thorough search and interview process it's being recommended to you this evening that former lakewood high school math teacher and head boys basketball coach robert d sloan be appointed the next athletic director for the lakewood city school district over his 29-year career mr sloane has served as an ad for saint vincent st mary and is currently an associate principal at cuyahoga falls high school and the lakewood board of education is being asked to approve a three-year contract for mr sloan set to officially begin on august 1st of this year so i would invite you to or ask you to take action on that and then we'll have a little bit more introduction of mr sloan okay thank you thanks for your hard work on this mr calhoun i would uh then move approval of the appointment
of uh the the approval of the contract for mr sloan as our athletic director second it's been moved and seconded all in favor signify by saying hi hi thank you very much and we are he is our the athletic director yes awesome thank you so along with that the previously mentioned experiences um probably one of the most exciting things to to talk about as it uh pertains to rob is his experiences here um certainly his aeg experience is important and his current administrative role but you know when he was here back in 2000 to 2004 he did a pretty extraordinary thing he took over a struggling program and turned it into a plane dealer top 15 team three of his four seasons while he was here and he also earned the greater cleveland basketball coaches
association and on northeast lakes district coach of the year honors in 2002. he did some accomplished some of the same things when he went to cuyahoga falls those just aren't as important [Laughter] but certainly we're excited to have someone on board that has that athletic director experience in his back pocket to bring to the table here in lakewood but he also brought a contagious enthusiasm to the table with him um in the interview process with each meeting that that we had with him and it's evident that a big piece of his heart is still here in lakewood it's never left um and he was excited about the prospect of reacquainting himself with and with everyone and he always brought the constant um consistent message that um he wants to be an educational leader by fostering
and building positive relationships through sports and athletics i think that that you know that really stuck out and is an important thing to point out to the board um he's here obviously this this evening and i know he wants to introduce his wife to us and he has some words he would like to share with the board too so thank you i don't know if i can top that or not um first of all i'd like to say thank you to the board of education it means a lot the members of the interview committee including all the coaches the boosters the middle school high school staff members mr ass mr smith mr walter mr or dr palumbo mr schlade mrs nizwiki anybody else i might have forgotten in that i'd also like to thank fran
hanrahan is she here i mean she's a she was a constant when i was here and since this process has begun she's a constant again so um it means a lot most importantly i'd like to thank my wife tanya she's allowed me to pursue this dream um and this is a dream job for me this is um an end job for me this is where i want to end my career hopefully a long time from now it's been a long time coming and i'm so happy to be back as far as this position goes i can't wait to get started like some of the people have already gotten tired of seeing me like i've been to a couple of basketball games the girls games i was at the indoor track meet so i'm sure they're
getting a little sick of me already but it's going to get worse i feel bad for them the one thing i wanted to make sure i articulated is that we're going to have a vision statement and a mission statement for our athletic program it's going to be really nice it's going to be something that you can be proud of but the bottom line is we want to build character and win championships um i think if you can do the first of those two things the other ones will soon follow so we are going to base our entire athletic program on character building hiring character people and making sure that we're doing what's right when it's right all the time and if we do that i think we're going to win a lot of championships here
at lakewood and i'm so happy to be back so thank you very much thank you [Applause] thank you next i would like to invite to the podium high school principal mr walters mr walter uh will be recognizing joseph daiso as allstate jazz band thank you well a few board meetings though we had an opportunity to acknowledge some some excellent musicians and at that time i talked about one of the the crown jewels of the lakewood city schools is our performing arts department and we know that locally and if if you were at the uh the play last week you would have heard the pitt orchestra um with the percussionist uh joey daiso uh keeping the beat and the the music was just unbelievable at a certain point i thought it was a soundtrack because it
was so it was so professionally done and so beautiful so not only or do we know it locally that also at the state level they acknowledge our fabulous musicians so i actually have the honor of presenting the selection for the allstate jazz band and joseph deso and i have something from state senator nikki antony she could not be here so i'd like to present you with this honoring joe daiso for outstanding attainment for the 334th general assembly of ohio for being selected to the all-state jazz band so congratulations [Applause] we're very proud of you you make everybody's lives brighter with your music and uh thank you very much thank you would you like to say anything would you like to introduce anyone who's here with you um i just wanted to say thank all of
