003an olympic bronze medalist you can also add her tenacity and perseverance as both have shined in recent months as the jones family was in the midst of the fight of their lives following a devastating house fire this young amazing woman refocused her priorities when she realized her dream of competing in the olympics was about to come true when she was invited to tokyo to represent the united states in the 2020 summer olympic games on october i'm sorry on august 4th when the world spotlight was shining on her o'shea didn't pull any punches and prove to the world that you can't keep a good woman or a big fighter down when she clinched the bronze medal in the women's welter division becoming just the third american woman to meddle in the sport of boxing since returning

004home toledo's favorite hometown girl has been honored by the city of toledo during a rally at government center then during a parade and in mid-november she will act as grand marshal for the holiday parade in downtown toledo she has certainly been busy traveling and training since she stood on the olympic podium with her bronze medal shining around her neck we are more than excited that she is here with us tonight and that we all finally have the opportunity to say congratulations on your amazing hard-hitting career and win in the 2020 summer olympics the shape you could come forward dr grant has a presentation for you [Applause] again we have uh young women of excellence along with young men of excellence after hearing about uh champion o'shea jones uh her situation prior to going to the

005olympics of the house fire they had came together they had raised money and wanted to raise money to present on behalf of moen woe to present to her along with some tps swag that she'll be able to represent no matter where she goes but again i tell you stay tuned she's more than just a champion olympic she's a champion at life and she's going to continue to carry on and be champion all throughout her life so with that said if walt youngren of excellence could present her with her bag as well as her checklist thank you [Applause] thank you all right [Applause] okay [Music] oh [Music] is [Applause] uh um hi everybody thanks for coming out um i really wasn't prepared for this but i just want to let um everybody know that i am

006so honored and grateful to even be here to be accepting these you know gifts from woe whoa so um i just want to let everybody know that i just want to be motivation for you know young women up and coming women you know who um we tend to doubt ourselves a lot and that was my problem when i was in the games i was just doubting myself a lot but when i was um over in japan um with coping and everything i kind of felt alone because my family couldn't travel with me so i seen a lot of support from my my city like people sharing my posts telling me nice encouraging words and i just want to thanks i just want to thank the city of toledo ohio for really really really really pushing

007me and motivating me to do my best thank you [Applause] thank you miss jones we certainly appreciate it i don't even know you and i love you already so yeah you're welcome here anytime anytime you're such a role model for a young lady so thank you very much doctor durant additional presentations i conclude the presentation portion ms major activity everything you have one more presentation oh mr eric dixon is here from mystery music and there is a video to show and then he will be making a few comments about his program and sharing some information with the board yeah uh [Music] so [Music] this [Music] okay [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] this [Music] oh um so oh oh okay so god yes you can check hello okay sorry about

008the long video i know that video was kind of long um they told me um i was trying to bring a group in to do a performance in here and they said because of covet i couldn't do it so i had to put a video online so that you guys could see it the nature of the reason i'm doing this video is to make awareness of this program a lot of you people don't know about this program now what happens to students involved in that video uh three-fourths of them are tps uh students and the problem with that is that even though three-fourths of them part of tps none of the schools they currently go to have the program due to code so the reason i'm here is to tell you about the program to

009make awareness of it and tell tps what i need from you okay real quick some of you guys may or may not know i am a product of tps i used to be the assistant band director at scott high school along with my father from the fantastic dance machine we traveled all over the country uh we traveled with when i was the assistant band director at central state university we got to travel across seas i got to be part of a movie with dave chappelle i got to do a lot of things so just to give you a quick resume um i'm an educator i've been for over 25 years in that time i've done over 100 different routines for over 300 performances worldwide put together a program called mystery music which is an exclusive

010one-stop shop performing arts programs for grades three through grades twelve uh we targeted students promoting academic and social success through the performing arts by offering drumline as you saw on the video step team pitch instrument training vocal performance and theatrical etiquette training bringing all the participants in our programs to five areas of focus discipline concentration team building self-esteem and confidence now there's a lot of students a lot of schools that would like this program the problem is because of the the new increase of coving no one knows what the the destiny of the programs are going to be or they're going to be after school programs so they're going to close the schools down and i'm sure you guys don't know either but what happens is we have a virtual performing arts platform so that

