but there are countless hours our volunteers do for this district and they're always willing they always show up they speak up and they really want the betterment for every child so it's a it's a great partnership thank you thank you thank you okay board members will then return to the regular regular agenda and the next item on the agenda is the adoption of tonight's agenda and can we have a motion in that regard so moved second okay motion by mr callahan the second by mrs bibi any discussion okay mr zeman will you call the roll mr favor aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms peter barcelona aye motion carries uh next item is the approval of the minutes and folks we have three here that i think we can probably handle all in one
motion if you're so inclined it's the minutes of the meeting of august 2nd august 16th and august 30th so we could entertain a motion in that regard i move approval of the minutes second okay motion by mrs petrie barcelona is taken by mrs bibby any discussion okay hearing none all those in favor say aye aye opposed and that motion carries so next we go to the superintendent's report good evening vice president favor mr zeman board members i have a few different updates today and one i did um add some slides to for this because it is pretty comprehensive so our number one goal as always the safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority trying to educate during a pandemic continues to have its challenges but our administrators and staff continue
to adapt to ensure our students are provided with the best education possible i wanted to share with the board and others where you can find our most updated information on kovit in our procedures the following is the link to our district web page here you can find data information on the number of cases that we have at each of our district buildings this information is updated each day because we are wearing mask at this point we do not need to track quarantines and you will see why as i continue on along with the dashboard you will find our 2021-2022 school year plan within this document you can read about mass requirements e-learning information safety protocols suspected illness protocols we have new information on quarantine guidance which i'll talk more about in a minute covet student
reporting forms an faq and additional resources so what can we continue to do to help lessen the likelihood of quarantine we can choose to get vaccinated if we're eligible we can wear our masks while we're indoors and we can keep at least at least three foot distance as much as possible additionally i have been asked about quarantining and our protocols for quarantining students this information has been ever changing we just received a clarifying document last tuesday from the state quarantine is not required if a direct contact has no symptoms and any of the three criteria below are met [Music] the direct contact is fully vaccinated or the school requires mass maintains physical distancing and has documented covet 19 prevention plans in place or in schools that do not have mass requirements the direct contact was
wearing a mask and maintained physical distancing of three feet or more the state document goes on to share the following guidance to help slow the spread if you were vaccinated but in direct contact get tests tested three to five days after exposure wear a mask until negative test results received if you are unvaccinated but in direct contact get tested at least five days after exposure wear a mask until negative test results received those not meeting the above criteria must follow quarantine procedures this is why we're seeing throughout the state so many schools having to change their mass masking mandates or protocols because they have too many students quarantining a district close to me had over 300 students quarantining which is really difficult for them for them to receive then remote learning or in school learning
when that's occurring and if they don't have that in place wearing mass right now allow our students to stay in class while the delta variant runs its course the following helps to point out our process for case reporting contract tracing and quarantine so for example we have a positive cases reported to the school the school officials begin contract contact tracing process school health professionals and administrators determine level of exposure and decides if the closed contact needs to quarantine points to consider in determining exposure level determine whether the direct contact was wearing a mask and then assess direct contact's level of exposure determine if they spent more than 15 minutes and were less than three feet from the cakes direct contact therefore receives the email so another example of this is i can be in a
class of 20 but we have tried to do three foot distancing when possible and most of like so for example our elementary classrooms can do that we also have asked our teachers not to bring kids necessarily into small groups together because then you fall into a potential quarantine situation if somebody was to have a positive covet 19 test therefore i can be in a class with somebody that it has a covet positive test but i may not receive that letter because i was never within three feet of that student or adult so this is how i get through this it's etch-a-sketch leadership the years of educational leadership where the state and the county continue to revise clarify and strongly recommend week weekly and often after the school year has begun this sets into motion local
districts having to shake their original documents and redraft so we appreciate our lakewood families and we thank you for your patience because i am sure that we will continue to receive more clarifying documents as we continue to go on which will only make us continue to have to adapt our documents to comply so that is my first update i have any questions i mean i know you don't have it live right now but how how have the counts been in our schools so far the last time i checked the entire district we had 10 covet positive cases the highest it's been in the last few weeks from my account when i when i've looked at it has been up to 14. okay the highest number i believe in one building alone has been four or