uh thanks to all you guys for giving me a nice round of applause my mom's super proud of me i'm sure um she's been letting me play music for a very long time and i don't mean like over the years i mean like during the day i play for a very long time so uh thanks to her for that um and hopefully i will be eating dinner soon [Applause] congratulations additionally i'd like to invite the principal of course man sonia henley up to give her building report and star student report way too tall for me good evening board president shaughnessy board vice president callahan esteemed board members superintendent nizwiki and treasurer zeman i am honored to be here this evening to celebrate our star student and to share the work we are doing here at
horace mann now i would like to introduce our star student michael nino [Applause] no that would help huh mrs martzdoff wrote the following about michael nino michael nino is a student in mrs martial's fifth grade class at horace mann elementary school michael is a student who truly embodies all six vision of a lakewood graduate competencies empathy growth mindset communication collaboration critical and creative thinking and global awareness and citizenship michael demonstrates kindness and acceptance in the classroom encourages his classmates when opportunities arise and understands the emotions of others often volunteering to help classmates who are struggling michael's empathy often shines through our weekly dei b lessons where he is able to articulate the emotions and perspectives of book characters real life situations and events of influential and well-known people in the world michael is always willing

surprises me with his ability to make connections across content areas sometimes even months after we have discussed a particular topic critical and creative thinking shines through as michael is always willing and able to consider diverse points of view in all learning areas at school and beyond finally michael's ability to seek and understand different perspectives while also celebrating and appreciating the differences that make horace mann so very unique prove that as a globally aware citizen michael's future is limitless as he grows to take an active role in his community and works with others to make our planet more equitable fair and sustainable congratulations michael you are so very deserving to be horace mann star student did you want to introduce your mom mom my mom um is very hard working and i would um and she
um always helps me out and has always pushed me to do things like dare basketball and do safety patrol even when she works harder to make money so we can live in our house michael this is just a small token of our esteem i think i'm just floored by all you bring to your class and i can tell by your talking about your mom that you're just a loving kind person and look forward to seeing you through all the years and recognizing you when you graduate from lakewood high school so congratulations and thank you on behalf of the [Applause] do board um [Applause] wait a minute thank you oh i got it as the new building principle at horace mann our goal this year is relationship building and the sense of belonging for everyone connected
to horace mann from the students and families to the teachers paras lunch staff custodial staff office staff etc we believe these relationships will lead to increased academic growth and social emotional recovery coming back this year with all of the challenges the world presents today made us have an increased focus on meeting students where they are academically and emotionally it has been a challenging year the students have shown perseverance grit and hard work each month we highlight one core competency of a lakewood graduate examples and definitions are shared on the morning announcements and display continuously throughout the day on our tvs around the building books are displayed in red that reinforce the characteristic and students can earn all that in a bag of chips along with a sheet that helps them discuss what happened with their
families we use our book vending machine and specific titles based on dei sel and the competencies to celebrate behaviors and reinforce the love of reading every student is recognized each month through our pbis system while we take our learning very seriously at horace mann we also take our fun seriously we have the co-op basketball team that michael talked about girls on the run gym basketball jones assemblies many dance parties to celebrate new learning math club champs cafe walking field trips and more when deciding on what and how to present horace mann at this board meeting i approached our building leadership team and our fifth graders and asked what they wanted me to say and do the teachers mention an old song that reminds them of horace mann and the students well they took it over
and came up with the following video which will be shown during our morning announcements and has already been shared with their parents the students worked very hard collaboratively to include students in each grade level they wrote a script they found a book that matched the competency then interviewed a pier they worked very hard and are very proud of the product i hope you enjoy it [Music] hello my name is rosie and i'm a fifth grader at horace mann we are here today to learn about the six core skills of a liquid student these are empathy communication collaboration global awareness growth mindset and critical and creative thinking come with me to meet some of the other students and see what they have to say virginia is a third grade student at horseman regina do you know
what empathy is empathy is being able to understand how someone else feels can you name one way you show empathy if i'm playing a game with a friend and i like it but i notice that they don't i can try and understand why they're not having fun when i understand how they feel i can ask what they would rather do do we have any good books about empathy in the library yes those shoes it's about a boy who notices that another boy likes his shoes but can't afford to buy them so he gives his to him because he knows how it feels to not have enough money to have something that you want thanks virginia this is all great information mckenzie is a fifth grader first man mackenzie do you know what the two types
