Express themselves and learn valuable vocational skills by designing one-of-a-kind cards for All Occasions soon to come from strive is a collaborative Mission with the Willow Grove Baptist food pantry to divert fresh produce items that are uneaten by students to people that are in need likewise the active Academy is stirring up some new opportunities for students with active inspires where students utilize technology skills to create artistic items such as dinner table Place cards that benefit both the students and the staff but the reason for tonight's board honor is because we are proud to announce that Miss Kathy rafter Miss Cara Gimbal and Miss Kate Pringle teachers from both programs were asked to engage in an interview recently with kyw's Raquel Williams to discuss the uniqueness of both of their programs the piece highlights the mission of

both programs citing specific examples such as the annual visit from SEPTA to teach students how to use public transit and the new greeting card business established by strive and now Mr Barrios principal of Abington senior high will discuss the impact of both of our programs thank you it seems like only yesterday that I was in receipt of the active Academy's initial proposal for a mobile coffee car once we were able to operate operationalize a plan for the coffee cart the program expanded and continues to flourish I could not be prouder of the success of our students teachers and staff that includes paraprofessionals and job coaches the active Academy's Perfect Blend plays an integral part of daily life at Abington Senior High School each morning there is a very long line of students waiting to place

band good evening and thank you Mrs Brown Dr fetcher and members of the board of directors it's my pleasure to share a very special and recent media clip with you this evening last week on November 2nd members of our Abington Senior High School marching band and color guard performed in a pep band at a Philadelphia Phillies pep rally in the city hosted by Fox 29's Good Day Philadelphia program we are really proud to highlight this happening with you and our larger community and I would like to extend very special recognition to our entire team here in the district this extends not only to our students band directors and staff who in less than 48 hours created a program practiced and prepared to be performance ready for public consumption and media airing um to our community

relations coordinator who brought this initial invitation to our senior high school principal Mr Barrios and band director Mr Joe dutado again in less than four to eight hours reached out and coordinated with our CFO our coordinator coordinator of receiving and all of the receiving staff to logistically move a very large group of students and instruments again in under 48 hours to Center City Philadelphia for a very momentous occasion so um I think I've covered everybody in there but um it really does take an entire Village and Community to know where our strengths are where our areas of growth are and to make these memorable and meaningful experiences happen for our students so we thank you for that and recognize all of those who played a hand um and a role in that so please enjoy

the following brief clip and thank you for continuing to support the Arts and ASD both here at home and with the larger community [Applause] after the late night last night we it's always take it easy for a couple of hours are you ready okay uh what's your name Joe dutado and what is your job I'm the director of bands at Abington Senior High School I think that's in Abington isn't it yeah how many how many folks are here uh we've got about 54 with us is the band bigger than that no this is our this is a compliment everybody made it out thank you for coming out so let's kick this off what are we going to do we're going to do Take Me Out to the Ball Game but first we should probably introduce

participate in public comment is 267-715-3717 and is being featured on the screen at this time you will be able to join the meeting by calling in on your mobile or landline phone if there is anyone present who would like to make a comment please use the microphone either to your left or to your right and be sure to state your name and address good evening Dr Thatcher and board of school directors my name is Mike McHugh I live at 1243 Fair Acres Road in Abington Township I have two children in the school district one in the 12th grade and the other in eighth grade my eighth grade student was recently asked to take a survey in social studies class some of the questions he was asked to respond to were regarding whether a photo ID

should be CR should be required to vote foreigners currently residing the United States have the right to vote should the government continue to fund Planned Parenthood and what was his stance on abortion just to name a few I understand this was done as a lead up to election day they took a pause from the regular curriculum they were attempting to determine what their stance would be on candidates currently running for office according to the Abington Middle School website regarding the socialized curriculum it states that the school district will provide students with an in-depth study of the history geography and politics of the world the eighth grade curriculum in particular presents a combined thematic and chronological approach to American history starting with pre-colonial times through the period of reconstruction if I'm not mistaken the Reconstruction Era

in the United States ended in the late 1870s Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916. I doubt very high that voter ID was a pressing Topic in the United States of America in the late 1800s the topic of the legality of abortion was argued by the courts in the 1970s as a parent I'm extremely concerned about surveys like this that our children are being asked to answer does a typical 14 year old understand rights of Voters of illegal issues around abortion what is the motive behind surveys like this if it doesn't apply to curriculum being taught it would be nice if the school district filed the curriculum that they supposedly aim to teach our children and let parents deal with our children and teaching them morals ethics and values about divisive political agendas thank you for

