001what okay [Music] um they all came i'm yes um amazing no you um so this morning when i looked it was okay don't look at that [Music] okay all right so good evening everybody welcome to the march uh edition of the hill springs school board um just a second i just want to point out one thing we had a related edition today the board will be going into an executive session at the end of the meeting um okay here magnus here turn here we have a quorum and header 1.3 is the purple of glossary so we both have a regular board um purchase from the history of space they are they are proposing to purchase them for the district okay so do we not want to so and okay all right turner yes gary rios
002yes okay yes magnus uh um so this is is uh say who you are it's a new one it's right here all right well my name's david know turner a year i have to come and say something so it's time for me to say something one day last week i was they came across an article with a liberal website box titled the live book banning is back the fight over books and schools is part of the much bigger struggle revealing where conservatism is today i saw it and i thought i live in a liberal town like yellow springs and we're not cedarville or texas our school system never considered bailly books wise and responsible adults for our students to be exposed to a wide range of information experiences ideas and to encounter difficult issues head
003on to enable them to understand important complex things in various angles students here learn to have intelligent conversations instead of being limited to the ideologies they've been fed they'll learn the world is not as simple as a political dilemma they learn some things are difficult to deal with but they're not weak thinking of this comfortably i heard from the credible source the same day some books written by great african-american writers females and others were being removed from high school classes here because few students complained i've been trying to find out the details on this whether or not i don't know that i felt my help to say something about it if it is true not only the complaints are said to be about a word among other things prominently a lot of music that students
004listen to the irony was inescapable i'm glad our school system would never banned books or straight away from covering difficult stupid difficult subjects with our students because they're fearless hello thank you so much for the time undercover it's very busy um my name is megan bachman i'm the assistant director of center for general practice um as you know we have a 128 acre farm um township we do a lot of great collaborations together we have education demonstration research one of our educators is also here emily cobair so um we'd love to kind of do this annually because we just have so many partnerships going on and we just want to make sure the board is aware so first of all just to say like tremendous gratitude to hillsborough we are so honored to work with
005talented and excited educators who are constantly coming up with new ideas to use our space because about soil and agriculture so um also so much support from the administrators and you know the students too who are very forward-thinking teachers are doing a good job with them um but they're also coming up with their own majors and so it's really really cool too um so just to start with the student-led project you may have heard on i'm not going to say um much because i know the students are also going to be coming to you um but just to say this goes back like two to three years ago actually the students that really thought that they wanted to make a change was not going to landfill so right now there's a really great pdl going
006on in 6th grade supported by those teachers to look for that situation so again i don't want to say too much but concurrently agraria is developing um compost operation we got a grant without license and um we could uh take the waste of military schools and we're excited to do so i'm gonna have to come out and see what happens see how um the second thing i just want to mention about is that like path we get a lot of questions about this we have a lot of students and classes that want to come out to a barrier and walk out but we have not been able to build that background so um as you know we got a half million dollar grant um from ohio in 2020. um which keyboard is extremely supportive of
007this um selling three acres at the high school to the village and we're finally going public with it because we're literally options so we might actually ask the schools we see a lot of kids walking a big um and just to say we're not also we're not just working with existing educators we're also snatching up some of your retired educators um desi nickel is working on this tiny course um curriculum for us and with us that we're going to spread to other schools so this is a great solution for climate change and this is a good opportunity to say that like yellow springs is actually kind of a great island and i'm a partner pilot partner what you should say because we're able to do a lot with you because you do see um and
008just two more things that i would mention and pass it on emily um about two years ago at the growing green conference again right before gilbert um there's a great conversation going on between us um and i know there's tremendous barriers but we're here to start that conversation whenever you're ready um you know everything that's happened you're kind of realizing that kids are needing more support so we're kind of developing some trauma care practices category on and we're also contemplating ways to offer that to the larger community including educators and leaders in the school district as well as parents so i just wanted to let you know that um we're kind of curious where people are and support they need and we have a expert now on staff in circles you know we also in
009addition to the farm have a site hi everybody um and some of the school initiatives that i'm excited to talk to you today about what is the budget you might have seen me outside meeting on tuesdays and wednesdays for the kids uh we're really excited to have our own cluster so that we can pick up school uh kids from school correctly and take them out to the it is so amazing to see how much team they're able to let off how much they're able to sink into the land at the beginning and then by the end they're like oh okay um so gay for the buses and thank you so much for helping us make that happen so uh a couple of other big projects that were getting going one that started you know the
