very much mrs beebe um is returning from a trip and is at the the victim of the airlines so she's not here this evening next item of business is approval of minutes of a special board of education meeting held october 13th we've had a chance to review these are there any corrections or additions hearing none all in favor of approving the minutes opposed and we now come to the superintendent's report good evening president shaughnessy distinguished board members it is my pleasure to introduce dr palumbo to the podium to introduce our staff spotlight thank you very much superintendents wiki the staff spotlight is one of my favorite opportunities in this role as assistant superintendent so let me start by calling up arlene merrick who is our first staff spotlight awardee for the evening [Applause] hayes elementary
secretary arlene merrick is that person whose house is where everyone wants to hang out because it's just so welcoming and fun and that's the vibe she has helped successfully create during her eight years behind the reception desk at hayes as well all the kids love her said principal eric fortuna she makes things fun whether it is playing rock paper scissors with the students or organizing the weekly staff take out lunches arlene is always looking for ways to create a positive happy environment for both staff and students she is a regular at all of the special school and pto events as well arlene's nominator media assistant michelle coleman only michelle coleman o'neill calls arlene the face of haze always greeting everyone with a smile and helpful to all including staff who often come to her for
her wise advice and problem-solving skills arlene who joined the district in 2009 finds being an elementary school secretary rewarding because she is able to watch the students grow from teeny kindergartners to young people on the verge of kingdom they are all like my adopted children or grandchildren at this point says arlene with a smile thank you arlene for all that you do hi arlene the board would like to give you this sorry i walked in turn my back on everyone um recognition i think all of us know that the school secretary is like everything you actually run the school so um thank you so much for your efforts would you like to have people here with you i do you want to save this oh my my husband's with me okay of course michelle and
mr fortuna okay well i'm sure they appreciate you as well and you have to stay up here for a photo just for a minute and arlene will also be getting um through the school mail a certificate for um the ranger shop here at the high school so that is on its way and our next staff spotlight recogni is stephen kearney [Applause] harding middle school teacher stephen kearney's job is to teach math to sixth graders but his mission as he sees it is to create memories and provide a sense of belonging for every student in his classroom they won't remember everything i teach them but they will remember the experiences i provide and how i make them feel says stephen who joined the district in 2013. stephen approaches his craft with a caring heart and a
creative mind he seeks out unique ways to show his students that math is a part of the world around them such as having students act out a math novel or conducting a banking session to highlight math's integral role in cooking while developing engaging projects for his students was always in steven's tool bag some of his recent training in project-based learning provided more fuel for his passion for pbl and its benefits for students the recent math and business symposium at harding was the culmination of stephen's month-long dedication to creating a multi-disciplinary project that connected students with lakewood businesses the six-week project gave students the opportunity to discover the important role math plays in sustaining a successful business through on-site interviews with local entrepreneurs stephen's fellow math team members such as his nominator teresa reinhold praised his
dedication to his profession and his students stephen kearney truly loves teaching and goes above and beyond to make math interesting for his students and we will be hearing from stephen a little later this evening but stephen thank you so much for your dedication to our students stephen would like to present you with this and thank you i i read about your symposium it sounded like something i would have liked to have attended uh do you want to say anything and could you introduce anyone who's here tonight sure um i'm so grateful uh i have lisa bakowitz here she's my partner in crime one part we're a team of three at harding middle school and we work we do everything together so my wife could not be here she's home with my five children but um
she's watching online hi um no just it's a tremendous honor so thank you thank you [Applause] okay which way so in front of the screen [Music] so proud thank you steven and arlene thank you for all you do next i'll invite mr knee manstreve to the podium to announce harding's star student thank you superintendent nizwiki president shaughnessy president vice president favor and ms weiss barthe again thank you for having me here this evening to introduce our star student uh tonight i'd like to introduce cecilia weidemeyer cecilia if you could come on up at harding we know her is cece [Applause] cece is an 8th grader at hardy middle school this year she exemplifies many of the traits that we have identified in our vision of a graduate for what we would like our students to
become by the time they leave lakewood she demonstrates her ability to communicate effectively as a member of the harding morning news crew in addition to her communication skills she's shown in classes her teachers have shared that she demonstrates great empathy for others through how she treats them with kindness and compassion and cc serves as a youth 360 ambassador for the cleveland rape crisis center something she was connected with initially through her health class at harding additionally cc always is respectful to others and listens to differing opinions and is active in the harding be that person club which has a focus on making the school more inviting and welcoming to all of our students ceci has demonstrated a willingness to collaborate with others through her work on the hearty morning news and as of last week
as the president of the harding voters club outside the school setting cece shows her theater talents in presentations put on at the beck center in addition to all of her extracurricular activities and i can tell you i did not begin to name them all including this afternoon she was outside digging in this dirt planting bulbs to beautify hardy middle school as part of our gardening club in addition to all of those extracurricular activities cc challenges herself academically as she is enrolled in five advanced courses including two courses for high school credit as an eighth grade student in addition to all those academics she's also enrolled in not one but two music courses at the same time at harding middle school along with her related arts courses it is it is a with great pleasure that
i present cece weidemeyer as harding middle school's star student [Applause] yes do you want to introduce your parents before i give you this go ahead um so my mom my dad my sister are over there [Applause] well we have this small token but we so appreciate the effort that you're putting into making your school a better place and your city a better place i'm amazed at what you're doing it's very remarkable so i would like to give you this and thank you for making your school a place to be thank you hey congratulations cece and your family i know a place where you can get a job when you graduate from college so proud of you and now we're going to have um a harding update president shaughnessy your timing couldn't be any better on