011the kids can continue to be part of the program and of course you know the last thing you want to do is have all that pinned up energy in your house where everybody has to go back to virtual but if we do we do have a virtual platform now our ultimate goal is to bring together the communities to create a new generation of inner city students with above level intelligence increased verbal skills intellectual curiosity and a strong appreciation for performing arts we can only do that with you guys if you guys can assist us in our funding with the schools who like the program they can't completely afford it so they have assurance that they'll have it and also you guys can also help now there's a the virtual performing arts platform i can't talk

012about because i only have two minutes to talk complete that's why i'm trying to hurry up and rush and see everything at mysterymusic.com i don't know if you can see my logo right here but it's spelled with a five that's ny5 t-e-r-y music dot com right up there forward slash rescue the arts and it has lots of information about our virtual performing arts platform about the different levels of uh sponsorship and partnership and donations that you all can assist us with and we greatly appreciate it i thank you for your time i think for your attention god bless you [Applause] thank you so much um i know a couple of us that said on the arts and athletics committee will certainly probably entertain a discussion on this um and i will say after watching the

013video i would just like an ounce of the the children's energy just announced a little smidge thank you very much for the presentation our uh final presentation for the evening is to recognize our retirees and these are employees who are retiring with 25 years or more of service deborah schmultz she is a food service worker at woodward she is retiring with 25 years and one month of service cynthia kriegel 8th grade teacher at beverly she's retiring with 31 years and 4 months of service anthony dodge foreign language teacher at bowser 33 years and four months of service and julianne lacrosse grade seven at beverly and she's retiring with 35 years and three months of service for a total of 125 years and two months of service to toledo public schools and we wish them all

014the best [Applause] all right thank you so much for the presentations and we'll move on to section 3 which is community commons what's your sexuality i'll turn over to you for a moment the board values the input of citizens and community members regarding all aspects of the district the board understands that education is the center of all community issues and activities and that input is important because it allows the board to hear all views on all matters in order to ensure a quality public comment portion during board meetings all citizens and community members who are scheduled to speak before the board shall abide by these general rules one each speaker has three minutes unless modified by the board president two the time will be displayed for the speaker and public to see the treasure will

015announce when time has expired three any questions that speakers would like responses to should be submitted in writing and the board president will secure answers within a reasonable time frame normally seven to ten days depending on the amount of research required to provide a comprehensive response and the time sensitive nature of the question four board members will not engage in policy dialogue with speakers but will use their established committee format to have a substantive dialogue the public comments section is the opportunity for the board to listen to all citizens and community members that make the contact with speakers following the meeting for individual feedback and questions the general guidelines are established as a way to provide the maximum opportunity for board members to listen to citizens and community members and provide an organized and structured

016procedure for feedback that will help our students and families thank you and just so everyone knows if you um hear us with a pause or don't hear us with the pause it's so that our interpreters have the opportunity to catch up with um what we're speaking okay our first um and only looks like uh speaker this evening miss angela taylor is angela taylor is she here hi good evening come on up and have a seat yeah the microphone should be on but if not we will make sure that it is on for you and you can pull that down to you or take it off whatever you'd like to do whenever you're ready i'm having a hard time understanding how is it that teachers at robinson can bring my daughter home during my procedure and

017i don't understand that i'm not understanding why that happened i mean aren't there rules and regulations to professional business teacher-wise besides bring my child home dr dorian you came here okay no but i want to make sure that someone from your office will connect with her yo what we'll do is get her name and then we'll have an atl with others uh contact her and meet with her i'm sorry dr dr none of us could hear you very well so can you speak into the mic if it's working hopefully oh hold on it's still not we certainly apologize for that i love technology test test test i just want to know always be that teachers you send kids home with no homework you call parents from their jobs and their appointments and you tell them

018to come get their kids i'm having a hard time understanding what's going on us as parents we're doing our jobs and we're putting our priorities together with the kids and we send them to school but then there's you guys on the other hand teachers and employees that want to send kids home because you don't have the time and patience to deal with them or if they're especially challenged like my kids you just send them home with no homework you don't try to find out anything and i haven't seen so many mothers up at chase getting off work being called off from work crying because your child is in the office and then i see another child get sent home because she's mentally challenged and you suspend her because you refuse to take the time out

