[Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so check check audio check check one [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's our way of making sure that we're online and everything so anyway good evening everybody we are assembled here for the july 20th 2020 lakewood board of education meeting the board did start an executive session which we exited out of and are now moving into regular session i guess that's what it's called um and we'll go ahead we typically start with the pledge of allegiance so let's go ahead and start with that i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you very much

for joining us for those of you here in person as well as all of you watching online either real time or almost real time or after this meeting is over uh let's see here we have before us the minutes of the regular board meeting held on july 6 2020 is there a motion to approve those minutes oh my gosh i skipped something i'm sorry pardon me so moving backwards slightly uh we do need to adopt the agenda so it's not anarchy i did mean to move to adopt oh thank you thank you mr devin phoebe okay thank you so it's been moved and seconded that we adopt the agenda mr zeman would you please call the roll miss peter barcelona aye mr shaughnessy aye mr favor aye mr callahan aye ms beebe aye thank you

phew we have an agenda so we're okay there all right next is we have the minutes uh in front of us from july 6 2020 is there a motion to approve so moved second it's been moved and seconded any discussion changes notes hearing none all those in favor of approving the minutes say aye aye thank you all right next item we have the superintendent's report dr barnes thank you madam president first up tonight we have the uh appointment or the recommendation the appointment of for the library trustee of uh miss nancy cyber ms seibert has served as a trustee in the past and is being recommended once again to serve the lakewood community i have a prepared statement that miss seibert wanted to offer the board and so i will read it on her behalf

i quote thank you for reappointing me to the lakewood public library's board of trustees i am honored to continue working with the other trustees and mr crawford to maintain the world-class services the library offers our residents especially during these trying times i will take extra time and consideration in helping the board and mr crawford make decisions concerning the safety of the staff and patrons the library's finances and the services offered always always remembering the mission is to provide information to all all the time so a statement from miss uh miss cybert and i wanted to read that on her behalf for the board of education next up i would like to invite two of our esteemed teachers lakewood high school to the podium mr labazo and dr greenoff these two gentlemen on conversations over the

summer with myself principal walter and associate principal shiftar are and have been in the workings of preparing a recommendation to me for courses added to the social studies department i thought it was befitting considering the resolution that the board is considering not tonight that our wonderful teachers have the opportunity to address the board uh at this time gentlemen thank you dr barnes i appreciate it so much that you guys are considering this resolution and challenging the state uh to implement some structural changes and i just love that we as a district always will walk the walk and um kind of take care of our own business so to speak so it's really uh inspiring to me and to dr greenoff and to the teachers in the department that um you know we're really going to

try to make some real change we we have seen amazing work individually among teachers in my department over the years uh in this kind of work you know cultural inclusive inclusivity and and uh looking at structural racism um but you know as hard as as we work on that it's just the me the needle doesn't really move far enough or fast enough without making bigger changes so you know and we know this because we we we are hearing this from the students themselves and from parents you know the students spoke in june very eloquently had a um a demonstration at lakewood park and they made it very clear what they want and and they've been you know they've been asking for those things over the last few years and uh dr grindoff will speak more

to that and to parents secondly i kind of just alluded to this but we um you know teachers have made a really good faith effort in u.s history world history and the electives we teach to to make sure students kind of see history through these multiple lenses and understand contributions of americans of all races and cultures and um it's just you know as hard as we work it without the curricular changes because we're so limited by testing and time and the the state standards and our own standards um it's difficult and so you know adding courses like the ones that dr barnes just mentioned and uh you know changing our curriculum requiring more uh from our students for graduation for from social studies would really liberate the teachers free the teachers up to um to

do that to teach through those different lenses and it just ties right into the district vision of a lakewood graduate teaching empathy teaching critical thinking teaching global you know citizenship and awareness are they can't be done without being able to teach through these multiple lenses okay so as we said yes we are you know um it's so easy to watch individual teachers do good things and when we want victories we get so excited about that um but it's so good to know that we're willing to celebrate those individual you know that individual work but also really try to make the bigger changes so that's you know as a department we're going to be recommending uh you know some big changes uh as far as graduation requirement and and uh what we expect students to take

before they graduate so i'll let chuck uh speak a little on this as well uh thanks joe and it's uh it's really great to see everybody dr barnes thanks so much for the invitation joe touched on most of the points but i thought you might want to hear from you know i have letters from many parents but i thought this one sort of summarized what a lot of them said and it's from sarah winters who has several children in the school district and she wrote one of the reasons we chose to buy a house and raise our kids in lakewood is the commitment to diversity inclusion many of us are acutely aware of how narrow our own education has been and crave a more inclusive experience for our children my husband and i uh passionately

believe that real substance sustainable change starts with education okay we cannot begin to fully comprehend the dynamics of culture society and economics natural resource management et cetera without understanding how we got here and so that that to reinforce some of what uh mr labazo said within the confines of our curriculum as it exists right now it simply is not possible to do justice to black history and native american history and studies i happen to be working on the native american uh history proposal and we really do want that extra half credit in order to to fully render these histories when i teach about native american history it is always sort of in response to what europeans are doing and relocating etc trying to do justice to their history in and of itself pre-contact history etc

is very very difficult what i end up doing is picking out a couple of examples maybe the lakota maybe the pequot and sort of telling students well this this is representative of the larger picture but that really isn't enough that but that's all we really can do so as much as we would like to beef up our classes that exist and i think our teachers do are are pretty uh do a very good job of rendering these histories it really makes a much stronger statement and it's a better curriculum if you take these these those two groups specifically have a unique history in our country uh and i really think that the times the the decolonization and the black lives matter movement everything sort of demands our students are craving more knowledge about where this

comes from they they they know about these elements of things but there's a much bigger picture out there so it's something that's probably long overdue but for sure i think the moment is now so thank you very good thanks um thank you would we do you want to make the motion now or did you have any any questions you'd like us let's make the motion and then answer okay okay i believe it's yours mr shaughnessy it's under motherboard business e okay thank you um this is a resolution um oh not related to the courses but related to the resolution yeah yes oh can you can you move your mic down closer to your mouth so thank you sorry i would move a passage of the resolution challenging the ohio department of education to revise current

core content standards to be culturally inclusive and i would add that included in this resolution is our own charts to ourselves to look at our own coursework our what we're teaching and tying it to becoming a more empathetic person who can actually imagine what it might have been like to be one of these you know in this these groups that we're talking about so um i would move adaption of this resolution and i second thank you moved and seconded is there any discussions or additional comments i have a question mrs bb okay have you also thought you that your department generally joe you you the two of you about reaching out to the teachers of social studies at the elementary and middle school level just to say you know here's what we're doing at the

high school there should it needs a basis it needs a foundation coming into to the work you're doing in detail that children understand that there is this history out there and that by the time they got to high school they're eager for more knowledge but they have a foundation they have a base um i'll let joe take this after but i i talked to an elementary school teacher just yesterday who is aware of what we're doing and and wants to align things more and i've sent her resources and things that we do and of course they can they'll take what we give them and make it more digestible to somebody that's in fifth grade or whatnot but yeah actually i was gonna say uh the same thing um we did just we did meet with

middle school social studies teachers uh in the february right before things kind of went sour that's you know in february because we wanted to we were really looking this year at doing more what they call articulation or whatever so really making sure we're aligning you know what we're teaching but uh i think you're so right because um the you know we we make the mistake of of of worrying about bringing up difficult topics at young ages and then we we wait too long and like dr g said there's digestible there's different ways to do it but um so we'll look more into that we just started to talk about conversations between our middle schools and our ninth and tenth grade teachers right before march um and look forward to doing a lot more of that

that's a great question it's very good awesome mrs shaughnessy i just i i think about this in terms of you know we have separate there's the separate history and i wonder if you anticipate um that before too long the history of black americans and indian americans will be part of our history not a separate category of history that you kind of learn separately because the only way you really understand it i think is if it's integrated and then it informs your own understanding of yourself and why you're where you are so just that's more philosophical question but do you anticipate that history and association an excellent question and anything that you want to follow up but the i i think i think about that a lot with when people ask ask about black history month

you know so yeah ultimately our goal would be to teach the history in a way that is that is reflective of the history um and so we often would like you would say well but in the meantime this is still needed right like in the mean you know like you said until we're at that point but with these i'm not even sure um because i think it's you know in the in the in the context of a one-year us history course you can teach you could teach multiple histories or you could teach history you know different you know different groups and how they contributed teaching the multiple lenses is hard i think we try to do it it's very hard it's very hard for a human to be able to really through one kind of

course with one thematic approach to really look at history through these different lenses we often just come back and default to looking at it through the european or white lens um so ultimately it would be great to get to that point i think we have a ways to go and i think you know those courses specific courses that really just use those lenses will do a lot for students in their you know quest for citizenship as they get older and understanding the world and how it works but yeah that's such a big it's a big part of the discussion i appreciate it any other questions or discussion hearing none all those in favor of the motion please say aye aye aye aye aye thank you very much that carries so so just the the note