saying that you would have liked to have heard more about the symposium that was put on um when superintendent nidwicki offered for us to have harding present this evening the first thing that i thought of was our math symposium that we recently had is it exemplifies so many of the characteristics of vision of a graduate encompassed within a project and connect with our business community um even even our mayor came and spoke at our event along with superintendent nizwiki so we greatly appreciated their support the city support the business community support so i asked uh mr kearney and ms back with ms reinhold if they would be willing to come this evening and share more about how our project came about on how businesses utilize mathematical thinking in their everyday business world mrs reinhold was
unable to join us this evening due to some family obligations but mr kearney and his backwoods are both here along with a couple students to share some more about about the project and even share a couple of examples [Applause] good evening ford superintendent nizwiki we're so excited to be here just to share a little bit with you about our project and all the hard work that we had 150 students participate in so 14 months ago dr palumbo worked hard to get a grant for teachers to be trained in project-based learning through a national program called pbl works and i was part of that and it was at the beginning of the covid year or the new kovitz school year last year and we wanted to launch a project last year but it just didn't work
so we said let's do one at the start of 2021 school year and we were able to utilize the training that i had received through the grant and we worked together with uh mayor george we reached out actually last february we said hey we have kind of a crazy idea um my colleagues and i were standing around in the hallway saying wouldn't it be great we have all these great small businesses in lakewood how are we not how are they not part of our classrooms and so we emailed um the mayor and asked if she'd help us for a project and she said i would love to so that kind of started the ball rolling and if i could just describe the project quickly it was all about building partnerships this community is unbelievable i
mean we just asked these questions of people hey we have 150 students who want to learn about how you guys use mathematical thinking in your business will you help and these are all professional people who stopped for our students and said yes we will help so we started by engaging the chamber of commerce and students learned about what the chamber of commerce does one of our favorite things we laughed about was students didn't know what the chamber of commerce was and they're familiar with harry potter and so it's like is that where they keep the secrets the chamber of sea so we all laughed at that but it so miss ryan at the chamber of commerce was phenomenal support to the project we also partnered with two other businesses to create a real live math
application problem my brother-in-law works at cuyahoga valley career center and we developed a math project where students were looking at tile and measurement and how real it was a real quote we simulated a real quote for a customer which was such a cool project and we had actually one of our own students a father owns a yoga business that's a non-profit business and so students were not familiar with what a non-profit is they're like does that mean they make no money and we talked all about what a non-profit does and it provided a really cool opportunity for students to engage with our own students father's business as part of the project and i'll let lisa talk a little bit more hi so next what we did um so from the chamber of commerce we had
a whole long list of um of businesses that might be willing to participate and we teachers started emailing and making phone calls and we were um blessed to find 52 local businesses who were you know game on and and wanted to help us with our project and so then our students went out into the community and they wrote interview questions and they interviewed these local businesses and um and then it was time for them to to put all their information together so we we show them an interview with um with a local writer brian brian holmeir who then taught them how to you know how to pick their information apart and really synthesize everything put it all together and um and make sure that their information was presented efficiently and effectively and then um and
then we had an interview with a local graphic designer and she helped the students create their infographics and make sure that they were presenting their information in a very visually appealing way and then our culminating event was our math symposium um this was such an exciting day for for us as the teachers and our students and um so we were very excited for for all the kids to present their projects and and you know parents community members came in and students presented their work and it was very exciting we loved the project so much because it was so quickly tied into the vision of a lakewood graduate we were able to implement collaboration every single day in our classroom we immediately started the project in teams in the entire six weeks they worked in teams
and each day there was critical thinking and responsibilities because we knew we had the mayor coming october 14th so we said we have to have something to show the mayor when you come she's planning on seeing your research about how our businesses in lakewood are using mathematical thinking so to document all of our research that we did with students we actually created a podcast and we turned all student interviews into a podcast that were shared with the community so you can actually find it on spotify and we encourage them hey listen to it share with your families because we did so much work with this this is such a benefit to the community to learn about local businesses and hear about how our businesses and our community are using mathematical thinking in closing my roof
i wanted to share a couple of reflections that i had and then lisa will share some we have some students to share some quick reflections but um i was so privileged to be part of this this was very much not my project it was a team project cassandra squires the training that the district provided and all the support with the vision of a lakewood graduate really breathed this project into life every day students talk we talked about hey how did you how are you using growth mindset um students were talking about collaborating and communicating every single day and i think for me my big takeaway from this project was when adults take time for students it makes a tremendous impact we had businesses stopping in the middle of their work day to say sure i'll
interview some you know sixth grade students who aren't adding any monetary value to their business but they're so generous and i think it all started with the collaborative spirit of our team and the entire city so that was i i loved it it was a wonderful project just to piggyback on what stephen's saying um this was such an incredible project i mean for me as an educator as well um it you know it started as like oh this sounds like a pretty cool math project sure steven i'm you know i'm on board with this you know i'm on board with anything that stephen wants to do so um yes and then it just it just evolved into so much more more than i ever expected it to um i mean just the kids working together
