much there we go dear Lakewood City Schools administration Board of Education colleagues and the entire Lakewood city schools Community what a year 2020 turned out to be so much more challenging confusing and troubling than we could have imagined when the year began and yet with that worry we kept working together listening learning refocusing and in the best possible ways looking out for the students and employees of the Lakewood city schools back in March we thought we might have a few weeks of disruption but that we would get back to some normaly maybe even before the end of the last school year not only did that not come to pass but our kids have not been in school and we have not been together since then that said what we've accomplished since March is nothing short
of amazing the Lakewood city schools are investing and hiring more teachers and having additional staff available for our students and families this has allowed Lakewood city schools to offer three different age appropriate models for education for our children and families this year while one model will not be starting until this week being able to offer choices to our families during this most challenging time in order for everyone to determine what is best for them and their individual needs and situations has been a goal since this pandemic became our new way of life these models have all all have children as the focus while working working with our incredible teachers in new different and safe ways our Educators have worked tirelessly to work with each of our students and provide them with the Ed Educational Foundation
they need to prepare them for the future another big shift has been in access to resources while in the remote environment technology resources have been deployed across all of the age groups and maintained by by our employees to help ensure that kids are able to connect and engage with their classes wherever they are located meals have been provided at all of our buildings to help meet meet our community's basic needs all School Employees have been hard at work supporting our kids and families and Community we were able to do this in part due to the support from the community in passing the levy and bond issue back in the spring after a changed election date do you remember that when the election changed right before it happened lakew with support of its Schools Employees and
Facilities allowed the district to avoid negative change being experienced in other districts offer many choices and support our employees through investments in technology safety and continuing education as a member of the Board of Education I have kept my focus on how we can and should continue to provide public education for all of our students supporting what is working and evaluating how things can be modified for improvement this is thought this is thoughtful paced work sometimes moving slower than some would like and likewise moving faster than others would like navigating the unique experiences of our entire School Community our students employees and families has been near impossible as the differing needs and goals were in Conflict more this year than ever and yet we all kept working together and toward the future as a parent it
is hard not to think about what has been lost as our country has failed to keep education and our children as a priority during this pandemic the lack of a federal response and limited support from the state of Ohio namely in testing capacity and now with the vaccine now with Deb vaccine deployment will result in our navigating this new normal for some time to come I am definitely sad for the experiences that our children have missed out on and yet know that they are learning some major life lessons in navigating pandemic life which will help them throughout their lives among the disappointments I will carry include the fact that because this pandemic has not resulted in shared challenges and experiences it resulted in our Collective inability to understand each other and each other's unique needs
there is so much complexity of Life experienced by each household and some of the needs that resulted during the pandemic challenges are typically not due to the lack of will or support of families and caregivers who have worked so hard during this time but rather the realities of the lack of support for families and workers in federal and state policy especially for children with special or profound needs and it's something I think we'll need to Grapple with for some time to come our Collective ability to empathize with others has been strained during this time as we lost experence experiences to commune with each other and yet we keep working together and for the future this disperate impact is even more nuanced when we layer on the need to reconcile the realities of systemic racism and
experiences for communities of color we in the Lakewood city schools recognize the challenges and will seek to continue to work for equality 2020 reminded all of us that we still have work a lot of work to do but here we are now in 2021 we will need to say goodbye to our beloved superintendent Dr Barnes and welcome a new leader to Lakewood Dr Barnes has been wonderful to work with even during this horrible year and his steady and thoughtful leadership is what we needed during this challenging time I was so lucky to be part of the team that hired him to come to Lakewood 3 years ago and though I wish his time with us would be longer I am so glad he was able to share his enthusiasm intelligence and focus on what is
best for children here in Lakewood we are a better district for having him with us and I'm so glad we will be able to finish this school year together I have a lot of hopes for this year I have shared before that while I have been able to work a mix of at home and in the office for the nonprofit that I work for my husband has gone to work every day since March with a few days off here and there as part of patient care teams in the ICU as a pharmacist at University Hospital I am so proud of him and all the people in our community who are on the front lines in providing health care for people in hospitals and Care Facilities as well as First Responders in the past few weeks
he has been helping to administer the vaccine to healthcare workers at the hospital the vaccine that will soon be available to Ohio to people involved in education as their part of the next phase in recognition of their priority role in our state as instrumental in shaping the lives of others I have seen how this virus has impacted people I work with and their families along with my own family directly this is why it is important that we must continue to be careful in how we interact and engage at this time and throughout the year and yet brighter days are ahead as I conclude this year I would like to thank my family for their support while I know this year has been challenging for many people for many different reasons this year was more taxing
on our family than I could have expected however even when things were at their darkest I and we the Board of Education kept working on behalf of our community not letting the fear sadness or frustration stop the work that needed to be done our Collective vision of a Lakewood graduate and the attributes and their attributes are part of our entire District and it is exciting how it is part of so much of our work all characteristics that are just as important during a pandemic as in other times we keep moving forward we will keep moving forward together and I have hope for the future thank you board members for your presence and perseverance and good luck to Mrs shaunessy in your term as president thank you Dr Barnes and Mr Zeman for your steady and
