if we could all please um i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all can i have a motion to approve the agenda for um we're recording so um can i have a motion to approve the revised november 9 2021 meeting agenda as presented second any discussion all those in favor okay any opposed motion carries dr morgan all right thank you don um first item on the agenda is our athletic department with our student recognition mr panic you're up thank you everybody i want to thank you guys for giving us a few minutes tonight to recognize the kids we'll start with uh we i first thing i did when i got here was

i looked around and tried to find a pizza shop that i could get an athlete of the month out of then i went down and i saw benny's and i said this is the place so i became good friends with benny real quick and uh then he's like he goes jeffy you can give the kids a large pizza and just do all the paperwork and we'll take it he goes so he did a great job so i want to thank him for that and uh so in september our first three benny's athletes of the month were uh let's see we'll start with [Applause] soccer goalie uh olivia bennelli who's not here because the field hockey team is resting up they got a busy week so i told olivia you come next time we'll recognize her

with the whole team and then uh our other person for september was abigail corzapa why [Applause] just to say he is a pillar of our team he's a leader and a few shout outs this year very proud of him looking forward to next year [Applause] she clearly was nominated for benny's athlete of the month because in the first i think two meets she had qualified for sectionals and her times in four different events and within another week she was like all right i need a fifth one and got in on the backstroke so um and then competed at the ocias uh in the fly and the backstroke and third and fifth right and then at sectional she did 11th and 13th so congratulations to her and her family [Music] [Applause] yeah so over the last

eight months we played in 15 football games nick zaki's taken every single snap at center and almost every single snap at defensive end um been just a machine for us but the best part of nick is that when he shows up to practice he's got a smile on his face he's there to have fun and we have fun together and he's a voted captain uh as a junior by his teammates um and we're just real grateful to have him and we're real great we'll have him for a whole year [Applause] kayla was uh on our varsity girls soccer team and on her lap first [Applause] one of the last outings of the year the united stalls where the division two star golf team along with uh we've got dan and i'll get to that in

a second but anyways uh hunter shot in 82 and qualified for the uh he was fourth overall qualifying for spring sectionals along with dan and ethan so i'm glad you can fly so uh our golf team did win the division two mahals qualifying them to play and danny then eric hunter ryan andrews here tonight as well so uh these three guys all qualified for the spring sectionals ethan and dan both stuck in there with 90s at the end so congratulations to those guys as [Applause] up one well uh you got some end of the year good news uh marley coach marley was selected to the section nine class b soccer all-star team correct correct so marley staying up and that takes care of our pennies and our golf moving on across the country um we

had clara samko placed 20th in the mahals the top 21 are recognized so she gets invited to the banquet at mount academy so that's been practiced yeah and izzy cansella had a great run last week down at fairmount that is one tough course and she finished giving her a sectional patch and she'll be running saturday morning in the states of shenandoah at 10 am as well so we've got two teams yeah i think i think izzy is watching um from home okay and she had a great season she's won numerous uh meets overalls from the overall top girl at numerous dual meets she led us to a third place overall trophy of the saugerties invitational um she was sick at mahal so she had to sit out and then she came back for sections and

as you said she qualified for states in a super competitive plasty race yeah mr panic was there to see it it was a nail biter we were running her down the finish line she had four or five girls right on her tail yeah and just kept going yep and clara i think it was her fifth race of her life um to be an all-star pretty amazing um and i think izzy would have been you know top ten for sure but she was sick so that's it yes thank you thank you okay field hockey as we all know has had an amazing season and uh i'm gonna recognize all the kids i told coach sam said to me she feels we're tired i'm going to stay home tonight so they they're going home wrestling tonight tomorrow

night we're hosting the exceptional senior contest for field hockey here at six o'clock so our kids will be here but none of them can play in the game um tomorrow two o'clock sofia spoon maker signing to go to the university of albany on a scholarship so that'll be exciting um we'll send you guys the link if you'd like it and uh friday night we're hosting the football class c-sectionals here chester and o'neal so great opportunity for our stadium for our community and i want to take a minute and thank our community for supporting our kids as i said thank you to benny's for his pizza but i also received some phone calls i also received some phone calls this weekend after we won from the fire department from the police and state troopers about escorting

our kids and when you look at the big picture of a community support in the school i think that's it sums the bigger picture when everybody comes together and the other thing i want to recognize is this torah in uh homecoming what a great night that was for the kids with the food trucks and the tailgate party and all that for the kids so i know that i heard the kids over top and how great it was to have a crowd that big playing in front of them and all the rest so um we'll get the field hockey team here for another board meeting and recognize all those kids for all their accomplishments and i want to take a minute to thank my secretary dina de grote because she's the best and she had our

hotel rooms booked yesterday morning and i saw online this afternoon i got an email that some of the other schools didn't quite get into the hotel that we're staying at down in long island so thank you to dina for making sure we had it all taken care of right away so thank you very much i'll let you guys go on yeah congratulations [Applause] thank you [Music] okay the next item we have on the agenda uh let's see uh chris frenza is going to do a presentation on our smart school grant mr friends up sir all right everybody thank you very much for the opportunity to speak um we're going to be applying for a smart schools grant um smart smart bond initiative was passed by new york voters in 2014 and awarded two billion dollars

to new york schools ronald valley was awarded a total of two million dollars um the rules for the use of these funds um were for they were for classroom connectivity classroom technology uh community connection pre-k class improvements um elimination of temporary classrooms and school security and safety things that you can't do with the money pay salaries you can't buy software or provide professional development so these uh this is to work in collaboration with the strategic plan and the technology plan as well as um uh taking into consideration the building condition survey so we've taken the step of establishing a smart bond planning committee to review the proposal um phase one we've already done which was upgrading the network uh switch infrastructure replacing fiber optic cable and cat6 cable uh we've also expanded our wireless access

points um this project has been completed uh the next part will be high tech security and what we're planning what we're proposing to do is replace obsolete classroom communication system or phones with a voice over ip emergency classroom communication system and the bond that we're asking for is for 365 one thing about smart school money is it's considered evergreen which means that the money is consistently there it's there until we use it all so where we are right now in this is that um gonna do this presentation uh the board of vega uh board of education can accept this proposal as a preliminary plan and then once that happens the preliminary plan will stay on the school district website for 30 days with an email address for public comment and then later on uh if

the board of education approves we can then send approval the approved plan to nysa scd and then the plan sits for could be up to 12 months waiting for approval so what are we proposing we're proposing a cisco voice upgrade um and so this is just a little bit about what we're what we're hoping to do um the cisco plan that we're looking at is the calling plan um which is in the center there we're not going to get the meetings because we're using zoom for our meetings and the contact center we don't need because this is for much larger organizations that collect social uh credit card numbers and stuff like that we don't need that so we're going to be focused on just the calling aspect of this plan uh we're gonna be looking

at a three to five year plan uh build annually um uh these are the uh the servers that we're looking at which are the uh business edition 6000 servers which can use uh handle up to a thousand users and twenty five hundred devices um two of those one here and one at both seats one of the benefits of this plan is the um the uniting of our systems uh right now the elementary schools are on different systems and this system is going to unite everything into one um uh one uh system okay uh we'll have one site the other thing as i said before uh there'll be a backup site at boces um a backup server so something should happen on campus uh or the server at boces will be able to handle um our

