Okay, if we could all stand for the pledge of >> allegiance flag to the flag of the United States of America to the stands one nation indivisible andice for to you. Okay. Thank everyone for coming tonight. Uh we're going to go on to recognition of visitors. Liz Barton sign in to speak about the PTO update. >> Um so first thing we're trying to do which we are really excited about is to partner with Mobile Ed Productions to bring a portable planetarium to the elementary school. So, uh, PTO would pay for this entire event, which is $1,895. And all students grades K through six would be able to go into this. It's a giant inflatable thing in the gym, and the company puts on um a planetarium show. It's really awesome. Um, right now we're trying
to work with Mrs. Braza and Mrs. day because the maximum student size is 90 and we c they can only do five shows in a day. So, we can't have a show for each grade. So, we're trying to figure out if we can combine grades. Um our and the goal would be to have that January 23rd and um our vice President Warren sent some stuff to Mr. Braza. We're working with them and then hopefully we will put our deposit in on the 18th and then we will make this a reality. So, it's should be pretty awesome and a really, really great assembly for our K through six students, especially students who have never been to a clinician. Um, the other thing we're working on that we want to let everyone here know about is that
we are working on having our very first reverse raffle and the date for that is Saturday, January 24th at the Randolph KFC Hall. Um, our goal is to have this be our biggest fundraiser. Um, so that we can continue to bring things like this planet planetarium and other big like big ticket assemblies and stuff to school. Um, so for everyone here, you should come January 24th. And if anyone here is interested either administrators or teachers or anyone building baskets for the raffle, we'll be raffling off baskets. We'd love help with that. Again, that is January 24th. Tickets will go on sale soon. Thank you guys. >> Okay. Thank you, Liz. Uh, at this point in time, is there any anybody who didn't any visitors that didn't sign in that'd like to to address the board
at this time before we commen? Okay. So, at this time, we'll call to order the regular meeting of the board of education on this Thursday, December 11th. Roll call, please. >> Mr. Terry, >> here. >> Mrs. Weren, >> here. >> Mr. Hicken, >> here. >> Mr. Moon, >> here. >> Mr. Wise here. And uh can we have a motion to adopt the uh listed agenda for tonight's meeting? A >> motion. A second, please. >> Second. >> Any comments or questions? >> Roll call, please. >> Mr. Moon, >> yes. >> Mr. Wner, >> yes. >> Mr. Hick, >> yes. >> Mr. Rice, >> yes. >> Mr. >> Yes. Motion passes. Uh that brings us to item five, the presence report. So, we have to do some things to kind of get ready for the upcoming January
organizational meeting. One of those is to set the time and the date. Um, do you guys have a preference? I mean, we've done it for 36 years at least, but I know probably probably 46 years. Uh, we've done we've had meetings on the second Thursday of the month. Is that okay for at least the organizational meeting? I think so. >> Okay. second Thursday at 6 PM. So you can look up the date and note that right now. Thank you. Okay. So the next item of business is we have to appoint a president promp. Actually we have to vote for it. So is there anybody interested in being the president prompt for the uh January organizational meeting and at that time during the organizational meeting you'll actually elect president a vice president a legislative leaison and
um that's the main offices I guess and a bunch of other stuff general so would anybody be interested in the president pro actually anybody I guess we got Tim and Pat anybody would like to be the person. It's basically you're going to come in and you're going to say who wants to be the president and once you elect the president, you hand the meeting over to them. So, it's a I I will sit there and do a few years ago. Not the last one. saying it's okay. He said he'll make sure that's >> I was told if I if I hurt myself >> a motion to get It's nice that Tim's looking out for me. I appreciate that >> the one time pretty good. >> Okay. So, can we have a motion to to appoint
or elect Dan as president promp for the January organizational meeting? >> Motion. >> Second, please. >> Any comments or questions? Roll call, please. >> Mr. >> Yes. Mr. Wise. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hick. >> Yes. >> Mr. >> Yes. Motion passes. Okay. Um, make representative um for the last how many years? >> Three. >> Oh, three. I thought you did too. Okay. >> Like three and a half. >> Okay. So, last three and a half years or so, it's been head over. She was we we appointed her and then she got off the board. But the way it runs, we can she's allowed to stay on if if the board elects. So, so um is well, do we really want to appoint somebody now because it's a you know, basically it really should be decided
by the five new board members in January. I mean, does that make sense? >> I mean, I have no problem with I think Heather's done a great job. I have no problem with that. Um, so we um he and I talked about this today. Um, I had gotten a uh an email from the treasur asking for me to let them know. Um, I responded back to her asking if we need to do it in December, not we already did it over town. Um, she said it can be done now or it can be done in January. So, it's it's up to you guys. You want to wait. >> So, I want to ask the three other members I get unless you I guess I have no problem with Heather. I just agree with you to
