001Good evening everyone. We are coming to you live from the East Gymnasium on the campus of Brunswick High School on a frigid winter night to bring you this greater Cleveland Conference matchup between the visiting Lorraine Titans and your Brunswick Blue Devils. I'm Paul Zan along with John Justice and we'll bring you all the action in this boys basketball battle. The Blue Devils enter the game 11-2 overall, 6-0 in the GCC. Their only losses are to a 12-1 Gilmore Academy team and they lost their last game to a 10-1 Lima senior team in Dayton. They currently are ranked 16th in the state and Joe Mackey's team is looking to get back in the win column tonight against a GCC opponent that they beat 6953 at Larraine. Yeah. Uh, you know, second round of GCC play here.
002We're we're actually not through the first round yet cuz we still got the makeup game against Shaker Heights, but that's the only team we haven't seen yet in conference play, but um we'll get them in a couple of weeks for the makeup. But yeah, first time uh second time around here in conference play. Uh went out to Lraine early in the season and got a good win. You know, you you look at Lraine's record and I think it's a little deceiving. Obviously, you know, they're a young team and um you know, maybe not having the best season overall record-wise, but they're talented. You know, you look at the game that they played against us earlier in the year and you look at the box score and it it was a six-point game going into the
003fourth quarter. Um they played some other teams in the conference recently really well. So, you know, expect tonight to be a good basketball game. Yeah, this is a one of those cases of don't judge teams by their record. Lraine brings a 1 and3 record into the contest. They're 0 and8 in the GCC, but in their last three games, they took Madina and Cleveland Heights into overtime before losing and then only lost to Menor by six in their last game. Yeah. All all teams that that played Brunswick incredibly hard and well in the first round of conference play. You know, Madina, we had the overtime game that was phenomenal. Uh Men was a really good game a couple weeks ago. Brunswick kind of extended it out at the end of the game. Um, but the Cleveland
004Heights game, granted, Trey Drexler didn't play in that game, and that's obviously a a big loss for Brunswick. You got to give credit to those other kids for stepping up in that game and and getting that conference win. Um, you given us the the chance to come into tonight still undefeated in conference play, but you know, you got to show up and, you know, every game in in league play in this league is going to be a good one. So, I expect Lraine to to give a best effort and expect a good basketball game tonight. Yeah, let's hope so. Uh we're going to bring it to you. Speaking of Trey Massie, he was honored before the game for breaking the all-time Brunswick scoring record. Uh it was it was great that the person uh whose
005record he broke, Trey Massie, was on hand to hand the ball. And that's when you say he didn't play against Cleveland Heights. I mean, that's a big miss. >> Yeah. And two really great pregame presentations. Obviously, the first one was to recognize Trey Drexler. obviously such a phenomenal player, one of the greats to come through the program, breaking the career scoring record and and yeah, what a special moment to have Trey Massie who who originally held that record previously uh to come back and present Trey with that that game ball. You know, I've been lucky enough to see that career scoring record uh get broken four times now. We'll talk about that a little bit tonight, but it's great to have Trey back to present Trey with his game ball for breaking the career scoring
006record. And you know, we'll talk a little bit more about the youth program tonight, but also a really, you know, great opportunity to to have the youth players here tonight. And uh, you know, it's a big part of why this program has the success that it does. You build from the bottom, and that's what the Brunswick teams in every sport do. Well, right now, we're going to turn it over to the public address announcer, and we'll be back for the start of the contest. >> And of course, your team and opponents. Let's make tonight's contest great by remembering to respect the game. Be loud, be proud, and be respectful. Thank you. Now, ladies and gentlemen, we ask that you please stand, remove your hats, and direct your attention to the north end of the gymnasium
007for the plank of our national anthem. Sung tonight by Caitlyn Hullberg. By the early twilight, We So proof through the night there. Oh, for the land of the Thank you, Kale. And now let's meet the start line fin 62 senior number four Brandon Sorado. Guard number 24 at guard 6 junior number two at guard 51 junior number three Jeremiah Daniels guard junior number the night guard goes And now the starting title for your Brooklyn and forward I see your for junior number 12 and forward on senior number 1 2 Put your hand. It's basketball time. It's time to be the guy. All right, we're back with you. Ready for tip off. Very cold night outside, but there wasn't a parking spot available out there. This place is full and ready for some great basketball. Yeah,
008I wasn't sure exactly what type of crowd we would get tonight. Uh weather certainly isn't great outside. It's a little cold. It's only going to get worse on us the rest of the weekend, but I'm glad we're playing tonight and be back here tomorrow again, too. Another home game, back-to-back nights against Glennville. All right, after a bad throw, they swap out. Blue Devils win the tip and we're underway here in Brunswick. Drew Mattis >> hands the ball off to Drexler. Back to Mattis. Mattis on the wing. Gets it inside to Barnett. Back to Mattis. >> Thought about the shot instead. Drives in. Puts it up. Puts it in. Drew. >> It's a good drive and score for Drew Mattis. Picking up where he left off last time against Lraine. Had a 16-point game against him
009last time. >> All right. Titans with the ball. Drexler with the steal. takes it in. Stealing a score and Brunswick hops up to a four nothing lead. >> Brunswick pressing right now. >> Titans get the ball across. Backcourt violation. That's just a case of he had nowhere to go. >> Yeah. >> And Sorado threw it to the only jersey that he saw that was his color. >> Yeah. Good pressure there by Aiden Ever to uh come up, force the backcourt violation. All right, Blue Devils to inbound. Pass it into the back court to Mattis. >> Mattis dribbles left, dishes out. Ever with the ball, gets it to Barnett. Barnett double team in trouble. >> Jump ball. >> Brandon Serrano forces the jump ball. Possession arrow goes to Lraine. >> So they'll have it on offense.
