Second. >> Any discussion? All those in favor? Opposed? Motion carries. public comment. >> Sorry. Good evening, Vanessa Green from the Rollins PTA. Uh we just want to extend our sincere gratitude to all contributed to the success of the Sunday's business event. The event drew a soldout crowd of 530 attendees featuring 20 teachers and staff members playing 50 volunteers of parents, students, and staff. Some students I see here. That's awesome. Thank you guys. Um and nine local businesses. The event generated approximately $15,000 in total
revenue. Uh resulting in about 12,000 going back to all four of our PTAs. The realization of this event would not have been possible without everyone's efforts and we do appreciate the support that they have the district >> and beyond the very impressive numbers. Um I've been a part of this district. My kids have been going to school here for about nine years and I can tell you that it's rare to see that many people come together for fun and to support our schools. um the energy in the gym, the excitement from the kids, the laughter that everybody had. It was really an incredible thing to experience. Um at the very end of the event, the Wizards called every single kid down onto the court, invited all the parents to come down and take pictures and
videos to remember that moment. And at that moment, I got a little emotional. [laughter] It's funny because it reminded me why we do these volunteer positions even more so than fundraising. This experience our kids are going to remember until the next time we decide to do it. So, I think that that's really something worth celebrating even more. So, thank you, >> Eric. >> [laughter] >> I just I just want to echo I I had the privilege of bringing my family to the event and uh you can those things can't turn on a dime. Those things so it was so organized. They were so planned. It was I thought it was a flawless execution. >> I didn't know I was crying from relief. >> Yeah. >> Uh everyone left with a with a smile on their
face. So uh the preparation everything the organization the communication it was flawless and it was the the just the the the faces on on the students you know during that entire program was just amazing. Thank you for all you guys >> though I I if I can also say that the show that the Wizards put on is is a lot of fun and is incredibly impressive. But um I did channel a little bit of Miss Figine and every time they hung from you know the the basketball I I was in my head going in the [laughter] >> We haven't submit. >> Thank you so much. Any other public comments? Uh recommend a motion that the board of education approved the consent agenda items 1 through eight as presented. >> I'll make a motion. I'll second.
>> Any discussion? All those in favor? I opposed. Motion carries. I'd like to introduce Crystal. I'm UBCA. Welcome. Okay. Um, so as my update, I was really just going to be echoing um a big thanks to our PTSAs. Um, it was they pretty much said it all. you know, as just as we are here on the board, you know, it's we're all volunteers and the the show that was put on on Sunday was no easy feat and I know they've been working on it for months in advance and there were so many components of it and it truly was a really fun day. The community came out and it was it was a lot of fun. I mean, at at halftime when they did the halftime and they were, you know, the Wizards were selling
their um souvenirs and they had the kids to line up to be able to buy their gold basketball. That line stretched from one end of the gym all the way and it took and it was just they were so excited to get a gold basketball. [laughter] Um so it was and they were just having a great time. So, you know, kudos to you. it is, you know, um there's a lot of work that goes into it. So, thank you for all you do for our students because that money, as you said, goes right back to the PTSA, which goes back to our students. So, thank you so much. >> Court time, Mr. Malik. >> Okay, I'll start off uh talk about the policy committee. Due to an ever changing landscape uh with regards to federal
and state laws and policies, the district has decided to partner with the New York State School Boards Association to conduct a compliance review of our board policy manual. Our last review was over 10 years ago. This review will take a couple months to be completed and will allow the district policy team to be more efficient in aligning policies with current regulations, standardizing procedures, and reducing time spent on the manual policy document. During this review process, New York State School Board Association will help us identify the followup any legally required policies the board has not adopted yet. Notation of any significantly outdated board policies. A list of any NISBA recommended policies the board does not have in place. A notation of any policies that could be rescended if they are deemed non-essential. With that being said,
during our board policy committee meetings, the committee will be reviewing policies that directly affect the board of education members. These policies are as follows. Policy uh will be discussing uh regarding executive sessions. Policy 21000 will be discussing discussing board of education authority. Policy 2510 will be orienting and training new board members. We'll be reviewing that information. And policy uh will be reviewing school board member ethics. If there any other committee members who would like to say anything at this time. >> I think I think you got it. [laughter] >> Our next policy meeting will be on Monday, February 2nd at 4 PM right here. I think most uh everyone is welcome to >> Great. I don't have a ton of updates. I also wizard Chicago basketball you allract about to go on a learning walk
on Monday which was awesome. It was my first time at the school and it was just it was very peaceful. Just a very peaceful energy. One of the highlights was the sensory room. I was in a classroom with a student who had this little squishy and he was telling me how he could go to the sensory room because they had all these tools that they could borrow to use while they were learning. Saw lots of great small groupoup instruction and some really interactive teaching happening. So that was great. Um but we also had the curriculum committee meeting there. So I'll share some updates but jump in. We heard about um we heard an ENL department update and our ENL students are doing really well in terms of their testing the NISWAT testing and progressing and
