foreign don't know do you want something do you want mine I have an extra yeah I'm sorry good evening the January 10 2023 organizational meeting of the board of education is called to order this meeting is being held in accordance with section 3313.14 of the Ohio Revised Code Mr Wade please call the roll miss breiner here Miss Cook here miss wrestling present Miss Payne here Mr Tuttle here please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God and indivisible with liberty and justice for all at this time we have the nomination and election of the president do I have any nominations Mr Wade please call the roll uh Miss Briner yes Miss Cook he
he's dressling yes yes Spain yes Mr turtle yes Mr Tuttle has appointed the presidents for the board of education for the 2023 calendar year thank you Mr Wade now we have the nomination and election of the vice president do I have any nominations I nominate Maggie cook second please call the roll Mr Wade uh Miss breiner Ms jessling yes Miss Cook yes Miss Payne yes Mr Tuttle yes Ms cook has been nominated and voted in as vice president of the board of education for 2023. thank you congratulations Mrs Goodson thank you congratulations yourself next we have the board representative appointments do I have a volunteer for OSB legislative liaison I'll do it Mary breiner thank you this appointment no vote is necessary OSB student achievement liaison I would be happy to continue that I I
enjoy it thank you no votes necessary representative Mentor Schools Foundation do we have it I'd love to continue in that capacity thank you appointment thank you appreciate that now we have police and time for regular Board of Education meetings do I have a motion some of would you like me to read that to the record or okay Mr Wade please call the roll Ms breiner yes yes Miss Payne yes Miss Cook yes Miss dressling yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries five zero thank you finally we have approval of gend items 9 through 27. do I have any discussion before the motion on any one of those I do I have discussion on nine the membership to the Ohio school boards Association so I'm struggling with this um and the reason why I'm struggling is because
it is a 501c4 organization which means that it's not a 501c3 which is a charity it is um an organization that has lobbying efforts and they can actually politically back candidates um so that's I guess my struggle is I don't mind the courses even if I don't agree with some of the courses I have no problem if anybody wants to go to training I think they have a vast array of different courses that they offer on the entire political Spectrum we could say so my issue is not with that I am surprised that our membership doesn't include training automatically so regardless of our membership we still have to pay a fee for our courses that we attend so the the question that I kind of was asking and I know Mr Heath um you provided
this paper for me with what what our membership does include and I guess I'm not I'm not certain that the amount of ten thousand dollars is worth it for the membership and the things that we are offered uh especially with that 501c4 status and their lobbying efforts I just feel like there is a perception in the community that we've all talked about before where people think that we are pushing political ideology or we stand with one side politically and I think that only furthers that perception out there that if we decide to use taxpayer money to support an organization's lobbying efforts at the state and federal level so that's I guess what I'm just struggling with I would be happy to hear you know from you guys if you feel that it would be a
wise decision to use taxpayer dollars to put towards political lobbying efforts well the legislative platform that was introduced and that we reviewed at our special work session is an amalgum of the viewpoints of dozens and dozens of districts across the state of Ohio and that gives direction to those lobbying efforts for osba to port maybe a particular initiative or to share concerns about another and so from my standpoint and given the fact that we had very successful experience in our superintendent search and our Treasurer search utilizing their services not that we couldn't use them anyway so I'm not I don't think that it's necessarily contingent on that but I I do think that they've proven themselves to be an excellent partner porting best practices for us as a board there have been times that I've
taken advantage of free you know free little seminars of webcast kinds of things in their Publications to us so in general I think that our investment in that organization helps it to continue to exist and if they didn't have the support of lots of districts across the state we wouldn't have that quality perhaps so I'm in favor of continuing a relationship with them and we've been a member as long as I'm aware you know our membership in osba goes back a long time just because of that's not a reason to continue but I think that in general their their support their work their Publications their legal feedback on various things that come up ads value to us as a board and our ability to govern thoughtfully thank you I mean you definitely bring up some
good points and I wouldn't disregard all those points my issue truly is just the political aspect of it the the lobbying um just because I feel like the delegate assembly is great but only one person from each board represents the board you know and we have different we all here have different views so do our community members so um that's the part that I just struggle with and I don't know that I can get behind that with given the perception that is out there in the community I don't want to necessarily add to that um perception so I can appreciate that Viewpoint I mean I I just want a dad that I also value their their expertise that they've had when I've had questions they've always been willing to answer so it's it's a nice