calls so the features that we're getting the best feature of all is that we will be able to make calls answer calls and end calls so that's a good feature and then no uh the traditional things that we get out of a phone um uh we'll have voicemail features um voicemail greetings and answering but this is where this is what the real purpose of this is uh 9-1-1 um e-9-1-1 will allow us the ability to if someone should call 9-1-1 from a classroom it will tell the um the person uh the the operator that not just what building the 911 call is coming from it'll tell the exact classroom location um it will also give the 911 dispatcher the opportunity to call the number that was dialed call that number back um it will also

send out alerts via voice web and email to everybody who we get set up on the phone um on the system um and then it will also uh be able to track the ip phones by their mac addresses and ip addresses so this is the this is the real reason for this plan um to upgrade our phone system for these emergency situations when an e91 client client detects the user is off net the application will ask the user to enter current address and dispatchable location so it will also send out a message to the phones to allow for um transfer over from from powerpoint uh so this slide was supposed to show some of the important aspects of the uh of the program um such as uh um emergency calls uh panic buttons um oh

came back perfect um and so these things uh will allow for added safety and then another feature will be the connection of the phone to the pa system uh so principals will be able to make announcements over the over the phones using their phone instead of having to go to a separate location to access the um access the pa system they'll be able to make that call from any place in the building using their code um along here single wire again monitors 911 wall call occurrences it notifies all staff that a calls occurred um and it relays information about who placed the call where it was placed um and the time it records the call as well these are all uh security measures built into the system this will this allows the single wire and

former cast mobile allows allows for uh inter um interaction between the uh system and cell phones to allow for uh mobile access to what is going on um in the buildings and what the alerts are and what and also allows for the school to send out mobile alerts um to its teachers or members uh we've decided not to use the webex the webex meetings again because we're using zoom these are the phones that we're looking at the 885 ones and the 8861 cisco phones are going to be the office phones um along with those the for some of these phones will be uh additional sidecar uh phones which um attachments to the phones which will allow for added function functionality uh the 7841 phones will be the classroom phones um and these will be uh

obviously every classroom these are for the these are the phones and these are the conference hall phones so that's the plan um we're going to from here it'll get posted on the school website and then sit for 30 days waiting for a public comment after 30 days then the board will come back and vote correct on it okay correct any quest brian uh do you know is there a an override system involving the 9-1-1 like for example what if a student called 9-1-1 from the phone on the stage is the office alerted whenever there's a 9-1-1 call that's being placed from the building so they're aware that a 9-1-1 calls the place yes yes not only will building admins but district admins will all be alerted as to what phone made the call where that

phone was what time that phone call was made and those and that will be done uh virtually instantly and then for the um getting onto the phone to make an announcement over the pa is that a code that's distinct every phone or is that just the code that you can use in any phone so for example it's distinct for the person okay so a student can't just get onto a phone anywhere and hit the close that everybody uses okay um why thank you for the presentation um why did you guys choose this as an investment other um and other things that might have been considered uh the phone system in the uh district office in this part of the district is about 11 years old the servers are 11 years old um and are in

need of replacement but the real issue is the elementary schools they are not connected to our system they're on their own system and this would unify the entire system together is it a mandate i think it's i think it's something that is coming or it's coming it's being recommended um and then uh updating our system to uh all cisco equipment um we'll go along with what our wireless access points are our switches and our servers are as well so everything will be on the same uh same network equipment it's this reduces our bills i'm not quite sure if we have the number on that but we're not paying phone bills anymore everything's ip and also i mean it's it's long overdue i mean i would probably would say that 90 of the school districts and

businesses have i people now boys yes i just have one follow-up we're very concerned about the elementary schools okay and so this was a high priority okay thank you carolyn under for the safety and security we actually um in the district that i work with we went to the system and it's been very nice um one of the features we have i'm curious if you're doing it in the different buildings it's sort of like just for the greeter's desk for lack of a better word i don't know what we use in different buildings their phone is actually outside of the building it's almost like a ring like they have a little camera that's connected to the phone and the person talks to them like what's your business here but it's only on it's not all

the phones it's just like one in the main office at the greeter's desk i don't know if that's a feature they don't enter the building it's sort of like they have to be buzzed in but it's it's an added security that's basically through a camera of you know what's your business here and that's something that we can definitely talk to our agent about and see because it's not all like the camera phones you know so i don't know it's just yeah we're not certain phones have more capabilities we're not getting the camera but they are available so that's something that we can definitely look at okay any other questions okay well thank you very much for your hard work and your presentation this is wonderful thank you very much thanks chris thank you hey thank

you um the next item on the attendant um we have a nicole capital b and steven produs uh with us tonight to discuss uh the uh restorative practices update perspective hi everybody thank you very much for accounting myself and uh this captain here um so again i'm stephen protis um and we have our director of diversity equity and inclusion here with me this evening to present on restorative practices um it's gonna be just kind of a general overview and sort of where we're at as a district in regard to our starting practices this season so i wanted to start with some of the principles and sort of explain that to everyone restorative practices really helps to build a strong community and a strong community can help contribute to a much safer school and a more

inviting school climate it provides opportunities for students staff members and all involved to reflect on what's happened it offers an opportunity to repair harm when harm is done and repair relationships when relationships uh have gone through some troubling situations it really separates the deed from the doer and what that means is rather than identifying a person as a bad person or a good person we identify the action as an acceptable action or an unacceptable action and really focus on that rather than focus on identifying the person as being good or bad and it provides a really high level of accountability so when we look at traditional discipline the focus has always kind of been what role was broken who did it and how should they be punished and in restorative practices we asked about who

was harmed how they were harmed and what needs to happen to repair the heart a lot of the work that we've been doing is coming from the international institute of restorative practices and they've developed what's called the social discipline window it shows different types of discipline based on the amount of control and the amount of support involved when there's very little control and there's very little support we're we're essentially being neglectful right we're not addressing what needs to be addressed when our control is high but our support is low discipline is something that we're doing to the students and is punitive and in reverse when our support is high but our control is low it's very permissive and our goal in this district is to provide high levels of support along with high levels of

control we want to be restorative we want to be doing things with students an environment and style of discipline that holds our students accountable to high expectations while providing them the support they need to achieve it that's really what restorative practices is as we understand it so here's a look at the timeline of restorative practices at rondout valley prior to 2018 a need to address disproportionality was identified by new york state in 2018 building level teams worked to establish core groups and share knowledge building life in 2019 there was initial training of faculty and staff administrative representatives from all buildings in 2020 restorative practices are used in some classrooms and offices and select staff in each building have been trained as trainers and in 2021 most faculty have received introductory training on restorative practices and

the practices continue to be used and supported in classrooms and offices so a lot of people sort of wonder what this might look like in practice so this is a scenario it's it's fictional but loosely based on reality um the type and level of consequence is very situational right it's determined based on a number of factors the nature of the incident uh whether it's repeated the discipline history whether or not a student has a disability the level of harm that occurred the number of students impacted or staffed the extent to which the student is willing to repair the harm and many other factors for the purpose of painting a picture this fictitious situation is uh based on real events again so for example a student has been found to have been bullying another student for

