We need a motion to approve the minutes of the March 10th, 2025 work session and the March 18th, 2025 board of education regular session. Second question. Goodight. Yes. Starcher, yes. Austin, yes. hands. I don't think so. Um, I think we'll go right on to recognitions. Yes. Okay. At this time, we're going
to have our student recognitions. So, I think Mr. Viso and cornerstone is up first. Am I in far enough? Good evening. Uh I am Eric Viso. I am the principal at Cornerstone Elementary. Tonight we have two great uh kindergarten students here and they're both here with their teachers. Um, our first kindergarten student is Carlos Moreno. And Carlos is here tonight with his dad and mom. Uh, if you could just wave and be [Applause] recognized. And Carlos was nominated by his teacher, Miss Clark, and she's here to say some kind words about him. Every school year, there is always one student that amazes me with their academic growth, their positive changes in behavior, and their unique special personality. Carlos is that person. When I first saw Carlos on K on their kindergarten visit day way back
in May of last year, he bolted into my classroom. He ran from place to place like a tornado and wouldn't listen to anyone. I thought to myself, "Oh boy. Fast forward to almost the end of the school year and his growth has been amazing. Carlos loves kindergarten. He gets so excited about every single thing we do in class and he can't wait to talk about it. He enjoys learning new things and making connections to it. He is kind. He's considerate, funny, a wonderful storyteller, a good friend, and a great listener. I'm so proud of Carlos and thrilled to recognize him tonight for student of the month. Congratulations, Carlos. Our second kindergarten student tonight is Charles Hunter Schultz. And Hunter is here tonight with his mom and dad as well as uh both sisters and uh
both sets of grandmas and grandpas. If you could just wave to be recognized. [Applause] And Hunter tonight is being uh nominated by his teacher, Miss Orchard. And she's also here to share some kind words about Hunter. Since the start of the year, Hunter has shown strong leadership skills and a maturity that reaches beyond his six years. He's a steady presence in our classroom and is one of those kiddos you can trust to be making the right decisions even when others around him may be struggling to do so. Hunter is a hard worker who knows the value in setting priorities like Habit 3 teaches. He knows that we'll work first and he never complains about it and then we get to play. He never needs a reminder about classroom routines, and he's very detail- oriented, taking
pride in making sure our things in our classroom are put back the way they should be, not in a slap dash quick way. Someday, Hunter will be doing big amazing things and making a huge impact on our world. And I'll be so proud to say I knew him when. Hunter, I'm so proud of all you've learned this year and all the things you all the ways that you've grown. Keep being you. You're the best Hunter Schultz I know. [Applause] Yeah, it is. I like it. It's like going down. Go. Perfect. Good evening, community members, members of the board. My name is Gabrielle Montgomery. I am the proud principal at Keen Elementary. And tonight, I have three incredible Keen leaders to share with you. First, I have Addie Carpenter, a first grader in Mrs. Fuller's class.
She is joined this evening by her parents, Mary and Brett Carpenter. If you would please wave to be recognized. [Applause] Add's teacher, Mrs. Fuller, couldn't be here tonight, but she shared with me her nomination, and I am proud to share that with you. Mrs. Fuller said, "Addie is the right amount of silly and serious. She knows how to have fun and knows when it's time to get to work. She is very responsible and comes right in and gets her work completed first thing. She will ask questions until you have no more answers to give. Her curiosity has her learning leaps and bounds. One day she told Mrs. Fuller about Taco Gat goat taco cat goat cheese pizza. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What are you even saying? Mrs. Fuller um she taught Mrs. Fuller
how to play the game and now the whole class enjoys it, too. Addie is a friend to everyone and loves to share about her love for God and Jesus. She'll probably try to invite you to church on the way out. She's a planner. She plans ahead and even has goals of becoming a gold medal track star in the Olympics. The sky is the limit, Addie. We couldn't be more more proud of you. Congratulations. [Applause] Our second leader at Keen is Perry Mohoki, third grader in Mrs. Osbourne's class. Perry is joined by mom and dad Erica and Jonathan and his siblings Price, Payton, and Paxton. If you could please wave to be recognized. [Applause] and Perry's teacher, Mrs. Osborne, is here to share Perry's nomination. It is my pleasure to introduce Perry, a remarkable third grader
at Keen. Perry consistently demonstrates kindness, leadership, leadership, and a strong work ethic that sets a powerful example for his peers. He shows initiative every single day, arriving prepared, eager to learn, and always ready to lend a hand. Perry is also proactive in his learning. He doesn't just complete what's assigned. He often asks for additional challenges and looks for ways to improve his understanding. Whether it's seeking feedback or diving deeper into a subject, Perry shows a true love of learning and a desire to grow. One of the things that stands out most about Perry is his ability ability to manage his time. Even with a busy schedule that includes afterchool sports, he stays on top of his assignments and maintains a high level of focus in the classroom. His ability to balance school and sports is
truly impressive. Perry is also a natural peacemaker. He is someone who consistently chooses to take the high road. When faced with difficult moments or unkindness, Perry responds with maturity and grace. He leads not just with his words, but with his example. Whether working on a team project or playing on the field, Perry brings people together. He lifts others up, celebrates their successes, and creates a sense of unity wherever he goes. Perry is more than just a great student. He is a quiet leader, a kind friend, and a role model to those around him. We are incredibly proud of him and the positive impact he's making at our school. Please join me in congratulating [Applause] Perry. Our final keen leader to be recognized this evening is Hazel Arnold, third grader in Mrs. Ratliff's class. Hazel is
here today with her mom and dad, Barbie and Will, and her brother Luke. Congratulations to [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you. And Mrs. Ratliff is here to share with you about Hazel. I first met Hazel when she was in her baby carrier and her parents brought her to parent teacher conferences for her older sister Eleanor. Then she returned when she was a toddler for her brother Luke's conferences. I knew after those interactions and having her siblings that I wanted to be Hazel's teacher, too. So tonight we celebrate Hazel, a third grader who embodies true qualities of leadership, responsibility, hard work, respect, and kindness. Leadership is not a title or a position. It is how we treat others and how we make a difference. Hazel leads with responsibility and hard work in my classroom. She chose a leadership
role in my class this year that requires her to come to my room before the school day even begins. She is on time every day, sometimes before I even get there, to pass out materials for me. She even took the initiative to add a poetry reading to our morning class meetings, of which she takes her turn presenting each week. Hazel also leads with kindness and respect. She was always willing to help a classmate, offer a compliment to someone, or just give a muchneeded smile when someone is down. She understands that leadership is about lifting others up and creating a classroom environment where everyone feels valued and included. When I asked some of her classmates what they like about Hazel, they replied, "She is always kind and respectful. I love her positive attitude. I like how