019to understand when i was going to school there was a place that helped us what's going on with you guys what's your explanation for the things that's going on there's no guards for the kids kids are almost getting snatched up off the corner help me understand this okay well i'm certainly taking notes this evening we're not a we are not allowed per board policy to have dialogue with you on this but what we are doing is having dr durant and his staff connect with you to make sure that you have the answers that you're looking call over to for to get answers to find out what's going on and i'm not the only mother grandmother i'm not the only one up here at j school or riverside school that's having issues and i would like

020to know what's going on i have a 13 year old that started to live and all you do is say well um what is she doing at home before the prawns i had no computers but you're trying to look at me and say well if going on in the home no it's not it's what you allow and i don't appreciate the comments but she's still not doing anything and she's still getting in trouble and i need to understand what are you guys doing to help me protect thank you for coming to speak and we'll make sure that someone from dr durant's staff gets in touch with you dr durant will make sure that someone connects with her and gets her phone number yes mr sports are doing so i know pastor brock been working to

021contact her as well for the past week okay great thank you so much okay we'll move on to section four which is organizational input and we'll move here to um tech mr ramirez thank you first i'd like to welcome our ashley brothers and sisters in the back thank you for being here and representing i did have uh one of you i did my booster shot today at uaw hall i want to remind folks to make sure they get vaccinated and gotten vaccinated to get your booster the unions are in support of protecting ourselves and our children that we serve i want to also remind everybody about election day next week uh uaw has endorsed our three board members that are running for re-election and i do want to appreciate them and remind people to get

022out there and vote for our board members that are running for re-election lastly tap is still in negotiations has been going on since june we're hoping for a successful completion of those contract negotiations very soon thank you and that is great to hear i will move on to ask me then good evening um to follow up on what mrs romeros had to say we as well endorse the three candidates that are up for school board what i would like to take a moment and do is to recognize the important work that afscme is doing as we head into negotiations coming up we do have some dates that confirmed as of yesterday and we are one of the three unions which have the privilege of working with tps staff and children some of the work and

023some of the locals we do which many might not understand the work that afscme does that we represent just about a thousand employees which makes up about 25 percent of the total staff of tps we're building related services which includes the school resource officers here clerical and technical services custodial campus protection officers food service and transportation and some of the important things that those workers do other than their days may start at 5 30 or 5 40 4 4 45 in the morning and carry through it is doing everything from providing and ensuring safe transportation from school field trip sporting events ensuring safe buildings and grounds for students and staff and ensuring the students are fed and ready to begin their day for breakfast and lunch ensuring that staff certain students and staff are safe

024at locations paying bills for employees greeting staff and students at their buildings ensuring that staff are credentialed and qualified to perform the various tasks in the district that we have find supplies that are provided to students and staff so they can do their jobs in our schools every day we also are the ones that help celebrate our students to graduation for the ones who enroll students that ensure that computers and laptops and technical devices operate properly throughout their day so that they can do the work that's required to be successful we are the ones that the services we provide to each and every student staff member and public to provide safe and fully functioning facilities and buildings to promote learning within our district we are here today to represent a portion of who we are

025and the work and the value to the district that our workers provide we are afscme problem thank you [Applause] well thank you so much we certainly appreciate that and i i won't speak for the entire board they can certainly speak for themselves here in a moment but um i will say that nothing gets done in this district without our house new workers when when i was a parent in the district my first two friends in the district were the custodial and the secretary because the ones that made things happen in the building so thank you for coming tonight all right at this point we'll move to section five comments by the board mr vasquez uh yeah i would take this opportunity to thank all of our staff uh everyone we just came off a really

026tough time last year and you all stepped up and did what you had to do many of you had to be flexible and do different things than what you normally do but i want you to know that that was noticed and i will speak for all the board by all of the board because i we have talked amongst ourselves i'm holding in trouble for that um and we always talk about the great staff that we have so appreciate asked me that you know individual health staff preach appreciate tap and tft and all the workers and all staff so just want i want to thank all of you for everything that you've done and everything that you will continue to do the other thing i want to do is talk about and congratulate the people who

