well good evening everyone I'd like to call this Monday March 20th 2023 regular meeting of the Lakewood Board of Education to order the board previously met in uh executive session for the consideration of the employment of public employees and have returned to our general session with that would you join me in the pledge I pledge allegiance and next we have the adoption of the agenda I move we adopt the agenda with one modification of the removing section L9 up into the superintendent's report I believe great it has been moved with that Amendment uh a second second it's been moved and seconded Mr ziemann the role Mr Catalan aye Ms Bibi aye Ms katzenberger aye Ms Shaughnessy aye thank you and with that um the superintendent's report Mrs nedwicki good evening again president kale 's president
Bibi distinguished board members I would first like to welcome up Miss Joy Morgan our principal of Lakewood High School she has a building update and recognization reckon easier said than done star student for tonight very good thank you thank you superintendent nitzwicki Treasurer Seaman president Callahan vice president Bibi esteemed board members we're here tonight to feature our star student first and then we'll move into our presentation for our building so for our star student I would like to bring up Mrs Bridget furstenberger thank you there she is good evening um I would like to ask Miss Amasia Gorman to please come up with me to the podium foreign [Music] [Applause] I had the privilege of working with Amasia beginning in her sophomore year when I was still the house two principal and during a major
sophomore year we had a lot of discussion about personal growth and what it means to have a growth mindset I'm excited to stand up here before you tonight to tell you that um Amasia has exercised that personal growth during her junior year she joined the medical office Management program and will be graduating in June with her Microsoft PowerPoint in Microsoft Word credentials she has also participated in H2O and then um she's also participated in Special Olympics which you'll learn more about tonight but um she is respected and well liked by all of her peers and by the staff that work with that program and once she graduates in June Amasia is going to go to Tri-C to study nursing with the hopes of becoming a traveling nurse so our star student is Miss Amasia Gorman
thank you and amazing on behalf of the board I have this recognition for you congratulations it was great to hear about all of your successes you make us proud so is there anybody here with you tonight you'd like to introduce my dad my little brother and wonderful again congratulations on behalf of the board if any of the parents want to come take photographs you can you can come up and take photographs if you like [Music] it's fun to have [Laughter] congratulations okay so we know that we've um worked this year with the new uh vision of a Lakewood educator so one of the things that um we have done this year at Lakewood High School is brought back our peer mediation program so this was a program that was started in the late 1990s by
Gail meinke who is a former LHS teacher uh the peer mediation program was taken over by Miss Lauren Flynn who's one of our current social studies teachers and actually Gail was Lauren's Mentor when Lauren first started teaching at Lakewood High School um and the reason why we brought this program back is it's an alternative to discipline and a productive way to help students in solving their conflict so we noticed that students were really struggling to communicate effectively once we came back in person after the pandemic and so that's why we decided to bring it back it also works very well with our vision of an educator initiative our vision of a graduate initiative and then our diversity equity and inclusion practices so again we had a demonstrated need for it um our mediators our student
mediators were nominated by our Lakewood High School faculty and staff we did a one-day training with 34 students back in August which included Conflict Management the mediation process and then students actually practiced the mediation so that they would be ready to rock and roll once we started having a need for it when the school year began so the expectations for the different mediations are that students have to be respectful they have to stay seated they cannot name call and then they have to use appropriate language during each mediation each student tells his or her side of the story they come to an agreement and then actually sign a contract based on that agreement one of the things that is nice about this process is let's say we put an agreement into place and sign off
on that contract we then enact that contract if it's not working we can come back to the table to kind of reassess what you know tweaks we need to make in order to make our relationship successful so anybody can send in a referral for mediation so students can nominate each other counselors teachers and administrators our house principals are using um this quite a bit when they're receiving office referrals rather than assigning A detention or a Saturday school they can recommend that a student go to mediation they're certainly not forced into it but it's just an option for them and then again Miss Lauren Flynn is our advisor unfortunately she couldn't be here this evening but she arranges the mediation based on students schedules we try to not pull students out of classes so if there's
a lunch or a study hall we try to work around to that and she's the one who makes all of the arrangements all right and at this time I'm going to turn it back over to Mrs Morgan so one of the things that I love about the peer mediation program and some of the things that we're going to feature are really the collaborative things that I see in this building so being new and being in such a large building it's interesting to see what's going on um so peer mediation is one of those pieces that comes together where everybody's collaborating um a few other things that we've seen this year in terms of collaboration that we're extremely proud of Dana Hanson one of our art teachers had been collaborating all year with students from Brecksville
Broadview Heights High School they were doing it via Zoom with her AP classes and they were critiquing work to submit for different Awards and things like that so they were able to finally take a field trip and collaborate in person with those students and have some really exciting outcomes in fact some of our students did just receive some awards that they submitted to so that was very exciting another program or another thing that we had happen is our AP environmental students our bio students parents alumni with Rita Chata and Ann pesta and they were so excited I feel like this was like science excited um they were able to join something called trout in the classroom program and they were given a 60 gallon water tank in the classroom where they talked to me about
the water filtration and how this was going to work but they received these trout eggs and the students were able to raise them from eggs to they call them fingerling stage two to four inches and then what they did is they went down to the emerald necklace Marina in early March and they were able to release them they even checked the pH of the water to make sure it was safe for the trout and it was really exciting but I got to hear a lot about the trout and the tank and I would occasionally get pictures on Fridays giving me a nice weekend from the trout babies so it was really exciting next I would like to call up our teachers from our miles unit as well as one of our English teachers and one
of our students to discuss our Special Olympics Unified sports and how they are collaborating to make this happen foreign I just wanted to take a minute to introduce Katie Spees is a John Ed English teacher in the building Sarah Sanji and myself just David we're two of the miles unit teachers um two of our other teachers couldn't be here tonight but they help us collaborate on this Special Olympics Unified sports which is new to us it's we started it last year and it is an amazing program where our students get to collaborate with general education peers to participate in competitive sporting events such as basketball flag football track and field my forgetting one so far and soccer um and it has been really seeing the students get medals we get t-shirts they compete with students
from other schools and it really is so authentic and so cool to collaborate with these peers um so we have but we're also hosting a track and field event this spring so that's really exciting we hosted it last spring and the track team pitched in and helped us so it really is just collaboration across the entire building which is the coolest and it's been really great to see our students kids are saying hi to them in the hallway and kids are taking pictures with them at winter formal and just noticing them and recognizing them and it has been the coolest experience there's some more pictures of our events we even have like official Lakewood jerseys that the Special Olympics organization gave us we've done clinics with the Browns and the Cavs organizations so it has