she calms people down when they are stressed. She is such a kind friend. She is always helping people and she is always honest." So today we recognize Hazel for the incredible leader she is. She's a role model and a friend to all. As she continues her educational journey, there is no doubt in my mind that she will continue to lead with responsibility, hard work, respect, and kindness, making Worcester City Schools a better place. Congratulations. [Applause] Good evening. I'm Jamie Tucker. I'm the principal at Melrose Elementary. Uh we have two students to recognize today. First, I'd like to introduce our first grader, Amari Gibson. She's here with mom and sister. So, please wave to be recognized. And Amari has nominations from all three of our circuit teachers, Mrs. Stoops, Mrs. Flory, and Mr. Slesac. And he
is here to share those nominations tonight. All right. I'm going to first read Mrs. Stoops nomination. So she said, "Amari does an awesome job in physical education. She is always willing to help any student with anything they need. She is particularly helpful to a student in first grade who needs some extra support. She is always the first one to be on his side at his side to help or cheer him on. I can always count on her to be kind and fair to everyone in her class. She also works hard to learn every new skill that we learn. She has fully mastered jumping rope and works on it most days at recess. Amari is an excellent student with a kind heart and Mrs. Dupes appreciates all your help during class. Keep up the great work,
Amari. Mrs. Flory had to say this. Amari is a wonderful student to have in art class. She is creative and focused. She follows directions well and always tries her best. Amari is also kind to others. She is a joy to have in class. And finally, I said I chose Amari for student of the month because she is a great leader in music class. She was quick to learn her concert songs and help support the class with her singing. She follows directions and is a good example to her peers. Amari is kind and compassionate in class, making sure that others are able to to participate as well and is willing to help if they need it. She shows up for music class excited and ready to learn. And she always tries her best. I absolutely love
having her in music class. Nice job. [Music] [Applause] Next, we would like to recognize kindergartener Alexander Sartin, who is here tonight with mom, grandpa, and both of his brothers. Please wave to be recognized. And I would like to introduce his classroom teacher, Mrs. Rosco, to share her nomination. Good evening. This is Alexander, and he is an absolute pleasure in my classroom. At the beginning of the year, many mornings, he would have a very difficult time coming into the room. We would have a hard time getting him out of the office and down the hallway. He didn't have much interest in participating and he just didn't want to be there some days. But after Christmas break, I met a brand new Alexander. He came in, his disinterest in school was gone. And these days, he comes
in, he's happy, he greets me at the door with a smile every single day. He smiles at all of his classmates. He's genuinely excited to be in our classroom with his friends. He answers questions. He shares his thoughts. He works very hard all day long. His printing is beautiful. I am so proud of the effort that he is putting into his learning every day and of the kind young man that he is. When I asked some of the kids in the class to tell me what makes Alexander a good friend, these are some of their responses. He plays with me when I'm sad. He helps me when I don't understand what to do. I love to build magnetiles with him at recess. We build the tallest towers together. He treats others with respect and he's
kind to me all the time. I am thankful that I've gotten a chance to watch Alexander learn and grow this year and I'm very excited to see what he continues to do at Melrose in the future. Good job, [Applause] Alexander. Hold on. Good evening everyone. Uh I'm Steve Furlong, principal at Parkview Elementary. This evening we have two fantastic students. Uh, our first one is Nadia Weinhardt. Her mom Kristen, dad Caleb, sister uh Mercy, and brother Moses are here. Would you please wave and be uh noticed? Congratulations. Nadia was uh selected as student of the month by Mrs. Sh and she's here this evening to share why it is my pleasure to select Nadia as student of the month. Nadia is a kind and respectful young lady. In music class she leads by example, quietly following
directions and encouraging others to do the same. This year she has grown as a musician through many outside of school activities which she is not afraid to share with her classmates. I nominated her to take part in the Wayne Center for the Arts Children's Chorus at the beginning of the school year and she auditioned for and was selected to participate in the choir. She also takes piano lessons and regularly plays for the CA class, sometimes playing duets with another student in class who also plays. I'm always impressed with her poise and courage when she performs in front of her peers. As a music teacher, I have the pleasure of working with students from grade to grade and have seen Nadia's growth as a student, individual, and musician. I can't wait to see all that she
achieves as she moves on to fifth grade and beyond. Keep up the good work, [Applause] Nadia. Our next student of the month is a a kindergartenner, Lucy Anderson. Come on up, Lucy. this evening. Uh Lucy's uh uh mom Jessica, dad Craig, Grandma Nancy, Grandpa Rick, and sister Sophia are here this evening. If you could please wave and be [Applause] recognized. Lucy was nominated by her teacher, Mrs. Hoffetter. And Mrs. Hoffstead is here to share why. All right. Tonight, I would like to recognize Lucy for her many accomplishments in kindergarten as well as her amazing leadership in our classroom. I asked Lucy's friends what they liked about Lucy, and here are just a few of the favorites. Xavier said, "She is nice to me and she is so pretty." And Coulson said, "Lucy is my friend
and likes to play hide-and-seek with her." When Lucy grows up, she wants to follow in her grandma's footsteps and become a hairdresser, and she is well on her way to achieving that. Lucy excels in our classroom. She has done so well learning how to read all of her kindergarten highfrequency words. And even though she may say that she does not love to read, she is pretty good at it. Her math skills are also phenomenal as she understands addition, subtraction, and place value. Lucy has written some pretty great stories this year that include a how to swim published piece and currently she is writing a persuasive petition about keeping our coat closet clean in our classroom. These are all wonderful things, but my favorite memories of Lucy this year are the times when I catch her
helping a friend. She is never shy to help a friend zip their coat as we head outside to recess or help a friend when they get stuck with what to do on a worksheet. Last week, she nicely reminded a friend to put their glue cap on their glue stick, and she was the first person I thought of when trying to figure out where to seat a new student. She made this student feel welcome and helped her throughout the day at her table. We have lots of different abilities and personalities in our classroom this year, and Lucy is always willing to help and be a friend to the person who is struggling, whether behaviorally or academically. I recently found out that Lucy's favorite person, besides her grandpa, of course, is Martin Luther King Jr. Well, I
have to say, Lucy, he would be pretty proud of you and how you include everyone. Great job, Lucy. [Music] [Applause] All right. Good. Oh, are we there? Okay. Good evening. My name's Heidi Hos. I'm the proud principal of Edgewood Middle School. You'll have to forgive me. I'm going to leave the board meeting and race to a lacrosse game because I'm also a proud parent of two people playing tonight in a big game over at Falls. So, I'm principal up top and then I'm going to do lacrosse on the bottom here. Um, but I am excited. Nadia, I'm excited to have you next year. I'm going to tell all of our music people that you are amazing and they better keep their eye on you. So, I am going to start off. Are you ready to