your time thank you for your voice hey good evening Joe Rooney I live in Ardsley first like I'm going to start off always I'm going to ask Saint Charles Lawanda if he would protect our students and open the hearts and minds of this board and the administration he's a great Charles luanga and Ugandan Martyrs would be wonderful guides for the school district um Veterans Day outstanding presentation what a beautiful rendition of the national anthem it's great to see everybody up here and that young lady did an incredible job thank you for doing that I have to say one thing I think and I may be a little bit biased but I think the high school principal Mr Barrios had the best picture that was shown up there if there if I could request to get

it rerun I would but that guy looked awesome so that is a lean mean fighting machine that was pictured in there so that was just great so I may be slightly biased but if anybody's interested November 10th is a Marine Corps birthday and if you would all like you can wish Mr barius to say happy birthday Marine because we all have the same birthday we're all green and we're all the same birthday so that was fun to see that right up there um I'm going to lead in and I'm going to go over my three minutes I'm sure you're not going to let me extend so I'll have to play it over into the next time thank you so much for talking about that survey so um what I would like to start out with

is I think that it's that I'm right if I put in a right to know request that all of the directors get that at least that's I've gotten some feedback on that so last two meetings ago it was even more than that the contract was extended for uh Dr Thatcher so I was surprised to see that coming up already so I asked a simple question how many meetings did they have and who attended the meetings before you negotiated the contract I also wrote some School director said how much was that worth I got no answers none I'm going to assume you guys don't know how much that contract's worth so basically it was a no bid 2 million dollar contract over five years that's what that's mine you can check my math and I'll share

it with you all okay so but the problem was I was told to put in a rate to no request so of course you know when I put in write to no request it takes 40 days to get an answer because you submit it there's five days then there's the response that says it needs to be delayed for another 30 days for legal review Etc and then I got an answer and for everybody that's watching one meeting in August is what I was told I don't believe it but one meeting in August is all that you had for that contract I don't know if you all have read it but it's a very complicated contract and to do the math it takes a while so that's a little disconcerting that's normal for right to know

requests so this morning I've gotten a lot of replies and I know you all have too because I'm not the only person people write about the concern with all these different surveys and I didn't get a copy of the survey that that gentleman just talked about but I wrote to one of the assistant superintendents and said did this survey get distributed to I think it was the eighth grade I said I'd like to know the answer before I want to thank you thank you for your voice and I know you understand that you have another three minutes at the conclusion and thank you for bringing that up you don't actually listen there's no Demand on the time I appreciate your voice and I have written down your comments thank you so much I look forward

to getting the answers thank you Paul Morris Glenn Road Jenkintown back in June of 2022 Dr fetcher addressed our graduating class of 2022 2021. 2022. their families in our community and talked about eliminating Division and healing our community and yet how do you feel towards Republicans in general how much do white people benefit benefit from advantages in society that plaque people do not have should foreigners currently residing in the United States have the right to vote an amendment outlawing abortion in any situation should be added to the U.S Constitution and in parentheses an abortion is a termination of a woman's pregnancy before the child is born the federal government federal government should allow people to buy any gun they want including handheld automatic military weapons should critical race Theory be taught in our K-12 these

are just a few of the radical questions asked to our 12 13 and 14 year olds why would you authorize such a survey filled with innuendos implications and misleading words as far as I can tell there have been at least three surveys given to the 7th and 8th graders who authorize it who created it what's the purpose of the surveys who conducted it what are you going to do with the results of the surveys and how many other underhanded inappropriate and non-transparent activities are happening in the Abington School System without the knowledge of the parents and grandparents and without their consent parents are responsible for the children not the school district teach our children teach them and stop brainwashing them and trying to indoctrinate them this has to stop and I would like answers to

each one of those questions thank you let's can you confirm that there are no callers on the line that is confirmed thank you anything else within the room who will who would like comment thank you seeing that there are none Dr fetcher first I would like to um ask that Miss Laura Nama from our teaching and learning Department if she could review the curriculum in terms of Election Day lead up to election day sure good evening so leading up to election day we do have our secondary teachers engage in lessons around the election what that typically looks like in each class is they begin with a slide deck that presents all of the candidates for our local election so mirroring what our ballot would look like that we do make efforts to make sure that

the ballot is the same so the candidates are listed in the same order and all candidates are represented after we present the ballot to the students they are given an opportunity to explore the candidates in a variety of ways so we provide links to the candidates websites so students can explore the candidates and they are also given some survey materials that they are welcome to look at but not required to look at those surveys are not collected in any way they're never turned into the teacher and they're not required to complete them but the nature of the surveys are to allow students to explore some of the issues that would be on the ballot and that would influence how a person would vote for a candidate and so the way that it is projected to