five i know four but i want to say five stuck in my head too okay this this isn't public comment period thank you linda did you have a question that i guess i guess my question is and i think the statistics look to bear it out but that we're not seeing four or five in one room we're getting incidental uh cases which would seem to indicate to me anyway that these are coming in from the outside not coming from another students in the same class correct is that the sense that you have too yes that's it that's absolutely what it's looking like and the other thing is it's looking as if because we're not getting multiple positive cases within classrooms that the mass for whatever reason is in the distancing is helping us right now
right ed did you have okay another update i had the community recreation and education commission has been working on revising their updated bylaws and in your packet today is a first read of their bylaws that is a new revision and the last revision has been years and years ago they have spent a few months working on it and so they're pleased to be able to share those with you today as a first read and finally we have completed our joint agreement with the city this agreement has been worked on for the past few months in addition to this agreement we have begun to revise our organization model in partnership with the city and and those conversations that we have had with our letter of intent with the city to work through our pools and baseball
fields management have been well worth it we have spent many hours looking through these documents trying to come to an agreement mainly these documents are more of the fiscal piece of it but as we continue further on down in the next few months there's going to be plenty of opportunities for our community to share their thoughts on how we can continue to better ourselves with community recreation and education in the city of lakewood any questions [Music] i do if i could go ahead superintendent will there be there will be an opportunity for my correct um public uh comment or questions in regard to the agreement with the with the city and will that be at an upcoming community recreation education commission meeting the next meeting i don't believe is before the second read of this
but if anyone has any questions they can reach out to us myself leslie favor krogeman or city representative to discuss their concern thank you all righty then we move on now to the discussion of the agenda items that we'll be we'll actually act upon at the next board meeting the second meeting of the month and as usual the first would be financial report mr callahan but i think thank you and there is not a financial report this evening due to the timing of end of fiscal year so july and august reports will be forthcoming thank you mr callahan next then would be building sites and major purchases thanks mr faber there is no report for this committee thank you okay we we will be hearing from you later on in other board business though the
next then is discussion of the education report mrs beebe teaching and learning have obviously been working while everybody else is taking time off okay we have a number of items actually the agreement between laker board of education and the parents of a third grade student to provide attendance services have they've reached an agreement whereby the services will be provided by the mother and the educational assistant assigned will be our building health care or health aid from the building and this is agreed to meet the health and safety needs of that particular student the next is an agreement between board of education and gcl education services gcl education services provide special education services in a day treatment center setting for students whose needs require specialized services beyond what the district can provide the next item similar
is an item between agreement between the board of ed and belfair jcb monarch school we have a student with autism attending belfair jcb monarch which is a day program that serves children on the autism spectrum belfair monarch school will provide special education and related services for that student and again as they say these are students who need specialized services beyond what we're able to provide in-house the next item is a resolution to approve two clubs at i believe lakewood high school the e m power club its main purpose is to empower the women of lakewood high school to strive for excellence and help them reach academic personal and financial goals as young adult women their activities for the year include creating posters writing letters to female staff members to show appreciation self-reflection letter writing and
popcorn style talk activities then we have s f f s o mindfulness and movement club the club's purpose is to give students and staff tools to help them de-stress and become more mindful there will be weekly meetings to give students the opportunity to learn relaxation skills next item is the memo of understanding between lakewood board of education and asian services in action inc for the 2122 school year we've been working with asian services inc to provide services to our el students for a number of years now and this contract represents a continuation of that academic support through after-school programming specific arrangements for programming were developed between asia inc and our in-house staff and the contract represents a partnership with no costs associated so that'll be the items that we'll be discussing or will be approving
next week okay the next item the next items would be policy and we have no report there so we're going to move on then to human human resources and community services and back to you mrs bibi okay again we have a number of items as you might expect this time of year we have a total of 204 certified staff actions these are appointments special compensations leave of absence etc the second item is a certified non-employee coach appointment one of those and then we have a resolution to approve additional classified administrative position and there's one of those and we have classified 81 actions appointments special compensations and paid right adjustments certified non are classified non-employee coach advisor seven of those and then community rec and education have 21 items that hires for this for the season