piece to fall back on their Publications I find very valuable you know also the searches that we've done but you know to your point we could have used them either way um the trainings that we've had I thought were were very important to your point with the lobbying um I I understand you know where some people might have concerns with that the legislative the the way that the lobbyists received their you know kind of marching orders to lobby and and What legislation to lobby for or against is done at that legislative platform you know that's a vote of so many different schools and it's all on people that are that are entrusted with their communities to fight for public education and you know we all took an oath to fight for public education here and
and I'm hopeful that the people that are that are there and that are lobbying our our lobbying for public education causes I I don't have a problem with any of their legislative platforms so it's for me I I feel that it's something that I want I want them to lobby for public education I can appreciate that I think sitting in the delegate assembly and listening to the debate that lasted I don't know Mr Tuttle maybe four hours on parental rights and ultimately probably about 85 percent of the delegates there turned it down you know did not support the parental rights platform so there have been you know um there's there's a pretty good awareness now that that was turned down you pretty universally I mean it wasn't very well supported during the delegate assembly so
parents you know do have a concern that hey you're using my taxpayer dollars and basically you're using my taxpayer dollars against me because they're not supporting parents and and their rights so it's it's the lobbying issue that I have uh uh I guess the lobbying platform that I do have an issue with and it doesn't help that the parental rights platform did fail um at that meeting so I think had that have passed maybe it would be a little little bit easier for me to support but I do know there have been community members that have brought that to my attention you know and and they don't appreciate their dollars going towards something when that organization is not necessarily supporting them with their lobbying efforts um so that's just I mean I guess that's where
I'm coming from I wanted to explain it and talk it through I do think they have some really good things that they offer I've taken advantage of their training several times I was just surprised that it wasn't included with the membership automatically so we still do have to pay out of pocket for that but it was very helpful I have taken you know the new board member training I've taken their training for financial 101 to understand the finances and the whole aspect of the cup reports and things like that which were helpful I just can't I feel like it's not right I I don't believe it's right to support an organization with our taxpayer dollars at Lobby and are seen as political that's all everybody's looking to me I have that same sentiment regarding our
taxpayer dollars going towards a lobbyist organization our politicians all get their donations from their own personal coffers or but we're talking taxpayer dollars going towards something that not everybody supports in their lobbyists paid to Lobby on the behalf of SBA I I too the rest of everything else with the association is all good but when they take our taxpayer dollars and for that that's that's the horse of a different color let's take a vote on item number nine individually if we may please Mr Wade please call the roll I have to have a motion in a second so move second call the roll Mr Wade Miss breiner yes Ms dressling yes Miss Cook yes Miss Payne no Mr Tuttle no item nine carries vote three two the remaining items on the list 10 through 27

Board appreciation month we know how much time and effort goes into all of your roles here in the district uh we're very grateful that you are dedicated uh to the 7 000 students we serve here in Mentor uh in my recommendations this evening there are several items that I want to comment on prior to our consent agenda first I want to thank Barb bonus Larry Luciano and Jason Crowe for their work on the high school course of study uh updates we were able to meet with Miss Payne and miss jessalyn last week to share the details of each course and to review the logistics behind some of those changes we're very excited about those opportunities that those courses will provide our students second we're looking forward to evaluating the results of an updated enrollment study
that we hope to conduct conduct with the future think here in a couple of weeks we do have that um invoice and contract on the agenda here this evening with the shifting enrollments due to the pandemic and the in a couple of new developments that we have here in the city the information that they will provide will be invaluable as we enter our staff in conversations here this spring uh and finally you're going to see a number of retirements on the agenda from both our teaching ranks and our classified staff due to their participation in the early Severance program these individuals have an unbelievable amount of institution institutional knowledge that they're going to be taking with them into their next phases of life we are certainly grateful for their many years of service to our
district and we want to thank them for their work with our students throughout their careers so Mr President members of the board Mr Wade I have the following recommendations listed under the consent agenda and recommend approval of items six a one through six A4 so moved second any discussion hearing them please call the roll Mr Wade Mr jessling yes Miss Payne yes Miss printer yes Miss Cook yes Mr Tuttle yes motions carry 5-0 Mr President members of the board and Mr Wade I am recommending approval of the Mentor High School course of study updates so moved second please call the roll Mr Wade can we have discussion no excuse me that's okay now I just have a couple Kudos um I'm just going to Echo Mr Heath I think that Miss jesling and I have