010Still trying to get on the board. So, both teams starting off with pressure right off the bat on the defensive end. >> Yeah, Devils applying that typical half court pressure. Daniels with the ball, puts it up for three in and out. Rebound fought for and grabbed by Mattis. Devils come the other way. Mattis coast to coast. Lost the handle. Ball grabbed by Ever. throws it off a Lraine Player. Blue Devils to inbound from the baseline. >> Looked like there was a little bit of contact there, but surprising didn't get the call, but good hustle to get the ball back >> inside to Barnett. Barnett goes up strong. He's fouled by Brandon Serrano. >> I tell you, interesting offensive look for Brunswick to start the game. both possessions they're putting Shawn Barnett down in the post
011and trying to get it inside to him. You know, Shawn obviously such a phenomenal three-point shooter. You see him out on the perimeter a lot, but so far tonight, we're seeing them down in the post. >> Yeah, that's the great thing about the two leaders on this Blue Devil squad. Both Barnett and Drexler can drain the three from pretty far out, but can also create at the basket. Barnett hits the first. >> Second one leaves it short. Ever with the rebound back out to Barnett. He puts the three ball in the air and hits >> two again all season long. Aiden Ever just all over the boards. He's averaging 10.7 a game and and and a leader in the Cleveland area in rebounds this year. He's just always all over the glass. defense again >>
012makes it happen for Brunswick. Force a 10-second violation against the press. And like that, Lraine calls their first timeout of the game. >> Oh, >> you said it. You got those two guys that can certainly knock it down from three-point pretty frequently. And they got 75. Well, now 76 when Shawn hits that, but 75 three-pointers to come into the game between the two of them. Barnett with 45 and Trey Drexler with 30. >> It's the It's the stamp of a a Joe Mackey team. >> Yeah. >> You You need to be able to play everywhere on the floor. Yep. >> You need to be able to shoot jumpers. You need to be able to create and drive to the hoop. >> And you need to play defense. And so far, we've seen all of that
013as the Devils race out to an eight nothing lead. >> Yeah. Every one of the guys on the floor is able to to to shoot it from the perimeter and it it just makes you so dangerous. You got five guys who can all pull from from really anywhere. All right, let's see if the Blue Devils can keep it going. Eight nothing run to start the quarter. Four for Barnett >> to lead the way. >> Lraine just hasn't been able to figure out the Blue Devil press. >> They've only taken one shot so far. Blue Devils to inbound after the turnover. >> Yeah, great pressure so far by Brunswick. You know, already forced Lorraine into three turnovers. You know, turnovers lead to points. Here's going to be another one. >> Great pass. >> Then Drew Mattis,
014little shoulder fake, drives to the basket, puts it in. And the Blue Devils now in double digits up 10 nothing. Pressure still applied. Lraine gets it across. And now they'll try to make something happen on the offensive end. Shot blocked by Ever. Lraine gets it back. Three up in the air. No good by Torres. Another offensive rebound. Three in the air and good. >> Jaylen Jackson gets the Titans on the scoreboard. >> Yeah, you know, turnovers lead to points. So do offensive rebounds. Yeah, that was not able to clear that defensive possession, but >> at the other end, Mattis tries to answer. Three is just a little long. Rebound by Serrano. Jackson with the ball up top. Dribbles against Stella. Gets the ball off to Daniels. Daniels drives, puts it up with the left hand.
