I have >> testing testing. >> You know which one? We're trying to decide who's going to welcome you wonderful people out here. All right. Is it on? Oh, test test. And you guys, I'm obviously a lot taller than you. We'll go ahead. Oh, good. I got an empty chair. I can set my stuff. >> All right. >> We'll lower this a little bit because I don't think anyone's going to be quite >> We measured with our tall kids. >> Okay. All right. Never mind. I'll stop. See, my teachers love to tell me what to do, but that's okay. Welcome, welcome to our district spelling bee. So, we haven't had this, this is my eighth year here in Carlile. Very lucky to be here. I'm Miss Dear Wester. I'm principles of grade four, five, six. Um,
our spelling be coordinator is Miss Fischer, though. So, she's the one that put all this together. So, that's totally awesome. But I first came and I was like, why don't we have a spelling bee? Because I did 20 years in Dayton public and Dayton it was a big deal the spelling bee because at one time we had 28 elementaryaries. So at that point, the winner of the elementary spelling bees would then go to a big district spelling bee. So we know our school's smaller and we have prek12 in one building. But this is the model of the scripts national spelling bee. So we got all the information, all the words, all the directions from the national spelling bee. So we registered officially online and everything. So it is really cool. So scripts national spelling be
has grades 2 to eight compete against each other, which sometimes that blows people's mind. mean second grade up there with eighth grade. But that is the rules. That's the rules of the scripts national spelling bee. And so the winner of this spelling bee will get to represent our school in the regional spelling bee. And I don't have that exact date. I just know we send that information to them by January 30th. So the winner and their parents will definitely get all that information. And then whoever's the runner up has a very important rule. If something would happen with the winner, the runner up would then represent our school in the regional spelling bee. So, this is very exciting. So, these students are already winners as far as I'm concerned because they made it this far
and they won at their grade level for grades 2 to eight. So, give them a big round of applause already. [applause] They deserve it. And I do want to introduce our judges real quick. They're just going to put their hand up. Jennifer Goodwin does third grade title here. Been here forever. No, I'm just kidding. John Giles does eighth grade ELA. And then Britney Williams does sixth grade math. So those are judges. And Britney has the hard job of ringing a personnel. So just to practice, can you ring so everybody hears what that sounds like. All right. So if you hear that bell, students, that means you did misspell something wrong. So kind of I want to start with the rules a little bit so we're all clear because it is a little tricky. I'm going
to give an easy example since I don't spell very well at all. But let's say if the word is um good. Okay. And let's say if the kids start spelling G O. Now, did they say any letters wrong yet? >> No. So, they can say, "Can I please start over?" And that would be okay because they haven't said any letters or anything wrong. But let's say if they start out spelling it G U. Yeah, that's right away. We know they spelled a letter wrong, they will get buzzed out. So once you start spelling, students, it's very important to think about it. Don't rush and start spelling if you're not sure what your word is. Now, we're very lucky to have Miss Janice Trude as our pronouncer today. Give her a big round of applause. She's
been studying just as hard as the students to make sure she pronounces these words correctly. As the pronouncer, she does have a lot of power and a big big job. The students are allowed to ask her to repeat the word as many times as they want it repeated. So remember that students, if you're not sure what the word is, you're allowed to ask her for the definition. Remember, you're allowed to ask her to use it in a sentence. You're allowed to ask her the part of speech. Okay? So that's the three things you're allowed to ask her. So remember that if you're not sure. So again, if there's any controversy, our judges kind of have the final say and we'll be as fair as we can. Um I'm going to be honest with you, we've
never done this since I've been here. We're not quite sure how long it's going to last and how many rounds we're going to have. So, we're going to kind of play that by ear. We did say um we know our side dismisses at 3:00. We know middle school parents that are here, we know it's going to go after their bell time, but about 10 till 3 or so, if we have a lot of students up there, we'll probably have to finish around and then maybe finish this, I hate to say it, sometime next week. We're kind of lucky we have a couple weeks. Our winner doesn't have to be submitted till January 30th. So, that's basically the rules. Now, when we get down to two spellers, the rules can change just a little bit, but
we'll talk about that when we get down to two spellers. So, and I think we're ready to get started. All right. And let me get my stuff out of lure. >> Could I have a definition, please? Andrew hopes that his advertised sale will lure people to his shop. >> Oh, to attract, to entice, to invite. >> L U R E Forest. >> F O R E S T. >> Spinning. >> What? 011tell the audience how they randomly one through 40. We didn't put them in grade level order. We used a random generator to make it fair because we know obviously the words get harder as they progress. So whatever number they were 1 to 40 was kind of just lucky how they ended up getting placed. So I kind of want to let the audience know that too. And we're just going to shift guys. You can stay in order. You can just shift over. You can shift over after each round. We're kind of going to shift over. The key is to stay in order. Don't do anything yet till I tell you guys. We're shift over now. You honey, you two. Number 15 and 16 come to the front. There's a room up here now. >> Yeah. >>

