001all right meeting is called the order it's not the record show that only mr monroe is not with us this evening he sends his regrets please stand and join us for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and into the republic for which he stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all [Music] a few changes on the consent agenda because you want to forgive me um so there's a correction to um the name for item 13 and 14. it's jennifer brown walters and we've added item 16 except the resignation for the purpose of retirement of annette hallahan school psychologist at marion junior senior high school effective june 24th 2022 and item 17 approve open spring sports coaching position because we have a

002person here i didn't see it hopefully the sport open is open it's in the oh it's in your it's in the packet online i'm scrolling through i didn't know you know did one just oh is it it's pre-raised for baseball i was just curious i was scrolling through couldn't get to it that was faster anyone have any other questions on agenda if not we have a motion to approve it that was first and second thank you all in favor aye opposed motion passes does anyone signed up for public comments on agenda items no one did and we're going to start with our mid-year update on the junior senior high school okay all right mr weiss put the quicker click or something oh it's up there yep awesome thank you it's up to you the remote

003should be there to turn the tv on rich went to get it oh [Music] would it be easiest if we stood up here we're really trying to figure out where to stand for presentations yes yeah that worked all right we're excited to talk to you about our highlights mid-year highlights we'll call it we've talked to you some at the beginning of the year about our building plan and our goals so we won't go as in depth with all those but we also talk to you about our midday interventions which we're pretty closely tied to our goals five and six so here we go uh the summary of goal one is to increase our supported family indicator by helping families understand available services advocate for their children's needs and support their child's learning and our action

004items in the first half have been including parents guardians in the seventh grade orientation and completing a schoology orientation uh in the second half we're really excited about our open house and enrichment exhibition so that's kind of a spring open house that we're planning and we really want to rework what we've done with open houses in the past and we're hoping to provide some things like child care and potentially food you know using some of our students at to serve as child care and things like that so we're really excited to reimagine that we're excited that some of the kovak mandates have decreased so that we can bring a whole bunch of people into the building that was something that we were really worried about in the fall so we are still working on parent

005square as a communication tool some folks may be familiar with that from other districts it's kind of like a app-based communication tool that can send text messages and things to parents it makes communication from school to home a lot more fluid and we are also working on a communication roadmap for families so that's what's still to come for that goal to be accomplished by the end of the year mrs steiner is going to talk to you about goal too thank you all right so goal number two is for us to increase our engaged student indicator on that whole child survey and just we're planning to do that by increasing our relevance our real world relevance within our curriculum and so some of the things that we did at the first half of the year we

006had our learning standard group so our departments meet in the fall and just collaborate and talk about ways that they can make their curriculum more relevant and increase examples that relate to things that are happening in the world for our students so they've taken that those conversations and tried to integrate into their teaching this year our marketing class created a video to advertise some of our electives so that it can appeal to students so they can see what they would actually be learning and doing in some of their classes and so that they can sign up for those things that are relevant to them and then we have a career plan document that kind of outlines you can open it up when you receive the document or the slides today but um it outlines kind

007of from ninth through twelfth grade what we're hoping for our students to learn in terms of their college and career readiness so kind of increasing their relevance to after school as well and so these were kind of all of the action steps that we hope to accomplish for the year in terms of increasing our relevance and we accomplished them in the first half of the year so our plan for the second half of the year is just to revisit that with our project leader team and see you know how can we expand that or what more needs to be done in that area and then goal number three is for the it addresses the safe indicator in our whole child survey and it was really intended to provide some professional development for our staff to

008help create a more accepting and inclusive environment for all of our students and really you work on using like student-friendly language that's accepting for everyone and so in the first half of the year we had a speaker jeannie gainsberg come and she spoke to the staff about how to use respectful language that does create like a more inclusive and accepting environment for our staff we've also been working on our function based thinking training which melissa levy and i have been trying to reach the goal for the year is to have all of our staff trained in function based thinking and really what that is is just a way of thinking about behavior thinking about the reasons that it happens and kind of the why behind behavior so that we can try things in the environment

009to reduce the likelihood that we'll see those challenging behaviors and then we give these so for the second half of the year we'll continue the function based thinking trainings um our hope is also to provide some tier one lessons to our students on that accepting and respectful language um keep our bulletin boards updated so that it really reflects the diversity of our student population and so they can kind of see themselves in the bulletin boards and then just explore any ongoing professional development needs or opportunities for our staff and then um goal number four addresses the safe indicator the whole check whole child survey and that is really about providing students with direct instruction on um social emotional skills like self-management listening conflict resolution problem solving responsibility and like decision making those types of things

010and so we um for the first half of the year we administered a student survey to all of our students that opted into that so that was tier one and that was really to help us identify what some of our students believe their needs are where are their strengths where are they feeling challenged in those areas and then our clinical staff our counselors and social workers went with mrs miller and to boces and participated in a multi-day social emotional training um to kind of look at some of the social emotional benchmarks from new york state and to get an understanding of those types of things and then along with that um there's several of us well three of us trained or registered for what's called a web training which we'll use to kind of bring