thoughtful leadership thank you School admin ad ministrators Educators teachers and employees for your skill expertise and focus on children thank you families and Caregivers for navigating these changes and supporting your students and thank you students for giving us millions of reasons to hope for the future and inspiration to be better adults thank you [Applause] Lakewood I think it's good going to be interesting that in fact we have very many common themes in our in our evaluation um I have just a few comments I would first like to begin by recognizing the great job Mrs Petri Barcelona has done over the past year she took her responsibility to assure that all voices be heard despite the limitations of meetings um that we have experienced during the time of covid and took them very seriously she has
both presented and listened to comments with compassion and with respect and has used the input of the community to inform her actions I want to thank her for her absolute commitment to our children in schools you started this our job this year above all others is to do our very best to nourish the hope hopes and possibilities of each and every child in our community we must do this with equity and understanding that each child or family may not receive exactly what they wish but providing learning choices for parents does reflect our desire to meet the widest possible range of needs this board and District administrators have heard the eloquent and passionate views of many the community and have worked to respond we have also served as advocates for those children whose families may not
have reached out but whose children's needs deserve to be considered equally as we move forward I feel it is safe to say all of our deliberations and decisions will reflect a focus on our core responsibility to put the needs of Children First our priorities for the upcoming year are many and each is important at the success of our district I see three that are critical to our moving forward and each Demands a robust approach we must first maintain our focus on High student achievement for students whether in an in-person or remote learning environment and this includes addressing the gaps in learning progress resulting from the disruptions of the past year I know there'll be a continuing effort to improve remote learning and I know that teachers and principles are looking at student grades and what
students need to avoid falling further behind our second mission is to hire a superintendent who will lead with the focus on student achievement through student centered learning who will facilitate communication and collaboration with community and staff and fulfilling the mission of the Lakewood city schools who will continue to build on initiatives designed to develop a more cohesive education Continuum and who will recognize the wonderful and unique community in which we live because it really is the third item that I I think is a priority for us is to continue to identify and address Equity gaps and omissions and both course offerings and student support needs around diversity and inclusion we need to be vigilant in this effort we may certainly encounter obstacles in the coming year however I am certain that this board Dr Barnes
Mr Zeman are principal teachers and invaluable support staff will devote themselves to our mission I have also seen many reasons to be hopeful many of them already outlined by Mrs Petri Barcelona teachers have acquired the technical skills required for remote teaching and learning and have met the challenge with creativity and Ingenuity tens of thousands of meals have been provided to our children by our nutrition services staff who come to work every day to provide what so many of our children need the diversity equity and inclusion task force has contined to meet to keep these important issues at the Forefront this is a group of 30 to 35 employes who have come together to address important issues and it's certainly not because they didn't have something else to do access points have been established in schools
to provide support for remote Lear Learners who may be struggling done a lot it will certainly be my privilege to serve as board president in the coming year and to serve with my fellow board members Mr favor Mrs BBE Mr Callahan Mrs Petri Barcelona are all devoted to the Lakewood Community to public education and to our children I know we can meet the diverse needs of our students and our community by exhibiting the very same qualities of resilience and perseverance that we work to see in our children we can create the environment which allows our students to develop these characteristics characteristics of a lakid graduate that were identified through a CommunityWide process and discussion no matter the setting in which the learning is taking place I know know that we will be much more successful
if we approach each other with empathy address our challenges through honest communication and creative thinking and accept that we will have to approach approach issues with the growth mindset and be prepared to be adaptable to rework to refine and even reject plans in order to be successfully moving toward our goals again thank you for this opportunity to to serve the community I Cher thank you thank [Applause] you and with that I believe it is time to adjourn this organizational meeting and do we require a motion for that okay then this meeting is a jerk oh change seats e e e call this meeting to order please uh our first item is the Pledge of [Music] Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it
stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you very much Mr Zan do you need to call the role for this meeting as well presid Mr favor here Mr caran here m b Miss pety Barcelona here thank you very much um we do need an addition to the agenda Mr favor would you make that motion uh I would move that we adopt the agenda with the addition that there will be an executive session following the public session and that will be for the purpose of a Public Employee thank you very much so adoption of the agenda has been moved is there a second second thank you and this requires a roll call vote Mr Zan Mr hesy I Mr fav hi Mr Callahan hi Miss BB miss pet barcelon hi
thank you um next item is the approval of men for four meetings one held December 5th one December 7th one December 12th and one December 17th um is there a motion to approve move adoption of the uh minutes of the respective meetings thank you it's been moved and seconded that we approved the minutes of these four meetings all in favor signified by saying I I opposed and the meeting minutes are approved Dr barns thank you Madam president uh before we move into the uh superintendent report I would like to take this opportunity to uh mention that the month of January is board appreciation month and um you know with all great organizations there's a common characteristic that they all have and that's consistent sustained and committed leadership at the top and so on behalf of
