the pledge okay first item of business is adoption of the agenda is there a motion i move adoption of the agenda second it's been moved and seconded that we adapt the agenda this requires the roll call mr saunacy aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter arcelona aye ms katzenberger aye thank you thank you very much and now we come to superintendent ninzuki's report still we're still waiting we're still waiting right so i'll just flip up okay okay good evening president shaughnessy vice president callahan distinguished board members tonight i would like to have denise letty principal of emerson elementary please join us at the podium it's coming um well good evening my name is denise letty and i am the proud principal of emerson elementary and i would like to start today by thanking

you for this opportunity to recognize our star student first and foremost so rylynn rhodey is here today representing emerson elementary because although she is merely a fourth grader she is living the work of our vision of a lakewood graduate rylan is a strong collaborator and communicator she is the person that kids like to be in a group with because she listens to everyone and she draws ideas out in others in fourth grade students begin to switch classes and that's no easy feat and at times when the classroom line has not been ready to transition in the hallway she has been spotted traveling down the line subtly coaching them to quiet down when it comes to critical thinking ryland goes above and beyond she engages in the classroom at high levels if a challenge assignment is

offered ryland completes it and with her very best effort within the first month of school rylan was given the global awareness citizenship award for her recognizable levels of respect at our school ryland engages in numerous clubs and activities she's a member of our new elementary student dei diversity equity and inclusion club and in the club she has begun to assume a leadership role she is also among a group of four to be co-founders of a student-initiated harry potter club that is now in the planning stages it was my intention to spotlight a few competencies in which rylan has strengths and in doing so it became obvious that all of our competencies found in our vision of a lakewood graduate are strengths of rylan best of all rylan is a humble student with a growth mindset

and we know that she will continue to lead by example i present to you ryland roadie representing emerson elementary as our 2021 2022 star student [Applause] well thank you very much for offering to help us with the pledge we really appreciate it we have this commendation for you and tonight it's your lucky day because you also get a few candies which is not normal would you like to say something would you like to introduce who's here with you yes so i have my mom my dad my brother and kenna um i really like diversity club because everyone includes you and they listen to what you have to say good excellent well thanks for your leadership we're going to take something here come on in here thank you [Applause] well thank you for that i would

like to just take a few minutes to talk to you about some ways in which emerson elementary is growing our vision of a lakewood graduate this is luddy okay i'm sorry to interrupt you no problem i know that some of our participants in the next award have another meeting following this one yeah would you mind if we just i don't mind deciding yes not a problem the mayor wins yes absolutely there you go so we also have another very special presentation i would like to introduce up to the podium angela potter from the state fire marshal office fire chief dunphy fire marshall fairbanks and also mayor george hi there my name is angela potter and i work in the prevention bureau at the state fire marshal's office i am an educator there and so tonight

i would like to thank of course lakewood board of education roosevelt elementary school lakewood fire department and mariah king and her family and the community for being so invested in fire safety so just a little bit about this poster contest that she is actually the winner of i want to tell you how that got started and and kind of what we do about that so across the state of ohio there are 1185 fire departments and at the beginning of each school year we send information out to those departments and then they go into the schools and promote this fire safety contest and then usually right around fire prevention week down at the state in columbus we will get some of the winners across you know that the fire departments have chosen so locally the fire

departments get to choose two winners one from each uh age group and so lakewood sent their winners down and then uh in december we chose winners from across the state so this is super awesome because there are only six winners in each um age group and so uh mariah was the winner for the fifth graders so mariah if you would like to come up all right so i'm going to tell you she is going to get a ribbon here so there you are mariah a little ribbon for you and then she's also going to be presented with a um certificate here and we'll open it up so you can see it this is a certificate that is signed by the state fire marshal which is kevin reardon so here it is and then her artwork

is on there so if you wanna hold that up and then i'm going to tell you so like i said we receive quite a few entries each year and this is a larger version of mariah's artwork here and usually students will choose one thing that they want to highlight and of course mariah chose six so she is super invested in fire safety and so we really appreciate your enthusiasm and here you go with this and then we just want to tell you congratulations [Applause] uh so glad to be here tonight um thank you for putting us at the top of the agenda we have our city council tonight so we're hopping to a couple meetings but so happy to be here be in the schools and to recognize you mariah on this great contest and