go? All right. I'm gonna start off tonight with Braxton Banick and he has a big cheering section in the back. He's got dad Michael, mom Jamie, sister Chloe, grandparents Carol Banick and Tom Banick, Sydney Klein and and Cheryl Klein, and aunt the famous April Banick. So if you want to wave and clap and I am going to let his teacher, Mrs. Will Trout, brag about him. Okay, Braxton is a very kind and respectful student. I don't know anybody who isn't his friend. He is nice to all the kids on our team. He demonstrates responsibility and diligence in his court coursework by doing his best in all his classes. He turns in his homework on time, which is a big deal at the middle school. Um, and he's always doing his work when he's supposed to
be. Braxton is a student that is representative of the rise expectations we have at Edgewood by being respectful to his teachers um and invested in his learning. I am super honored to be his teacher. Braxton All right. And next up, we have Kylie Courtman, and she has front row cheering section with mom Amanda, dad Josh, and her two lovely sisters, Madison and Chloe. If you want to wave and be ready. All right, Kylie. Mrs. Wolf Trout's going to brag about you now. You ready? All right, let's do it. There is not enough good things I can say about Kylie. She has grown up so much this year. Um, she works very hard in all of her classes. All of her teachers agree that she is always on task and working. She not only sets a
great example for other students, but is always willing to help others. Um, she does great in group work. She's always willing to pitch in and help somebody in class who needs help. Kylie's positive outlook makes her a great friend and student. She contributes to the positive school environment by participating in choir. Um, she follows all of our rise expectations and is a model for those behaviors every single day. I am super honored to be her teacher as well as with Braxton Kylie. Good evening. I'm Scott Muser. I'm the principal at Worcester High School and I'm excited to be here tonight to celebrate three amazing students. Uh the first student that I'm going to introduce is Megan Wineski and she is joined here by her family. If you guys wave and say hello. And Mr. Kester
is here to say a few things on her behalf. Um I have had Megan in two classes and I can tell you that she is an outstanding young lady. She comes to class every single day with a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute. Her work is extremely well done and very thorough. Um, I appreciate the fact that she goes above and beyond in every assignment and really wants to get the most out of everything that she does. She's also very engaged and participates well in class by asking a lot of thoughtful questions. As a result, her grades are outstanding. The strong work ethic that she demonstrates on a daily basis is going to take her a long way as she moves on to the next stage. um of her life. While her academics are
outstanding, the thing that sticks out the most to me about Megan is how thoughtful, polite, and kind she truly is. She treats everyone with the utmost respect and is a quiet, humble classroom leader. Megan is willing to reach out and work with anyone in the class. Um I've seen her many times go out of her way to make sure everyone has a partner to work with um on a project, and it's clear she never wants anyone to feel left out, and she includes everyone. It's very clear that Megan is a great friend and a great teammate to have. Congratulations, Megan. The next student that Sorry. Oh gosh, got ahead of myself there. Okay. Now, the next student that we're going to introduce is Philip Guyire, and he is joined tonight by Mrs. Gerber, who's here
to say a few things about him. And he has his parents here in the back. If you guys can wave, and a whole cheering section back there in the back corner. [Applause] So, Phil is a junior here at Worcester High School. He transferred to Worcester City Schools at the start of this school year and immediately started impacting the students and staff at WHS in the best way. He joined Best Buddies where he met his buddy and good friend Callen. Watching their friendship grow over the school year and hearing about the fun outings they take together has been so much fun to witness. Phil also works in general grounds, the school's coffee shop. Phil adds humor, honesty, and kindness to all of his classes and is a strong self- advocate. He is such a joy to
have in class. I am very honored to work with Phil every day and I'm so proud of you. Um I also want to shout out so he quickly became known for his unique ability to not only know what day of the week that it was that the day you were born on um in a matter of seconds, but he will then remember your birthday forever. So Mr. Knight, his geology teacher, uh recognized this amazing amazing quality about Phil and he now knows a pretty decent chunk of the staff and their families and student populations birthdays. Congratulations. [Applause] Next up, we have Stanley Stro, who's joined by his mom in the back row. [Applause] Wave. And Mr. Durban is here to say a few things. All right. Uh, last but not least, we have Stanley Stro,
aka Stan the Man. Um, Stanley has spent some time here at the high school. He's currently a 10th grader. Uh, since arriving at the high school, Stanley has grown so much academically, behaviorally, and socially. Stanley loves to participate in classroom discussions, loves to interact with his peers, make new friends throughout the day, and surprise staff members with various drawings. Um, he always makes sure to ask them for their favorite color as well to help them decorate their classrooms. Um, in the morning, Stanley helps out with the high school coffee shop to get the building moving. uh and is also a member of Worcester's Best Buddy program where he loves to help with planning activities, go on the trips, and socialize with all of his peers. Uh Stanley loves to tell stories throughout the day, jokes,
and share any experiences with any classmates or staff members that are willing to listen in passing. Um he is authentic to to himself. He wears his heart on his sleeve and he will always speak up when he has something on his mind. Uh we continue to push Stanley in the classroom both academically and behaviorally and he continues to do an outstanding job of stepping up to the challenge and showing up every day with a smile on his face. Uh we are all very proud of Stanley and the progress he has made over the years and want to congratulate him for student of the month. Good job. Congratulations Sorry. No more recognition. [Applause] Guess we're not doing that. Well, so now we're going to move on to the rest of the agenda. And I know you
all probably stay for that, but should you want to go home and eat supper and do the family things, this is a good segue for y'all to leave. Thanks for coming. Okay. Thank you. Familiar. Yeah. Okay. Gotcha. Mr. Goodight, I think somebody wants to say hello to you real quick. She did great. Oh, there she's right there. [Music] Okay, thank you. That's helpful. Okay. At this point, uh, Mrs. Krooks and the World Language Adoption Team will present their recommendation for the new curriculum. As we gather our team here, good evening, Board of Education. I am excited to share with you this evening our world language department as they have been going through a pretty rigorous curriculum adoption review process and they have some recommendations to make to you here this evening. So just to highlight