be fair. You agree? >> Okay. >> Heather's still willing to do it. >> So, yes, two new board members. Yeah. Something something to look forward to in in January. So, all right. Um Okay. So the next item of the president report I just want to to congratulate Joe and say how much I enjoyed working with him for the last what four or five years something only seemed like five or six. No Joe's been great to work with. I really enjoy working with you. Thank you for for everything you did for the school during that time. Appreciate it. If you'd like to say anything, please feel com feel free to do so. Yeah, I enjoyed working on board. Glad I was able to do it. Learned a lot. Hopefully did all >> great. Okay. So, something
I've never done before and I hope to be able to to do it. Okay. I just wasn't going to I have a few things to say. I'm going to step out front because eventually we're going to do some audience participation. So if you've got a you know phone and you want you get your light out. So I just want to I'm gonna step over here so I don't have my back. I'm sorry. Uh just want to take a few minutes to uh I'm here in my last morning tonight to thank some people and to reflect. Uh, first and foremost, my deepest gratitude to my family, Jennifer, Katie, and John, along with their spouses, Jeffrey, and Lauren, and the wonderful grandchildren, Addie, Lincoln, and Jackson. U your steadfast support, understanding over the last 36 years, have
more of me than words can explain. I know that that being a board member is challenging, but it's often even harder on this family. You share the sacrifices, the celebrations, and sometimes the misunderstandings that come with the role. You have stood by me for every difficult decision and every moment I could not fully explain. For that, I am forever grateful. When I first ran for the board, it was a hope of giving back to the larger community. They gave me so much when I was growing up. My childhood had it shared challenges, but time and again the educators and community members around stepped up to help me fill the gaps. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Park, saw something in me and went out of her way to nurture. She gave me opportunities to explore, encouraged
me to pursue my interest, and reminded me that I took anything I set my mind to. She was she was the first, but certainly not the last, to leave this indelible mark on my life. Because of Mrs. Park and many others from the water staff that have shaped who I am, I remain convinced that there's no greater profession than education. Several years back, an Ohio elected a governor that spoke unkindly about teachers and really attacked the OA. That set me to the point that I created and funded the Phillips Park Memorial Teachers Make a Difference Scholarship. It lasted for about 15 years and was given to a graduating senior that was lucky enough to be impacted by a lot of teacher. Service on the board has not been without its hardships. I admit there were
times, especially during my first term when the weight of difficult decisions nearly led me to step away. financial challenges, reducing staff positions, uh some of which were the very people that influenced me and treated me so well when I was in school. Um were some of the most heart-wrenching experiences of my tenure. Board members often have to bear these burdens privately because you really just you can't call, you know, you can't call your friend or community member and say, "Hey, I got this problem because you have responsibilities of confidentiality and enticement." My family felt the strength as well. sometimes losing friendships because of these decisions that they had no part in making. Yet I learned sometimes from tough mentors like my father-in-law Rich McC doing what's right for the district requires courage. objectivity and waiting.
Uh reflecting on my journey, I'm truly grateful for the privilege to serve alongside so many educators, community members, four treasures, nine superintendents, and 27 fellow board members. Over the years, I've witnessed firsthand the resilience and resilience and commitment of our district and community. even when times were uncertain and challenging. I'm deeply honored to have been part of the team that has overseen so many significant changes throughout the years. Together, we successfully advance the hospital facilities commission and secured emergency funding to build this great establishment warranty. I believe the state paid 58% of the cost for the road. We also made the decision to raise the two buildings that are now and Randolph that were close to a century old and we got rid of the buildings, donated the land back to the townships and now
are both parks in our community in each community. I have vivid memories of picking up rocks while I was in third and fourth grade on the field that is now our football stadium. I remember turning wrenches to help replace bleachers in 1990 and then a few again a few years ago and and I remember Malia Travis just a dream now we have thanks to the over the years we hired first eight first nine superintendents with seven of them going on to have outstanding careers our current superintendent Frank Gan is the eighth and we fully expect to achieve great things as well. Despite always being financially constrained and working hard on almost 41 campaigns while facing challenges of passing additional funding, we have made remarkable progress. Today, every student has a Chromebook. We've free and reduced
free lunches to all students. We've implemented STEM classes while meeting the special needs of many of our students. We uh and we have for the most part a student teacher ratio in the low 20s and continue to offer full day kindergarten. I mentioned full day kindergarten because when I first got on the board, one of the things that drove me to get to run for the board was we had had switched to full day every other day alternating days of kindergarten. We were able to quickly get that put back in all day every day and I'm proud to say that we have it still today. So, uh, we've also been able to save money by having, uh, retired and retired superintendent and sharing treasures with field or as we're now born with with Ryan Bridtown.