been just the coolest there's some recent things that we did that was last week we were with um over at Case Western okay Mr streets is our kind of our social media coordinator so if you're on Facebook we're at Miles LHS on Facebook and he handles all that and he's somehow linked a really cool video um but while we're looking for that we'll also chat quickly we started a bus buddies chapter in conjunction with Special Olympics um this year and that is an after school club that pairs typical peers with students in special ed to do fun things like play games and hopefully go on some field trips um so we're just really excited to be part of the school and to collaborate with Miss fees and her students and our peers right here I
think you guys have enjoyed it Rhys always responds put me in for everything so I think he likes it yep but thank you so much and if you're free in the spring check us out on Facebook and come watch our track and field event [Applause] so what I like about Special Olympics is that like every time I do it I just get to interact with the kids and just meet like meet with them and experience even in the hallways like she said I always just talk to them and kind of create a bond with them and it just makes me happy like even playing flag football and track I've done all of it and I just love it like just makes me really happy uh what I what I like about it is um like
the the kids at school like uh like like six period I think it is they always go to like the gym and like play basketball and like sometimes they're like always like playing on one hoop together and like no one else is really like playing with them but I like this because like we get like a bunch of kids and we go to like these schools and we play basketball with them and then we like form relationships with them and then from there we see them like in the school and then everyone starts to like sometimes everyone starts to like playing I don't know it's just fun to like give them an experience of like playing basketball and like last week like we did some stuff with like the Cavs and everyone went crazy for
Mr CeCe so but I I just think it's a fun experience to give them and yeah that's that's what I've got time [Applause] you want to perfect um reason a major were my students last year so I'll talk a little bit about how we got started with kind of collaborating but bus buddies was um Rachel bonsee and I spoke last year about trying to get something going and she really like this was her passion project last year and I was so happy to support and be with her on it um and that's basically just a it's a group that we have a little club and it's between our miles unit and special education students as well as general education students so it's a National Organization you guys may have seen I mean there's a couple
like NFL players who have made that kind of like their organization they do when they get the award for service but it's a national organization that helps to create authentic social experiences for students and special ad in their typical peers it is awesome because it really goes hand in hand with what we're doing with Special Olympics so a lot of the faces are familiar but it's not so much about like kicking a soccer ball throwing a basketball like we are doing board games and we're gonna do a softball game this year and as we continue this kind of collaboration with each other this group we're hoping to do even more both in and out of the school and really make this something where maybe one day we have like we talked about a dance right
it's just an opportunity for there to be even more friendships fostered and a school where I think sometimes we feel a little bit isolated in our different hallways so this is a really cool opportunity for all the kids um and then this is where I think that was a photo taken a couple weeks ago but last year uh Jess David was subbing subbing in my classroom for a co-teacher and she asked me if my students would ever want to come down and just hang out with the students in the miles unit I'm totally thrilled said absolutely so every other Friday I took a class down and we just got to know each other we hung out we played games we've tried to kind of evolve into a little more um content as well so like
we went to a poetry Cafe I took my fifth period down to a poetry Cafe and we got to listen to and watch the students they use like their culminating project they got to read poetry loud it was awesome and then my students last week were acting out different acts of Macbeth and so we of course need an audience if it's going to be a play and so that's just been really cool it's not just hanging out on Fridays anymore it's like hey now we know like if we're doing something and we want our audience we've got the perfect group of humans and students that are just going to be so cool and supportive and we're there for them too is there anything else cool yeah thanks guys do you have any questions for us
foreign think we're all set no I know it's just there's a lot so much exciting going on it's just really it's really interesting I I appreciate just the variety of the presentations thank you and I appreciate it I would just say that having the students I mean there's winning on both sides I mean there's an expansion of our world when we let other people and that we wouldn't normally maybe hang out with definitely and you learn so much so it's just a benefit to everyone that was an artfully said but you know what I mean okay well and I also appreciate the uh the way the teachers are trying to find ways to collaborate with each other because I think that that's a great thing for the students to see in a sort of to
be like social studies in English like we're really trying to figure out what yeah I think one of the things that we constantly talk about is to ensure that everyone has a sense of belonging no matter you know what what you're really good at what you're not good at what friends you usually hang with which ones you usually don't and this is a great opportunity I think our students for being spearheading that because a sense of belonging everyone should belong and everyone should have an opportunity to have experiences that they enjoy doing so appreciate you modeling this all of our teachers for doing that to ensure kids feel good about being here at Lakewood city schools thank you next day would it like to invite Dr Palumbo up and Mrs spies has a special award
today so this is actually a coincidence um but um I stand in front of you tonight to do our educator Spotlight and she's already up here so I told her to stay um like many of our Educators Lakewood High School English teacher Katie Spees strives to inject the right amount of rigor and expectation into her classroom she believes in creating a classroom environment that emphasizes empathy communication collaboration inclusivity and community and works hard to Foster that these competencies are most evident in her collaborative work with the staff and students in the miles program as you just heard since last school year Acadian and her students have been building relationships with the mile students by spending class together every other Friday and getting to know each other through talking board games and other activities Katie was
instrumental in the Special Olympics event held at Lakewood High School last spring where her students were matched with a miles buddy to participate in events as was earlier shared Katie's class recently supported the mile students in performing their classes poetry Cafe and in turn the mile students joined Mrs spies students in acting out and being the audience while Mississippi students acted out scenes from Macbeth that students had reimagined with their own Modern Day spin for Katie the community building and modeling empathy that this ensures that students feel seen heard and cared for so they can grow both in and out of the classroom she extends that sentiment to her work with the buildings diversity Equity inclusion and belonging committee and the Lakewood High School peer mediation group as well as the best buddies program which
brings typical and neurodivergent students together Katie is one of the staff members that has stood out for Lakewood High School principal Joy Morgan in her first year at Lakewood High School she said Katie brings an even voice an open perspective and a strong work ethic each day to Lakewood High School she is an asset to both staff and students and we are thankful to have her at Lakewood High School principal Morgan said Katie thank you so much for the ways that you embrace our vision of a Lakewood educator and that you go above and beyond for our students and Katie on behalf of the board I have this recognition which you're certainly deserving of as we just heard so uh on behalf of my colleagues thanks for all you do congratulations [Applause] yes come on
thank you yeah she's even including Joy thank you Dr Palumbo Katie it seemed like you did your own little intro but appreciate all you do for the students that is great and finally I just wanted to again share with the board as I usually do I did receive some Communications regarding the Elementary schedule there are still some miscommunications out there unfortunately and you know as you know they're you know we're going to continue to be proud of our arts and our music Community but it does need to be said that no jobs are being lost over this funding has not been cut at all from the programming instrumental music program so instrumental will still be at fifth grade that has not changed uh and again it was just an opportunity to ensure we could provide
