on that table. All right. Welcome everybody to the January 28th uh regular board meeting to meet the board of education. Can I have a roll call, please? >> Mr. Parmo >> here. >> Mr. Green >> here. >> Mr. Rosa >> here. >> Mr. Hess >> here. >> Mr. Trusty >> here. Stand for the pledge of allegiance. To the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Mr. Lynn, we're ready for you. >> All right. Thank you. Good evening everyone. >> Good evening. Hi. How are you? Um well, before I I get started, uh January is uh school board appreciation month. So, I just want to give a shout out and recognize our board members. Thank you
for all that you do. Um, I know that sometimes public service is a thankless job, but you guys um, collectively stick together and you help us implement all the programming that allows us to do the wonderful things that we do in Mayfield. So, I want to say thank you very much and team, could we please give our board members a round of APPLAUSE and here's some thank you letters from our MHS students. So, pass handwritten by our interact club. Um, so we do have a video. Maybe we can play it uh here at the end. Um, but good evening students, parents, and guests. Uh, thank you to the board of education, Dr. Barnes, Assistant Superintendent Lean, uh, Treasurer Snider, uh, and all in attendance tonight. Uh, tonight we are here to recognize some truly outstanding
members of the Mular High School community. Uh, this evening, we are honoring four exceptional students and two remarkable staff members. Our students being recognized tonight are Michael Fapiano, Michael Lynn, Catrol Bowie, and Rosanna Gaboan. Our staff members being honored are Mrs. Jenna Zola and Mr. Steve Shyrie. Students, please stand and be recognized. Let's give a round of applause. Students, please have a seat. We're practicing for graduation right now. I love that. I love the power. Uh these four students uh three here currently uh exemplify excellence in different ways. Uh but they share something important in common. They're true leaders. Last month they attended one of our staff meetings and each spoke about a teacher who made a lasting impact on their life. I've been to many staff meetings, but I can tell you this one
felt different. We left that meeting inspired and some of our teachers left in tears because of the power of our students words before you tonight. I firmly believe that strengthening human connection is how we develop the next generation of fearless leaders. These students did exactly that and their futures are decidedly bright. On behalf of Mayfield High School, thank you to the board of education for allowing us to celebrate these incredible students and staff this evening. You're about to hear stories that truly reflect the very best of the Mayfield community. And at this point in time, I would like Mr. Gertity to come forth to recognize Mr. Michael Fapiano. Mr. security. Thank you, Mr. Lynn. Michael, good evening. It is my great pleasure to honor Michael Fabiano for his outstanding achievements and contributions to Mayfield High
School. Like his parents who graduated from Mayfield before him, Michael is one of those students who truly represents the very best of what it means to be a Mayfield Wildcat. He is strong academically, deeply involved, committed to service, and a natural leader in every sense of the word. Academically, Michael has distinguished himself at the highest level. He holds an outstanding 4.2 GPA and has been a member of the National Honor Society during both his junior and senior years. He is also a member of the National Technology Honors Society through Excel Tech for both years, proving that his excellence extends well beyond just one classroom or one program. Michael's leadership is just as impressive. He has served as president of student council for three years and as senior class president this year. That doesn't happen by
accident. That happens because people trust you, Michael, respect you, and believe in you. He has also given back in a big way. completing over 250 hours of community service, including coaching a youth baseball team and helping with countless events at Mayfield High School. Michael understands that leadership is not about titles, it's about service. Athletically, Michael has been a four-year member of the football team and also played baseball and basketball his freshman year. He is also a graduate of our effective leadership academy and a participant in Educators United through the teach program at Beachwood. One of Michael's teachers, Mr. Steve Shyrie, in attendance this evening, shared this about him. Michael's success in AP calculus is the result of his hard work, dedication, and commitment. No matter how challenging the lesson may be, he keeps that great