011in um a curriculum web stands for where everyone belongs and so um myself mrs johnson and mrs verweer plan to go and become trainers um where we can integrate the where everyone belongs training with uh pe and health and so we're still in the process of kind of learning more about that process and that curriculum and so that'll be kind of where we had in the second half of the year thank you so goals five and six are our instructional goals in their injuring your senior high school so and we we kind of put this out the staff as a rebound our goal was to get back to where we had been previous to the covid19 pandemic so in 2019 and we didn't love the word rebound football games and i didn't really address the

012football comment here that at the beginning of the year our we were on a football theme so that's why everything's kind of themed in football but we should have used like recovery like a fumble recovery right instead of rebound so the fumble recovery goal uh is to uh for i ready specifically in grade 7 8 we are hoping to get to 35 percent proficiency in reading high ready scores and 50 student proficiency in math i ready score so that's students on or above grade level on those diagnostics you'll feel like and i feel like we feel like those are low numbers and they are certainly we want a 100 proficiency but we're basing these numbers on where we've been in the past specifically pre-pandemic so let's take a look at some mid-year results you can

013see that we're not where we want to be in any of these grade levels but i will say my belief is that the middle level has been impacted the most by the interruption in learning during 2020 by the hybrid schedule last year we've seen that in student behavior and we're also seeing that in student results so we know where our work lies we know that if we're going to meet these goals these were end of year goals 35 percent in reading and 50 in math if we're going to meet those goals or even get closer to those goals we've got a lot of work to do with that middle level math and reading but we know that that work will pay off for a long time that for the next four years we'll see the

014impact of the work that we can do right now with our seventh and eighth graders teachers have have really taken a close look at this data and are planning targeted instruction as a result based on student identified areas need of growth in addition we will continue to work with our guaranteed and viable curriculum that's what gbc stands for guaranteed and viable curriculum what all students will learn and should have access to our midday intervention blocks give us a great opportunity to intervene with students that might be struggling and we continue vertical alignment conversations across grade levels we also had a regents proficiency goal that was to return to the 86.3 percent proficiency that we saw in 2019 so the last round of normal regions exams that this building did was 2019. and we'd like to

015get back to 86.3 which we acknowledge would be a pretty huge accomplishment given all that our students have been through if they can get back to where they were conceivably in 2019 and we've done a lot of great things if we can even get close to that i would say we're doing great so this is a midterm data which we know midterms are not a regents exam but for the most part we try to make them parallel and rigor and format so these exams were very similar to a regents exam and covered content that's been covered with students and regents courses this year so you can see varied results but overall pretty strong results the english exam for example the one right about top there 86 proficiency we normally give our english regions in january

016so we gave an old english regions because regents were cancelled in january regions exams where so we just used an old english and regents exam and we graded it the same way it would be and we had 86 percent proficiency which is our goal uh for the year i should say our goal is always 100 but we're pretty close at 83 and a half percent proficiency rate on midterms i would say that our goal of 86.3 percent at the end of the year is well within reach so we're feeling good about this data same goals as with middle level we continue to work on that guaranteed and viable curriculum we're using those mid-day intervention blocks to be responsive to what students need and where they're showing us they need support and we continue our vertical

017alignment conversations so we continue to believe ted lasso style questions comments silly question you said update bulletin boards do you mean all of them or deserve one specific one that you continuously update um i think we would like to update all of them um but as much we're trying to get our students involved in updating them so that they really have as much involvement and can like have that representation themselves and so which are the ones they're willing to take on they're willing to hand over yeah and i think it's like a general just updating the signage around the building to make sure that it's all very inclusive and reflective of our entire student population yep anyone else thank you guys thank you for your time no this is for later later ordering course i

018suggest we start with the sports discussion so that our visitor can leave that's all right well no let's start with the form then if you don't mind because it leads into why we're having here i don't mind okay so we had our forum i'm looking for my list of topics and john i think you're the only one who was not here that's here now for the forum so the topics that we ended up discussing at the forum were virtual learning in community schooling funding grants and special interest administrative functions which grades classes and sports for homeschool private schools then we had a super fun conversation about masks and coaching sure because our life was not complete at the time without a super fun conversation at that point so lots of these were great conversations um

019i do think the forum is something that we want to continue to do it's not something we've needed to do before because we've been able to have different sorts of meetings where people could come in and talk to us we had the kindness akc the akc committee um but then we had the cod id happen um but this i think was a great way for people to come back to the building and be able to talk to us and get there have conversations with us not just talk at us and let's not be able to reply there are some great points brought up and we didn't have all the answers on sports which is why we invited mrs elizer to be here today um there are a lot of others but this one particular we