more classroom time for our teachers to add physical education year round instead of only three quarters our we only had for one quarter a year students this year will or this coming year will receive in the new schedule as we're moving forward they will have physical education every week music every week uh P um art digital literacy which is being shortcut a little bit that's Library time which they didn't have as part of their special and information and researching time in libraries in conjunction with the classroom teacher and of course our stem education so again I I do try to combat some of the shortcomings of conversations that have occurred and I apologize for that as I know that the presentation that Mr OST did for us a few months probably a couple months ago
or a month ago really does explain exactly what the co-facilitated committee of many Educators at the elementary and administrators in those areas worked on so thank you is that presentation available online yes for anybody that wants to see it how would they access that um I can't picture where I have it online uh but what we could do is put it on the front page to ensure it is there yeah I think that'd be a good idea thank you and that concludes the superintendent's report thank you Mrs nedswicki oh I think we forgot one I'm gonna take that back because and I know that Mr um uh so I welcome you to the podium please we had moved an agenda item up uh for Mr Paul Porter to be a new member of the sea
Rec committee would you like him to speak first should we take action on it and then have Mr Zigman speak or Mr zumie go right ahead you want to take action first yeah all right okay we have a resolution first I should say that uh while the Lakewood Library has its own board of of trustees and it the appointment of of members of that Library board is the responsibility oh we're talking Tom I'm so sorry and you're standing right there okay same idea I thought okay that the board of education is responsible for for appointing to both the library board and the commission and and right now we're talking about the Lakewood community recreation and education commission uh we have a member of that commission that resigned and the commission has been looking for a
replacement uh Mr Paul Porter I'm sure Tom is going to Mr Zigman is going to give us the information about his background and we've been asked to approve him as a member of the Lakewood recognition thank you Mrs Bibi good evening everyone second in a vote on that oh so you need a vote in a second um so it has been moved and I will second that second okay and with that um we would ask for Mr Zigman I'm sorry Mr Seaman do we need a roll call we'll go ahead and do one okay Mr Callahan aye Ms BB aye Ms casenberger aye Mr Shaughnessy aye thank you the motion carries Mr Zigman thank you for joining us thank you president Calhan uh good evening everyone and um uh superintendy's Wiki and Treasurer Zeeman president
Callahan and board members good evening and thanks for letting me uh speak this evening um my name is Tom Zigman and um I'm the president right now of the Lakewood community recreation and education commission we call it C Rick and it's a volunteer citizens advisory commission appointed and governed by the Lakewood Board of Education and as a volunteer citizen commission we provide Direction and innovative ideas to the community recreation and education department it used to be called Rec but it's how something a little different that will meet the needs especially of our youth and adult communities and to ensure growth access continuous learning opportunities and safe environment of the community recreation education resources once again we're just volunteers we support the Lakewood recreation education Department's vision to create an environment which will provide a well-rounded
positive experience for our youth and adult participants through education and Recreation opportunities that enhance the community at large given all those words we do meet the used to meet the last Tuesday of every month when we meet the third Tuesday of every month and it's on the website our meeting tomorrow is on the website right after the Board of Education meeting and you're all welcome to come and communicate with us your ideas for Community Education Recreation um I have the honor this evening to um present Paul Porter Paul would you come up [Applause] while he's traversing up here he just got back from Cambodia and so we weren't sure if he would make it to the meeting so I just have a little dosage that I'm going to let Paul say a few words he's
been a member Paul has been a member of our subcommission the Youth Athletic commission for about four years and he um participated in all the zoom meetings we had Zoom meetings back then if you remember I'm probably the oldest guy here just wearing a mask but anyway um brings back a little memory huh and he's a parent and father of school-aged children in Lakewood city schools he's a youth coach and Paul if I forgot anything else just uh chime in he's a talented Professor a professional who works for the Cuyahoga County um Cuyahoga County Executive and one reason he has such great talent and will bring such resources to our commission um any with the creative ideas and to the rec staff and as they move forward to implement and there's going to be a
new strategic plan for our schools and community recreation education is part of that so we're excited to have Paul and he really relates a lot to Children adolescents teens adults and senior citizens here in Lakewood so Paul congratulations thank you very much thanks for the kind words and thanks everybody for giving me a moment to uh say a few words I appreciate the opportunity to be nominated to serve I've enjoyed my time serving on the Youth Athletic commission and you know as somebody who's tried to contribute to C rack through regular meetings as well as the process of revising the bylaws that was probably the most time consuming portion it's been nice to kind of see a little bit of inner workings of what goes on to support you know the recreation education department aside
from having volunteers as a coach and then you know being a parent of a couple of boys that have participated in numerous activities whether it's been baseball basketball flag football you name it they've done many of the different things um I'm hopeful that transitioning more from kind of that uh smaller committee role to being a member of the larger commission I can continue to engage on important issues and um hopefully have my voice heard you know as somebody who can actually vote on things instead of just being there to talk about them so thanks again and I'm happy to answer any questions that you guys might have about my nomination Mr Porter thank you so much for for being here uh you certainly will bring a lot to the Commission in those different roles uh
that that you that you have the Hat says as a parent and as a volunteer coach uh you certainly you're you're experiencing that you know in those capacities uh as well as your leadership uh with the counties you know you you so thank you for for stepping into this uh to this role and I'm sure we'll all benefit from it thank you for your commitment absolutely and one note I'd like to make and this is to cric as a whole as well as uh Leslie and the rest of her team um my new role new-ish I guess I've been in the role about a year now at the county has me attending County Council meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the evening so my attendance of past year has been
more missed than hit since I'm often tied up the last Tuesday of the month and c-rex willingness to uh look to switch to the third Tuesday of the month is a big help and it's encouraging that you know you guys are willing to make that switch in order to give me the opportunity to participate more fully so thanks for that well thank you thanks thank you very much and have a great evening everyone thank you and I have checked my notes that does conclude thank you uh with that we before we move into uh Communications and and then the consent agenda we could pause for a moment and excuse anybody that may want to um believe at this time of course you're all welcome to welcome to stay again Communications and then the consent agenda
to follow thank you all right and we now move to the communications thank you uh portion of the meeting and first any Board of Education member comments I'll turn to my colleagues uh well jump in first of all I'd like to thank superintendent Ned zwicki for referring to the videotape the online resource for the presentation that was on February 21st at the meeting that was co-led by our curriculum director Stephen Austin Jamie Holland Jesse Holland one of those Helens um but yeah I it was really great presentation and as I've received questions and inquiries about the changes in the Elementary schedule I've referred people to the presentation because it's it's difficult when people are when there's a lot of Word of Mouth out there even the most well-meaning people might not have all the facts