the members of our team that participated in this review. We have Miriam Stokes from Spanish department Melissa Rooney who was unable to attend this evening. She's also at the lacrosse game. Um probably quite cold over there. So we're actually glad that we're in here. But Melissa Reish, she alien represented the Spanish department. Uh Jill Forest representing French and Mr. Aaron Thompson representing the German language side. So as we started our review, one of the things that was important to us was to really highlight um how world languages are important in our local community. So we reached out to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and the World Language Consultant, Mr. Ryan Wartz, who actually is a former resident of Wayne County, grew up in Wayne County, and he shared these facts with us, which
I thought were interesting and surprising that actually French and German are two of the three most critically important languages to Ohio's socioeconomic well-being. Um, the top one being actually Japanese, but this was one that was kind of surprising to us. We wanted to make sure we included it. And that impact can be felt very locally. So, we listed a few companies in the area that are um French and German based as well as um Spanish-based. So, you can see some of those are well known to others and maybe some that um were surprising. As we um talked with Mr. WZ, he said that it's not that Spanish is not important to the socioeconomic well-being of Ohio. It's just that we're seeing an increasing number of native heritage Spanish speakers. And so, Ohio is actually closing
that gap. um including in those jobs that require collegiate degrees. So that's an exciting statistics to share. And then also one of the reasons that this is an important local um component, many students use world languages to meet the Ohio diploma with honors requirements, which requires either two years of two separate languages or three of one. Our adoption process is one that's probably quite familiar to you uh by now, but the first thing we really looked at is looking about learning in the 21st century. Um and how do we establish a department mis mission and vision statement? What were some of those important look fors and you'll hear that from our team as to what was important to them in selecting and making these recommendations. We looked at our scope and sequences to make sure
that the skills that we see progressing from each of those language levels are somewhat similar. And although the languages require nuanced skills, um we've had some great discussions about how we can kind of align what's happening in that first year experience all the way up through those level four. that helped drive the development of a look for rubric and we used that in alignment with the Ohio Department of Education's highquality instructional materials rubric which they provided for K12 world languages. Then we applied those rubrics to several different samples and I'll let the team share with you um the samples that they reviewed and the recommendations they have. Hi, I'm Miriam Stokes. I'm one of the Spanish teachers and so on behalf of uh world language department, thanks for having us tonight. And as Sarah was
saying, um we went through the process, the various stages of um developing goals and and what we were looking for in a book and the rubric and it was really it was really a wonderful process to go through. And um we looked at these five and um so you can see the various um books that we looked at. And do I do that right? Oh, okay. Here we go. All right. So, we really love Authentico by um Savas because um the one thing that really stuck out with us um was all the authentic resources that Authentico had. um hence the name authentic. And so um we were really really excited because we spend a lot of time trying to find um authentic readings, authentic listenings, um authentic write, you know, prompts, authentic videos, and this
book and all the ancillaries, they have even a book of uh like three per chapter authentic readings. The videos we noticed were all like in downtown Mexico, you know, city. They they weren't like a blue screen behind or a green screen or whatever they call and they're just standing there talking or a cartoon as we have in our our present book. Um so we're really really excited by that. uh very uh various guided practices, lots of scaffolding going from uh recognition of vocabulary to recall um and then to application uh real life situations and relative themes and then it fosters our development from interpretive to interpersonal to presentational modes of written and communication um aligning with the actful and OD standards and the 21st century skills. And lastly, we just said it's doable. It was
user friendly and it was something we can navigate. And as I'm one of the older teachers here, we like navigation. So, we're kind of loving that. And Melissa Rooney and I had a chance to kind of um really dive in deep recently in the book and just kind of seeing how it was laid out. And we we were very very excited by this book. And so again, these were just the things we really were excited about, the technology integration and the ancillaries multiple resources and the um accommodating instruction of course for special needs heritage learners and allowing for differentiation. So we were really really excited by this book and we'd like to present that to you. So thank you for thank you for letting me speak. I'll let Miss Hi, I'm Jill Forest and the
French teacher here at the high school. Um, I al also got to review about five different texts and I was super excited because there usually aren't a ton of French texts to look at. Um, so I got to go through these and a lot of the books when they update they just slap a new cover on them and all the pictures stay the same. The vocabulary stays the same. And I was excited to see that the Dakur who's from Vista that they've really updated their pictures, their scenarios, they added videos and things that are a lot more modern, people that are current that the students have heard of. Um because I've had to redo a lot of my stuff because the kids have lost meaning with all these the people that they site in here.
Um there is interactive learning. There's activities and quizzes that are within the book. Lots of culture um that doesn't focus just on France but the French speaking world. Um it has listening, reading, writing, and again like Miriam said that there's lots of authentic um reading and listening opportunities for the kids. Um these are just some samples of the pictures that are in there um and some of the readings so that there are um interactive activities. Kids can talk about it. They can see it and compare it to what they live day-to-day. And then some other culture pieces, uh traditions, French music and movies, food, which the kids are always excited by. And those were just some pictures of some in-class activities that we've done. Okay. So when we went through the process with the German
text samples, uh I didn't think there were that many textbooks and we did have a few. We had detox vary greatly depending on whether they're the one we use now was actually modeled for a university and then they brought it down to high school level. So we've been using that for a while and it was u difficult to use at times because they would do go too high in grammar and too much vocabulary. So the book by going through these we were able to really compare and contrast and um see the features and deutsu is a standards been used for a long time and so when we first started this process I thought well I'm just going to go with that I even told Sarah but then when I saw this one called team it
was clear that this was going to be the one that we were going to use because if all we had was the book and didn't even have the online component or any things I would use this book it's that good because they've been alluding to it. It aligns with the standards and it's cultural authentic. So everything in there is they don't just have vocabulary that they try to spread across three languages. It's vocabulary that you would learn there in the language and there's pictures. It's not presented in a list form. They're presented with pictures for each and every word that you're going to be learning. So that the students are getting a visual right off the bat and it's written and then they have the audio with it as well. All all in one-stop shop.