of personal communication are verbal and non-verbal verbal communication with their words nonverbal communication uses our eyes face expressions and body language that's cool can you give me an example of nonverbal communication so if i'm really mad about something you did i could sit here and cross my arms put my head down and frown or turn my back to you oh i get it are there any important parts about communicating that make it work better be an active listener when others are speaking to you you should also ask questions to make things clear to yourself the book listen buddy shows a good example of why these are important things you should check it out julia is a fourth grader here at horace mann julia can you tell me about collaboration collaboration is sharing ideas and working
together to solve problems how do you collaborate at horseman we do group assignments it can be tricky to share ideas work on a project together sometimes we disagree but i'm learning it's fun everybody's ideas count we respect everyone in the group collaboration is fun box attacks is a super cool book about working together to build things it turns out working together is way better than working a lot i've never heard of that book i'll have to check it out rosie is a fifth grader at horace mann rosie what does global awareness and citizenship really mean it means understanding the world and how each person can make a difference it also means working together to make our planet more equitable fair and sustainable place to live can you tell me some ways i can be a
globally aware citizen sure you can volunteer in your community learn about current events recycle and learn a new language learn about other cultures and have an open mind plus there are lots of great books to help you explore the world one great book is kamala and maya's big idea it's a true story i have two sisters work together to make a community garden to improve their neighborhood wow those are great ideas i can see how they would help me be more globally aware i'm glad michael is a fifth grader at horseman michael what is your growth mindset a growth mindset is showing that i can become smarter and gain new abilities by working hard and constantly trying why is a growth mindset important if i keep learning and don't give up even when things seem
hard i know that i can do anything it turns out that i have a growth mindset and i read a book about a girl named rosie who does too rosie revere engineer she tries to build a flying machine and never gives up even when it seems like it will never work i read that book too it is a really great book about growth mindset theo is a kindergartner at horace mann theo how can you be a critical and creative thinker there are lots of ways thinking of great ideas and exploring them is one considering other points of view and using many resources on others i see do you have an example of using those skills at horse man i use them every day when i come up with new ways to understand and remember the
things i learned that's really cool have you seen the book your fantastic elastic brain it has a lot of information about how your brain lets you think in a creative and critical ways that sounds really cool wow my classmates at horseman really know a lot about the six core skills of a laker student i learned a ton and i am very impressed i hope you are too thank you for taking the time to explore with us [Music] so that was the song that these staff thought of like old cheers you know i didn't ask which one i was another major component to horace mann's success is the student wellness specialist and the family resource coordinator their roles are so critical to the wrap around care for the students and the families mrs schwenn could not
be here this evening so i'll share some of her responsibilities on the board she helps with many of the things for our parents and some things for our students we understand the importance of working together with students families staff and community to help each child thrive not only academically but socially emotionally and physically the role of the frc is to support students and families help problem solve concerns and advocate for advocate for them in school and or with other resources in the community i will now turn it over to mrs conway our student wellness specialist to discuss her role at horace mann it's already at my level i'm katie conway and i am the student wellness specialist here at horseman and at roosevelt so i get to be in two places um first i want
to thank you for a variety of things first thank you for coming everybody i know after a long day of work and having a little break in between having to come back again is can be a little you know overwhelming sometimes so thank you i i appreciate all your time and effort um i also want to thank you from the bottom of my heart i don't know why i'm getting on here i don't know um for creating this position um i'm really proud to work in a district that sees the whole child through the vision of a lakewood graduate as you know our country is in a mental health crisis and lakewood is stepping up and doing something to help we as a school district are many kids first or only line of defense because
there are waiting lists for pediatric mental health providers and they can be as long as weeks to months so i'm just glad that we can provide support and you may be saying why is this important for schools if kids are unregulated and that's due to trauma or emotional distress they're unable to learn i've spent a lot of time this year talking to kids about brains i ask a lot of them where they think their feelings and emotions come from and a lot of them say their heart and we talk about different parts of the brain but we don't talk about the amygdala or the hypothalamus or the prefrontal cortex we talk about their upstairs and downstairs brain and we talk about how when they're in their upstairs upstairs brain that's their thinking brain their decision-making