the last three weeks maybe two of those instances were verbal one was physical the students the student who's been bullying is given an in-school suspension for two days to ensure that there's time for the student to reflect on their behavior and for school staff to reschedule a re-entry conference and create a plan of action the person harmed and the person doing the harm are asked the restorative questions and among the board members here i put the question cards at your seat so you can see what i'm speaking about there those questions are asked separately the student harmed does not have to participate in a formal conference but if they choose to do so and in this figurations case they do um then generally both parties have to be on the same page in order for

staff to bring them together safety for the person who has been harmed the victim or person harmed always have a choice as far as whether or how they would like to be involved in a restorative practice especially a bullying situation both students and supporters of their choice participate in a formal conference the students both choose a parent or guardian to participate parental involvement and staff involvement is generally greater than restorative practices especially when a situation hasn't resolved itself the first time from this a written agreement is made as a result outlining what has come of the meeting and what needs to happen moving forward both students are followed up with privately multiple times following the incident to ensure that the bullying has not continued if the bullying continues then consequences will be progressive as will

programs so um we want to make sure that we are doing what works to change student behavior to ensure that we have a positive school climate that they belong and for students have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and so really the goal here is to have as many tools available in our toolbox we do not want to reduce suspensions at the expense of safety and i think that's really important to emphasize and so connected to that we wanted to address a couple common misconceptions about restorative practices especially as it relates to student discipline and one of those myths that is i would say fairly pervasive is an idea that restorative discipline is soft there are no consequences students get away with problematic behavior they just say oh sorry and you know nothing happens

but in fact um you know as mr potus articulated high expectations and accountability are really central to restorative practices students are held responsible for their behavior and expected to repair any harm their behavior may have paused and these are very in-depth and lengthy processes they uh bring out a lot of emotion they're tied to like he said they're from their family and supporters and the impact is significant on student behavior myth number two restorative practices is a replacement for traditional disciplinary consequences um and that's a myth because often restorative practices and traditional disciplinary consequences go hand in hand there may still be times when removing a student from the classroom or school grounds is warranted to keep the student in question the classroom and or the school community safe um and and in more minor

situations um conflicts between friends or various situations that do not rise to the level of a traditional disciplinary consequence where certain practices can be used as the soul response if it's uh deemed to be effective um restorative practices takes too much time and this is i would say only a myth because um it does take time it takes time up front because it is relational it often involves a large community of stakeholders and sometimes that takes a lot of time to coordinate and plan for and to ensure that students and parents and whoever else participates are adequately prepared to engage effectively in those process so it does take time but in the long run we believe that time is saved because the underlying needs and the lagging skills are addressed instead of kind of being

pushed down the road and the fourth myth we wanted to address is that restorative discipline is just a job for deans or aps or those who are you know primarily deal with disciplinary issues and we really believe that for restorative practices to be successful it needs to be owned by everyone in the community not just a select group the aim of restorative practices is to change the school climate and the way we interact with one another it's not simply a response to student behavior so while we're focusing our presentation today on how we use restorative practices in runoff valley in relation to student behavior there is a host of other practices that teachers use in the classroom such as circles to build community to build empathy and some of those really important social skills that

help to prevent misbehavior and also help to give students the tools they need once something does happen so what does the research say there is a lot of research on student behavior specifically there's research that shows that being suspended from school is predictive of a host of negative outcomes um including decreased academic achievement higher likelihood of involvement with the juvenile justice system um policies like zero tolerance policies have shown to have little benefit in terms of improved school climate and in fact the federal government has issued guidance recommending restorative practices and recommending decreased reliance on zero tolerance policy so the department of education department of justice have all you know recommended restorative practices this is not a fringe or you know um experimental practice that said the research on restorative practices in public school settings

is early and so you know you can find studies online you know in various directions but there are a lot of examples of school districts that have done this work really well and really thoughtfully and have seen really amazing results in their data whether it's discipline data as well as other outcome data so what are our next steps we have a significant number of staff who have been trained in a facilitating restorative circles in their classroom um as well as representatives at each school who've been trained as trainers and then most recently uh we have had staff had an initial training but we do believe that there is much more training to be done this is a process that um is not uh is not a short training to ensure uh really effective um and

thoughtful implementation so we want to continue to train staff we want to make that training available to the community and to our parents as well so they can better understand restorative practices and also be able to utilize some of the same philosophy and principles in their own homes if they choose to or would you know within their own family if that's something that they choose to do one of the core components we believe that will help to ensure consistent and effective implementation is revising our code of conduct to ensure that restorative practices are clearly articulated throughout the process and as a part of that process we are going to be creating a subcommittee that will include staff administration parents and students and there will be multiple opportunities for feedback along the way so in addition

to those people who are selected to participate in that subcommittee a draft would be creative we would do a thought exchange you know from our entire community to get feedback on that draft and then once the code of conduct is revised we would make sure to offer opportunities for our community to familiarize themselves with the code of product and ensure that that everyone is on the same page we also want to ensure that there are procedural safeguards in place to ensure that our students of color and students with disabilities are not more likely to experience disciplinary traditional disciplinary consequences for example we will also be creating a district-wide school climate survey this year we have had a district like school climate survey in the past but we're going to be asking additional questions that better

understand our students experience of safety at school and be able to really disaggregate that data so we have some students here to share their experience and we also uh we weren't able to have a parent come to this meeting but we brought in a parent voice um through a recent experience here that we wanted to share so i can just read that quote this is a parent of a junior high school student who said my child said she felt more hurt and more supportive than before she liked the way it was resolved as opposed to both kids being punished and not listened to what she thought was going to happen if you're punished and you don't work to resolve it it just kicks out so now uh we'll have ms tarp who will introduce our

students so good evening everyone and today we have two of our student athletes johnny soy and connors lindsey who's just gonna report out from their experiences um from an incident that occurred last april during the fall to season um that went pretty viral and did affect a lot of people not only in the school but also in the larger community um so i'm just gonna ask them some kind of like probing questions to kind of get some like of the process so from your guys's experience if you can just kind of explain the context of what the situation was of course without disclosing the individual um so i woke up one morning very early and there's a notification on my phone that uh a student and a kid on our team uh sent a message

to a group chat that included uh current players parent coaches former players and alumni uh and it was very negative racial slur and um i saw it and i knew that that student was gonna be in a world of trouble and there's to be a very bad ramifications um from the slur and i was very concerned um about how i was going to look for a program and for uh and for that student and yeah same with me i woke up that morning on my phone and i was like like um and i didn't think that a student would like say this like i knew something had to be like done like um i knew it didn't look very good enough and um talking about it definitely helped um figure out her problems and like

restored my friendship so during that experience there's about 30 of us on that took part in a circle that stood at the end that that child's parent just kind of would explain some of their experiences being part of that and there was a picture of the room so being part of that experience what was that like for you guys being part of that um going into that meeting i was very nervous because there had been like because of how you know big and big the uh the incident was there's a lot of rumors about what happened uh there's you know like our team was confused because like connor said we didn't expect this this kid to be someone who would say something like that and uh um getting to hear from him and uh you

know with everyone on like many players on our team there helped cleared up a little bit and uh kind of resolved you know what we were feeling and figure out what what really happened so it wasn't just negative rumors going around and then like not hear from the student so it's kind of just not sure what really happened and it's just a negative situation all around yeah i can't put it but i can't put it much better than we did um a lot of students had asked asked uh questions to that student and he was able to answer and explain what happened my thoughts in your experience in the past and you know typically how would a situation like this would have been handled um i don't think like i remember initially thinking i'm not