been included in the curriculum liaison position just within the last year that we kind of created within the board and it has been a really nice process I think that the new process that has been put out to notify any parents of any changes that could be coming down the pipeline or that would be voted on I think that's a really great process and it was utilized for this recommendation of these new courses I'm thrilled about the entrepreneur course I think that's great and it's a great addition to our CTE program which is very vast it's an awesome program so yeah I just wanted to give a kudos to that I think it's it's wonderful and I'm looking forward to the additional liaison meetings that we have to address achievement gaps and things like that
as well and I'm thrilled that we are having those discussions couldn't agree more and one of the things that you note when you're sitting with that whole team of people who contribute to those final recommendations that come before us is the amount of hard work thought collaborative discussion it's it's a very intense process and we're seeing just that culminating piece of their best recommendations based on Research finances there's there's just a lot of moving parts and it gives you an even greater respect for what Mr Heath the admin team Mr Crowe in this case Mr glavin or Dr glavin because there's you can't move one thing without impacting a dozen others you know it's like those little those little puzzles we used to have where you tried Michael or even a Rubik's Cube maybe that's
even a better example so I appreciate that and being a part of um hearing those presentations and recommendations is really an honor the couple other comments on the future think enrollment study I just wanted to verify it was 2019 was the last enrollment study that we did and we all know covet hit so that enrollment study was probably very different I know we said it was on the low end of what they predicted was low I guess um it was different about 200 students yeah yeah so um I think it is time for an enrollment study I looked over the contract and I and I noticed that we are looking at private schools I know Mr Heath I um talked with you about this so I just want to reiterate it uh the private schools
and the enrollment of the private schools because we have seen a a difference there as well over the last few years and covid could have had something to do with it as well as homeschooling and while homeschooling is still a very low number in general compared to our population of seven thousand I think it's still a good perspective to look into that as well so the contract didn't mention homeschooling and I know in 2000 the ode data that I pulled from 2020 to 2021 there was a 55 increase which is pretty large across the state of Ohio so I would be interested even though it's still a low number to see if we can get projections on that as well because I know we still have it's like around 200 or so now that our
homeschoolers which is still a small number but I was wondering if we could include that in the projections with future things absolutely okay and that was one of the things that Mr Wade and I talked to Tracy Healy from future think during our meeting last week and that was one of the things that we had mentioned too is you know just looking at those numbers we do have some of those numbers over the last three years that we've been using for comparison purposes right now but those are some things that we want to make sure are part of that conversation and part of their their evaluation as we go through this process because that's going to be very important information for us to see and I was wondering too I guess on the same it's
not necessarily I guess linked with the enrollment study but if we have an enrollment study and then we also see that the data is the same do we ask or send out some kind of survey to the people who do leave and stay within our district but go private schooling or to homeschooling and just kind of understand the why it could be something that's completely out of our control but it would be interesting to see the data behind that jump and to know the why behind the data is would be interesting something that we can look into definitely thanks any other discussion and the remaining three and four I'll ask for votes on those in a second okay yeah you're gonna put on those individually correct yes okay let's vote on the first one Miss
Cook yes Miss Pryor yes Miss Payne yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries to prove the courses of study 5-0 uh Mr President members of the board and Mr Wade I'm recommending approval of the future think enrollment study proposal so moved second please call the roll Mr Wade Miss Payne yes Miss jessalyn yes Miss breiner yes Miss Cook yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries 5-0 Mr President members of the board and Mr Wade I am recommending approval of the Lakeland College Credit Plus partner agreement second discussion Mr Wade please call the roll MS breiner yes Miss dressling yes Ms cook yes Miss Payne yes Mr total yes motion carries 5-0 Mr President members of the board Mr Wade I am recommending approval of these Spectrum Enterprise service order second discussion Mr Wade please call the roll
Miss Pryor yes Miss Cook yes Miss dressling yes Miss Payne yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries 5-0 Mr President members of the board Mr Wade I am recommending approval of agenda item C1 related to certified personnel and C2 through C4 all related to human resource matters discussion so many people you know on this and I didn't know along the same lines of the survey I think it's really valuable to sit down and have like an exit survey or an exit interview from an HR perspective because these are people who have been with us for a long time and their their input is really valuable and they could let us know what we've been doing good what what we could do better so I would like to see if we could do something like that I
think it would be helpful and beneficial to gain knowledge we do we do Mrs Burnett meets with everybody who either retires or resigns throughout whether it's at the end of the year or throughout the year yep great awesome thank you Mr Wade please call the roll uh Miss dressling yes Miss Cook yes Miss Reiner yes Miss Payne yes Mr Tuttle yes Mr President members of the board Mr Wade I am recommending approval of agenda item D that was added to the agenda at the beginning of our meeting which is also related to human resource matters so move second was that Miss Briner yeah thank you discussion Mr Wade please call the roll Miss breiner yes Miss jesling yes Miss Cook yes Miss Payne yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries five zero this concludes my portion