Caroline, good job, Caroline. Great. If you can come up and then um 28, you'll come over here. >> And then Trevor of course side. We're just kind of the key to stay in order. So this is important. 28 29 then 30 then 31 you'll come up here. Yep. And then 33. Jaden, you'll come over there. Then Logan, you're right. You'll come up over here, honey. 020round three. Great job. [applause] >> Now we're down to four. Give our top four a big round of applause. And I think our grade levels we have I think it's two fifth grade. What grade are you now calling? Eighth. >> Eighth and a sixth grader. So all mixed up. Kind of cool. So this does begin now. Round seven. Khaki, >> could you please repeat the word >> khaki? 021T I G O. Guttural. >> Can you please repeat the word >> guttural? >> Can you use it in a sentence? >> Guttural consonants posed a problem for Jasmine in German class. >> G U T E R. This is where I should have stopped. I'm sorry. But that that's still your word, but let me tell you. >> Yeah. So, yeah, you're you're not out of it yet. So, have a seat. Yeah. All right. So, I should have stopped it after three. We know Morgan Barnes is going to end up third place for sure. So, give Morgan Barnes a big round of applause. She was contestant one. And I do want to remind everyone, we don't make up the list. We don't put them in order. We print them out from the script's national spelling be
website. So I would say sometimes I think that the words get hard and they seem like they get easy again and get hard, but we have nothing to do with that. So when it gets down to two though, this is how it works. And so judges, you may may need to listen to because we didn't really make this very clear at the beginning. So the word that Addie got wrong, Grace would have to spell that word correctly and the next word on the list to be the winner. So that's kind of how it goes. Now, if Grace gets that word wrong, then Miss Truit, you just go to the next word on the list and keep going. So, to be the winner, basically to be the winner, you kind of got to get two words
correctly in a row. You got to get the word they misspelled correct and then the next word on the list. So, it can be a little confusing. So, I'm going to kind of stop counting rounds and it'll just go back and forth because we know we've gotten pretty far. So, this is pretty awesome. So, Grace, she'll say what Add's word was again. And in fact, why don't you both just both Well, it kind of be nerve-racking if you both stand up here, but just sit kind of right there. >> Guttural. G u t u r a l. >> And now to be the winner, Grace, you have to get the next word on the list correct. >> Courier. C O U R I E R. [applause] All right. And you're runner up. You got to
do an important job. All right. So, give them a big round of applause. And I want all the contestants to come back up on stage. Everyone come back in order. All of you are getting a great certificate. This was awesome. And we can learn from it. This is our first year doing it. So, any suggestions, parents? Not real mean, but you can definitely send them to me because it does get a little nerve-wracking. I would have got out in the first round, students. I was horrible at a spelling bee. You want to come up again. Be very proud. tried very hard. You really did. So, I will say everyone gets a certificate for participating. You got them something else, Miss Fischer, right? >> Yeah. It's a coupon for a free dessert at BJ's Brew House.
>> Free dessert. I love dessert, but yeah. And then the winner, um, Grace will end up getting a trophy with her name on it. Obviously, we didn't know who's going to win, so she don't have it yet. It should be ready in a couple weeks. And second and third place will also get a um a little bit of a bigger prize. But everyone does get a certificate. So we'll start calling your names up to get your participation certificate. >> Brooks Parker. [applause] >> Um are you allowed to go back to your class? You can't wait to learn again. You can wait till every True wants to do pictures. >> We'll find you a couple pictures. Mr. if you don't mind maybe helping take pictures. I forgot one. >> Is Camden still down there? >> I
think it's Camden still up here. >> Is Cam No other >> Camden Tuttle? Yeah. >> Camden Tuttle. >> Yay. [applause] >> Good job, Camden. >> Nora Sturgis. tell the grade level. 029Morgan Barn. Stand up. [applause] And then Addie Gman, our runner up. A very important. >> And then first place, Trace Snider. >> [cheering] [applause] >> Again, I do want to thank all the parents, families came. Thanks to our judges. Give them a big round of applause. That's a hard job to do. Give Miss Tru a big round of applause. That's really a hard job to do. And then, of course, Miss Fiser for arranging all this. Give her a big round of applause. And we can't forget the man behind the scenes, Mr. Hammock, for making it all work. Thank you, Mr. Hammock. And I do also want to thank Mr. Fischer, our superintendent, because he let us do this again, even though he's not in here now, give our superintendent a big round of applause for
letting us bring this back. So that is truly a good thing. So the way we're going to work this, obviously students on my side, if your parents are not here and you're ready to go back to class, you can go back on your own now. Oh, we want a picture. Never mind. Miss Truit's going to take some pictures. So come on up, Miss Truit. I'm not good with pictures. It's already