020weren't sure of the rules surrounding not everyone's 100 percent clear on what happens when schools merge does it impact the entire all schemes in that season doesn't just the team that's merging can students from marion who pay taxes and go to a private school come back and play on a married sports team and could homeschool students plays we had a lot of questions on sports you were happy your ears weren't ringing so we thought rather than sending mr babies to you to run around we just invite you here and see what you can tell us about sports i'm happy to be here all right the first the first thing i'll cover is the homeschooling and i have a short video um from robert zeus he's the new york state public high school athletic association's executive

021director and he pretty much spells it out in in the video um students have to be enrolled in marion they have to be a bona fide student taking courses here this video the purpose of this video interpretation is to provide some explanation and insight on the new york state department of education's bona fide student regulation since this is not a nissa rule but a new york state department of education regulation this video interpretation does not replace the written and approved language of the commissioner of education nor the board of regents the bona fide student regulation only permits a student to represent the school in which they are taking three courses plus physical education only students who are enrolled in three courses plus physical education are allowed to participate in interscholastic athletic programs at their schools

022if a student lives in the district however chooses to attend a different school or to be homeschooled these students are not considered to be bona fide students of the public school where they live any official request for an interpretation of this new york state department of education regulation should be directed to the new york state department of education thank you did he know we were going to be asking so he created this every year i have to go to a mandatory athletic director's workshop and they they review all these rules so they um the last couple years they've been putting videos to some of the rules so it makes it easier for athletic directors to point parents in the in the right direction that's great a long time yeah yeah okay so i always thought

023that homeschooled kids could play in the district that they would like for some reason and it's a new york state education department role so it says to be a student that takes three courses in physical education do we ever allow students to do like half and half is it you're either a public school educate child or student or you're not is that pretty much how that goes oh you signed up for homeschooling you signed up for homeschooling okay otherwise scheduling true but he calls it out so that's why i'm asking okay so that it answers that i'm going to either private school or a well we're being home schooled they answered the home school so he said private if you want if you pay taxes and you do not go to your public school the

024technicality comes in and where my question would come in the private school is if a private school was local to us and we were to merge teams is that allowed yes but again there's some steps that have to take place all right one you know school district has to agree with the public school um two it has to be approved by league and section five there's forms that need to be filled out i signed them mr davis signs them so yeah so so basically but when you but when you merge with a private school you if it's modified soccer let's say you have to offer it to all those kids that go to that private school whether they're a williamson resident whether they're a wayne resident a sodas resident you open it up to all

025of those it's like when we merged with newark for the football they had to let all of marion students correct that met the requirements be able to to try out and they took the top so there might be people if we were to merge with a private school there might be people that attend marion district itself that won't make it on the team because of other people who possibly yes possibly depending on the size of the yeah the size of the team the size of the team and all that type of stuff yeah no does marion have a rule that we don't look at merging if we have enough to do an in-house team on our own anyway but that i've not heard of us having enough kids and trying to hurt you um yeah

026we're not gonna you know we're not gonna look to you know like for a basketball team merge 10 kids with you know another school with 10 kids that's i mean we wouldn't do that you know so it's more for our it would be miriam look at it for programs we needed some body support if the best way to the best way i would put it was would be to you know provide opportunities for the marion central school student athletes to maintain our programs and provide opportunities for them all right um we have we currently have 10 mergers i don't know if you're aware that or not all right in the fall we merge with football with newark and that's how that and work at all levels we do have kids playing at the modified jv

027and varsity level um cross country this is a new one this year we're merged with sodas and actually sodas comes here we're the host for that um tennis was a new one this year with with gananda and we hosted it here in marion um in the winter we had varsity swimming with sodas at sodas obviously we don't have a pool so again we provide opportunities for our kids that want to swim varsity alpine skin with sodas and again that's held at sodus a new one this year was indoor track with gananda and that was held here right here in marion and then wrestling with williamson that was pretty much all levels we had modified in our jv slash varsity wrestler that went over to williamson and this spring we're looking again with modified baseball that

028we merged last year with them and that will be at gananda sappa with gananda all levels and we held that at marion and then a new one a new opportunity for our kids is the cross for for girls and boys at all levels so essentially the process would be if there was a school that wanted to try to merge a specific sport their athletic director would come talk to you yeah we we meet once once a month and we have you know open dialogue conversation you know hey you know we have small numbers you know what do you have you know can we work something out in our enrollment is you know it's it's not you know getting any bigger so the effect on our teams or the schools teams when we merge the teams

029what does that affect all right at the at the varsity level it could it could raise you up a classification all right um it depends you know for um like football for instance with newark they're they're a b-school and we're a d school and even taking you know percentage of our numbers and adding them to the north they still remain a class b school all right you know if if they were to move an a it might be a different you know situation they might not want us so potentially that could happen at the modified duty level it does not matter and there's only that one sport or the sport that merged so yeah it's just the one sport that you merge with with that district because obviously we have multiple mergers with different school

