiner got a special one sometimes people don't know how to fill up the form correctly even though there's like lots of prompts to help them and so this one really came from someone anonymously they filled out from Mrs Steiner to Mrs Steiner usually I can figure it out but I couldn't figure out this one so it's an anonymous student who wrote to her uh this is probably from uh in seventh grade but they wrote uh to Mrs CER she was always there for me when I was in the elementary school and now she is practically part of my family so thank you so she got a nice to and probably from a seventh grader that's it um so it's been a really busy two weeks but it's been fabulous I

took on some tardy policy stuff at the high school so we're giving kids a little bit of leniency and giving them two warnings per month so they won't automatically have a lunch detention just to cover those kids who you know maybe something happened in the morning or whatever just to show them that we care and really what we want is for them to be in the building and in class um so we don't want to punish them if they're late a couple times uh we do have the Veterans Day celebration coming up on Thursday and it's being led by our student council the PTO Halloween party was fantastic and was a lot of fun but I think the hardest thing I've done in these two weeks is be a judge for the costume contest so

hard so hard but it's been really good yes and it's been really awesome to have Anna this the last two weeks she's jumped right in and already make made a difference like um we couldn't be more excited to have her I can't be more like it's wonderful having her um so just to fill you in a little bit on what's been happening at Mees on our conference day um going back all the way to the beginning of October um we our teachers had a guest speaker a couple of guest speakers come in and talk about uh the impact of mental illness and how some of those symptoms of mental illness in students can be misperceived and so what they might see in their classrooms and how that might impact the students that they have um

as well as some different strategies um there one of the presenters was a social worker from Newark School District who shared a little bit about what they're doing in nework so as you said Rob like it's kind of nice to hear what's happening in other districts and how they're handling some of the same challenges that we face um I probably you might remember from the building plan presentations we've been working on looking at like what data we're collecting at the elementary school and for what purposes so we did a lot of data collection and benchmarking in late September and early October and then had data meetings to identify student groupings for like wind times and interventions um so those can be a lot of work and I have to give a lot of credit to

Mrs Walker who helped facilitate all of that um we also had a PTO movie night in the auditorium which was very well attended our mini camps are up and running Dr Lloyd has been running a fall science mini camp there was an outdoor adventure mini camp and lots more to come so that's always fun and lots of excitement around our mini camps uh we had a hay ride to celebrate every one of our students um earning at least one night note in the district which is exciting and Matt's also our Community School's coordinator um has a connection to mats and she was able to solicit a donation from them so they enjoyed um a healthy treat of like applesauce and apple juice after their hay ride and then of course the K2 Halloween parade was

adorable and such a nice thing to see like our students have so much fun and everybody enjoys watching them parade throughout the building so it's a lot of fun and excitement throughout the month of October um and we're looking forward to continuing all that fun and lots of hard work as well so Mr Mr wise we we'll just stare at each other uh things here are going very well as excited as Mrs ER is to have Mrs Sarat MZ here I am more excited um she's been a great help and we're thrilled to have her as Rob mentioned the senior high band inquire concert was a great hit this fall the kids do a fantastic job and like you always impressed it how well prepared they are so early in the school year our fall

Athletics seasons have uh officially all come to an end at this point but um really success uccessful finish and successful during their duration lots of wins lots of individual victories uh lots of improvements um great senior nights here for our our home senior teams home senior athletes and um some nice sectional runs as well so without getting into specifics in general very successful fall Athletics season we're excited about our new message board up front um and Wendy grassel in the main office and our Tech Team have been working hard to figure out the software and how to make the best use of that sign so that's exciting um we recently had an flcc instant admissions event here which to my knowledge is the first time that we've held that here um but an flcc rep

came out and a bunch of our seniors were able to be admitted right on the spot to FCC so it's exciting to have them have a plan for next year already and um we are working on building a very small alternative education program here we're calling it ignite the night and um we're targeting some students kind of in the in the same essence of our building goal about uh reducing dropout rate over the next few years uh we're targeting some students in the 8 n 10 area that U may be at risk of Dropout for several different reasons and so we're looking at how we can adjust their Academic Program using our own teachers here in the building but giving them a little bit of a different school day to uh hopefully help them not