smile on his face, and he gets after it. He is a leader amongst his peers and helps others without judgment. And as great of a student as Michael is, he is an even better person. And the last line says it all. Michael hopes to return to Mayfield one day as a teacher at the elementary or middle school level to impact the next gener generation of Wildcats. And I can tell you that the future is in good hands. Michael, we're incredibly proud of you. Congratulations, Michael Fabiano, on his welldeserved recognition. All right. >> Well, gift bag certificate for Michael. >> Take the photo over this way, guys. It went just with Michael. Come on. >> We're actually missing one. Thank you. So, fun fact, uh in the staff meeting I was referencing I uh was talking
about Mikey Michael and I said, "He's like a second son to me." And then after the staff meeting, somebody came up and says, "Hey, don't you have two sons? He's like a third son to me." So, shout out to my boy Manny Bowlingart for the MHS bowling. But love you, Mikey. Proud of you. Um and uh our next honore this evening will be Michael Lynn and he will be introduced by Miss Jacqueline Baker. Come on up. Miss Jacqueline Baker power. >> Thank you. Good evening. It's my great privilege to honor Micah Lynn for outstanding achievements and contributions to Mayfield High School. Micah is the kind of student who represents the legacy of a true Mayfield Wildcat. Hardworking, committed, quick to laugh at a joke, humble, and quietly confident, he has built an impressive high school
career not by chasing attention, but by consistently doing the right things the right way. Academically, Micah has earned a strong 3.5 cumulative GPA and is a member of the exercise science program at XLT. He is also a graduate of our effective leadership academy and has served on the principal advisory committee for all four years, a reflection of the trust and respect he has earned both from students and staff. Athletically, Micah's resume speaks for itself. He was the goalie of the Mayfield varsity soccer team his freshman and sophomore years and the Mayfield football team his junior and senior years. This year he served as team captain and was named all Ohio honorable mention defensive line. An incredible honor and a testament to his work ethic, toughness, and leadership. But what truly defines Micah goes well beyond
statistics and awards. He is also a member of the St. Pasco's Balon youth group and he is someone who consistently treats others with respect and kindness which is what we need more of in this world right now. His English teacher, Mrs. Schaefer, shared this about him. I had the privilege of teaching Micah Lynn in both middle school and high school. Micah brings heart, humor, and integrity into everything he does. Whether it is in the classroom or on the field, he is respectful, hardworking, and uplifting to others. Even in years later, he is still making a point to stop by and catch up. It's been incredible to watch him grow from a motivated, good-natured middle schooler into the confident, well-rounded young man he is today. Micah is the kind of student teachers remember and feel lucky
to have. Micah comes from a proud Mayfield family. His grandparents, Jill and Kathy, are both Mayfield graduates. His mom, Andy, is a Mayfield graduate, and his brother Benjamin is a current sophomore here at MHS. Micah, you lead with character, you compete with heart, and you represent this school with class. We are incredibly proud of you. Congratulations, Micah, on this. Welldeserved recognition. Okay, guys. I think he's gonna he's he's a tall guy, so >> Lori, mom's here, too. >> Okay, we're gonna Come on up. Come on down. Got it. >> All right. And our next student to be honored this evening is senior Catrell Bowie and our director of innovation and consortium programming Diana will be introducing Catrell. MRS. Good evening it is my great privilege to honor Catrell Bowie for his growth character and contributions
to Makeup High School. Your control story is not just about accomplishments on a resume. It's about perseverance. It's about resilience. It's about what happens when a young person refuses to quit even when the path isn't easy. When Control came to Mayfield from Cleveland Heights, he was new. He didn't know anyone. And if we're being honest, he wasn't even sure if he wanted to be here. But instead of letting that define him, Catrell leaned in to the challenge. And over the last four years, he has grown into a confident, respected, and genuinely admired young man. One of Catrell's teachers, Mrs. Scapiti, your favorite, described his journey this way. When Catrell entered Mayfield, he was unsure about the school, his future, and who he was in the world. But over the past four years, she has watched