030districts yeah they all would affect it yes yeah every one of those schools is of a different size you have a different size correct i think that answers my questions okay anyone else have questions so um i guess i would be curious about if um like is that decisions and discussions that are made like like you said at the meeting or if there was community interest um like we had expressed how how do we get from community member to talking to you about potential of a merger happening if there was an interest in the community yeah they can they can call me but i mean i go through my administration i'll absolutely have conversations with them as well okay and we would direct them to their athletic director okay i would i would think okay

031so specifically was a palmyra christian school suited who that question came up but their the appropriate way would be them to go to their district to then have their person come talk to you would be the appropriate chain of command versus versus a student who's not attending your school coming talking to you about their school which they have no authority to request the merger right it should come from their next come from their district so if someone was to ask us hey i attend this school we should send them through to their athletic director to talk to you right in private schools they're not league members sure so no i was talking about a marion right student yeah i would say rob that it doesn't have to be married that a private school could seek

032merger with any other public school right it wouldn't have to be it was just that was the specific example that was brought up at the forum there was a student who used to attend here that went elsewhere wanted to play a sport that wasn't offered at that school and wanted to know why they couldn't play here which is where which got us down this okay well how does this all how does all this affect and we had different opinions of what it might be and so we just felt that it was best for the deaf for the school board to have glory come in and talk to us and give us all the same information at the same time so we know what's going on so that was just one specific example but yeah any

033just like any school could talk to another school like but it would be best for a student to go through their own district to have that the district to have a district district conversation versus them i would think that would be the most efficient way of doing something so okay would you be able to afford me the video tomorrow don't send it now but i'll send it to the person who had the question yeah so that yeah they also have it um and so for the home school thing that would have to be a state ad law a statehead change correct so that would have to be something that's pushed at the state level to make a change there before we could even consider it correct so that's with sports what about clubs at school

034that was also a question from what i read for clubs the board can develop policy that may allow someone to participate in clubs so are you ready but it's they always recommend to be based upon what's your policy currently we don't speak to that for homeschooling okay and right now it's difficult because our periods not at the end of the day where we say i don't come in at the end of the day it's smack in the middle of the day where all students are in the milk it's hard to bring someone in well here it is then it's like elementary i was thinking when we were talking sports i i just assumed it was a high school in my head it was all no that did exactly she had just mentioned specifically i think

035chess club we don't have a chess club but if we did have chess club it would require a board policy saying that home school students may participate in this club activity but we don't have a policy either way right now right so it sounds like something we might want to as important to create a policy on one way or the other just that it's in writing what the current policy is you are welcome to stay for the rest but we appreciate your time and we'll understand if you decide to be here thank you and you're welcome just one class just to make sure because sometimes people have asked about music so whatever the activity is it has to be an extracurricular activity so since we consider music high school level to be part of the

036curriculum and they wouldn't be able to participate in a particular level it has to be whatever it is has to be 100 extracurricular it's like the musical if they wanted it to be that music genre that's what we would have to offer is musical so then you have to decide and there has to be a policy about it but it has to be something that is 100 in extracurricular activity it can't be part of any embedded coursework that students could raise i would just say that with our code of conduct for extracurriculars if other students were coming in to participate in any of those i want to make sure that we had a way to make sure that they were also meeting that code of conduct for both academic and behavioral levels and that might

037be where you hit tricky like how do you prove that exactly i mean i don't see how you would with homeschooling but if they were in another school is that are we looking at that point we have to talk the home school the part to allow them to participate in extracurricular is just home school language i do not know if it i'd have to do research specific on somebody who's enrolled in a completely different school okay do you know if any other schools in the area allow homeschoolers to participate i don't know i was just curious if there was what would that could we request a copy of their policy to say just as a jumping off point i would be happy to look and ask thank you we appreciate that thank you so that

038was one of the topics that came out of the forum that we thought we needed i'll get on the same page right away um there was another one about ieps that we wanted to put onto a future meeting there was a lot of discussion on that we need to have a discussion was just understanding the process and where right that was what came out of this what is the iep process what funds does marion get if someone has an iep and where do we spend the funds those are the three big items that were questions do you remember it too that is yeah we need to be careful how far into iets we get as a board because we can't get into people specific oh we didn't want that but it's just the topic came

039up and we also i mean i have a child with one but that doesn't mean what my experience is the same as everybody else's and we just the three of us that were there weren't comfortable enough to go yes this is how an iep works so we just thought that might be a future i think that part of the justice is just to that i think from what i recall was um when we were on a hybrid schedule it was very difficult to meet what was written on the ieps saying that that's the same as every other school district in the state that was a challenge because i think one of the examples is brought up my child is removed from that the resource room if they're only there for two hours and we only

040have the one speciality how do you do that so my belief in hope is now that we're back to normal full-time obstruction that you will never see anyone pulled from and i guess i look to my principles but you're not going to see them pulled from a core content area to receive their special ed service because the special ed service is always meant to be in addition to um those were different times and i think those who people were just trying to get through it and do the best they can to meet the ieps we kind of appreciate that i still think we wanted kind of like we had with mr like okay what are what's an iep how what's the process just not tonight very different things so like i guess if you could