your great artwork on fire prevention so on behalf of the city of lakewood we have fire marshal chief dunphy myself here's a proclamation recognizing mariah and i want to just read a couple sentences from the proclamation mariah a fifth grade student at roosevelt elementary school demonstrated an understanding of the issues related to fire safety education and showed the ability to visually portray that knowledge mariah's poster included a fire prevention theme and displayed positive behavior statements of what students can do to prevent a fire at home showing what steps to take when a smoke alarm sounds and having fire escape plans i on behalf of the city of lakewood do give you this proclamation so here you go as well [Applause] you have a small gift and when she opens it um oh [Applause] one more

uh mariah this is a certificate recognizing your really great accomplishment i mean with competition like that and i think that your work is going to help people stay safe so congratulations we have a little box of candy and there you go dear thank you so much [Applause] are you okay here we go thank you for coming thank you congratulations so proud of both these ladies for these awards tonight thank you for just going over and beyond very sharp thank you everyone thank you thank you thanks for coming thank you now to the podium wow so exciting mrs letty has a presentation not to be interrupted again i promise i think hey if there's one thing i know being flexible is what matters as a principal i will tell you if some of the board members

you can either pivot to see the presentation or there are chairs up front if you'd like to spin those thank you miss lady i'm blocking someone well thank you um i just really would like to take a few minutes to spotlight something for you that we feel is very important and that's our work on growing our our vision of a lakewood graduate and this is a overview very far overview but um wrong direction there we go so thank you um i'd like to thank the board for your work and allowing us to have these presentations and honoring our students your focus is not lost it's appreciated so much we know that that's your heart and your care and we appreciate that so during the 1920 school year the vision of a lakewood graduate began to

emerge and grow and emerson took a opportunity to consciously grow our competencies we look to our staff our building committees our building leadership team our pto to consider how could they each grow this vision and we began collaborating and growing our strengths and this was an incredible process because it allowed us to strengthen our values and our beliefs around our vision and we sought out students at grades two to five to determine what are our next steps and what they felt we needed to work on and soon our vision became our north star for all of the work that we did and um and that was important because as we entered into the following school year in 2021 we faced a lot of challenges and um our vision carried us through and in ways that

maybe you don't imagine but our teams imagined and so we pursued our book vending machine with pto and it wasn't a vending machine just for the sake of having books but we used the natural skills of our staff to teach school expectations and we began to coach our students to exemplify the competencies found in our vision of the lakewood graduate and we honored our students for their successes in these areas and rewarded them with a golden coin and we really celebrated and these were last year some of our beginning kids who were receiving their golden coins from the vending machine during our tough times last year and it's important because our vision holds us and even in the toughest times our values continue to drive our daily decisions and so today i wanted to talk

to you a little bit about what's happening in and we've added a lens to the vision of a lakewood graduate and the lens includes social emotional learning diversity equity and inclusion as well as a sense of belonging and we have a new club that i wanted to talk to you about today because i feel like it is the convergence of social emotional learning and diversity equity and inclusion so introducing our be yourself club this is our elementary student diversity equity and inclusion club and under the direction of shannon mcpeak teacher looking for a way [Laughter] shannon scott miller family resource coordinator my exceptional leaders here invited grades 3 4 and 5 to be a part of this club and they looked to glsen resources for inspiration and then they catered activities and they utilized art

activities to allow students to express themselves and we began our first couple experiences really around identity awareness and the students for the first couple sessions focused on self-portraits their essential understanding was that our diversity makes us unique and discovering their identity and drawing self-portraits became their work then in the next couple sessions they focused on community houses and the essential understanding was that our diversity brings us together in different communities and discovering our identity and creating houses to celebrate our diversity and communities became our work and we have some of these things displayed in the back that i'm going to invite you later to take a look at rylan worked on the family house back there right rylynn yep and so when you think about family you might have different family members maybe there's you