myself uh treasur Zan the administration um the faculty and the staff are we really uh with deep appreciation would like to demonstrate um in word how much we really appreciate this board of education and all that you do for his children as a token of our appreciation there is a certificate sitting in front of you and for those in attendance please join me in a round of applause for our wonderful Board of Education please thank you Dr bares absolutely um so uh for tonight's presentation we have some friends with us um we um wanted to start uh 2021 um with a recommitment to a focus a focus that has been a part of a journey um that uh started 3 years ago um you know 2020 is gone uh but our commitment to children and
our vision is not and we wanted to share with the board um some fantastic work that is ongoing uh as it relates to the vision of a lakid graduate and we have um some friends here um just going to help us and I'm going to ask uh Dr pumo to the podium and she'll get us started and then uh our other friends will join us thank you Dr Barnes so tonight um as we share our presentation with you we we'll kind of do a little bit of a full circle um I will start us off I will um introduce some addition presenters that are here with me from our district leadership team and our district leadership steering committee um and that is uh Mr Joanie mansf who is our principal at Harding I will turn
it over to him um he will then turn it over to Brian Beerman who is a teacher at Garfield um Brian will turn it over to Alice hubard who is a teacher at lakwood high school Alice will turn it back over to me and then I'll turn it back over to Dr bar so we'll we'll come in a first full circle um but I want to share with you a little bit about the work that has been going on um around our vision of a Lakewood graduate and as we start talking about that just to Circle back and and take us a little bit back to the beginning and really what we were working to achieve was a plan um that would be anchored in um what what our community most values and and finds
to be most important for our students and in developing this Vision um Dr Barnes had the opportunity to engage hundreds of stakeholders he worked with our Chamber of Commerce our faith-based community listen and learn sessions in the community our PTA Council obviously our Board of Education our administrative team and our certified and classified staff we brought all of um these individuals together to um begin to get feedback from them on what things were important what were the skills abilities and habits of mind that we wanted to see in our students as they graduated um the district was also able to engage in a telephone survey of um 400 residents and then an online survey that involved parent parents teachers an additional staff and there there were um 902 individuals that were involved in that and
in gathering all that information what resulted was our vision of a Lakewood graduate including the six core competencies that um Mr Beerman and Miss Mrs hubard will describe a little in a little bit further detail um but before they do that I'm I'm going to turn it over to Mr NE Manford from Harding and he is really going to highlight for you how in the midst of a pandemic we have continued to focus on operationalizing our vision through the work of our district leadership District leadership team and the steering committee that spent a great deal of time defining these competencies and then identifying what we're calling look fors um and these are the things that we strive to to embed in our adult to adult interactions and then our adult to student interactions so without
further Ado I'm going to turn it over to Mr n manfre he'll come up and share a little bit with you about those competencies and how we've continued to focus forward throughout uh the the time of the pandemic rather than trying to just focus on the moment which we've had to do plenty of the don't get me wrong we've continued to look to the Future and one of the things that came out of that was this concept of focus forward Lakewood Focus forward Lakewood is one of the things that as a a District Administrative team we are looking for the future and what can our district be continuing to move the strong District we have forward at the building level it's what can we do to help move our individual buildings forward our teachers we
ask them to consider how can they continue to move their individual students and classrooms forward and the the overarching goal is to help our students develop the skills to look for their own future and how can they move their own future forward we do it by modeling by doing exactly what I just described at the administrative principal and teacher level but also by helping them to develop a core group of six competencies and that those core group of six competencies that the the district leadership team the district leadership steering committee as well as the District administration have been working on are the growth mindset empathy critical and creative thinking Global awareness and citizenship communication and collaboration when you look at those six concepts are major themes they AR don't stand alone as one individual thing
you'll notice that they're connected with lines okay in reality it's a full circle okay because all of these competencies come together at different times within a classroom you may see some collaboration happening well if you're going to collaborate on a project that means you're communicating you're developing your communication skills as well depending upon what the topic is for example in e8th grade language arts at the middle school level one of our entire units really focuses on this concept of empathy when we start talking about diversity and inequity from the standpoint of the Holocaust or other travesties in history so we actually embed these these core competencies Within our school within our curriculum and within our other activities that we put into the school day for example during remote learning continuing to look forward rather than
backwards at the middle school level we've embedded seal social emotional learning lessons every Friday and that helps us to hit in on some empathy and some Global awareness as well as challenging our students to think critically about what we do at this time I'm going to turn it over to Mr Beerman and Miss hubard where they're going to elaborate more on each of these six and what we're going to look for in the classroom to see that our students are developing these skills thank you good evening thanks for having us uh I'm also super excited to have kids on Thursday so thank you for that also all right I'm going to talk about growth mindset first growth mindset is the belief that skills and intelligence are grown and developed through dedication and hard work the
evidence of a growth mindset like if you uh see it in in kids you walk in a classroom you might see things like accountability uh perseverance in the face of obstacles uh seeing failure as an opportunity for learning as opposed to an end uh the power of yet is the willingness to try something something new something hard uh reflection goal setting in life and work belief in selfimprovement inspired by the success of others focusing on the process rather than the outcome it's all a means to an end uh gives receives and incorporates constructive feedback and seeks help when necessary the next uh competency here is critical and creative thinking critical and creative thinking involves students thinking broadly and deeply using skills behaviors and what is that word dispositions okay it's kind of far away from