most of those being event staff for the upcoming i would suppose football and basketball seasons and that would conclude that report okay thank you mr bibi board members questions okay and we now move on to communications and that starts with the members of the board and i'd like to just take take a moment to thank our staff our teachers everybody in the district that's really working very hard to have the kids in school this the the added level and the added layer of responsibility and work that involves this whole covert situation that we're in as uh superintendent nizwiki pointed out a little while ago in her presentation really does put a an added layer of work on the staff in that but we're all working very hard to achieve our main goal which to have
the kids safely and healthfully in the buildings because we know that that is the best place to conduct school and education other board members any comments i had i had one phone call from a parent thanking me for the mask policy and for her ability to send her child to school and just feel comfortable that that child was going to be safe and would be back in the classroom learning and then the second one was was just ran into a family here out taking a walk the other day and i will say that the kids were just practically jumping up and down with excitement that they were back in school and i said do you mind wearing a mask and they said i don't know and then there was a little argument about which of
the kids had the better mask and i got the sense that they weren't particularly bothered except by anything other than her brother had a mask that she coveted so that was that was reassuring very good other board members anything okay superintendent treasurer anything else okay this then is the opportunity to the for the public to address the board all that we asked you to do is step up to the mic uh clearly identify yourself name address and try to keep your comments limited to the three minute that we're supposed to do but we appreciate hearing from you good evening treasurer zieman superintendent zwicky members of the board my name is william frondfelder i live at 1428 west clifton boulevard currently serving as a commissioner for the community recreation education commission i feel compelled to speak
to you this esteemed board this evening concerning the current service level agreement currently being negotiated by ms krogeman and the administration with various members of city council negotiating on behalf of the city of lakewood i'm speaking this evening as a commissioner of c-rec tasked by this board to advise and direct the programming of our recreation department as codified by board resolution 9601 the quandary our commission faces in light of this negotiation is the manner in which our resident customers are being represented in these discussions one side of this negotiation cannot argue in good faith that their position is apolitical for our community and strive to speak to the general needs of our communities recreational programming and in this case i'm speaking to the city council where they have no experience delivering any such things the
board's representatives on the other hand have not been tasked by this board to concern themselves with the non-professional perspective of reviewing different possible outcomes not tied to budgetary constraints nor the fact that many of the board's negotiators themselves are not liquid residents but our employed representatives tasked with decision-making utilizing assumptions of our best interests it is this very reason c-rec has been predetermined by you the lakewood board of education to be the codified body that is best suited to review and recommend any and all recreational service level changes in the city in the use of city-owned facilities the administration maintenance and programming of the city-owned pools is a perfect example of this commission oversight working properly in summary i ask that the service level agreement involved review by the c-wreck for additional resident and taxpayer
debate prior to recommended adoption by the administration and the full approval of the board thank you for your time thank you mr thank you any others hey here you go i take this off the top we're going to leave it on while you're standing still okay i just want to make sure you can hear me i'm aj magner 15710 west shore court i understand the concerns that the gentleman spoke about involvement in the mou preparation process however i think where it is today i was able to download it from the city uh council meeting website i would support proceeding with it i think it's uh it's it's a good start to effectuate the remedial repairs that are required at the ball fields now and i also feel it's a good framework for the eventual evolution
and improvement of the relationship between you guys in the city over time i think to start the cast stones at it now when we haven't had any kind of formal documentation over the last three or four decades would be unproductive at this point so i would encourage you guys to as it stands today approve it and let's get on with the real results which is fixing the fields relative to [Music] that topic and the mou i'm fully supportive of the recrowning works proposed in the mou however i think the board needs to hold the city the stakeholders that use the facilities as well as its staff accountable for making sure that those recrowning projects or the immediate projects are able to be completed before the start of baseball and softball season we have about 60
work days left this year for outside work we can't work in december or january or february so the board needs to hold staff accountable and staff needs to communicate with stakeholders to get the rfp done the landscape architecture guys have hired to complete the scoping work it's not rocket science they're not sending something to mars this is pretty easy cut filled compaction work in the soil and they get the backfill done so that the fields can withstand the winter that's going to be coming i also encourage that a timeline be presented to stakeholders so that we're not bugging you guys all the time about what's going on right and let's update that timeline ms krogeman and dr palumbo have agreed to meet with me next week i'm going to try to help share some experience