027made presentations today uh it just continues and continues to show the great things are happening in uh uh public schools so uh makes us all tps proud thank you thank you mr vasquez what's happened thank you i just want to echo uh what mr vasquez has said um you know it's great to see so many people um who are a critical part of our team here tonight and we appreciate you in the work that you do um one of the things you know it's funny i come from the business world and one of the things that i think is lost on most parents and most of the public is how many people it takes to successfully run a school they think oh there's a classroom teacher and a principal and we're done and that's not

028true at all none of none of the things that the teachers do and principals do are possible without the hard work of all the people who make the buildings perfect who make sure our children are fed who get the children to school and who stop parents at the front door when when you know the parent is like yeah i gotta do this and they say okay welcome let's be safe let's do this right you know let's all work together um and and even say they're tps proud while they're doing that so you know there's so many things that um go into running a school it's a very people intensive business and we can't do it without good people so thank you for all of your efforts um i will also pivot and thank our presenters

029it's always great to see the different things that are going on with our students and it's amazing that uh we do have olympians who come up to to see us sometimes pretty exciting um and i just you know want to take a note to say that we are really fortunate for we have a very supportive community um boards across the country have been struggling um you know with crazy meetings and people being hostile and i think that in toledo we are really lucky in our toledo ends so thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support thank you for the second birthday spartans thank you madam president um i'm so glad that we are able to be here today i know covet i i miss seeing a full room this is probably

030the first time a full room since i actually was elected so this is kind of like exciting and nervous at the same time so i'm trying to make sure i don't mess up um but in this one moment we saw a full circle of what tps offered you saw the the life that we given to the kids where they can do outlet through arts and crafts and claim their power and their space and take up space which is beautiful and then also we see the staff the heart of our school you know setting solidarity i didn't wear green today because i didn't wash clothes i'm sorry um but i just wanted to like see like the you know say this is what it's about you know i hope that you see what you're doing i

031know when i went to volunteer at scott uh two months ago i believe at the lunch uh as a lunch lady again i did it before when i was a new parent and to see their relationships you know when the kids come through they knew that they knew every child they knew what they wanted they knew how to you know keep them moving and it was it's a beautiful thing because we are our family and i wanted to remember that like even if in families you have the ones you don't really like so you don't sit next to reunion but you can't make too much noise because big mama will get you in trouble but you still love them for who they are and i want us to remember that we are family good bad

032ugly and sometimes irritated at each other okay thank you thank you as fun let's go good thank you i just want to say um thank you to ask me you're welcome at our board meetings anytime uh miss bailey i know you're uh wearing multiple hats but you have a permanent seat on the diaz it's finally nice to see you join us at a board meeting and and i hope we'll see you every month um i think most of you many people know that i started my career in tps in 1979 as an asme member so i spent 18 years in the clerical ranks having been a trustee i mean having been a union steward for ask me back when they had such a thing in in i say it all the time when i when

033i started running to be on the board of education my opening line is i learned how schools work because of being a school secretary because we know that this the the folks on the ground are the ones that that make everything happen so i brag about that all the time that that's how i learned the mechanics of running a district and i'm still very uh proud of all of the work that you do and i definitely hope you come and see us more often at boarding that board meetings thank you thank you i certainly echo my my colleagues and um i'd like to recognize the low girls i know they've already gone but they were phenomenal i and i love that this year we've taken on the um effort to bring students to say the

034pledge of allegiance it's so important to include the students in our board meetings um you know and that's why we push for certain voice right is to make sure that we have that that student voice element um okay let's go ahead and um move on then to section six of the consent agenda the agenda item 6.01 through 6.25 of consent agenda items board members may request to pull an item from the consent and move to the discussion section of the agenda item 6.01 to 6.05 is human resources chairs political american co-chair stephanie eichenberg item 6.06 to 6.09 is finance and business operations chair bob vasquez co-chair chris farway item 6.10 technology improvements and process committee chair stephanie eichenberg co-chair paulie dale guerkin and again i thank my colleagues for being the initiators of that particular

035committee item 6.11 and 6.12 board curriculum chair polly did working co-chair chris farwey item 6.13 to 6.20 is policy committee chair sheena barnes co-chair bob vasquez item 6.21 is arts athletics and student activities committee chair stephanie eichenberg co-chair chris farway item 6.22 and 6.23 is our family and community engagement committee chair bob vasquez co-chair sheena barnes item 6.24 and 6.25 approval approval of board meeting minutes i'd like to request a motion to approve the consent agenda so moved correctly it's been moved and seconded any discussion hearing on treasurer please call the role mrs gurken yes this is barwood yes miss barnes yes mrs eichenberg yes mr vasquez yes thank you section seven of the agenda consists of reports in minutes from the month's committee meetings and are here for information and reference no action is