him grow into a young man who does everything with true heart. He does school with heart. He does athletics with heart. He interacts with teachers, teammates, and everyone around him with heart. He has taken on the learn and earn sport health management pathway with that same heart. And he has been the heart of the bridge to success program, a presence that will be deeply missed when he walks across that stage this spring. And that word heart really does describe Catrell perfectly. Catrell is a natural leader. He brings people together. He has an amazing personality, a winning smile, and a presence that makes others feel welcome. He is an incredibly proud human, and we are proud to have him. He's proud to have played for the Mayfield High School football team, and he should be. He
has represented his school with toughness, commitment, and character. Catrell is also quick to express gratitude. He is thankful for the teachers who support him all four years for his school and especially for his mom Andrea for believing in him and helping prepare him for the real world. Catrell, we are incredibly proud of how far you've come, of the young man you've become, and the example you've set for others. We're excited for you as you make a decision between Tiffen and Tryion University where you've earned athletic scholarships and plan to major in sports sciences. Congratulations Control Bowie on this welldeserved recognition. All right, we got to move forward. So we don't miss agree. All right, here we go. Nobody wants heat. Okay, so fun fact about control. Okay, we were going back and forth. We were
working on brag sheets. Students prepare something called a brag sheet. You know, they list their accomplishments. We were working on it. You know, he hit me up with an email about 11 at night. It's all good. I got it. Take one right back at 11:01. And we had just a couple things on the brag sheet. I'm going to tell I just want to give some words about control. He is a true leader. You make an impact. Your brag sheet should be a mile long. So, you be proud of every single thing you've done here. Proud of you. and you will be an impact in the future. Thank you for sharing them with us. APPRECIATE YOU on Monday. Not sure we'll have school between now and then, but all good. All right. Enough jokes. Enough jokes.
Um, okay. Well, good evening again. Uh, it's my great privilege to honor our next student, uh, 12th grader Rosanna Gabo. Rosanna, come on up. Let's give her a round of applause. Rosanna's being recognized for her truly remarkable achievements and contributions to Mayfield High School. Coming up, Rosanna. Uh Rosanna's story is nothing short of extraordinary. She speaks four languages. Uh Armenian, Russian, English, and even that was in what was the other one? Ukrainian. I was right. Okay. And Ukrainian for fun. And what makes it even more impressive is this. When Rosanna arrived at Mayfield High School uh just before 9th grade, she barely spoke any English. In just four years, she has transformed herself into the powerhouse we all know today. And she is not just a powerhouse at Mayfield. Rosanna has gained national recognition for
her work, most recently accepting a $20,000 grant for a for her AI powered robotic arm barista project presented at CES, the most powerful technology event in the world. Literally keynote speech Las Vegas what two weeks ago 20K for Rosan uh YES Rosanna resume is almost too long to read out loud and that's not an exaggeration she has interned with organizations like Bank of America Student Leaders Program University Hospitals the Greater Cleveland Partnership and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. She has presented projects in the US capital, founded clubs, led organizations, built software, and created tools designed to make systems more transparent, more fair, and more human. Her English teacher, Mrs. Dinger, said it best. Quote, "She is one of the most exceptional students I have ever had the opportunity to work with, and anyone who knows
Rosanna knows that is exactly right. But what truly sets her apart is not just how accomplished she is, it's how she does it. Rosanna carries herself with poise. wide confidence and incredible work ethic. She chooses projects that don't just impress people, but actually make the world better. She even spoke to our staff about how we can better support English language learners using her own journey to help others succeed. Rosanna recently accepted a full ride scholarship to Princeton University and plans to study computer science to develop innovative solutions to real world challenges. In other words, she's already doing exactly what she plans to keep doing. Rosanna is a true leader and I have no doubt that she will one day be leading her own company, shaping public policy or serving in a national or international leadership.