there and we of course appreciate the comments from dr greenoff and uh mr labazo is that we now have a resolution that will be going to the state board of education and i mean to at least review our requests that the state standards be considered and updated to reflect our shared history but then likewise as mrs shaughnessy noted it it gives us our own to do so to speak or things to look at on how we can make sure that we aren't aren't neglecting the things that we are able to to look at and change here in lakewood so so thank you very much thank you gentlemen for taking the lead on this thank you dr burns i appreciate all the effort you've put into this and our teachers with all the other planning going

on which many people might think was enough work that you haven't tried to um avoid a commitment to getting these sorts of things attended to so i appreciate thank you folks involved at this time i would invite dr palumbo to the podium to provide an overview to the board on the reopening plan and before she gets started i just want to say that a lot of effort um has been made and continues to be um offered up to provide a a reopening plan that is both ensures the safety of our staff and students and secondly provides academic choices for our families this isn't perfect because perfect would be virus free and we would all be back in school loving kids up like we like to and helping frame up their futures but that's not our

reality and so we have to have options for families that are grounded in safety um moving forward and so that's where we're at right now we do have a lot of detail still to work out with our teachers we a lot of the stuff that we have to provide as a in terms of the detail cannot be done without sitting down with the experts or teachers and we're committed to to doing that that will take a little more time and so while we have the bones and the framework of options for the fall and the reopening of school details are still to come so i wanted to make sure that the board understood stood that and that those who are at home watching and in the audience understands that as well again details are forthcoming

but we have to take time and sit down with our staff and try to figure out some of these details and have thought partners at the table to figure it out so with that dr palumbo take it away thank you uh president petrie barcelona mrs shaughnessy vice president shaughnessy board members uh dr barnes and mr zeeman i'm so pleased that we're able to be together in person in order to talk a little bit about our lakewood city schools reopening plan and i do want to start by just sharing with you some of the guiding principles that really underpin the plan we feel very strongly that we need to rely on our national state and local health officials and our leaders to make health decisions we do have a district nurse but we rely on the

expertise of the cuyahoga county board of health and we are aligning our plan very closely with the ohio department of health risk levels as we think about covid19 we right now are focusing as dr barnes said one of the main pillars one of the main guiding principles is safety concerns we are doing our best to in the forefront focus on mitigating risk we cannot eliminate risk for our staff and our students but we are doing our best with our plan to mitigate that risk um and then really focusing on equity and access that we recognize that our remote options need teachers to direct those options we recognize that if we are remote or for families that choose the e-learning lakewood option we need to ensure that our families have devices and that they have connectivity

and then certainly one of the things that is critical as we focus on our students is their social emotional state and making sure that we are to provide the best continuity of care for our students and then certainly as we always are we have based approached this plan with the idea of being mindful of our finances and our resources mr zeeman has been at the table quite a bit for our discussions and certainly as we think about our resources that we recognize that we are in partnership with our teachers with our administrators with all our staff and then certainly as well with our families so as i begin to take you a little bit more specifically through the plan i just want to again reiterate as dr barnes said pillar number one for us to

focus on was safety and then pillar number two was folding in some level of academic choice for families so basically you can see that our plan is broken down into the ohio department of health levels and you'll notice if we are at level one which is our yellow level we are looking to have all students back in school all day we will establish spacing in that scenario that would promote three foot distancing and then just a little later i'll talk with you about the safety precautions that would be in place if we are all back in school at level one if the district or the county finds itself in levels two or three which is the orange or red we feel it necessary to establish spacing that would allow for six foot distancing and the

way that we can do that is to have half the students attend one day and the other half of the students attend on the next day so basically we're calling that a partial return students are not back all five days they're more on an every other day type model and then if the county reaches uh level four or the purple level we would be fully in remote learning with our teachers working remotely and our students working remotely i did mention the option of academic choice and when we think about safety first we recognize that there are some families that do not have a comfort level with their children returning to school during this first semester so families would have an option of choosing what we're calling e-learning lakewood which would be a fully online program

and the program looks a little bit different at the elementary level k5 than it does at the 6 through 12 level so basically the next few slides that i have just reference those plans and give a little bit more verbiage around the specifics so basically um there is the all in which is we all come back we have spacing that would promote three foot distancing and that is only if we're yellow or level one um the other possibility is that we are in a partial return and that would be if we are in level two or three red or orange half the students attend one day the other half attend the next day the only exception to that would be our preschool because right now the ratio is one to nine and we believe that

we can have enough spacing in a classroom for those nine students to um you know we don't need to reduce that to four one day and five the next um and then again if we are in purple or level four the district would be in what we're calling remote learning for families that are not comfortable with this option of returning either in full or impartial they can make the choice to do e-learning lakewood for the entire first semester and then what i do want to also share with you just briefly is some of the safety precautions that would be in place associated with these varying levels if we think about level one the safety precautions are are very similar to level two and three with a few differences so i'll go through level one and

then i'll share with you the differences in level two and level three so safety precautions at level one would be that families are taking the student's temperature at home before they leave for school we will also be doing some spot checking for students at school just so that families recognize that this is an important component of our return plan all staff and students will be required to wear face coverings and we will again as i said we will work with creating spacing that would promote the three foot distancing we will have hand sanitizer in every classroom in the cafeteria other you know common areas we will have cleaning supplies available in the classroom with intensive cleaning that will occur the students will eat in the lunchroom but the lunchroom space will be expanded so that

we can maintain that three foot distancing so just an example it might be cafeteria and gym is where the students are eating their lunch water fountains will not be accessible but students will be allowed to have a water bottle with them and fill up a water bottle but there will be no taking drinks from the drinking fountain there will be no visitors there will be no use of lockers there will be no shared supplies and i think about this often at the elementary level you know we have a container of crayons that everybody uses we we would not have that in a level one scenario field trips would not be permitted when we are in a level one scenario and there would be no large group events no assemblies that kind of gathering and our

safety precautions are very similar if you transition to levels two and three but we would obviously have half the students attending which would enable us to have the spacing to promote six foot distancing in the classroom and then before and after care would be operational it would be operational for the students on the day that they attend school and then in level four this is a scenario where students are home so many of the precautions are similar we would not have after care in that scenario breakfast and lunch would be provided in a grab and go model as we have done last and we believe that we would athletics would not be occurring in that scenario the one other thing i do want to share is that in in levels two and three in our

partial return as well as our remote special education services might look slightly different than they would if we were in a full return so that is where we are with our plan i did want to share one thing with you that i thought would be beneficial to share we used the additional days at the end of last school year students finished a little bit early and we spent a good deal of time engaging our staff in work around remote teaching and learning we were able to develop a tool and i'm going to make my way over there and pull this up for you but it is called our remote teaching and learning hub and basically it offers a variety of learning tools and resources for teachers to help them develop their skills in terms of

remote learning so training on google classroom for our staff in grades three through 12 training on zoom training on seesaw which if we go remote will be the platform that we will use in grades k through 2. so i'm going to just pull that up for you so this is our remote learning hub you can see that we have foundations of strong remote teaching we have information on seesaw information on thank you dr barnes [Music] so basically you see our remote teaching and learning hub we provided professional learning to all of our staff in the spring using this hub some of the information that will continue to be available to all our staff it's been available this summer and it continues to be available to them upon their return is the foundations of strong remote

teaching there are presentations there are videos here for all of the staff to access information on seesaw which is again the platform that we will use for grades k through 2 if we are remote information on google classroom which is the platform we will use in grades three through twelve we have uh also information on social emotional learning for students and we were able to partner with many of our community partners to offer numerous sessions to our staff on how to support the social emotional well-being of our students if we do have to transition to remote and then this actually links to what dr g and mr labazzo spoke about but we also added a tab this summer that we may rename diversity equity and inclusion but it is an anti-racism tab which has all

kinds of resources for our staff around that particular topic so at this point i would take questions if anybody has mrs peter bushland jeremy we're in we're in this era of so much new terminology where people are using terms synonymously that may not may mean different things as you were talking you're just two uh two ideas or two terms that i'd like you to differentiate just so that we're all on the same page and that is the difference between e-learning lakewood and remote learning that's that's a great question and we intentionally have been calling these different things because we knew that that would be a little bit confusing for families the our e-learning platform is something that was established for families that do not want to return so basically at the elementary level we will

be using ohio online learning at the middle school and high school level will be using apex but basically the e-learning this is students will work at their own pace they will complete content on their own they will be assigned a lakewood city school teacher to support them but it may not be the teacher that they would have were they attending school so the e-learning platform is also a semester-long commitment once parents choose that for their child or their children they remain in that for the entire semester the other thing that i think has been a little bit confusing for families is that there is no cost for the e-learning option i think some families on their website but there might be a charge our families would not be charged lakewood would be covering that cost

for the families remote learning is different from that in that that will be you know if we're in full return we're in partial return i'm with my classroom teacher uh oh the county has reached that risk level of purple the students that i go to school with in the classroom and my teacher we transition to remote learning so e-learning is a completely separate option from what a student would get were they to return to school and we needed to transition to remote that's a great question thank you so can you give us just a little bit more information about what the the middle tier the partial return to school what that looks like for like i don't my my kid's last name is barcelona if my barcelona kids are in the school what what does

it actually look like for them and likewise in the buildings and what's operating we are still meeting with teachers and and having final discussions on that um we were envisioning an every other day type model so um if a through k were to come on one week you know monday wednesday friday the next week they would be tuesday thursday because it would alternate every other day we would look at working up a schedule for families like a calendar for families so that they would know if i'm a through k these are the days through the entire semester if we're remote that i would be um excuse me if we're partial that i would be attending okay okay just real quick so if if you had a household where you might have children with different last