here I'm testing my my bra brand new glasses uh such such as a reason and logic resourcefulness uh imagination and innovation in all learning areas at school and in their lives beyond school to solve problems the evidence you would see uh of a of a critical and creative thinker uh they generate ideas and Poss possibilities and actions they're able to provide evidence of their thinking uh they anticipate possible outcomes they analyze synthesize and evaluate reasoning and procedures uh they vet sources very important in this day and age vet sources utilize multiple resources uh reflect on thinking processes and outcomes make connections across content areas uh willing and able to consider uh diverse points of view all of these are connected and then the next competency here is communication communication evolves involves a two-way process of
conveying information ideas and feelings or opinions either verbally and non-verbally uh evidence of an effective Communicator uh they're going to be organized and prepared Express thoughts in written and oral format exhibits active listening awareness and sensitivity to the audience Advocates to self and others recognizes uh nonverbal body language and responds appropriately gives and receives constructive feedback presents presents thoughts logically clearly and concisely willing and able to consider diverse points of view and finally asks questions to deepen understanding that's my period of talking hi I'm Alice hubard I'm a science teacher at the high school and when we were at District leadership team it was the spring two years ago and Dr Barnes presented these to us and it seemed really exciting to me and it made me think of the book how children succeed by
Paul tough that was written I don't know maybe a decade ago and he that Mr Mr tough Dr tough went in that book and said that a better predictor of Life outcomes is not how well the students Master the content but how well they show certain traits and skills and mindsets and they mirrored these six fairly well he talked about things like social intelligence grit empathy things like that and I thought that that makes so much sense because as an educator we're trying to not just teach kids content but also help them to have better life outcomes so this isn't just good for the community but it's good for the individual students now as a science teacher I'm very tied to content and so how do we you know disengage from that and I think
um Dr Barnes said it well when he said we're not disengaging from content but we're using the content as a vehicle for these six competencies and I thought that was really powerful so empathy was one that we defined is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing or to place oneself in another another's position position and so what does that look like in the classroom someone that encourages others someone that considers others perspectives demonstrates kindness acceptance listens actively to others shows appreciation of differences in one another exhibits awareness of others challenges develops authentic relationships understands the emotions of others shows awareness of how our actions affect others and I think that our district already is far along the way with these I look at my younger brother has Down syndrome and it
was really difficult for him you know going to school he went to Strongville schools and it was the time you know it was a while ago he's 35 but I look at someone that has Down syndrome at Lakewood High School who is completely involved and accepted by the community and I think that's showing that that empathy is already being exhibited in liquid City Schools so the next one is global awareness and citizenship and this means to be aware of and understand the wider world and one's ability to impact it a global citizen takes an active role in their community and works with others to make our planet more Equitable fair and sustainable and this is difficult for high school and well for me high school but also students because at that point in your life
you're very self-centered that's just part of development so this is a really strong one to try to develop in our kids and if we're successful we will see students that collaborate with others in solving real Community problems seek to understand diverse perspectives celebrate and appreciate differences gives back to the community Through service seeks reliable information about current events and issues feels empowered to make a difference engages in opportunities to promote equity and fairness engages in activities that promote sustainability and a more promising future and so I think these are really great uh goals for us to have for our students and the final one is collaboration and by collaboration we mean that it enable aables people to work together to achieve a common purpose it is a process by which ideas are constructively explored in
order to achieve stronger Solutions and the evidence engages in opportunities to work with others develops rapport with others in the working group and of course that goes back to empathy and some of the other ones we already talked about engages in team problem solving uses clear and thoughtful communication skills seeks input and is open to new ideas is an active participant in the collaborative process is accountable to the team flexibility in compromises in order to reach consensus and staying engaged in enduring discomfort during corageous conversations and so again we can see how those really you have to have this piece of it to fit in with all the other ones so in tying these to my experience with the pandemic of course I had to develop like everybody else a totally different way of teaching
and it did give me the first step in pulling away from being so tied to curriculum in that my students have always taken closed note assessments that are traditional and given by the state of Ohio and everyone else and that's not realistic when students are all at home and so I could either try to limit how much access they have to information to see what they can do or I can make it real world and give them access to all the information to try to solve problems so I feel like that was my first step to trying to move to some of these skills and I'm certainly not there yet but I feel like the next step of this process is to figure out now that we know what we want our students to achieve
what can teachers do to try to embed this into their work so with that I'll pass it back to Dr Palumbo so before I Advance the slide and share just a few more slides with you I I did want to just share how much we um uh Maggie nids Wiki our assistant superintendent and myself appreciate the work of our DT steering committee um so members right behind me um and of our district leadership team when you think of those six competencies um and arriving at a a shared definition for all of those and then arriving at shared descriptors or look fors or attributes um it it was really a an exercise in a collaborative process and then um having to move that work over zoom and um collaborate electronically so I I just wanted to