010big map out um maybe some of you haven't don't know um but it was a response to covid and getting kids outside doing something every week that they put on a map so they would go out and look at water and then put that on they look at the boundaries um and it's a 25-week curriculum that sorry has championed and can be amazing at and we're now bringing it to the kindergarteners we have been all here uh she was doing it to all grade levels live well mainly back to the third and then this year is really we're working with the kindergarten teachers and now the first graders are coming on so we're excited for the last few weeks and then people talk to something that's um in the future and in the works but
011what we're doing is as it sounds think of a 10 by 10 area where students get to come and map essentially another mapping project what is going on there testing the soil over time and seeing the seasonal changes in that 10x10 area we'd love to have them be able to walk or fight using the bike path to there 10 by 10 feet yeah and currently we have interest from mr margie over in high school but this is a project that can be opened up to any grade level but right now we're focusing on the heist and then finally going back to the big map help um we're going to be hosting a teacher training on site at agraria in early august to help um get teachers even more into the rhythm of the map out
012getting comfortable with taking kids outside i know there's a lot of challenges to taking kids outside i've worked a lot with teachers doing that i love it it's my wheelhouse i think that's about it for me yeah we have a another site there for offices on um is i think you want to feel like you're going because you want to be able to understand all right so esports is something probably two and a half years ago i was reading an educational publication and they had a university that's offering full scholarships for esports and anytime i see full scholarships it catches my attention i think you know if that could benefit our students and that was really my first exposure to it so we started looking into it really last year during the pandemic as an
013idea when everybody was remote something that students could potentially do from home but connect with their peers and students are gaming anyway so why not take advantage of that ultimately it wasn't something we could get off the ground as quickly as we wanted last year so this year mr irik and i revisited it and we ended up reaching out to washington courthouse city schools so they have an established esports team program um and we met with uh the gentleman who runs esports ohio which is it's actually a tech coordinator he runs all of it on his lunch period um just it's like a passion-led thing that he's built this network through the state of ohio so we met with him and it's powerful it's completely free to the kids to play it's free for the
014students to go to the school to enroll so from a call standpoint it's accessible and after meeting with him the key number for us in that meeting is that around 75 percent of the students who participate in esports it's the first organized school activity that they do so for us light bulbs are going off of so esports ultimately stands for electronic sports and it's really not sports related um the eight games that you see there are the games that are played so it's played monday through thursday they have two games per night and it's a seven week season so you have a fall season in the spring season so if you're gonna play rocket league you may play every monday for seven weeks and as a school we could have i think up to three
015teams play properly rocket league is a three-person team um so we could have up to nine kids playing rocket league and they would play every whatever for seven weeks and then like super smash brothers would play a different night of the week um so so that's really we started mentioning it kind of informally to our students and it was immediate the energy was immediate yes we want to do that and our kids are playing teams anyway so why not have them play in an organized way and organize fashion that connects it back to the school and it would allow us to compete with other schools across the state last year they started a district tournament in the state tournament so you could actually be a state champion robert lee player state champion fortnite player and
016ohsaa just uh ohsa just announced probably six weeks ago that they are going to do like a trial next year with esports and then with the hope of the following year the esports west via ohsaa recommends support um so a pretty cool thing um like i said cater to a different demographic and student um there's there's you don't have to be athletic to play esports you can still thrive which you know for some students there are barriers of oh i don't have the coordination with my basketball volleyball the esports thing and it takes a different skill set um once we have the equipment so that the upfront cost was there but once we have it it's it's low cost for no cost for the district to run and for their students and then it can
017be structured as a club sport or a class we see it structuring it as a sport that would be after school and the beauty of it there's eight different games but we don't have to play all eight games so if we would want to start out with just two games we could play two games before so there's really it's really flexible and enhancing the implementation um what we saw when we went over to the washington courthouse though is it develops a following it's not just the four students that are playing but there's like camaraderie and i guess a team atmosphere for everyone to go in and support so so it was really neat um the esports of ohio provided the statistic that over 13 universities in ohio are now offering esports scholarships so the some