So, it's really going to be nice to teach from instead of having to look for all of these different sources sometimes. Um, as technology, it's fully integrated online as well and audio and video opponents. And it's called the Poto team because the characters in here are like reporters and they're going to different parts of Germany and they're uh discovering the cultural landmarks and where they're from and the students are learning and so it's like following a story line with them, a narrative. And so the next page kind of shows you it's called um chapter one Halawas Hanborg and the person introduces himself but then they show you right there the hamburgen and then the map shows Germany then where Hamburg is in there and gives information so it's all right there and it's in using
the three modes of communication which is interpretive you know listening speaking then interpersonal uh speaking writing and then presentational modes of communication which is so important in the all the foreign language texts nowadays um so that we are aligning with standards and the students aren't just learning how to read and maybe write but they are having to communicate in the language which is our highest goal and then I think that's it. All right. Well, thank you. A few other things that the team as a whole is going to present as a request. Um, some of them are online supports. So, they have some game-based interactive web apps. Um, websites for practicing verb conjugation. I know I would have appreciated that as a high school student taking French. That was always quite difficult. So, these are
just supportive curriculum components. I heard a lot, you've heard them speak a lot about that authentic text. all of these curriculums that they're presenting certainly have elements of authentic text. And that means that we're reading uh prints that would come from the actual target language, not something that was created for the purpose of learning the language. And so as they're unpacking that, we also want to have a budget for them to continue to supply those authentic texts. So whether that looks like a children's book in the native language or heritage language um and then also looking at potential um newspaper articles and print. Again, we want students to be experiencing the the text authentically, not something that was created just for language acquisition. And then the last thing is supporting those hands-on cultural experiences. I
think a lot of times in the world language department this sounds like the food days, but that is a very real and enjoyable part of the student experience in the world language that really helps them understand some of those traditions and customs um and holidays that they celebrate elsewhere around the world. So those are their asks and their presentations. We say gracias, merci and uh any questions? Nope. Thank you. Well done. Thank you. Appreciate it very much. This team was excellent. I'm very proud of the work. Thank you so much for your consideration. Thank you. Okay. Uh moving on to public content. As a matter of state law and board policy, our meetings are open to the public. If you have a question or an issue you wish to bring before the board, please complete
the communication form on the back table of the LGIR or fill out the electronic public participation form located at the board of education web page. If you have any questions, comments you wish to bring before the board, please complete the online form uh by 5:30. If you would like comment to read aloud by 6 pm, if you prefer to speak in person at the board meeting. So, do we have any such people here tonight? I don't think so. I don't think so. Okay. All right. Moving on. We need uh a motion to approve the Consent agenda for the treasurer. So moved. Okay. So uh tonight I have the uh March uh 2025 financial report um for you. Um again we look at this uh compare this to the forecast. So it would be the forecast
you approved in November. Revenue is um is favor u trending unfavorable by a little less than a half million dollars. Most of that's because of investments. Um you know we we thought investments would income would be a little bit higher. Um when you look at expenditures uh we are favorable for about $400,000. A lot of it is due to, you know, just um not spending as much on our purchase services and our other expenses. So, when you look at that, we're we're doing pretty well overall in favor of or um compared to the forecast um or unfavorable by about $61,000. So, um we we are in the process right now, you know, Gabe and I are looking at state budget and and all of that. Um working on the forecast to bring to you next
board meeting. um at the May board meeting to do our update. So, we will have that uh for you at the next board meeting. Uh donations um again very people very supportive of our sports program. So, we have donations to the girls lacrosse team and also Worcester um uh the football team. I have a couple things for you to approve um tonight with the consent agenda bringing the work workers compensation program and this is the support we get um you know for participating or uh workers comp. We have to pay this yearly fee. I have the application for student accident coverage on here that you approve every year um that we put on our website students can participate in or families. And then the last one is our contract with uh strategic management solutions for
-ate consulting um for category one funding. And that is my consent agenda. I know I've mentioned this in the past, but the forecast this year has been incredibly accurate. Well done. You have really just been it's been right on pace. Some variance due to timing on things, but overall it's just been really really strong. else. Just I think adding to what Amy said about the forecast that she does do a great job of making accurate. We'll have that in in May. There's a lot of moving parts right now. Um that I I think our board is aware of, but I think it would be important for our community to know as well. Um the House has passed their version of the budget um which pretty much kept state funding flat in the end. At first
it was it was looking to be reduced, but it was similar. Ended up being flat. But there is a a provision in there that is um would be very impactful for us and many other districts in Ohio uh and including most in Wayne County, which is that if your cash balance is over 30% uh of your yearly, uh expenditures, um uh tax collections could be reduced by the county budget commission. There's still a lot of gray there. There's still a lot of moving parts. Obviously, it goes to the Senate. You know, the final budget is not in place yet, but uh something that Amy and I are monitoring pretty pretty significantly right now is um you know, could could lead to some major impacts and changes for for us and many others. What is the
timing, Gabe, on the the next steps going to Senate and then So, it's um they take I think they're on break the week right now and the week after Easter. technically the legislature is and then the Senate will start to work through it. Um so I think we're probably uh just a ballpark. I'm not but maybe a month before we'll have full clarity. We may have it by the May board meeting and we'll kind of with the forecast we'll determine you know whether we make the forecast with or without that because even once that would go into effect there would still be some unknowns that we need to get clear from the county budget commission. Good. Wright. Yes. Starcher. Yes. Austin. Yes. Kleinhands. Yes. Okay. We'll move on to the superintendent's uh agenda. So motion
to um for the superintendent's consent agenda. Second. All right. Uh large consent agenda this evening. Uh I will start with personnel here. So we have Julie Yoda retiring after many years of service here. We appreciate her time here. And McKenzie Weaver resignation. Uh she worked here a few years, did a great job and is is moving I think to another area of Ohio on our certified employment. Uh have uh several great uh candidates to recognize and including some that attended tonight and I really appreciate that. I want to make sure that you guys as a board can can can see them as well. So, I'll go through. We have Kelsey Donnu, uh, who is a new guidance counselor at the high school, and Kelsey is up there with her husband, Luke. Um, and we're really
excited to have Kelsey. She comes to us from Northwestern. Um, Maria Young, uh, is a fifth grade math teacher. We have Tyler Dennis, who is also here. Uh, Tyler is coming to us from Ritman uh, as a football coach and PE teacher. Uh this P PE position is an addition for us. Uh we were pretty tight last year. We made it work with our current staff based on some electives and a number of uh sections at the elementary we needed to add. And so Tyler will be coming to us and and doing both uh really little kids and and the big kids. So we're excited to have Tyler as well. Uh some summer school situations there. Appreciate every year being able to do that. Uh Rhonda Curtis is a new school site for us. um