015Blocked by Mattis. >> Out of bounds. On the rebound, the Titans step out of bounds. So, Blue Devils will bring it the other way. >> Yeah, doing a great job defending the rim so far. Last possession, you had Aiden with a a nice block and then Drew Mattis clears that one. >> 103 your score. 445 remaining here. First quarter. >> Barnett puts it up from deep. No good. Ever with the rebound. Gets it out to Mattis. Back up top to Barnett. Wide open three. Got it. for one, two. >> Hey, you can't leave him that wide open. >> Yeah, that's that's not the guy you want to leave open. No. At the other end, Kane Taliano gets the friendly roll, making it a 135 game. Barnett fakes, drives, puts it up, puts it in. >>
016So, Barnett showing all phases of his game right now. >> Yeah. scoring inside in the post. Driving to the hoop, >> knocking down a couple threes so far. >> Barnett went for the steal there. >> He'll get called for the foul. >> First substitution of the game. >> Nehemiah Gardner on the floor for the Titans. >> And the rain will try to get something going. Send it into the back court. Jackson on the dribble. They'll go up against Stella. Crosses through the legs. >> Titans run the offense. >> Jackson drives it in. Puts it in. Called for the offensive foul. >> Foul. >> That time Barnett stood his ground. Nullifies the basket. number 11 in first. >> Yeah, I'm not sure Coach Kellian agrees with that call, but good job by Shawn stepping over, getting
017in position, taking the charge. You certainly don't want to see a block there cuz that's going to be his second still midway through the first quarter. So, good job getting his feet set. >> Three ball by Mattis in and out. >> Yeah, look who it is there on the rebound. Yeah, still again. >> Barnett's three long. >> Javevel Morris on the rebound for the Titans. Gets it down quickly. Three by Taliano. No good. Devils with some pace. Drexler from deep. Long. Rebound batted around. Finally controlled by Taliano. Gets it out to Jaylen Jackson. >> Slips. Shot. No good. put back. No good. And Gardner stripped of the ball. >> Barnett trying to make him pay and he does. >> Shawn Barnett. >> 12 points here in the first quarter. >> Yeah, I think I said
018it a few minutes ago. You can't leave him that wide open. >> And just great vision by Drexler. That's >> yeah, >> what makes him so good. He doesn't have to be the scorer. He's very happy. and very able to pass the ball in critical situations. All right, Lraine needs an answer here. Down 18 to five. 215 left first quarter. Ball handed off to Morris. Morris tied up. Jump ball. Possession belongs to Brunswick. >> And they'll go back on offense. >> You know, again, just keep the pressure on, continue to cause turnovers. Get the ball back. Give yourself a chance at the other end. >> All right, Drexler with the ball. Guarded by Daniels. >> Gets it off to Stella to Barnett. Back to >> I thought he was going to pull that one. >>
019Listen, he's feeling it right now. >> Yeah. Well, there he goes. >> That one's a little long. Rebound by Gardner. Titans coming the other way. Devils leave someone open on the other end and Jeremiah Jeremiah Daniels makes them pay off the glass. >> Yeah, so far everything Lraine's really had tonight has been in transition where they've get gotten a couple guys out in front and been able to score. >> Drexler thinks about it. Passes off to Barnett. Barnett back to Drexler. >> Drexler inside the paint. Looks great pass. Great ball movement, >> but the three is no good. >> Yeah, shot didn't go, but I tell you, really good ball movement there against >> the zone, but >> transition points again. >> Yeah, you got to get back in defending transition. >> Yeah, Jelle Morris
020grabbed that rebound, took it coast to coast. >> 18-9 now. Blue Devils lead. There's a turnover. Jeremiah Daniels takes it against Barnett. Dishes it off to Jackson. >> Ball knocked away. Titans will keep it. >> Morris to inbound on the baseline. Bodies get tied up. Morris looking finally finds somebody on the cut and that's Kane Taliano. >> He lays it up and in. Hey, good good response by Lraine. Cut the lead to seven here coming into the last minute of the game. >> Drexler in the corner. Thought about a three. Dribbles out. Now he'll shoot that three and hits it. >> Three. Drexler for one. >> Just like that. Devils back to a double- digit lead. Titans probably will try to get the last shot here in the first quarter. They get it across the
021timeline into the fourourt. Three in the corner by Daniels. No good. Blue Devils will now have a chance for the last shot as Drexler runs down the rebound. >> A little bit of little bit of a force there with the clock right running down, but it gives Brunswick another chance here. >> Dexler shot no good. Rebound by Ever. Can't get a shot off. And after one quarter, >> Blue Devils on top 2111. Shawn Barnett leading the way with 12. Drexler with five. >> Yeah, you'll take that start for sure. You know, again, you waiting to see what type of response Lraine would have to the start that that Brunswick had. They did a good job. They got some some baskets in transition and, you know, cut the lead down to 10 coming into the second
022quarter here. >> Yeah, the Blue Devils ran out to a 10- nothing lead and that's the difference in the game right now as they lead 2111. And we talked about in the pregame how Lraine has been playing very well lately. Uh slow start, but then they picked up the pace, got some transition baskets, got some turnovers, and uh I'm sure that's what coach Macky's talking about in the huddle. >> Yeah, a couple defensive lapses there in the last few possessions. You know, again, Lurine got out and was able to run a little bit and get himself back in the game here. Now, you know, you got to see how you respond to this. You want to have a good possession here. It's our ball coming out to start the second quarter. Be interesting to see
023what Lorraine comes out defensively with. You know, we saw a lot of face guarding in the first matchup, uh, particularly against Shawn Barnett. Particularly against Barnett in the first game, but you know, we're seeing some zone defense here. >> All right. Well, >> I apologize. I was wrong. It's Lraine ball to begin the second quarter. >> Titans will start off with the ball. in the second quarter after a couple of tie-up situations in that first quarter. >> They'll run what looks like the weave. Morris with the ball goes behind the back. He's cut off. Gets it to Jackson. Jackson puts up the three. Front of the rim. No good. >> On the floor for the Blue Devils, >> it's Hamilton. >> Yeah, good hustle by the freshman there. the first substitution for the Blue Devils
024tonight. >> Yeah, this is really uh Blake Hamilton's first game back in a couple of weeks. He got a little bit of time down in Dayton on Saturday, but you know, unfortunately and time off didn't hurt him. >> Yeah, really. Well, unfortunately, he got injured in the first Lraine matchup. He's been out for about five or six weeks here, you know. Happy to see him back. had a tremendous two quarters in the JV game, was just absolutely on fire and I think finished with 23 points in just over two plus quarters. Now coming out here and immediately becoming a contributor in the varsity game and hits his first shot off the bench. Titans answered with a layup at the other end. Drexler drives, puts it up. No good. Rebound pulled down by Jeremiah Daniels. Lraine
025quickly comes to the other end. Daniels up top. dribbles, hands off to Morris. Morris back to Daniels. Puts up the three. It's true. >> Cuts the lead to 2416. >> They keep looking up at the scoreboard and Lurine just keeping themselves in the game right now. >> Hamilton thought about it. Dribbles across, gets the ball to Mattis. Mattis spins. He's cut off back to Hamilton. Hamilton's three. Short rebound grabbed by Serrano. And here they come the other way. Javal Morris against Barnett. Hands the ball off to Daniels. They continue to run a weave style offense here. >> Yeah, big possession here for Lraine. They can get a score here. They really cut into the lead and close the gap. Three in the air. misses everything. Hamilton grabs the rebound. Drexler brings it up. Quick three.