018of the universities are building freestanding sports complexes um just for their students to come and play so it's pretty neat and then is there one more slide okay so so we are we are in the process of uh running a community foundation brand we're looking at an initial cost of probably around 30 to 40 000 so some of that obviously is a district we will assume uh but we're hoping to get some grant um funding to help with that we want to do a renovation of the llc so we looked at different spaces in our school and right now the old teachers lounge in the far back corner is vacant oh that might be a great location but it's so far removed from everything that we thought it would get lost so we wanted to
019make it more central to the school so we're going to do a minor renovation of the library just moving to bookshelves painting the walls putting in the equipment and furniture and nothing seeming to fit and then we'll be purchasing six gaming computers and then three nintendo switches for the super smash brothers um that's the only platform that we played on and then getting some some basic furniture to support at the desks the gaming chairs those types of things so and our hope is to have this up and running into the fall season this year so we're pretty excited about it so so a lot of them are not sports sports games so rocket league is you're driving cars playing soccer in like an arena but that's the only one that's really even sports related the
020rest of them are more strategy yeah there are several multiplayer games that are listed on that um a lot of first person third person view where you kind of iterate between them so it's very areas um and they're very excited about it it's it's a quality space and they feel like the students are developing relationships so this is happening um a lot of it runs through like there's a communication like there's an e-sports channel in discord so like not all of this course but it would be like a specific channel where they can practice football but when you have the matches you have to be at the team location so then that means located in the building and how accessible we need to get actually hardwired lines and no wi-fi for those devices well i
021mean i we would treat it as a sport i mean the same way sports and you know we have practice and the practice would be like in our practices a night so it would be we would treat it the same way unfortunately what they do i mean it's the same thing as you know playing soccer practicing soccer but i know that video games there are also academic expectations with our sports so i think for me i'm of an age so when i watched it i had absolutely no idea what they were doing or how they were doing it and it was you know it's a bit frightening to me but it was very engaging and i think maybe hit on something and that is it really builds some skills that kids need today that that
022we as adults may not understand and i don't this is not my background but i've read that in the military and other industries this type of training occurs all the time and so i think if we can give our kids those skills um that's great and there's high interest in terms of privacy and security you know as the team gets smart on how to take care of yourself and the students here and they can they can teach other other children um other students in the school of high school and this is a nice carrot to help teach that stuff i would just add it's possible and i know there's only so many hours in the day that i i could see uh students who are interested in some of the traditional sports and esports and
023if it's possible that they may be able to participate in both i think that's the ideal if there are you know it's not directly from each other but i know there's only so many hours so so i mean i would say our high school boys soccer team they play rocket league every night so when they heard that rocket was one of these games like they were like the group that was between the island because and that's what you can you can ask people like yeah he's the best player in school there's so it's like you can see they already know who i mean they're into it and i'm sure that we have students and many of those other groups who are the same and tune it to your point our kids are spending way too
024much time doing this stuff already i mean honestly so like the idea if we can channel them into a healthy structure environment and they're playing again with people that they know and against people i mean it's a i guess a little safer environment you know it's a good venue to engage them and we know they need to learn the skills of digital hygiene i think participating there's obviously interest in you know in the workplace in this skill for schools to offer [Music] yes when we were kids our parents would tell us to turn off the video games they're not gonna do anything for us all right section 2.5 um i'll talk a little bit about her um i just wanted to share we did have our normal college program march 7th um so the other
025thing i wanted to share was about our federal programs which we get federal monies there is a new system and new requirements from the state that to do those requirements it's called insteps and there was an assessment that we it's a very long assessment and we're assigning different sections based on data in the state so we have to kind of look through that and then um and this is supposed to align how we get underneath so that's just some might be um it covers everything congratulations curriculum school climate if it comes it touches on a variety based on our data it is extensive we don't answer every question buildings are assigned certain items in several areas all right um so uh i think a few months ago we talked about amelia and delia as national
026merit semifinals they are now national park finalists so that's very exciting i mean obviously of our top students it's exciting to see these two students i met both of seventh graders not as seniors who have accomplished so much and um we're going through graduation stuff right now looking at progress towards graduation and to see you know the accomplishments that these students have achieved in their time here from hcg sport from an academic standpoint it's just really impressive but then to know them as students they're equally impressive so so it could not be too nice for kids to be named finals so um the next thing is it's just a spring extracurricular um quick update we're kind of in the wall where we're just getting ready to start spring competition um similar to winter we have