straight so I think it's great to go to the source and and really understand the process and you know how the decisions were made and the hard work of the committee that um that came to came up with a proposal for the element with the new structure for the elementary specials so as I said I've referred people to it anybody here or watching I would encourage you to look at that as well and just familiarize yourself with you know the the real process of what happened but that being said I've we you know I've received as I'm sure all of us have comments um both in person and through emails and and such many um in support of the uh the new structure of specials at the elementary level and many with some questions or
I've heard people say they were conflicted or concerned so um that's part of this the fact that Lakewood is you know our community members are involved and I think that's a good thing I welcome any questions or I'm happy to have a conversation with anybody I'm happy to see even you know regardless of how they speak about the issue tonight I'm happy to see people here who want to be involved and participate especially our younger people our students keep doing that that's really important to do and just make sure you go to the original source for your information as you move forward in life but uh thanks for being here and that's what I want to say Michael Linda you can go yeah the people tend to be blowing off digital literacy as being somehow
irrelevant or unimportant digital literacy includes just Library time and I've always thought that was important I love libraries and books Etc but and the importance of reading we all know about that but it's a much bigger thing it includes in in the elementary school I think this is so important safety online how do you keep yourself safe in a world that includes things like sexting and and and trafficking and preying on children how do you sort fact from fiction when there's so much available that isn't just the safety of something maybe like Wikipedia But there is there is information out there that children need to to know how to tell is this true is this not true and we as adults have problem with that and we need to teach our children how to use
the internet and the resources available safely because they're going to be doing it and they're going to be of other time there in middle school and high school they're going to be spending a lot of time on screens and they need to be safe and they knew how to keep and keep themselves safe and then you know just as a research tool as as a tool they're going to be using for the rest of their life I don't think we can say that digital literacy is not important and bless the hearts I know that the people in this room and everybody that I've talked to over the last several weeks is absolutely passionate about the music curriculum my son was in the Roadshow and sang in the Ohio State Men's glee club without rehearse without
additions because he came from Lakewood I've appreciated this program for the entire time I've been in this community and we are looking at the music curriculum to make sure we don't lose any of the things that our children need to know in music but we also need to make time and the time we have in elementary school is very limited we need also to teach reading you know Reading Writing arithmetic we need to teach the course The Core Curriculum and the day is not long enough to get every child an opportunity to do everything they want to do every day as much as we'd love to do that so that's all I've got to say for the moment thank you for listening thank you well that saves me from repeating for everyone but um I
wanted to start with commanding the group to put Anastasia on oh yeah it was a phenomenal and a phenomenal program we all of us have seen it we loved it um and I think it's a tribute to not only the musical the kids who sing marvelously in the the pit Orchestra was phenomenal but all the the students who did the I mean worked on costumes and sets and staging and it was a production that was worthy of clearly Beck Center or you know Playhouse Square we'll go there but it was just it was great and I wanted to congratulate everyone who was involved in that and then I just wanted to also recognize that we do receive a number of emails or calls and conversations um with people who have strong feelings about the music
program who are passionate about it and I recognize that it may be difficult to say that there is some time that will not be in music that is going to be spent in in art or in physical education or the other things that are important um but I really am disturbed by the fact that as in supporting music or disparaging these other um curriculum items that it's it's we don't have to tear something down to build up a program that we like we can value music but there are many children who are just as hungry to be able to do something with their hands and create a piece of art as as sing and there are just as many students who can go to stem and be in a group kids were so isolated during
covid they were so separate they want to be together working on projects together that they can have something that runs so all these are important and I it's an individual opinion if you think that one is more important than the others but educators are the group that came up with this plan they worked very hard I'm not an educator I'm a school board member I defer to people that know what students need at what point in their lives and so I would just ask that we all are a little Kinder about and don't tear down what is trying what we're trying to do because the music program here is valued it's treasured it's supported it's financially supported and so if we all work together we'll keep the music program strong but we'll give kids a
chance and I guarantee every child different children are going to go home and say my favorite day of the week I went to stem or my favorite day of the week I went to library and guess what I did or I went to music or I in fifth grade they'll have two music classes I I played my instrument it's all going to be there and every child is going to be engaged and belong as the superintendent mentioned earlier and their interests may change over the years but that's what specials are for they're to give kids an opportunity to see what they like what they're good at and they can be good at everything or at one thing but it's there for them so in any event my cohort members had already said most of that
thank you Mrs Shaughnessy and and to my uh other colleagues as well um at the risk of redundancy I just wanted to point out or again show my appreciation to the co-facilitated committee that worked so hard on this um and to appreciate their leadership their expertise um Educators and administrators uh the some of as I've said before some of the best and brightest Minds in the district and as Mrs Shaughnessy says I'm you know I'm I too I'm not a curriculum expert um and I want to commend those who who worked on this as well as the superintendent and and our our cabinet um Stephen OST our director of teaching and learning who who have been very responsive to and excellent communicators on the questions that have come up and so I would again encourage
people to um to indeed watch the the presentation that has uh already uh taken place um but if there are additional questions as I've said before the the superintendent um is is a great resource on them as as are our other administrators um with that I would move into the public comment portion um I would remind we'll call you up uh if we remind the audience that we do ask that you limit your comments to three minutes um as my colleagues have said we're certainly glad that you are here and appreciate your participation your attendance um if you wouldn't mind just stating your street and your city of residence and our first speaker is Michael drops Michael drops like when Marlow Avenue um I was reading the article in the paper which everybody said we
need to go look at the other one but I agree with Mrs Shaughnessy the music program is important so are all the other important programs and if we really really want to help education let's get a hold of our governor our Board of State Board of Education the one the governor's trying to take over the legislature and let's get rid of all this testing that means nothing to the district but takes a lot of time that could be used for stem and all the other stuff testing we've done it for decades now and we still don't doesn't tell us anything we already don't know so why do we keep doing something that's wrong and why do we have a legislature and all that that tells education what they need to do when they're not Educators
themselves it's as Michelle said it's not we're not the board isn't Educators I'm not an educator I'm just a senior citizen I want those digital learning kids to be able to learn how to do that so they can show me how to be safe on the internet but let's let the Educators educate the kids and stop all this baloney that goes on because we have all this testing program but we don't test all the schools you know so what's the point of the program so keep up the good work and the only nice thing about having this meeting is just shaking it up and we got parents in the audience something we don't have at a board meeting and that's the only good thing of this is that we get some attendance and we need