be so at risk for Dropout and so far so good and really that's a credit to the great people we have for working with them in that program um the last two months I've been working on a project Dr Lloyd so lovingly gave me of the upk after two months I finally have all of the students and staff entered into it so hopefully we can start the process of getting everyone trained so we can get reimburse from the county for our integrated upk program so tech department other than our our Tri typical you know maintaining the systems um been working with with uh editech at Bose to do a little bit of a kind of a wireless audit um after coming through the capital project where we spent a lot of time pulling out ceilings

and putting them back in um we found there's a couple areas that just seem where Wi-Fi seems to be a little different than it was in the past so we're kind of going through and doing not only an audit of the uh the access points that are present um with where they should be and just making sure that everything was put back the way that it it should be after now that all the the construction has kind of come to the end so we started working um in the elementary school primar in the new office spaces we we just found it's just not you Wi-Fi's not really been the way we would like to see it um and so trying just to make sure what's going on there so we've got couple Texs that have

been out a few times uh again doing some mapping and just kind of go from there but that's kind of been our big our big new project going on thank you all it's always exciting to hear about what um so I'm recommending shelene Hayes um for our director of Transportation position um and you know when I do these recommendations I typically like think about what I've chatted with people in their interviews and like their um materials that they've submitted with their application but I feel like today um what I have like just came to me in my inbox and I think it like speaks to why shelene is the best candidate for this position and I feel great about recommending her um I got included on a bkc today that was sent to shelene um

by Mrs Maine and she wrote shelene was as always incred helpful in arranging transportation for us to Junior High area all state several of my colleagues were not so lucky and were envious that my transportation department actually communicated with me and then actually helped them more than their own transportation departments did we are very lucky to have shelene um so I'd just say that this event was actually in bavia and we were having trouble getting our students there so cord shelene coordinated with other districts so that we could share you know one District bust out and we bust back so I just felt like this bkc showing up as a good Testament to the work that she does um and in addition today um I got an email about a specific student who has really

had some trouble um writing to an outside placement and shelene took it upon herself to um create a job for this student to do on the bus so that they can be productive and feel like they're part of the bus Community they have a um and I feel like it's things like that that really uh speak to why schen is important for us um in our Maran community and I think we will be a great dra of Transportation thank you else comments okay if not can I get a motion to approve the consent agenda items can I get a second second all in favor I motion passes anyone sign up for General Community comments yes um Heidi Bella Fontaine signed up to talk about girls basketball can she go first she like to go before

who else Kayla oh she just wants to go first [Music] sure um I'm here tonight because I'd like to speak about the lack of girls basketball team this year again as a player I can't help but be displayed that we are once again combining with Williamson I realize that we are a small school but yet we can't have enough players to build a modified and bar city girls soccer team all because the Freshman to seniors get to play barcity soccer I as a player would like to know how what attempts our coach has done to promote girls basketball team here at Mar has the coach been trying to build a program in the offseason in my opinion she has not when the boys basketball team has low M members they still make a mod team

and varsity team I want to know why as a player why we can't do that for the girls team we're supposed to be build to build a Maring team if we keep combining how are we supposed to when we combine with Williamson um Williamson girls were never accepting any of the marican girls on their team I felt like lean to these girls making comments that should not have been made that made me as a player feel uncomfortable and not want to be there our someone is also one of the coaches over there since she doesn't try to promote the girls team here at Marion she also does not promote the girls Mar and girls playing nor does she stand up for the girls because as a player I had broken my arm and felt that

the Williams coach was punishing for me and the other coach probably saw that I as a player was struggling but did not help out and I still attended every practice in every game with a broken arm waiting the Williams and girls to get the most playing time cuz nobody would stand up for us all I got from playing with that school was being told that I don't get along with the girls but yet I play a volleyball and Lacrosse and just drove 5 hours to play basketball in Pennsylvania which are which each of those Sports I play with a bunch of random girls so I would like to know why I was told that I don't get along with any of those girls because I can in other sports and other teams thank you thank