027some of the highest numbers we've ever had so we're in a spot where we're i'm trying to get additional baseball uniforms additional softball uniforms so we really struggled in the pandemic last year with numbers and this year we've really rebounded with again more kids coming out and participating in those extracurriculars and then the last thing shrek the musical in there uh that is set to uh go may 8th or 6th through the 8th at the robinson center so we kicked around venues again we're still struggling not having a venue here in town that's viable for such a large cast we ultimately decided on the robeson center just because it's it's a great opportunity to give our kids an experience in an actual theater with high quality equipment and large enough that we can um all
028of our people can attend without filling in you know capacity necessarily so so safely so we are excited about that um we have rehearsals going on uh daily so so that's going well and then the last thing i just want to point out our bowling program um is in our sixth season this year we just completed our sixth season and last year we took a big step forward in bowling and this year we took a bigger step forward so we had many firsts this year so max sturgeon he qualified for state and went and represented bell springs at the state bowling tournament to qualify in the districts he pulled a if he would have hold that same at state he would have won so so the winning score state was 684. so he ended up
029he rolled at a 536 at state which still his dad was saying that they have this like assessment where when he went he has a bowl and they would put things on the lane and he hit the bowl and he hit like 28 out of 32 of them within an eighth of an inch and like they had them all different places so it didn't matter how many pins he knocked down it was just a matter of if he had that kind of control so he's he's going on a scholarship he won the metro buffet conference part of it um and was a co-holder of the year for the metro buckeye conference um but then the other thing is our team actually qualified for districts as a team so that's the first time that our team
030has qualified um so so we've seen we've got a lot of students particularly our junior class this year who took a huge step forward so so even though we're losing max to graduation i think we're going to come back and look forward to another strong season next year i hope he comes back well he was talking about that he's planning on coming back during these breaks to help you i encourage everyone to go there's there's a different energy in the world you might see any other and i mean it's it's fine like it's just a fun environment so i do encourage you in um grove city and it was first of all it was crowded really crowded but it was the atmosphere in that illinois and then you know just like it's absolutely fascinating so
031he joined this last year as a tech coach and he i you know a little bit last spring and tried to convince him and he decided to come this morning and he's been great so it's been great for him i think getting to know the kids in a different capacity a great experience okay no fun um we started off the month with read across america day it was started by the national education association i believe in the late 90s originally it was on march 2nd i think because it was dr seuss's birthday but they've really kind of gotten away from that recently but it's really just a day to you know bring awareness to the importance of reading and of course we do that every day but it's a fun day to celebrate reading and
032we had a few guests in um to read to the students and i think the guests really had fun doing it i asked them to bring their own book and then students were able to have a little q a after um and it really doesn't matter you know what they're reading as long as they are you know reading it could be lyrics to a song and that's what i did with the sixth grade students um it's just really important that they continue to read and have interest in reading and i just kind of shared with them when i was younger um picking up books was not really one of my favorite things to do um but i really enjoyed reading the lyrics to songs and back then they were on the cd covers and i
033would do that so um i read the lyrics to the song lean on me and then we just have a discussion about moving into middle school and how they are gonna have to kind of lean on each other and and then they had the opportunity to listen to the song so it was a great experience and i just thank everyone for volunteering to come in and read to the students students really enjoyed it our fourth grade students had the first field trip of the year on a bus so they were really excited about this field trip it is part of their pbl in fourth grade and they researched all the inventors that were from dayton and were lucky to be in an area where we have so many and then they took a trip to
034carillon park and they got to tour carillon park again they had a wonderful time and this all comes back to their innovation and invention um pbl so i actually had an opportunity to go into the fourth grade classroom a few days after they took their field trip and one of their lessons um was to have this scenario where there was a truck driving down the highway and marbles spilled everywhere and then they had um different kind of you know cups and a ruler and string they had to build an apparatus to get the marbles off of the highway quickly so that was kind of a follow-up to the field trip and again the students are the students appreciated the field trip and they are really having fun with this community i didn't realize i realized