in teams and um and them going out to the community and talking to people and um and just how excited they all were you know it was you know kind of an you know it's an intimidating idea as a sixth grader going out and you know talking to you know adults in the real world and um and they you know they did such an amazing job and i'm just i'm so excited for for how well they were able to collaborate with each other and and just you know keep working work with their teams and and you know see what see what goes on in real life and just in how much how much how much math is used in in the real world and i am pleased to introduce one of our students um he
would like to talk about his project and his reflections um elliot bruce come on up hello so what did i learn from this project well many things but i learned more than just about the math experiences i learned we learned as a class how to like think about how we grew as a class for example one thing i learned was not to give up one mr kearney was talking about how we did some example project there was one time where me and my partners finn and braum we were um like trying to figure out how much towels to use for mr eurovec who is like this person who makes towels for people's kitchens and we had to figure that out and sometimes we got like let down because there was some hard math problems and
we couldn't use a calculator so it was hard and then but then we had to get through it so then another reason is have faith there was one time where i had to quarantine because i was with someone that got covet and my teammates finn and brum i relied on them to have like to make the draft of the project to get it good so when i come back i can have a sense of knowing what's going to happen last but not least encourage your teammates to encourage your teammates saying like back to the mr urevac problem sometimes we would get let down and like we were like so tired of having like problems problems problems but we had to keep going and sometimes i would when so me and finn my other partner would
do some problems and brown would get like left behind just writing down stuff i would be like mom come on we need your help so then he would get in and we'd do that as a three as a three-person group thank you so great to hear real student experiences from a project we also invited peyton diemert um to come up and share her experience with the project [Applause] hello i'm peyton and i took part in this project and i had an extreme amount of fun i was able to connect with the community and understand how businesses use math so tonight i want to share some key highlights and important takeaways from the project the first thing i learned throughout this project was teamwork we accomplished these projects in groups and if i wasn't able to
build a relationship with my groupmates and have communication our project would not have been our best so i learned how you need to put yourself out there collaborate and have communication those are key key factors to running a business i also learned a lot about how every business use matt uses math for example kb confections uses masculine baking when she's baking bigger matches batches she has to multiply all the ingredients i did notice at our math symposium that some businesses that i would never have guessed used math had a lot of math incorporated so i learned how all businesses even though they use math differently have to apply math in their business to be successful i thank all the administrators and teachers who put this project together together especially my teacher mr kearney it was
so enjoyable and interesting to learn how each business of each business applies math i also enjoyed getting to know miss bosworth and learning about her business kb confections thank you thank you so much for giving us uh this opportunity to share thank you thank you [Applause] can you wait just one sec do any board members have any questions for a nice try mr kearney was back once you come back that way when you answer it can be heard can't escape that easily like would it be uh appropriate and uh beneficial for the board to recognize the businesses either a resolution or some sort of a certificate or something for thanking them for participating if we can get a list of that and work it through the process and send them something that would be very
appropriate appreciated and mr kearney and ms bakowitz and his reinhardt do have a list of the businesses that have been involved maybe we can do something like that yeah i would just add that 52 is a substantial number and impression 52 local businesses you know participating in that project really just shows uh the community support for for our schools so we greatly appreciate that um and and thanks so much to elliot and payton for for speaking to us presenting to us this evening this is petrie barcelona i just wanted to say one thing because we talked about our vision of a lakewood graduate a lot and it was developed by people in the community businesses but it's not just like a slogan it's it takes such hard work on the part of educators to build
this and nurture this and get kids to have experiences so they develop these skills that we use every day if we're lucky and have them in the real world so i just i want to appreciate how much work it is to edge to truly educate and to thank you for that it's just great thank you thank [Applause] you before i go superintendent but guys as serving as a member of our buildings or sorry our district leadership team i'd also like to point out that when we talk vision of a graduate for our students realize the application of the skills that we talk about in vision of a graduate that our teachers put forth in order to pull this project together communication collaboration global awareness all of the skills we talk about that we want our
students to learn our teachers aren't just teaching they're modeling and demonstrating for our students so i'd like to again thank them for being role models for our students with vision of a graduate thank you i agree but you know our teachers today more so than any other time are preparing kids for jobs that aren't even created yet and they're re-engaging in their own learning to do that in order to teach kids how to continue to persevere through critical thinking because students will not go to school get a job and retire like so many of the past have done they will need to get a job and then relearn and get another job and relearn and so i am just i i've been blown away by so many projects within our school district so many of
our teachers here today do do incredible things for our kids to teach how to persevere through their life so uh thank you all elliot and peyton you too are very sharp and so impressed with you and i am sure your parents are very proud thank you for presenting tonight this is what school is all about so that concludes the superintendent's report thank you and we would at this point anyone who was recognized or presented are free to leave you may have work to do at home and so i'd like you to just feel that you can get up and go if you want we'll give you a few minutes we'd love to have you stay but i just don't want you to feel compelled okay we now move on to the um discussion of agenda
items um we'll present them now and then we vote on them in two weeks at our next meeting the first agenda items are around the finance report mr callahan thank you president chauncey the first item is investments purchased matured september of 21 tables as typical that are included in the agenda materials identify the investments that matured during that time as well as outstanding investments as of that time investment earnings for regular board funds for the month of september totaled dollars eighty-four cents um bringing our fiscal year-to-date earnings to ten thousand eight hundred twelve dollars seventy one cents next we have financial information uh through september the uh for the month of september general fund receipts totaled one million four hundred twenty thousand nine hundred dollars and general fund expenditures totaled five million five hundred fifty