replacing Todd McKe who retired this year. Um and Josh Montgomery who is also here. Uh Josh we're really excited to have. Josh is a social studies uh teacher. I'm a little biased as a social studies teacher myself. So um Josh um actually is a former lawyer and kind of had a career change um in his heart and so we are excited uh to have him as he's playing replacing Mr. uh Brian Castell on the classified side on our re uh oh also just to bring note to you, you have lots of contract renewals there. So April is when all of the teacher contracts come up for renewal. Uh and there is you we have some that are up for one year, some that are two, some that are three. That's all related to our collective
bargaining agreement and where they fall into that process. And then we have some continuing contract, right? continuing contract you have to apply for after a certain number of of years in the district. That's all spelled out both in Ohio Reise Code and our collective bargaining agreement. So that is also a part of the certified agenda. On the classified side, we have uh Dave Zach retiring. We appreciate his his time here. Um and Marie Dro and Jamie Milner are resigning as well. So we appreciate their their work as well. Marie has definitely been an employee for a while. Jamie not quite as long but um for a while there. On the classified side, we have some parap professionals um and a permanent bus driver sub. Uh you'll notice, you might notice Michelle Springs's name there. She
actually was an intervention specialist for us for many years. Uh stayed home to start a family and is coming back as a library pair for us at Cornerstone. So, we're excited to have her. Um and also, uh just a couple hours old at this point, um our new head football coach is here, Raymond Leak. Uh Rey comes to us from Dton. um and uh where he uh had a very successful year last year and was at Cambridge before that. Um he um is a P license and also a principal license as well. But really excited for Rey to um kind of hit the ground running um as I think he is motivated and excited to do that and has a plan. And so we're really excited for Rey to to build his staff and meet
with the the kids and and get the ball rolling. So, um, excited to have that, um, completed and and, uh, ready to move forward. Um, moving on to some other things. Uh, we actually, uh, Mr. Muser appreciated him kind of remembering this because our graduation is so early this year. This is our last meeting before, uh, student graduation. So, in your list of, uh, names, um, we need to go ahead and approve at this point. Obviously, it's pending completion of their their final requirements. they don't get to skip school for the next month. Okay, this is um so we have uh that for you to approve. We have a new club as we always love our student led clubs, a business club proposal um that uh um with Mr. Keester will help support kind of
connected to our financial literacy um and so they'll meet you know before or after school. So excited about that. 607 non-renewal of supplemental contracts. That sounds bad. It's not. It's procedural every year. So supplemental contracts are one-year contracts by definition. And so every year they're non-renewed and then restarted. It doesn't mean that, you know, 90 plus percent of the people on that list aren't going to do the same jobs. Uh it just it just means that that's kind of a standard practice. So you'll see that uh the Paladin contract is just taking over for a current vendor. Data Serve has done our access control. So that's our swipe cards and things. Um uh they're no longer doing that. So Paladin is taking over for them. 180U we have this every year. Um they do a
substance abuse support group one uh one day a week. Um they also provide a survey that's used throughout the county to help determine funding and services. Uh so that's what the YASUS uh survey is. There's probably anotherou coming later as they also do our drug testing for our drug-free club and some of the other drug testing that I require at times for for students uh on specific situations. Um LEAP contract we use LEAP every year again just renewing our contracts for uh for the year for some of our students. They're out out of district place to leap. They're in Ripman. And then lots and lots of policies uh that are first reads um that are really aligned to a lot of the um kind of new laws, the parent the parent bill of rights. Uh
and you last year we had a lot of policies based on House Bill 33. This time it's really kind of uh based on that gives some parameters for um you know a little more freedom with expulsion exclusion. I'll be honest with you, I very rarely expel kids. We usually put them on plans uh that to help them. there's some graduation changes, requirements, and some other things that align with uh the parent bill of rights there. Um and also some um uh kind of adjustments based on things we already had in place like with the release time education and stuff that are now law that we um and then one more contract of ABC clinic and other out of district placement that we have every year as well. Um so a busy consent agenda, busy time
of year, but a lot of those are policies and remember as always um you'll have second needs next month on on these. Welcome to our I know we haven't voted yet. I wait I better wait till I say that. All right, Austin. Yes. Kleinhands Starer. Yes. Good. Right. Yes. Now, welcome. Yeah. excited to have you on. Congratulations to you. Yeah. Maybe the four of you could come down. We can shake your hands or something. Come on down. Yeah. Come on down. Come on down. Okay. And then you can stay for the rest of the meeting if you want to. There'll be no judgment if you don't want to. Or you can leave. Or you can leave. Hi Tyler. Jod Starer. Nice to meet you too. Welcome Joder. So nice to meet you. Welcome. Glad to
have you. Nice to meet you. Amy, glad you're here. Good to have you. Congratulations. High school. Okay. Good luck. That was one. Thank you. All right. Um, we need to consider a motion to approve the following then and now certificates. So moved. Second. So, I I have one then and now um certificate for you tonight. Sorry, let me get there. Um we had some work done on our welding booth um gas piping and um we had a PO in place, but it was uh a little bit more than what was anticipated. So, we had to do another purchase order. So, I'm bringing that to you for approval. This is very evil. Yep. Any questions? Nope. Okay. Good. Write. Yes. Starcher. Yes. Austin. Yes. Head. Yes. Okay. We need a motion to move on to the
superintendent's regular agenda. Motion to approve a three-year contract with Bush Busright for the purchase of transportation management system in the amount of 50,400 per year. Second. So this is going to replace our current routing system we use called transfinder. Um we uh it was we really even before you know Eric moved in we started kind of evaluating and wondering if we were uh really getting the services that we really needed with our our previous vendor. So we were kind of already starting to look at that and then with the transition from Mr. Seismore to Mr. Visa it was a really good time to dive into that. And so after a lot of investigation by Mr. Biso and his team, um they've made this recommendation. In summary, it'll do a lot of what we already have,
but more. So what it'll already do is it'll help with routing and and some things with like our that helps us keep track of service, you know, uh contracts and things like we do with, you know, when we put the oil in and things like that. But it also is a GPS system. Uh and it comes with an iPad for every vehicle. Uh, and that will then have the map on it, which is really is helpful even if you're just going to Cleveland to the same place, but it's really really help helpful when you're subbing on a bus route and it'll actually have the route laid out on the on the iPad in front of you. So, we're really excited about it. Um, it is a little more expensive than Transfinder, but also it comes
with a lot more, I think, that we'll provide for us. We felt like it was a really good time with a new supervisor and also a really good time in the standpoint that we're kind of in this middle of this redistricting that's going to be a lot of work for our transportation department. It's always something Kleinhens. Yes. Austin. Yes. Starcher. Yes. Good. Right. Yes. Okay, we need a motion to approve the first reading of the world language curriculum adoption which we heard about tonight. So moved. Sorry. Uh so first kind of same as always the you know some of the stuff you can see here if you are in our agenda and click on some of the not only quotes but on some of the um uh you know different things that you know uh