036required so we can proceed to section 8 of the agenda section 8 is our discussion section and first is 8.01 it's a resolution in opposition to house bill 454 and i have requested that my colleague was sheena barnes read that thank you madam president a resolution in opposition to hb454 whereas a bill has been introduced in ohio in the house ohio house a representative that is currently in committee house bill 454 to prohibit certain procedures to alter a minor child sex and to detonate this act as a safe adolescent from experimentation safe act and whereas the district is committed to a learning environment that is physically socially and emotionally safe for all students and whereas still represent extraordinarily and unlawful interference with the just uh dissertation question thank you a public school to better ensure

037the well-being and protection of their students and whereas the bill takes away autonomy and decision making from both students and school staff in regards to a student's mental and physical health i can't see what this meant in my classes whereas the bill would unlawfully compel school staff to disclose a student's confidential information without the student's consent and whereas such disclosure may cause an irrevocable breakdown in the relationship between students students and school staff and whereas our educators students and community will endure a significant negative impact if this bill becomes law now therefore be a result by the board of education of toledo city school district that section one the board formally opposes and rejects house bill of the 134th general assembly as unprecedented and unlawful overreach intrusion into the role of public school staff section

0382 the treasurer is authorized to deliver or call to deliver delivered a certified copy of his resolution to the community leaders to the members of the house of representatives and ohio state and to a unto the officer of governor mike dewine section three this resolution shall be in full force and effective from and immediately after its adoption and shall supersede any prior revolutions or acts of this board which may be inconsistent or duplicative that's duplicative which the president's provisions of this resolution and section 4 is hereby found and determined that all formal actions of this board concerning and related to the passage of this revolution were taken in open meeting of this war and that all the liberations of the board and any of his committees that resulted in such formal action were in meetings

039open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements including section 121.22 of the ohio revised code thank you mr barnes for reading that uh i'd like to entertain a motion to approve um resolution in opposition to house bill 454. download second it's been moved and seconded any discussion ms barnes thank you madam president um i will try to watch my wording because this is very emotional for me and i say that because i can't understand if we're saying that we are for children why do we keep attacking children trans youth and non-binary youth are children there are babies regardless of if you don't understand or you don't want to there are babies and it's our job as adults to protect support and love the children not to bully harass or discriminate the world is

040doing that enough to them already just last month i have got a case where i'm working with a individual because of their identification as an lgbtq plus a community member they attempted suicide this is our baby this is our baby and the risk for suicide in the youth right now has increased because of the pandemic but let me tell you stats if a youth identify as trans and non-binary that individual is more likely to attempt suicide three times more likely to attempt suicide excuse me if that student is of color is there are four times more likely to commit suicide our job is to protect them support them love them and help them grow in their educational career not make them try to attempt suicide and so i will end on this note our children

041trans identify you or not are our children period thank you ms barnes colleagues beautiful anyone else yeah i just want to thank miss barnes for being very quick and bringing this very detrimental legislation to our to our attention i had an opportunity to share it with a national united against violence group that i'm part of and they are working on it with some of their advocates in ohio as well so we should be able to get some decent attention i think the biggest irony here is that they call it the safe act there's got to be something here that isn't lost this act is the opposite of making or ensuring that a youth is safe we might want wish as parents that kids could always come out to us first and you know that's great

042if they can or they can't but we really can't put it um and ask a school staff member to make a child unsafe by disclosing any questions that they might have about their gender identity and so we need all all of you everyone to call this state representatives and tell them that their version of a safe act is actually guaranteed to put young people in jeopardy i have never seen anything quite this obviously serving the opposite purpose of what some people believe that it should be serving so i will be supporting this resolution in opposition to house bill 5 4 54. thank you anyone else i will certainly just say that um at the end of the day we are about making student-centered decisions i just hope at some point in my lifetime that the

