Is there any discussion? Just wanted to share that this is for the assistant director position at our CARES building. Um, as many of you know, Christie Lapaglia, after many years, has uh decided to retire. And filling her role is our current assistant director, Brittany Majack. Um, we
approved her a couple months ago. Um, this is replacing Brittany. We're very happy to have Carly joining us in that role. She's going to be a great addition to that building and that team. Contingent on the board approving her reemployment after her retirement. The board has previously given public notice that Ms. Bowser will be retiring from her position as the Director of Student
Services and is seeking reemployment with the board in the same position after her retirement. Oh, I just wanted to confirm these are these updates are just according
to changes in the laws. Is that correct? Correct. Okay. Thank you. Mr. >> well, to clarify though, we did combine two policies into one too during the budget piece. Thank you. Please call the roll. Ms. Marchaza. Yes. Mr. Hardesty. Yes. Mr. Hay. Yes. Ms. Ayala. Yes. Ms. Cook. Yes. Motions carry 5-0. Next, we have the legislative report from Mr. Hardesty. Well, we're going to be pretty quick today because >> [sighs and gasps] >> they've we have a bunch of recesses. There's Easter and then the May elections coming up. Then they're going to come back into session, the House and the and the Senate for a little bit of time in June and then we're going to gear up for the fall elections. Uh summer break and then we have fall elections as well. So, we
don't have that many updates. There's a lot of bills in the works, but they really haven't gone anywhere. So, I want to give some updates on some bills that have been in for a while. Um House Bill 485 passed last November. Uh that's the Baby Olivia Act. It has two hearings in the Senate Ed Committee so far. So, it is matriculating. Um it now includes an op an opt-out. And it may have may in the future they're discussing whether or not there's going to be different videos to choose from. Um so, that's a new uh development that's being discussed. Um but like I said, it's passed the House last November and it's through its second hearing in the Ed Committee so far uh this year. And now we have the SB 156, which is the
Success Sequence Bill. So, it passed the Senate in October. It's had three hearings in the House Ed Committee. So, it is matriculating as well. Um this is mandating that um school public schools teach a particular order of success or how you students should live their life as they grow up. >> [laughter] >> Um like I said, that's matriculating. Feel how you want to feel about it. Um and then there's HB 561 about vaccines. It's had three hearings in the House Health Committee. It has not passed the House. But this will weaken the regulations surrounding vaccines in our schools. So, that's another one to keep an eye on. And then I will give more updates as they come along. All right. Thank you. Um we do not have a student achievement report. That will be quick
tonight as well. But we will be looking forward to that next next month and be prepared for a heavy one. >> Oh, yeah. Thank you. At this time, we have the Chief Financial Officer's report and recommendations. Mr. Wade. Mr. Lynch. He just likes it when I say his name. I'm convinced at this point. First one, there you go. Uh real quick, we are trending a little bit better than we were last month. We're looking at about a net potential trend of over our forecast by about $443,000. Um I I think a lot of that's going to be timing. I think when we by the time we get closer to June and we do our end of the year meeting in June, um I think we'll be right about there. But if you get $443,000 over
or $443,000 under are not you know, neither one is you different and as we've been striving to be as close as we possibly can, we're going to see the flip sides of each coin going forward. If Mr. Lynch would go to the next slide, um our revenue for the month is up $322,000. Again, inconsequential for us and our total revenue for the year is up $2 million and again, 1.7 of that is because of the advanced back in that we had from the end of last fiscal year. So, um trending pretty close to where we would expect to be. Uh moving along to the next slide, uh current year-to-date revenue uh as a whole compared to our forecast back in February is up about $227,000. Uh the majority of that coming in the form of
investment earnings still tracking higher than we had continued to project because the economy still continues to be uh a little bit more unstable than we have thought it was going to be with inflation being up. Uh again, our investments again, where we can only invest in very safe liquid um investments. So, we're talking municipality CDs, high interest savings accounts, uh commercial paper um are still trending pretty high. So, we're seeing pretty good returns still on those. So, we're we're trending up which is good for us. Um because our investments that we have to be in are safe, so they have higher interest rates. Looking at our expenses, our expenses for the month were up about $72,000. Not much discrepancy there. Uh expenses for the year are up almost $2 million with the majority of that
being in the form of salary and benefits, which is what we would expect based on our assumptions and our forecast and with our uh negotiated agreements. Um and if we go to our last slide to kind of summarize this here where we're at on expenses, again, we're up about $670,000 with about 300 of that coming in the form of supplies. Um and that's not atypical that we're projecting that we're running a little bit high, but we'll see that fall off because we closed purchasing for the district and most of our departments uh in early April um as we start to wrap up the year because we have to get all the credit cards back in. All of our POs need to be paid before everybody leaves for the summer. So, we start that process at