six thousand four hundred twenty six dollars we also have a fiscal year 2022 summary uh the updated five-year forecast for fiscal year 22 will reflect various changes from 21. year-to-date variances through october do not reflect the updated five-year forecast per uh ohio revised code the five-year forecast for fiscal year 22 must be submitted by november 30th and may 30th of each year the five-year forecast is monitored on a monthly basis to evaluate any variances between actual cash flows and projected forecasted amounts key factors the inclusion of esser one two and three funds and the financial impact to both short-term and long-term strategies and initiatives in both personnel and non-personnel costs numerous changes made to state funding revenue calculations related tuition and student wellness expenditures in the recently passed biennial budget the district still is analyzing
the impact of these changes to the five-year forecast and we'll update the five-year forecast as more information is released by the ohio department of education and the corresponding impact is determined estimated to be released by ode in december we are pleased that cash reserves are sufficient through fiscal year 23 a financial summary report is provided to show the monthly and fiscal year-to-date cash positions for non-general funds maintained by the district as is typically stated in this report appropriation modifications will ensure we're in compliance with the state auditor's office and the county fiscal office and that all accounts have sufficient funds available to cover the increase in appropriations and that amendments amendment increases allow the district to legally encumber and pay funds up to the amounts appropriated and finally we have some information regarding the financial
advisory committee as a result of mr robert torock's term expiring on december 31st and the resignation of mr peter nelson two replacements will be needed on the financial advisory committee a request for candidates to fill those vacancies will be advertised shortly we of course wish to thank mr torak mr nelson for their commitment and and their valuable service on this committee and to the district they're both highly qualified and were wonderful in service both members instrumental in the passage of the 2020 combining operating permanent improvement levy they financial advisory committee's primary function is to serve in an advisory capacity to the treasurer to provide critical feedback to assist in the development of the five-year forecast as well as for presentations within the community or to service organizations and to serve as the district audit committee
um also to be aware of any you know questions or concerns uh that that come up from uh community members the committee had planned to meet on november 3rd however that meeting will be rescheduled for a later date that concludes my report unless there are any questions or miss weisbarth if you had anything to add any questions i was just going to comment i think miss i know mr nelson i think mr truck were original members of the committee and not only have they served well but they actually facilitated in informing the committee when we first began it they've been great made great contributions okay thank you very much mr callahan um next i would be building sites and major purchases mrs petrie barcelona it would be if i had anything to report but i
have no report this evening thank you thank you um we now move on to the education report since miss bibi is not here mr faber would you report thank you mr shaughnessy uh first we have field trips that we're being asked to approve and these are for eighth graders at harding and garfield the harding students are going to be going to washington d.c and gettysburg pennsylvania in may 4th through the 6th of 2022 and garfield will be going to washington dc and shanksville pennsylvania and that's planned for may 25th to the 27th then we have a number of clubs that we're being asked to approve the first one is called the be that person club and this club will be open to all harding students they will discuss explore and learn about various topics that
surround the concepts of the concepts of diversity equity and inclusion and students will create and deliver school-wide initiatives and strategies for students for student action that improve the school culture the next is the harding climbers and this will be also open to all harding students in partners with nasos well i'm going to get it wrong nosotros rock climbing gym and the gym will provide students with the opportunity to experience rock climbing at an affordable price in a local and safe location they'll meet weekly in the fall and spring to focus on skill building next is the harding garden club and that's open for harding students to learn about gardening basics creating maintaining a garden to build a community within the school printing ownership of beautifying harding's grounds and garden beds and they will participate in
weeding and bulb etc which we had mentioned of with one of our students earlier on and the next is the harding train club and that club will be open all harding students and the purpose of this club is to study and learn about types of trains and the types of trains located nearby and the history will be focused and i would like to volunteer to participate in that i was just signing you up the uh as many of you know i'm a a volunteer presenter for operation lifesaver which is a nationwide railroad safety program i teach a safety town and i'm also sort of a railroad historian and buff so i got a lot of stuff i'd be interested in doing there okay moving on the next is mindful mornings and that's going to be
in harding as well and it'll give students strategic strategies for staying calm clearing their minds and getting ready to learn students will participate in a reset style morning activity that includes yoga breathing activities and guided visual visualization to relax next also at harding is stars and the purpose of this club is to engage students in experimenting with rocket design and they're going to build and launch rockets and so we want to see that too then the final thing is gift to lakewood students and we would like to thank maureen walsh call for donating a bundy trumpet for the benefits of students in the lakewood high school marching band program and that concludes education thank you very much we have no policy changes to discuss at this time so we move on to human resources and
community services and that issue mr faber okay we're going to have a large certified action there's 300 actions in this and this has things ranging from leaves of absences appointments compensations and salary and pay rate adjustments we will also have a an action for five appointments for certified non-employees this is coaches and advisors under classified resolution with 19 actions that includes appointments and compensations and adjustments uh classified coaches and advisors there's 11 of those 11 appointments and then community recreation and education there's two actions one in aquatics and one in other programs and that takes care of that okay thank you very much we now come to some other board business and i believe mr favor that both of these elections are yours as well okay uh the first we have a the lakewood community
recreation and education commission interviewed several candidates tuesday october 11th and they voted to request that we the board appoint mr christopher maling as a commissioner to the lakewood community recreation education commission and that is to fill an open seat that will run through december 31st of 2024 and then we also have a memorandum of understanding between the lakewood city school districts and the lakewood teachers association we are being asked to approve that on one reading this evening correct and the board members have had that distributed to us in the past uh and it is just addressing all of the changes that we have going on in these times of the pandemic and so on that one we're going to do that tonight so i would move adoption of that resolution on one reading second it's