i have with construction in terms of how to construct that and and present it to stakeholders so that there's proactive communication going on about the project the final thing i'd like to talk about is the c-rec meeting that i participated in the other day um the c-rec meeting was a little frustrating and disappointing frankly uh the superintendent directed us there to say the c-wreck was the board within which we could be heard and listened to and uh frankly by some of the uh participants on the c-rec board we didn't feel welcomed at all we felt as though we were taxing uh some participants for their time they you know was discussion about uh about not being made aware of what was going on i think one of the folks was complaining about like this new
topic there were specific comments to me that um you know i know aj i have no idea why he's here other than general things out there in the world it was a bizarre circumstance as a citizen trying to present and contribute to progress and improvement and uh it was very disappointing it's very disappointing i i have some other elements i think there's some other folks here that were there that had an equally frustrating experience so i would invite one of you guys to show up at the next direct meeting i think some decorum and in control of the agenda and control the dialogue would be good there's a lot of sidebars there seem to be some bantering or uh or bickering among parties there's also some political statements statement about you know this comes up
every four years during city council elections or something well uh that's kind of insulting to me i'm not sitting there trying to get a city councilman elected or someone else reelected right i'm there to try to get the baseball fields fixed um the final is there's also a comment by one of the commissioners that said that you know oh that's that was the word hoodwinked was you like we were hoodwinked by the council to come in and and complain about the wall fields there was also a statement that we uh could you re could you wrap it up so we can oh sorry thank you last issue was uh anyway it's okay okay well the last item was just about um you know that somehow the folks that showed up who were all very polite
and frankly waiting their turn to contribute to the dialogue that we had hijacked the c rec meeting and had the agenda changed and it couldn't have been further from the truth it was it was frankly just insulting and and i've said it it was a very disappointing experience for us okay thank you thank you there was somebody else that was who was gonna who's gonna speak next i think okay hi julia took 1682 parkwood um i was also at the c-rec meeting last week and i uh i'm not going to talk about that first i'll talk about that a second like aj i read through the mou that's what i'd like to speak about today and first of all i want to applaud both the city council and the school board for first of the
rapid nature in which this memorandum of understanding has been put together it definitely shows the commitment to the city of lakewood the youth and the adults in getting this under um way i do have a number of questions about it and um you know some some language concerns and some things that are just there's just a couple inconsistencies in there and one of the major things is that i just want to make sure that although the fields are critical like aj said and i know that we're going to have um you know it's probably going to go to committee in the city council um and there's going to be other public comments some revisions and things like that hopefully that we want to make sure that this is all encompassing for all of the recreational
properties within our city the fields are critical and my son is a 13 you champ this year and um so i've got you know a little highlighted copy that i know that you maggie said that i'm sorry superintendent um you said that you were open to comments and i'd love to share a pdf with some of those and then i do want to speak on the c-rec and although i think that committee is a fantastic idea and and actually i have applied for the open position because i was so enraged by the level of decorum and public involvement that was that happened at the last meeting that was the first meeting that i went to um and i'm hopeful that my chances and if not even if i don't get it i'm going to continue
to stay involved in sub-committees and so on and so forth but what i've seen here between the school board and the city council because i've spent a lot of time with those folks over there is really a spirit of collaboration and what i saw at c-rec was hostility a lot of blaming and a lot of anti-city council and so while i understand the commissioner's request to review this mou and i think ideally they should be involved in that i think to get this mou passed you guys have done a really good job doing that and until there's better oversight in c-rec i think that it's good you guys have got it handled that's my opinion thank you thank you was there somebody else uh yes my name is johnny miller i live on mckinley avenue
superintendent zwicky vice president favor board members i stood here in front of you on august 2nd to address the return to school policy that the district was implementing at that time it has since changed i spoke that night with the thought that you as a collective body were doing uh what was right for our children uh and making informed and up-to-date decisions based on the most recent statistics that was being provided to you i stand here today with additional questions about the motives that are actually driving some of those decisions after spending the last month researching and looking into the matter there's only one thing that i can really come up with and that's money federal funding now what i didn't know a month ago was that the district was receiving what about 10 million
or so from the federal government to help us institute our return to school safely plan out of the american rescue plan the arp funds now i do want to thank superintendent zwiki for responding to some questions that i had an email from friday so thank you very much that cleared some up and the additional information you provided this evening was very helpful i'm going to go ahead and read the comments that i had in the questions that i had understanding that some of the information that you know i was inquiring about has been addressed but a few of my questions were what exactly went into the decision process as a board collectively when you guys were making that initial decision about how we were going to you know re start the school year what information