026No good. Mattis with the rebound. Goes straight up and he's fouled. >> Jaylen Jackson on the >> foul. Jaylen Jackson. >> Mattis will head to the line. Shooting two. >> Mattis. Four points so far. First one long. >> Taliano checks back in for Lorraine replacing Morris. Mattis gets the ball. Three dribbles, shoots, hits. Back on the floor for the Blue Devils. Number two, Luke Stella. He'll give Drew Mattis his first rest of the game. Devils back to the press. Lraine doing what you're supposed to do to break the press, which is passing the ball. They get it across, get a wideopen three. Jeremiah Daniels starting to heat up. >> He now has nine points. You got a seven-point game. Three by Ever. Short offensive rebound for the Blue Devils. They'll get a second chance. >>
027Hamilton to Ever. Ever dribbles into the paint. Back to Hamilton. Coach Mackey calling out the play. Three in the air by Stella. No good. Ball knocked out of bounds by Aiden Ever. >> A good look there from Luke Stella. Just rimmed out on him. Yeah, sometimes you do everything right, >> it just doesn't go in. >> Extending the pressure a little bit here. >> Jaylen Jackson on the dribble matching up with Stella. Stolen by Barnett. Here we go. >> Barnett lays it in with the steel. >> He now has 14 points. Devils up 2718. >> Another steal by the Blue Devils. >> Drexler layup no good. Barnett right there for the tip in. >> Surprised that's not a goalend there. I mean Lorraine player goes up and hits the backboard and deflects the shot out.
028I mean Shawn was there to clean it up and get the basket anyways but really probably should have been called a goalend. And just like that, the Blue Devils extend back to an 11-point lead. Every time Lraine makes a run, the Blue Devils answer. >> Shot by Daniels. No good. Hamilton brings it the other way. Shoots it out to Barnett. Three in the air. Long. >> Rebound by Jackson. >> Strong move there by Jaylen Jackson. >> Gets the ball to go. And he's fouled. >> Yeah, it's a really good finish. >> Trey Drexler got a hand on that ball. Really good defensive play on his part, but he was able to maintain and balance and get up to the hoop and get fouled and finish it. >> Blue number one. >> Short rest for Drew
029Mattis. He's back on the floor. One shot for Jackson. Try to complete the three-point play. No good. Barnett with a rebound. >> He'll bring it the other way. Dribbles across the timeline into the fourourt. Gets it over to Mattis. Mattis to Hamilton to Drexler again. Great ball movement. Drexler. Wide open three. Got it. >> Drexler. One, two. >> Drexler now starting to find the stroke. He has eight. Blue Devils back up by 11. >> Another turnover here. >> Devils on the break. >> Drexler with another three. >> Wow. Six quick points by Brunswick. >> Now they're up 3521. Answer at the other end by Jeremiah Daniels. He's got 12. A pullup transition three. >> Hamilton to Mattis. >> Ball in the hands of Drexler. His pass stolen by Jackson. Dribbles the other way. Cut off
030by Hamilton. They'll have to set up in the offense. Daniels with the ball. Hands it off to Serrano. Serrano to Taliano. Dribbles inside. Blocked by Stella. Out of bounds. Blue double ball. >> It's a great job stepping up, taking away the shot. And a good block by Luke Stella there. Really solid defensive play. >> Gardner and Morris check back in for the Titans. >> Yeah. Oh, so we're seeing a little bit of a defensive look what we saw from Lraine the first time where they're going to face guard Shawn Barnett. Barnett double team down low. Pulls the ball away. Devils swing it around. Get it back to Drexler. Drexler with another three. >> He's got nine points in about 90 seconds. >> That's not uncommon for him. >> I think I've seen that a number
031of times. Yeah, listen. Once they start feeling it, they keep feeding them. Offensive rebound by Serrano and he puts it back in. Minute 20 left in the half. Blue Devils 3825. There's another one by Drexler. Drexler one, two. This is why he's the leading scorer in the history of this program. >> Yeah. Leading scorer in the history in the program. Leading scorer in Madina County right now. >> I didn't think he was going to pull that one at first. Took a nice nice dribble and a step and then put it up and >> what hit his fourth three in the last two minutes. >> Yeah, he he thought about it for a second and said, "Why not? I've hit the last three." Yeah, >> fantastic job by the Blue Devils >> as Lraine had cut
032it close here in the second quarter. They got it down to, I believe, six points and now they've extended it to a 41-25 lead. Have a chance to go into the half with a nice cushion. >> Yeah, we'll see what uh Coach Mackey comes out with defensively here. Interested to see if he decides to bring the pressure back up full court again here. Yeah, you saw that Vegas look. That's their fullourt pressure. off the last made shot. >> We're here on youth night. So, we got a lot of young Blue Devils in the house watching this performance by Barnett and Drexler and the rest of the Blue Devils who all contribute. When you see this ball movement, they're the two putting it in the hoop, but they're getting help with great passing, offensive and defensive