041we would give you we would give you a much better clear because what an iep is is very different than the process of an iep and that's very complicated and it might it might be best to be broken into different meetings and not i don't know it's just as a board member i don't fully understand that and i just think it would be helpful to have a better understanding of what that process is what money do we actually get for special education was another question versus how much money we actually spend we're like but putting those numbers out there like this is the funding we get for special education this is our expense for special education i think would be an eye-opener for many people in our community as well as along with the board

042just having that and so those are those are kind of some of the things that as we were trying to figure out what to put on the agenda michelle and i had back and forth with going this is such a big topic we're not even sure i'm not even sure i can say what i don't know about it because i don't know enough about it so i would be happy to either myself or someone else come let's figure out how we're going to address this at the board level because we have to make sure it stays at the board what our involvement is at a board level so i think we as important i think one of the things i'm thinking is we have a special education plan if your goal is to maintain a

043plan we have one it's a kind of walk you through the plan and the continuum and what that is and how we decide where people go and then look at the funding that we get from the federal level comparison to the over all amount we actually got on special education i think so start there not if you have additional questions okay that sounds this sounds like a good idea if we can do that thank you when you're either ready or needy needs to fill us out of your agenda feel free to discuss amongst yourselves thank you very much though for doing that all right next is nominations for oh wait did anyone else want to talk about anything else at the i think we have lists they'll keep coming up don't worry but i said

044at one point i said well he's a dog with a bone and he just took down seriously writing i'm sure that'll come back up um so it's my understanding this is boces is looking for one of us to be a nominee is anyone interested in being the nominee for the boces on board right along i can't do it uh but in here it did give us the date of the 27th of april for the vote do we want to discuss that now when we want to vote because we normally do it in the morning right yeah i mean you guys can decide when i just need a forum we usually do it at 7 15 7 7 15. so i happen to know what day of the week that is i'll just say right there

045too in front of me uh wednesday april 27th it's always on wednesday so should we just plan on at 7 15 on the 27th and then we don't have to discuss it again it's in front of us now i'll send that out yes yes the boces budget boat and the election board members can i nominate jason to buy donuts hey jason all right so we can now cast the floor off to mr babis sure i have uh under my name is the masking update we did receive the newest guidance from the state um it didn't come when they said it was going to come because there seemed to be a lot of consternation about what to include in that new guidance which is always worrisome to me because the devil is always in the details

046um i was pleased to see when we looked at the guidance we looked at what specifically is actually required what are the must do's and the must do's as far as masking have to do with students or staff who test positive for covid may return after the fifth day but must wear a mask from days six through ten that was the big takeaway from these three weeks of hour and ten longer working on the new cobot guidelines um and that seems reasonable because we're allowing them to come back before the 10 or 14 days we used to do even and it's only regarding positive students you know we may encourage close contacts to wear a mask as well but we cannot require them to wear a mask and they may continue to come to school

047throughout unless of course they test positive really what this comes down to is what we used to always do as far as illness is if your child is showing any symptoms of illness or health you know health difficulties please just keep them home i mean we're going back i hope to more of a common sense approach to this um the only thing that can upset the common sense approach to this however is if people continue to send their child to school sick i mean that's one of the things uh you know that could derail it particularly if it starts to push up numbers again so that was the one part regarding the guidance and the other thing is we are still required to um do weekly testing of our non-vaccinated staff that is still a

048requirement for us um we've been doing that without much uh that hasn't been a big burden upon the district thus far we do i you know i sent it out the letter hopefully you've all had a chance to read it but one of the big things for us in that letter big thing for me in that letter is to understand that it is a personal choice of the parents now it's also the personal choice of our staff members so there cannot be any type of harassment pressuring bullying of mask wearing or mask not wearing this is true choice and to understand that people are in different circumstances have different viewpoints and we're going to honor that without making them feel bad about that so that's where we are right now that was one of my

049favorite coconut updates i've done in two years it took two years to get a good one right i'm one for i don't know 36. so um celebrate the small things yeah that's where we are right now um our numbers we get a case every now and then and again they're always quarantined for the first five days and then when they come back they must wear a mask we are continuing with our health screenings in the morning making sure that you know no one got in here perhaps with a fever or noticeably ill to make sure we do that part of it and you know the hand sanitizers are still available masks are still available um so you know we're we are keeping in place some of those things that are good for not just covet

050but any type of illness over these months i'm very thankful that they can come back after five days because 10 days out was way too long without 14 days worse so way too long about being with your being in class so and you know i'm not hearing anything about i watched a special on it the other day not hearing anything about any wild card variant out there um so we're really hoping that we're going to learn to live with the current version of covid in its um current format anything else on covet nope let's be done with it and the other thing i have with your approval is the district calendar uh thanks largely mostly probably 99.999 to mrs mitchell it's about lining up our yearly calendar that matches the requirements of our contractual agreements