was was used and where did you guys get that information from were these peer-reviewed medical studies that potentially swayed your decision-making regarding whether or not we should mask our children is this information that's solely come from coming from the cdc or from the state or from the county i'm not exactly sure if there was a deadline to receive these arp funds that we had to supply our plan in june how was it possible then that we were making the most up-to-date and using the most current statistics and information if we had to apply for this funding back in june from when our kids were going back to school in august it seems to be a disconnect there to me now we were going to start the year with mass being optional for half of the
district and all of our faculty and then that changed so i'm very interested in knowing what changed what happened that made us change from what we initially thought was the right plan to start the school year to then changing it to enforcing the mass mandate for everybody in the district all right so um you know again i think the decision should solely be up to the parent and to decide what they want for their children and again the option to have it was taken away from the entire district at that time now another question i had was in relation to the money that we are receiving from these our funds is there going to be some sort of a link like a transparency link or something that would be on the school website that might
allow us parents to see where all of the funding is being directed what it's being spent on as a parent i would love to know if we're taking money from the federal government how it's being spent to better the life of my child in the liquid school system so that's pretty basic question okay thank you and the last thing i'd like to leave you with is as far as i can tell we really only have two ways out of this current situation and that would be for the district to either deny federal funding or for us to wait and until the cdc decides that they're going to change the guidelines or guidance that we're seemingly operating under so my question is is there a limit to what we won't do to these kids if federal
funding is involved is there a line that we will not cross for our children if we're offered a lot more money from the federal government will we begin to mandate vaccinations for all children to attend this district i'll leave you with that thank you [Applause] thank you for having us here my name is billy fronomo clarence avenue i'm going to echo some of the things that john mentioned and i have some additional comments that i want to bring up i have a formal question and it's it's like what john said i would like to know the data the process the science of how you guys arrived to this decision of mandating masks to our five-year-olds or ten-year-olds or twelve-year-olds across the board specifics discussions debates where you guys came to this conclusion hopefully there was
discussions amongst you and it just wasn't some frivolous decision based on the cdc's recommendation because i do know other school districts are not following the cds recommendations and they're not mandating masks so i'd like to know the process i'll provide you guys with my email and contact info and if you guys can get back to me or us on that that would be much appreciated other other than that i have to arrive at the conclusion that this decision is based on money it's based on 10 million dollars because if it's based on stats if it's dates based on data if it's based on science i can't find it i've been all over the cdc website i've been all over the internet looking for data that supports this mandated mask policy and i actually brought some
here and it's it's overwhelming and maybe if i'm missing something i would like to be provided with that information but here's some stats for you guys to think about in the state of ohio in almost two years only .04 of kids under the age of 18 have contracted covid i'll repeat that.04 less than half a percent of the population of 18 and under has contracted covin that's not a big number at all and of that point zero four percent point zero zero eight percent have been hospitalized there's two hundred and 000 kids that are under 18. we're talking a couple hundred kids have been hospitalized there's been two deaths in the state of ohio two two too many but there's been two deaths in the state of ohio point zero zero eight percent of kids
have been hospitalized that is not a big number at all that is not a number to justify putting these dangerous masks on these kids and this isn't about the kids wearing masks or not wearing masks and being uncomfortable it's about the health it's about the the detrimental effects that these masks are having on our kids there's going to be all kinds of science they're going to talk about it these these masks are creating bacteria they're creating low levels of oxygen they're creating uh carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide they're creating psychological effects have you guys looked at the data i hope you have of the the negative effects that these masks are creating for these kids wearing them for eight hours a day what's kind of funny and hypocritical is when i arrived here 80 percent
of you guys weren't wearing masks everybody was outside talking we don't wear a mask when we go to home depot we don't wear masks when we go to walmart we don't wear masks to go to target i drove by the high school the other day nobody was wearing masks in the stadium nobody's wearing masks in little league baseball nobody's wearing masks anywhere else but we're going to subject these kids to wearing masks eight hours a day that doesn't make sense thank you very much one more comment completely because the other guy had a little additional time please please wrap it up i will and you know what that's my bad if i let somebody go too okay that's on me 30 seconds here's some other stats uh of the of the 21 of all the