the parents to show up every once in a while just to make sure the district is on top of what they're doing and I have no complaints other than but digital learning I could use them you got any fourth graders or somebody that might help out thank you thank you Mr drops and next we have Chris Moran evening my name is Chris Morin and I live on Virginia Avenue in addition to being a resident of our community and a father of a child currently enrolled in our preschool program at Taft I'm a music educator with the Bachelors of music from Bowling Green State University a master of master of arts in the field of music education from Case Western Reserve University and 19 years of teaching experience having taught in schools to utilize stem I
have some concerns regarding how Lakewood city schools are introducing it to the elementary schools while reviewing the proposal for next school year I noticed stem listed as a special my understanding is stem is not a special like music art and physical education but a teaching philosophy to integrates science technology engineering and Mathematics into a single cross-disciplinary program hope you'll provide some clarification on your proposal does the proposed plan mean our children will be limited to learning math and science one day a week or will your proposed stem classes be in addition to math and science curriculums taught by classroom teachers if the latter how would these curriculums work together my wife and I are also curious who will be teaching stem and how the district will be providing training for all teachers to implement the
stem methodology the second area I'd like to comment on is the unique music offerings the Educators and District have created and now considering restructuring as an educator and as a citizen of Lakewood I know how special the music programs are here the number of students in various music programs combined with the extraordinary skilled extraordinarily skilled teachers who work with them has led to one-of-a-kind music programming that reflects who we are as a community this was a major factor in our family's decision to purchase our home here and to send our child to Lakewood city schools I implore you to reconsider reducing the amount of Music students yeah receive and encourage you to consider the benefits of increasing the amount of time for music education numerous studies organizations such as the Ohio music Education Association and
the National Association for music education and teachers like my wife and I are confident that music education delivered at a high level like what we see in Lakewood helps to develop students into exactly what this District aspires to participation in music encourages students to develop their communication and collaboration skills music classrooms are the home of growth mindset if you want proof attend the first and last rehearsal of any concert cycle you will see growth mindset in action musicians are active in our community just think about what Memorial Day the Fourth of July and light up Lakewood would be without our musicians there musicians are some of the most empathetic students in our schools and are creative and critical thinkers they check all six boxes of your vision of a Lakewood graduate without blinking AI because
these qualities are necessary to be successful in music this is something other disciplines struggle to achieve and we do it we're having a great time and making friendships to last a lifetime hope you'll give greater consideration to how you'll be introducing stem and expend expanding the music offerings in Lakewood city schools finding the balance between integrating the stem teaching philosophy and expanding music education offerings will undoubtedly help you accomplish your vision and goals for Lakewood city schools thank you for your time thank you next we have Cassie awk uh good evening my name is cassiak I live on Lake Avenue and I would like to take a few moments to discuss the impact of the music and athletic programs personally on who I was who I am and who I will be my liquid City
Schools career started at Lincoln Elementary School from the grades kindergarten through fifth grade though I do not remember clearly every day or every little detail of every classroom I do remember one thing we were a community built on around the growth of everyone not just a select group of students there were clubs at Lincoln that were the start of something better the girls on the Roman club run by Miss Hennessy the coding Club started by Mr maguan and the Lincoln singers ran by many amazing choir directors each of these clubs set the standard to which we could do anything we set our minds to I remember learning how to play the recorder through Recorder Karate playing Hot Cross Buns on the small marinas to learn rhythms I remember standing on the risers and singing We
Are the Champions at the spring concert to celebrate my class finishing the fifth grade the sense of accomplishment empowered me to want to continue in music as it was something unlike anything I'd ever experienced before currently I am a senior at Lakewood High School I have taken various advanced placement courses earned Varsity letters within track and field and marching band and among many other students gotten truly involved in the Lakewood High School community and over the past four years the opportunities and Community have not changed there have been countless opportunities specifically made for all types of students ranging from the academics like a National Honor Society the Fine Arts as the liquid project and the sports program starting at the girls wrestling team that continues to qualify for regional and state competitions or a co-ed
lacrosse team forming just last year but looking at the big picture we as students have seen the district push for the vision of a liquid graduate initiative in the class of 2023 is one of the first few classes to who is a product of this initiative there are six Target points of this initiative creative in critical thinking communication collaboration growth mindset Global awareness and citizenship and empathy each and every Point has further been developed through the sports and Performing Arts programs that we currently have students present critical and creative thinking when working towards piecing each other concerts and Performing multiple times throughout a school year along with their current course loads in games of basketball or football or volleyball students have to think critically and quickly to in order to earn points for their teams
communication and collaboration are developed in scenarios such as working with directors and coaches almost every day working alongside teammates and section members to build a community and grow as individuals I'm not speaking to you tonight as a student but as the chair of the Lakewood Youth Council as well and as a future alumni of this these amazing programs Lakewood is home to one of the best and diverse music programs in the area and there are very few districts that share these same opportunities Nationwide this drastic change will not only weaken the student involvements of Athletics and music disciplines but if this schedule enters Elementary School students will lose vital and exposure to niches that will produce creative and competent students thank you thank you next we have Joshua Micah hello sorry um I would just
like to hit on a couple points that were have brought up been brought up in the past and I think when it comes to the issue of digital literacy it is just being growing up in the age of the internet the internet is evolving constantly and I think a course that would be so heavily regulated I would assume and set on certain points would lose its value over time which is unfortunate but I just don't think a digital literacy um putting that into our elementary schools would be super helpful I think over time and I think it should be something that is brought up in the home especially as people have different circumstances and I think as well it's been brought up by Educators that have spoken at the last meeting there's a difference between
just a lot of people that like music and the fact that music is just very helpful in brain development I think we can't ignore this when it's brought up in the future and I think as well that again when we're going to building Lakewood graduates you really want people who I don't know started off with a good foundation and I know that the board has done a lot of good for the Lakewood school district and I can only imagine the amount of time that was poured into that committee that created that wonderful presentation but I'm just worried about how future children that would pass through the school district would really have to face with just not having the experience that a lot of us had I guess and you can tell that Lakewood is very
