001Yeah. Yeah. >> Like drove it on the road. >> I started working >> Tuesday and Thursday. moving different spots. I went to a meeting like two months ago said how long just got one of those years like 30 years I raised my hand you're doing one of those [Music] to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands one nation indivisible with allbody Thank you, sir. >> Okay, Liz wants to speak about pizza. >> Um, we had our September meeting and it was at the elementary school playground. We provided pizza, people brought kids, we had some new people attend, which was really great. Um, unfortunately, I had to miss it, so someone else took minutes and they're just editing them. So, as soon as those are done, we'll share
002on email on our band app. Um, this year we're doing a teacher spotlight each month, so teachers can vote on a fellow teacher that we will highlight, and the winner this month was Miss Media, Miss Mediotti. Um, so that's pretty cool. Um, the PTO Scholastic Bookf Fair is next week. I have been working with the um rep to like actually confirm a delivery date and time so they don't just show up which is what they usually do set. So understandably so we have it all worked out and that's great and everything's confirmed with Barb. Um after the week after the book fair we'll host a fundraiser in school and do penny a wars and um Miss Lero will send out more about that. Um, on the agenda, you probably saw that PTO was able to
003donate $1,500 to help the sixth graders fund the Camp Fitch field trip, which is really great. We're excited to be able to do that. We will be hosting the annual trunk or treat on Halloween, Friday the 31st. Mr. Nell has some students working on a flyer and then that will go home with students. And then there will also be prizes for the best trunk. So, if you attend with your kids or grandkids, you can vote on best decorated trunk. And then our next meeting will be um October 27th, um location TDD. That's all. >> So, I'm sorry. Next week you're going to have a book fair? >> Yes. The 14th through the 16th. >> Okay. I thought you weren't going to book fair this year. >> So, well, I will tell you that people there's
004a misconception because it wasn't during grandparents day, right? So, we actually talked to a bunch of teachers last year. We talked to some grandparents. We had discussions with the group about whether or not we should do it on grandparents day. Um mostly because we know that while some grandparents are really excited to spend a lot of money, there are also grandparents who can't. And we just don't we want to take that into consideration. And so we thought this year we just try it not during grandparents day because grandparents day is not like a PTO thing school thing. We just see how it goes and get feedback, right? So, if grandparents really want it to be during grandparents day and we can do that, I will be frank with you all and say that >> he's
005Frank, but I'll be um transparent about what's fair with you all that um it PTO doesn't make any money. It takes a lot of effort, a lot of volunteer effort, and we're really just making a bunch of money for a multi-million dollar corporation that is Scholastic. So we're investigating other companies that do book fairs where you have more control where you can pick different books specifically that books books that our teachers have asked about. So um we're investigating that and we'll see. But um that's why it wasn't during grandparents day. But if grandparent the feedback is overwhelmingly like we want during grandparents day then we would probably listen to the grandparents and that >> okay we might want to have the teachers announce that. Well we'll know next week when we have grand because >>
006we send out everything. We sent out stuff for book fair >> because I was at grandparents day the first day and a lot of a lot of the grandparents said where's the book fair? You know they were asking >> it did it did say on the paperwork that went home like the paperwork that I assume Mr. Mrs. Raza sent home said that there is no there was no book fair or t-shirt sales. >> Right. >> So that was on there and then like the PTO sent home the book fair flyers this week. >> I I think most people assumed because we didn't have it. >> Yeah. >> During during the day they weren't going to have it. So that was kind of the confusion. Okay. I got you. >> Yeah. >> So you didn't think
007I listened to your what you said, didn't I? >> You got it. Thanks. >> Okay. Okay. Uh, no one else. >> I don't have anything. >> Okay. Thank you. So, at this time, we'll call order the regular meeting of the board of education. Roll call, please. >> Mr. Perry, >> here. >> Mrs. Wer, >> yes. >> Mr. Hick, >> yes. >> Mr. Wise, >> here. >> Mr. >> Okay. And um, can we have a motion to adopt the listed agenda for tonight's board meeting? A motion. >> Second. >> Any comments or questions? >> Roll call, please. >> Mrs. Wer, >> yes. >> Mr. Wise, >> yes. >> Mr. >> Yes. >> Mr. Car. >> Yes. Motion passes. Um, for the president's report, I was just going to comment about grandparents day. Um, I've gone to