highlight that the definitions that you see and the the look fors or the evidence is not something that Dr Barnes wrote up in his office but it's something that a team that represented administrators and teachers from all of our buildings um collectively work together to arrive at those definitions and those um uh look fors as I like to call them there there's one additional thing that Dr Barnes had asked me to talk about and um Mrs shaunessy referenced it in her um remarks in the organizational meeting um amid the the pandemic and amid our work on our vision we as a district um saw the need to to elevate our focus on diversity equity and inclusion and um that work kind of a um began in the summertime with some some students gathering at Lakewood
Park to express um some some concerns that that they felt about our community in general and as a school district we use that as a springboard to develop a A diversity equity and inclusion task force or a Dei task force and as Mrs shaunessy mentioned we have over 30 um certified and classified staff members it includes representatives from our Recreation Department our data Department um all the way you know we have a a preschool teacher all the way to to high school age um to to staff that work with high school age students on this committee uh the committee meets monthly we have multiple subgroups that are looking at you know a whole host of different things including professional learning including our discipline practices including our hiring practices um and how do we engage students
as well in this work and we are kind of taking the lead in many ways from our Lakewood High School um Dei diversity Equity inclusion group that recently received an honor and I'm I'm going to mention it Mark um they have been invited to participate in a state level advisory committee um by the state superintendent and this will focus on how the Ohio Department of Education can learn from and identif identify ways to support local um schools and districts in their Equity efforts so you know certainly hats off to our team at Lakewood High School the work that they've been doing here at the high school has really helped us to model the work that we're doing um at the district level and um such an honor for them to be invited to participate on
this state level Advisory Group um and and one of the the other things that Dr Barnes and I often talk about is we we can't continue to give people people one more thing because it becomes a plate that is overloaded um and there's just too too many things or or too many plates spinning and when we began to talk about the Dei work and how does this link to our vision of a Lakewood graduate I heard Mr Nemo make some references to it um Brenda buzzer who's one of our coordinators for teaching and learning LED our district leadership team and an activity that talked about how does the work of our Dei task force diversity equity and inclusion how does that align to our vision of a Lakewood graduate and I have a slide it
might be a little bit difficult to see but what you can see is the work of our district leadership team and um everyone was able to add a virtual sticky note and indicate how they felt that the Dei work aligned with our vision of wood graduate and while I know you can't see those sticky notes um in communication there's a note that says um the words that we use matter so how we communicate to others and about others um matters there there were as you can see so many linkages that we could barely capture them all on the same slide and um I I think the the importance of honing in on that for staff is this isn't one more plate that is spinning this isn't one more thing that we have to do but
this is very integral to the work of our vision of a Lakewood graduate in terms of becoming a global citizen in terms of how we communicate how we collaborate um in terms of um continuing to develop that growth mindset and engage in really critical challenging conversations critical conversations and developing empathy um and demonstrating that empathy so I'm going to turn it back over to Dr Barnes and then um see if there's questions so A wise man once thank you very much um Brian Alis Christie and Joel Li uh person once said when you have talented people around you get out of their way and as you can see over here it's a representation of the immense talent that is here in this District uh this Vision that is a part of a community effort um
has become deeply rooted and the work that we do here it's a part of the fabric it's become a part of the culture of how we work in fact uh Jeff schlade and HR department has been uh uh uh evaluating how they can uh expand the vision of a Lakewood graduate to the vision of a Lakewood employee and because we want to be aligned systemwide all the way from the bottom all the way to the top and across um so that we can be complete in this work this work uh represents the hope dreams and aspirations that this community not anyone individual that this community has determined uh that is important for every Lakewood graduate and speaking of the Lakewood graduates as we we um prepare uh for the last semester of the class of
0532021 we have to remain laser focused and make sure that all of our suits in the class of 2021 particularly is College and Career ready these skills abilities and habits of mind that they will leave lakwood high school with will last a lifetime and it will prepare them uh completely uh for the work ahead I like to uh uh take the vo's attention to the above you know um one of the things um that that star represents is it represents the vision as our North Star and we are linked by a shared Vision that has been that has been um determined right here in our school community and what we want to make sure that we we we don't lose sight of and that we focus on in the second semester 2021 is that irregardless
of the learning um opportunity or the learning modality that a family has chosen that we remind ourselves that we are linked whether you're remote in person or e-learning we are linked by a common Vision that has been born right here and so we want to celebrate that and we don't want any kid or any family to feel on the outside or dis franchise we're linked by a common vision and that visual is intended to represent that whether you're remote on the top left in person on the top right or e-learning at the bottom what what excuse me what's shared in the middle is our common vision and when we realize that for every student um our students will be much uh much I should say prepared for the future so I thank you for your
attention and then if there's any questions please our esteemed presenters over there can do their best to uh to answer any questions thank you [Music] so thank it was it was very nice to hear you know we've for these last few months we've been torn and actually seemingly distracted from basic core stuff like this so this is it was really refreshing for me to hear it was with everything else that's been going on it was really down to really what we're here for so thank you very much yeah I I guess if I could just add to one thing that I particularly appreciate is the um along with the intentionality of what's Happening how to help ensure that um I think Dr plumo you said it just sort of we don't want to make things