passionate about our music based on the people that show up to these meetings and uh just on the topic of socialization as well music is just so intrinsically like creative you have to work with the people around you and I think that cooperation into creating a better product is also just very important I guess and um when it comes to a more personal note while I'm a freshman in college and I graduated last year and I even though I chose to go on a history path music still plays a very large part of my life and like whether it's playing gigs or playing in the band at Cleveland State and I can really attribute this all the way back to just going to Hayes Elementary and just picking up on that and just having a
lot of great band directors in the future and I don't know I think a lot of people are just worried about what the future could hold for music at Lakewood and I understand it's not um I guess extensive changes that are being made but we should embrace what people love about Lakewood which is our music department and I think any sort of cuts for that would be lead to a negative outcome thank you next we have Abby Norman and if again if you all wouldn't mind staying your street and uh city of residence we would appreciate it I'm I live on West 227th Street in Fairview Park but I'm a Lakewood alumni and my family grew up here so I'm familiar I also am a former liquid City Schools employee I used to work at
Roosevelt Elementary School as their music teacher before their actual music teacher came back from maternity leave hey Renee um so I just I also now work in Lorraine City Schools as their music teacher um at two elementary schools and I just wanted to come and let the board know about what I've seen and let the community know about what I've seen because as a few of you said you're not music curriculum experts and no one can expect you to be but I am someone who has gotten my hands dirty in rewriting some of the curriculum for Lakewood city schools and as well as participating in curriculum writing for Lorraine so with that being said Lorraine operates on a five-way rotation schedule at the elementary level offering music physical education art project lead the way which
is stem and dance each one day per week and at two elementary schools I serve over 500 students each week the schedule I currently teach in is very similar to the schedule that was proposed to the board a few weeks ago and I'm here to tell you that even though I have 45 minutes per week and liquid is proposing only 40. it's not enough time to teach a functional holistic well-rounded music curriculum Lakewood students currently have 100 minutes per week of music instruction and I like to highlight a few major results that you will see in your schools within the next five years if you proceed with the schedule as proposed and again I'm totally in support of all of the specials offerings but I just think there's a better way to achieve your goals
than by cutting the music program so what you will see is decrease participation in music programs hire specialist staff turnover because teacher teachers who are unable to become such a formative part of the school Community will not want to stay lowered ability and quality of Music performances and experiences low retention so like cognitively if there's a long time between classes for music it's going to reduce what the students remember from week to week and limit what they can learn um if there's too few experiences they're not going to fall in love with it okay lack of time to meet all grade level standards we're going to have to cut things it's just a fact decreased collaboration skills decreased growth mindset and increased shyness and reluctance to sing decreased self-esteem fewer World music and exploration opportunities
decreased ability to operate under stress decrease motor skills decreased critical listening skills lowered literacy because reading is inherently rhythmic and Musical and increa or decreased inclusion because students of all abilities are equally able to participate in a music class where they often find important means of self-expression and develop social skills um most importantly my ability to develop strong trusting relationships with my students has been significantly hindered at Lorraine because of how few minutes I spend with them so as a final note there are other ways to accomplish your goal of increasing the offerings so please do not rush this decision that will dismantle the amazing program that took our predecessors over 40 years to build the community doesn't support it the science doesn't support it and you shouldn't support it either because it comes in
a few times thank you so much everyone else thank you thank you Margie Hildebrandt you're a tough act to follow Abby my name is Marjorie Margie dusenberry Hildebrandt I'm a 2013 retired music teacher having taught in Lakewood 30 years Avon Lake as well I'm from a proud Lakewood Family parents class at 42 and 45 my siblings 66 me 68 brother 71 and sister 83. I'm the grandmother to six children in the Lakewood city schools one of whom is a graduate graduating this year who benefited from our wonderful art program and I can I sincerely appreciate that and cons hope that we do expand on it I'm here to share my disappointment in the actions already taken by this board because when I was hired my goal was to give back to the students the love
of Music my teachers had given me over the years and my father from the class of 42. when my students enter my room we sing songs we play games we read music we read books that have music we perform rhythms we dance we listen to music history music of the history we talk about composers we learn about how different families of instruments make their sound with vibrations from different mouthpieces and on and on our class could not function with cooperation built in um social emotional right in our classroom if sorry and we worked very hard at it it could not happen that kids weren't playing nicely doing that what they were supposed to the games would simply stop and they knew it music and Jim taught team taught dancing folk dancing square dancing line dancing
for dances from other countries hand holding was a part of that and they simply got used to it again social emotional my point is that music classes many things that help learning listening following directions history reading fluency matching pitch playing the instruments and on and on our classes satisfy everyone of the gardeners multiple um intelligence in addition Dr John fire Robin's extensive research on Early Childhood states that music in very early years from birth from birth creates Connections in the brain that is strongest up to ages 9 and 10. we should be adding more music to our preschool than taking it away from our elementary the schedule you have proposed will call to our program to fizzle out our choral program there is little time for just making music with only 33 classes there will
be no choir time in fifth grade is just instrumental you are not providing for God's given instrument The Voice the voice that everybody that uses it uses it for life it's not an instrument that you take out of the case and play and put it back I am saying that if you ignore vocal music the way it's being ignored what you are doing is you are going to prevent people from singing happy birthday thank you in the interest of time in I do apologize I I just I feel it's important for us to be consistent across the board um again thank you next we have Ryan Brown or so forgive me if I've mispronounced that thank you hello my name is Ryan Brown or so I am a parent of a of a Lakewood High
School graduate graduated two years ago Arturo or so and I live on Lake Avenue I'm not going to read my prepared documents um I'm gonna because so many points have been so beautifully articulated by some of the people in this room um I'm not from Ohio I'm not from Lakewood I teach at Oberlin College and I've lived in Oberlin for 17 years and I moved to Lakewood in 2017 for one reason one reason only I moved away from my workplace so I still teach at Oberlin for the program here in music for my son and he was able to complete his high school year here at Lakewood High School in the music program and now he's at the conservatory and he's studying composition I don't have family here I don't have relatives in Lakewood I
came for this one program because it was so extraordinary we still live here happily paying taxes and being a part of this community so I just wanted to again there's so many points that they've spoken about in terms of the value of music and art I teach film and media and I um in in the whole entire capacity of the human person in the community that we are in that the Arts and the music being incredibly important there what I would say here I'm going to go off script here is that one of the things that I see every time I walk around Lakewood is the celebration of the youth from the school district through music and I was just so surprised that it would even be considered to be taken to only you know