008probably the last 40. Most that times I have gone and I actually clean the table. I spend a whole day or every day there tables and stuff. This year I didn't get a chance to do that. I just went for my grandparents or my grandkids. It's such a great day because everybody's there. They're so excited. The grandparents are excited. The kids are excited. It's just phenomenal. So, it's really a great thing that I'm glad that we have and uh we're able to continue it on. It's funny. We used to have Batwater building and the Randolph building and and obviously this part of this was here for the high school and we used to clean out take out the gymnasium, empty everything out, put it on the mat and we would have move tables in there
009and every grandparent and student had a full lunch during grandparents day. So that was really interesting cleaning that up. But but uh but it was really cool just to see how the transition grew up, you know, through the years. It was like really nice day. It's really special and it's nice the grandparents that come in and uh and I kind of miss not coming for all parts of it this year because you know you see a lot of people you haven't seen and old baseball coaches in there for their grandkids or great grandkids and stuff. So, but it's a great thing and hats off to everybody that puts that together. Something that's kind of cool. I don't know. I don't know if a lot of schools do that. I know it's it's hard managing that
010number, you know, with having grandparents and you have upwards of four plus grandparents coming in, especially the younger students, but uh I think there's a raising her team and I think this year the kindergarten team was in charge of kind of organizing it too. >> It was um there were several um staff members that were on the committee. >> Yeah. You and I'm sure you're going to speak out. They they do an excellent job and they made something that could be logistically very challenging, you know, work very smoothly. It was it definitely was a special day and I was excited because as some of them were waiting, you know, I did ask I introduced myself and and asked maybe Waterl grads and there was quite a bit of grandparents that the one one pair actually
011said they're the first Water graduates. >> Okay. And I was like that's that's really neat. That's pretty cool. So, it's it is it's really it's a nice day and and Barb does a phenomenal job and we custom they made homemade donuts or they maybe they weren't homemade but they were freshly baked donuts. So, they were still warm when I got mine. So, that was pretty cool. Really nice. Everybody does such a fabulous job. So, um other than that, I think I'm good to go. Anything from super court? So, one of the things we're going to recognize is staff owner when she arrives later on. But uh you know just a couple things we want to talk about the updates district leadership team met. We're going to have three focus areas this year. Our climate culture
012early literacy and chronic absenteeism. So in this upcoming leadership team meeting which includes you know some of our classified certified staff our administration will work on setting those goals and action steps and so everybody across the district will be well aware of it. celebration. Our girls soccer team locked up the MVAC Scarlet League champs. So, we're very excited for them. And many of our teams are are getting geared up for the postseason, which is going to start next week. And you excited to see how everybody does. Um, something I'm sorry. Can I Can I go back my time? >> Yeah. >> I have a minute. Something you spent. You mentioned the girls soccer a couple weeks ago, maybe last week, probably the weeks are all blended together. I apologize. They did a benefit fundraiser for
013the breast cancer awareness thing and they did a nice job. They raised several thousand dollars for for a uh a local group that is done by all volunteers that has been just really great in the area for for breast cancer awareness and and uh all that everybody they they raise goes directly to, you know, helping families. um helping families that have are going through issues and helping with students that you know siblings of the or or kids of the of the parents that might be going through and and just all those kind of things. And that was really neat to see. They had a had an ice game and they I forget exactly how much they raised. I apologize. Um >> I think I saw on Facebook it was 1300. >> That's kind of I
014was thinking 1,200. So that sounds really which is nice for for an interview, you know. So it's cool. really nice thing to do and really proud of them for that. Some wonderful students and staff members that want to do right for people. So >> Okay. Did I cut you off or you >> No, I'm good. >> Okay. My bad. Um and this brings us to the junior high school principal. >> So, first I apologize for our dresses going right from here to our football game. So, um ready for that uh and be outside. But, um just a few things. Um so, the first thing we uh just had a meeting is that yesterday everything together. Um yesterday for our Asher drill. So, I know we mentioned this and we've talked about this a couple times.
