John's endless vision, drive, focus, and enthusiasm are foundational to his team success. And as one colleague fittingly said, we would be lost without him. John is without a doubt one of the hardest working teachers I've ever had the privilege to work with. His passion for math is matched by only by only by his relentless drive to help every student reach their full potential. A commitment that is evident from the first
day of school in August all the way through May. This positive energy extends beyond his lesson plans. John shows a sincere curiosity in each student's interest. So for our classified staff members, we didn't just pick one. We didn't just pick two, we picked three. Um the reason really being is the three of them are a package deal. And she has handled the jack of all trades nature of the role with incredible grace and tenacity. Jen's impact has been immediate and profound. Her colleagues universally praise her as a quick learner who is so organized and on top of everything. She is celebrated for her professionalism, positivity, and true team spirit. We are so grateful to have
her on our team. Are you ready? So at Ma Middle School, we have our schoolwide expectations. respect, responsibility, right attitude and risk-taking. Last year, Mr. Lean charged all of the buildings to look at our schoolwide acknowledgement system. We started to ask ourselves, how are students motivated and how do they want to be raised? Many times in education, adults make the decision for kids. So, who better to ask but the students themselves. Have you guys ever met a middle school student? They're pretty opinionated. So, we started up the PBIS student advisory committee, which is a reflection of 40 students that mirrors the demographics of our building. These students went into home rooms and presented on the four Rs and truly had a voice in the way that students were going to be recognized. We surveyed the
entire student body. Our kids analyzed and two themes emerged. The theme of connection and free time. So kids want to be loved and they want to do what they want to do when they want to do it. Sounds pretty easy, right? Um so the team or the committee came together and they developed quarterly rewards and an end of the year reward um for kids to participate. Two years ago we had 24 positive referrals. Last year because of the efforts of this committee we went up to over 600. So when students were shown or exhibiting the four Rs, teachers would put in a positive referral, they would even call um call home or the administrator would call home. Again, students kept coming back to feeling connected and having that bridge between home and school. We were
featured on channel 19 news um for our committee. The clip that you're going to see is two students who participated part of the program, Lamar and Rose, and they're going to share their experience um that they had as part of the >> I think I'm going to talk to a couple students myself. >> Yeah, sure. Thank you. >> Thank you. We have two of the students here at Mayfield Middle School who are participants, but pretty heavy participants in this program, right? Uh Lamar and Rose, you guys were part of the um student advisory committee that was formed in this whole program, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, what did it mean to me to be nominated by your team to be a part of this? I mean, at first I didn't really like I didn't
really know what it meant and I was pretty surprised because I thought like things like this were for people that like were really smart and like in those really advanced classes and I just wasn't one of those students so I didn't know. You >> were surprised. >> Yeah. And then we had our first meeting. I didn't really speak much cuz I didn't know really and uh basically after a few meetings they brought up presentations and uh you know I feel like I was pretty good presenter. People told me I was present. You didn't tell it. You didn't know that you had, right? Maybe you're just a really good listener, too. Don't necessarily have to have good grades to be influential, to be a good listener. How about you, Bri? What did you um What did
you think when you were asked to be a part of this? >> Well, I was very excited at first, but then I got a little bit nervous cuz I didn't know what was like coming up. >> Yeah. >> And then when it started getting into the presenting and stuff, I was really happy because I love presenting in front of people. >> That's awesome. So, what did you learn um from the feedback that the students through the survey? What did you learn that your fellow students wanted to see happen when it came to rewards and recognition? I mean, I was really shocked by my class analytics because I thought that you know that we would have chosen some different options when we chose because one of our most choice option was food and drinks and in
class I always eat it. So, I thought that's something they would have chose but they really chose like free time with their friends like just you know time to do their own thing. that were understandable. >> Sure, little more freedom and options within the school. >> My sixth grade said that they wanted food and drinks, which wasn't really surprising. >> But the next thing that we figured out was that they don't like being announced on the announcement and our vice principal did that all the time. And once we figured out that they don't want it, we all were very surprised. So once this started to be implemented into the integrated into the school day, how did um your classmates respond? >> I mean they responded well. I guess I don't know if it was because
of like solely this committee or because we got deeper in the school year because we gave this around the end of the second quarter. >> So like they I don't know if they were working towards getting it third quarter or just doing or just changing up because you know it's getting deeper into school year more work test and stuff like that. >> How about you? Did you see people kind of striving to get those setting goals and things? >> I didn't actually. A couple of my friends uh they were really mean to me in fifth grade, but then since I was in the advisory committee, I told them about everything and they were like, "Oh, I want to do this. I want to be more kind. I want to be more caring. I want to
be I want to be better." >> That's wonderful. You saw that happening in in your daily school life. I love that. And you guys are influencers. How about that? >> Pretty cool. All right. If this is something you're interested in, you want to see more of this, maybe in a school that you work at or a school that your child attend, pbis.org. That's the website for you to check out. So, one question that Dr. Barnes is constantly asking the administrator is, "How do you know you're winning? How do we know we're winning? What do you use as your scoreboard?" Um, one of the reasons or one of the things I knew that we were winning by is I had students in the committee come up to me that really struggled to get to class or
get to school um or struggle with engagement in school and were asking me when the next meeting was. Is it next week? Is it coming up? So, something that they were looking uh forward. I'm happy to say the committee is still running full steam ahead. Every sixth and sixth and seventh grader that did it last year asked to be in it again. We gave them the option and all of them um wanted to continue to do it and we are plowing through and continuing on with our efforts. So, thank you for your time. >> Thank you, Mr. Laughlin. Um students, congratulations again. Thank you for being positive role models. Good work. uh to the staff. Thank you for everything that you do and uh we appreciate everything that you do. I'm going to call in