cutting sixteen sixty percent of the music instruction at this in this institution I mean in this in this District so I I'm I'm so surprised that you would even consider thinking of reducing the the the most beautiful part of this community um and and that being said it's um you know the ways in which as an educator myself with regard to digital uh literacy you know as soon as you create a curriculum for digital literacy it will be obsolete within five minutes because it's constantly changing as a filmmaker you know the trends are so fast you have to have sort of clusters there's different ways to to introduce digital literacy into your curriculum that's not taking time away um and so there's ways to bring in contemporary new people each semester each year to have
conversations now the last thing I'm going to say is be creative about how you bring in digital literacy and don't just you know take a block away from from music in the Arts and also don't dig in your heels around this this this project this this proposal you're listening to the community the community is is who these people who you're serving and clearly there's a huge request not to just get with the program and and change and and give up something that is such a treasure there's we all have these you know special things and and Lakewood the music program is very very special the Arts and Lakewood are special don't give it up just because you have some some people who created a curriculum that you haven't even tested thank you great great Cooper
indicated a maybe great would you like to speak hi I'm Greg Cooper uh Grace Avenue Lakewood I'm a parent my son Henry goes to Harrison um he has Miss Grant for music she's incredible I also teach here and I coach here in Lakewood uh I've kind of had my head in the sand for five months because it's been wrestling season and this is my first Monday that I have off and I'm here so this is pretty important uh I have a master's in curriculum instruction I was exposed to numerous studies in my in my time in college about the importance of music education my wife's also an educator one of the big reasons why we chose to live in Lakewood was how impressive the music program is here it's pretty remarkable so I was a
little confused when I watched some of the past meetings that you mentioned and saw that part of our process was looking at what other districts were doing I'm not really sure why we would want to make changes to our music curriculum to do what other districts are doing because I think our current music offerings are pretty unique and significantly different from other districts it's one of the things that attracted us about Lakewood um I've also not come across any information about stem or digital literacy and the impact that those subjects have on cognitive development it's pretty well document it's been mentioned in other meetings the impact music has again one of the reasons why we chose to move here and raise our kids here when I think about what's going to happen with my son's
music education like I said he is incredible teacher I was fortunate enough to watch some of the music lessons over Zoom when we were remote I started to feel a little bad about myself as a teacher because of just how rigorous and the high expectations that were in a Kindergarten music classroom and I think about from the teacher perspective trying to continue to do that on a one day a week process I I just I'm I don't know how I would do that as an educator to have that same level of rigor and high expectations if I'm only seeing my students once a week so I'm pretty concerned about that um yeah that's I'm just I'm a little I'm a little bewildered about how quickly this happened again wrestling season I had my head in
the sand I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention but I'm a little concerned about where we're headed also as a parent I'm pretty confident about handing handling digital literacy with my son at home and my daughter at home and and what what's safe on the internet I think that's something I can handle as a parent I think most parents would feel pretty confident doing that I am not qualified or confident in teaching music to my children again one of the main reasons why we chose to live here is because I felt like we were in really good hands with the music program so I'm a little I'm pretty concerned as a parent thank you appreciate it thank you a saskia Romeo um is a maybe would you like to speak and I apologize if I
mispronounced your name as well my shoes first um my name is saskia Romeo I'm a Lakewood resident and um I've lived here for 17 years I'm also a school counselor in a local District not Lakewood um actually Joy's former District in Westlake and I've been in education for 19 years formerly as a teacher um I cannot follow all the extremely erudite and impassioned things that everybody else before me have said and I listened in on some of the board meetings prior to this one but like the person who just spoke before me I'm a little bewildered I'm a little bit late to the game and I have not had a lot of Mondays free what I'd like to speak to is personal as a parent of three beautiful children in this District my youngest is
now a graduating senior and I can tell you that this is difficult because it's emotional for me my kids have been through some unusual circumstances and if it were not for the continuity and the time that two of my kids spend with their music educators they would have been lost in their education system and these were bright kids my kids are bright kids my eldest flew through school everything she touched turned to Gold she's just one of those kids my other two floundered they were lost and I can tell you I'm looking at the back of the room and around the room at the Educators and some of the educators are friends who went to school with a couple of my kids and there have been times where I felt like these were co-parents in
the ways that they were able to Mentor my children over the years and that's the thing I wanted to speak to tonight is it is very unique in a music program to have that kind of continuity that there is a team of Educators that is reaching all the way down from the from the most senior years of their educational experience all the way down into the elementary you know my son had to write all of these essays for college applications and scholarships and speak about leadership opportunities he's not really in any leadership roles and hasn't sought them out but that was a natural expectation in the Lakewood city schools music program is to develop as a leader because you are being watched you are naturally being put over and over and over again into a
mentoring role with the younger kids and that is quite unique to any music program but especially so in Lakewood I have heard the kids in my house over the last couple of months who have been paying attention and speaking about this issue and although I I am one of those people who has not looked at the source material yet I am understanding that this would be a 60 loss in total time at the elementary level that is very concerning to me so I have nothing else to add to that except if it weren't for the amount of time that was offered through that educational experience I don't know where my kids would be today thanks thank you next we have Colleen Clark Sutton good evening Colleen Clark Sutton I live on Clifton here in Lakewood
and you all are a very tough act to follow um some beautiful and impassioned thoughtful and researched comments I I stand here with a slightly different message or opinion I want to thank the board and the administration for their continued empathy energy and expertise on behalf of lakewood's children and our community in general I've now lived here 33 years I'm not one of those born raised lived died I came from the East side to believe it or not but I I am here to say on the record because there have been many many people who have come to talk about the need for the music program to be saved and protected and I do think that there are some numbers out there like the 60 reduction in curriculum music curriculum that are not factually correct
and we probably could use a little um tweaking of that information so that we get some some better numbers but I'm here to say on the record that I trust the Lakewood School District administration and School Board in their processes that they undertake to consider changes in the school um in the school system we are not a fly by the seat of your pants School District we haven't been I have been proud to be one of those community members on Committee Member on committees in the past and um I'm also the proud parent of children who benefited from the music program and I see a former music teacher there and um and art teachers and I value kids moving every week in phys Ed etc etc etc and we only have six hours in a
day and we need to feed them um and and so I just think that ah I just wanted another voice to be heard another perspective I know that there are some some quiet emails and phone conversations that are happening from parents who are supportive of the of the increase in phys Ed of the increase in art of the um possible excitement and opportunities for um for stem and digital literacy and keeping our kids safe there's just so much that we have to do and the the teacher chair of that committee is a woman of incredible integrity and creativity and expertise and she doesn't take her job lightly and Miss Jesse Holland and um and so if this is the research that she came up with and that the committee came up with I think it's
