of the Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Springfield uh local school board uh to order. Very well said. Mr. Adams, >> Mr. Mason >> here. >> Mrs. Bola >> here. >> Mr. Terry >> here. >> Mr. Tropher >> here. >> Mr. Furong >> here. >> Okay. Uh President, would you please stand for the pledge of please? I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. >> At this time, Mrs. Warner will speak to us about the uh high school. >> Hi students of month for high school and junior high. We're going to start with um junior high. So I can have scout here at the podium. >> And this is what was
written about her. Scout Willis is such an amazing student. I am in awe of how consistently she shows up to class ready to learn and contribute. She is so respectful and sets a positive example for those around her. She has such a strong sense of responsibility it takes to be a student. Her work ethic and positive attitude makes her a leader in the classroom. And this was from Miss Taylor. So, congratulations, Scout. You're welcome. >> [applause] >> That certificate will be posted as you walk into the main building of the school for the next month. It will then move down by our community room where it will stay for the rest of the school year. And she was picked by our National Honor Society out of a group of other students who were nominated by
teachers in the building um from our National Honor Society. And when they see the nominations, um, everything is there except for the students name. So, they don't know who they're voting for. They can't vote for their friends. Um, they're making an anonymous choice. Um, I don't believe Belle Victor is here. Is that correct? Okay. But I will read Belle's nomination anyway. She was nominated by Mr. Hartong and her um, certificate will also be posted. It it reads, I would like to recommend Belle Victor. Belle always comes to class with positive attitude and ready to work. She always says hello and is friendly. Belle is always on task and turns in quality work that meets the mastery level. And again, she was nominated by Mr. Harton. [applause] Shrap intermediate students of the month. I do believe
Eli is not here, but this is what the sixth grade team with Mrs. Yakabuchi, Mrs. Elliot, and Mrs. Landon had to say about Eli. Eli is an exemplary student who demonstrates responsibility by consistently completing and turning in his assignments on time. He takes pride in his work and always puts forth his best effort in every subject. Eli shows respect to both staff members and his peers through his polite attitude and positive communication. He models our school's PBIS expectations by being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind in all areas of the building. Eli is dependable and willing to help others whenever he is asked, showing kindness and teamwork. His positive behavior and calm, thoughtful nature make him a role model among his classmates. Eli's reliability and leadership create a classroom environment where others can learn and succeed.
He's sixth grade. [applause] Selia Tom, I hope I said it right. Selena is in fourth grade with Mrs. Mc McFarland, Mrs. Wagner, and Miss Osborne. This is what they had to say about her. Selene is an absolute joy to have in our classroom. She comes in each day with a positive attitude and a readiness to learn. She consistently gives her best effort, takes pride in her work, and isn't afraid to challenge herself. One of the things that makes Selena stand out is her kindness. She is a wonderful friend to her and classmates, always willing to help, encourage, and include others. Her respectful and thoughtful behavior sets a strong example for everyone around her. Selena is also incredibly responsible. She follows directions the first time, stays focused during lessons, and takes initiative when it comes to
completing her assignments. Her dedication shows in the quality of her work and growth she continues to make. CONGRATULATIONS, [applause] >> Spring Hill Elementary. >> All right. Good evening everybody. I have two students as well that are uh representing our school here this evening. One is here, one is not. We're going to start with the one that is not here, Rajan Wemer. He c he is from Mrs. Sloan's room, first grade. Um this is what Mrs. Sloan wrote. Rajan is one of the most caring and hardworking students in first grade. He always comes in with a smile and is ready to learn. I can always count on him to help out in the classroom and to be a leader. He's always asking to help me in the classroom. I am very proud of Rajan for being
such a dedicated student each day. Rajan Wemer. [applause] Next, we have Mrs. Hoskin here tonight to present our other student of the month from her classroom. >> That's okay, Laura. >> Hi, I'm Mrs. Hoskin. I am a kindergarten teacher at Spring Hill Elementary and tonight I have the honor of [snorts] introducing and speaking to about Kora. Kora is the kind of child who makes a classroom better and simply a better place to be. She's a true leader who leads with kindness, compassion, and caring heart. Every single day, I see her looking out for her classmates, offering a helping hand, and comforting a friend, and making sure everyone feels welcomed and valued. Cora is kind to everyone she meets, and her actions speak louder than her words. She sets a beautiful example for her peers, and
I can always count on her to step up and help whatever is needed. I am incredibly proud of the responsibility, empathy, and leadership Cora shows each day. She brings a warmth and positivity into the classroom and she truly embodies what it means to be a role model. Cora is more than deserving of being student of the month. [applause] >> Congratulations to all the students who were honored. >> And now we'll have [clears throat] moving on to board members in formal Um, Mr. Parker, do you want to start? >> Um, I don't think I have anything today. >> Okay, Mr. Burlon. >> Um, thanks everybody for coming. This is my last one, so we'll pass it over to these guys over here. So, congratulations. Um, >> yeah, you guys can leave. Yeah. >> Um, no, very