035they are um and the last thing that we have um on here is we are kind of partnering with um care the center for anti-racist education and stanford children leadership center and this is something that our teachers are participating in and it's district-wide so this is not just mills lawn with the high school as well and we you know we are aware of the impacts of systemic racism and we are aware of inequities um it's our responsibility to kind of confront some of these injustices that we are seeing and we you know we have our classic novels and we have our famous authors and just because they have always been taught in school doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be taught today is it relevant does it represent the diverse population that we are
036teaching so teachers have the opportunity to go through their teaching resources it does not have to be a novel it could be an article that they are using in their classrooms it could be a video that they are using in their classrooms it could be a ted talk that they're using in their classrooms but really what we are trying to do is get the teachers to kind and this care provides teachers with a review tool and if you look up here it gives you all of the things that teachers will be able to go through this educational or teaching resource and kind of evaluate whether it is something that we really should use now we're kind of on the groundbreaking end of this because there are other districts that are doing this and eventually all
037of these articles and all these novels will have a score and if a teacher wants to use this resource kind of to supplement their curriculum or even if it's a story in their curriculum they can type that in and it'll be able to store and they'll say yes absolutely use this or use this with caution you might need to supplement this or this is probably not a good idea to use in the classroom so the teachers that go on and the teachers in middle school and the high school are kind of starting this and they will create 75 reviews um probably starting after spring break and because some of my teachers have started already but um after spring break they will do 75 reviews district y but also that is correct that is correct and
038it can include um our district adopted curriculum so it doesn't just have to be you know a novel that you know we can really go through and make sure that we are providing students with you know and one of them said thank you [Laughter] all right so that ends our administrative reports and then we have a great time report favorite part of my school board thanks mr steve mcqueen i actually wanted to start by someone asked me why is it for the last couple of years i've never come and had presentations like this before and it's because only this year whether we're starting this january are we now going to see students in the building building doing what they do thursday after school so that they can show us during this meeting and that's where
039we're going to see every single thing so if that's been a question on your mind as to why uh one of my presentations in the past something like this was because we just started uh because it's in after a while so this month it was the auto collision uh part of the building that we went to and they showed us what they do at first we went inside and they did a brief presentation um they mentioned things like they now have 30 percent a 30 percent female participation which is the highest they've ever had um uh yes so we started with uh welding and we got opportunities to do all the different things but they showed us sort of what they would do uh or what is the first step and one of the first
040steps um so buffering and standing out uh and getting things to be as smooth again uh oh that way okay that was the only one i had for there buffalo but these would be the instruments and so this was the practice i was even able to use a buffer i thought i had that picture in there but uh and it goes from my intellect of adding the same mixture of stuff flattening that out and then it was sort of buffering into the sugar so then they had a uh okay oh awesome so there's three on here so then spray the spray paint section and we started with the machine called a sim spray and it's all virtual once you're inside uh you just there's a room and there's just a door and you have this
041little apparatus here you spray and um the colors depending on the colors just showing how if you're too close to too far um if you're doing it just right and if you do it correctly you'll have a fully clean door if um and then i was able to use this which is just water into it but it's just to give you the feel of whatever next one hopefully we'll go back to the so this is a good idea or a good example of um fully done over with airbrush as well and we'll get to the airbrushing part next uh well something in the spring painting when there was just we got to see how they did the spreading which was really helpful and then at the end so this would be an example of what
042they do here um here there's examples of as you can see how it's a hydrant um really because they want them to get as creative as possible because they also for the more creative ones some people really like doing more of the fixing the car aspect of it where other people are much more into the design aspect of uh you know what do you want what fire coming out of this one so depending on sort of what it is really like on for the world creative ones are just like yeah just felt like uh yes so here's some more uh just more detail as to what they would do how much to take this actually took um the style they talked about the difficulty of actually making it work that was pretty interesting and yeah
043so here would be another this is sort of for people when they come in if they i had ideas or maybe didn't have an idea right you see this she's like oh yeah and this was really interesting because i wish i had another place with the original picture it was only on the slideshow so this is my picture of this old model uh gas pump but if you were able to see your picture it was just absolutely amazing they explain how they have to get help from their electrical groups and get all the wires to work um of course it's not functional but uh but for the lighting and all of that it will be nice you can go on facebook to the green county conversion page you can also go to green dot c