015Um on October 31st, we're going to host um it's it's an active shooter drill. Um it's in coordination with Portage County um EMA, the sheriff's office, Atwater and Randall Fire. Um we're also going to have other outside agencies. So during that meeting, it was kind of everyone coming together. We had the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was here. Um other people from the sheriff's office, um other police departments like Marboral PD, someone was here from there. Um someone was here from the other PD. Um so the plan for that is basically to simulate like a real response um mostly with county agencies but also then with us um and and and kind of go through every single step. Um this is you know we do lockdown drills and stuff like that. This is far more
016involved. Um this is the first time I've ever been a part of something that's been this big. Um and basically they've been working through the county. They did one at Streetsboro, they went to Field, and then um we're the third one in the county. The goal is to have everyone in the county do it. Um so we're kind of all on the same page as far as what we do response-wise. So say something happens at Southeast, God forbid, we can actually go and help them, right? Or vice versa, right? Their administration can come, you know, mutual aid and stuff like that. So, um it's it's a terrible thing to have to plan for, but also to it's a for us to be able to do it and experience it and go through that. Um you
017know, we said yes. So, um that'll be on the 31st. There's press releases and things like that that'll be going out um just to let everyone know that is not a day with students. I believe that's one of those um one of or waiver days up if you will, PD days. Uh and so yeah, so that's happening there. Uh we have our band show uh coming up, the second annual band show um on October 18th. Um so there will be our band and then three other bands. Um Southeast Rootstown and Jackson Milton I believe are the three. Um last year was really great. The first time doing it. Um it was it was a good if anyone was here awesome event come out and support the band again this media puts on a good show
018but then all the bands do stuff together and things like that. Um it's awesome to have that here on Monday. This coming Monday we have a professional development day with staff. So just kind of highlighting what we're going to be going over that day with staff. Um on on our end we're going to be doing training for some aspects of our special education processes. Um, as far as having teachers get trained access to how to access those documents in an efficient way within the system, um, we usually kind of print out things for them now, but there's better ways that they could access more information. So, we're going to show them how to do that. Um, I actually was just at a conference. There was a whole lot of things that we learned about AI
019platforms and how they can work for education. Uh, so I'm going to be touching base on that with them. Um we're going to be going over PBIS or positive behavior interventions and supports the name changes as far as what the INS mean um from time to time but uh going over that. Um so you know looking at you know there's a whole bunch of studies that that reinforcing positive behaviors is actually the way to actually improve um behavior instead of focusing on the negative. So um and then also our teacher based teams uh those will be meetings that we're going to have teachers uh collaborating and stuff like that and some of those protocols um are we'll be going over that as well. Uh and then lastly we do before the next board meeting so
020I wanted to mention it here we will have our Veterans Day um breakfast and assembly um again uh that will be on November 11th uh on Veterans Day. Breakfast will start at 8:30. Assembly will follow. So, it's usually 9:30 and then we're usually done by around 10:30. So, it's about a two-hour event. Um, I do want to specially uh thank uh Mr. Negron. He has taken um he has an elective class. It's called like modern day civics. I don't I forget what the name is. We've changed it a couple times, but um it's new this year. Uh and he's taking that class and they're helping coordinate that. His idea was one it helps as far as from like a civic standpoint um but two that a lot of students have never planned a big event
021like that. So it gives them a glimpse of that. Um and then um I think too with with him being in the military that it's a it's a special it's a special thing for him. So they've been putting in sending out invites making flyers contacting veterans organizations about being here uh planning out decorations and things. They've been doing a whole lot of work um to go into that and they've been doing a great job so far. Um you know, so we're we're a little over a month out. Um but it's been it's been going smoothly. So um yeah, that's my update. >> What time is that? >> The breakfast will start at 8:30 and then um the assemblies after, but we usually go about an hour for breakfast. Somewhere in there 45 minutes to an