It's really an honor to be a minuscule part of these advancements. As a board member, you quickly learn that people come to you from all directions, even with their own perspectives and each with their own perspectives and concerns. In those moments, it's essential to have solid unwavering system to guide your decisions and maintain consistency. As the song says, if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for it. Anyway, many of you who work with me, talk to me know that I really have three core principles when it comes to our staff. Number one, hire the absolute best person you can find for each division. Two, evaluate each of the new hires their first year or two to ensure they truly belong on the Viking team. If they need mentoring, support them and expect them to
embrace the support and work hard to improve. Three, place our best teachers where they can make the greatest impact on our students, which I think is very important. Your best teachers need to be able to go out and do as much as they can, have the biggest impact on the total number of students they possibly can. While these principles sound straightforward, in a small community where relationships run deep, they're not always easy to uphold. I remember a superintendent once asked me about a situation as he would personally effectively. I told him then and I'd say the same thing today to be these three principles apply to everybody, everyone, especially me. Do what you believe is best for our educational program and I will support it. As many of you know, Jennifer and I are both
proud graduates of water. Jennifer from 1983. Pretty nice class. However, I was in the class of 1981, which is truly the best class ever from however our picture is missing out. We're one of the few, we're like the only class that does that. So, I'm trying to rectify that. Anyhow, one of my personal achievements, one of my greatest personal achievements is being able to uh because my ch children graduated from Waterl and I was able to have the special moment of signing the diplomas, passing them out as they cross the stage. They've chosen to make their lives here and now my grandchildren water as well. My granddaughter Adam is currently in first grade and now Lincoln is in preschool. They often remind me of the Viking weight fudge, especially when I appease them or say
something they consider unkind. For those who not know the Viking what who don't know our Viking way is a pledge recited by our elementary students to encourage positive behavior. I'm hoping Addie and Lincoln would come up with me and do the Viking pledge. Two, three. >> I to be responsible, safe, and kind. >> Good job. In today's world where intolerance can all be too common, the values of the Viking wave, being responsible, safe, and kind are more important than ever. These are the principles we should also strive to uphold. Not just our children, but us as adults. I'm just passionate today as I was 36 years ago. Through all my commitment has been to serve them with integrity and do what is best for students and community. Thank you for allowing me to serve alongside
all these all the board members and all the people that I was lucky enough to do and I really appreciate it. Thank you. Okay, we'll go to number nine. Number eight. >> Oh, number eight. No, you're number nine will be just fine. >> No, thank you. Thank you both members. you know, this is we really truly appreciate your leadership during this time and I look forward to continuing to to have you a part of our community. Couple things I just want to kind of share. Uh Mr. NR did write a grant for the retired Portage County teachers received that grant. It's to purchase a drone to use inside his class. Mr. is welcome to kind of later on share a little bit how that's used, what class that's for, but that's for a $500 grant
for that. So, we're very proud of that. Also in this year packet is the uh potential a calendar for next year to review. There's some changes that were that occurred due to some of theou theou teachers union. But in addition to some of the things we heard was the request for a full week at spring break. So you'll see at spring break, you know, there's a full week there and then also in Christmas time there's two full weeks with the Christmas break. The fair is a little bit later datewise. So that's why we we start school a little bit so later and then that goes into June. Teachers had opportunity to kind of review this or staff had opportunity to review it and u kind of more of like a 3:1 ratio. they they they
like the uh the amended calendar opposed to the one in the past. So questions on the calendar at all. So we'll give a chance to review that and then we can talk about that further as a board then next board meeting you got have an official motion to adopt. Yeah. So the other the other thing I'd like to do is I have some high school high school students here that would like to share some some words. Some of our some of our best student athletes inside High School. >> Education has evolved significantly over the decades. In the 1990s, it was common to see traditional teaching tools like chalkboards, overhead projectors, and printed textbooks. Computers are rare, and internet access was slow and unreliable, often limited and a single device. Students conducted research by spending hours
in libraries using computers. >> At the turn of the century, education underwent significant changes. Schools began to integrate computers and internet access, allowing students to research information and complete assignments online. The introduction of the Smartboard also made an impact in classrooms. In 2001, the No Child Left Behind Act mandated standardized testing for all students and the Common Core X standards became an important part of educational discussions. Additionally, hands-on learning remained prevalent through project- based learning, art projects, and field trips, and group activities. These approaches fostered creativity and social skills among students. Uh during the 2010s, several significant changes took place within our national education system. In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act, ESSA, placed the No Child Left Behind Act. The number of charter and community schools continued to increase. Additionally, the use of mobile