the beginning of April. Uh and when we budget, we budget that the money is spent this year's money spent on this year's kids. So, we should have pretty much all of our purchases wrapped up as we head into May, which is the last month of the school year. Um so, things are really starting to slow down on a spending level. So, um nothing out of the ordinary there. But um if you look at kind of where we're at, we're within 0.2% for our total salaries, which is about $70 million as we all know on our budget. We're within uh 0.4% on health care. And again, supplies and are up a little bit and tuition's up a little bit. Um but we think that those are going to kind of stay steady moving forward. Happy to
answer any questions. Thank you. Are there any questions? Great. Madam President, members of the board, Mr. Heath, uh I'd ask the board to consider items B through F in one motion, please. So moved. Second. Any further discussion? Please call the roll. Ms. Ayala. Yes. Ms. Marchaza. Yes. Mr. Hay. Yes. Mr. Hardesty. Yes. Ms. Cook. Yes. Motions carry 5-0. We do not have any unfinished business this evening, so we will move on to new business. And under new business, we have a discussion on district-wide professional development training and our subscription discussion. And Mrs. Ayala, would you like to start us off here? Yeah. So, um unfortunately, anybody seeing hearing us can't see what we were seeing, but just to catch everybody up, we um as always, I think all of us are looking for ways that
we can Um I'm sorry. I'm just sitting as close as I possibly can. Um you know, we're always looking for ways. Last month, I was asking about shared services. I think we're all trying to um be creative, I guess. Um so, I had asked for some information. You know, we talk about expenditures, we don't always have a great idea of what that looks like. And so, I asked um Mr. Wade and his team to come up with all the numbers for us and and itemize things. So, I want to thank you and your team for turning that around so quickly. Um I really appreciate that. And it you know, when we're making decisions up here, it's difficult when we don't you know, we look at um you know, numbers and we don't always know what
that actually is you know, translated into. So, that was nice to see that. Um I was a little bit I don't know how everybody else felt, but I was a little bit shocked by especially for um the amount spent in professional development. Um I understand that that's pretty typical in public education. Um but you know, it did you know, now that we're at a time where we can't look at things as you know, in a perfect world, um our spending is pretty on point I think with what public educ- other districts are doing in public education, but I think now because we're in trouble and we're asking for money, um we have to kind of look at things and say what can we do without. So, um I just looking at that, I feel like
even more so than I did before. I think there's more ways that we can get creative to you know, make cuts so that we can show the community we're cutting our you know, we're tightening our belts as as the way same way that we're asking them to do. Um I don't know if anybody else had any any thoughts any or anything from looking at this data. Yeah, I think the only thing I would share with the group is you know, we we and I think that was part of the original question to Ms. Ayapolo was you know, can you share with us you know, what what's required, what's not and and kind of what each of those those PD sessions really entails. And you know, we tried to lay that out. Obviously, there's a lot
of things that are either a state requirement or a federal requirement that uh we've got on our professional development list. So, um we have spelled that out a little bit. Um our hope is that over the next couple of years, once especially our science of reading, our Wit & Wisdom, uh our 95 Phonics, and then our with the math uh piece is coming up with uh Open Up Math. Um since we've been implementing some of those things that uh those PD costs will continue to come down because we've spent so much over the last couple of years getting those things ramped up as part of those state requirements. We're very hopeful that Open Up Math will uh be on that uh state approved list since we've already gone through all of that professional development. And
that puts us a little bit ahead of the game as we get into that next phase um coming out of the state house with with some of the math requirements that we have. So, um we're we're hopeful that because of our planning and uh doing things um a little bit maybe ahead of time that uh those things will continue to drop off a little bit and you won't see quite as much uh as we have right now. Um I think the one thing that will be added into the mix next year um based on uh what we'll present at our curriculum liaison meeting in May will be some middle school ELA components. Um again, to help us align with science of reading, but also to to really align our programs K through 8 uh from
an ELA standpoint. So, um working on the final touches with that and we'll have that for the board's consideration um at that liaison meeting in May. And then more than likely on the board agenda in June. Uh so, there will be some PD costs for that. Um but we'll see some of the other things start to drop off a little bit as well. Um the other thing I'll mention is we're we're looking very closely at the uh the way we do some of our professional development um and and making sure that we're very uh cognizant of some of the costs associated with that as well. Um some of the things that we're trying to do now uh also is look at aligning some of our uh planning time across the district. Um as uh Mr.