probably pretty good thank you [Applause] and finally we have Leah Campbell hi thank you for having my me speak my name is Leah I'm a junior at Lakewood High School I live on Landing Avenue and I play the tuba clarinet and saxophone in the Lakewood High School Wind Ensemble and in our jazz bands and I'm also involved in the Cleveland youth win Symphony I would not have been able to have this success in the Lakewood music program without the strong Foundation I built at Hayes Elementary School and Harding Middle School stem is important music is important Jim is important and art is important I'm not going to argue about any of that but will I what I will say is that this reduction of the music program will not allow students to build the foundation
that they need to be able to have success when playing an instrument our music programs are definitely going to suffer at the high school level countless Studies have shown that musical education helps improve math performance we've heard this from the other speakers but I can personally tell you as a Lakewood High School student I am currently taking a college credit plus college algebra and trigonometry and that is an advanced math course that LHS students can take for college credit from Tri-C everyone in that class played an instrument at some point in their school career and most of the students still do play an instrument I would say about 80 percent are still actively involved while this may be an anecdote it shows how our strong music program has built strong stem students at our own
Lakewood High School and here's a comment that goes for all of our specials what I feel is most concerning about this new schedule is how infrequently each special meets consistent practice is essential for real project in music and art as well as Sports and stem by reducing practice time we are without a doubt reducing the quality of the music program and every other program in Lakewood city schools what I feel Lakewood city schools is doing is that they are attempting to introduce so many specials that they aren't going to be able to do any of them well thank you for letting me speak thank you and thank you to everyone who spoke here this evening we appreciate your attendance your your participation in tonight's meeting we now move to the consent agenda portion of the
meeting these are items that were discussed at our previous at our first meeting in March and are now up for for a vote um and with that I would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda so we have a move by Mrs Shaughnessy and second Mrs katzenberger and this requires a roll call vote Mr Zeeman Mr Callahan aye Miss Bibi aye Miss kathenberger aye Mr shocking thank you and next we have Human Resources Mrs BB thank you we have a number of items an appointments special compensations Etc tonight um I'm going to take each of those sections as as one so I will first move to approve the certified appointments and special compensations do I have a second it's been moved and seconded all in favor aye aye any opposed that carries second item
is a classified personnel there are 11 actions eight appointments and three special compensations High move approval second that's been moved and seconded all in favor aye any opposed and that carries Okay the third one is certified athletic coaches and advisors non-employees we have three such actions and I move approval second and certified not employees moved and seconded all in favor aye any post thank you and then we have 10 appointments and these are all athletic coaches uh for the coming season and I move a point of classified athletic coaches and advisors non-employees 10 of them and I move approval second that has been moved and seconded all uh in favor aye aye any opposed that carries next okay and then finally we have reports for community recreation and education 33 in Aquatics it's summer obviously
coming up and one in athletics and again I move approval of that resolution second that has been moved and seconded all in favor aye any opposed thank you and I believe we have a few more resolutions here right then we have three resolutions [Music] our superintendent has agreed to an extended contract we've been very pleased with her performance and we're going to extend that contract so it what you'll see here is an amendment of the contract an amendment of supplemental Employment contract because she's also the superintendent of the West Shore Career Tech program and then an amendment of the two contracts and then the approval of the extension of the contract and I think we need to take those separately don't we Mr Seaman or can I do them together you can do them all
together can I do them all together okay and I move approval of the resolution to amend the employment contract to amend the supplemental Employment contract and to approve the extension of the employment contract of the superintendent second and those resolutions have been moved and seconded all in favor aye any post and they carry okay concludes my report thank you and next except that you are up again with other board business okay every so often we get things that have to be dealt with immediately because we've had resignations and we need to replace these people so the first item is uh an approval requested on one reading for a certified personnel's one leave of unpaid leave of absence and four resignations I move approval of that resolution on one reading second it's been moved in second
it requires a roll call vote Mr Zeeman Mr Callahan aye Ms BB aye Ms katzenberger aye Mr shauncey aye thank you in that series should add that includes Mr demiosity DiBiase uh resignation as the head of the Career Tech program for Lakewood schools he's founded another job and he's done such a wonderful job for us it'll be it's hard to lose him uh but so the next item is approval of a another resignation for classified personnel and a salary and pay rate adjustment and I move approval without resolution second that has been moved and seconded it also requires a roll call vote Mr Zeeman Mr Callahan aye Mr Speaker Miss casenberger aye Ms Shaughnessy aye thank you thank you athletic coach and advisor approval regusted again on one reading uh this resignation I move approval
of this second it's been moved and seconded Mr Zeeman the role Mr Callahan aye Ms Bibi aye Ms katzenberger aye Ms Shaughnessy aye okay and then the next also mine we have several programs for students uh out in the community working with getting vocational experience out in the community and this is one we have a community paced based Career Technical agreement between West Shore Career Tech education district and the O'Neill Health Care system and Bay Village we're asking approval of one reading it's a three-year agreement that provides community-based Career Technical experience for up to 10 West Shore students who participate in vocational exploration assessment and training in a real world environment students will not be paid for this experience and that there is a teacher and an aide who provides direct on-site supervision of the
student and the workplace so I move approval of this resolution on one reading second it has been moved and seconded Mr zema Mr Callahan aye Ms BB hi Ms casenberger aye Ms Shaughnessy aye and that motion carries and we will break for a moment from Mrs Bibi in turn two Mrs casenberger thank you um this is a resolution to approved filing of a complaint against Real Property approval is requested on one reading this is in response to in April 2022 the Ohio legislator legislature passed and the governor signed an amicus substitute house bill number 126 that requires Boards of Education before filing complaints with respect to the valuation of a real property parcel in their school district to adopt a resolution resolution authorizing such filing at a public meeting this is the full text of
the resolution will be in the supporting in the minutes and this is being requested approval on one reading second it's been moved and seconded Mr Zeeman uh Mr Callahan aye Miss Bibi aye Ms katzenberger aye Ms Shaughnessy aye and that resolution carry passes uh Mrs Bibi back team and this is the source of confusion earlier I like the rec committee the recognition Lakewood is also in charge of appointing uh members of the Lakewood Public Library Board of Trustees and uh we've had the public the public life excuse me my allergies are driving me nuts here tonight the Lakewood Public Library Board of Trustees has recommended the appointment of April Hoy to be a trustee of Lakewood Public Library to fill an unexpired seven-year term ending September 12 2023 in which case there'll be another appointment
but they've asked us to to appoint a pahoy and this is first reading so we'll be voting on this next meeting thank you thank you and is there any other business to come before the board I just did one request that maybe just because some of the incomplete information that people are working with maybe in another board meeting we could have the overview of the digital literacy program um which is way more than that actually yeah thank you and with that we'd entertain a motion to adjourn so moved second all in favor aye aye thank you the meeting has returned thank you all for coming foreign