school graduates on December 22nd our high school men and women's wrestling teams hosted pin for a purpose at the Manor Fine Arts Center it was a great show if you've never been able to watch wrestling in a comfy seat this was one and Mr Heath and I really enjoyed it proceeds for this event helped support three people battling cancer in our community including a current teacher a sophomore at Mentor High School and a 2016 Mentor High School alumni and former wrestler our wrestling teams battled on the mat while baskets were raffled in t-shirts and bracelets were sold and pinned for a purpose raised five thousand five hundred dollars great job [Applause] this weekend our high school speech and debate team competed and congratulations to Caitlin Wong our tournament champ in informative speaking Caitlin also earned
her fourth bid and has qualified for the state speech and debate tournament Doug slivinski earned a fifth place finish in dramatic interpretation and the team also awarded their own cardinal Achievement Award to Sydney vitalik congratulations Cardinals recently our men are fire EMT Academy was in the news I hope everyone had a chance to see that it was on spectrum and in the newspaper and our Career Training Program partnership has been in effect since 2020 with the city of Mentor it combines classroom and laboratory activities to provide students with a foundation in a career as a firefighter EMT or an EMS dispatcher the Academy's inaugural class graduated in June of 2022 and one student is already engaged in new hire training with the mentor Fire Department Manor fire chief Robert surro stated that some of our
best firefighters are men are graduates and that he looks forward to continuing that tradition well into the future and uh I think we do too so keep up the great work Cardinals and I hope to see your picture on the screen soon thanks thank you Mrs cook next we have the chief financial officers report recommendations Mr Wade Mr President members of the board Mr Heath thank you wait for Mr Lynch to get that get to the beginning there thank you Mr Lynch um so we are presenting our December Financial update we are halfway through our fiscal year at this point so we've concluded six of uh 12 months of the fiscal year again because remember our fiscal year starts on July 1st and does not align to the calendar year so just as a reminder
um right now we're projecting revenues to come in about 254 000 higher than projected in our November forecast and our expenses are coming in um 107 302 dollars less than we would predicted in that forecast as well so we we continue to refine our forecasting to be as close as we possibly can to our forecast with the help of our analytic system um at the request of our business advisory excuse me citizens financial advisors her business advisory so I got that in my head but citizens Financial advisory uh always challenges the CFO prior to myself and to me to be as close as possible so that when we're looking at our five-year forecast that we're making as accurate as decisions based on that information and we're trying to be relatively accurate on that with that
we're looking at an operation operating deficit this year of 17 million three hundred and thirty one thousand nine hundred sixty one dollars uh revenues this year are trending uh pretty close to what we had last year at this time only a difference of 155 000 and a lot of that comes down to timing and our investment income being higher than um we were last year at this time because interest rates as they've went up for us helps us because we're in safe Investments so typically when interest rates are going up for the rest of the community not necessarily a good thing but from Investments that the district has to make that causes our rates to go up and we're seeing higher than uh almost you know three and a half four percent and sometimes and
some of our investments and our interest rates that we're receiving were prior to when I first got here we were seeing less than one percent so um that's helping us with our investment income uh going up as I've mentioned before um overall our income for the year is up uh 2.7 million dollars and again that kind of goes back to what we've been seeing with regards to Investments and increases in state revenue of account for about a million of that mostly in the form of restricted and restricted funds and our local tax reimbursements coming in about 700 000 more as well so as we've said we're seeing about a 254 000 uh positive to what we were projecting in November and again as I've mentioned a number of times that most of that comes from
uh the advanced in that we had to do for the correction for the money that we fronted our uh State revenues uh for uh grants and things like that that we didn't have at the end of last fiscal year if remember we had to advance that out so that money was returned once that cash came in from the state to cover those expenses so um if you take that 223 000 out we're trying to notice exactly where we're projecting on our forecast which is extremely close [Laughter] sometimes closer than I wanted to be um moving along to our expenses again trending about where we expected from an expense standpoint and we're about 449 thousand dollars uh up from last year at this time again most of that comes down and we look at where we're
at this year comparison to last year so really it's the yellow box at the bottom that really matters that 10.8 million dollars if we look at our expenses last year to this year that seems like a huge jump but again I'll remind everybody that comes from the amount of money that we transferred out of the general fund into our capital reserve fund to fund the next three years of capital projects because we are for all intents and purposes subsidizing improvements and maintenance of our facilities out of the general fund in an underfunded permanent Improvement Levy so if you take that 14 million dollars out and then you know we transferred about four million dollars we're actually pretty even that 10 million if you were to you know take that the difference between what we transferred