043state house and senate leaders do the same with that said treasurer please call the rule mrs gherkin yes mrs varwig yes miss barnes yes mrs eckenberg yes mr vasquez yes thank you we'll move on to 8.02 it's a resolution denouncing state board of education's repeal of a resolution condemning racism and advancing equity and opportunity for black students indigenous students and students of color they got it right in 2020 i do not believe they got it right just recently so i've asked miss eichenberg to go ahead and read this resolution thank you a resolution denouncing state board of education's repeal of resolution condemning racism in advancing equity and opportunity for black students indigenous students and students of color whereas on july 14 2020 the state board of education of ohio adopted resolution to condemn racism and

044to advance equity and opportunity for black students indigenous students and students of color and whereas the july 14 2020 resolution passed in the wake of george floyd's murder called for equity and opportunity for students of color and acknowledged the lack of equity in public schools for black indigenous and people of color students in ohio stating in part where separate but equal is no longer the law of the land but system systemic inequity and education has relegated millions of children of color to under-resourced struggling schools and whereas significant gaps between the performance of black students compared to their white peers exist even in generously resourced schools and whereas the state board of education believes that public schools are fundamental to our democratic society and that we must be dedicated to equity and thoughtful teaching of future

045citizens where racism bigotry and hatred have no place and whereas the path to equity begins with a deep understanding of the history of inequalities in inhumanity and how they have come to impact current society therefore be it result that the state board of education condemns in the strongest possible terms white supremacy hate speech hate crimes and violence in the service of hatred these immoral ideologies and actions deserve no place in our country state and school system and be it further resolved that the starting point of our work in racial equity must be reflection and internal examination whereby the board will look for ways to engage our members in opening courageous conversations on racism inequity and white privilege and be it further result that the state board of education shall offer training to members to identify

046our own implicit biases so that we can perform our duties to the citizens of ohio without unconscious racism whereas on october 13 2021 in a 10-7 vote the state board of education of ohio voted to repeal the july 14 2020 resolution and whereas the board passed a new resolution entitled a resolution to promote academic excellence in k-12 education for each ohio student without prejudice or respect to race ethnicity or creed stating that there's not only a growing national divide but a troubling focus on the color of one's skin rather than on the content of one's character and whereas the new resolution also condemns any standard curriculum or training program for students teachers or staff that seek to divide or to ascribe circumstances or qualities such as collective guilt moral deficiency or racial bias to a

047whole race or group of students and whereas the board in repealing the july 14 2020 resolution and passing the new resolution minimizes and disregards the very inequities it detailed in its july 14 2020 resolution and whereas the board of education of the toledo public schools district is in lies in support of july 14 2020 state board of education resolution and strongly opposes its repeal now therefore be it resolved by the board of education of the toledo city school district that section one the board denounces the state board of education's repeal of resolution condemning racism and advancing equity and opportunity for black students indigenous students and students of color section two the treasurer is authorized to deliver or cause to be delivered a certified copy of this resolution to community leaders to members of the ohio

048house of representatives in the ohio senate to the state foreign of ohio and to the office of governor mike dewine section three this resolution shall be in full force in effect from and immediately after its adoption and shall supersede any prior resolution or act of this board which may be inconsistent or duplicative with the person provisions of this resolution and section four it is hereby found to determine that all formal actions of this board concerning relating to the passage of this resolution were taken at an open meeting of this board and that all deliberations of this board and of any of its committees that resulted in such formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements including section 121.22 of the ohio revised code thank you ms eichenberg for

049reading that i certainly appreciate it probably one of the longest resolutions we have right um discussion by the board me i'd entertain a motion please so moved second it's been moved and seconded now discussion yes ms zuckerberg you know it's it's frankly a brutal and ugly truth but apparently if we don't have to watch a video of someone being brutally murdered because of their race that it it we don't we no longer have a racism problem and that's garbage and and i cannot believe that anyone would criticize helping our students understand how we have developed as a society to create the inequalities that exist um you know i was not brought up with a lot of economic privilege but certainly i know that i benefited from the fact that when i walked into a store

050no one looked at me funny to check what i was doing i know that when i was educated people made assumptions about me that may or may not have been true but were largely positive based on the fact that i was a little white girl and i hate to be that brutal but there are children in our district who deal with inequality every day simply because of what they look like they deal with inequality because generationally they have been deprived of wealth they deal with inequality because you know six decades ago redlining was huge you know i applaud our toledo community for for caring for these children and for taking steps to prevent things like redlining you know we've got progressive organizations outside of our schools that do that stuff but when i look at