been moved and seconded that we approve this uh memorandum of understanding with liquid teachers association on one reading this would recall a roll call vote mr shaughnessy aye mr favor aye mr callahan aye ms petrie barcelona aye thank you and so that is approved and that concludes that report johnson thank you very much we now come to the communications portion of our meeting we look forward to hearing [Music] from anyone who cares to address the board i would say just to reiterate for people that haven't been here before this goes up to three minutes you don't have to feel compelled to talk for three minutes if you don't want to and we would ask that you were not asking that you give your street address we had a sign-in sheet we have people's streets and
where they live and we would i would ask that people address issues that are or have questions or comments about issues that are school issues which i think is how we have always gone in the past i just haven't specified that but this is a forum for discussing the school we won't answer right away but we will get back to you that's why we always ask for addresses so if someone had a question the appropriate administrator could look into it and get an answer back and we always like to hear opinions so we will start with that i am going to um there was one person who was on the list two weeks ago that i neglected to give a chance to talk i skipped over his name i see he's here tonight so michael
drops if you would care to be the first person to speak i apologize for that michael drops marlo avenue um i don't like to be first but anyway somebody has to be first i've been coming to school board meetings for probably the last 15 plus years and normally there's me and maybe two or three other people here unless we're honoring somebody so it's wonderful to see people at a school board meeting however it's also kind of upsetting when we have a bunch of people at school board meeting yelling at the school board because the school board is here to educate protect and provide health and safety for our students lakewood has about five five thousand students and when there's been people here there's been a large crowd there was a large crowd when we reduced
an elementary music teacher very very big issue that people had this time we're talking about an issue that the board really doesn't have much to do with they have to protect the health and safety of the kids i do not like wearing a mask i don't anybody that likes wearing a mask but it's the health of the kids i don't want to die from covert so i'll wear a mask okay but the issue is if you don't if you as a parent don't like the school district the state of ohio has provided you with many options you can homeschool you can ask for a voucher you can go wherever you want to go the board has to take every student that walks in the door they don't have a choice they have to educate anybody
that walks in the door so if you're uncomfortable please go someplace else because the other other parents are comfortable and we should go with that so if we really want to talk about issues there's a house bill called house bill that's going to take your money give it to the kids and go wherever they want that's what we should be fighting about we should be fighting about report cards all the money has been wasted for the last decade two decades on no child left behind and when we left all the kids behind if we want an issue to fight let's pick something that's valuable we will get through the virus and covet if we all work together and do what we need to do if you want to go to a show you're going to
wear a mask my daughter works for the browns she has to wear a mask when she's working the people don't but she does because it's the safety everybody's concerned about and let's get over this and let's do what we need to do to get over this whole thing and go back to whatever normal is nowaday thank you thank you [Applause] okay next person on my list is william young i'd like to thank that kind gentleman for speaking i think he speaks for a lot of us here in the lakewood community uh so i would actually like to ask about the out-of-state field trips uh what measures are in place to protect students because i i think i might have missed that portion of the meeting i had nosebleed i'm wearing white masks so it wouldn't
go very well so uh like would the students be required to wear masks do we have do you have jurisdiction over that across state lines we like i said we tend we're not going to be answering questions from here but your questions reflected and we'll get the information to you thank you thank you uh also i've seen some minor issues with mask uh what's the word enforcement here in the high school i just want to ask if there was any way you guys could just tighten uh just looks like someone forgot this out here i was just wondering if you guys would be able to tighten the restrictions and enforcement on masks because i know some people who are immune compromised so i just don't want them to be needlessly exposed if someone's mask just
gets pulled down during gym and they can't be bothered to pull it up my brother's going to be talking more about this later i believe so thank you thank you [Applause] okay next speaker is delano young uh hello i wanted to thank the school board for the mask mandate because uh i'm only here for homeroom through seventh period and i still have a lot of exposure with the packed hallways like always bumping into people in the cafeteria and like my brother said there's people who don't care enough to wear masks even after people tell them to pull them up and stuff and it's just they treat it like it doesn't matter because they think that the virus has passed even though it hasn't and their actions are lengthening how long it's going to take for
our community to recover and i just don't want to see our community damaged by other people's poor decisions thank you [Applause] um next speaker melissa here good evening my name is melissa hare and i'm the vice president of the lakewood teachers association the lta unequivocally supports the board's policy of universal masking in our schools and wishes to thank the board for implementing the prudent evidence-based policy through its policy of universal masking the board has taken one of the most powerful steps it can in protecting the health and well-being of everyone in our school community it is ensured educational access for those who are immunocompromised are at a greater risk of negative outcomes from covet infection or are unable to be vaccinated it has aligned itself with the overwhelming majority of scientific evidence it is acted
in line with the recommendations of our public health authorities such as the cdc and the american academy of pediatrics it has minimized disruptions to the educational process and it has enabled us as teachers to teach our students and our students to learn the lta's membership is thrilled to be all in with our students every day we deeply appreciate the board's commitment to the best practice of universal masking that has allowed us to enjoy this uninterrupted time with our students on behalf of our over 400 members thank you for protecting our students health and well-being thank you for protecting our students education and thank you for all that you do for the lakewood city school districts thank you [Applause] our next speaker is stephen kearney well we appreciate everything you said in your earlier speaking um