out last year into the capital fund versus the 14 million that we transferred out this year that's about 11 million dollars different so that means our expenses are about the same as they were last year um which goes back to some of the cuts that we made uh in this year's budget as well as some of the under spending that we're seeing uh and some of that could be timing too you know so I don't think we you know should Pat ourselves too much on the back at this point because we still have six months left to to flow out but I think it's important to point out to the community that All Things Considered we're about where we were last year as we've seen seven to eight percent inflation rates across the countries we're
all very well aware um there's things that we can't control when it comes to inflation uh and some of that goes back to uh negotiations with reducing health care costs and the like we just approved the retirement of 57 58. I did this literally an executive session as well and I should have probably looked it out but 57 58 employees um on a severance plan classified and certified employees and we've run the analysis on that and if we don't replace six of those employees three certified three classified which we've talked about with the board as a minimum amount of employees that we wouldn't replace we're going to improve our cash balance and our five-year forecast by five million dollars through this incentive program that we've had so another way for us to find ways to
save money in a creative fashion without having to affect our class sizes as our enrollment continues to decline and I will provide to the community the data point I remember if you remember from my September presentation in my November presentation I showed the graph that showed enrollment was declining and Staffing was going up and we talked about that from regards to uh covet and some of the changes we've made that that new data from last year's in and we saw a decrease in Staffing but we still know that there's areas that we could probably continue to reduce staff particularly since we have the number of employees that are retiring this would be the opportune time to do that I know Mr Heath and his leadership team and I've had many discussions that are committed to
doing that along with the board so um think it's important to point that out when we look at expenses for this year and going into the future that being said we're a hundred and seven thousand dollars uh to the good or less than we have projected in November if you're a math person like me you look at that if you're a normal person like most we all are we're all normal right uh 107 000 seems like a lot of money but when you compare it to a budget of 124 million dollars that means I'm .089 percent to the good that's not very good I mean it's good because I projected well right and we could say that that's great I could give myself a 99.91 as Mr Wilson used to grade himself in the past
I will just say to the board of the community as we try to get closer there could be a month where we're actually to the worst we're pretending you know as we try to get so close you know 0.089 isn't a very big margin for error so um with that we will track our spending and continue to look at the analytics month over month to make sure that we're where we're trending high or where we're trending low and kind of doing that so we have areas where we earmark um to the budget where we're below budget and where we're at budget and we're constantly looking at those areas so that when we have discussions Mr Heath and I we can say okay hey we're training a little bit higher here why is that and some
of it's out of our control like in our 470 accounts which is our tuition reimbursement accounts that we have to pay other districts for students with special uh needs for special education we can't control that sometimes that you know those are things that are kind of governed by federal requirements and if we have students that we have to have educational needs that are outside of that that cost us a little bit more you know that's Our obligation but there's other areas for example like supplies that we can control and we can because okay we need to kind of talk to the leadership team control that and do that and we do that on a regular basis and I appreciate that dialogue with Mr Heath as the superintendent so I'm looking at this area you know
nothing that is really that different from months past and we're trending pretty good so all in all we're training better than the forecast by about 350 000 so you know that that's a positive and we'll continue to monitor as we move forward for the second half of the fiscal year happy to answer any questions thank you for initiating that reduction through the retirements I think that's always the preferred way the timing is perfect as you know we were trying to right size our staffing based on our actual enrollment and gives us opportunities to make Replacements actually that modify costs and our health care is impacted so lots of of positives as a result of that initiative so very grateful thank you it's a win-win it's 25 teachers 32 classified 57 57. I knew there was
a I knew it was 57ish so with that too I will just remind to the board in the community with the last contract negotiations we did uh have we'll have some savings that we will be a little bit harder they're a little bit more of a softer savings as we refer to them as all those people as they're replaced I think we can all understand if we don't replace them there's a savings there if we're replacing them with less experienced people there's a savings from the salary decrease but there's also a savings on health care for us because our new health care insurance program that we passed and both collective bargaining agreements speak to a coordination of benefits so if the employees coming in and their spouse have access to insurance they have to take