Lynch has been working through our related arts schedule here for next year, that's one of the things he's been trying to do with the principals is align some things so that we can have groups of teachers at specific grade levels available at the same time across the district where instead of you know, taking a full day uh or a half day off and having them come over here to Paradigm and do some of that work, we might be able to do some uh some Google Meet uh meetings and do some of that while they're still back in their buildings for that period of time that we have related arts. Um so, that planning time can be used efficiently as well. Um so, we're we're trying to look at some things creatively from a structure and
a uh a scheduling standpoint, too. Um I know the other item that we were looking closely at as well was uh the subscriptions. And I believe uh Mr. Wade included a quite a few of those things on there as well. Um as we've been looking at those budget reductions for uh for next year and for the the coming years as part of that 10 10 million dollar reduction plan that uh we have over the span of that 5-year forecast, um our curriculum department started back in the fall to identify some of those things that um maybe extras or maybe nice-to-haves. Um maybe some things that we've been utilizing in the district that we've been utilizing in the district over uh the last few years. Maybe that does not have um uh the usage maybe that
it once had. Um and they've made some uh some uh difficult decisions to cut some things. Uh we shared that uh information out with our our staff members here recently. Uh I believe we included that in one of our board updates, too. Um but there are probably about 1 2 3 4 probably 10 to 12 uh items that uh we are not redu- renewing subscriptions with uh for next year um just based on on some of those evaluations that we've done. Uh don't have a total dollar figure attached to that yet, but that would be part of uh uh Mrs. Bonnis's um department budget reductions that we have in place. Uh we gave them a a specific percentage of their budget that they needed to reduce. And that uh that started back in the fall
and uh we wrapped that up here recently so that uh she can have that budget reduction done for her department. Yeah, that was um I'm glad to see and I wonder if there's even more redundancy in some of these. Um especially you know, again, I don't pretend to know. So, I just was looking at through the spreadsheet that is there any redundancy in our security um software stuff? Some of them were pretty high and I wonder if they cover you know, some of the services overlap and there's any way you know, to just to reduce those. And I and you know, professional development is important and it's beneficial and it's useful. And I certainly don't want it to sound like I don't think that. But when we're in this position that we're in, I think
what can we cut that you know, our teachers are very capable. Um most have their masters, correct? You know, so if if we have to get you know, mit- lose something, I feel like rather than losing a teacher or losing any services for students, maybe that's the best one to go. So, um again, thank you Mr. Wade and your team for being so accommodating. All right, thank you. Next, we have hearing of the public on any topic. Mr. Wade. First speaker is Alex Fish. Thank you, Mr. Fish. Our next speaker is Ms. Mazika. Both passed. That concludes our public participation for the evening. All right. We do have an executive session on the agenda this evening to consider the employment, compensation, discipline, etc. of a public employee. And when we reconvene, we will adjourn the
meeting. Do I have a motion to convene to executive session? So moved. Second. Call the roll. Ms. Ayapolo. Yes. Ms. Marchant. Yes. Mr. Haig. Yes. Mr. Hardesty. Yes. Ms. Cook. Yes. We're now in executive session at 6:37 p.m.