next speaker then would be dan bruce hello thank you for your time uh i don't want to make this meeting any longer but i i really just wanted to come after last month to say thank you just thank you so much for everything you're doing and i have three kids in the school district uh we moved here about four years ago uh we currently have you heard from my son from harding elliot bruce and this made his month he was terrified in the car he just thought he was going to forget everything and so and i have i have some younger kids at uh grants but um after last month and hearing all the stuff that happened i was just i'm i'm just terrified of these added stressors being you know included with what you
do and having to worry about stuff that you should not have to worry about so i'm just trying to show up to things and bring positivity so thank you very much [Applause] and let him know that he did really well next speaker is christina cabral my god the irony of the pledge of allegiance said here today the truth is out all this time you've been hiding under the us corporation it's about to get real hundreds of parents are about to serve you affidavits of truth and law and if it comes to that then no your lawyers won't be able to save you from treason for the record this mask is causing me harm and it's in violation of my unalienable rights you do understand the difference between operating under civil procedure jurisdiction versus operating under
the constitution of the united states of america right that you all took an oath to protect [Music] if it comes to court we're going after not only your bonds but your personal property your pensions your salary never to be able to hold office again the masses have finally figured out how to hold you accountable through the jurisdictions of the laws of the constitution through the declaration of independence where we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights remember those life liberty and the pursuit of happiness the rights people today refer to as civil rights you've been way too comfortable and distracted under ohio administrative law but recall what the constitution holds as organic law there are only two laws do no harm and do not trespass you are in violation of parents's unalienable rights
therefore you have caused harm this is treason against the constitution and you have gone to war against the constitution parents and numbers now have a simple step solution listen they have a simple step solution to remove you from office through the declaration of independence and unmask their property and we the people will prevail parents who want to send your kids tomorrow unmasked do it and report back to the assembly tomorrow school board members if you deny parents their unalienable right to choose whether or not to mask or unmask their property then you will be served like dominoes because you are committing treason against the constitution of the united states of america if you find yourself in court let me tell you a little secret your lawyers and the u.s corporation won't be able to help
you because you'll find yourself under the jurisdiction of the u.s constitution not under the jurisdiction of the ohio revised code under the corporation the us corporation you really should know the repercussions for the violations of your oath before it's too late do your one job and protect your unalienable rights because in court we'll make sure you can't hide behind the veils of the u.s corporation you'll be in the law of the land jurisdiction and you'll become their fall guys this is your first and last warning thank you very much [Applause] our next speaker mindy lewis board and fellow neighbors i graduated from the university of brockport state university of new york in 2011. i received a teacher certification in child general education and special education along with advanced studies and using the arts to teach
i brought with me tonight a very good book that i hope that you all please go get a copy of um i won't be able to go over a lot of it's obviously very big but i'm going to turn to milestones pages milestones of child development from ages 6 to 11. i'm just going to read off a few of the care sorry i can't breathe i just need a second um you know so they're developing physically cognitively they're developing language and they're develop developing emotional and social socially as well um and a lot of this development isn't something that is specifically taught it is something that develops over a collection of experiences and reflections on those experiences day in and day out i'm just going to jump to the older children really quickly and read
some of the emotional and social characteristics that are developing the self-concept becomes more refined who i am as a person and what that means in my community understanding positive and negative aspects of their personality their self-esteem at this age can rise and fall and they develop an ability to understand when they are being successful and when they are failing they also develop empathy for understanding each other and themselves and they learn how to problem solve and self-regulate their emotions now i ask you members of the board and members of the community at what cost are these masks having on your child's long-term development over time and is the science actually supporting it is it actually reducing transmission that's all i have thank you thank you [Applause] john deluca hello it's my first school board meeting
i just wanted to be sure that there was at least one voice in support of the masking policy i'm glad i wasn't the only one um but my son was remote his entire kindergarten year which was challenging for us and you know made learning more difficult for him we were hesitant about him going back into the school full-time and perhaps not getting terribly sick himself but bringing it home to his grandparents or his great-grandmother we found the announcement of the masking policy to be some comfort and been very happy to see that the uh transmission statistics have validated our relief it seems like it's going very well and we've definitely been able to relax a bit thanks to that policy just thank you for helping to keep our children healthy and safe and in the
school learning developing relationships with other kids and just not bending to this massive outrage misinformation campaign that's going on school boards nationwide thank you thank you [Applause] and that concludes oh there are okay sorry that does not conclude okay the next speaker is billy from nemo last time i was here i was requesting a budget allocation for the uh the funds and i know you just touched upon it uh i'm curious if the if the uh the budget report for the yes or funds for the american rescue act for the care act are they going to be alex are they going to be detailed for the 17 million dollars spent over the last four years i've read all the acts very lengthy but the theme of all the acts is they have to be tied
to covet relief so i'm curious if the 17 million dollars is going to be detailed in the budget report showing how the money is going to be spent uh specifically how it's going to tie into coveted relief it's a lot of money and hopefully i think you mentioned november 30th i will be looking forward to that um moving forward there's an old saying you know putting a screen door on a submarine doesn't make sense that kind of is relative to what we're here for why i'm speaking we're all wearing mass right now you take your finger you put it right there next to your nose there's a gap you think the virus is not getting out of that gap do you think air is not coming out of there you guys are putting a screen