eventually you know um placing out of that program. We also had an update on the guidance plan and the SEAL curriculum adoption process that is there's a committee right now that is reviewing different curriculums to adopt for the upcoming school year. Um also heard more about the current curriculums and how those are going in upcoming fastbridge testing and how that may impact AIS for students and we just also looked at course proposals and textbook adoptions. That's it. Oh, um I did not go to Wizards game because I waited till the last minute if I sold out. So, I got to see some of it through Snapchat. Um attended the uh Dimy and I attended the districtwide safety committee meeting yesterday. Um which was the first one I had attended. um pretty impressive full room of
people um discussing you know safety measures that we take safety measures that we need to take um the goods the bads of what's going on in the district so it was very uh informative very eye opening of what was going on um some of the updates um I know I spoke last month regarding the on the facilities committee about some of the upgrades for our capital project but just to touch a little more uh the wind the window film which is being installed on some of the schools is almost done in the high school. Uh 3/4 of it's done in the middle school. Um Khanskin was starting yesterday and Marble Town, excuse me, Marble Town is starting soon. So, >> okay. I missed yesterday's walkthrough, but I did go to the walkthrough um at the
high school before the holiday and I have to say our two board members from the high school were quite an asset. We really enjoyed doing the walkthrough with you. They filled us in on a lot. Um all good. Um we have a budget committee meeting tomorrow at 4 and I guess we'll try. Yes. Are you supposed to? You got me involved in the Well, we're meeting Thursday at [clears throat] 3 p.m. >> Shame. Sorry. >> Yes. My house is so shame. [laughter] >> All right. So, we have the facilities committee last week. Um, we are wrapping up the 2019 capital project. There's only a few remaining items. So, we will have that all done and wrapped up and submitted to the state very shortly. Um, so it's moving along very well. Uh, to the 2025
capital project is uh starting and uh we'll be seeing some of those items happening very soon. Next meeting is next all welcome to attend. >> So equity council uh the last equity council meeting uh we had was in December. Uh Meg Braron facilitated uh we also had in attendance Dr. Spado um Dimidy fellow board member uh Alex Dannon uh the high school principal and assistant principles the intermediate school principal and Marggo Sanchez a parent. Um we spent most of the meeting looking at uh the disagregated data from the climate survey. Um and I can't emphasize enough um how much information we do have. There was a we went through a lot of data. Um all of which I think gives us some direction um as to where we want to dig deeper. Um some of
the things that sort of came up in our conversation. Uh we wondered if some of the data may have been skewed a bit um when students uh preferred not to share their for an example not share their racial or ethnic identity. Um uh so so that's something we want to sort of look into. Um and and just as an example, 21% of the fourth to sixth grade response respondents answered prefer not to respond. Um, so we just need to think about um what we want to do about that data and if we want to take that percentage out or what have you. Um, okay. Uh, other few things that we noticed. Um, approximately 25 to 30% of our student population does not identify as white. Um, so that that is that that is uh certainly
the sort of really healthy percentage. um and sort of was was checked. So this is based on the survey but also um in terms of the population um the sense of belonging was generally lower in students from historically or underrepresented groups. Um and then the one sort of exception there um was at the high school. Uh the students sense of belonging tended to be a bit higher regardless of gender identity um or LGBTQ plus status that sort of thing. The sense of belonging was actually quite high. Um, students from historically marginalized groups agree that bullying and teasing is prevalent at Rondout. Um, but uh, students uh, from historically marginalized or under reppresented groups and students who identify as white believe students are being teased or bullied because of their race and eth and ethnicity. U,
the results show at this point that both groups agree or strongly agree. Um, and the percentage uh, climbs higher as a student gets older. So, just the interesting piece about this um is that is that we're we're noticing that even students who um identify as white, for example, are sort of noticing um bullying based on race and ethnicity. Um a few things that sort of as a group we wondered about. Um do we need a newcomers uplifted program for the junior high school? This is a a program we do have and and I think have had for quite a long time at the high school, but is that something that could be helpful to question? Um, are there accessibility factors in sports representation? Um, can students be in a club and a sport at the
same time? Um, in terms of idea catchers, things we wanted to understand more about. Um, and I know I think this is something that the high school principal and assistant principal said they have thought about, but should there be a later start time for high school? I mean, that was something that came up um, pretty often um, in the high school surveys um, from students. Um, and it's something maybe to to to look at uh in terms of possibilities. Um, could affinity spaces be helpful? Um, and is there or could there be a walkthrough tool um for driving instructional decisions? Um, moving forward, uh, we are forming a subcommittee to look at holding an event specifically to hear from parents and other Rondok community members about some of the issues we've identified from the survey.