033rebounding from their teammates. >> Yeah, absolutely. total team effort right now. >> You know, you you mentioned the youth program and it's this is always such a great night when when they do youth night. You know, you just see a a sea of boys with blue shirts on, their warm-up shirts from the travel program. You know, I I was lucky enough to experience that with my son. And it's really the reason this program is what it is is because these kids start playing Brunswick basketball, you know, in third grade for a lot of them, some of them in first and second grade, but they start playing this system that early on. They start knowing how to play Brunswick basketball from such a young age. >> Ever. >> It's contagious. Aiden Ever now gets the three.
034Yeah. And that's the hallmark of a great program. And you see that with with all the programs, coach Dodson and the soccer program. >> Uh Coach Ward and the the girls soccer program. I mean, they they've got their coaches involved with the youth and they start building them >> and and giving them the expectations early on. >> Yeah. I mean, I you know, just talking basketball for a second. I mean, even if you look at some of our opponents who are just really highlevel programs, you look at their youth programs. They all have strong youth programs. You know, you watch kids come up and you wonder why like you I'll use Madina as example. Madina's got a really good basketball program, but they've got a really good travel program, a really good youth program as
035well, too. So, you know, you said it. hallmark of a really elite program is is that you see that that strong youth program where those kids start playing their system and their program early on. >> All right, so Lraine hits a basket right at the buzzer. Blue Devils at the half lead 44-27 and we're going to turn it over >> to the Dancing Devils and we'll be back for the start of the second half. All right, Paul's on and John Justice back here with you >> at Brunswick High School. Blue Devils leading 4427 over Lraine at halftime. And uh we saw a great all-around team performance in that first half. Trey Drexler leading scoreer was 17. Shawn Barnett was 16. uh in a quarter that so far this season has been the best for the
036Blue Devils. Uh averaging 18.3 points per quarter in the second quarter and they did the same thing here. They did it with defense and second chances. >> Yeah, so far a pretty solid defensive effort by Brunswick. um you know, forcing Lraine into a number of turnovers, you know, but you look at the scoreboard right now and yeah, you look up there and you see a quick start for Shawn Barnett in the first quarter. You we mentioned it in the first half in the in the first matchup against Lraine. Lraine really tried to take Shawn Barnett away. They face guarded him quite a bit. Um they didn't do that to start the game. He he burned him a little bit. They switched to that in the second quarter for portion of the second. Then you saw
037Trey Drexler come out and burn him in the second quarter. >> Yeah. It's it's one of those situations where you pick your poison and you have to hope that one of them is having an off night. Yep. Because if you leave, in this case, Barnett with a hot hand in the first quarter, so they start focusing on him and Drexler comes out and hits three three-pointers in a short amount of time in that second quarter and they find themselves, you know, down 4427. Yeah, pick your poison's exactly right. I mean, you can only try to take one of them away. That's going to leave the other one with some some some open opportunities. But, you know, you mentioned it as well, too. It's a It's an overall team effort, too. You look at the other
038players in the starting lineup. You got Blake Hamilton came off the bench, hit a big three, you know, like it normally is. Aiden Ever's been all over the boards. So, again, every everyone's doing their job so far and they're doing it really well and, you know, that's why you see that they were able to extend that lead out right at the end of halftime. And I'm sure one of the things that coach Mackey talked about in the locker room uh was trying to clean up the transition game. Jeremiah Daniels leads the Titans with 12 points and a lot of those were on transition threes. Yeah. Yeah. A lot a lot of Lraine's looks so far in this game have been buckets in transition. Um Brunswick did a much better job in the especially the second
039part of the second quarter really kind of shutting that down and that's why you saw the lead extend out for him. Yeah. And when we talk about a total team effort, a lot of it's on the defensive end. Uh Luke Stella has done a fantastic job on the defensive end uh locking down uh various guards that he's covering. uh it doesn't show up in the box score. Uh but he's also part of on the offensive end the great ball movement that goes on. He's a great great passer. >> Yeah. Does a great job penetrating and getting into the lane and then finding that kick and that's where a lot of those looks come come from. Drew Mattis does a great job with it as well too. Um you know, but they they've all done a
040really solid job defensively so far tonight as well too. You know, four out of the five starters all all have a block right now. All right, we're getting set here to get the second half underway on youth night here. So, we got a lot of young Blue Devils getting an idea what it's all about. And also a night that we honored number three Trey Drexler for becoming the all-time leading scorer. And the amazing thing about that is he broke that record with still two months left in the season. So that record is going to be one that's hard to beat down the road. >> Yeah, he's really moving his name up on not just the Brunswick alltime scoring list. He has that record now, but he's really moving his name up on the Madina County