devices such as smartphones and tablets became staple in both K12 and higher education transforming the ways in which students study and engage with educational materials. The the current educational decade is what happened. It began with a pandemic response that alerted digital transformation in schools. As a result, students were compelled to quickly adapt technology such as Google classroom music. With secondary, students are now assigned personal devices for their brand. There is also an increased focus on students social emotional and mental well-being. Recognize that schools have a crule to play beyond academics. Additionally, architecture technologies and other educational technologies are becoming more prevalent. These tools are more individualized learning experience and real time effects to students. Therefore, there is growing emphasis on career and technical education. This highlights the recognization of alternate work success beyond traditional fouryear
degrees as efforts are made to enhance the physibility support the CTE and non-deree certificate program over the decades education has undergone significant changes yet we at war have remained committed to providing highquality education to generations of families who have walked through our home a key contributor to our success is Mr. Brian who has dedicated decades of service to Wallace. He has also served not only as a board of education member, but also as a father, a student, a father of a husband of an educator and a community leader. Throughout his tenure, he has been a strong advocate for students and his leadership has fostered stability within the community. Even as education has changed, Mr. Pres dedication, commitment and vision for water schools have remained steadfast. We extend our best wishes to Mr. Preser and thank
him for all he has achieved during this time on the board. >> Thank you so much. I'm Alexis. >> I'm Johanna. >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> So that concludes the super Okay. So, junior high school. >> Um, so we had our junior high hanging the greens uh last Friday. Um, it was, you know, great. It's always a great event recognizing students that are, you know, doing the right things in class that are picked to present those reads to their teachers. Um, our seventh grade band and our high school choir also performed. They did an excellent job. Uh, and I just want to thank Mrs. uh, Richard, Miss Richards, uh, for organizing it. Um, you know, she said she wanted to take it on. You know, first year as a principal, wanted
to organize the event. Um, and it was some people said it was the best one that they've seen in a while, and that just means I did a bad job the past few years. So, um, but it it was really nice, and she did a really good job. So, that's awesome. Uh, our winter concerts are coming up tomorrow. Um so our uh bands grades 6 through 12 um will be performing and also our high school choir. Uh that's tomorrow night in the high school gym. Performances start at 6:30 for that. The one the sixth and seventh grade band that was rescheduled. That was our snow day and they got they got moved. So um they're all together tomorrow night. Uh next week we have a uh spirit week uh for Are we doing the district?
are you doing? >> Grades 7 through 12. Um, and it's going to culminate with a winter sports pep rally uh that's being organized by Mr. Negron's modern civics class. They also helped organize the Veterans Day um assembly did a great job with that. Um they want to add some things. Uh there's going to be some more participation with the band is planned. Sort of marching around the school picking up grades down sort of building it up. Uh there's also rumor that there'll be a they're featuring all of the sports teams, a special wrestling match between Santa and Rich. So we'll see how we'll see how that goes. Um with that, so our winter sports are, you know, in full swing. Uh come out support our teams. Uh some special things just over break that are
going to be happening. You know, our girls basketball team is playing at Rocket Arena, Rocket Mort Q, whatever it's called now. Um on December 23rd, I think that game tips off at 3:30. Um and then uh next week on Friday and Saturday the 19th and 20th, we're hosting the 11th annual uh D3 Wrestling Classic. So, a lot of exciting stuff. Um you know, come out and support our teams. Um we uh I just want to congratulate our um one of our seniors, Delaney Miller. uh she was chosen as the December uh or one of the December they they picked two uh seniors of the month and that was by the Portage County uh team board that is made up of uh the seniors from all portage county schools. They uh you know and it's run
by the summit or the ESC of East Northeast Ohio. um you know they get together they do some you know projects and events and things like that but they recognize seniors each month uh so we have a team board representatives from waterlue they go and advocate for some of the kids and Delaney got picked this uh this month and she's a she's a great great kid and welld deserved um and then one last note is just theme night uh is was originally scheduled for January 28th um there's a bit of a snag with that some of our classes uh use that as a like midterm grade and the kids come and participate. They use that as part of um you know the grade and incentivizing student participation. Um so that will be on January 8th.