051as well as matching up the best we can with our local boces because it's difficult when students you know the boces students are in in person we are not for different things i wouldn't say it was easy because i didn't do it but i would say what was nice about this year's calendar is we are we're able to get in the correct number of days that we're required to get in without having to um get the conversations with the units about coming in earlier in august or having only one day to open the year the two days to open the school year with staff in here has been monumental and preparing for the year because there are so many requirements so many trainings we have to get in and have our staff engaged in before

052the students can even come through the door so that's been monumental and the holidays have kind of lined up to how we would normally expect them to line up so that would be an action item unless there are any questions i move we approve the calendar for the 22-23 school year do we have a second a second thank you all in favor post there's your calendar you can did you have anything else you wanted to surprise us with no surprises mr walker you're up so the first item i have under my name is the non-resident tuition um about the last couple meetings that we wanted jason was one who really wanted to see it so do we want to table this for the next so he's here i don't have questions on it i can

053tell you that so does anyone else or should we table this i'm okay with that rob do you want to jason was one really interested in it so i think we oh are you okay if we table until the next year sure yeah and discuss it just shorten it yeah that was the longest item underneath my name so this should go quick uh capital project update um we opened the bids this week so we're very hopeful we were supposed to open it last week but because of some things that needed to get moving around a little bit we had to reschedule for this week um so creatures crossed do you have any idea how many people have picked up big packages yes um i believe there was three gcs there was different subcontractors there was

054a thousand because we're at work we're seeing bid prices skyrocket right now which has made me very nervous about this project so it could be a long day this week so i other than that i don't have any additional news that is the big news so any other questions on that project or no okay uh financial report is enclosed for your repo approval there's no significant changes from the last financial report the expenditures and revenues are going as expected okay there's an action motion passes now it didn't come up and i was waiting to make sure neither of you brought it up i'm going to jump ahead of administrators here so i received a email on the wayne county board of supervisors in their sales tax review committee that even with their banner year of

05519 plus percent increase in sales tax this year uh they're pretty confident they will be retaining 100 of the sales tax and that is pretty much a done deal lost my mind a little bit this afternoon this does not make me at all happy uh the distribution will go to the municipalities at 2.5 million what did we get when they gave us what do we get every year for taxes because we don't get a percentage anymore we get a flat amount oh it's a percentage it's based on enrollment it's a percentage so the sales tax yeah no 200 so we're capped we we get a person there's a certain amount of money that goes to schools that's broken down by total students in the county but it used to be the schools got one percent

056of all sales tax collected and then they changed to this amount but you can't get more than this the cap is 5.4 million which is divided up amongst all the wayne county schools based on enrollment and what averages is 260 000. so they're pretty sure it's a done deal that they're going to take away 260 thousand dollars from the students a little upset with that i forwarded that to our uh wayne county as vote president and we're on the agenda for next week at our meeting oh good because i've emailed them and asked them to let me come speak everyone on the board that's on this committee at the county i asked if i could please come speak at their next meeting i have copy that if anyone wants to read it and i also

057made a copy of and nadine has them everyone who is on the committee if you'd like to send an email to them and let them know what you think of them taking 260 000 away from the marian students please feel free to do that little men it has never been the county's money it has never they keep saying taking the money back from the schools never belonged to them ever ever so all right that's the one that got me all fired up someone else want to say anything about the county and taking our money i just know that one of the things that we were told initially that there would be no changes for next year but they were going to continue to review it and i also know that it appears that these meetings

058that they've discussed this have not happened in a public session they have not they've all been quietly done on the side um ms ambrose would like to let the schools know so that they have time to put it into their 22 23 budgets was in the uh meeting minutes on february 8th uh oh was it wasn't that right in regards to the tax billing not positives after what part they're also going to make us do our own tax bills too but but they did that but yes they're sneaking things in and it's a little unfair i did tell them in my email to them that i was going to be sharing this tonight and so i'm sharing this tonight and that you have the emails and we can make them available to anybody who wants

059them the more letters the better please so so just emails a little history on that and the county sales tax revenue was originally designed where the school districts would get one-third of the revenue and then back in 19 i think it was in the early 90s they put a cap on it which was the 5.4 million which is their current revenue was i believe over 80 million a year so the school districts are getting 5.4 million out of that 80 million dollar plus revenue and added 19 they have increased they had a banner year um sales tax revenue and so yeah i'm i'd be upset too i am upset yeah yeah what are their reserves i don't know they keep getting yourself too much money yeah you know the problem we don't have they don't

060they don't have to follow the tax cap rules they can go out of whatever tax increase they want a quarter of a million dollars a year we couldn't how many years would it take us to mandatory raise max to get to that we'd have to lose programs or something to get there before we could raise enough money correct yeah just so people are aware why i'm mad we can't make that back up we can't even tax you to get it so our our new revenue this year total new revenue is for this next coming budget year between state aid and tax levy is 400 000. so yeah 26 thousand dollars is a big hit why didn't you always do this they wait for something else to get loud and they try to sneak it through