their insurance that's offered to them they can't necessarily be on ours so that will reduce as we're self-insured that will reduce the risk to The District in that and help us control our health care costs as well so we'll see 57 more people that will have that that we wouldn't have seen it's as quickly as we are based on that Severance program so a collaborative effort with everybody involved the board the administration the teachers and the classified Union so I thank them for their support in that as well thank you Mr Wade Mr President members of the board Mr Heath I ask for the approval of items 8B through h D so moved second discussion name please call the roll Mr Wade Ms cook yes Miss dressling yes Miss brighter yes Miss Payne yes Mr
Tuttle yes motions carry 5-0 thanks on the agenda approval of the fiscal 2024 tax budget Mr Wade anything would you like to that's what we had our hearing on beforehand so this is the first step in the budgeting process for the next fiscal year this allows us to get approval from the board to get approval from the auditor for the voted Revenue that we've already approved from the tax base thank you do we have a motion discussion ready please call the roll up Mr Wade Ms jessalyn yes Miss Payne yes Miss Briner yes Ms cook yes Mr Tuttle yes motion carries 5-0 next on the agenda unfinished business we had none new business it didn't come with any new business but as I was getting to the bottom of my stack here I saw the
Ohio Department of Education letter do you guys all have that is everybody okay so we haven't discussed this yet I don't know that here and right now is the place to do that but is this something that we would anticipate it's a letter about the um resolution to oppose the proposed changes to Title IX and to affirm parental rights and local control of Ohio K-12 education just for other people who are um you know tuning in or listening I don't know if this or if you could answer Mr Heath like you need to have a discussion on this at some point because could it change what our current guidelines our current processes are around Title IX issues or bathroom usage or that kind of stuff yeah this was something that the State Board of Education
had passed back in December and directed the state superintendent to present that language to superintendents and board members across the state that's all that was directed at this point um if it's something that this board wanted to have conversation about in the future we certainly could those letters just came to us yesterday um as part of that directive so that's we're just fulfilling our obligation to provide that information to each of the board members if that's something that would want to be discussed in a in a later meeting of some sort we can certainly do that okay I honestly didn't even while we were sitting here didn't even look at the entire thing but um I will and yeah I would of course all of us probably will and if there's need for additional discussion
we can have it then and I'll have some comments in our board update this week around that as well all right great just to make sure everybody's aware okay thank you next we have hearing of the public on any topic we had seven people sign up prior to the meeting so I'm gonna I have a list here I'm gonna go top to bottom just through an order that I got them so um the first person that I have is Mr James Cherian good evening Mr President members of the board Mr Heath Mr Wade my name is James Cherian I reside at New York Creek Drive and we have three children children attending minor schools tonight I'd like to share a little bit about ancient history to show why we need to increase Dei efforts in
our schools sometime between the years of 30 and 60 in the first century Common Era a small religious sect began to gather around the teachings of their of their spiritual leader by all measures this was a very diverse group of people ethnically socio-economically and from different religious backgrounds they refer to themselves as followers of the way they were so well known for their radical hospitality and love that people either joined them or they ostracized and persecuted them very quickly as it often does a conflict arose you see within this new religious sect there are two groups of people there was the majority who were born and raised in that area and there was a minority group that had come from other parts of the world they were former Exiles foreigners they came with different ethnicities
languages cultural practices because of these differences they were often marginalized by the majority group this led to a lot of tension and disunity within the group people were being discriminated against and left out so the Elders of the sect acted quickly and decisively they appointed seven capable leaders to make sure this issue was resolved and the surprising thing was that they the seven they chose were from the marginalized group not the majority group they actually empowered the marginalized group to help solve the larger community's problem that's a radical idea when you think about it this is possibly the world's first Dei Committee created almost 2 000 years ago a Dei committee that was actually empowered to make real change one of these seven Dei leaders would later go out and work to include a person
considered a sexual minority in those days today that person may have identified as lgbtq Plus back then their full Humanity would not be appreciated but this group did and welcomed him like I said this was a radical group for that time they're upending of social norms made them a lot of enemies in places of power so much so that their alternative lifestyle and Fringe ideas were considered dangerous and they were hunted down killed jailed and persecuted you would think that that would be the end of the story for that group but they're of course now known as the first Christians and everything I've told you about is from the book of Acts the fifth book in the New Testament this is how those who are closest to Jesus live life in conclusion two thousand years