door on a submarine these kids come here for seven hours after school i live right down the street they all rip their mask off immediately right after they walk out of this building they go to basketball practice they go to volleyball practice they go to their friend's house they go to the mall without their masks they're doing you guys are pushing part-time mask wearing what good is that doing i mean let's be let's be serious here what good is part-time mask wearing they come into this auditorium here it's probably three four hundred kids they take their masks off they're sitting next to each other eating and then they go back to the classroom wearing their masks this makes no sense this makes no logical sense whatsoever other than for the optics let's be real they're
not wearing their masks outside of the outside of the school now moving forward here i just found on the internet that there was a pilot study in warren county this was on the actual ohio department of health's website page and i'm going to read this real quick districts began lifting mandates after the ohio department of health released new guidelines that are based on data of a pilot program and 12 warren county schools participated that participated we found that the students were in direct contact 3 feet 15 minutes no mass unvaccinated when they met the criteria they participated about 97 percent of them tested negative as they went through testing protocols and they were able to stay in school can you wear your mask well everyone this evening has been talking with masks on including our
students so keep going glasses are fogging up so can you can i have 20 seconds back thank you continue talking though 97 of them were tested negative as they went through the testing protocol and they were able to stay in school said jonathan cooper superintendent of mason city schools there's the thing that's health up okay thank you it was in 20 seconds are you guys going to provide a deadline or some type of next speaker is rachel matthews can you remove this gentlemen next is rachel mathis she's looking i didn't see it excuse me put it on there right here excuse me your name is on here it what so it was a simple mistake it was not marked rachel mathis thank you i know many of us feel strongly in support of mass and
vaccinations and i personally want to acknowledge that we know this support comes from a place of unity and social responsibility but there are many reasons why a parent may want their child unmasked and the issues aren't as simple as just exercising a personal preference i've learned this from spending a great deal of time trying to understand what informs our decisions and i've found the more questions i ask the more i am astonished by the breadth of experiences that are inspiring these choices i've learned that people who choose to send their child to school in a mask or who choose to be vaccinated are not sheep who simply comply or bow down to authority they understand the dangers of covet 19 and don't want to see anyone suffer from it they believe in the greater good
and they're willing to make personal sacrifices in support of it they're not all liberals they're not socialists or communists either they've had family members who have suffered and died from covet 19. they've made what they believe is an intelligent informed decision parents who want the choice whether to mask their child or not or people who remain unvaccinated are not anti-masters or anti-vaxxers or conspiracy theorists they understand the dangers of masking their child all day or the dangers of novel vaccines that are approved at warp speed and they don't want to see anyone suffer from prolonged use of mass or possible adverse reactions to the vaccine they believe in the greater good which means we all benefit from the freedom of being able to make our own choices for our children and having medical freedom they're
not all conservatives they're not right-wing trump loving extremists or democratic or domestic terrorists they've seen their children suffer from the mass or be bullied for not wearing one they've had family members who have suffered and died from complications due to the vaccines they've made what they believe is an intelligent informed decision so which side is right to me based upon what i've learned and what history has taught us this isn't a question of trying to decide which group is right or wrong it's a question of whether we can peacefully and productively co-exist as i think about all of you as individuals i cannot come to any other conclusion that i can absolutely co-exist with each of you regardless if your child wears a mask or whether you're vaccinated what i cannot stand by is the
disregard for human value and basic decency in order to be normal by today's standards and accepted by your fellow peers you have to think just like them our leadership has normalized segregation firing people this community has normalized bullying and intimidation and has forgotten what it means to be a human and what it means to treat other humans with kindness and respect and most of all the importance of choice i can only imagine what our children are going through if this is how the adults are acting [Music] thank you next speaker is rosalind matthews my name is roslyn matthews lakewood resident i'm not going to belabor this i'm not going to use my full three minutes i'm going to keep coming to these meetings to let you guys know that i appreciate what you're doing to
protect my kids they're right back there you know they suffered last year being at home we're not in a financial situation to homeschool them at home we have two working parents you know and you guys are doing the best you can with risk mitigation which some people in this room do not understand risk mitigation you're reducing the risk of them getting sick and i appreciate that and i'm going to keep coming here as much as i can nights like tonight when i couldn't secure child care to let you guys know that thank you [Applause] um then well i'll go back to christy all right so this is on this is very emotional for me because i have friends on both sides i have friends who support and i have friends who are not for it
and i'm for freedom of choice and because of my freedom of choice i am viciously attacked i am bullied and i'm my family and i are threatened and i'm not kidding and mental health is so important when my warrior is short because mental health is so important so important for our kids when these children we're talking i want to say congratulations to stacy and your daughter stays he's such an important part she's such an important part of our family and i'm so happy for you and we're on the other hand but mental health is so important and when these kids were talking like i wanted my mask down so they could see me smiling when i see them talking okay i'm sorry i know i'm gonna you guys are gonna eat coffee from me doing
this i understand i understand this is gonna give you covet but i wanted them to see how important it is to see a human smile that's all i'm saying it's important to see a human smile that's all it's very important for mental health to see reactions and stacey knows she's a speech therapist like they know how important it is for you to see your face it's such an important emotional like development that's so important um i know there's other schools that do not mandate the mask and a lot of them and a lot of my my son hangs out and i know our a lot of our kids in lakewood hang out with a lot of other kids that don't have mask mandates at their school and i'm so sorry that i think anybody would
think it would be okay to like put harsher punishments on a child for wanting to be able to pull their mask down to breathe because it's hard to breathe i i wear a mask all day it's hard for me to breathe my man's going in i pull it down to breathe and if i want to risk myself i guess i'm risking myself it's such freedom of choice that i'm fighting for i'm feeling of a choice for you do you i can do me if you want me to homeschool that's fine you can homeschool too like why is it why do i have to homeschool why can't you i mean there's two sides of this right and i i'm just asking for respect and understanding mental health and how cruel this world has gotten it's not