names would it so that they'd be able to go the same day yes different ages too so if if we are a family with students that have different last names in the family we will work with that family to get all the students in that family on the same schedule so that's a that's a great question dr palumbo can you explain a little bit more why that alignment is is we've taken that into consideration absolutely what we recognize is especially in a partial return model if we have a family either a single parent family or a two-parent family where both adults are working it is oftentimes critical that the older siblings are able to attend on the day the youngers are are attending to help get them situated at school walk them there walk them

home and then certainly that the older would be home on the same day that the younger is home we recognize that that's critical for many of our families so if there are different last names we will work with that family to align so that all those students in that family attend on the same day and are off on the same day or home on the same day if i could follow up i think for i i completely can envision this i shouldn't say completely i can envision that on the elementary level can you speak to any nuance for middle and high school given sometimes their schedules are so different day-to-day like is it that there'd be would there be a new kind of schedule those weeks possibly or would they be following their schedule just

on the days that they're in school so when we are in a partial return they will follow their regular schedule on that day that they're in school and then the day that they are home they will have homework that's provided for them to do that day at home so they will adhere to their regular schedule when they come to school in a partial return model oh mr faber stepping away from that for a second um we're seeing a lot of different plans and we hear we're talking about lakewood city schools but there's various variety of other school districts and other school entities that are advertising how they're going to do things and it really is a a mixed bag but one of the things that they talk about is the recess thing now we have

multiple schools that are geographically located in neighborhoods every school yard is not the same size the same number of square feet or laid out the same so one of the questions that comes up is what about recess for particularly the younger kids that that's a great question so we absolutely believe that our younger students do need to have opportunities for recess that is one of our our main priorities as soon as we have our principals back we want our principals back with us elementary principles in that discussion about recess because every playground is different in the district we need to get their sort of problem solving ideas at the table we do know that children can use the playground equipment we'll be folding in some additional precautions as hand sanitizer as you go on your

way out hand sanitizer as you come in and looking potentially and talking through with principles are we going to group students during recess and have maybe some different stations that you might go to when when we're all back maybe one day i'm at at this kind of station which is like a walking and an exercise station and the next day my station involves being on the equipment the next day i have a different station but we we want to engage our principal's elementary principles in that discussion thanks that's one of the confusions on this i think is the fact that we are tied to the the county and the state the color code to make it i guess one way to approach it as as we go from let's say let's say go from hopefully

we're at three now i go to one instead of purple i don't want to go that way so we'll go from three to one what's the district's response to that if we're set up to do every other day remote learning etc do we stay there for the semester or do we make a change in the middle so we do envision based on the um the the level we do envision that there may be some change throughout the semester what we know is that the governor's task force reviews the data on wednesday they make their declaration for lack of a better word on where the different counties are on thursday so we would commit to that friday communicating with families letting them know what the next week would look like we we really feel and i

don't know that i've mentioned it before but we referenced the recommendations of the american academy of pediatricians and they recognize the importance of students being in school and and that there are maybe more concerns with students not being in school than students being in school so to the greatest extent that we can do so safely we want the students in school with us if i could follow up to that um i suppose i'll ask the purple question i hope it i hope it never comes of course we all hope it never does but would you anticipate waiting until the following monday in a purple scenario you know we get the word on thursday that's a pretty emergent for lack of a better term you know scenario a pretty significant scenario would you anticipate waiting uh

or would that be would you anticipate that being into effect the following day um i i think we would work to give families that time to make some arrangements if they needed them but certainly you know we would um look at what how urgent is the situation and did we need to make the transition more quickly than waiting till monday the next week okay and if i could um follow up on a couple of e-learning questions those who choose that that um model would they be able to participate um in the after-school extracurriculars whether it's um you know whether it's band whether it's sports or other other clubs yeah so so definitely if we have athletics or extracurriculars in operation students who choose e-learning what i've been telling families that have reached out to me

and certainly families are welcome to do that to email me to call the board dr barnes secretary ann nab will will transfer the you know give me a note to to return the call to the family but one of the things that i've been telling the families is if you choose e-learning lakewood you are still a part of the lakewood family when first semester is over if you decide you want to be back in school and we're back in school we welcome you back with open arms you will have a lakewood educator assigned to be the facilitator for that student and athletics and extracurriculars are open to these families that choose e-learning lakewood thank you and and are those um are those e-learners part of a are they on their own are they part of

a class or part of a community i mean how how are they so they are definitely part of a group at the element part of a lakewood group at the elementary level we envision our elementary providers you know pulling the group that they're working with together or small groups together on zoom at the the middle school and high school you're still assigned a lakewood teacher as a supporter or a liaison it's a little more independent a little more self-paced but absolutely we envision our e-learning lakewood families as still a part of our lakewood community our lakewood family and having access to the supports that those students need great we're bringing teachers back a week and a half before the the students there's a lot there's a lot going on here obviously uh but do you

want to share just some of what you're going to use that time to do and and i don't know how you're going to plan because you don't know if you're going to be red purple or whatever right yeah and it seems to me that this this planning time is probably going to be very important it is it's going to be crucial for us our district nurse katie corrigan is going to be working up training for staff on safety precautions health precautions and working up some lessons that she will share with our staff that they can tweak for their students so that students have an understanding of why the mask is important why the mask needs to cover your nose and your mouth not wear it like i'm wearing mine at the moment you know those

kind of things are going to be critical for our our staff to understand and then for our staff to be able to relay to the students the other thing that will be critical is it will we envision lakewood staff providing the support on the e-learning platform all of our staff need to be oriented all of our staff that are going to be providing that will need to be oriented for our staff that may be returning and doing you know a partial return in the classroom if we're in a red or orange they need to work with the custodial team and their principal to get their classroom set up because it's going to be critical that their classroom is set up with appropriate distancing and that they have the opportunity to to develop seating charts so

that if there is a need we know who was seated where that kind of thing as well as some of our uh more traditional professional learning we have um a year two of our um world language program where we're beginning that so we you know need to get some of our staff some additional training our world language staff training in our year two resources so there'll be some traditional professional learning there'll be some professional learning around these changes that are coming and then setting up some kind of orientation and acclimation for families because families are going to need information whether i'm e-learning or whether i'm you know back in i need to understand what this is going to look like so that will be a portion of the time will be used for that you

know going back to something mr callahan said uh and or whoever raised the curricular program we also have some teachers next year who are going to be available to work with students on the social emotional issues and in the trauma just of transitioning to this kind of a learning plan will those teachers be available to to students who are signed up to do e-learning as well yeah so we we do have at the elementary level now five student wellness specialist teachers so they would absolutely be available to our elementary school students and then our middle school and high school students will absolutely still have access to you know their guidance counselor or any of the um you know additional community partner resources that we have access our e-learning students will have that actually important for

families yeah mr shaughnessy um just could you speak a little to the possibility that um a school or several schools or even a classroom might be moving through different phases yeah that that's a great point thank you so you know we are using the um levels as a guide but we recognize that if we have a situation where you know we have either a building where our attendance has dropped significantly for students and for staff because many families are ill teachers are ill a specific building may need to transition to remote or even if we have a situation where a classroom is in quarantine for two weeks because there was a student who you know was i identified with the virus that particular classroom assuming everybody is well enough to participate while they're in quarantine

could transition to remote learning so i guess i would ask so that identifies if an entire say classroom series of classrooms or even a building for for individual students were they to have to quarantine as a result of potentially i mean who knows what just the result of their is do is it is it sort of like when kids have an extended illness would the teacher be providing yeah absolutely so so if i am in if i as a student i'm in quarantine for two weeks and i'm not able to come to school those are obviously medic medical excusals and then the teacher would be providing homework for the student to do assuming that they're healthy and and up to doing that mr callahan that's going to depend on on the conversations with our teaching

staff as we start to troubleshoot and say how can this work how can that work there's a lot of work to be done between now and and august is still just to get um everybody in the district on the same page and understand how we can make this work yeah i i would absolutely agree if i could um thank you president petrie barcelona if i could follow up on the color question so the week of august 31st it's a sort of an orientation type of type of week and uh um we the students may be in uh part time um as they as they adjust am i correct in that and so we'll go ahead so so that week itself would be orientation and acclimation so assuming that we're in red we would bring groups

of students in with you know parents to get acclimated to the school year and understand you know how things are going to go if we're purple we would do kind of an acclimation that would or of an orientation that would occur via zoom so that we're not bringing people together in a purple scenario do we at the same time have plans to orient families that are doing e-learning yes yes and so then that following week is when um that would be the week that um is at the week of labor day yeah that would be the first the first uh regular week if you will of the school year some folks have asked will we commit to a particular color in advance of that so that we kind of know or or could that be

a fluid situation up until the week you know up until the week before well the one thing that i think has will will help us is that if we are red with a star we know that we're red trending toward purple right so i think we will have a sense of where where are we in terms of the indicators that are being used and do we envision that we will start that week purple do we envision that the star will come away and we will be able to have that partial return okay um one thing i'm wondering with the um people who or students who will be participating in e-learning lakewood is it independent of any schedule especially for middle and high school if independent of any schedule they would have had had they been