cases point zero zero eight percent have coveted across the board that's the average so where is where is the path that you guys arrive to this i can come to two conclusions one it's either the money or two we're using our kids as shields to protect the greater population that would be fine if there was no detrimental effect to the kids wearing the mask please please please wrap it so i would i would appreciate if let us know is it the money or is it we're using our kids as shields to protect the greater population the adults can fend for themselves sure sure not please kids please i will do not put these kids in harm's way to protect our to protect adults would you please please it's irresponsible it's nice will you please follow
the rules would you please follow the rules thank you my name is rachel mathis i live on armand avenue a common concern i've heard is that our children need to wear masks to do their part to protect the vulnerable and for the greater good of the community however i have 47 studies here mainly from the nih that demonstrate that mass do not prevent the spread of viruses our children are also not asymptomatic super spreaders history and science show that in order to transmit a virus you have to have a lot of that virus which inevitably results in having symptoms and if you're symptomatic you're at home so this idea of masking the well to protect the community defies common sense and furthermore society nor school board does not have the right to require medical intervention
which a mask is on an individual for the benefit of society and if you are mandating a mask for the benefit of others then it needs to be certain that the risk of masking our children all day has zero risk numerous studies have shown that extended mass wearing can lead to increased and dangerous levels of carbon dioxide in the blood and decreased levels of oxygen which can lead to drowsiness dizziness headache shortness of breath reduced hearing increased heart rate and blood pressure and so on what are the long-term effects of this repeated exposure and deprivation over time studies also show mass are breeding ground for bacteria to grow especially as they become moist tested mass have found parasites fungi pneumonia causing bacteria meningitis and pathogens that can cause fever ulcers and toxicity affecting the gums
and throat studies also show that mask squares run the risk of breathing in carcinogens allergens and even tiny microplastics in the surgical mass which may cause long-term damage to the lungs my children are in kindergarten and first grade and have little to no experience on a normal childhood education how is that fair facial expressions are integral to human connection and young children are still learning how to signal fear confusion and happiness covering a child's face mutes these nonverbal cues and can lead to anxiety depression and mental health disorders suicide rates in young girls has increased over 50 percent since last year and if you're 50 since last year and if you're going to mandate our children wear this medical device where is the informed consent listing all the risks and benefits and any possible side
effects of a child wearing a mask for seven to eight hours a day so are you willing to take on the liability for any adverse effects on our children's health because it's public record that lakewood may have received 10 million dollars from the american rescue plan and esser fund to force our kids to wear masks but i'd be concerned that you and school boards across the nation are opening yourself up for future litigation and personal injury claims for any long-term adverse effects on our children's health so it's not a question of who is right about mass but rather who's right it is and i think we can all agree that no one cares more about the health and well-being of a child than more than a parent so i think we should leave it up
to the parent to decide if they want their children to wear a mask okay thank you thank you [Applause] good evening members of the board superintendent nizwiki mr zieman my name is jesse holland i live at 2053 arthur avenue as an educator and a parent i would like to thank you thank you for instituting a mask mandate and upholding a masked mandate in all of our school buildings for the people that are there that is a part of caretaking thank you would you please go to the mic do what everybody else does go to the mic identify yourself as we as we do i'm sorry my name is christy you know me i live on arch show i've been here many times you guys know me i'm sorry you know me and i just printed
up some stuff for you am i not allowed to do now on it i printed i printed out i actually printed some articles up for you guys that's all i was going to do okay yeah i'll put them here okay okay thank you um yes we are here to speak against masks with about unmasking our children um there is many many studies stating that masks are very unhealthy for our children my daughter's masks are in my car because i was nervous when i got here she's eating through her masks my daughter is literally chewing her masks the inside of her mask she's eating them do you guys understand how unhealthy that is for my non-verbal child who does not speak to eat her mask i have studies that i have printed up for you guys
right there that my child who is eating her masks how dangerous that is for her it is not okay i'm not okay with this it says surgical and cloth masks they currently are they have no impact on controlling the virus at all there is so many evidence there's so much evidence that states that masks do not protect our children against anything it is more harmful my children complain of headaches they complain of dizziness my daughter cannot speak and she's so compliant that she will wear her mask and when she gets home she ate it do you do will you eat your mask i ask you guys after this meeting maybe go wear it for six hours and maybe you guys can chew through your mask and then when you guys go home eat it i
want you guys to eat your masks like my daughter does my non-verbal daughter does she eats it it's not okay it's not it's really honestly not when she is a compliant human because she wants to be like her friends and her other kids in her classroom i understand people are scared this world has instilled fear into us and we are now succumbing to this fear and it's not okay we are able to stand up for ourselves we are patriots we are americans like we are allowed to have a freedom of choice we are allowed to have that i will stand up i will never stop fighting for our freedom of choice i'll never stop fighting for the fact that my daughter has a choice to wear a mask my son should have a choice to