one additional thing to add stress and strain but but the fact that this is intentionally part of what we're doing and I think that I mean all of us likely know that many of these um elements and traits or characteristics have been part of the Lakewood city schools forever but when we add it intentionally and just sort of bring it to the surface how um I appreciate certainly from from those who are are in the classroom that this doesn't have to be one extra thing that's going to you know um set them over the top but it's really more it's already been part of it and it's now just drawing it out and makes it so much more um I guess not necessarily simple because this isn't simple work but it just it's much more
flexible with regard to how it can be implemented so I appreciate that because I think certainly the stress and strain of everything we want if we want this to be real living and longterm it needs to be as simple as possible and that's what you all have done and I appreciate that if if I could um thank you for the for the presentation um Dr pumbo I think you said the the anchor is that um this is the the community's vision and with everyone having had the ability to contribute um as a parent I I came to one of Dr Barn's sessions um you know with with that comes Buy in this Collective buyin um and it only naturally then becomes a unifying force and I think we're seeing that that happen and to keep
the entire District um and and Community aligned and while Dr Barnes was instrumental in the process um the fact that it's the communities that it's this Collective work and not any one persons means that you know not only can It remain with us but but it can um just continue to to guide us you know for for for some time to come and as people make choices on on where to live and on where to to uh educate their children I can only um uh think that that that this makes our community and our district you know more attractive so thank you can I just ask are students starting to think of themselves as a collaborative person or a I mean to to feel that a good communicator are is the language becoming familiar enough
to students so they understand that they're competent in something so I would certainly invite the the teachers if they wanted to add anything or or Mr new man frre as well um you know I I do think as is age appropriate we are beginning to introduce the concepts to students um I believe it is Horus man that is um has has done quite a bit of work around growth mindset so different buildings are kind of attacking um I don't know if attacking is the right word but but sort of getting after to use Dr Barnes terms getting after um different competencies in different ways but absolutely that that students are engaging in discussions about um you know what does growth mindset mean uh what does it mean to show empathy to others um and certainly
um Mr Nemo mentioned our um social emotional skills lessons that that absolutely focus on how we communicate with others how we collaborate with others and how we demonstrate that empathy and and become globally aware and become a global citizen because in kindergarten becoming a global citizen starts with becoming a kindergarten citizen in your kindergarten classroom so I guess all I would add is that I think that we did start but I think that it did kind of get put on hold through the pandemic and so and maybe it didn't at all schools I just feel from my personal experience that it wasn't Forefront it couldn't have been Forefront um although in hindsight maybe those six skills and competencies would have gotten us farther along than we are who knows but I think that seeing a
little bit of a reminder for staff and also by now that this work is done figuring out how we will embed it better into our curriculum and like you said Miss barcela how to pull out what is already there I think that will be a good next step and I'm curious to see where that will go does this make you more aware of in your interaction with students and and modeling in a way but how does it how does it affect your role as a teacher in the classroom you know I think that sometimes it when I'm thinking about my curriculum then I can kind of start to think about how I'm bringing the in and it doesn't happen every day and I'd like to be more but for example when I was teaching about
um the cell cycle and we talked about how cancer works and so I invited the students to talk about do they know someone that has been affected by cancer and that's an example of how I can not by telling them this is empathy but by demonstrating what empathy can look like for one another and so I think it'll take time to really have these six embedded in my own personal instruction but I think every time we talk about it you think oh yeah there's an opportunity where I could tie in global awareness or make them better communicators so I think it's still a working process at least from my perspective thank you also to Echo what Alice said um we had just really gotten into we got about halfway through the competencies and fleshing things
out but we like um so we hadn't really even started talking about things and the thing that I noticed in the beginning and I I'll I'll admit to when it first got dumped in front of us being a little bit skeptical um being a veteran of many buzzword campaigns over my career um I was like this is kind of looks like another buzzword campaign but like where do it come from but as we as we flesh things out you know because I was looking at it and I said we all do all of these things how are we going to assess for this how is this how is that um but as we fleshed it out the more I realized that okay this is like we're being we're being focused on it and I as
my grandfather told me in not exactly the same words but similar where you point your your bow your Stern will follow so if we're focused on these things and we use the verbiage and we talk about that and we notice it we point it out then then then it makes connections to them and they realize that they've got these skills also that they've got these competencies already even though that's already there but now we're naming them if that makes sense I think you've all displayed resilience so Jeff that one up thank you thank you thank everyone that concludes the superintendent report thank you that really was very pleasant to be talking about something substantive and purposeful well it's 2020 and it's uh we have to continue to focus forward and find our Center once again
and um again thanks sir presenters for being here tonight and sharing with the board I mean they're continuing the work um so thanks again thank you okay we move on to discussion of agenda items um to be voted on at our next meeting and the first items are Finance Mr Callahan thank you president shy we have uh four items on the finance report um the first is Investments purchased and matured in October 2020 their tables included uh in materials they identify Investments That Ed during that month as well as outstanding Investments as of October 2020 investment earnings for regular board funds for the month of October total $2,296 bringing fiscal year-to-date earnings to 96,000 uh $667 uh then we have uh Investments purchase matured November 2020 again tables included in the materials um investment earnings