know just a variety of allegiances within family and they can speak to that too more for you but amazingly what happened next was quite incredible i think for elementary and they started to shift away from some identity work to advocating and a global awareness perspective and i couldn't have been more impressed our coordinators had them work on tackling racism and the essential understanding was one around understanding what happened yesterday and today but also understanding that we can advocate for change so this was incredible the team began with a video with amanda gorman a clip and who is always so inspirational and then moved on to a discussion about what do you know from the past what do you see today and what do you want to do about it and this team took on all

of these teachable moments the kids would say things like you know i know there's something about the drinking fountains but i don't know what that is and so um our staff helped to clarify with students and then they brainstormed about you know what do we do next how do we raise awareness and they worked on came up with the idea themselves to create posters to end racism to spread positivity so here's a picture ryland's in here and some other students from her group and um this is her poster and team and it says um not all the same but always beautiful so that's amazing you can see the poster up there up close too but in summary i just wanted to tell you that um i'm so inspired by our elementary students and their perspectives

i feel like the possibilities are endless the be yourself club is a place where students have a strong sense of belonging ryland mentioned that in her speech today and she feels like it's a second family and um our students are just so full of hope and love and empathy and they care um so much about others and the future of our connectedness so i wanted to share that with you among our tough times we have like such an inspirational crew inspire inspirational leaders um to to lead our kids in this excellent work so thank you and i invite you at the close to uh take a look at some of our artwork and answer some of your questions thanks thank you for your support do you have any questions now just to say it's fantastic

it really is i think so but i'm biased in a good way i think i'm always surprised at how pers not i shouldn't be but how perceptive children are and what they see that doesn't even have to be taught if you let them i don't experience it and then talk about it so i love be yourself and so just as a concept i think we should all get a dose of that thank you i agree how many members are there currently in the club oh that's wonderful yeah definitely they are chomping at the bit and breaking through the doors at early morning you know hours to to come in and be a part of this and like they're giving up their recesses and their lunches like can i come and work on these posters you

know they're just giving up their time not their lunches they're eating guys but their time thank you miss letty that's that's a wonderful presentation and i always feel like after i i have a board meeting we see a presentation from the school the world's gonna continue to be a better place yeah but the students and the staff that we have so thank you all for all that you do and and students thank you for teaching us how to be better appreciate it give you all a hand [Applause] that concludes the superintendent's report oh thank you if anyone would like to leave because they have school or homework or anything to do feel free we will not judge harshly and you're always welcome to stay for the business birth meeting but we wouldn't want to okay

uh next item is the consent agenda is there a motion to adopt the consent agenda so move second it's been moved and seconded um these are we are voting as a group on all those things we discussed at our board meeting two weeks ago and this requires the roll call vote ms shaughnessy aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona aye ms katzenberger hi thank you thank you and now we come to the human resources and community services report mr callahan thank you president shaughnessy we have four items uh this evening the first is a resolution for 59 actions regarding certified personnel we have one unpaid leave of absence five appointments 52 special compensations and one other personnel action mr zieman may i combine certified and classified or should we keep them separate

okay so so then we will combine that with our classified 13 actions including three appointments eight special compensations and two other personnel actions and i would move adoption of those resolutions jointly second it's been moved and seconded that we adopted certified and classified actions resolutions i'm all in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed and those motions kerry thank you and next we have community recreation and education uh 24 total actions including three in aquatics six in athletics and 15 regarding the fitness facility staff and i would move approval there we are being asked to do this on a roll call vote second the resolution has been moved and seconded uh mr zeeman miss shaughnessy aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona abstain ms kassenberg aye thank you the resolution passes and

then thank you and then finally we have the game worker pay rate uh changes uh the resolution is uh is uh here for a second time before us and uh and the table is in your uh board material so i would move approval there of the game worker pay rate changes second the thank you it's been moved and seconded that we adopt the game worker pay rate changes all in favor signify by saying i i opposed and the resolution is in effect we now move on to other board business which as usual continues in the hr category mr callahan thank you again we are being asked to approve one certified special compensation on one reading of this evening and i would move approval there second the request for approval on one reading has been moved