brain their critical thinking and their downstairs brain houses their feelings and a lot of kids when their feelings get very big they flip their lid and they are no longer able to learn all they can do is think about whatever feeling they are having and so we talk about calm down strategies that they can use um because everybody has feelings and as adults most of us can regulate those feelings but we need to teach kids how to regulate these feelings so they are able to learn um and so by going into the classrooms we can use consistent and common language throughout the entire building some of the other ways that i support kids in schools are i push in to every classroom and i provide tier one curriculum which means i am able to teach
every single child some basic emotional skills um in kindergarten i go in and we talk about feeling buddies where they're identifying their feelings third grade we talk about growth mindset perseverance when things get tough fourth grade this is a big one conflict resolution there is no lack of um issues on the playground so that is definitely one that we talk about a lot and in every classroom mrs henley and i were able to institute calm down corners for kids where instead of if a kid has a a big feeling and they can't get to their upstairs brain you know there's a place a safe place in the classroom they can go with the strategies that we've talked about to calm themselves down and get back into their thinking brains um i am also able to
do some tier two work with kids one-on-one check-ins which is really probably my favorite part kids just wanna feel heard and so i get to do that which is that's my favorite um we also do lunch bunches with the fifth graders and i do small groups friendship lego groups um and with this work we hope to minimize the need for intense tier three intervention as a staff i feel very lucky we have tons of teacher support but we also have a core team that meets every week to discuss the needs of the kids and that consists of mrs henley our school psychologist our family resource coordinator myself and our belfair counselor and we are able to brainstorm and make sure that we are again looking at the whole child to figure out how to best
help students and families be successful so again thank you i love my job like mr sloan said it's a dream job isn't it so that's what i get to do every day i feel very fortunate so thank you thank you and that's part of the reason why horace mann and lakewood are so great because we have past compassionate and passionate people that work with our kids every day there's nothing that i can ask her to do that she won't try to make happen i would like to close the presentation with some academic data a few thank yous and a few fun pictures so we recently had an i ready visit where we got to break down everything that we were doing um in grades three through five well two through five and i am so
proud of what the students have been able to accomplish we during in the area of reading 48 of our students have met their end of the year goal for growth and that was in december in the mid-year mark you're supposed to have 50 percent in in 50 percent growth in december but 48 of our students had 100 percent growth 28 of our students met their end of the year stretch growth nationally only 25 percent are expected to achieve that at the end of the year is the expected achievement in both reading and math by the mid-year mark these assessments were given in december so then i gave you a breakdown of how our reading scores were in each grade level second grade 95 percent of our students reached their end of the year goal third
grade 95 fourth grade 118 and that takes into account the students that made their stretch goal and fifth grade is 85 percent our goal this year is also in math because math is lower than reading but in math we have had 52 percent of our students meet their end of the year goal and 19 meet their stretch goal so we are doing great things here academically and the children have worked so so very hard and i just wanted to conclude and by thanking all of the students that made this presentation possible i want to thank delaney gillian for taking my crazy ideas and making them possible and then telling me the ones that weren't possible um and mrs martial for her help writing up such a great um write-up for michael i also want to
thank the staff at horace mann they have come together and really made this year wonderful for me for my first year they have been welcoming and caring and i love the way they take care of the kids so these these are a few pictures we had a mystery reader superintendent gym basketball jones was our pbis kickoff assembly we had the fire safety week where we got to see the first female firefighter climb all the way up the pole it was a great growth moment girls can do anything other mystery readers we have our main man stand right there he is one of our best calm down buddies that we have he comes maybe once a month when he's feeling okay and if children have problems they go into miss kramer's classroom and they cuddle with
him for a moment we celebrated hispanic heritage month we have put flags up all over the building from all over the world and this where you can find your region we have celebrated native american heritage month superman walk it's usually called father's walk but we like to invite any influential man in your life to come so we call it the superman walk veterans day it was a great hit people were so happy to be back together in person we also have two veterans that work here our custodian mr jim mcconnell and our preschool teacher jonathan davis we use our book vending machine which is the kids get so excited about it and there's our fall festival we have champs cafe once every other month at 8 a.m for the teachers and staff the champs went