they shared tonight. You can also come down to central office if somebody wants to view the curriculum. It's a first read on purpose in May is when you would vote on a second time which would then trigger the purchase and implementation. And I do just thank them for coming tonight and and for we do uh you know they always do such a good job with all their curriculum adoptions. Starcher yes. Good rightight. Yes. Kleinhens Austin. Yes. Okay. We move on to 8.03. Motion to approve the suspension of the diversity task force and its corresponding scope of responsibilities. Second. All right. So try to talk a little bit about uh this recommendation to you. So um basically uh you know the the federal government um has really increased uh their interest in um what schools are
are doing or thought to be doing related to um DEI initiatives. Um technically I I don't know that we would have ever said we have anything that's officially DEI. We've had things that we've done that, you know, uh promote all students, uh provide opportunities, inclusion, um constantly focusing on kindness. However, as things have continued to progress, uh at this point, um we actually had what really led to to this is that had been happening the last few months, there had been some discussion on that, but without specific clarity for schools in the state of Ohio. Um the state of Ohio uh department of education and workforce sent something to me as superintendent of all superintendents last week that we had to you know certify that you know these these things were were not in in
place. Um uh basically it's all about potential funding loss right. So, um we in talking with our legal counsel uh reviewed uh the things that um might be in question and uh the really the two things that were kind of reviewed to recommend to to address are on here. Um you know, I I think what I want to want to say is that um you know, in terms of a daily um basis and and really what we do here, I don't I don't know that a lot is is changing. Um but at the same time, you know, when the diversity task force was created, uh there was, you know, some specific things that they were trying to accomplish that we continue to do always with, you know, but uh we we always hire the best
candidate, you know what I mean? We've never not not done that in any situation. Um but based on what we're hearing from really the legal interpretation and and uh the fact, you know, if you if you you know, we get about 11% of our funding from the federal government, that equates to over $6 million. Um, and you know, we use that to serve our kids. And that's what this is really about is ensuring that we continue to do that. And that's really all it is. This is not a a statement of of of belief. This is simply a recommendation that I feel responsible to ensure that I'm bringing to you what would ensure that we continue to get funding. Um the reason we are making it a suspension is because it we don't want to
view it as an elimination because there's a lot that could change um you know that that could allow us to you know uh bring it back together from that standpoint. Do want to want to make one other note. Um this doesn't change uh the things that we even we've even done in the diversity task force but that we do in general. Um, you know, uh, think about like our diversity and like our our calendar. Uh, you know, think about different months that we do to support and recognize different types of students. Like this month is exceptional, uh, exceptional students. You know, the students with with disabilities. All of that will and can continue. Um, and so again, I I um, this is just kind of a a formality right now that um, I think we
need to do to ensure that uh, we we don't risk a funding situation. So, we are um voting on this because it was board approved in 2017. 2017. Correct. I think if this wasn't at least from talking to our attorney, if it wasn't board approved to begin with, we probably wouldn't need board action on it. Okay. So, the reason there is board action is because there was the first time. So, the um that group that committee members um they'll never meet again. or will they continue to meet? Um they they never would be incorrect as a school district organizing. It would be on hold until um until we get different clarification um from from the state or or federal government. Procedurally, Gabe, um I mean you have to you have to report back to to
the to the state, right? what changes we've you don't have to you don't have to show them the changes. You have to certify by Friday at 11:59 um p.m. that uh we don't have anything in place that would prioritize any race over another or create a disadvantage which we we we've never felt that we've done. Of course, we would, you know, I don't think that's what any one of Worcester City Schools is about, but um we would have to clarify that and and do that. So, I have to do that later this week. I think it's ironic that that's happening on Good Friday. I think there's a purpose there and I I think it's um very sad. Yeah. And I I think one more thing I'd say on that, Jody, because you may if if
if you paid any attention to this, the um the federal government gave a week delay to make this the 24th. I guess just there's because there's some there's there's court review right now and potential injunctions, but nothing has happened. Our state did not change the deadline for Friday. Okay, that's helpful. And I mean, I think you said this, but I think it's important for us to reiterate. I mean it certainly doesn't minimize the work that that that committee has done to date. Um and I think it was about creating awareness for people with different thoughts, right? And um just you know saying how as a district do we bring people together and bring people to this district with different perspective, right? Um and making sure that we're representing all which is important to us and
like you said, we won't change that. Yes. Yes. And I did let uh the diversity task force members know this last uh let's see what last Friday. Yes. Um so they've known about this and and uh they're a great group of people and obviously disappointed but um understand I'll probably make some comment after we vote. Okay. Yes. Anything else? Anything else? No. All right. Good. Right. Yes. Star. Yes. Austin. Yes. Kleinheads. So, um, so really what we're dealing with here is with less than two weeks, um, districts like ours are being included in the quidd proquo to marginal marginalize employees, students, and communities. Stop your DEI, your diversity, equity, and inclusion practices or lose funding. Um, as she mentioned, our funding uh level is around 11%. That varies with different school districts, but no district
in the United States or in Ohio can afford to go without their federal fundings. Regardless if it's 3% 11%, it can't go without it. So equal treat equal treatment seems to only work when it's used to silence talk of race, identity, or equality. Um so when we train teachers to recognize bias, that's considered indoctrination. By the way, these are my thoughts and feelings, not so I'm not speaking for the board, but I'm speaking because I have the mic. Um, we can no longer include hiring practice that ensure that staff um the staff that kids see when they arrive at school look like them. To me, it's important when the kids walk through the doors that they see people who look like them. So nowadays, we we can no longer do that. Um, so we just
need to remember that equity ensures that all students have a fair shot shot and basically in my opinion that's our job. So that's my thoughts. And by the way, those thoughts are the same thoughts I have on the next policy that we're going to look at. I say this and by this unprecedented because we must get the funds to educate our students. I trust that the district is fully committed to fostering an environment. I voted yes superintendent completely and staff but I personally remain steadfast in my support of an inclusive meaningful purposeful choice. I appreciate both Rick and and Joyy's comments. Um, very well said and and um supportive of those comments as well. Okay, let's move on. Um, motion to approve policy 2111. It's a revision to our parent and family engagement program. So
moved. This is based on the same concept and discuss uh that that we just had in reviewing our policies. Uh there was just you know a recommendation to make an additional sentence uh which again we would um I think inherently do we're not going to do anything to um disfavor any any any race or group of students. that's the opposite of what we're about completely in all situations in Worester City Schools, but uh it was recommended that we would include that. So, this is um we feel that between these two things, these are the only things that currently um would would be a question of whether or not we would have an issue that would relate to that funding change. Comments Austin. Yes. Kleinhens. Yes. Starcher. Yes. Good. Right. Yes. Thank you guys. All right.