and seconded this requires the roll call vote mr zeeman ms shaughnessy aye ms callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona aye ms katzenberger hi thank you and next we have uh one uh classified item again requesting uh approval on one reading and thus a roll call vote and this is for a resignation second thank you the resolution's been moved and seconded uh mr zeeman ms shaughnessy aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona aye ms katzenberger aye thank you thank you very much um mrs bibi i believe you have the next resolution yes we have two resolutions actually regarding our internet service in the district the first one is a provider contract for internet service between connect and the lakewood city schools it's a five-year extension of a current contract to provide

bandwidth services and customer internet access service 24 hours a day seven days a week these are both these items will be e-rate funded which means that we have uh state money that's going to to help pay for the expense of these services uh so this item we're asking for approval on one reading and i move for approval second the resolution has been moved and seconded um and requires a roll call vote ms shaughnessy aye mr canalhan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona aye ms katzenberger aye resolution passes the second item is a resolution to approve an agreement between it savvy and lakewood city schools for e-rate category two products and services which are three new a three-year renewal license for the use of 476 cisco meraki wireless access points it functions as a reseller

of cisco oh forget that the contract commences as early as april 1st 2022 terminates on september 20th the licensing agreement is being purchased for three years the they will continue to provide internet access throughout the district for staff and students and i want to ask mr donahoe just to make sure i'm clear in my head connect gives us the access coming from the outside in and the cisco access points are basically internal for access from the buildings in various sundry offices right that is that is correct [Laughter] ventriloquist [Laughter] okay so i moved in adoption of the second resolution the agreement between i.t savvy and lakewood city schools second one reading please thank you very much mrs bb the resolution to approve the agreement um has been moved and seconded mr uh mr shawnee aye

mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms pete barcelona aye ms katzen aye thank you thank you and that concludes the other board business so we move on to communications and this is a time first of all to see if any board members have had any communications they care to share yes ma'am i've had communication from people both pro and con on the district's decision to go with masks as being optional and it seems to be pretty balanced i've had communication both ways i know people are very concerned this is this is definitely a difficult subject difficult decision for uh the superintendent the difficult decision for this board and difficult for parents you know but um i think so far so good and we'll continue on just doing the best we can as you can see

how we've been wearing masks here i wanted to wear one when i was close to people and here we have good ventilation so i think we're good so um i think anyone else have come in okay superintendent it's wiki i just wanted to share i miss bibi i've had a few of both sides also and i want to continue to let everyone know as much as the county board of health and the ohio department of health have said we don't have to do certain things like keep our dashboard anyway we will continue to keep our dashboard to inform our families and we'll continue to keep track of our covet positive so if if at any point in time that we feel that we need to move back to as we mandated the mass the ohio

department of health or kyogre board of health did not mandate that this year we did we we could go back to that if we need to i hope we don't have to but we are very much aware of the situation at hand and you know somebody had already mentioned we may have to pivot again very sensible thank you excellent thanks for reminding us all of that president shaunicy oh i did want to make one comment um while most of our families were enjoying this lovely four-day weekend the staff and teachers and administrators spent a lot of time on friday at um a diversity in equity and inclusion and belonging training um and i know that when i was a parent i'd would be like great you know we have a day off the kids are

having a great day you didn't really pay you know think too much about what was going on while we were not in school but i was fortunate to participate in some of the activities in the morning and i was so impressed by the level of thoughtfulness and participation on behalf of all of our our teachers and staff in these in this these workshops i was able to attend one on the effects of poverty on education there were 27 different topics for breakouts the keynote speaker was phenomenal and i just am grateful that our everybody spent that time uh on issues that are so important to all of our families in our community right now so i just wanted to say i was really impressed and grateful to be included a second that i went to

a workshop on equity and grading and i must say it's just it's so thoughtful and so interesting how just our looking through one kind of a lens or another lens affects grading and so yes i learned quite a bit and the speaker was wonderful thanks for bringing that up i think guys i've heard good things also and now we would come to public comments but no one has requested to make a public comment so um if there is no other business that board members have to consider i would consider a motion for german i'll move the german second uh it's been moved and seconded all in favor signify by saying i i and that there will be no opposed because there were five thank you all i look forward to looking at this display in

the back