on a walking field trip to get things for their cooking activity black history month posters and more i could have given you pictures forever do you have any questions for me i certainly appreciate the presentation uh thank you mrs conway for your glimpse into the the work that you do um in recognizing you know the importance of of mental health uh again great presentation thank you so much to thank you [Applause] thank you great job i i believe this is a great way to segue into a short conversation i want to have about house bill 327 and so house bill 327 prohibit teaching advocating or promoting divisive concepts something that is disappointing right now and i was able to send a letter off to senator antonio who i know will get back to me and
is quite an advocate for lakewood city schools and i wanted to share what i have sent to her a couple years ago lakewood city schools engaged various stakeholders in the development of our vision of a lakewood graduate and you can see that from every board meeting the presentations that occur so this seems very thematic right now together we came up with the following essential skills abilities and habits of mind that our graduates would need to engage in the ever-changing workforce and college experiences we stated that all students will become good collaborators and have skills to communicate clearly through this work they will learn to have and show empathy and develop a growth mindset that would allow us to understand ourselves as global citizens and this all will be realized from being critical and creative thinkers
house bill 327 could potentially not allow the local board of education the opportunity to approve coursework that we believe fosters an open-minded approach to learning histories and cultures lakewood city schools is against house bill 327 and all that it stands for ohio is a local control state local control is grounded in a philosophy of government premise on the belief that the individuals and institutions closest to the students and most knowledgeable about their schools are the most that invested in the welfare and success of its academics students and staff in addition the college board announced in a statement this week opposing censorship and indicated censorship in an ap course may result in the course losing its ap designation lakewood city schools was one of 50 schools nationally that were selected to pilot the aep african cultural
studies this coming school year and i went on to share with her that i'd be happy to sit down and discuss this further with her and to see what we could do to ensure that our local school boards continue to have a voice in the curriculum that is put forth for our students thank you i know you know i this isn't the communication point but i know our board members have all had opinions some of which probably shouldn't be shared here about this and the word of paul is um mild for what i feel about this but in support of mrs wiki's act would anyone else like comment sure i'll start i appreciate you sending that letter it definitely uh expresses a lot of what i feel about that bill i'm very proud of the
fact that lakewood is a leader in promoting diversity within its curriculum and teaching staff this ap african cultural studies course it's a feather in our cap to be one of the 50 high schools in the nation to be offering that and the fact that we offer native american studies but that it not only at the high school that were that goes down to all levels of education liquid and i wouldn't want any outside uh entity to deter us from providing that kind of leadership and demonstrating to our kids you know what what we believe is important so i appreciate what you've done i look forward to what senator antonio plans to do we will certainly take additional action and i encourage uh lakewood residents parents everybody to contact your state representatives and senators and the
governor and anybody else's state board of education and express your feelings about this because we've seen time and again especially in recent years that if enough people speak up it can really change the course of these kinds of actions so that would be my opinion thanks i'll just i guess sort of uh reiterate or add on to two things that were brought up the one that i think is really one thing that's very important is this concept and we often use the term home rule here um in ohio but locally is that the citizens of lakewood elect the five of us to represent you sometimes we might be in alignment with you sometimes not but you all have the right every two years to to go to the ballot box and decide who you want
to represent you bills like this take that right away from you what they do what they're the intention there is to create a state rule ultimately that will dictate to all of us how you want things done and the big picture is and i think certainly the past couple years have shown us is that um we're here to listen to you to work with you and to do collectively the best we all can for our community and for our students and so big picture even if if you have say different thoughts on this a bill like this doesn't necessarily represent you because the five of us are here to do that to listen to you um so but the second thing is is when i think about even that element of uh whether it's critical
and creative thinking or communication or just other things that we that we work on is that um there are sometimes sometimes things uh that are tough uh that we we still need to learn we still need to process um people can still arrive at different conclusions and take different things from topics uh but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk about them and we shouldn't all arrive at our own conclusions for things so if if we are unable to even discuss difficult things that completely completely cuts off just so much learning that can take place and again allowing our kids to actually arrive where they want to be on a topic not from the place of what somebody tells them to think but ultimately what they decide and what they think about that and i