022hour just kind of feel it out. is usually the 9:30 of the assembly. It's roughly about an hour. Okay, what our program has been in the past. So, that's my update. Thank you. Okay, that brings us to the elementary school principal report. >> Evening. So, we had a wonderful two mornings welcoming our students grandparents this week and um it's been reverted back to teachers planning the days um that hasn't been done for several years and these the planning team was amazing and it included um Angie Lui, Brena Kirkbride, Taylor Piper and Sean Matthew Null and Morgan Turner. It was such a lot of work to a two-day event and they did such a great job. Um, and I wanted to give special shout outs to Sabrina, our um, secretary, and to Brock Dreer, our phys
023teacher, for their assistance. Um, Brock has planning in the morning. He gave it up both days to be the greeter to all the grandparents coming in um, unbeknownst to me, and I thought that was a wonderful touch. She was very welcoming to them. And of course, this to Barbara Brock for all of her um, arrangements and involvement as well. And it has been going on close to 40 years as Terry mentioned, which is pretty awesome. Um we are happy to report our new arrival and dismissal procedures are running fairly smoothly smoothly. Um it works best when the procedure is followed by everyone involved. Um the afternoon is the most challenging for us. That's when we have the most cars um involved. Although we can say we typically have about 380 students safely out of the
024building into the correct car or bus in about 17 minutes, which pretty darn good. Um, next week we have the Atwater Fire Department visiting our K2 classrooms for fire safety and prevention lessons. Classic book fair is coming as um, Mrs. Spartan had mentioned. And then the following week is bus safety week. Um, our K to second grades enjoyed a virtual author visit um, this week. Children's book author and illustrator Lauren Long. We made arrangements for this through a company called Bookalicious. And we have two more scheduled um, this coming year for a different grade band. So, everyone gets to be involved. Um, it was pretty cool to have this be live and for the author to be talking the kids through the whole development of a story and an illustration and then for them to
025get to sketch some of their their ideas as well. Um, our sixth graders are going to camp pitch for the first time. Um, they leave October 27th and return on the 29th. We hosted a parent information meeting at the end of se September which was pretty well attended. Um, about 20 families came. Um, very grateful for PTO's monetary support. We would like to thank them. Um students don't have school on October 31st, so Halloween celebrations will take place in classrooms at the end of the day on October 30th. Um our upcoming um professional learning on the 13th revolves around literacy. It is the elementaryaries um goal to improve our literacy instruction and our kids learning. So we have a professional um development session planned with a curriculum coordinator as well as a literacy coach for
026all of our teachers of reading. Um, and then speaking of literacy, we'll be hosting literacy night November 6th, and the plan is well underway by that teacher committee. And I did want to say something for our retirey and I can save that if that's okay until she gets here. >> Sure. >> All right. Thank you. >> How many kids are going to students are going to camp? >> U, we would like them all to go and we still keep saying that they're all going. We don't have all of the kids signed up, but we haven't gotten any nos from parents yet. Okay. >> Um, our goal is hard. >> We're still trying hard. Our goal is to make it so that every kid can go regardless of financial need. Um, KT is hoping helping with
027that and I'm really hopeful that that's going to work out. So, we're still still trying. >> We're still trying. >> Okay. Thank you. And is um Miss Mrs. Stone is coming in. Is she does she have a break in in in conferences as she's coming in or is coming in on her way home? >> No, she has >> a break. So what we'll do is when wherever we're at in the agenda, we'll just kind of when she comes in, we'll kind of break stop where we're at, recognize her so she can get back to her conference. >> Thank you. >> Okay, great. I think too. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Okay. Legislative report. Our legislative. What do you think? >> Uh so House Bill 186 just talking about the tax credit for residents school districts to
028the 20 mil floor. Um so increasing due to rising property values by reducing the effect of military. um sounds like it's going to be a little bit more difficult to plan and that sort of thing. So kind of interesting. >> Yeah, there's there's a lot going on right now property tax at the state level and you know in the current session and then also some things have possibly proposed for next November. So, you know, that's something that that we want to be well averse to and uh, you know, understand some of the changes that how that'll impact us financially moving forward. >> Okay. Anything else, Joe? No, that's the name. All right. Thank you, sir. >> Uh, there's not a lot. Well, first I want to say sorry for not coming to the last, I