in person like do they get to pick their courses or take as many as they want like you do in college or is it are they going to be assigned a a course study basically how does that work so um with the exception of the heist like there are some elective options that exist at the high school for students but what we will be for our students who are in e-learning is we will be working with the the entity that's providing that as well as our guidance counselors to help align these are the things that this particular student who per you know a middle school student needs to be taking they need to be taking um english language arts math social studies science they were you know an eighth grader who was slated to begin

spanish one those are all things that would be acclimated into their e-learning courses was that your question i guess i was also just wondering if they want to take other classes that they wouldn't have been able to take at the lakewood city schools in person could they take more classes or different classes or something yeah so so apex does have some options particularly at the high school level and i'm i believe we have like a music appreciation through apex and art appreciation so if i was somebody who you know had planned to be taking an art class i i'm gonna do e-learning um lakewood for the high school i could potentially take an art appreciation through apex or music appreciation and i might add apex is a learning management system that we currently use at

lakewood high school now and we have been i believe mr walter mentioned to me for multiple years this is a tool that we've had for children there's some familiarity with that that learning management system with some of our students and families and staff and staff good board any other questions right now i know i know we'll have a lot too but just to at least conclude this part of it so okay thank you thank you thank you thank you dr palumbo this concludes the superintendent's report actually can i offer something yeah sorry we will be having a facebook live tomorrow at 4 p.m where we are poised to answer more questions as we are receiving them um so please if you're out there watching or here uh please tune in um because our goal is

to um really work to answer questions um as best we can so that our families can have all the information at their disposal before making these these tough decisions um actually can we just go over some of the important dates and sort of instructions for families and parents right so i'm sorry like the survey what are we asking of the parents in the community sure sure thank you so the survey has been extended understanding that more time is needed to july 27th what we really plan on doing and we've been talking about internally how to do this of course the survey really gives us an idea of what families are thinking based on the plans and the choices that we've provided so when the 27th comes and goes and the survey kind of closes that'll

give us an idea how many teachers we'll have available to support e-learning lakewood and how many families are choosing this as as an option then i think what we would do at that time is send out almost a registration form post the closing of the survey to say okay now that the survey has come and gone we've gotten feedback this is a registration link that you click on to opt into e-learning lakewood those who do not we will just assume that their children will be coming back to school so if if you've made a decision and you've changed your mind by the 27th you'll still have an opportunity as a part of that link or that opt-in process when we send that out to to make a final decision post july 27th but at least

right now the information allows us to begin to plan the staffing necessary to be able to accommodate all of these different options and and do we envision that the registration for e-learning lakewood would that have a moment of time would that would have a deadline or could it be yeah it has to so that we can um assign students to teacher rosters and begin to plan for the opening of school on the 31st okay we haven't set that date no no i i understand i just want to make sure given the assembled and the people watching from home what what what we need to at least consider timing wise and and things like that thank you for bringing that up may i follow up with a question for dr barnes please um you mentioned the

facebook live tomorrow afternoon at four o'clock for those who who aren't able to make it or don't uh access things via facebook would the would the faq be the the the means for answering most questions as they're submitted and and i'm assuming that it is um what would be the sort of expectation on the frequency with which the the faq be updated great question as as we are trying to manage the volume we believe within 72 hours uh hopefully sooner than that we should be responsive to any question that's submitted as a part of the faq in addition to that we will continue to do outreach using virtual means and if you have a question that is more pressing as dr palumbo indicated while at the podium please call the board office and ask to

either have dr palumbo's voice mail or you can email her i know her and assistant superintendent nits wiki has been calling families um every day and talking through some of their questions so in addition to the update of the faq if there's something pressing that you need to to to know prior to the faq being updated just please reach out and someone will get back to you the board office dr palumbo assistant superintendent this wiki thank you thank you anything else on the superintendent's report at this point okay thank you dr barnes so next is the time for communications i'm going to talk a little bit about how we're going to do it because this will be one of our marathons for communications if you're with me and us five years ago we had a

similar evening so with that what i'll be doing is opening up communications first to the board and the administration i'll then be opening up the lectern for anybody here present who would like to address the board we do ask with all of these that we do ask that you state your name and your address and keep your comments to approximately three minutes that said if somebody's interested in a little bit longer that'll be okay but just know that i we want time for everybody to be able to speak do not if you can please do not all assemble at the lectern i will not close public comment until everybody has had a chance to speak when when i do open it up so take your time and we'll get everybody covered as has been the

practice under the ohio revised code or the rules under sunshine law that have allowed us to not only meet remotely but also sort of live stream and have these live meetings we also have a number of comments that were submitted prior to the meeting that i'll be reading into the record and so those will be there one note with those i do want to make clear is all anything related to questions or concerns about the reopening plan will be taken in and then of course moved on over to have a question through the faq and other systems but there may not be answers right now public comment is to address the board on topics and and share your thoughts and concerns which we'll listen to but we won't necessarily have an answer or have a

q a session so to speak the the facebook live tomorrow is one of those opportunities and then again we do encourage you to reach out to administrators if you have more specific questions overall i do did want to note when i do get to the electronic questions there were some unfortunately where people did not identify themselves i want you to know if you were one of the persons that i that didn't identify yourself but we are still going to move your question over but i will not be reading it into the record because part of the public process is you knowing who we are and we knowing who you are and asking the questions so i just want to make that known that if you are watching us right now and for some reason you

don't hear your question it may have been because you didn't identify yourself but we'll make sure again like i said it moves over to the administration so it can still be part of the faqs and things like that so with that board members uh you wish to communicate at this time i have a few notes if i please go ahead mr callahan thank you i appreciate it um i i would first just like to make a statement of acknowledgement of the the hard work of the district teachers and administrators who've been involved in the plan um i think that the plan is practical and that its fluid nature allows for the appropriate action to be taken in times of of increased risk i would like to acknowledge the the difficult decisions that families are making

as they weigh risks as they weigh benefits of their specific situation for example many of us have loved ones who either live with us or for whom we we provide care um who may have increased vulnerabilities to coven 19. um and in my case you know many in many families rely on loved ones for assistance with child care um and and find that they're not comfortable you know continuing to do so and for some that's that's not an option as well um as i speak my children are at their their grandmother's house they're outside their their social distancing i hope that's tough with uh with a three and a half year old and the other young ones um and as much help as it is for for my wife kristen and me to have have

you know my mother involved uh um with the children occasionally and responsibly it's also a huge benefit to to have her interaction with her loved ones you know she's otherwise often often alone my father lives in a residential memory care facility and i say i say this um you know and as the weather changes here and as school starts visits to to to her may may not uh be an option for us and i say this uh not as a sort of a woe is me statement it's it's i think that that's reflective of uh many of the concerns that that that community members members have that's a reality that that many of us um face and i know that there there are teachers who are in who are in similar scenarios you know that

is having loved ones who are vulnerable by age or or by other uh circumstance and and need to plan accordingly and and make very very difficult um decisions i just i just wanted to make a statement of acknowledgement of of the difficulties that that that many of us um face and um you know through all of this i've heard some some really great ideas and collaboration efforts among among community groups just this morning i heard from a group of of hayes parents who are making considerations to look after each each other's children and to collectively commit to helping with the education process you know while also committing to act responsibly you know when outside of that group with regard you know to exposure to the virus um you know this this parent was considering e-learning

versus the the in-school option and actually referenced a couple of things just the wonderful leadership at hayes and and our award-winning custodian chris cantor at hayes as a reason for wanting to be back in the building if if at all you know possible and comfortable for them in that group um you know the bottom line is that again these are very difficult times and difficult decisions um i was going to go through several questions i think i've already asked several of them um that that folks have been kind of uh getting to me they the ones that kind of come up repeatedly but i'm going to assume that they're going to be asked here momentarily and should they not be i'll be sure to forward them off but thank you fine thank you any other

board members well i i would echo mr comments you know it's although our children my children are now parents themselves we have eight grandchildren that are in lakewood near lakewood and out of state and i know that all these parents are weighing all these options and all these decisions much with the same considerations that mr callahan was was just pointing out and it's a very difficult situation and it's changing well as we are trying to put plans in place tomorrow or the next day everything can change again we have to respect the individual families desire to do what works best for them and i appreciate all of the options and the the discussion that dr palumbo presented because uh there are going to be some some plans that work and some plants don't work for

different families these are times like we've never been through before and i i hope that as we are trying to lay out the best plans we can in this ever changing uh situation uh families also are trying to lay out the best plans they can in this ever changing situations to be very difficult for everybody to decide where the the best piece for them to be so we're going to have to try to get answers as quickly as we can even though it's a it's a moving target so to speak and we the board the organization the teachers the administrators in the district are sharing all of the same angst that all of our families are as well and i know everybody has the right thoughts everybody's trying to be uh proactive and cooperative but

there's so many different things pulling so many different members of this organization and the community and the families in different directions because of their particular situations that this is this is this is quite quite a project and we're going to do the best we can to get it as best we can as this thing just keeps on changing and i know you have a bundle there so i'm not going to go into other communications that i've had thank you mr favorite mrs shaunicy yeah i just wanted to say in reflecting on what we heard earlier that the i know there's been a significant effort to make the e-learning experience a good substantive experience that may be better for some children so it's not the lesser of something in this odd situation that we find ourselves