So, we're moving on to our last item here. Last item. All right. An expensive one. Oh, really? Yeah. Okay. Um motion to approve the resolution of urgent necessity and contract agreement for the replacement of the roof at cornerstone. Second. So I I I think a couple of different things I want to share about this. So first uh um what what is this? Where is this? This is the uh roofing section um of the gymnasium and uh a portion of the portion of the cafeteria kitchen. Okay. Um we've been trying to patch it for a while. Um and got to the point where um our roofer who does a lot of good work for us, it's like it it just it just can't be patched anymore. Obviously, we have a bond issue on the ballot that
would not have us in the building in a few years if passed. Um and so, you know, wanting to spend this kind of money is is not always the the most fun thing to do, but it's the right thing to do as we do have to continue to keep the building in in in good shape and usable. And I also think it's an important thing as you know I think that sometimes you know as you know there's been a lot of discussion about this proposal that we have you know out there um is what kind of maintenance is done on that building and I think this is another example of you know there there is a lot of money spent on cornerstone regularly as there is all of our buildings but uh cornerstone included and
because of just the nature of the size and age of it some of those often can be uh quite pricey. So, the reason it's urgent necessity is once we got the word within the last week or so that it was not going to be able to be repaired any any longer, um we've got to we've got to fix it. It's above the $75,000 threshold. So, we have to prove to you that we don't have time to go out to bid. So, that's what the urgent necessity is. And then the quote is on there with it as well. So depending on our future, it's kind of like spending good money on bad project. I mean, it has the potential, you know, but at the same time, I think, you know, um, if we would not be
in the building in a few years, I know there is interest in the building being used in some capacity. I think if somebody moved into that area of the facility, um that would be at least one less thing to worry about in their in their kind of renovation project. This is this might be a silly question. This is a portion of the roof. Yeah. So, this is not even close to the whole thing. Bas basically uh a portion of the gymnasium and a portion of the of the kitchen, right? Yeah. If you've been in recently, you've kind of seen we've got some nice creative situation where we've got like buckets and then uh hose that then take the water down to another bucket. Um that's what this would be Austin. Yes. Good. Right. Yes. Starter.
Yes. Kleinh. Okay. Uh new business. I don't believe I see any old business. We don't have any. Uh do we have any uhbody wants to do public partic participation on non-aggenda items? I don't see any. So today we have um Tommy Wilds who's here to um share with us some things about uh Worcester High School. All right. He's a junior, right? Okay. We appreciate you coming, Tommy. Yeah. Then you'd be back next year. Baseball, softball, lacrosse, and tennis team. Former High School director Chuck Cooper came to speak to the student athlete leadership team last month. In this meeting, he emphasized the power of making a positive impact in others lives. The student athlete leadership team will be holding their next meeting tomorrow morning. Broadway performer Alex Brightman is coming to speak to the drama club
tomorrow. Mr. Hin will be interviewing Mr. Brightman where he will walk him through his career. The science club will be participating in the club spirit week and have their final meeting of the year on May 1st. NAACP got to attend a conference in Cleveland called the Civil Rights Advocacy Training Institute, also known as the CRAI. They're also holding their position election day. They're also hosting a pickle ball tournament on May 24th as well. Uh, student council is currently working on the PBIS reward day, the spirit week coming up in three weeks, and also a communitywide movie night sponsored by WA on May 3rd. They just finalized the election candidates for the student council in the 2025 2026 school year. They would like to specifically note that a change that they are looking to make for
the next year is a brand new attendance policy. Besides these main projects, they're looking to do a lot of small school day activities to keep motivation up in the building as we closer to the end of the school year. You say that the track team beat Norway? Yeah, both of them. Boys and girls both, I believe. So, really? All right. Good. is really good. I know they were smaller, but they are really good. And they're at a try meet, I think. Is that Saturday? They were at a meeting. They're in a meet tonight. I know that. I think so. Is that in West? Yes. I picked up on one. You talked about an attendance policy. Is that for the student council? Okay. For them to They're trying to kind of fulfill their uh like actionable
attendance policy. Okay. needs. Okay. Very good. Not for coming to school and things like that. Yes, sir. We do have a policy on that. You can rewrite that for. So, all right. Thank you. It was a great update. Great. Great. You did good. Was that your first public speaking thing that you've done in front of all these people? You did good. Thank you. It's good. Yeah. If you keep coming back, we won't we won't make you be hating we won't make you be hating me for that long since Okay. So, we're going to move on to future meetings. Um, it looks like we have a uh board work session on uh May 12th and then followed by two regular meetings. One on uh May 20th and then one on June 17th. Those are all right