041record as well. And it'll be interesting to see as as like you said, you know, we've still got I believe what 10 regular season games left, nine regular season games left. But you know, then you also hope maybe there's a potential for a deep tournament run for this team too. That is the hope for sure. >> Lorraine starts the third quarter with the ball. >> Daniels found himself in two deep, but they get a second chance. >> Kane Taliano, makes the Blue Devils pay. 4428. Three in and out by Luke Stellar. Jackson brings it the other way for the Titans and they set up the offense. Jaylen Jackson hands it off to Torres. Torres back to Jackson. Drives on Ever. They kick it out. Torres swings it around back to Taliano. Puts up a shot
042over Drexler. No good. Barnett goes up high for the rebound. Brings it the other way. >> Yeah, tough look there. You'll take that look. Ever for three and it's pure for one, two. >> Yeah, good job there by both Luke Stella and Aiden Ever. Luke Stella get getting in the lane and penetrating. Turned back had a great kick and Aiden's there to knock it down. >> His second three of the night. Six points. >> Two tough looks two possessions in a row for Lraine there. Good defense by Brunswick. Yeah, Blue Devils not making it easy. Mattis drives in. Little contact, no call. Shot doesn't go. Brought the other way by Jackson. He kicks it out. Pass a little high. Turnover for the Titans. Blue Devils with a chance to extend their lead. Drexler takes the
043inbound, hands it right back to Mattis. Mattis passes across to Ever. Back to Mattis. Kicks it out. Three in the air. No good by Stella. Offensive rebound. Blue Devils with another chance in the quarter corner. Mattis fakes the three. Taliato bought the fake. Hook line and sinker. >> A little bit of a breakdown there for the Titans. Good job by Drew Mattis to expose that and get to the hoop and score. >> Yeah, he had no one backing him up. So once he took that fake, wide open lane. Seven points now on the evening for Mattis. Talliano gets it over to Jackson. Jackson has it stripped by Stella. Blue Devils on the break. Drexler from deep. That one was off to the left. Rebound by Taliano. Jackson picks up his dribble up top to Taliano.
044Dribbling against Stella now. Gives the ball back to Jaylen Jackson. Titans running the offense. Torres up top. Torres puts up the three. Front of the iron. No good. Rebound by Ever. Oh, Mattis went for the dunk. Didn't get it. Rebound by Barnett. Madison goes for the three. No good. Rebound fought for by and grabbed by Taliano. He brings it all the way to the other end. Contested shot. No good. Offensive rebound. Titans three. No good. And the Blue Devils come away with the rebound. Mattis again. A wide open lane and he'll take those easy two points. Yeah, a little bit of a rough start for Lraine here to start the second half. Come out a little bit cold and Brunswick pushed the lead out to 22 here. >> Serrano's pass grabbed by Ever Drexler off
045the backboard. Yeah, >> two-handed slam by Barnett, but unfortunately he lost the handle. >> So when he held on to the rim, >> yeah, >> it's offensive goalending. >> It's going to be offensive goalending. It's close, but >> great idea there by you might argue that a little more, but probably the right call. Drexler ties up Jackson on the drive. >> Possession arrow belongs to the Blue Devils number. >> Jir Booker checks in for Lraine. Ever to inbound surrounded by the Titan cheerleaders >> who quickly back away. Drexler brings it into the fourcourt. Guarded by Daniels. Gets the ball to Ever. >> Ever to Mattis. Drexler right in front of the Blue Devil bench. He's doubled. Loses the ball. Gets it back again. Has it knocked away. Blue Devils maintain possession. >> Drew Mattis to
046trigger from the side >> right next to his dad. drive and a score. Aiden Ever. >> If Lorraine's going to face guard Shawn Barnett and then try to throw a double anytime Trey starts to get any type of penetration, that's going to leave a lot of opportunities for some other players here. Yeah, right now Titans are giving up way too many layups >> and having a tough run at the offensive end as well. Jaylen Jackson drives in, >> loses the ball and the Blue Devils have possession. Mattis will dribble it up. Coach Mackey calls out the offense. Blue Devils get in position. >> Three in the air for Ever >> and it's good. His third three of the night, 11 points. And so far in the second half, it's been everybody else doing the scoring
047as Barnett and Drexler still haven't scored. >> You know what? They're obviously they're Lraine's making that their focus, but again, you you really lose any type of help. >> And then that opens up opportunities for your other players and Aiden Everett and Luke Stella and Drew Mattis are doing a great job capitalizing on that. >> Trey Drexler heard me and said, "Well, it's time to score in the second half." He puts it up and in, but then the Blue Devils >> give him an easy bucket to Daniels in transition. Three Blue Devils right now in double figures. >> Mattis drives in, kicks it out. Mattis back up top. Blue Devils reset. Pass by Stella. Intercepted by Taliano. They get it up the court to Jackson who can't make it go. Drexler pushes it at the