ago there's a problem with diversity equity and inclusion they didn't waste time over it they Empower capable people who are themselves part of the marginalized and oppressed Community to figure out the solution I ask you to do the same we need an empowered Dei leadership team composed of leaders from historically marginalized groups and administration level Dei officer that has actual authority to implement change thank you our next speaker will be Lynn Mazika Mr President members of the board Mr Heath and Mr Wade thank you for the opportunity to speak for to you this evening I speak for some of the members here tonight and the 248 members of the support public education and Mentor group and many of the silent But Mighty majority in this District they say never to appear on stage with either
kids or animals so after the wonderful presentation with the kids tonight I feel really sort of anti-climactic but I'm going to try anyway as you know the Ohio Board School Board Association and Governor wine have declared January to be school board recognition month and in recognition of this we thank you for your willingness to serve the district the board brings great honor to our schools with your dedication to providing for the needs of all students please keep striving to make our schools even better even more diverse even more inclusive and even more Equitable thank you very much for the time [Music] our next speaker is Jacqueline Mick good evening I'd like to reiterate some of the things I've mentioned in the past especially knowing that you're looking for a 2.5 million Levy in November and
a renewal Levy not to mention another 5 million in November of 2024. tonight I witnessed yet another push towards political agendas in our schools the osba membership being ten thousand dollars adds to a series of purchases that Mentor continues to make that are not universally supported by the taxpayers books in our libraries under the guise of diversity equity and inclusion have been purchased such as notes from the blender which talks about the student's obsession with pornography playing x-rated games and his fantasies about his own stepsister reside in our school library along with the books in our Middle School that was challenged last year and passed by the majority of the board to remain in our library called transphobia deal with it and become a gender transgender that labeled everyone who believes there are only two
genders as transphobic which goes directly against parental rights and can cause middle school children to question their parents and beliefs the kindergarten through fifth grade inclusive book collection that is now in all our elementary schools exposes our young children to sexuality gender ideology police brutality BLM and other political ideology and cost the taxpayers two hundred thousand dollars the better lessons training last year talked about the wheel of privilege and white privilege and stated that standard English is oppressive and cost the district nearly three hundred thousand dollars the initiative last year was Dei why not academics we still have huge academic achievement gaps and our state report card reflects this we need to get back to focusing on academic excellence and less on other controversial ideologies remember in order for our for a levy to pass
you will need support of most of the taxpayers and voters it is clear from the last election that Mentor does not have a large liberal support base yet you continue to appeal to that side of the political Spectrum I would ask yourselves if these facts were in front of every taxpayer do you still think a levy would pass this is something you should consider prior to making such decisions in fact I urge you to review the results from the last election prior to making further decisions that don't reflect the majority of taxpayers beliefs in our city you will see the overwhelming support of Republicans in the last election for our city our schools should not be a place for political ideology they should be neutral if you continue to support organizations and curriculum that go
directly against parental rights or taxpayers beliefs we will ensure you are supported the same way you have supported us and we will vote down all future levies thank you [Applause] Miss O'Brien thank you I must confess I share and Echo the words of the lady who had just preceded me the balance to that is that I really enjoy coming here and seeing the young students and hearing about the achievements of our students overall that is what I would like to see and hear more of but we continue to be disappointed by your decision making because this wasteful Reckless spending of taxpayer money has got to stop I recommend that you not join any more of these Marxist institutions and going forward with the one that you have joined today the osba I hope that when
the board members or teachers attend you will follow the precedent that you set back last year that they will have to pay their own tuition just as Annie Payne did because to be inconsistent would be a very negative message Mentor Schools cannot exist without the taxpayers money we provide you seventy percent of what you need so why not start focusing on the truth and not these trendy ideologies we must be responsive to all parents all students and teaching the truth is where Justice Falls not honoring One race over another remembering that God gave us our identities I mean have you seen the latest news over 100 scientific researchers have come forward and said there are only two genders there is no biological proof for anything other than that so let's stop this myth and deal
with the children as they need to be dealt with and Mr Heath I have a question for you what I hope that I hope you'll answer next month and that is I'm hearing that guidance counselors are talking to to students about this transgender item versus Crossroads professionals it is imperative that guidance counselors are that rather the counseling that the kids receive comes from not only Highly Educated professionals but licensed professionals and I doubt although I would like to know if I'm wrong that your counselors do not hold those licenses and therefore let's not make an error of misguiding our precious children these children need to be protected thank you foreign hello um don't do we have to still give our address and everything uh Lindsay wall two kids in Ridge and uh 7250 Beechwood Drive