going to hear from this kid again uh like i thought i was just going to be suspended like that and that was going to be it and there's going to be no real conclusion what really happened i'm glad you're able to have this meeting so there was a there was a conclusion and lastly you know what was like one key takeaway or what was you know the one thing that you appreciated the most out of this definitely just talking about it and then asking questions there's always more than just like there's a lot of stuff i need to on the surface of what happened and i don't think it would have gotten into underneath that surface that but we didn't have that meeting thank you thank you [Applause] so we're happy to answer any questions

i have a couple questions around thank you for the presentation by the way it was wonderful are they elementary students being exposed to elements of restorative practices yes sir absolutely yep in each building and will this presentation be available for parents to see like on the website or yeah i mean yeah you'll have this live recording event available to everybody and then you can make this presentation as well thank you i'm nicole and chris so we have we have our work to do too for the um to align it with the code of conduct right so um that's a big piece right to making this yes definitely we started the work a couple of years ago but we need to finish it because the work that was done was we incorporated restorative practices in the

preamble of it the introduction the introductory really hasn't gone on those meetings we tried to get as much done as we could but it's not finished and the intent was to pick up the following year and it never was picked up so you and brian are actually on that yeah yeah i think we need to um talk more about how that's going to align with what you guys are already doing and so that we we can support you because right now it's a little hard right because it's kind of murky our code of chronic doesn't align with the story practices so it doesn't and i actually wrote it down because when i heard um nicole talking about you know they have a committee and a group and they're going to do a thought exchange and

go to conduct and like we need to be part of that and so i think it would be great to work in conjunction so it's just it's that much easier for it to come to the board and be approved and that's not just the board so it would be we have community members and a student an administration and um wait is he here he's not a director always on here tonight so lee was our administrator when we did it a few years ago so it would be a whole committee and we would work together to kind of support the program that you guys are already experiencing so i think that's a a big piece of what you're missing and just to be clear the committee hasn't been started and it would absolutely include board representation

that was the committee i was speaking of oh great oh i don't know what committee on the subcommittee of the policy committee that will be revising the code of conduct right we haven't met yet right right right right so i thought that nicole had this great committee going i was like we we weren't part of it so she's waiting for us so we're all gonna be one i'm like wait for us yes yeah it's gonna be one big happy family yeah thank you and thanks for getting all those people together emily um i was just wondering if you're just going to continue like there would be a semi-formal introduction such an important one we can't hear anything and chris i'm so sorry i passed by you i'll grab you right after touched upon the exact

same thing i was gonna have okay yeah i was just wondering if there was going to be a semi-formal introduction to the student body about like programs like this especially this one where we're just going to slowly implement it into our everyday school life just to keep like the general student body that isn't necessarily always involved in this informed just so we know that there is restorative practices in the way that it's kind of operating is not an entire systemship and it's not something that's brand new to the school completely i think maybe giving it the title and being explicit with it is news and what i mean by that is doing these explicit practices using the restorative questions uh having formal conferences having services but there are parts of restorative practices that we've been

doing in the district for years and years and years so i agree i think it's really important that students are made aware that this is sort of where we're shifting and new things that are coming along but i also think it's important to know that this is not something that's entirely new to us it's something that we've been doing here we're just giving it a really explicit framework and structure so that we can do it really effectively thank you chris you're good okay um nicole so to her point ten students initiate like or come to you for example there's been an incident i know that these practices are in place can we try it my door is always open and i'm always so a student can initiate like restorative practices every circle of communication is

appropriate yeah and like i was saying earlier it it's very dependent on the situation right so if there's a student who's been harmed and they're not the ones to initiate it it's really a lot of times heavily dependent on the student who's been harmed willing to participate in a formal conference or wherever we go with that so yes it can be certainly stupid you're thinking that maybe a student might be more willing to admit or come to you if they knew the other student was not going to be suspended or punished but maybe just to have that conversation to work things out they may be more willing they knew that was the path rather than a punitive yep and i think we're on our way there thank you and i would have ultimately we'd like

to have students that are trained to help facilitate especially when you know traditional discipline isn't warranted or needed in addition to be able to you know facilitate restorative conversations and mediations with their peers so that students can see other students really um you know showing their skills and that gets ideally right eventually we want the kids be able to implement this on their own when they're struggling know they have these skills so they don't need the ability to intervene eventually but i think it's to report what she was saying um as far along right that kids involving more kids and kind of saying is it exclusively saying we have this program in place and maybe they don't know it might be really beneficial and we have we do have a substantial group of trainers so

i i really love to share what i know i've offered if the board is interested i can train the board i'd love to train students i'll train anybody who's willing to come i think it's great thank you any other questions so we want to thank you um for a great presentation and the hard work that you all put into restorative practices and really helping our students uh faculty heal um after a situation has happened i think that's really very important so thank you very much thank you very much for having us thanks and we are excited about the code of conduct being updated it's going today yeah it's going to be updated this year thank you very much thank you next item on the agenda uh a supplemental memorandum of agreement with the rbf for

a professional unit uh recommended motion the board of education approve the moa uh between the board of education and foreign school district and the professional union of the rhondella family uh federation of teachers here in uh i'll make the most also any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries yeah smoa ryan dot valley administrator and professional unit and the board of education as presented any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries uh medical 913 evaluation uh recommended motion as presented only promotion i'll second any discussion all those in favor all right any opposed motion carries okay thank you thank you dr morgan so internal claims audit report recommended motion that the board of education approved the internal claims audit report for warrant number seven number eight number nine and number ten

as presented i'll make the motion a second any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries first reading of policy 1222 relationship with booster organizations any feedback for the policy committee i just wanted to mention as chair of the policy committee what we tried to do here is we tried to flesh out what our policy is now by looking at the nispa sample so that this is representative thank you policy chair excellent any feedback so next meeting we can move to second read and approval awesome first reading policy 1500 community use of school facilities oh we're just going to motion it oh no it's just a discussion sorry yeah apparently i get very confused so it's the first meeting yeah just tell me what's going on i have a question brian do you have

any feedback for it again we're just updating it especially with the turf field and okay was there a lot of difference is it there about anything major difference was there a major difference in the last one um basically what we're looking at here is including the language about the turf track facility their rental fees that's basically what it was sorry any um any other questions or feedback so we can move to a second read and approval adoption next meeting awesome thank you recommended motion that the board of education accept the minutes of the october 12 2021 as presented any discussion all those in favor any opposed motion carries okay board time and committee reports let's start with we've listed um building administrators in union update if you guys have any we've listed student board member

update and then we have strategic plan committee update separate so board time um carolyn do you have any updates um well coach panicked of all my updates but that's okay i hear he's like that um so congratulations once again to our athletes of the month um congratulations to our field hockey team who were regional winners this past week and we're headed to the state tournament this weekend um i was fortunate enough to be here this weekend watching this um you know double overtime zero to zero i i was having a heart attack and i have no child on the team so i cannot imagine any parent that had a child on that team because chris my heart wasn't beating so um congratulations to them and good luck to them this weekend our winter sports begin

on monday for varsity and jv sports and the following monday for modified so students um and parents if you're going to participate in a winter sport make sure you're signed up on that family id okay go online and do that but good luck to all our athletes in this upcoming winter season um if anybody is on campus on at any of these games whether it be soccer field hockey football um you'll start noticing i'm noticing there are a lot more people coming to these games and a lot more fans and it's pretty awesome to see so you know a lot of things are happening um coach panic has started the varsity club you know and is really working through that so i do want to thank him and um his sidekick you know deanna degrowed