048other end into the paint. Loses it. Gets it back. >> Shot. No good. >> Rebound for Daniels. >> Who puts up a three front of the rim backboard no good. Blue Devils get the rebound. >> Coach Mackey >> with a 30 second timeout. >> That's a good timeout for Brunswick there. We were going up and up and down the last couple of possessions. Couple turnovers, couple misses by Lraine. Bring them in, talk them through it. Have a good offensive possession here. You want to close out the quarter strong. Blue Devils up 5831. Have not had a foul called yet in this third quarter. And very few fouls so far for the entire game. >> Yeah, really not that many. If you look up at the scoreboard right now, you got one player with with one
049on Brunswick side and excuse me, two players with one foul on Brunswick's side and one player with two fouls on Lraine side for the entire game. So, this is this is a point in the game where you really want to try and maintain the lead, extend it out a little bit, especially when you got such a quick turnaround. You know, you're right back here in 24 hours for another game and and you got another tough matchup tomorrow night. Glendel's a good team and that's always hard going back to back nights. You don't see it as much in in high school. You always hear about it in the NBA, but every now and then you got those backto-back nights on the high school schedule. Fourth three of the night for Ever. >> He's now got 14.
050>> The freshman Blake Hamilton back on the floor. He's the only player to see action off the bench so far this evening for the Blue Devils. >> Pump fake by Taliano. He gets it up and in. Taliano now with eight. 25 seconds remaining here in the third quarter. I'm sure Coach Mackey will look for the last shot. Daniels up on Drexler providing the pressure. Down to 10 on the clock. Drexler to Ever. Ever kicks it out. Hamilton with the ball. Gets it to Mattis. Mattis loses the handle. Shot does not count by Ever at the buzzer. >> 61 for the Blue Devils. 33 for the Titans >> after three quarters. And really right now, not much going right for the Titans on either end of the floor. >> Yeah, it's it's a tough third quarter
051there. Um, you know, Brunswick did a a good job exposing a few things there, forcing some more turnovers, you know, and certainly had a little more success on the offensive end, cashing in on some of their looks, allowing them to extend the lead out to 28 here. Again, we just mentioned you want to you want to maintain the lead. If you want to try and extend it out a little bit, >> yeah, maybe get yourself to that magic 35 number. >> Get that clock running and and and try >> conserve some legs for tomorrow night. He doesn't quarter3 jumping around. >> Now the Devil Den is up and jumping around at the command of our PA announcer trying to help get the Blue Devils focused and pumped for this fourth quarter. Former all-time leading scorer
052Trey Massie even stood up and tried to get the crowd going a little bit as he's hung out for the game after being a part of the ceremony awarding the ball to uh Trey Drexler at the beginning of the game. Here we go. Titans with the ball to begin the fourth quarter. >> Torres sends it back up to Jackson. You know, you mentioned the the ceremony pregame and I just think about, you know, in the last 10 to 12 years, we've seen that scoring record, that career scoring record broken four times. And you you talk about some of the all-time greats. Ryan Bowski broke it, I think 12 or 13 years ago. >> The freshman Hamilton, his second three of the night. Then eventually you see Kyle Guestler break that record and then two years
053after that Trey Massie and now Trey Drexler. Uh you know again you just talk about some all-time greats that have worn the Brunswick uniform. >> We've seen a lot of great players come through coach Mackey's program. That's why he's the winniest coach in Madina County history. >> Jeremiah first. It's great to have Kyle Guestler back here. >> Yeah. >> As uh working on the girls side and it's awesome to see. He's doing a great job. >> Yeah. >> Coach Gestler and Coach Fink are having a nice season right now. >> They are definitely uh building a winning program and their their third year at the helm of the varsity program. Jackson can't get it to go at the other end. The lob. Mattis can't get it to go. Comes up hobbling. Unfortunately, he can't put
054any pressure on that that leg. He'll get subbed out. Luke Stella back in. >> He'll head over to the trainer. >> Yeah. Hopefully, it's nothing serious. Obviously, Drew Mattis is a huge part of of this team and and the success that they have. He sprained that ankle a little earlier in the season, so hopefully it's just a cramp. It looks like maybe it might be. He's over with the trainer. Three in the air by Daniels. Rim no good. Ever there for rebound. Pushes it up. gets it to Hamilton. He puts it in. Yeah, nice little floater by Blake there. Nice floater. >> Lorraine with the ball. Down 6635. Jaylen Jackson. >> Three in the air. Hits it. >> Eight points on the night for Jackson. Drexler drives. Nice dish. Ball knocked out of the hands