grateful for the last couple years being here. So, um, proud supporter of this school and community. So, I'll be here still. And I'm missing my daughter's first varsity start right this moment. So, >> there's a little bit of itchiness right there. [laughter] >> Yeah. But thank you very much. >> I'm missing practice, but that's not really a comparable. [laughter] So, >> but I got to coach Kendall, so that's pretty cool. But um also my last meeting um did this for a lot of reasons and even though I personally did not meet all of my goals um I do feel that I stayed true to who I was and what I wanted to represent and myself and didn't allow politics honestly to get too involved with myself. Um it's a I I won't say we have
big shoes to fill because I know both of you have a love and a passion for our district. So, I'm excited to come and watch you guys do great things for our district. Um, but I think we're going in the right direction and I see great things happening here. So, it's been an absolute honor and pleasure to meet and work with all of you. So, >> keep going team. >> All right, that's all I have. Oh, and have a great Christmas and an amazing new year. Um, I think we've had an amazing month. Ohio State won, beat Michigan. I mean, how can you [laughter] >> can't top them? >> Did you see that girl had an Indiana shirt on? >> Yeah. >> In the picture there. >> So, but anyways, no, uh, merry Christmas and
happy new year to all of you. So, thank you. >> Go ahead. >> Well, when I came in, I uh I looked over at Miranda and I said, uh, you know, in some ways, I'm sad to see you go. And she looked at me and she said, "Don't worry. I'll still be around and I'll I will text you like I always have, if not more so. >> [laughter] >> now legally be alone. >> So, it it has been a pleasure to have you serve on the board. Miranda, learned [clears throat] a lot of you. You used to text me all the time. I mean, I was like, is she going to text tonight? And that's fine. That's a learning process. And we still learn even when we've been here for a while. And Donnie, I'm
going to miss you also. U really come to like you two, [laughter] >> you know, because we, you know, we work, we have worked well together and this >> Don't tell us where you started. [laughter] Yeah, it's been a while ago, but there's progress and I see it and we're heading in the right direction. And to Chad and to Kelly, I've known Kelly, Kelly's family for years. Our boys play football, Springfield youth football together. So when she called me in Redmond, Washington, and I said, "Well, you know, I'm out here kind of vacationing." Well, hang out. No, no, no. Let's talk. So, we talked. And Chad, it's always good to see you back on the dedication I've seen from you, too. So we will just continue. It will just be two new faces. So I
I I look forward to that. Uh with great anticipation and merry Christmas to you all. >> [snorts] >> I would like to thank [clears throat] in addition to all the others uh both Miranda and Donnie because I think you're kind of been the superlue added to um the work that we all were doing. I think that this board is I'm very proud of it and uh thank you very much for caring about the kids, for caring about the schools and for caring about the community. I I appreciate it. This Saturday, I [clears throat] was uh fortunate or I participated in Shop with the Cop, which was a uh >> awesome, >> a great program. Just a It was a great program. And uh I'm not going to name the young man, but I think this
is kind of the way students figure out life. He um this young man that I was with wanted to thought he wanted to buy his mom flowers for Christmas. So we he was it was explained to him that they probably wouldn't last until Christmas. He thought a little bit. He said then I'll just buy Lego flowers and build those form. >> Oh. >> And he then when he was there he said I'll get I think he got some for his sister too. But I just, you know, I just thought that's just the way things should be. But and I wanted to mention that. And I also think kudos, congratulations, [clears throat] thank you, whatever the appropriate term would be to all that volunteered uh in a lot of different ways for shop with cop, whether
it was the food, whether it was the wrapping, um shopping with the students, um and you know, they it was just a great community event. So, uh I don't want Christmas every month, but it'd be nice to have some kind of a uh or have more community things. So, uh and happy holidays and a season filled with absolute love and family joy. Wish to all of you. [clears throat] Okay, so thank you. Um we need a motion for approval of minutes. It's recommended that the board approve the minutes of the regular meeting of November 18, 2025 and the special meeting work session of December 8, 2025. And those were provided in exhibits one and 1A. >> So moved. >> Second. >> It's been moved and second, Mr. Adams. >> Mr. Hoer, >> yes. >> Furlong,
>> yes. [clears throat] >> Mrs. Fol, >> yes. >> M. Terry, >> yes. >> Mr. Yes. >> Motion passed. At this point, we welcome citizens comments on agenda items. Are there any citizens present who would like to comment on agenda items? And if so, would you go to the podium and give your uh name and address? [clears throat] >> Hi, my name is Tina Hartung. I live at 3781 Mayfair Road in Uniontown and I'm a seventh grade language arts teacher Springfield Junior High. Um, I should be able to just say this, but I'm I'm going to read. I'm not I'm not used to reading in front of people. As union pre other than my students as union president, I'm honored to speak on behalf of our Springfield Federation of Teaching Professionals as we recognize three