okay it's not okay this world has gotten so cruel and i'm not okay with this the anger instead ah but i know i have like a couple things left but i know you i don't know how you nominate teachers but i want to nominate cheryl smallin she's amazing and i want to nominate her for a teacher of whatever i can nominate her for because she's the best human being on the planet so i want to name nominate cheryl small and i hope she's not embarrassed to be associated with me because people are now and it's not okay okay thank you thank you and our last speaker is from massillon it's the distance david ronald roberts is that right how you doing i'm with the ohio state journal assembly and i'm here to inform you that
public safety is not one of your enumerated rights as the state government i'm also going to talk about the organic law which is the declaration or yeah the declaration of independence which was written on july 4th and that law states that we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal all men are created equal and that there are certain unallegable rights which are endowed by our creator so our unalienable rights are by our creator not by the institution of men so the the governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the government so you guys have one job and you only have one job and that job is to protect the people's unalienable rights not to instill anything other than that so when you violate unalienable
rights you are committing treason upon the people they then goes on to state that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends which is life liberty and pursuit of happiness that's you guys this government is the right and the duty of the people to either modify you or abolish you and we have the right to do that we have the right under your oath of office under article 6 of the constitution the third paragraph of article 6 of the constitution states that any executive or judicial officer of the government who violates their oath of office you're bound by your oath of office and you're under your oath you have a bond and your bonds in jeopardy when you violate your oath of office you're also held accountable under the 14th amendment because when
you violate your oath of office you're committed treason upon the land and it states that under section three any executive or judicial officer of the state of ohio to support the constitution of the united states shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof section 4 states that any executive officer insurrection or rebellion of the united states or any claim for loss or emancipation of slave but any debts obligation claims legal or void and you forfeit your salaries thank you and your pension and i believe on that note we've ended the comments for the evening but i normally ask board members first if they have received any communications and so i'll do that i'm neglected to do that miss featured barcelona no communications i guess
just big picture just the reminders for the community overall tomorrow kids don't come to school so just remember that because it's a professional day i and just i guess big picture just noting that i think it had already passed by the time we met our second meeting last month but as you all recall last month was there was just some you know strangeness um just want to thank everybody for a great first quarter all in all we're now in our second quarter moving into the end of the year and just just really um thankful for the effort that all of our educators and staff are putting in the effort that all of our students are putting in into the year and to the experiences that they're having and i just want to say just as
a parent overall i'm just really just really grateful for this experience that we have so that'll be it thank you mr chan said i just want to acknowledge that we all received a email from a number of emerson parents who are concerned about traffic problems traffic light and student movement at the nicholson detroit waterbury detroit area and that we did receive it and that will be referred to the appropriate uh uh agencies to to take or to look into it so great thank you mr killhan thank you and i would just uh add to mr faber that there has been you know quite a response on that email uh string with various uh leaders both from the city administration as well as other organizations you know involved dialogue and work toward perhaps addressing some of
those concerns uh adequately uh those are some some great uh emerson uh parents uh as as you all know my uh kids attend or attended emerson and uh we certainly appreciate their efforts to maintain a safe uh a path to school and safety in the community i also wanted to add that i certainly appreciate that the general respect that our attendees and that our speakers had tonight for the work of the board but also for the important forum that our public comment period allows so we i certainly appreciate that um i had a couple other notes here just a note of with a good number of teachers in attendance just a a a thank you to to you all um for your support you know we had uh and for all that you do we
had parent-teacher conferences last week and and i was just just reminded uh at ours kristen and i were just at how grateful we are for for you for the work that you do um you know for for all of our for all of our children we also i also certainly appreciate your your support of of the board um wanted to just acknowledge our fall uh athletes and band participants who have concluded or soon will their their season and our winter seasons kind of getting getting underway and we certainly wish wish them uh the best and just a note of thanks to to our pto ptas there's been a lot of excellent activities tonight we had a rescheduled fall fest at emerson i i will say i was not the best dressed but perhaps the most
formally dressed there as i was there prior to uh coming over there were some fantastic costumes uh the point though is just that because of the support of the pto those types of great events are are uh able to take place so i think that that'll do it thank you um okay then i would just ask you to leave please if you're not wearing a mask you need to leave i took an oath to take care of this school district and you need to go if you're not wearing a mask excuse me can you help thank you just help this lady find the door or put your mask up i'm happy for that um eddie communications so i wanted to share with the board and i had left it out of my update um as
i sent out to you on monday we had moved to on tuesday the mass to stay in test to play as instituted as we found out on monday from the ohio department of health and the department of education so thank you i would just say tonight we had such a great example of seeing the substantive work that's going on in the school district and that teachers are doing and that our students are taking advantage of and families and i want to end on the note of all those skills our students are learning i'm so happy to be i have received communication saying is it stressful to be on the board i couldn't be happier than to be seeing the work and trying to facilitate the work of this district and so congratulations to all of
you who make it work students and staff and parents and all of this group so thank you and on a good note thank you for coming and this was a good way we heard a lot of different views and it was in a civil manner and i'm very pleased that we were able to do that so thank you all very much and is there a motion to adjourn second it's been moved and seconded all in favor aye aye aye and we are now adjourned thank you very much you