do think in the context of the past two years in particular past i guess two and a half ish now is that we can do hard things we are capable of doing hard things and i'll put that in learning too is that there are some some sad things there are some horrible things and there are some other parts of whether it's current or history um historical events that we we need to know we need to think about we need to talk about discuss and then learn from and so again a bill like this is just a bad idea when it comes to um allowing all of us to to work through those things i thank my colleagues uh for for their comment and certainly um stand by them uh in their support our support of
our superintendent and uh your correspondents your advocacy i hope that we are effective in change and advocating for home rule in this case so thank you so we have a number of school districts around us that are equally concerned correct and we have the ohio school boards association superintendents association so i think we have some different vehicles for approaching this um i have been on the board for a while and we did have a period when i was first on the board of some interest in censoring books and there were people campaign for school board on that and i think we would just be almost it's almost laughable now what some of those books were they were they're classics and the city of lakewood did not elect the people that chose to do that they
elected people that and i believe i was one many years ago that trust educators trust families trust all of us to about truth and about the ability of children to comprehend and to learn and to question so eventually that kind of wore out because i believe that the side that was initially a proponent of it decided that actually that could sometime work against them and so it really probably wasn't a real good idea to have someone decide what was the topic that shouldn't be talked about because it might be one of their topics so it kind of died out now we're back in this and it seems to come when we have a time of great stress like we've had the last couple years and and you get this emotion and your top of your
head and your lower head and it all blows up so i'm going to use that by the way i think that's it but um anyway a long-winded way of just saying that i think this is something that is important and that we need to put our minds and shoulders to and communicate with our community as well about what this really means and we can do it up to the task up to the fight you know we teach history we don't teach an opinion and good unlikely so excellent i think a great example mrs henley shared is just michael asking why and we want our kids to wonder and ask why and then right straight up to our ap classes that you know students are encouraged to evaluate arguments but not one another and so you
know we're trying to build these skills from the ground up and i think very important life skills so i will continue to keep you updated on this thank you very much and that concludes the superintendent's report thank you okay we now move on to the consent emotion regarding the consent agenda is there a sure i move uh approval of the consent agenda second it's been moved in second and this requires the roll call vote ms shaunicy aye ms callahan aye ms peter barcelona aye ms casenberger aye thank you very much and those uh included in that are all the items that were discussed two weeks ago we now come to human resources and community services report mr callahan thank you president shaughnessy uh mr zieman may i combine the first four items um in this
case or should we take each of those separately under human resources yes yes with the amendment that we did earlier correct so we have before us now under certified 104 actions including two unpaid leaves of absence seven appointments 67 special compensation 28 salary and pay adjustments and then we will combine those with certified non-employee coach advisor one appointment action uh under classified 24 actions including two unpaid leaves of absence seven appointments and 15 special compensations and then also combining with that seven actions classified non-employee coaches advisors seven appointments so i would move approval of those items second okay emotions been made to approve items one through four all in favor signify by saying aye aye aye opposed and that carries and i would like to say if anyone needs to leave or would like to
leave or there are children who need have homework and parents that are weary please feel free to go got all caught up in my little speech forgot to release you thank you all for coming okay sorry mr cahyan oh thank you um the fifth item under human resources and community services we are being asked to approve on a roll call vote uh this evening 26 total actions involving community recreation and education 17 in aquatics two in athletics six with the fitness facility and one under programs i would move approval second uh the community recreation and education motion's been uh moved and seconded this requires the roll cover please uh miss shaughnessy aye mr calahan aye ms peter arcelona abstain ms katzenberger aye thank you and the motion carries we now move on to other board
business and there are a number of hr reactions so mr callahan would you consider i am still on thank you um requesting approval on one reading and this will require a roll call vote for the following certified actions you have in your materials for retirement one resignation and one appointment so i would move approval of those items second it's been moved and seconded uh this is on one reading and requires a roll call miss shaunicy aye mr callahan aye ms p barcelona aye ms katzenberg aye the motion carries all right our our next item if i may uh underclassified again being asked to approve this in one reading and thus on a roll call vote we have uh two resignations i would move approval there second uh it's been moved and seconded and on one