dedicated members whose careers have shaped Springfield in lasting ways. Their commitment, relationship, and service are deeply appreciated, and their absence will be felt in our buildings. They will be truly missed. Julie D. Tomaso has devoted 35 years to education with an incredible 33 of those years at Springfield High School. Her Springfield story began thanks to the legendary Kenny Vaughn, who told her about the position, recommended her, and in Julie's words, the rest is history. Throughout her career, Julie taught Spanish levels 1 through 4 across grades 8 through 12 in faithfully led Spanish club for 33 years, building a program centered on culture, connection, and community. As she enters retirement, Julie's most excited about traveling, sleeping in, and spending more quality time with her friends and family. Her advice to new teachers is very heartfelt and
honest. Hang in there. The first years are the toughest, but you can get through them, and the relationships you will build with students and colleagues make it all worthwhile in the long run. Those relationships, she says, are what she will miss the most. Um, tonight we're also honoring Mr. Dale Hanley for an incredible 33.6 years in education with 32 of those years proudly spent serving Springfield students. Throughout his career, Dale wore many hats, as Ka Lang would say, teaching seventh grade math, fifth grade um math, and a wide range of junior high courses, including CBI, history, health, and science. For the past 17 years, Dale has been a constant positive presence in elementary physical education, helping generations of students build confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for movement and health. Beyond the classroom, Dale gave
countless hours coaching from seventh grade girls basketball and junior high football and track to JV girls basketball and JV golf. His impact reach far beyond academics, shaping character, discipline, and resilience. Dale has also been a loyal participant in our teachers union for decades, serving in many roles to support our educators. As Dale looks ahead to retirement, he's excited to travel more and hit the links more often, a well-earned next chapter. When asked what advice he'd give to new teachers, Dale simply said, "You have to take care of yourself. We're all just numbers. Take care of yourself when push comes to shop." Dale, thank you for your dedication, your versatility, and your commitment to the students at community. Springfield is better because of you. And lastly, Mrs. Mary Beth Mitchell, if I may speak, she was
on the last um minutes, not this one. Um, she has an incredible 37 years in education, including 24 years of dedicated service to our Springfield community. Throughout her career, Mary Beth has served students in many roles as a general education teacher, tutor, and special ed teacher in across multiple grade levels, including third, fifth, seventh, and eth. Her versatility and willingness to meet students wherever they were is a true statement of her commitment to learning and inclusion. And as she looks ahead to retirement, Mary Beth is most excited to start traveling. When asked what advice she would give new teachers, she said simply, "Be patient. It will make sense eventually." Mary Beth, thank you for your years of service, your dedication to students, and the lasting impact you've made on countless lives. Springfield is better because
of you. Julie Dale and Mary Beth, on behalf of SFTP, we thank you for your years of service and commitment to our Springfield students. >> [applause] >> Thank you, Mrs. Tartto. That was very nice. She then moved to a custodial position in 2013 2014 and um working at Shrop and the administration building. From there she moved to the high school where she worked until her retirement. So thank you Debbie for all your service. Um, I also want to just um say about the pin paladvisor. So, this is something that we're bringing back. It's um bowling for special needs students. So hopefully what we'll do is we'll be able to find other schools that have um like a like a pin pal type so we can play against them and u have the kids give the chance to >> so yeah we're we're excited about it. >> It'll be good >> if it grows the way the sparkle program did. >> Oh yeah. >> When uh they first came to say can
we do this? What do you think? >> I thought you were there Michelle we said why not? Right. And it's grown into a north well I don't know if it's just northern Ohio. >> It may be even beyond that. >> I I don't know when the other when pin pal when um the pin pals were before. I don't know if it was like before co or you know was it a while ago? I mean I don't think we've had it for quite a bit of time. So it's exciting to bring it back. >> Yeah. >> Mrs. Fola. >> Yes. >> M. Terry. >> Yes. >> Mr. Mason. >> Yes. >> Mr. Furlong. Yes, >> Mr. Herford. >> Yes. >> Motion passed and all the retirees can try to figure out if they'd like to be
retired. I'm going to predict maybe Julie won't, but um number 14. Uh, it is recommended that the board approve a resolution authorizing the advance of local taxes by the county fiscal office for the 25 tax year payable in 2026. >> So moved. >> Go ahead. >> Mr. Adams, is there any comment on this motion? >> This is every year. This enables us to uh collect all the monies that the county auditor has in their possession for Springfield advance. Say people pay in advance. There are people that pay in advance cuz you get a break. Uh not a big break, but a couple percentage points. So whatever they have in their possession with our name on it, we collect. So >> thank you. because I I think that's important for the community to know that >>