his secretary there they really are they're they're they're bringing it in and uh it's really awesome to see so congratulations to everybody and thank you thank you do you know i have a question do you know if the um field hockey game i know it's on long island but do you know if it's going to be streamed it should be uh oh good okay codependency okay cool thank you i'll ask leader how we get the path we'll find out i'm not really like you know this streamer from the game so i need a little info on that okay awesome brian yeah i just wanted to kind of piggyback on what you said about um i was really impressed with homecoming and the sense of community i mean it was a wonderful evening so all the

people who are involved in that the students and the staff members and parents it was a great event and um i also wanted to say i'm very excited about the restorative practices um coming from someone that has actually been doing it in my profession i think i'm thrilled that we're moving in that direction and your presentation was wonderful i think it really explained things in very um easy to understand terms and it didn't have a lot of uh education lingo and i thought it was a great presentation and just to piggyback on what nicole had said we have a policy committee meeting next thursday the 18th i believe it was changed i didn't get to know you and uh we are looking at the process for how we're going to go about updating the code

of conduct and that process will be including um input from all members of our community all stakeholders i think the first thing we talked about was perhaps um having some sort of discussion with building administrators to get some immediate input from them about what works what doesn't what we need to really look at um so it's kind of like a step-by-step process but we will update the code account thank you and thanks for reminding me about the switch awesome thank you brian lucy we had facilities committee meeting on the october 20th and scott buffer presented talked about the phase one update there were some things with flags getting stamped with the jump sticks in the goal post the dugouts are supposed to be finished the next week the concession stand was approved by scd so

that was a big thing they wanted a list of items used for the educational foundation was to do fundraising like what items they need we talked about the end of the month they would be done with the punch out items at grahamson finalizing the contractors and phase two the abatement contract was in the closeout phase plumbing and electrical and during the punch list finishing up a few little things that for huntsman like when you find a wall back up phase three the budget was 25 million and the mid-opening date was november 5th they were they're gonna do it there's gonna be a walkthrough on the 19th of october 22 contractors attended um they're looking for people who can get all the stuff ahead of time you know because with the supply chain problems they in

and that was going to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks of all these contractors because the price whatever they quoted now is probably not going to be so that they're working on that um so the qualifications would be the week of number eight and they're going to be presenting at the november 23rd board of ed meeting and they hope to start that phase during spring break working nights april may and june and during the summer so awesome and we had um the district wide safety meeting i did sit on that last monday this past monday and it seemed like all the schools were pretty much updated on their drills and revamping their coming protocols grace that's good to hear yeah so everything looked pretty good good deanna i just wanted to update they gave

the contractors another week for um submitting their bids so they don't get anything this friday okay and then they're qualified next week so updates it's blessed the solution awesome thank you nicole um just a real quick shout out to uh mr cutler for his how first i think it was the first time they did at a halloween like parade with the kids um they used the stadium the field the kids were walking around parents came it was a beautiful day well organized and the kids loved it good it was a lot of fun it's cute it's fun to give a shout out to him he's not here his team there you go he's a great job the kids loved it i loved it it's great thank you um audit committee needs to schedule a meeting

and i are going to connect tomorrow to set that up um we have auditors ready to present to us before it comes to the full board um and then the budget will start in january that will start in january but you sent me the first question yeah so we have the correctness directive action plan that i brought up at our last meeting that's going to be on the next board agenda for us to just review and go over and then the budget committee meeting will be in january yep and then we'll start meeting more regularly for that great thank you chris i think skip over me dawn and i'll give my update when we perfect hello hello hi chris how are you good i was trying to do two things at once but i cannot

multitask so sorry lucy lucy mentioned most of the stuff that i was going to report we do have a facilities committee meeting next wednesday correct next wednesday night so uh hopefully we'll get some updates there and find out where we are other than that just again a big shout out to jessica and jeff for just doing some amazing work not only with homecoming but with recognizing the athletes and really putting a spotlight on on the work that's being done and as uh carolyn mentioned you know really really excited for the field hockey team and obviously for our our cross-country runners going to compete in states this weekend um that's a tremendous thing that we don't forget about or not i'm looking forward to hopefully them having some success this weekend and and being able to

escort them home with uh our local organization so that would be pretty cool we're looking forward to that no pressure but yes i mean they are doing awesome both all of us everyone's doing awesome great um emily you want to go we'll put you a little bit out of order sure um so basically the biggest thing that happened was the trip that dr morgan and i attempted to elementary school on october 28th with the second and third graders who go down at lunch to speak with them on their questions concerns general comments i just wanted to thank everyone for the opportunity and for everyone who organized that for me um it's really important for the on various things like usual stuff like playground stuff how much they like food friends playtime different activities but it's

also really nice to know what they're really looking at math science classes different things like rerouting the entryway apparently it's a big like commotion and it's confusing and they don't like it all and there are a lot of stones on the driveway they're like scraping up their knees a lot and he's like overcrowding the nurse's office that was one of their big concerns do we have a stone problem right yeah we need to sleep okay and those are really the things that is so cute in the airplane and the airplane we don't have an airplane well there is a bigger airplane and one that is not missing but this is like this is serious you know what i'm saying like i love that you went win i mean like really like if we're gonna have

the airplane we might as well have it all working oh that is so great and then we have another meeting um next on november 15th [Music] what's their favorite food did they say um general stuff like pizza the meatballs mozzarella sticks mac and cheese all the good stuff i heard the cooks in perhaps they do make a mean meatball yeah oh my god so we we like the playground we need some fixing up we have a stone issue on the parking lot okay we can fix that pretty easily but overall they're like in school they work except they're teachers i love their teachers more activities but i know there's probably a time constraint thing oh that's so awesome and did they love meeting someone from the high school oh yeah yeah yeah next time we're

gonna schedule more time for questions because that was like a big ending like you know you're like oh my gosh they're like high schoolers here oh my gosh i love it yeah and then just um some like other minor bullying things regarding students and especially classes with concerns i know we're like lacking on bus drivers to begin with but just i'm sure their principal is on that thing got it we have some restorative stuff happening i love it oh that was so awesome i'm so glad that you got to do that and we look forward to the marveltown report because i think um that would be exciting as well and isn't it like really adorable how small the chairs are like i just i love the elementary school like like it is just so great

going there so okay thank you very much emily i'm chris oh wait we'll do building yeah i'm going out of order look at me i get all confused and then and debbie put it like an order for me and i'm not even following it so um building principles is anyone here that would that would like to share a couple of things saying jeff has been doing a really great job connecting with other community members and our youth athletes as well and people who run our new program which is also great our youth football program lost a difficult game against liberty over the weekend but they played hard and amazing celebrating a shout out to them as well um we also had a halloween parade that was great we extended our route provided more surface area

for parents to spread out it was really well received um trunk or treat the same night was amazing it was a great event a huge turnout so really looking forward to being back in that um and we had a veteran's day celebration today and i'm looking forward to having a new basketball back in the building coming up and another visit from dr morgan and emily it was great so i'm going to put my plug in for mulch so the airplane has a soft landing we we too had a halloween parade it was wonderful uh thank my staff uh we had a nice long winding route through that field there and so everyone got to be spread out and it was nice and safe and a wonderful event uh that evening or pta did the trunk