Rosanna Mayfield High School is incredibly proud of you. We're excited to welcome your mother Armenui Petroian, father Pikar Gaboan, and sister Anie, who's a proud MMS student tonight. Congratulations, Rosanna Gaboyan, on this very well-deserved recognition. NOW WE GOT SOME HANDS TO SHAKE. 100%. >> OH, I appreciate you. family. Come on up. Thank you. Congratulations. As I previously stated, we have two amazing staff members this evening. Uh at this uh point in the evening, would Mr. Steve Shyri please come to the podium. Let's give him a round of applause. It is my great privilege to recognize Mr. Shyrie for his outstanding contributions to Mayfield High School. Steve is joined tonight by his wife Rebecca, his daughter Haley, and his son Braden. And we are grateful to them for sharing Steve with us for 21 years of
extraordinary service to our school and our students. Steve is quite simply a rockstar mathematics teacher. He currently teaches AP Calculus AB and honors pre-calculus and serves as our as Mayfield High School's mathematics department chair. a role he does not merely hold but truly excels in. Steve brings 99 solutions to every single problem that presents itself. It's a math thing. He leads with clarity, integrity, and a deep sense of ownership. And he's built a department defined by strong camaraderie, professionalism, and a shared commitment to excellence. But what truly sets Steve apart is not just his leadership or his content knowledge. It is who he is as a teacher and a colleague. Steve cares deeply about students. He genuinely loves teaching and every single day he gives students the very best of himself. Steve's fellow calculus teacher
and department colleague Salano put it this way. Steve truly cares about everyone he works with. He always makes times for teachers and students, listens patiently, helps problem solve when challenges arise and regularly checks in on his department, not because he has to, but because he genuinely cares. He wants what is best for students and he leads with high expectations and clear goals. On a personal note, Steve also teaches my son Benjamin an pre-calculus and has the important responsibility of gently reminding him that Ben might be even more successful if he actually does the practice problems. And of course, Steve is right. Ben Ben disagrees. In all seriousness, I am deeply deeply grateful uh to Steve for his leadership, his heart for students and ability to lead one of our largest and strongest departments with both
excellence and humility. Steve, thank you everything you do. Thank you for everything you do for Mode High School. Congratulations, Mr. Steve Shri, on this well-deserved honor. There we go. >> Talk about Our next and last honory this evening is Mrs. Jenna Yola. Mrs. Yola, come on up. PLEASE STAND forward this opportunity. She has told me about it about 17 times. It's my great privilege to recognize Mrs. Zola for her outstanding contributions to Mayfield High School. Simply put, Mayfield High School could not run without Mrs. Zola. Her role as principal secretary is not just important, it is absolutely essential to the daily functioning of our building. When Mrs. Zola stepped into this role, I knew very early on that she meant business. Her professionalism, efficiency, and attention to detail are unmatched. She plays a central role
in keeping Mayfield High School running smoothly every single day. And she does it with calm, precision, and an incredible work ethic. Mrs. Yola's job is not just busy, it is non-stop. She coordinates substitute teachers and pair of professionals, supports both me and our assistant principal in charge of curriculum, manages extremely full schedules, and somehow still keeps the entire building running smoothly and centered on matter on what matters most, our students. If something needs done, Mrs. Zola already did it. If something is about to become a problem, she's already prevented it. And if something falls through the cracks, she is already fixing it before anyone even realizes there was an issue. One of her colleagues in our school counseling department, chair Hannah Gracia, put it perfectly. Jenna is one of the most dedicated and hardworking professionals
I know. I have great respect for her both professionally and personally, and I'm fortunate to consider her a close colleague and friend. She is widely admired and plays an essential role in keeping our school running smoothly. I couldn't say it better myself. When I asked what she wanted uh mentioned tonight, again, she was disappointed that she was being honored. Jenna said she did not want much except that she truly loves working at the high school and supporting our administrative team, staff, and students. She and her husband Dan are both proud Mayfield graduates. Dan from 1998 and Jenna from 2002. And their children attend school right here in our district. And most importantly, she asked for a shout out to her kids because in her words, there's nothing more she is proud of. Luca, Olivia, and