for regular board funds for the month of November told toed um just over $5500 bringing the fiscal year-to-date earnings to $12,238 um third financial information uh for October uh 2020 um for the month general fund receipts totaled $ 4,433 n43 general fund expenditures 7,934 34263 uh fiscal year 2021 one state funding level will remain at the reduced uh fiscal year 2020 amount the district State Foundation uh was reduced by $1.1 million in May 2020 from uh 17.4 million basically down to 16.3 for the 1920 school year so for fiscal year 2021 the state foundation will remain at the reduced amount that's 16, 373,000 which is again 1.1 million less than forecasted in May 2020 cash balance reserves are sufficient through fiscal year 2022 and then F the fourth item is uh financial information November um
0672020 for the month of October general fund sorry that should be I believe the month of November general fund receipts uh totaled uh 2.5 million and general fund expenditures totaled uh 5,43 $ 3,992 um a financial summary reports provided of course to show monthly and fiscal year-to-date cash position for the non-general funds maintained by the district appropriation uh modifications will ensure we are in compliance with the state auditor's office and the County Fiscal office um all accounts have sufficient funds available to cover the increase in Appropriations the amendment increases allow the district to legally encumber and pay funds up to the amounts appropriated Mr demon anything to add um sure just two quick things one is my apologies on that second uh um squib there regarding should have said November so that was my mistake
um the reason there's two months worth though on this agenda is in in July you remember we had a retirement and so therefore we did not have the board approve an August financial statement way back then and this now gets us caught up to speed now that we have uh Miss weisbart as the assistant treasur for the district so going forward there will just be one month we'll be back on the normal schedule thank you any questions for Mr Callahan okay thank you very much uh next item is building sites and major purchases report Mrs Petri Barcelona no report this month thank you oh it's your lucky night yes um next uh report is the education report Miss BB right a number of items for Education tonight um number of one's a routine item a
parent of a Lakewood High School student senior has requested that his son be allowed to complete his year at Lakewood High School in a non-tuition basis uh state law provides for this and it seems only fair to children to allow them to finish out in the school where they uh have been for most of their career uh second item is the calendar for the school year 2021 22 I can't believe it um it school starts uh in August on August 19th and ends on June 2nd uh 2022 uh Christmas break begins on December 20th um the calendar will be on the school website shortly after our approval on the 18th of January so if people are concerned about maybe we could have a vacation sometime next year this could give you a guide the next
item is a resolution to designate the month of February 2021 as national team Dating Violence awareness and prevention month this is something that we've been uh acknowledging and and focusing on for a number of years here uh will join the Ohio office of Criminal Justice Services and other local and National agencies in activities around the uh National teen Dating Violence Awareness Month the next item is the approval of lwood high schools 2021 22 course guide this is still every year I'm just so impressed with what a magnificent document this is it provides the rules that the students need to to live on obviously but it's mostly 25 or 30 pages of classes cour coures that Lakewood High School students can take and all the courses that you had when you were in high school and
then a myriad of absolutely fascinating things that always makes me think I want to go back to high school Mr waler you and I have to have a talk um the other thing is the two pages two full Pages small type at the end of extracurricular activities that students can engage in and the wide variety of of things I don't think any with high school student should ever be able to use the words I'm bored uh and then I should also point out that we have two new courses this year one Native American history and the other black American history and in both instances um they were at the uh uh suggestion or initiated by Lakewood High School teachers themselves and I think it's uh a wonderful addition to the I wish them well the
next item is a resolution to approve Navan software at Lakewood High School uh scheduling at Lakewood High School has always been a a a trial and and a and a time of great stress so I'm assuming anyway that navian is going to make scheduling somewhat easier and then connect up with college application and making sure we have enough credits okay then the next item is an application to approve to more Lakewood High School clubs the first one a sports and exercise science club all students ex uh enrolled in the student and sports and exercise science programs are members of the club and this is to support student participation in this Career Tech student organization competitive event at the state local and National level and there will be fundraising for project supplies recognition gifts apparel Etc
the next Club is the Theater Arts Club and students in the CTE theater arts program uh will engage in skills USA to gain a greater understanding of Workforce and opportunities available to them this is another Career Tech program uh another one of the opportunities that like good high school students have and includes fundraisers meetings and performances I just think it's wonderful we have a student arts program and then finally gifts to Lakewood schools Char Robertson donated supplies and art books for the students at the art department at the high school Valerie Hills donated various materials for use by H2O and the art classes at Lakewood High School and that concludes my report thank thank you very much any questions for Mrs B okay hearing none we will move on to policy and I do not
believe we have any uh think any policy changes to consider um so we move to human resources and Community Services report Mr favor please thanks Mr Shany I think uh board members will not that the numbers here are not the usual large numbers that we have in one of these reports but it's the same general category ories we have eight actions in certified uh 10 actions in classified uh these include leaves of absences appointments and special compensations and so forth and then we have four actions uh as far as athletic coaches advisors and so forth and then two actions for community recreation and education and that concludes the report thank you very much we now move on to the communic ation portion of our meeting um first I would ask has Mr Zan or M
Dr barns have either of you anything to share board members if if I could this very briefly I just wanted to note um Miss BB in your report you reminded me that um in our house um our our kids will be returning to school they're purple so they'll be going to school on Friday and I have enjoyed so much the high school classes I've been able to listen in on for the past semester um when my daughter happens to be near me when she's taking classes and I'm just continually impressed with our our Educators and just the experience that they've had um working remotely and so I am going to miss that I'm going to miss uh APUSH in particular um and a few other classes but uh it's just been nice in the background