or treat and we did it down at the municipal center the old roosevelt school and i want to thank the towns for letting us uh our pta use that space we also have the police supporting the fire department supporting we had 27 i think 27 parents decorated cars and they totally took it up a notch i think people must have spent the pandemic trying to figure it out um for november uh our theme is gratitude and so we're doing a lot around gratitude this this month and some of it's going to go into the veterans day assembly which we're having tomorrow uh we also have srp day we have a number of different events obviously thanksgiving it's all kind of tied to to gratitude and as we go through the months it's not uncommon that

elementary schools kind of have a theme each of each month and what we're trying to do is have those themes tied to what we used to call soft skills or you know social emotional skills that we like to call them success skills the type of skills you're gonna need to have to survive in a wonderful and be successful in an ever-changing environment and so gratitude's one of those and we purchased some books uh with the work of the library goddess marveltown um this thing she helped pick some books so we kind of have a little library and these different topics that we're developing and then a month each month a book that's going to be sort of a whole school book the teacher will have a copy and you can speak freely have a little

library my books just came in so i'm going to take them home feel really good about myself because i'm generally slow reader but these books i think they can blast through tomorrow we've got veterans day assembly i'm very excited about that um we reached out mrs champlin is the music teacher between marveltown and wisconsin and she reached out to our families looking for photos of family members who are veterans and she got a whole slew of them so we have a slide presentation that goes along with it the kids are going to sing some of our veterans including mrs protis are going to come visit us and and we're very excited about that and i think miss champlain has done a nice job getting that together i do need to send out a shout out

to buildings and grounds because in order to have the assembly we need to spread out far enough to follow the guidelines and the old folding door and that divides the gymnasium at marveltown the motor on it seized up and so it was closed and we couldn't get it open for three days but this morning they finally got it got it open so we're able to make the gym a full gym and we'll be able to have our assembly tomorrow those guys are down there early this morning working very hard to make that happen we did some virtual assemblies uh the energy guys is a virtual assembly that's the national children's theater we're working in conjunction with central hudson and they reach out to all the school districts and it's about energy conservation we have a

no place for hate uh committee uh comprised of second and third grade students and um this teach now and our accounts and ms waldron are leading that uh planning the events we've been doing the no place where hate events for the past several years um since dr morgan brought the idea to us and now we're just kind of raising it up a little bit and getting a lot more kids involved in that um and i think the other part that's kind of important is today we had a a training on a program called integrity it's a phonemic awareness program and it's something that what we do at the element lower elementary schools that's very important part of what we do is teach reading and so we're always looking for ways to make that happen a

little bit better so over the summer time marvel town and perhaps they got together and really this is jackie's brainchild uh she deserves a tremendous amount of credit for bringing this to it but it's going to be exciting it's the and one doing a community awareness program and i think it's going to help with those foundational skills to improve our reading scores our leading levels of achievement and uh lastly i want to say thanks to nicole and stephen for the presentation uh this is lovely and steve's been doing that he's kind of was an early adopter of restorative practices and so help in the marvel town uh kind of get that going a few years ago we still got to keep working on it thank you chris for your presentation as well and last but

not least homecoming was amazing it was just absolutely amazing it's so nice it was it was a great single and i really appreciate jeff uh jess everybody coaches uh that was a great great great night it was really proud of him thank you that was excellent thanks for updating us so far good evening everyone so then in the first kind of hard quarter believe it's actually gone by really fast um but i have to say that junior high has gone really well uh just being back to school with the staff at the students we've had a great start in the school year we have uh this past month um really have all of our after school programs up and running uh which we haven't had since pre-phobic so we now have our junior high kids

participating program we have our diversity club bioware company crafting club and after school tutoring is also you know being offered um as well as our modifying sports so thank you jeff who finally these activities are really great motivators for our students i've been looking at some of the data for the first quarter just an initial glance our attendance has improved um and i you know contributed a lot of that too having you know a lot of great activities for our kids and everyone's really happy to be back in school uh and also looking at our suspension data which thank you stephen for the great presentation our suspensions are very low so far this year and you know a lot of that is because we are using a lot of restorative practices and also because our

students are not engaging with behaviors that particularly warm uh suspension so um overall you know everything is uh going very well for junior high we had our spirit week uh two weeks ago uh the week of halloween so we did a wacky black wednesday a pajama day which everybody loves and then our kids got to wear their halloween costumes to school um and in the next few weeks we do have and we added to our calendar a couple of our classes are going to be healing some projects and presentations so we hope you'll be able to come and check those out two of our social studies classes um i observe some of the classes doing pretty cool things so definitely check that out if you're available and you're not and stephen curtis is a great

addition to our building we are very happy to have him and uh i what he is particularly proud of right now is student involvement so he's um we've worked to re-establish a ptsa with a really strong turnout and really strong representation of all stakeholders parents uh teachers and students um and that's just sort of the elections have just been finalized among the student body so he's like he's only done about that we also have a student council representation at the intermediate level so um i i think me is really and i'm really motivated by understanding the student body and having them represented and having them weigh in on important things that are happening in schools if that's critical you believe that's critical so it's just so great that we're back with students and these things

are happening and they're being represented and being part of what's really going um i think he would also want me to tell you that the gaga club is happening and it's like you know that's that's the need for him and it's a huge just seeing students for myself this is not lee but um seeing the students outside playing is just such a beautiful thing just to see them together and playing and doing something that's not a screen it's not viewing it it's not like they're isolated like we've all kind of felt in the last year and a half and um they're out there doing things and it's just such great things except um he's not mad at me for sharing i don't i don't even know what god is it's intense watch out apparently you

catch a ball and you throw it at somebody no no come on okay i learned it didn't take me long thank you very much and just a couple things from the high school so just to add to you know the homecoming and the food truck festival that was a huge success just some of the feedback from the food trucks they don't realize they're like a quite like a close-knit community they travel around you know at various events um every weekend and um they're even particular and a little competitive of where they're parked like one of them was like just yeah um so but they were just really impressed with just the turnout i think that says a lot about our community so i think we definitely created a lasting tradition there um we also have

our no place for gate event at the end of october and um the student participation in voice and their input is is is really growing um we're in our third year with no place for hate um really leaning on them and their focus you know emily's part of that um our focus this year is really kind of wrap around support for mental health awareness and really kind of what's going on behind the map um you know academic achievement is really what it's all about but if they're not well none of that matters so really just kind of leaning on them for some of those supports and um some conflict resolution communication skills that maybe got a little bit lost a little more tweaking um since uh you know those 18 months of the pandemic um

also i'm excited to share that we currently have 19 students who are participating in the suny ulster's uh president's counter challenge scholarship and today they all visited suny ulster they got to build relationships with their peers hear from key mentors and speakers and enjoy various activities and i know they all returned back today very excited about this amazing opportunity and in addition to our um exceptional athletes um are talented and a lot of hamilton musicians participating in competing at the state level and also being recognized at a national level that i'll be happy to share out at the next board meeting so thank you thank you mr mcdonough hi yeah i just have a couple quick things from the rvf uh as andy said november 16th is srp day and that's where we recognize the