in so there's the in class selection but the other is also would have some would have value for students that were participating in it so just to just want to reiterate that because we want a good program for all our children and these are the options that they've done a lot of work on thank you indeed i'll say something just very briefly that of course we as parents citizens and for sure teachers staff and administrators some of whom of course have master's degrees phds things like that this is not in the playbook so to speak with regard to life a global pandemic of this scale that is quite real and has quite real implications for different people is something that really didn't exist in our consciousness until last march and albeit that march wasn't that

long ago still work has been accomplished to try to work through and figure out um things there um but uh to that end i do appreciate everybody that's putting the work into thinking this through and um my uh my prayers are with all the families and all the the people who work in our buildings to think through what makes the most sense for them their family their children and um their lives their needs as they as they navigate this um because again uh the world the world that we had not too long ago just doesn't exist right now and we can hope and and that there will be a world kind of like what we had not too long ago again but it's likely not going to be this year and so um with that

we have to move forward with with what we have here for this year um we're going to move forward with our kids we're going to see what we can do in in this new reality that we have and walk alongside these kids as we navigate a year that will look unlike any year that they've experienced will have experienced or that we as parents have experienced or anybody's experience and will just do the best we can so i just wanted to say i'll be thinking about all of you too as as you as you work through these things administrators any any communications you'd like to share okay hearing none we have the lectern open for anybody here assembled who'd like to address the board please state your name and address and we'll listen to what you

have to say hello my name is angela yeager and i live at 2043 arthur and i am here representing my family trying to figure out whether to spend my yeah yeah thank you is that better yeah okay thanks that's the price of being short um i'm i like many families are i'm trying to figure out what i'm going to do with my child in the fall who's entering third grade but i'm also trying to decide whether or not to send a child to school for the first time in kindergarten so i do have a few questions that i i think maybe have already been submitted but i'm going to read them on behalf of myself and other parents what data source will be used to decide on color options per specifically outside the county within

local schools is one question will the information of a student or staff outbreak be made public while keeping privacy intact appropriately will the schools do contact tracing for all the contacts made during school should a child or teacher become sick are nurses on site at every school at all times or if not what procedures will be put in place to ensure the safety of students in school if a child is positive or presumptive positive at one school and they have a sibling at another school what will the closing protocol look like same if a teacher is exposed in one school and they teach at another building this one's not even on that list but if it if a teacher teaches outside this district and is exposed at that school that they're teaching at what are

the consequences for our schools within our district what is enough of a symptom to send a student home will there be open windows at school as much as possible or will outside space be utilized at all so students can have access to the outdoors and get a break uh with regard to the e-learning platform there's a lot of discussion among parents about the the remorse that parents are feeling with their children not having a teacher that they have seen or will see and students that they have seen or will seen and losing that connection of community is there a possibility that should we go all purple would we then go to all remote learning where lakewood city teachers would be teaching those students i'll kind of repeat that one again because i think it's really

important let's say we're purple is it possible that teachers could be responsible for teaching all of the children remotely instead of using the e-learning platform oh this is so much i just want to say i used to be a high school teacher and i'm kind of glad that i retired from it right now and i really um all of the teachers out there all of the nurses and administrators who are holding us in your hands basically and making decisions for us we just really appreciate all of you and your time i know i'm probably running out of time are teachers being prepared for oh that's okay if the district is assuming that in person will happen more often than not what data is suggesting that this would be safe and then just with the teachers

i know dr barnes specifically that you really care about what teachers think and how they feel and and i just implore all of you to really listen to what the teachers say i don't know what the teachers want but i know that you will um figure out what that is i just think about my self going back into a classroom minute um yeah so that's all thank you so much for listening and considering answers to those questions as you guys move forward as you all move forward trying to stop saying you guys as you all move forward with your plans thank you thank you thank you thank you good questions michael drops 2046 marlow avenue i want to thank the board for moving to the civic so that people could attend although it is out

it is nice to watch it on on computer but it's so much better to be here a couple things i want to thank the district for all the work they've done in coming up with a plan the unfortunate thing in the plan is that we have we are at red and purple is almost here and the governor who started out in march being very effective and guiding us has sort of disappeared right now so the problem that i see and i have no skin in the game because i have nobody in school i could qualify as a grandparent i don't have any grandkids in the district the question is that i look at baseball starts wednesday the requirements for baseball players to participate is not just take not just take their test with a a

monitor and send them in and then and they can do they have a whole series of things to do and we're not requiring any of this of our kids and our kids are going to be involved with more people on a daily basis than adult usually involves unless they're in a retail type operation so this is scary i mean i i i just feel you know we need to stay home another you know unfortunately i know it's not fun having a kid home all the time and trying to education but this is too dangerous for our kids you know to go to school and as a parent if i had a kid going to school you know and getting lunch and getting them ready to go getting that tested temperature before they go out the

door is not an easy thing to do because we're just trying to get their shoes on and get them out the door so you know and the unfortunate thing is when we get to level four all the best things of school from a kid's standpoint are gone there's no band there's no music there's nothing that's the part of school that you remember you don't remember for most kids what you did you know that great math program that we had that day it's the socializing and all that stuff that we can't do for our kids and our kids are going to miss that so what we need to do is get out of this pandemic with the testing that nobody wants to do or nobody wants to provide and so we can get back to some

semblance of what school really is and what it should be for kids and i would like to recommend there's an article in the nation on the title is there are literally no good options for educating our kids this fall thank you thank you thank you mr drops would anybody else here in person like to address the board oh thank you hi there i'm glenn campbell 15305 landing avenue i want to thank you for convening this this session it's helpful to have back and forth and give and take i submitted a few questions online this afternoon so i'll wait for the answers either later tonight or during facebook live i just wanted to emphasize the need and desire certainly that my family feels and that i sense a lot of other families in the district feel

desire for flexibility as we go through this um it's such a moving target we're we're being forced to make a decision now for you know based on what we think the situation will be at the end of august many weeks from now um and i appreciate the tough position you're all in but um i want to echo some of the comments of andrea yeager in terms of um i think a lot of us are kind of leaning toward the learning option because what things are going to be like at the beginning of september is so unknown but it's really tough to just kind of subjugate your child to the isolation that that the e-learning option would bring and although i appreciate the extracurricular um opportunities um i i would i would echo andrea's comments that

i'd really like to see the option if the all-in model is forced to go to purple and everyone is remote there's some way to integrate the kids who are in e-learning with their peers and their classmates with real teachers that would be really valuable i think um also um if there's any way you could look at making the commitment to e-learning on a quarterly basis rather than semester basis it would give us all so much more of a sense of flexibility and that we're not you know subjecting our um our kids to six months of isolation um and similarly if we're in purple at the beginning of september and no one's going back right away if there could be some flexibility for those who who feel forced to choose the e-learning option to perhaps be

integrated with the the the students who are uh doing e-learning with their real teachers and kind of progress from that standpoint um that would be nice to have that flexibility as well thank you thank you thank you good evening uh christa fumbum 1524 st charles avenue my question is in regards to my six-year-old who will be going into the first grade he is a child with high anxiety surrounding change and i anticipate as well as food allergies and a lot of tummy problems so i anticipate this change in schooling and having to wear a mask and being distance from and everything being different for him to be complaining about stomach aches and what is going to be what is it going to be like for kids who are exhibiting like physical symptoms of anxiety at

school and reporting this to their teachers in terms of i'm six years old i have anxiety my stomach hurts now somebody who maybe is a nurse probably not because the schools don't have a nurse somebody in ppe or a face shield or whatever there's this child who has a stomach ache which is a symptom of potential covid comes into the classroom you know with all the things to retrieve my child who has severe anxiety who has a stomach ache and now brought to you know this isolation covert room in the school you know then this child potentially has coveted now this child goes home for a quarantine of 14 days because we don't know whether or not this is covered we don't know what this is we have to err on the side of caution

now my six-year-old is at home for 14 days um what what educationally is then my child going to be able to get in those 14 days is is he going to be quarantined because of an anxiety stomach ache at school and then coming back to school having the anxiety of being removed from a class by somebody in ppe or having to be in isolation in a covid room goes back to school has the same recurring stomach ache and like it's this cycle of will my child ever be in school because of one symptom or another if it's allergies in the fall like it's he's an allergy kid like how do you differentiate between this kid who's got these allergies and a kid who's like a potential covid outbreak and then how is how is a

child like mine going to stay in the classroom at all even if we're at at yellow i don't know how the differentiation especially if we have mas who are in the schools and not school nurses how how this is going to affect families like mine i have a lot of anxiety about it myself as you can probably see thank you thank you thank you thank you hi good evening rachel bianchik 1517 lincoln avenue i have a lot of confusion frustration stress questions but i did submit several questions online so as discussions are unfolding i had a current situation that popped into my head i'm currently working summer camp and we had a counselor that her ex's girlfriend tested positive they share custody with their 10 year old son the pediatrician would not test the sun