reading so this would require roll call miss jonathan aye mr callahan aye ms p barcelona aye ms kastenberger aye thank you very much uh the next resolution is to approve advanced refunding of outstanding debt and this is the first reading miss barcelona thank you indeed what we have before us that we'll vote on at our next meeting is we have the opportunity to refinance some old debt basically some old bonds from 2014. treasurer zieman has provided information about this uh it just comes down to the fact that there we have an opportunity to do this when the basically the costs associated um with it um are within some bounds to really help save the district money for i guess in summary so in this case um it's a resolution for the issuance of sale of
bonds in a maximum aggregate principal amount of just over 37 million dollars for the purpose of refund refunding at a lower lower interest rate um and i'm just trying to see if there's any other big things that we need to um um oh just overall that the savings of the bonds to be refunded exceeds uh 2.1 million or seven percent and so that's always what's taken into account when considering this sort of opportunity to do so uh you may recall um gosh now years start flowing together are we at three years ago than when we last did this church so five years ago five years ago um but uh we've had opportunities to do this in the past and when basically when the time is right um we look for these opportunities basically to save
save taxpayers uh additional resources so um again we have the information before here before us and we'll vote on it at our next meeting is there anything you'd like to add no just i mean you you spoke to the point the reason we do this is again for the that two that 2.1 million dollars potentially of savings is spread over the remaining maturity of those loans which would which expire in 2029 so it's not an immediate type situation but the refundings we did in 2000 2017 2014 and 2017 allowed us back in 2020 to reduce that debt millage by over three mills and and so at that time that hopefully down the road this will allow us to do that as well it's excellent and i would also like to say that that's why you
are such an excellent treasurer no i mean this it's i was tickled pig to see this so um thank you for bringing these things to us interest rates are doing the job somebody's paying attention so i appreciate it any other questions okay thank you very much thank you um the next item is mr callahan thank you so we have the these next three items are are all amendments to memoranda of understanding the first one here is is the mou between the lakewood city school district board of ed and the ohio association of public school employees local 129. essentially this change changes the existing mou its effective date from september 1 of 2021 to july 1st of 2021. we are being asked to approve this on one reading and thus a roll call vote i would
move approval second vote i would move approval second it's been moved and seconded may we have a roll call miss shaughnessy aye mr callahan aye ms peter barcelona aye ms katzenberger aye thank you thank you the next item um again a similar amendment um this one between the board of education and uh the oc local 134 again the same concept here the effective date of the existing mou changing that back to july 1st 2021 again being asked to approve that on a roll call vote and i would move approval second it's been moved and seconded may we have a roll call ms shaughnessy aye mr callahan aye ms peterson aye ms katzenberg aye thank you and then finally uh this uh is an amendment to the december 6 21 resolution providing emergency coping 19 provisions
for non-bargaining staff and again i would move approval second thank you and this requires a roll call due to being approved at one reading shaughnessy aye ms callahan aye ms peter arcelona aye ms katzenberg hi thank you thank you um is there any other other board business okay hearing none we come to the communications portion of our meeting have any board members received any comments i was speaking exchanging some messages with someone talking about how we coordinate graduation dates or graduation ceremonies with other events that happen at the end of the year i know this is a kind of a random topic but i thought it was interesting that might be something that people might be interested to understand how we you know how far in advance we set those things uh this particular parent
was uh in concern about um track uh regional competitions and you know that how do we coordinate things with other activities to make sure that kids can make their graduation ceremonies and their other activities so um might be so what i encourage this person to do is to reach out to the district but also to attend the superintendent chat on wednesday the listen and learn at which is at the lakewood public library at six o'clock correct just because those are those listen and learn events are great opportunities to talk about subjects like that how does that work how do you guys choose you know what are the different you know factors that go into it so or if you have things like that that are on your mind you'd like to sit down you know
if a superintendent is wiki she is so wonderful at those events and and it's great to have a bunch of people there because it sparks discussion among other people and everybody learns from each other there's typically uh at least some board representation at those events i know i plan on attending so i encourage anybody in attendance or watching us to come on wednesday night and listen and learn so thank you i just want to say we had the wonderful community leaders breakfast and just to commend the culinary students oh fantastic job i think it was the best yet okay do you have anything that you've to share okay thank you very much then it's the opportunity for any of you in the public who would like to comment would love to hear from you okay
there is no one we understand i was looking at a lot of familiar faces but i thought perhaps um okay well is there a motion to adjourn i'll move adjournment second it's been moved in second and all in favor signify by saying aye aye thank you very much thank you all for coming