secretaries and paraprofessionals and you've got the little gift back ask us to recognize them uh and then two things on a community service level in september we participated in a food can drive and we raised over a thousand cans of food around the whole district each building and we delivered it to the local food pantry and then a week or so ago on the weekend i don't know if you guys noticed the orange bags the one weekend along down the road because our adopt a highway program we cleaned up the highway here on route 209 a couple weeks ago and got that done uh we have to do it twice a year with our contract with osu county so that was our fall highway cleanup um and that's that's all i have for today thank

you awesome that's great um chris i think we're ready okay i'm joe do you have the slides it's great so um we spoke about a month ago um as a board that um well we're going to pass the strategic plan committee with doing the first pass the first draft of our mission vision um i have to be honest i didn't think we'd be ready to present at this point i actually thought it was going to be a december presentation but um we did a lot of work over the past three weeks to really push this through um primarily well a primary reason we need to get this out there we need to get it out there fairly quickly because a lot of what we're doing on the strategic plan committee depends or relies heavily on

the mission vision this is going to set the stage for everything that we're going to be doing with the building plans and and rolling out the larger strategic plan so um we want to come to the table with with uh what we put together um i have about five or six slides i'm going to try to go through them as quickly as possible i apologize that this this presentation is happening on the first meeting after daylight savings i know i know it's getting late and i told him she said we have a pack agenda already um so i apologize for keeping you all here late but like i said i do think this is important to um to try to get through sooner or later so the rest of the meeting is quick because it's

approval stuff so right very good um so just to touch base on who who we've been working with who is the committee um so obviously joe dr morgan is a is a critical component of this he's really been kind of guiding us um each step of the way but we've had uh participation from all of the building admins and from this capsule as well it's really been a cohesive group um and really we've had a lot of holistic points of view being brought to the table um brian and carolyn are also on this so you know with them bringing kind of their educational hats to the table i think we really had good representation um and then we have our consultant that i think all of your board members have met um nicole young alioto

she's been guiding us through each step of the wires um so you know if you can go to the next slide i want to just walk through very uh at a high level kind of what we've done up until this point um so it's really been a kind of a five step process um we did our needs assessment i wasn't on the board when that that was done but i think you all did it early 2020 um if i recall um and just so the community understands what what that needs assessment was it essentially was a survey of all the key stakeholders within the community so the students staff teachers and what we ended up getting out of that is um a lot of good data in terms of where we stand as a district

right what what are the the thoughts of of parts of the district as a whole from a perspective of communication collaboration academics um you know how how staff feel um you know the culture the divide within the building so really great data coming out of that survey um that we have used kind of as the groundwork to set the stage for what we're doing in our future plan committee um we took those data and as a board in may june last year just to remind the community um and we developed key priorities for the district um i think you all will remember one of those was around kind of the collaboration communication and the other one was around more the academic focus and it came up with the short-term uh mid-term and long-term uh priorities

and goals um for the the district uh as a whole and that's what the the the uh this committee is focusing on is really making sure that we're moving that forward and following up so that this doesn't become a backburner um uh task right we want this to be at the forefront and continue to march forward with achieving and in fairness we may not achieve everything we set out in those plans right but we want to make sure we're moving forward as best as we can to um to to meet those outcomes so i'm not going to go into any more detail on those first two i just wanted to touch base on it to give the community a sense of that's that's happened it's already set the stage i will touch in these slides

i'm going to touch on the last three so the thought exchange um about four weeks ago actually maybe it's a little bit longer than that only a couple of months at this point um joe had put out a thought exchange which is kind of a web-based platform and essentially put out to the community to get their their sense on what are the most important things when you think about student success um and voted to about 300 respondents i think yeah we had about actually we had close to 600 response and we had about um 800 thoughts and about 9 000 ratings of those so really great response beyonce gave us a lot of good data as a committee to build off of and begin to start thinking about what we want to go into our

mission and vision statement um following that following that exchange we met as a committee oh i think we lost your i lost my battery i'll go off the memory okay following that we went off of um those data used a lot of what we saw from the community responses and where they rated things as their highest priority in terms of where they think we should be going as a district and we developed the draft uh mission vision statement um we put that then out to the community again did another thought exchange ask the community which consisted of uh parents teachers again all the key stakeholders okay what do you think of this you could have statements and we got some feedback based on that as well um so we ended up are you gonna be

able to get it back or okay um i ended up tweaking the the mission vision statement slightly based on that feedback um and ultimately landed with what i'll show you tonight which is the last slide but there's some other data i want to show you before we get to that so you can get a sense of what the community feedback was you know you said you were surprised that we were going to bring this to the board already i just wanted to compliment you as the chair of the committee because there's a lot of educators on that committee for former educators and uh you keep us real focused and you make sure that we're looking at what we need to look at and i just wanted to say i think the reason why we're doing

this now is because of your leadership yeah thank you i agree thank you and i think the work that we're doing as a board is just great i mean we've got some including fabric policies we've got great facilities happening great budget like the athletics i mean i'm just so pleased with with the work that's happening um and the strategic plan is very important and i and you know as a board we'd like to thank the the principals um our administrators for being actively involved in this whole process because it's really i mean it's just going to change the world for our staff and our students it's very exciting so i just pulled up the presentation on my ipad and i think i'll just speak to this you do it joe gets um gets decided i

think we're having technical difficulties so when when we looked at the results from that student success um thought exchange um the results from the community feedback i looked at well as a committee we really focus in on kind of the five or six top results uh which ones were rated the highest and i'm just going to read them to you so the first one was critical thinking integrity compassion second one problem solving decision making communication skills the third one and i i paraphrased this a little bit it was like readiness skills um but there were things in there like balancing checkbooks and you know things that that these students will need after they graduate um fourth was how to deal and learn from failure and then teaching a trade um and this was actually a

consistent uh message that we got in all the thought exchanges we did both at the first one and the last one we were asking for feedback on our mission vision was the importance of trading right not necessarily solely in academic focus but to ensure that we're offering opportunities for kids to develop in trades as well um there is a word cloud which when joe gets pulls it up um you'll have the visual but the key so worked out um just give everyone a visual of what i'm looking at here it's it takes all the keywords within all these thoughts these people put on the thought exchange and then it sizes the words based on the number of times that they see that word um so when you look at this word cloud um the words

that that come out pretty frequently um so problem solving critical thinking um confidence and you'll see when you see the vision and mission statements we've actually incorporated a lot of those words into our end result right seeing that those were the important words from the community it makes sense to tie that and use that to guide um guide what we're talking about so joe if you can just jump to the word cloud just so people can see that quickly okay so here you go i mean you'll see these words like i said you'll see these reflecting in the last slide where we have our draft or proposed uh vision and mission statement um next slide please joe great so one of the things and this is where nicole aliotto really came in a huge value

to us um because when you think about vision and vision it's so easy to intertwine the two and we actually we did it as a committee right we ended up with two statements and they almost were identical um so nicole really honed in on this and helped guide us and i think as a board just read these carefully just so when you we get to the last slide you'll have it in your mind too so vision this should be our purpose right what is our reason for being um mission mission is how are we going to achieve that how are we going to um get the purpose or our ultimate vision and then the the middle bullet here we didn't have it originally um specifically highlighted but the reason we said you know what let's