and quarantined him nonetheless the counselor had to then quarantine for 14 days with the possibility and no testing was going to be given and she had no child care we are always short staffed with subs within the district i've talked to numerous subs that were retired teachers or subs that go to other districts because they pay more they're not wanting to come back one of the big questions i think that anybody would have is what accommodations are being made when we are so short staffed do you close the building even if we are in an orange situation i think that's it for now thank you thank you hi everybody norah katzenberger 1128 forest road i don't have anything prepared i just wanted to uh repeat what some folks have said in terms of uh expressing

my appreciation and my support for all the work that's being done by the folks on this stage as well as a lot of the teachers and administrators and families and everybody who's trying to solve and a problem that's basically has no solution that is definitely not one that will make everybody happy and definitely not one that will serve every need that every family has i have friends in a lot of districts i know that some districts have not offered the range of options that lakewood has offered i know that some have not offered a plan yet so i know it's hard to put something out there because then it opens the floodgates for all of the feedback and input from everybody as it should i mean this is a lakewood is a full participation community

i saw the good the absolute upside of that when i was working on the school levy campaign in the spring and when we went to fully remote voting um the majority of the votes that the levy got were during that time when people had to figure out how to get their ballots and how to mail them in and all that stuff so um i was so impressed you know the percentage of the victory was great but the thing that impressed me the most was the way the the number of people who put forth the effort to support our schools and i think that that kind of attitude and support is so crucial right now as we're all navigating this very difficult situation that even though people have anger and frustration at the situation i hope

that people don't try and direct it in people because everyone's really trying hard to solve this problem and even though we're all pulling on different ores we're all in the same boat here and at some point this is going to be over and we're going to be on the other side of it and when that happens we're all going to be in the same community and we're all going to be neighbors and friends and i just want everybody to keep that in mind that uh we really got to work together on this and i appreciate everything that everybody has done um i look forward to the facebook live event i will i'm so glad to hear that people are submitting questions i've seen some pretty amazing things happening people who are considering the e-learning option

forming groups forming groups by school like okay my kid would be going to harding but they're not going to they would be in the sixth grade let's get a group together really good things are coming out of this from people trying to make it work um and i think the same thing will happen for the people who choose to send their kids so um i think you know and also the the tremendous gains we've made in terms of using technology during this time is a great thing that we'll retain after this is all over so i think that it's very difficult to make these choices and decide what's right for everybody and for your family but i think good things are coming out of this and that when we get to the other side of

it that um we'll be proud of our community as we always are so i just wanted to say that thank you everybody thank you thank you thank you okay i will ask those assembled before we totally conclude public comment just in case but otherwise i'm going to move on to the sub pre-submitted questions and comments and get them into the record from ashley graham 2070 elmwood we're asked are face shields approved as a required face covering for elementary ages from ann stahlhaber 1081 forest cliff drive given that lakewood is the most dense city in cuyahoga county and that cuyahoga county is pushing toward the purple already doesn't it seem most prudent to start the year the school year off in the most cautious way possible with a hundred percent remote learning guided by the students

classroom teachers students need support from their school community as much as possible right now but putting them and school staff in danger to do so is not wise the e-learning model does not seem to provide that support thank you for reading my question from dorothy taller 2062 mcgee street why are we not allowing the kids who will be at school to go five days a week no matter what the level below level four single parents are going to have a hard time working if kids are only going two days a week some school districts are doing five days a week from michelle carson 166 to 7 madison ave will middle schoolers and high schoolers be going to each period in a different classroom changing nine classrooms in one day is putting kids in a higher

exposure rate can we find a way to limit the kids to maybe one to four classrooms for the day teachers can move from each classroom to another sarah tetter six to examine 2049 mckinley avenue asks when will our questions submitted to the google google form be answered will each question be answered or just those you choose i need answers so i can make a decision by july 27th uh again from miss tedder can more details be released about the e-learning plan and how the lakewood teachers will support it if i choose e-learning how often will my child be in contact with a teacher from lakewood from lisa horton 17426 woodford avenue if we choose the e-learning option for our children how will band be handled how would the engineering technology project lead the way be

handled will the summer reading assignments still be a requirement from frederica excuse me frederica pasquale 1516 rockaway avenue will in-person scheduling conflicts be irrelevant if we choose e-learning for example my son was moved from an advanced biology to a regular biology class because of a conflict with concert band will he be able to take advanced biology on apex how does apex curriculum compare to classes at lakewood high school in which way is the connection with lakewood schools teachers maintained apex courses are the labels are the courses labeled honors at the same are the same as advanced at lhs example apex honors english or biology etc are they equivalent to advanced english biology etcetera would students be able to take more or different electives on apex from sharon schult 1285 bunce road for those who choose

the in person learning option what is the plan for students who need to quarantine for a period of time for example if someone is exposed to a positive or potential coveted case or they are positive themselves and they need to be home for 14 days what type of learning will they receive during that time classroom teachers will be focused on students in the buildings and e-learning is only for those that permanently choose that option so what is the plan so that those students don't lose valuable instruction time while they're out of the building in addition was there any thought given to allowing students to attend the same days every week rather than every other day for example every monday wednesday or every tuesday thursday every other day is tough for parents who need to arrange

child care consistency in the days of the week would at least allow parents to more readily find child care on the same days of every week thank you from chris williams 1304 andrews due to the high likelihood of a school building or district-wide outbreak is starting and continuing the full first semester with all students remote learning with lakewood teachers still being considered students with the highest level of need being the exception melissa vinsell on 1618 onondaga avenue writes if we choose a virtual option on our own using an approved homeschool curriculum or via an online charter school that is not the lincoln learning e-option provided by the disc district can we re-enroll our fifth grader in the gifted program and grant come january he has been in that track for the last two years but

the lakewood city school district e-learning curriculum offered is not a fit for him again we do have the option to choose our do we have excuse me let me start that again again do we have the option to choose our own online platform at our own expense with our own supervision and by adhering to all the registration requirements for homeschooling without the fear of losing his spot in the gifted classroom for january from rachel vanshik 1517 lincoln if the state of ohio moves to purple which requires another shutdown does that mean in-person students move to apex online learning if a family opts for online learning the first semester is that two days a week to follow in to follow in-person instruction model let me make sure okay jen jenna bartholomew 2093 elber avenue will there

be any before and after school care child care offered my son attended the y program through roosevelt elementary miss mercado 1351 fry avenue if we choose to do homeschooling is the commitment for the year or semester are the children going to be assisted by lakewood teachers that are assigned currently to the grades amy smith 1209 st charles avenue writes when will the submitted questions on reopening be answered can q a sessions be held to answer these questions before the survey deadline lakewood parents are being asked to make a big decision with little information ruth albertelli 1202 ethel avenue states my questions are in relation to the school reopening plan in the partial model what is meant by students will attend every other day is this meant consecutively consecutively so one week the student would attend

monday wednesday friday and the next week would be tuesday thursday or will it be the same two days each week they will attend in this same model do the students attend remotely on the days they are home if level three is described as very high risk exposure limit activities as much as possible why would we send the student staff and teachers to the buildings at all shouldn't level three be remote learning as well as level four in the e-learning model how are liquid teachers supporting the students how much interaction or supervision will there be of the students work how will the schools ensure that the student is being challenged sufficiently does the e-learning curriculum include any materials for the standard lakewood middle school classes of stem health music art or physical education why did lakewood

choose the apex system will incoming 6th grade students be provided with a chromebook for use if the e-learning option is chosen does the e-learning option begin on august 31st is there a planned orientation for that model as well to introduce students to the program and how it will be implemented or is that left up to the families to figure out from timothy hagerman 1597 victoria if chosen to do e-learning whom would be the person to ask questions to when the student needs added help will lunches be made for students to still be able to pick them up if things change can we start with e-learning and then switch to being in school being in school the two days a week what teaching on e-learning will be different when the student's doing remote learning the three

days from kristin bendel one two one two hathaway how does the system plan to support families and staff when not if members of our community die due to expos let me start over how does the system plan to support families and staff when not if members of our community die due due to exposure to covet 19 in our schools what is the option for all remote learning for the first semester considered to keep staff and children safe while focusing on the use of resources we have to ensure our most marginalized families get the support they need if so why wasn't this plan implemented from heidi walkish 1468 west clifton boulevard our daughter will be a sophomore this year at lhs she also uh i'll that might be protected information i don't want to state that

into the record but i'll share with the administration i have strong concerns over how not only my daughter but all children will be accommodated my daughter needs supports for successful learning i have a thought starting a forum a group for each grade level of parents who have children with needs these groups could meet prior to the start of the school year with the supports to brainstorm ideas on how to best improve the achievements and goals i firmly feel that teachers need to understand my daughter's learning style and her quirks prior to the start of the school year i also suggest that the parents that would like to be given the opportunity to meet with the child's team prior to the start of the school year i am so worried how this will go without direct

communication sooner than later i guess i do just want to note with that when i paraphrase some things i do want to make clear we're submitting this to the administration but i also didn't want to disclose anything in case this parent didn't fully realize that this would be read in this manner but if they'd like to resubmit we'll we'll read it fully into the record from heidi murray 13493 lake will schedule changes be possible my juniors made class choices based on conflicts in-person learning and support after spring distant learning distance learning we definitely need to adapt their schedule i would be interested in ccp at tri-c as a possible alternative if we fill out the ccp form by april 1st is ccp an option also from miss murray how are you testing to initia to