wear a mask my neurotypical children should have a choice my i should have a choice if you want to keep your kid home and host homeschool them that's fine i'm okay with that if you want your child to wear a mask i am okay with that too i'm not mad at somebody if you guys want you to send your child in a mask i am okay with that i'm not angry with you i'm not angry with you for your views i'm asking you to respect me for my views and our views are that our children should not have to wear masks and we should have the choice that's all we're saying i have we have studies saying that they're unhealthy everybody's presented you with information saying that they're not healthy we could go on and
on you have studies saying your way we have studies saying our way i'm just stating that i honestly and i will never stop fighting for our choice and thank you for listening to me and i know it's my choice to come up here and i appreciate you guys i respect you guys i know we all have a job to do but thank you very much okay thank you [Applause] hello my name is brittany o'connor i live at 2173 mars avenue and i wasn't planning to speak i just wanted to come listen to the meeting today but i did want to take a minute to thank you all for continuing to follow the guidance of the cdc the ohio department of health the cuyahoga county department of health we know so much more now than we
did in march 2020 and i appreciate that you are continuing with the mask mandate so that we can keep our kids and families and our community safe now is not the time to let down our guard masks are an easy way to protect everyone i do want to you know invite families that aren't comfortable with the masks to take advantage of the e-learning option my family was has been very strict through covid and tried to you know keep our family members safe we've worn our masks we still wear them at home depot in giant eagle and we have are vaccinated because we're able to be and and my son stayed home remote all last year and we're excited to be back at school if you're not comfortable with the masks there's an e-learning option available
to you that's what i would suggest you look into i also invite people here who are concerned about the well-being of children to reach out to the rec department we're in great need of youth of volunteer coaches for our youth baseball teams that's one way you can help our kids reach out to your school district here and find out how you can serve as a reading tutor you know that would be a great help to the kids if you're interested in policy i suggest you check out mom's demand action find out how you can help keep our kids safe from gun violence in our community there's a lot of ways we can help kids but i thank you for sticking with the mass mandate i thank you for all the work that you're doing i
know this is above and beyond a lot of extra work i think our teachers thank you hello my name is donna parks i live at 2050 wyandot i have daughters in 11th grade and 5th grade i have a granddaughter in third grade i'm a single working mother and i was dragging my feet last year to send them back in person because i was nervous but now that they're here i want them to stay and if you look at the quarantine rules um you know you get if if you don't have masks and the children have an exposure in their classroom then they have to go home and stay home for two weeks and i'm not ready for that again so i appreciate the mass mandate thank you for following the american academy of pediatrics the
cdc the state board of health and the cuyahoga county board of health i think that is the appropriate thing to do i think in-person learning is the best option and a lot of the people that are against masks were also here last year demanding the in-person learning and i don't know if they realize that you might not necessarily be able to have no mask in in-person learning when your kids get sent home for two weeks because of an exposure so that's the quarantine rule i didn't make it up it is what it is and i want the kids to stay in school thank you thank you hi my name is valerie malinsky i live at 1480 clarence avenue i wasn't intending to speak today but i felt compelled to come up and tell you all
that i appreciate the continuation of the mass mandates some of the things i was thinking about when other people were up here was the discussion of data and studies and i've been following this all very closely i am like you none of you are epidemiologists or infectious disease people i'm your mortal who tries to understand and process this information and i don't know what y'all are meaning because the stuff i'm seeing from the cdc and the american academy of pediatrics says otherwise and that's mask safety for kids that's the numbers that are rising i watched last year as our numbers were low in the summer just like now and then they rose completely in november and december that's what's happening in florida georgia texas a lot of kids are hospitalized and constantly is referred to
the death count how how many and how few it is and i'm wondering how few is enough for a death count of children for me there's not that's not a negotiable item also sickness i've had coping i still have long covet issues i would not wish some of those cognitive issues or other physical issues on any child you talk about emotional problems and depression my father actually passed away from covid in november and this was before delta which is a game changer and it blows my mind that we're still here this next year still talking about it still masking because people don't care about their neighbors and friends and relatives what's really depressing for my kids and emotional is watching and saying goodbye to their grandfather via an ipad in the hospital on thanksgiving i