061and this time they didn't even do it in public all right we can't answer why they do what they do upset now i'm going to put on a happy face because it's our administrator's turn cooling it down my jets are tucked [Music] all right [Laughter] so at the elementary some things that we've been doing since the last time i was here um we are wrapping up our second trimester of school which is amazing to me like that's where we are so the second trimester ends this friday um so that's for grades k through five our sixth graders do a quarterly schedule to get them ready for the junior senior high um but it's amazing to me that our year is pretty much two-thirds over already um so report cards that means report cards will be

062going home they go home march 18th for grades k through five so teachers um have been working hard on doing the data collection that goes with that so parents get accurate information on how their child is performing and a narrative of how they're doing in class um state testing is right around the corner for grades three through eight um so ela will happen at the end of march math is in april um so we've been doing parallel assessments in grades three through six so students have an experience with an assessment that looks like the state assessment and most importantly so that teachers get data on how students are performing and can do some targeted instruction based on where students need support or enrichment also just this weekend we had some fifth and sixth graders who

063participated in elementary all-county so we had some students who participated in band some students who participated in choir um i talked to miss lewamirski our choir teacher and mrs chief in our band teacher today who said the kids did an amazing job this weekend and felt like it was a positive experience all the way around after two years of no opportunity to do this so that was fabulous for them um and lastly this week actually over break they started but our mini camps that mrs steiner and i talked to you about at our building update like those are out and running so over break was our first one um with a volleyball mini camp and now we've started our other offerings so things like rabbit camp have started today was our first day you heard

064about our ag programming so rabbit camp is another way to like hook kids early into our programming that we have um drafting camp started today for k2 which was very popular we get so popular in fact we had to add an additional section of that minicamp so i don't know i guess that would be the other exciting thing to me um i think mini camps we ended up with 172 students signed up out of marion elementary um which is awesome and that's exactly what we wanted like a chance to provide enrichment and other opportunities for kids to explore an interest that they might not get to explore during the normal school day so yeah mrs steiner has some other elementary updates and i just can't help but think about our rabbit that we have when

065you think about rabbit camp it's not just any rabbit it's an 18 pound rabbit so it's pretty big she's a big girl she's um so at the elementary school some things that we've been doing around our mtss system is we did uh what we call the tfi check-in so the tfi is the tiered fidelity inventory it's a tool that we use to check in on you know what we're doing for some students for all students and a few students depending on their needs to make sure that we're following this system and making a difference ultimately for students and so we've been checking in on that and made some adjustments to our plans going forward um so those things are all kind of in progress our night notes we had a delay in logging our night

066notes for a little while so now we're getting up to speed i don't have an exact number but i think we are well on our way to um achieving our next milestone of 7 500 night notes in our quest for 10 000. um we're planning our quest our um we'll have like a mini celebration when we get to 7 500 and that will be we're hoping with the weather beginning to break a little scavenger hunt in the community with some pro social um like community engagement type of things so more to come on that and then to break up march a little bit we are doing a celebration um again connecting to our pro social skills goal so we're focusing our night notes on pro social skills so students sharing being kind with each other

067um you know just other acts of kindness and showing that they care about each other and when they earn those night notes um once their grade level gets to a hundred nightmares then they'll be eligible to participate in our celebration at the end of the month which we're confident everyone will be able to achieve 100 and that will either look like potentially like shamrock shakes or a movie and popcorn or for some of our older students perhaps a free throw contest or tournament of sorts so those are some fun things happening in the elementary school at the junior senior high school also we are working on boosting those bkcs so mrs levy has been working hard to encourage everyone to send their bkcs and this week in particular is a week where it's very important

068to send your bkcs um anyone who sends three staff or students um will earn a doughnut at the end of the week so staff and students i'm sorry i don't know if we could get it to donate to mrs lovely will be working on making sure everyone who sends three this week a doughnut at the end of the week and then thinking back a little bit to february our ffa club had a flower sale on valentine's day and so they are doing some fundraising with their flowers and they will use the money that they earned for some club activities and their upcoming field trips so some good stuff happening there ffa no longer stands for future farmers of america it just stands for ffa fun fact they felt like i think the feeling was that

069ffa was limiting in that because it's so such a large organization and what they hope to accomplish is so fast that they didn't want to just be a farming committee [Music] um on that note where our welding program is up and coming we won't say up and running yet we haven't welded anything yet but we're getting darn close the classes are meeting they're preparing they're learning skills and safety and materials are being assembled and our welding stations are being put up um mr nortier and our facilities group has been a huge help with that so it's it's taking shape there's tables in place there's four coverings in place because you can't weld over a hardwood floor so yeah i know so you can it's just a bad idea yeah that's true especially so it's very