initially identify cases and to clear students and staff to return to the building from chris williams 1304 andrews avenue i've already raised this question is the board still considering having all students special exceptions aside working from home with their lakewood teachers because that it's likely where even those who opt for in school will end up anyways meanwhile families who are keeping their kids home for their family safety and for the safeties of those in the schools and the public at large get shorted as their children miss out on working with those teachers remotely why is individual preference driving this bus why are we even considering sending people back into schools when it will without a doubt cause a public health risk i suspect why but i'm super uncomfortable about it and honestly wish the board

would make the leader leadership decision to just choose to keep everyone home unless they're in absolute need of in-person services if we're truly stuck with choosing the e-learning solution being provided by the district as our best option we've submitted these e-learning specific questions and have yet to get a response we have a gt incoming fifth grader and have chosen the e-learning solution being provided by the district for her would she work under the apex product or the ohio online learning k-5 product i would think apex says she's learning above grade normal above grade normally level excuse me i would think apex as she's learning above grade level normally who is going to tell us which product and what level our student will be exploring we have a gt incoming seventh grader and have chosen the

e-learning solution being provided by the district for who her who is going to tell us which level our student will be exploring in apex for each subject does the apex product offer all the subjects that lakewood schools would normally offer our student will her math grade this year as she as as she was on the advance track count toward her high school transcripts as it would norm would have normally this year and if we miraculously don't have an outbreak this semester and we opt for in-school learning for the second semester what does the transition from apex to advanced seventh grade math look like does the e-learning solution prepare her for the second half of the year in school what if any resources are being made available for students opting for the e-learning solution being provided

by the district for example orchestra band art etc what if any extensions will be provided to gt identified students with a wep who are opting for the e-learning solutions being provided by the district i know you're trying and i know this is frustrating for everyone in an effort to make do on our end i hope that we can at least get answers to a few very basic questions from evan scharfeld one two oh excuse me one two seven what i'm just making numbers one two one oh gladys avenue is there any is there any opportunity for an option in which students would be placed into virtual classes with a teacher from their designated building this would consist of daily virtual instruction connection with the teacher and other classmates and additional self-paced assignments i feel that

all virtual option would be more valuable than the current offers of in-school or e-learning platforms i would be happy to discuss more in detail with anyone from lakewood city school district thanks and also from mr sharfeld are all students receiving chromebooks this school year regardless of the decided upon option or in school or e-learning thank you from liz sparr 1498 bell avenue is there a specific gifted path for the k-5 e-learning option what will support from a lakewood city school district teacher-certified and gifted education look like my child has already completed fourth grade math in the third grade self-contained classroom so will the fourth grade e-learning be a repeat from trisha bassett 100 to me 2040 wyandotte avenue if enough parents are opting to keep their child or children out of the classroom would it

be possible to work out another option where remote learning classes are populated by students across the district taught by teachers across the district i am able to be at home with my children but would love to have a teacher leading and grading classes having a remote class would also facilitate emotional and social learning which are as important as academics i worry about so much right now and isolation is a top concern alongside but beneath a healthy community from amber and kevin callahan i believe it got cut off i apologize if i got the end wrong 14921 clifton boulevard i have talked to many parents who have children going into first and second grade like mine quite a few are going with e-learning if class sizes in elementary are small enough would you consider allowing a

five-day a week option rather than every other day even if our county is in level two or three from trisha bassett 2040 wyandotte what will class size be if a significant number of families choose e-learning will that allow class sizes to be smaller for in-person classes from georgine session 1587 waterbury road i would like to thank you for continuing to broadcast the school board meetings i appreciate your commitment and hope and pray you are all safe i have two questions congratulations to miss chris mrs christine foote for her new position she has been appointed as the new principal of grant elementary does mrs caitlin turner have a new role or is she no longer with the district i reviewed the plans for the reopening of schools during this unusual time with the plan based on

governor dewine's four levels and county's current level there is a possibility of changes to our designation is the district considering contracting the the esc of cargo county for the entire district to use their resource program e-learning by all classroom teachers for not just going to 100 remote learning but for continuity of instruction for all students i ask this not just for a transition to remote learning but also for some students that may return after the first after the first semester or parents that may opt for them to use e-learning the second semester i understand the enormity of the situation the problem-solving required to plan for every contingency and the need to have a dynamic plan as things change daily thank you board members teachers administrators and all staff for their hard work to provide quality

education for the children of lakewood from heather fordu for e-learning how do ap advanced classes translate will my child still be able to take these classes online will my child have access to the teacher she would have had had she come to school what about electives like choir fabrics textile classes cooking if they're not able to take those classes will they be able to add to uh will they be able to add more academic classes to their schedule what will the transition look like from online to in school for maureen ditschman 1469 spring garden avenue can level 3 be changed to all remote learning the this level states very high exposure and spread this is too risky to be in school if a family member tests positive does that student stay home until all members

are cleared from the board of health how can we be sure parents do the right thing when e-learning how much teacher contact will my student have what happens if a class that my student has is not offered by apex ccp spanish 4 and wind ensemble ensemble will he need to change his class schedule and take more generic classes is apex all at your own speed or will my children log in at certain times from emily gilbert 13473 edgewater drive i love lakewood i'm excited to be sending my child to lakewood schools we registered our child after a lot of thought and consideration about options for public private charter homeschooling and selected lakewood public schools because we strongly value the community and its diversity and our commitment to this community i have reviewed all information made

available to this point regarding the e-learning option and there is actually very little in terms of absolutes and certainties there is a suggested schedule that would have my kindergartner on a computer for five hours a day one hour in each of four courses plus one elective i've been told by the assistant superintendent that this is a sample and not mandatory and that progress will be more important than actual hours spent logged in on the computer however this is not what the e-liquid materials provided thus far say when will parents be given more information regarding the actual implementation and requirements by grade level of e-learning liquid will this occur before we are required to make a selection to go live learning versus e-lakewood if not why not i want to support lakewood schools and i want

my child to go to a lakewood school but if my choice is sending her in person which i do not feel is safe having her on e-lakewood which is poorly defined and unclear with unclear expectations at this point or homeschooling i feel i'm being pushed to homeschool what opportunity will children who select learning lakewood have to interact with classmates electronically is our choice choice really to choose what we feel is in the best interest of health and safety of the physical body or emotional social health with no option for both thank you emily gilbert from kelly bednar 15426 lake avenue what protocols and communication will you be rolling out in regards to procedures in place should staff student staff student or family member test positive for covet 19 virus for the extremely covet 19 virus

how will parents who choose e-learning program be handled in the classroom so that they are not isolated what is to prevent the runny nose plan parents who intend to sign up for in-school service only to call in sick to receive at-home teacher-led instruction from glenn campbell 15305 landing ave if a student begins the in-person plan can he or she switch to the e-learning if not comfortable with the safety precautions if so how far into the quarter can the student switch who will be the lakewood city educators who will support e-learning students remotely will they have subject matter expertise will there be any interaction with other students in the student same class or grade what is the plan for e-learning students enrolled in classes that aren't offered by the apex learning platform particularly for high school

students examples include band street law wind ensemble etcetera following there it is there any way possible to allow students to opt for e-learning for just the first quarter and then have the option to switch to in-person learning for the second quarter this would be really really really helpful we're concerned that the quality of the e-learning option will be lower than in-person instruction so we'd like to minimize it as much as possible from colleen cronin 1216 summit avenue what are the cleaning disinfecting or disinfecting protocols for classrooms between and during classrooms from karen zingali afternoon as i am currently out of town and will be unable to attend the board meeting this evening i have a question i would like answered as to the 20 20 21 school year which i have haven't seen raised whether

or not a child is attending live or elearning every student is expected to follow a schedule i don't understand why a teacher can't simultaneously teach from the classroom and also be hooked up to a live feed zoom or some other program that other districts are using this will promote a more effective learning environment and children who are unable to attend in person will be and still feel connected children will be able to submit questions and raise hands personally one of my daughters had the best quarter freshman and one had the worst quarter junior now a sophomore and senior i understand that there will be a small amount of students and families that will not be able to facilitate this type of learning however we should be able to handle 90 of the students in lakewood

thank you for your time karen and frank sigali from colleen cronin 1216 summit what is the district doing to address the need for increased cleaning and disaffecting increased staff outside contractors what is the response plan if a teacher or student tests positive from kelly bednar 15426 lake avenue how will children who opt for e-learning for the e-learning program be supported in their social development needs and necessary functional growth within the classroom community what is the plan to transition e-learning program students back to the classroom how are teachers monitoring the e-learning program users and school classroom students so that both groups are given access to the same curriculum and educational materials from missy toms 1357 lakeland avenue will students who are taking ap classes be able to do it remotely how will they keep pace with

those attending in person from matt mckenna and kathleen and i apologize the last name has cut off here one two nine five enola avenue we're being asked to make a major decision with very little information and no specific plan details the problem should have been worked out in order of severity and importance first is health and safety that really means online learning instead the first priority seems to be how to get kids back in school with online learning as safe as the safe plan for all given the number and trends of covet 19 then the next step would be to opt in to use school buildings for those unable to stay home or have special needs next then should be how to engage the students and make sure there are resources for situations where parents