you so I'm also here for the girls basketball um kind of disappointed that we're not having a varsity team and again we have made teams for modified baseball they had nine boys last year nine that's enough to play on the field why are we not making a girls varsity team I have talked to other parents and counted we have nine girls we can make a varsity team I've also heard rumor that if we don't combine with Williamson we could have possibly like six to seven more girls sign up because they don't want to play in Williamson unfortunately I don't think I think the players should have been talked to after last year and asked how their experience went as a parent it was horrible I took home a crying player almost every night she left

the school one day we played here at Maran her name was announced as a starter she was told that's not right go sit down never an apology from either coaches that's wrong then to go and play only 27 seconds is wrong um I also pray she's going to be retaliated for doing this and also retaliated because I spoke up at the end of last season and going to be pushed down to JB which I don't think's right she's played two years Varsity she started as a varsity freshman she plays a she's played at P Community Center since seven second grade and played up there's no reason and we're making all these other teams that we don't have an effort made to make a girls basketball team you know we she's trying to get seen by

other coaches for basketball for college and going over there our girls were ignored they weren't given a fair chance I was told that this was for the benefit of our girls none of that benefited our girls nothing about it benefited our girls our girls St at the bench most of the time we had one player that got moved down to JB last year was told she'd get more playing time on JB she did not I pride at our school that everybody had an opportunity to play this girl did not get an opportunity to play now she's going to be a senior and they're saying we're going to combine with Williamson unfortunately she's not going to get the opportunity to play either there I always pride in Maran and being a school that allowed every kid

to play combining with another school like that that one did not need us they had I think 11 girls already sitting on the varsity bench before adding our four girls so adding our four girls they had enough for three varsity teams combining needs to be looked at that both teams need us not combining because and if they don't need us and they have extra players then let's combine and make an extra team here at Marian and we'll take the girls that can't play over there you know I always prided in Marian that we had the opportunity to do things and I'm sick of hearing from people we're a small school we can't do it stop saying that let's say we're small school look all we can offer to our kids it it needs to somebody

needs to look into why we are combining with Williamson and doing this to our girls just like today the girls at 12:30 were told there's an open gym over there tonight what parent can quick drop everything and get their kid to a 4:30 open gym I live in pelm pretty much to go to Williamson kind of sinks for me especially in the winter um you know I have to say when we combine with gananda for lacrosse I don't mind combining with that because we can't offer that here at Maran gananda offers it but their coach went to their ad and said hey look these girls can get busing here now I need early practice practice is there sometimes five to seven a working parent has a hard time getting that in doing that and then

to get to Williamson on top of it when you have other kids and doing other things again I live in pomea so pretty sure she's the farthest kid out it it's hard to ask people to come pick up the kids and give them rides because one now you're asking another parent to take more time to drive there and then go back here so I'm just I want somebody to look into why we combined this year when it sounds like we have enough girls to field at least the varsity team and we do it for soccer we do it for baseball we do it for all these other sports why are we discriminating against girls basketball if it's coaching I'll volunteer I'll take what courses I need and I'll volunteer I don't need a payment I

will do it for the girls so that's all I have to say thank you thank you anyone else sign up can you state your name since we don't have I'm Chris Chris Ashley um I just I'm here to support and my daughter actually and all the other Maran student athletes that really want a Maran varsity team and my daughter came home a couple of days ago and she gave me six names of girls that said they will not play this sport because they didn't want to combine with Williamson and I feel like we could have a really good team I really do because we a have talented athletes in our school and I just wanted to essentially try to from whoever from coach uh deler or whoever no names please oh sorry from coach why

that can't be done or why why she would not even consider it this year that's all I'm just here to support thank you thank you okay next item is vote to go into an executive session any motion to approve I get a second all in favor passes if you are a student here for credit any of the administrators can sign your [Music] paper