don't wish that on anybody i don't wish any deaths or sickness on these kids watching their teachers get sick or died any staff any other students and i just don't understand why we are continuing to have this discussion when the information and best practices of the american academy of pediatrics continues to say otherwise there's no data that shows these in a reasonable and intelligent way and i we're in the middle of a public health crisis short of vaccinations they talk about a swiss cheese approach which is basically yes masks don't work 100 but if you mask any distance and you have different pulls of different mitigation efforts eventually you create a wall that helps with the spread of the virus so if we can continue these mitigation efforts i will feel like my kids are
safe here at school i want them to continue learning in person and i want them to continue enjoying their schooling and without all of these i don't really know what else to say i don't understand why some of my fellow parents are so against keeping everyone as safe as possible thank you two or three two out of three parents support mask mandates and you're you're welcome to send me your data but ma'am ma'am can you please you're not at the mic can you please remain quiet can you please remain quiet thank you yeah my time's up no folks we're not going to argue here if you ma'am would you please remain quiet you're being very rude i wanted to thank you all for your time and your time is up so please wrap it up
i appreciate your attention tonight thank you be well thank you you know folks you're you're intentionally violating our policy sitting there without your masculine and we're tolerating it and you're being rude with your comments while the speakers at the mic so please stop or please leave but you have to be civil when somebody else is the mic there's there's plenty of people that disagree with your comments at the mic and they remain quiet you need to do likewise anybody else i'm sorry i'm sorry did somebody here okay go ahead hello superintendent board my name is sharon schultz i'm at 1284 bunce road i'd like to start by thanking each of you for making the decision in august to acquire masks for students at all levels thank you for following the cdc recommendations not to mention
the american academy of pediatrics and the american medical association what's clear is that we need to set aside our own personal feelings and continue to work for the good of the community as a whole especially for the vulnerable and those that have no choice yet on being vaccinated masks do matter it's one small thing we can all do to help alleviate the spread many universities and places of employment are now requiring vaccines and masks and we would be taking a step in the wrong direction if it was even considered to remove that requirement i was actually i just had covid last uh last week a few days ago i ended my quarantine my 10 year old son brought it home we're not sure where he got it it was uh it wasn't from school and
i got it i was extremely sick he was sick for a few days and then got better i'm vaccinated and i say this because here's why i think masks matter because i decided to quarantine with him because he's 10 years old and couldn't quarantine alone i was in a room with him without a mask on and i got copied the rest of my family my two older children and my husband did not get covered we were all in the same house all in the same situation except that i was in the room with him without a mask and that's you know to me one of the biggest reasons that i think masks matter i don't think i would have gotten it had i had i distanced from him and kept a mask on i did
actually recently email you guys while i was in quarantine and sent a couple articles one of the quotes from one of the articles public mask wearing is most effective at reducing spread of the virus when compliance is high this means that we need to continue wearing mass as a community we won't get anywhere if we take that requirement away and we may end up with so many kids out of school that we need to close like so many others already have which given that we've gotten rid of remote learning options i don't think that's something that we want to do so let's do what we can to keep them in the building with all the spikes and hospital beds shortage let's continue to do our part to keep our community safe and healthy thank you
thank you thank you anybody else you sir go ahead good evening i also wasn't planning on speaking today my name is john daters i'm at 1266 edwards i have a sonic grant and a daughter of lincoln i came to listen honestly i have my opinions i'm not here to convince anyone on this side i'm here to thank you guys you guys made the right decision you guys looked at data statistics care for our children god forbid that you're wrong and we still wear masks you're not hurting anybody if you think that masks aren't effective at preventing viruses you better tell your surgeon that because they've been wearing them for decades okay germ theory is real and these things work okay i want to thank you again for listening to the majority of parents and caring
for our children at the end of the day they're study this study that we're really focused on dunning kruger in a lot of these cases we're looking at confirmation bias when we're trying to find out something that fits one way of thinking versus the other we really should have an open mind on this and if we do look at international studies domestic studies the consensus is pretty damn clear and to the mother that said it earlier none of us are endocrinologists right we don't do our research we research other people's research but the best that's a meta-analysis we're not doing double blinds we're not running our own trials on future dishes let's trust the experts that are and the majority of experts that are i want to say thank you again for what you're doing
and keep it up thank you thank you i don't see anybody else there motion so i believe we're done okay all right we'll move on to the next party agenda which is other board business and that's going to go to mrs phibi yes thank you three items of other board business tonight and the first two will require roll call votes the first is requested approval on one reading for a certified employee resignation and i move approval of this resolution second okay a motion by mrs b b seconded by mr callahan mr zeeman mr favor aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye ms p barcelona hi and that motion carries and the second one is a number of resignations of classified employees eight to be exact again on one reading so i move the approval this