051our students and i look at the things they have to deal with we have students who don't have beds we have students who don't have access to clean clothes we have students who don't have access to so many things and that happens generationally it happens because again and again and again they've come from homes without privilege and most of that is based on their race and ethnicity and it is completely unfair this is is horrifying that a group of people that claim to be leading education in this state set a good thing and get away i i'm embarrassed for ohio so thank you thank you mr vasquez i just failed to understand how any official can repeal a resolution that calls for condemning racism and to advance equity and opportunity i just failed to understand

052how anyone can do that that's all i have i think you me and the rest of us miss barnes so i am glad that you are in the room and for those who are watching because um what i hear a lot about is uh you know we don't know what's going on we don't know what's going on and the you know with our board the state board plain and simple they saying that racism is not that bad it doesn't really exist we're making it worse this is what our state board of education is saying um i'm trying to pick my words i get in good trouble a lot lately that we have a duty to support our educators to keep teaching the truth they don't want the truth because they want to continue to support

053white supremacy we can no longer let that be okay we have to call it out we have to shout it out and i know this conversation make a lot of people uncomfortable because we have not talked about race we have not talked about classism and all the other isms that we have not talked about but now it's time because our kids are getting it first they're learning from youtube they they understand a little bit more than we do and we owe it to them to get on board to start educating ourselves to start learning the truth about history and how america came to be america without trying to explain it down to make us feel comfortable i don't know what the answer is of why they are doing so much at the state house they

054must be really bored but i know it's going to take more than us making noise we need your help we need your help and you don't think it's going to affect you and this is how i put it right now we're arguing about crt maths whatever my son is eight year old eight years old he attained glendale philbot i am a tps proud mom when he's in high school if we don't do anything about it he's going to think crystal columbus was a great guy and i don't know about you but i will not stand to support any idea that christopher columbus was anything other than a murderer to the indigenous folks of this land we need your support we need you to write letters call posts we need to make sure we are teaching

055the truth and definitely opposing things like this they think that we was going to be asleep and not see what they were doing is this is not about george floyd this is about the black brown children in our community today thank you miss barnes miss kirkin yes thank you um i'm with you mr vasquez i just keep reading this repeal of a resolution condemning racism so does that mean it is supporting racism i mean it's just completely bizarre what i do want to mention and again i'm just so happy you're you're you're all here because uh you might notice that we're spending a lot of time in our board meeting on things that are happening at the state in fact i think more time today than on the official business of getting the work of

056this board of education done today you'll notice if you go back the last three or four board meetings two in three resolutions a month that we are opposing in this state attack on public education that keeps coming at us we have been spending so much time distracted by this attack on public education that we're not getting around to settling our labor contracts okay so like i'm just telling you the truth like we are fighting at the state level every single day while we're trying to provide a fair and equitable education and a safe workplace for our workers and a place for us to collectively heal from covent there's a lot going on we should be spending our time talking about how to how to heal from covent how we're going to make sure that the

057adults in our buildings are healing from covet we need to spend our time making sure that we have living wages and competitive wages so that we can deliver this quality education state leadership as they attack public education and try so hard to keep us from doing the jobs that we were elected to do and i i can't i need two more resolutions tonight that we had to read out and talk about how hard it is that's for this board to continue to do our jobs when we we have we have it coming at us right from the state and it's just not going to stop it's not stopping there's a whole long list more of it a lot more to come that we're going to be like full-time lobbyists up here when we really got

058a school district to run we've got we've got kids to educate so that's why we need everyone's help to stop this assault and public education thank you i will echo all of my colleagues they've kind of covered all of that i would just say that elections matter please pay attention to state board of ed legislators school board members it's important all right with that we have a motion it's been seconded we had discussion let's call the roll mrs gherkin yes mrs varwig yes miss barnes yes mrs eichenberg yes mr vazquez yes thank you very much we'll move on to 8.03 and that is the instructional section from the hr committee i would like to request a motion to approve discussion item 8.03 don't move it's been moved in seconded any discussion herring and treasure please