Romina are not only outstanding Wildcat athletes and competitors, but also excellent students. Luca and Olivia attend Mayfield Middle School, and Romina is at Milidge. Luca plays baseball and basketball. Olivia competes in dance and Roina competes in cheer. They truly are wonderful examples of what it means to be a Wildcat. Mrs. Zola, thank you for everything you do for this school, for our staff, for our students. Bwood High School is better because of you. Congratulations, Mrs. Zola on this very well-deserved honor. Oops. Forgive me for a moment. All right, we got a two-minute video uh put together by our VMP some high school highlights. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy. Sorry about that. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. How do you go from zero experience to flying one of the world's largest airlines? Let's
find out as we go behind the scenes at ATP. >> Turn it off. All good. Um, thank you Mr. Lynn. Um, students, congratulations. Awesome students. You guys amazing just listening to what you guys are doing. I don't know what I was doing in senior in high school. I know I wasn't learning four languages or robotic arms or anything like that. So, uh, congratulations on all that. You guys are fabulous. Parents, thank you for sharing them with us and congratulations on your students. It's wonderful. staff, thank you uh for what you do uh who are recognized tonight and the staff that is here. Thank you for everything that you do for our students, for our schools. Really appreciate it. Uh I did forget uh that Dr. Barnes sends his regards. He was lucky enough to get
picked for jury duty and he got on to a case. So he was uh not going to be able to make the meeting tonight. So we have Mr. Lean here with us. So if you notice that he wasn't here, uh that's why. Uh and at this point, if you have anything you need to go do, we're going to get into business in about five minutes. So, if you need to go, you're free to go. Thank you for coming tonight. >> All right, and we're back. Let's go. Community communications. We had nobody uh contact us ahead of time and nobody tonight. >> So, we will move on to president's announcements. Uh, one announcement I wish I would have done when everybody was here. I wanted to uh thank our um our maintenance, our custodial staff, our
grounds crew uh for getting these schools together with all the snow. I mean, if you think about all the parking lots, the walkways uh that they have to clean and be ready, and I was able to drive around a few of the buildings today, they were in great shape. So, I know they did a lot of work these last couple weeks. So, I appreciate everything that that staff has done. Uh and then the bus drivers getting out there. I'm sure they had a lot of cleaning off the buses to do uh to get ready for today and to be safe and get our kids back and forth to school. So that's it for me. I just appreciate all their hard work uh for those uh employers and then we'll move on to superintendent announcements. >>
Um so I have a announcement from uh Dr. Barnes. Uh he uh he states, "I'd like to take a moment to recognize that January is board appreciate appreciation month. On behalf of our school community, I want to sincerely thank our board um for all the time, care, and commitment you give to our students, to our staff, and families. Your work often happens behind the scenes um in long meetings, thoughtful discussions, and difficult decisions. But its impact is felt every day in our classrooms and hallways. We truly appreciate your willingness to serve, to listen, and to lead with the best interest of our students at heart. Thank you for our for your dedication, your partnership, and the many hours you give to support our school and our community. We are grateful for each of you. >>
Thank you for that. And um yeah, I extend my same uh regards to this this board. Uh it's a great board. Uh it's great working with the administration and the staff here. Uh it's a great district and you know just let's keep it rolling. Everything's going great. So thank you everybody. >> That moves us on the superintendent's consent agenda items A through O. Can I have a motion for approval? >> Move. >> Second. >> Roll call. >> I am everybody. So second roll call. Miss B. Motion for approval. >> So, move. >> Second.
>> I just want to mention that um if when you look through that had a nice discussion with Lancart helping me out and answer some questions that we had. Um if you look anything that was changed will have new by it. So you'll see any new courses that were added in there. Uh I think the only thing that was uh changed uh was removed was algebra sorry pre-cal honors honors precal that was the only thing that was removed because they made AP pre-calculus uh AB and BC now uh for the students instead of the honors. So uh that was a big change. Uh they also added applied algebra uh and then in the social studies section they added psychology 2 uh to the course and oh and learn and earn was added again was added
now for the first time into the course study. I think I got everything right. I just want to make sure everybody was aware. I had a discussion with another board member. So I just want to make sure everybody was aware of those changes. So roll call. >> Miss Green. >> Yes. >> MC. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hess. So move. >> Second. >> Roll call. >> M. >> Yes. >> M. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hus. >> Yes. >> Mr. Pressy. >> Yes. >> And Mr. >> Yes. Item D, agenda number one, our current budget year plus three years of projections, which is formally our five-year forecast. Motion for approval. >> So moved. >> Second. >> U Mr. Snider, you want to touch on some points on this? >> Yeah, I I would. Um what we're recommending this