and guardians are not at home there should have been teacher training on google classroom and zoom engagement live recorded sessions and real-time student engagement those are the issues that should have been worked on for the last seven to eight weeks how do you maintain six feet distance in classroom hallways cafeterias etc example harding has a single hallway on each floor that is normally packed with an entire grade level how will this stressful environment affect the teacher's ability to educate the students and extremely to educate and the student's ability to learn masks all day kids sneezing or coughing for non-covered reasons seeing friends but not really interacting constant worry about the virus continual cleaning and washing hands possibly being stuck at one desk all day parents don't know because we have no details with everything that

needs to happen could more learning be accomplished virtually what happens if a student or teacher tests positive for covid19 what are the procedures protocols and school closing plans who who next has to get tested all the students and teachers in the school are just ones with confirmed contact are the tests provided by the district if teachers test positive are there enough substitutes what if a subtest positive who has worked in multiple disc schools over several weeks what resources resources will be available for students if class if a classmate or teacher gets seriously ill or dies it's not like any any other times if we were if that were to happen it's a live real threat to everyone are computers provided for e-learning are the e-learning courses the same as the liquid curriculum and if someone

takes advanced bio in school and someone takes advantage on e-learning assuming that is an option well are they the same courses one of the faqs written by the lakewood city schools asked will there be a health assessment of students entering school each day the answer was yes but that is misleading the parents are supposed to conduct an assessment before the kids leave it's not that the schools are conducting one before entering the building thank you for listening to parents concerns it is appreciated from renee leslie 17815 liquid heights i'm concerned about the dedicated hours required for the e-learning option being provided the program emphasizes that students are being are required to login five hours per day on the platform this does not seem feasible and or beneficial for lower grade students our child is entering

first grade does lake would agree with or enforce the set required daily hours for the chosen online program we are also considering an online charter school where required daily hours are much more in line with the student age limits thank you from asia mestic 1200 westlake west lake ave will e-learning students each get a chromebook ipad to borrow for the school year i wasn't sure if technology was only going to be made available to in-school students for off days what support will households get for the internet at present time at t says they've extended unlimited internet for all home customers until september 30th do you know if there's a plan or agreement in place to extend that for the entire school year we currently pay for a limited data plan and to successfully complete e-learning

we would need more data to students in our household but utility costs are rising since we are home constantly and i'm concerned about affordability thank you so much from colleen cronin 1216 summit avenue will mask wearing be mandatory on school grounds or just in the building from mark mckenzie on maplecliff was any consideration given to asking former teachers in the community to serve as pod pro proctors excuse me for students enrolled in e-learning a pod being a small group of same grade students meaning meeting as a group in a designated outdoor space when possible and online daily from renee leslie 17815 lakewood heights boulevard many parents and teachers i've spoken to are not comfortable with in-school instruction at county risk level three myself and numerous other parents are looking into home school and charter options

with the current plan due to this fact but would be comfortable enrolling in the in-school option if levels three and four were designated remote learning is there any discussion around adding a true remote learning option for risk level three local rather than outsourced the outsourced e-learning option thank you from andrea anderson 17723 franklin avenue if my children opt to go back in person but we find it too crazy eg if the pods or classes have to be kept going into quarantine if positive cases are invented in identified within the school or if the state keeps going back to purple can we choose to go virtual midway through the semester from andrew kohuth two two five two emily as of 2 30 on july 20th the faqs on the district website regarding the opening plan has

not been updated i believe that in this challenging time for all transparency is key are you planning to update the faq are you answering questions that were submitted via the website with two days until the responses are due how can parents make a sound decision when they do not have the answers they need i will just add the note there that the deadline was extended to next monday so it's not in two days from now from maryjohnson1679 elber my kids will be doing e-learning this semester my motivators have to do with my company still working from home so i don't see the need to send that send them to school this semester well except for my son who is concerned about art classes and photography since that is the field he wants to make a

career i have several questions why can't teachers teach from the classroom utilize utilizing google classrooms more efficiently to accommodate all students if all the kids stayed home there would be open room and space for teachers and staff to set up in places for their children to work and utilize staff who would have been laid off to assist with daycare will kids who are e-learning especially the at the elementary level be included in their classroom somehow google classroom could be utilized for socializing as well as teaching kids to use social media responsibly will high school kids in arts and music be allowed to attend those classes at the high school will mental health services be provided to teachers staff and students if and when someone gets sick and quarantine isolation happens or dies if a teacher

or staff get the disease will all the kids in the class and families be tested through the school system the school systems cleveland clinic partnership since it's so hard to get an appointment now are there enough substitutes for teachers if they are sick longer than the class being quarantined since symptoms show up two days into the infectious period will teachers and staff be tested weekly thank you for all that you are doing for our kids i do think elearning is best for our family good luck tonight [Music] let's see here from dana m at one five five five woodward can you please address the reasoning that the children that elect homeschooling aren't being taught virtually based on the tutorial this appears to have very little teacher interaction why not allow the classes to be done

via zoom i feel this would help with the transition back to classroom work in january should families elect that option from brittany o'connor 2173 mars avenue how will ap classes be taught if e-learning do we choose the apex schedule for seventh grade or would the school be will the school offer guidance in setting it how much interaction will remote students have with lakewood teachers will interaction be by video call email or what format how good is the e-learning program for gifted students especially students who are not self-motivated driven or organized if we go back to in-person in january how will the transition from e-learning to in-person go will e-learning and in-person lessons be somewhat aligned if an in-person and our status if in person and our status goes to purple will those students continue to

be taught remotely by their classroom teachers or do they switch to apex from amy herberger one four four eight buns road lakewood of course everybody's in lakewood why is lakewood not having a hybrid classroom option utilizing webcams allowing students to join from home just as though they were in attendance at school that is a way all can have synchronized learning experience with a teacher while keeping all students engaged in their assigned classrooms and in line with their peers why is this not an option if it is done in the classroom during school hours recording lessons are being present via zoom what is stopping lakewood from providing this option to students and teachers when other schools are implementing this to be a flexible option during this challenging time how is the school developing an infrastructure to

adjust the to the changing times how is the grading going to be consistent from e-learning no teacher to the in school option will the grades be counted as the same how will the school be providing west shore classes via e-learning how is the school district going to keep a child learning without providing any actual teacher what will enrichment look like in this environment if a child has been identified what went into selecting these e-learning programs did the district look into other options other than what was already in place after reviewing these programs apex learning reviews have not been favorable what has been your feedback about these programs how is the school prepared for new the new tomorrow since we will all have some form of remote learning in the upcoming year how will the school

district find appropriate substitute substitutes if a teacher contracts covid what would that look like for a classroom setting how would that translate remotely and then we have questions from ken clunk and angie clunk110 maplecliff along with patricia berardi and brian berardi on 1533 bell and autumn mckenzie and mark mckenzie maplecliff lakewood ohio collaborative analysis of local options for school during covet 19. this document is a public document document being shared with the lakewood ohio school board and district to gain clarity and increase options during covit 19 for families of the lakewood ohio school district the document was reviewed and collaborated on by hundreds of families in the district with the intention of organizing and addressing as many concerns as possible so that everyone can make a timely and informed decision we appreciate the time effort

and energy everyone involved in the decision-making process has poured out we all parents staff board and district have the students interest in mind and just want to make sure we're offering the best options for all we expect great things from an extraordinary school system overarching goals we'd like a declaration that the school district is making decisions with health and safety prioritize first we want a remote option with liquid teachers with liquid curriculum and liquid classmates can we confirm if enough students are doing e-learning that a local teacher is being assigned per cohort if for in person we want extreme safety protocols and all information of any kovid 19 case in school to be shared for the safety of all teachers staff students and families questions for clarity on how and why a decision was made

regarding options offered do all members of the board district agree and understand that covid19 is airborne it can also be spread on surfaces has serious health repercussions up to and including death is often spread pre-symptomatic asymptomatic can be spread easily into an entire group if just a single person in the group doesn't have a mask on and is currently on a wildly upward trajectory of cases and spread in ohio given the spread and likelihood that even the in-person option would be remote for much of the year was an all remote option with local liquid teachers and curriculum considered can you provide safety guidelines you are relying on to make these decisions why did the district decide to have read in person when so many other districts have that as remote what considerations have been made

for irreversible changes i.e number of people who leave the schools for private or homeschool and possibly don't return how much did the budget affect decisions compared to safety questions regarding safety protocols specifically what data source will be used to decide on color options is this data being reviewed by who and being made public it is said that lakewood would have even more localized tiers perhaps by school where is that data coming from and will it be made public throughout the year will the information of a student staff outbreak be made public with appropriate privacy intact will the schools do contact tracing for all contacts made during school are nurses on site at every school at all times what is the specific safety protocol should a positive or presumptive positive occur if a child is positive

or presumptive positive at one school and they have a sibling in another school what will the closing protocol look like same if a teacher is exposed in one school and they also teach in another building if a student or teacher gets covet 19 will the remaining student teacher need students or teacher need to be in quarantine for 14 days as well will a cough be enough to send a student home for 14 days what about allergies how is a determination going to be made err on the side of caution what hvac upgrades will be made will fresh air be brought in at all times will there be wind open windows as much as possible why was the decision made to have red bee in person instead of remote push for remote learning extremely push for