but I guess that is all to say that I do I I appreciate the effort going into remote I have every confidence that our students who uh K to 5 as well as our middle school and high schoolers that will be remaining remote um will will still be part of classes will still be actively engaged and will be part of something very special and uh indeed I'm just looking forward to having uh students and teachers and everybody back in our buildings uh later this week thank you anything else to share okay we did receive some Communications um following Mrs Petri Barcelona's lead I will go through these and um try to summarize them slightly but let people know that we are reading these um the first is from Angela Jagger 2043 Arthur Avenue um who
is writing that she wishes that we would um stay out of school stay remote for a longer period of time um and mentioning the Koga County Board of Health um as well as the governor's um discussion and just talking about how her um family has been impacted by this terrible plague um the next is from Jim Harmon 14720 Armen Avenue um he is also um requesting that we' be better Serv to be going back on January 11th and um talking about the uh maybe having a longer buffer uh after the break to ensure student and staff safety um we received a um communication from an stall haer 1081 Forest Cliff Drive um who is commenting just on the how exhausting this is um and that I I'm my sense of it is is that she
does not want to go back um have her kids go back to school um next uh communication is from Valerie molinsky 1480 clearance Avenue who would like to um see a summary of our the building protocols and how our uh buildings are um safe for for going back to school she's a healthy building professional and has just wanted us to enumerate the updates or changes made to our buildings um and inperson protocols that will ensure a safe in-person environment I don't know if they're on the our website um and um people are always free to ask you know a specific question if they need to um the next comment is from Marcus whiteitem 1363 West Lake Avenue um feeling that it is um not a good thing to return to the buildings in 3 days
talks about the infection rates and uh the rate um the incidents for 44107 zip code and comments on the fact that the vaccine you know is going to be available and hopefully that will um enable us to get back eventually in school um the next comment Chris Nagel and Shannon cardelina 1544 Parkwood Road um again commenting on um the desire to stay out for longer period of time and the county the Koka County Board of Health um extension to the 15th as well as the 44107 zip code um incidents um and the last is Donna Parks 205 y and. um asking why we are going back so fast and that concludes uh the messages that we received and we certainly pay attention to them and um are trying uh to explain the logic and just
reminding that there is a choice um for families any other Communications come to mind yes you know in in two of the emails that you read Mrs sha see there was the reference to the numbers in the Lakewood zip code and I don't know if the other board member this only came to my attention just today but the Ohio Department of Education now has a covid-19 dashboard that I'm told they update every day like at 2:00 now I haven't really surfed this that much but at at a quick glance in there uh because I heard the comments about the numbers and at a quick glance um the numbers for Lakewood places it towards the top of the ZIP code however if you go with the percentages uh we drop way down uh we we're like
at 5.8 uh other districts in West Shore I believe all of the other districts in the West Shore with us are just a bump higher than that within a percent but higher so our percentage is within range uh our numbers are higher but obviously we're a city of 50,000 as opposed to West L's a city of 32,000 so uh there sort of a balancing act here with the numbers but uh the what I say what's nice about it is rather than having to wait a week or two weeks I mean there is more immediate feedback on the numbers so that if we were seeing something going very far either way we'd be able to see it sooner than than later and then uh another thing that came to my attention today and this this to
me is is kind of alarming is is and it was a a report out of Ohio State University and it has to do with their athletes and uh this is something for Mr walers that to keep in mind as we're making sure that we're following all of our guidelines and our protocols and our safety with our athletic events and that is that there was a like a 30% rate and I'm just pulling these numbers off of a quick glance but there was like a 30% rate of their athletes and they don't have the entire student population factored but of their athletes in the Ohio State athletic department that got covid there was like a 30% rate of permanent heart or breathing damage that would obviously will create lifelong insurance issues and medical issues and so
on and so forth uh I don't know how uh uh easy they are with some of their requirements uh and I know those of us that been watching sports and so forth we've seen plenty of college and professional teams that don't seem to be real tight on making sure that their their participants are are following things so I think it's just another reminder to us that as we as we have these events going on within the district that our staff and our our athletic director and our coaches and that make sure that they are really holding a tight rain on um the protections that are in places for those that are participating that's it thank you yeah it's a real sign of the times when the Browns finally win and the first thing out of
people spouses put a mask on um okay we move on to Other Board business and I believe Mr favor there's one item we do we have a uh request and this is a request for one reading and that is that we have two resignations for classified and since that's a resignation we're being able to handle that this evening on one reading uh that would be a roll call vote and I would move first of all though I would move adoption of the resolution second it's been moved and seconded um any discussion hearing none Mr Zan Mr sha I Mr fav I Mr Kahan I miss BB hi Miss P Barcelona I thank you motion passes uh that concludes our business is there any other other business for members of the board okay then we do
need um to have an executive session so we would need a motion to recess to Executive session Mrs Shany I move that we recess to Executive session for the consideration of the employment of public officials after which we would consider we would not have any further business umk you second been moved and seconded any discussion um and we will adjourn as soon as we conclude our identified business Mr Zeman would you call the role Please Mr shy I Mr Faber I Mr calan I miss pH hi miss pet Barcelona hi so thank you all very much thank you all in this room and I mean it everyone here I thank you for your efforts