029don't know, three or four meetings. I think I was coaching cheer cuz I'm such a cheerleader and Liz knows. And then um Henry plays middle school football so I've been at football games but luckily this tonight the middle school game was last night so I could come tonight. So anyways um there's not a lot going on. Um they are um looking to add an addition to the southwest portion of the building. Uh the plan is to build two highay labs and four classrooms in the green area that's there now. Um it'll be um there they'll put a hallway in between the coscology labs to go into those. So it'll all blend together. Um the project is going to take about two years to complete and it's going to cost well it's going to be about
03014,000 square ft and it's going to estimated cost is going to be 14 million. Um and then Mr. Griffith plans to start a fire and ENT program in there and then also put another um welding program so they'll have two which this year they had 70 students sign up for welding so they think that they'll have enough students to have two welding programs. Um and um they held their 50th anniversary celebration last night. um all of the teach well not all of the teachers they had all of the lab instructors um all of the lab the tech technical instructors volunteered and then um several of the teachers volunteered to run that and um it was very well uh attended and um I think that's it. Oh, the other thing is student discipline has been down
031this year so far compared to previous years. Um, and Mr. Griffith believes that that is um students getting accustomed to the new cell phone policies. That's all. >> All right. Thank you. Uh, brings us to new business. Is there any new business any board members would like to bring up at this time? No thing. >> No. >> Okay. Um, under it kind of fits under new business and it's just for kind of scheduling and thinking how for planning for the future. Everybody, I believe your term is up at the end of this year. >> So, in our January board meeting, your January board meeting I should say, you'll need to appoint a representative. They meet once a month, right? It is the third Thursday of the month at 5:00. >> So if you're if you're
032running, good luck. Hopefully get reelected and you might want to think about if that has any interest. >> Third Wednesday, >> third Thursday. >> You told I think you told me you did not plan on continuing my >> I will continue if you guys. >> So you guys get that decision as well. But just so everybody knows, >> but if somebody gets elected and they want to do it, then >> I'm sorry. I thought you told me you did not want to do it. I apologize. >> Thank you for >> Yeah. >> And any other no other new business? >> Brings us to superintendent business. >> All right. Superintendent's business. Letter A recommend to approve a step adjustment to Michael SLP step 14 effective August 22nd 2025. Can I have a motion to approve the
033step adjustment to admission the shell uh as listed? Motion second. >> Second. >> Any comments or questions? Roll call, please. >> Mr. Bonds. >> Yes. >> Mr. >> Yes. Mr. Second. Yes, Mr. Perry. >> Yes. Motion passes. Letter B is recommended to allow for the resignation Elizabeth H from Destination Imagination supplemental for the 2526 school year. Can we have a motion to accept the resation from Elizabeth Hayes from Destination Destination Imagination? >> A second. Please comments or questions. Roll call. Please hold. >> Yes. >> Mr. Riley. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hickman. >> Yes. Mr. >> Yes. Motion passes. Okay. So, we talked about stop this and we're going to go to which is perfect timing. It was almost like it was >> meant to be. >> It was. We want to put a motion on
034the table first. >> Um, we can do letter C and then we'll do that letter. >> Letter C recommend to approve the retirement of Tina Spellelman, teacher effective November 1st, 2025 after 33 years of service. We have a motion to accept the resignation for retirement for Tina. >> A second, please. >> I'll second. Any comments or questions? So at this time we would like to recognize Miss Spelman for her 33 years at Waterlue. During that time she began as a math teacher, title math teacher. >> Yes. >> became a first grade teacher >> then finished up fourth grade. At that point in time she's been a colleague and a mentor for many people including uh one teacher that is well respected and great here as well. She was this a student teacher under you, Miss
035Canal. >> Miss Canal, >> and she's, you know, like many of us, we're gonna be very sad to see you leave. So, you know, some of the, you know, I'm sorry. She's she's been a wonderful, wonderful teacher for many years here. She's a proud resident. Her children graduated from here. She's going to be a Viking forever and she's really looking forward to to retirement and she's she's going to be truly miss as an educator and as a friend to many many of people that she works with and and I've only had the opportunity to to be with you for a very short period of time and I'm very grateful for that for a short period of time. I'm sure we're going to try to find some avenues to get you back in there after 60