There's a lot going on that night. There's basketball games, there's board meeting, there's conferences for grades 7 through 12. The thought being that we have more people in the building, so we'll have more people attending. Uh that's from 5 to 6:30 and that will be hosted um in the elementary and that is my report. >> Great. Thanks. Any questions? >> Okay, we go to elementary. >> Tip of the season everyone. The elementary hosted hanging of the greens last week as well. Um an annual tradition here at Waterlue. Every staff member selected a student to participate in exchange of the Christmas greenery. All of K to6 was represented and we were fortunate to enjoy the sixth grade band's first public performance as well as Christmas Carol Sung by our third and fourth graders also their first
public performance. Um many thanks to the committee of teachers who made it such a success including Jennifer Bixler, Sarah Heppy, Leanne Ritz, Emma Laughman, Nicole Lewis, and Patty Mills. Additionally, I'd like to thank Miss Mediotti and Miss Studless for adding the musical elements and entertainment to the event as well as our custodial staff for their efforts always in our setup and tear down for the event. Um, the staff and local community members came together to make Christmas happen for 18 of our kids this year, purchasing gifts, all of the gifts on their wish lists along with clothes, shoes, and more. uh Ben Curtis Family Foundation who donates the birdie bags for our weekend food program. Um they also adopted five additional families um providing them with all of their Christmas gifts and holiday dinner including
a large frozen turkey. We are incredibly grateful for all of the care and donkey given to our students as this is um not always the happiest time for all of our families. The Viking store is open next week for students to spend their Viking bucks they earn when demonstrating that Viking way of responsibility, safety, or kindness. Um, this is a big deal for students because they get to decide how to spend those bucks. The store is stocked mostly with donations, which is pretty awesome. Also, the sixth graders, because they're special and the oldest kids in the building, they get to shop for the first time at the Viking popup store, which um is just a special separate store with sixth grade specific item that they can purchase. Any employee can distribute Viking bucks to students
demonstrating the Viking way. This is part of our building's KBIS plan. And over all these days leading up to winter break are filled with Christmas spirit and holiday activities. Santa Gant will be visiting on Friday. and Mrs. A and I will be hosting breakfast for students with snowball donuts and hot chocolate on Friday so the teachers have a little break in their morning. Um last on a personal note I'd like to thank outgoing board member Joe Hickey for his service and thank you to Brian Veterary for his many years of dedication to Waterl. >> Any questions? >> Thank you Julie. Uh, legislative report. Joe, >> uh, nothing. They're on little bit of a break. House Bill 129 reviewed. >> Okay, great. Thank you, Maywood. >> Um, some of the stuff is um, I talked about
a little bit last month, but I had I have numbers for you now. Um the first thing is the state of Ohio House of Representatives um gave Maplewood with this certificate for their um 50th year anniversary. So I just wanted to give that shout out to you guys. Um and then we have um we had 86 students with perfect attendance in the first nine weeks. um sophomore showcase was um the beginning of November. Um it was on the 5th and 6th and there was 939 sophomores um that came to visit that day. And of those 939, we already have 436 that have applied. Um and those 436 applied within the first two weeks. um visiting um we had conferences October 1st um and they had 17.48% of parents attend conferences. Um student of the month
was Ross Wood who is one of our seniors and um That's all. This is just numbers on um what like compared to last year what the what classes they've applied for. Currently, the highest is animal science with 65 students. So, if you guys want to see those numbers, I have that for you. But other than that, that's all that's happening. Oh, and they are hiring. We are hiring a um intervention specialist. So, if you know anybody, send them to me. That's all I have. >> Thank you. Thank you, Ellie. So, uh item 11 is new business. The board members have any new business that they like to bring up at this time. >> Okay. I just was going to say that uh we're going to proceed with the vote which is very should be pretty
quick of the rest of the agenda and then afterwards everybody's welcome to stay and it looks like we've got some cake and some water and some other things over there. So, you know, please feel free to stay and chat and all that kind of good stuff. And then uh also I just wanted to say that uh my family is uh having a reception I guess we'll call it tomorrow whatever you want to call it tomorrow night at Ponchos and Alliance uh 6:30 till who knows when. Uh anybody here is welcome to attend. Um we'd love to see you have some some refreshments and some appetizers and we got a big area there so hopefully if you can make it please feel free to stop in.