when we talk about advance, we're not borrowing something. We're just >> No, no, no. We're just we're just getting >> what we have already. >> That's correct. >> Motion. 030just the part? >> I'm sorry. I I don't want to mess this up. >> I think I think that part and then this part. Now, we get to read the middle part. >> All right. Sorry, Mr. Mason. >> Yes. >> M. Terry. >> Yes. >> Policies approved >> this time. Uh, treasures report. Mr. Adams, >> I'm going to sit here. Uh I just wanted to give you uh we're five months in, right? Uh next month is usually the month I like to really analyze where we are versus the budget. But I thought it would be, you know, with all the news of all the districts around us, seeing all these surprises and stuff, I wanted to
let everybody know, kind of let people know that benefits and personnel services are the two main categories that represent over 80% of our expend expenditures. As you can see from a the bottom one, personnel services, the red is the actuals >> budget. Sorry, don't have my glasses. They're here, but it doesn't matter. And as you can see, we're under budget for personnel services. Actuals are 13,962, budget 14, million81,000. benefits actuals are 7,453,000 actuals actuals are 7,450,000 and the budget is 7,327,000 now we're a little bit over that we're over after 5 months but we have some grant transfers our grants have we're paying people out of grants we pay their salaries and we also pay their benefits. That will be done next month. We'll do a transfer out of general fund into the grant account
which will push the actuals for benefits down more in line with the budget. Okay. But the bottom line is after five months we're pretty dead on from what our budget's going to be. And that's a good thing. That means there's no surprises for the first half of the year, which for me means everything. Uh again uh all the other categories uh really in the whole scheme of things I wouldn't say they're insignificant but this is what drives your five-year forecast is your personnel services and your benefits. I just want to let everybody know where we're at right now. I will probably have a I will have this one up for after December and uh a few more that we can look at. No news yet from the oversight commission as far as uh when we
expect to be released, but I'm I'm thinking through the holidays. Everything's clogged up, but that should come uh pretty soon. I too want to uh from a non-financial uh say something about we have two board members uh leaving and uh I wanted to tell both of them uh cuz I know how difficult this job can be and how timeconuming it is but how uh beneficial it is and you two are such a Spartan. You love this community. You love everything about it. You love the educational. you love the athletics and your passion has uh is what really is it's all about. So, the kids are very fortunate to have you here. I was fortunate to have you as my boss and and uh good luck with everything. And Randy, you don't have to email me
anymore if you don't want to. >> But thanks again. >> Nag. >> Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Adams. Moving on to central office report. Uh, I'd like to give an update tonight about an upcoming project that we have in technology. We'll be through the federal program which um [snorts] covers a lot of technology related expenses, gives us discounts based on our free and reduced lunch percentages and so forth. We'll be completing some behind the scenes technology upgrades over the next month, month and a half um at the high school um is where we're focusing this year uh with the funding aotted to us and um so most people won't really see what's going on. It should have some improvements in in both just functionality and security from a cyber security perspective there. Um, but the
good news that I wanted to mention there is that the -ate um program is covering 80% of the cost of that. So, we're we're able to do those upgrades um to our network and stay secure, up to-date um with only covering 20% of the cost. So, it's a great great program that is offered to schools and we fully participate in that and get try to maximize our funding as much as possible. >> So, you know, you give a the rate. How do we how's that calculated for us? >> That's calculated based off of our free and reduced percentages of how many students we have in the district that are eligible for free and reduced lunch. They utilize that to calculate how much funding we receive. >> So, another reason why everyone should that's eligible should
register. >> Yep. And we'll we'll be we'll be doing another push at the beginning of the year once we come back from break. We know we still have some people out there that because we're offering free lunches and breakfast to everybody that may not have applied or missed the paperwork someplace. So, we're going to be doing another push once we come back from from winter break to try and catch all those folks. So, >> I honestly I would love to talk about a whole bunch of stuff, but honest I just really want to say happy holidays to everybody as we go through um the upcoming break. I hope everyone is safe. I hope they have fun. Hope the kids get to sleep in, make cookies, eat raw cookie dough, whatever it happens to be. Um
because we'll be waiting for them when they come back on January 5th. >> Thank you. Um so uh just like with shop with the cop on Saturday um we've had quite a few different um organ uh different events happening that people and organizations have volunteered for. So I just want to you know it's it's um it's really heartwarming to see everybody step up and and volunteer for our families and our kids that that needed in our community. So just I want to thank everybody who has done that. Um, I too want to thank Donnie and Miranda for being on the board for my first uh goaround. So, I appreciate that. Um, I've learned a lot from you guys. Um, and you have my number, so I'm sure you're not going to lose it. No. So,