070exciting to see that taking shape and i'm really excited to see our first weld here soon musical is this week if you haven't heard mamma mia i think it's still available only a few very few tickets available so get your tickets to mamma mia winter athletics are pretty much wrapped up we've got girls modified basketball still having some competitions but um otherwise all of our winter sports are done had some really great sectional competitions for a lot of our set our varsity teams including ethan welsh is uh one of our track and field indoor track and field athletes who took a sectional title on the pole ball congratulations to him we are really right in the heart of the academic year as dr lloyd said two-thirds of the way through and i've i've been trying

071to sell to the students this is the time to buckle down um but yeah if you think about periods in the school year that can kind of make or break a student this period between february break and spring break is a big one because we know that after spring break it becomes very much wrapping things up and preparing for end of year exams but right now we are in the heart of the content and instruction and um we really need students to set themselves up for success at the final push um had some fun field trips i wanted to share with you our high school spanish classes went to casa mexicana in town and had a field trip over there for lunch recently students loved it had a great experience learned more about the culture

072and everything behind that restaurant and our horticulture and environmental science classes did i already tell you about this to integral i felt like i talked about it so much okay i didn't um i got to go along so i was like a little kid because i was so excited um that's that big huge greenhouse just north of 104 up in ontario and it's really incredible the science behind what they do in there and our tour guide was actually a marion graduate james williams so that was pretty cool as well he's i think the head of marketing and sales so for integral so that was kind of a cool full circle moment to see a marion graduate giving current marion students a tour of a such a advanced facility in terms of science and infrastructure and

073coming up in march we have an instrumental all-county band we'll be here we're hosting this year march 18th and 19th so there'll be students from all over wayne county coming here to show off their instrumental band skills that's the update from the junior senior high school smeller so i've got really some exciting things at this time of the year where students are thinking about deep into what they're doing i'm already starting to plan for next year um and so one of the big things that the state has been releasing our webinar specifically on um each of the content areas and what the big focuses are so i spent days watching them learning about them probably the biggest thing is that the next gen standards will begin for grades dk8 next year and the new the

074assessments in spring of 2023 are going to be based on the next gen standards it's a district we've already shifted to them because there's not a lot of differences there are some but it will officially transition um so and then the algebra test will be the year following in 2024 so it's just making sure and thinking through what we have to to do differently um into how to make sure the teachers are not overwhelmed by the change but understand that they're coming and how to manage that um i have been and will be coming to you soon i would anticipate in terms of the library in terms of our materials our process and our protocols and when we have book challenges so i have been learning more about it just along with all the other

075districts in the wayne finger lakes region participated in a virtual with a lawyer last wednesday and there's another full day session that i plan to attend in may that also is about how to legally deal with book challenges and um because it is a big issue right now across the country so um working with our librarian and making sure that our our policies are as up-to-date as they can be and so we will be making some recommendations to people pertaining to that and have been working on the grants grants all got kicked back in terms of which everybody did so just trying to figure out how to use the right words for them to um hit approved we don't have a mr white so he has a name tag it's clearly not him i failed

076to mention the disney trip um which was a big deal that are mostly choir but some band students went to disney over february break but just before and during february break and had an extremely successful trip one that we planned very nervously and cautiously and credit goes to mrs guck and mrs maine and frau thompson for planning such a successful trip during covid of all times but they did it everybody came home healthy and had a great time and only positive reports i won't go into any depth because i believe mrs maine plans to come and update the board on that trip okay elementary school um all counties and there were students from other districts that were in that whole county but that was their very first performance ever in their school career because of

077when kovich sat school down and when concerts happened where our district was still able to have some some concerts along the way not all the districts were able to so i just thought that was kind of cool that our district had been able to offer that as an experience for our students when our districts hadn't been able to do that so it was one of those things he said they're going yeah we did something we had a positive so i'd like to know what shamrock shake day happens if you need an extra hand i'm sure [Laughter] um we're talking about positives did everyone notice the board received three bkcs i don't think that gets us donuts but we did receive 3b cases did everyone see there all right so thank you to those who submitted

078them we did get them i don't know when people submit them if they want everyone knowing they submitted it so thank you we do appreciate that policy review it's not me uh yeah largely again spoiler played language right out of the regulations look at our operations to make sure we're following the policy appropriately so anyone have any questions on any of the first reads i do know all right moving right now we don't vote on that until the next time so up next are our consent agenda items does anyone have any questions on any of those i'd like to vote for mrs halligan if anyone has any questions do we have a motion to approve the consent agenda thank you all in favor aye all right was there anyone signed up for open confidence thank

079you all for coming our next meeting is the 21st have a happy st patrick's day thank you for your gifts i know i was going through them but once i say we're done people are going to leave if you are a student and you need to have a paper signed as soon as we are done you may take your paper to anyone seated over here would anyone like to send us out of here this evening mr marshall would you like to thank you sir thank you all in favor all right motion passes we are adjourned you