evening is uh and I mentioned this in the the weekly update is we're going to refile the September forecast. Um, House Bill 96 changed the filing deadlines. So, the second filing would normally be in May. At this juncture, we have not collected um the tax receipts for the year, meaning we've not collected first half 25 tax 25 um first quarter or first 6 months of 26 collections, which means there's not enough information to make any substantive changes. That's about 90% of our operating revenue. until we really have a firmer understanding and recognize whether the projections from September have modified and refile. We did include an appendix however and it's um included to the attachment where we identified our three established risk corridors economic, legislative and cash flow and kind of provided some commentary among those
three risk orders. So I just would highlight a couple of those sections and then entertain any questions you might have them. So in the economic category the the the items to note is progressive insurance uh as was reported in Cleveland cranes magazine they had a class their campus one property up for auction beginning bid at 2 million that property was valued at I believe was 86 million it represented about $1.2 $2 million of annual tax revenue to the district. Obviously, we're watching it very closely. It's going to take a very unique fire because that campus is very special. It's a corporate office part. The whole office uh office space market has been uh hit pretty hard because of just the aspects changes of of co we're due to co working from working from home contracting
um one's footprint. So, we're going to continue to watch that and talk. We we're anticipating some reduction in tax revenue, but the hope is that there will be subsequent buyer and the tax rates will at least the level will be consistent with what we've got currently pegged at, but we're again watching very closely. Um, the other thing that we're watching is the uh property valuation complaints in that space. We're seeing a lot of valuation challenges because of the um very large increases due to reappraisal. uh while there is a a limit on additional revenue or loss revenue because of House Bill 920, the timing and the way in which that gets adjudicated down in Columbus could have a negative impact on us. So again, we're watching that very closely. When it comes to things like
legislation, wow, it was a busy legislative season after House Bill 196. I'm not going to mention all of the House bills, but um the largely Republican caucus in both chambers passed five House bills that had significant impact or have potential significant impact on the way properties are assessed and taxes are collected on school districts. Two of which have no immediate impact. So, I will mention those. The most impactful one to the district is where it caps growth on the inside millillage which we have five 5.2 mills. It can grow with inflation as properties appreciate about 800,000 to us last year is now capped at inflation. So if an 20% growth rate represents 800,000 is capped at 3% do the math. It's going to we're going to see a large reduction in that one category. So
that means it's just going to be more inward pressure on expenses. Apple put pressure on the next level request. We're not there. I don't want to be an alarmist. I'm just simply saying that a lot of legislative activity. So, we're going to be watching that very closely. And then finally, from a cash flow perspective, um you know, the delay delinquencies are up. So, that means there's going to be a suddenly downtick in collections current which means we have to monitor our cash flow. So, we continue to make our payrolls about 2.2 million twice a month or 4.4 collectively each month. So, just know that we are like a business. We have continued to mix cash flow on hand to pay uh current bills and we watch that map it out. We we're mapping out our
whole cash flow projections about 16 months and it maint 12 months. So again, uh we don't start back spending until 2029. We want to push that back as far as we can and we've been working very closely during our collective department processes to lock up those departments and expenses and kudos to the staff for being very understanding, very reasonable. And I think right now the the negotiations process we've agreed to thus far has really stabilized our expenses and hopefully will allow us to get to that 2030 and beyond the next uh next. Any questions if we didn't change a lot in the forecast other than the appendix and in some of the key rules are concern appreciate the update and you're watching a lot of these new parks that we're not sure what's something to
watch out >> there's always a lot to pay attention to very actively. Yeah, again appreciate the uh the uh ME MEA and the ESP and uh >> Smass for getting their contracts done. It was a big help for us to be able to get that done with all this uncert uncertainty to help you figure stuff out. So >> they appreciate that. >> Amen. >> Any other questions? >> Uh we need a roll call. >> M. >> Yes. >> M. >> Yes. Mr. H. >> Yes. >> Mr. Pessy, >> yes. Mr. >> Yes. >> And other no addendum uh E addendum donations. Motion for approval. >> So move. >> Second. >> Roll call. >> M. >> Yes. >> Mer. >> Yes. >> Mr. H. >> Yes. >> Mr. Pressy. >> Yes. >> Mr. F. >> Yes.
>> Other treasures business. Item A. minutes of the regular board meeting December 17, 2025.