036days or >> I I appreciate um all of this time. There's not one of you had your son. >> I go back to Cody a long time ago building John was one of my first students who I purposely put in the back of the room. Not because he was a bad kid, but that kid loved to stand. I was a young first John. be like, "Stand and kneel." I'd be like, "John, you can't." So, we put John in the back so he could just stand and kneel. And he was one of my first first grade groups for goodness sakes. So, it's such a young teacher. I had Der. It was one of my first I think Dane was a little older after I came in. I'm not sure. So, um it's it it's time when
037this year I look at a lot of my parents are previous first grade students. Um and I put all my time in here many times thinking I had the opportunity to go somewhere else, somewhere bigger, somewhere better. We built our house here 30 years ago. We chose to send our children here and I couldn't wait to push that button to retire. everybody. Tina has never shut up about it for a year. You retire and it's you think you're ready until it's here. And I am happy to go out with Mr. Gant who seems like he's doing great things. Um and wonderful teachers who are retired before me are coming not soon after. Um who we all came together. So thank you for this opportunity for 33 years. Thank you to my my wonderful husband who
038would say, "Well, what happened today?" And he'd sit back and just let me go on whether it was good or bad. And um to um my one sister who's been by my side. We've had a rough five years losing lots of our family members and um she's always stuck by me and has no idea what it's like in my world. So no >> and never wants to know. So I I thank you. my my principles who um Julie who has especially the last few years had to deal with a lot of my emotional up and downs um with with um family issues. So, thank you all. >> I think Miss Mazer would like to say something and I would like to say quick thing I can imagine. >> Um so, we just wanted to make
039sure that we had a chance to personally and publicly recognize you. Uh many years of service. Congratulations on your long talked about retirement. Um, she certainly touched many lives here, ours included, and leaves a lasting legacy. Uh, we will miss her quick, her laugh, her honesty, her oneliners, and her smile for all of it. Um, and the heart that you have for your students. And although we truly miss her, we know how lucky little Claire and Carter are to get extra time. And then even though she'll miss being a teacher, we look forward to hearing about the fun you'll have for time for so bright. I'm ready. I'm ready. Those little faces back today. The little tears came. I feel guilt. So, thank you both. Same to you. It's been a nice a nice uh
040couple months at least in these two months is that feeling and everybody's support. So, >> now we have the scary part. They have to vote whether they accept that. >> Joey said something. She goes, "You know, now that you're tired, Mike's going to expect that dinner's on the table every night." I go, "Gosh, I think I'll go there and go, stop." I'd rather work. So, please do. >> Oh, I just congratulations. It's been a great time. Um it's uh interesting. One of the few things in the world better than being a teacher is being a grandparent >> and just so much fun and enjoying your kids and being so close to them and that is just priceless in your great health. You're young. So enjoy just enjoy it. It's you deserve it and and you
041know it's just so nice to be able to young and healthy and all those things with the grandkids, >> right? Have that chance. I hear a few people feel sorry for you and you say, "Oh, I'm, you know, I'm going to retire, you know, 56 years old." Like, they don't relate. But they also understand the mental, physical aspect of the job, too. And to be young and something else, >> and you have to keep working. >> Congratulations. Thank you very much. >> Okay. Um, roll call. Mr. >> Uh, Mrs. Whitmer. >> Yes. >> Mr. Hick. >> Yes. Mr. Wise. >> Yes. >> Mr. Perry. >> Yes. Motion passes. >> Thank you so much. We appreciate you doing everything. We're still one of the residents. So, we're still here. All right. I have a conference. So,
042thank you. Thank you, Frank. I appreciate you inviting me and congratulations. >> Oh my colleague is back one hard to leave behind but not for them all. >> Thank you. Keeping my mouth shut sometimes. Yeah, that's amazing. Bye. So letter P is recommend to issue substitute contracts for the following individuals effective within the 2526 school year contingent upon full complete compliance with the state of Ohio board of education eligibility criteria. A motion to issue the listed substantive contracts. Second, please any comments or questions? Roll call, please. Yes. >> Mr. Hickman. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Wer. >> Yes. Motion passes.