students is to explore the candidates explore where the candidates stand on specific issues and the discussion is about how people choose to vote for candidates talking about the variety of things that could go into that decision a candidates character candidates support of specific you know legislation different things like that they're given time to explore and then they take place in a mock election which is anonymous those that information is just in aggregate so it's never like Trace back to a student in any way and then um typically on the day after election day we kind of make an announcement on who won according to the building and so that's what that typically looks like so there are surveys that are given but they're not required they're not collected in any way they're really given as

a frame of reference so students can see the types of things that are influencing how people vote and so that is what a typical lesson would look like and that does happen across secondary Social Studies thank you [Music] surveys sir you can ask your question during public comment this is not a space for you to speak this is not a space and time for you to speak thank you thank you for respecting what I am telling you I appreciate that don't have an opportunity sir sir you do not have an opportunity to speak from that seat there is a time and a place there is a time and a place and you are out of line thank you for my fellow board members are there any additional items to be brought about at this time

out just recently and how badly our kids were hurt by two years of government shutdowns Mass scores are down English scores are down writing is down and guess what the kids at the lowest end of the spectrum are hurt the most so those who are already always talking about it we don't have extra time to waste on politicization and sexualization of our kids you got five extra minutes teach them math you got 10 extra minutes teach them math you got 15 extra minutes throw a little conjugation in there or sentence or Venn diagrams I know these are radical ideas maybe you ought to think about that all right now I'll get back to it okay so Mrs Brown what happened to the data in the Pew research survey it was a link on the web

that I've got the link so I filled it out I had my wife do it I had my daughter do it where'd that data go if you're saying it's not collated I challenge you on that I don't know why the school said that because it's not true Dr melkor I asked you a specific question was that survey given out because I didn't want to address it if the information I got from a parent was wrong yes or no crickets that's what I get all the time 40 days crickets there you go ask a direct question pay 181 million dollars a year we don't get an answer we deserve an answer it's a simple question it's not I'll ask Dr butts or I'm going to ask Mr file get on your phone call up the teacher

and ask him to get the survey out Mr Barrios knows that's how the Marine Corps works you ask a question you get an answer you don't get gift off you all could learn something from that I wish our Equity officer was here because if you looked there are no veterans on the board there's no in the senior Administration maybe we go out and get a couple of veterans we'll get a different thinking in here instead of the group thing these surveys are terrible teachers and school administers administrators teach like ex-cathedral I have no idea if any of you didn't know what that means it means it comes with a certain amount of authority so when you ask a question that says um an amendment outlawing abortion in any situation should be added to U.S Constitution

and abortion is the termination of a woman's pregnancy before the child is born well that's not actually true Dr kleiman or Mrs Mowry they could have written all of these questions because they come from a very specific left-wing political perspective you all know that you all are comfortable with it but guess what there's a significant at least minority of the parents that aren't most don't even know that these surveys were given the parents that do they write me they must write some of you I'm not inventing any of this and my youngest son is in Oceania in a Fighter Squadron right now okay so I don't know what's going on on a day-to-day basis except I hear from it you all do too I don't think you all act on it I don't think you

care and I want to thank you for your voice I'm sure you do thank me well thank you very much for your time and I wish you were as concerned about our kids as you are about this three-minute limit thank you there are mics open to the left and to the right of you if anyone else within the room would like to make a comment saying that there are none Mr Lutz can you confirm that there are no callers on the line that is confirmed thank you Dr fetcher I just want to thank all of our students employees who came out this evening and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to recognize some of the great things that are going on once again in advance thank our veterans for your service Nationwide and closing

remarks from my fellow school board members Mr Allen Miss Frazier a Ditto in response to what Dr Fitcher said Thank you Mr K ay Dr Mowry Dr Murray Dr Murray is there anything you would like to say thank you Mrs Brown uh I would just like to confirm that once again that my mother is not in fact in attendance at this meeting and I'd like to wish all our veterans a happy Veterans Day thank you Miss Glasser no thank you Mr Muhammad nothing thank you Miss faisy nothing at this time Dr clyman I just want to remind everyone that tomorrow is election day and um please vote no matter whom you're voting for it's uh an honor and a privilege and a right that many people died for in this country and um I just

want to remind everyone that uh it is it is not just a privilege but it really is a responsibility as a citizen of the United States to vote sacrificer nothing further thank you thank you everyone for your time have a great evening this meeting is adjourned