have a separate bullet that we can also start adding to the documentation or the posters all of that stuff corresponding to our values so what shapes us um originally we didn't have this because we had so many words in our vision statement but then the vision saving became very jumbled with with too much uh language and it wasn't focused enough so we pulled those words out and put them into the values section uh next slide please joe um so we drafted like i said the first version of the mission vision these are the top uh results from the thought exchange when we put that out to the community so um and by the way this is jumbled um i think these responses come from both teachers parents and we only got one student response so

i actually didn't incorporate that one um into the slide deck but i could show that to any board member if they're interested um so just reading through these um they like the vision the setting of both division and mission statement um i think they're well worded interestingly enough in this first bullet there's more text to it um where they were focusing in on our current mission business statement about you know the wings and and kind of saying that that's not helpful you know it's not really driving home what we need to be doing as officially um a lot of focus on critical thinking again in problem-solving skills again this is also reflected in the first thought exchange um kindness and compassion was a key focus they really liked um seeing those as a a part

of what we were planning um to include here the vision is great but too wordy so again this was our first draft version we put out the public we ended up taking this back to committee shortened up the vision statement um i think we removed about five or so words carolyn and brian if i recall to really hone in and make it a little bit more pointed um and again popping up again developers and trades and i'll touch upon this once we get to the next slide i'll focus in on how we we thought we could make sure we're also focusing in on on students who may not go on to secondary education or college um but might be more trade balanced um and then creativity it was a key aspect of what people thought

we needed to uh give some consideration to so without further ado i think joe will go to the next slide and we can see where we where we ended up falling with our our statement so the vision our students will grow into critical thinkers and lifelong learners with integrity confidence and compassion mission again just going back to the definitions of mission how are we going to achieve our purpose or vision so mission is to create an inclusive welcoming educational community where all students can find their purpose and achieve their goals and then we have that that third layer which is the values right so these are the key features that as a district we are proposing we use to guide us in um achieving our vision and mission diversity kindness creativity and growth so that's

what i just want to say like this is outstanding i love it i i have to give kudos to all the administrators and joe and honestly like i said this was so much easier than i thought it was going to be um i was expecting to go in and be spinning you know around but no it was a really good um cohesive collaborative effort that's awesome but i i'm open to any more thoughts i mean if any of you have any thoughts or nicole um this is something that i've been asking for for seven years since i've been on the board and i just and i wasn't on the committee and but i'm in like awe of what you guys did i think that this is you captured it perfectly i feel like a little

teary-eyed about it i know right like oh my gosh it's so amazing i just i think i wouldn't have changed a single thing i think it says you know we've had conversations about it i really think it reflects who we are and what we want to become in some areas and i i think it's great thank you great anyone else have any feedback i do have a question is this something we need to vote on or is this something that just it now is yeah i didn't think he needed to vote to be honest but we want to make sure the board agrees with it right if the board came back and said you know look we don't like it then we bring it back to committee oh i'm a i'm a yes i love

it what do we do with the pack you know i was right there the board accepted it the board oh you were there so i think we need a motion to ex can i have a motion to accept the vision mission and values as presented by the strategic plan committee making motion second any discussion all those in favor [Music] [Applause] let's get some posters thanks chris christopher um we'll give you a little but thank you everyone brian yeah i just wanted to comment nicole was talking about it too one of the things we talked about the committee and i have to say this committee worked so well together was to create statements that even the children will be able to know you know we talked about making sure every building had them throughout the building

so we thought that these statements were easy for all of our uh constituents to understand and remember agreed it's just outstanding outstanding work about how it's actually implemented and how it works like you practice is it just like an accountability like guideline such for our community curriculum and like as a statement and what does that look like in the future like how do we is that my team so i didn't hear all of this did you hear that i didn't hear the talents yeah is that just is it like a guideline such goal or like a form of accountability for how our community operates in the future in terms of like curriculum and everything 100 percent so this is the framework for where we and it should guide it should guide the administration and um

the teachers and everyone involved in in everything that they do right so this is why we do what we do as educators this is what administrators everybody so we're all kind of moving in that direction this is where we're going it's like a more fellowship recognition and there's more to it um emily so um the traditional planning committee is still going to be meeting um and i talked about that assessment earlier coming out of that needs assessment we set those priorities and the outcomes that we expect we're looking to see after like five years um would you mind if myself or other students went to those meetings yeah you're more developed i mean i can't do a cartwheel anymore but i would so do it if i could this is exciting emily one of the

things we're going to do and i talked to this board about it was to bring some of the some of the data and the needs assessment and to have conversations with with student groups about this is what the data said what sort of actions or plans should we as a district put into place to do this there's a lot of really good information that that we we pulled out so the plan is is really to bring it to bring it to um the staff today there was a staff meeting where i shared some of the needs assessment with the high school staff and also we'll be sharing with the other the other staff and getting their feedback the staff feedback but we also want to get the students feedback on the needs assessment you know

this is the information we saw you know what do you think about it so it'll be kind of a data analysis little activity but as as nicole said you know the mission vision and the mission that's the lens that we hold up everything we do so everything we do needs to fit in this and if it doesn't fit why are we doing it so it's our it truly is our guidance and the way our consultants refer to it as the vision is our guiding star this is what we're looking to submission is what we actively do every day to get there so that's why the mission says to create inclusive so it's the two statement this is to create an inclusive welcoming educational community so it's something we should do every day while we're where

we're achieving our vision a great example of that is the restorative justice practices for an example of something that we're doing to create uh inclusive welcoming educational communities so that's a bullet point of something that we're doing to to help us get there does that make sense we're all very passionate about this if you can tell i know you know it's exciting thank you so much um so i am not gonna say anything i'm gonna let us end on that really good note for for all of our good stuff um but we do have public comment we do have one person who is wishing to speak for public comments um thanks again chris this that was just outstanding um so we want to welcome um i'm good hopefully i say your name correctly carrie defrost

debris yeah surprise um i'm like i know you and i'm like all of a sudden i don't know how to say your name um so for public comment um just to make sure that you're aware we don't use any any individual staff names or student names and you have three minutes we also typically don't respond i'm so sorry to be making public comment on the longest meeting night of the year everything that you guys have talked about tonight um i tried to make public comment at the meeting that i cancelled last week um through email over a pretty mundane like field trip uh issue that i wanted to bring to the board's attention hopes that you could nudge administration a little bit um and was told that um you guys weren't accepting public comment via

email anymore um and i it got me thinking about accessibility and equity and all the people that can't come to a meeting on a tuesday night for two hours um that might have something important to say to the board so i i just really wanted to ask you to um to consider uh opening that back up um one of the best things to come out of the printer with one of the only good things to come out of pandemic is this idea of accessibility like in special education we talk about universal design i'm sorry it's all my boss is like sitting right near me um and that gives students and teachers different modalities to present and receive information so i think that that's something that you guys could consider um bringing forth not going backward

but allowing like you know people to come and speak to you um through other other means of communication um new pulse just adopted uh their policy a couple months ago they allowed reply emails um because no one wants to you know hear our crazy letter over and over and over again um and but that's that's really it that's all i wanted to say i'll talk to you about the field trip another night okay well we appreciate um your comment thank you very much okay um miss pack recommended motion at the board of education and food agreement between toronto valley central school district and created response to conflict incorporated effective october 26 2021 through june 30th 2022 as presented i'll make promotion any discussion all in favor aye opposed motion carries thank you you're welcome uh