055of Ever. Back out top to Drexler. Drexler three. AND THERE. GOT IT. >> Drexler for one, two. >> 22 points now for Drexler. Leading all scorers. Jaylen. >> Ball stripped away from Jaylen Jackson. >> Drexler on the break. Lays it in with the left hand. >> Timeout. >> Brunswick. >> 30 second timeout. We'll see a new face coming off the bench when we come out of the timeout. Well, we are approaching the uh magic number here. Get that clock running. >> Now, we've got another another Barnett in the stands who's doing big things at college. >> Quid having a great season at Walsh. This is brother Shawn comes over and checks to make sure everything's okay with Q. Doing having a great year at Walsh. It's always great when the players move on to the
056next level, do well and still come back to to support the program that helped them get where they are. >> Yeah. You know, Coach Mackey talks a lot about that about his program and he talks about about the being a family and and and you know, that all starts with what we talked about earlier, the youth program. The kids come up in the program, they eventually they play their four years in the program. But then you always see a lot of them back, the alumni come back. >> Yeah. Both both from a a fan standpoint, you see a lot of them show up at the alumni games. Barnett gets it inside, puts it up and in. >> A lot of strength there by Barnett, but then you also see a lot of them showing back
057up on coaching staffs, including coach Mackey staff. Yeah. with coach Mackey Trevor that being and coach Sabu all former players. >> Three in the air short by Daniels. Long rebound to Barnett. Gets it to Ever. Ever back to Barnett. Barnett. Three in the air. In and out. Rebound. Titans. Blue Devils up 7340. Taliano puts it up. No good. Rebound by Torres. Torres puts it up and in. >> First two points of the night for Abel Torres. Hamilton loses it. Grab by Daniels who has 18 so far. Looking to add to it right there. Can't get it to go. Hamilton with the rebound. Multiple players getting ready to come in for both teams. >> Barnett can tell his time is near, so puts up one last three before I'm sure he goes out. Number five, Dom
058Fenton. >> Number 13, Brandt Elmati. >> Check in for the Blue Devils. Also, number 10, Prince Abby came in during the last timeout. He's been one of the the key bench players for the Blue Devils. >> Javevel Morris hits the three. >> Just over 3 minutes remaining. 7345. Blue Devils on top. See if some of the bench guys can get in the book. Three in the air. No good rebound by the Titans. Dominic Valentine on the rebound. One of the bench players now in backcourt violation on the Titans. Couple more Blue Devil bench guys getting in. Aiden Lombardo and Sam Watkins now in the game. This is good. You get some you get some other guys some valuable experience and you know again with the quick turnaround tomorrow save some legs going into the game
059against Glennville. Abby kicks it out. Fenton takes the shot. No good. rebound Gardner, >> you know, and it's going to be a tough stretch the second half of the season. You know, you look at it, the the last two conference games have been postponed due to weather. And so when you see that schedule come out, you you have some open Tuesdays in January and February, you look at that and kind of like that. It gives you a little bit of rest in that grind of the season. And unfortunately those open Tuesdays get games scheduled on them now that have to be made up. So really the the remainder of the season I think all but one week or maybe all of them. You got Tuesday Friday games every week. It'll be a tough stretch will
060definitely test uh the bench cuz I think they're going to have to see some more time and contribute some more. Prince Abby loses his footing, loses the ball. Valentine brings it the other way. Rudolph's pass is knocked away and stolen. Watkins, nice pass to Abby. Prince Abby puts it up. Puts it in. Minute 25 remaining here in this greater Cleveland Conference matchup. Rudolph up top >> dribbles to the circle. Thinks about a three. Picks up his dribble. No shot available. Gets it off to Valentine. Valentine to Maldonado. >> His shot won't go. Hustles to get his own rebound, but then loses the handle. >> Blue Devils will bring it the other way. Well, we got an early start tomorrow. Still a a triple head or all three teams, but I think the freshman are a
0614:00, which then leads to a nice early start for both the JV and then the varsity. >> Blue Devils content to uh work on their passing and dribbling. >> They're not going to take any more shots. Well, we want to thank you for joining us tonight. Uh we've got one more of these live streams on the schedule coming up in February. >> So, pay attention to the Blue Devil athletic department socials and you'll know when that is. But the Blue Devils with the 7547 win over the Lraine Titans improving their record to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the GCC total team win. Another great performance by Joe Mackey squad. >> Yeah, great effort tonight. You know, the important number here is 7-0 in GCC play. That's what you want to see. You're you're exactly halfway
062through the conference schedule. Um, you know, still don't have that loss on there, which is great. you know, trying to defend your conference championship and certainly out to a good start. So, quick turnaround tomorrow, but then it's right back to conference play on Tuesday. It'll be a great test for the Blue Devils tomorrow. We want to thank the Beat for helping us put on this live stream. We want to thank athletic director Jim Kobe for helping set it up. We want to thank you for listening and watching. And we'll be back with you next time. Once again, your final score, Blue Devils 75, Titans 47.