Um I think the idea is to provide avenues for people to share their feedback and or experience as it relates to a sense of belonging at Rondo. Um the climate survey is a powerful tool but we recognize people may feel comfortable sharing in different ways. Um and perhaps a conversation makes more sense for some. Uh we also talked about uh whether it would make sense to have a parent liaison. Um, so someone who is not a board member or an employee at the school, um, that community members specifically, you know, I think parents, um, could go to to ask questions, to share their experiences, that sort of thing, just as sort of another venue, another way, um, to share to ask questions. Um, so moving on from equity council, um, work with NYU has begun.
Um, so, um, Dr. Brown of the CRSE program has been working on portrait of a graduate um at the high school. Um I believe he's pushing into middle school um in February and the elementary schools in May. Um also there's an internal um CRSE group so kind of the train the trainers folks um and they are looking for ways to create space for conversations with faculty um and and different ways. And I think one idea that's sort of come up is a is a book study group. So which which I think sounds great. And that's all I have. Meg, did you have anything that you wanted to mention that maybe I missed sharing that came up at equity council or anything like that? [clears throat] >> Um, so the first thing I wanted to speak
on was uh the elective fair that Madison and I spoke about at the last board meeting. Um, took place at towards the end of December. Um, for my personal experience, I think it went really well. Um it was nice to see how hard all the other students are working in their electives, the projects, the things they've done and what they really did to show off what they do in that class. Um the other things I wanted to share was that there will be a staff developmental meeting on February 4th for with all the staff within all the school districts to uh inform the teachers what the portrait of a graduate really is. And then after that staff developmental meeting happens, Madison and I, the student congress and sea members will go around to all the
students and classrooms and really inform them what portrait of a graduate really means. >> Um, Sunday was a game spoke with that a little bit. I volunteered. It was really fun overall. I hear some great things from other students who were there and teachers were talking about it. So that was really well. Thank you guys. And um, next week we have regions in two weeks. We have regions and midterms next week. >> Thank you. Really just want to thank Miss Green, Miss Colmer as well. Um I unfortunately couldn't make it. I had my own team's practice at that time, but beer came home with that that ball and she was so proud of it. She had signatures on it and everything. So, um I recognize the massive effort that all of you put in to
it and and the rest of the PTA. So, thank you. I think that bringing that community together is what we're all about at Rondo and appreciate you all kind of carrying that forward. So, thank you. Um, the only thing I wanted to add to policy, Jim, you you had it all covered, but then I started to think what community might be thinking about us doing this comprehensive review and having NISA help us. Um I did just want to note that in our discussion with the consultant from NISPA um she was very um complimentary of our current policy manual and when she talked about us compared to other districts um ours is in pretty good shape. I mean there's some that are outdated but that's pretty typical. Um and I think we need to give some
credit to Deb and also Miss Pack um who was here and you know retired recently in addition to our former chairs Dr. Roberts and and many others who really have been tirelessly looking at policy. Um it is a tough committee to be on. I'll be quite honest, you know, going through all of that text and everything. But I, you know, kudos to those people who have kept our policies up to date. So >> yes, and good luck to our high school students next week for Regency and thank you so much. wrap it up with you. >> Yeah, I'll be I'll be great. Um, if you want to talk later start time, I've got lots of information on that. I am 10 years ago. We tried to get a big push for that, but have lots
of research. Um, I wasn't able to attend the curriculum committee meeting last week, but our next meeting, Miss Harve, April 16th, so February, February, February, >> February 5th. Glad we checked in. February 5th at 5 o'clock at the district office. If you want to join us, please do. It's a public meeting. And yes, thank you. I was unable. I was in the same boat as Paul. Um we didn't get our tickets if my daughter didn't get get herself in. So she got a ticket. So thank you. Was a wonderful event. I want to say uh we are partnering with uh local local farmers in the community farm to table initiative. Um we are actually having our our first tasting taking place at the high school. Um we're partnering with a um place called Crop Shop
and Mstone Millstone Mills. Uh bringing in healthy options um to our students. The great thing is it's it's local and uh shout out to Diminy and and Carrie for connecting uh these uh crop shopping Muslim meals with us so you know so we can bring healthier options to our students and it's also within our community >> and the first tasting I hear is tortilla chips >> and they're really really good. >> It's coming up next week. Recommended motion that the board of education approve consent agenda items four and five as presented. >> I'll make the motion second. >> Any discussion? All those in favor? >> I opposed. Motion carries. Recommended motion to move into executive session to discuss the employment history of particular individuals as presented. No board action will take place after executive session.
>> Any discussion? All those in favor? >> It'll take a few minutes to have a great night everybody.