my intention was to come here tonight and do a recognition for our school board members but as a mom of Rich students I think that Mrs Harem and our and our students did way too good of a job so we'll just we'll just leave that at that I also wanted to point out the article that was in the News Herald about our new superintendent and um his ideas for the future and enjoying uh the direction that our school district is going I could not agree more I know he is a really big advocate for the CTE programs and I am really looking forward to all of the wonderful things that come in the future I do real quickly I want to try and read something that I found last night since I'm not going to
do the same presentation that the students did I stumbled upon this on social media and I sent it immediately to both of my son's teachers because it just holds a lot of Truth so this is a this is quoted they don't know who the author is but it starts like this six years ago I considered going back to school to get a certificate in elementary education I thought teaching would be a pretty sweet gig with Summers off to spend with my kids I got a job working as a substitute teacher in our district with kids and grades k through eight figured I should test the waters a bit and boy am I glad I did because those waters are deep and rough and you pretty much need to be an Olympic swimmer to remain there
which I quickly realized I am not I am patient I am kind I adore children but I am not a superhero and quite frankly that is what it takes to be a teacher today it takes knowing exactly what to do when the tough kid walks into your classroom and tears with tears in his eyes because his dog died last night it takes knowing exactly the right way to help a child who struggles desperately in math without destroying their self-confidence it takes maintaining your composure when 27 children at 27 different reading levels with 27 different personalities are all vying for your attention at the same time it takes having a strong stomach because you will be dealing with puke and blood and boogers so many boogers and all kinds of other gross things it takes knowing
how to discipline without causing embarrassment it takes being able to handle a constant level of noise that would make most people's head spin takes being able to handle your heartbreaking when you see an innocent child hurting from a difficult family family situation that you were powerless to change it takes being able to appear confident when you have no idea what the answer is because I bet it takes giving it your all for the short time they are yours knowing that what you say what you do and what you model may have an impact on that child for the rest of your life because I bet every single one of us can name our second grade teacher and to this day a few times a month I stroll through the school entrance and it goes on
to go on but how he respects the teachers and he's glad he's a sub so to our teachers thank you for all that you do [Applause] Mr towns foreign uh good morning good evening thank you I'm Brandon towns uh rain Parkway two little girls one of which is here from Orchard Hollow um more of an appreciation month so thank you thank you thank you thank you for all you do uh I wanted to be up there um and I just applaud you I'm grateful for the work that you do all five of you um we do appreciate it um no it's not easy they're often thrust in the throes of support and condemnation uh but I asked that you continue to listen to our community interest our educators as we talk about kids need to
be protected they do and our educators are doing a darn good job not perfect by any church in the word but they're doing a great job so I asked you continue to trust them uh they are making the best decisions that can be made to educate our kids they are the experts we are the experts as an educator myself um and is important to listen but sometimes you as the board um you have to step aside and let the Educators educate um and you have done that uh sometimes by a slim margin but you have done that and I appreciate it uh and the last thing I would say is that I encourage you again to just remember that we are not judged by our opponents we're going to be judged by the future just
as those who sat here years ago are being judged by us today um those who were historically oppressed were oppressed in a day and age where they didn't think they were doing anything wrong thought it was their religion that gave them the right to do that they thought I was their privilege the color of their skin that gave them the right to do that and we now know that that was wrong that was an atrocity you know that now they didn't know that then may we continue push for the eradication the obliteration of the oppression of marginalized people I believe we are close I believe we are so close we are not there yet we have heard things in this room today that show us that we are not there yet and maybe continue to
fight for every student not every belief but every student and then will be better and better Mr Williams you're our last speaker for the evening foreign Mr Heath Mr Wade school board members my name is Mike Williams I live at 6064 Walden Court I have a question for Mr Heath um in August of this year you and Mr Hammond emailed men are teachers the mentor school board's guidelines um on use of bathrooms for transgender students gender pronoun surveys and notification of parents with regard to gender issues have these guidelines changed since your initial email went out I'll get you an answer okay and if so um has an upgraded guidelines email letter been sent to these same teachers and if not when will this happen and also um when this happens will the public be
notified of these changes and these guidelines that are given to Mentor teachers that's all I have thank you foreign ER yes Miss Cook or Excuse Me Miss Payne yes Miss Cook yes Miss jesling yes Mr Tuttle yes meetings adjourned at 8 24 pm thank you [Music]