044degree sorry free g i ccc.com and uh the green room which is the restaurant that the culinary students are doing is open from wednesday or friday from 7 00 to noon and then the salon uh which is at the conversion rate is open from new to two i was going to put their actual prices here level i'd rather just tell people go and go and be able to compare but very decent prices he and that was another part of one of the it's actually the longest also by this point yeah at this point it's just being uh no i'm pretty sure you can actually i don't know i'm not gonna answer that because uh i don't would you happen to know there's still accepting applications um right after they get their first letters for the
045early accepted students yeah of course always like any other questions i want to thank my sleeves and so much for it sounds like i said we're gonna work this out thank you i just requested the board uh graciously accepted a donation of 300 to high schools as far as from so you don't have to but we go ahead and push them in a second all right any questions turner yes yeah reviews yes okay yes magnus yeah okay um i'm going to keep it quick today the main thing that's pointing out from we have like two peaks during the year august and february are there any questions from what you saw in the february reports but to take questions i'll go first i see that there's a drop in so that we had spent almost 180
046000 last year you know what it means in the purchase services um and that's just where we're at as far as purchase services right now um yeah so purchase services is one of those things there's a lot of different things in there um um [Music] um so um i don't know of any supply chain issues i know a lot of times principles will do you you buy the school supplies like pens and pencils and everything and you sort of hold back on your budget and i you know the library and stuff so some of those things that are like okay but you know what are the things we don't have to have at the end of the year um okay gary rios yes okay um there is one certificate of availability yeah there was there
047was some difficulty i learned about the difficulty okay next is a um an amended budgeted purpose statement for the drama club so shrek is coming up and shrek is expensive uh um so part of the expense also though is all setting some of the other things you would pay for so services so well that looks like a big expense it's actually offsetting some other expenses that come with and then the final thing is just an increase of appropriations the 200 um from um yeah so that's the way that public accounting goes is it doesn't matter how much cash you have budgeted the other attachments are there for the public um so we went on break students were gone yesterday they've been a week without mass we did that for lots of reasons which i spelled
048out in this update additionally in addition to the change from the cdc and their county reporting the ohio department of health changed all requirements for k-12 schools i have listed those for you i want just my updated students yes i have listed those for you so schools are no longer required to have a case reporting system schools are no longer required to have a designated code schools are no longer required to notify parents of positive cases or report cases to their local health department unless we do people have asked are we going to still do these things my answer is yes or no we are not going to do these things because quite honestly these folks aren't exhausted um but if you notice today on our website we have close to our minds even though
049we are not required be here the nurses are now kind of assuming their home that jeff i would have um so as parents communicate to us again you know through the minor years this world will be different but we only know if you tell us so but generally our parents are good and they do they call them and say hey you know my child is sick or my child is tested positive um so we will continue to notify if there's a connection um that i think hopefully we'll answer a question we are not throwing everything out the window because we know there may be some time this year next year nobody might have to go back to next um but based upon the data and this community has been very good about following the science
050and if we're going to follow the science we're going to continue to call it scientific so what the science says now as of today so again this is all my update but that first uh table is our numbers for this week nothing at middle school high school one positivity goes on three quarter teams one district staff positive that's changed by one a very little movement from last week the next table is ohio's county cases per 100 000 this is david uh um in green county is quite well 68.7 the next one is the cdc carbon 19 county check um green county and then finally the last one again i really have not recorded this before but i wanted to share this and that graph comes from the ohio department of education because every week for
051the past year i have had the report to new superintendent street every week every school district reports to their the state designated the esc's as the local data point and so as of march 10th you can see in ohio 609 districts 608 were five days in person um and then mass policy of 609 districts uh 588 had mass optional for all students so i just provide this as a point of reference we are not throwing caution to the wind we are we are not jeopardizing everyone's health i i hope that folks appreciate the fact that we do take our student health and our staff health and the health of our community so one last thing and i know um two board members board member counseling and okay i've approached the village about wastewater management i'm
052going to tell you that's great that is not a screen purview and so if something comes of that that has to route through the village and green county health and the ohio department but as of right now i think you're doing okay i've been in low buildings students are masking if they choose the math there's been no um nobody's been ostracized for the choice they made about that but i just want to make sure that you're around that and i want to make sure that the public is aware of that um and i feel like the principal has been feeling to china i think honestly it's a credit to our students um so i'm glad right now we're in a place where the numbers are low uh there's very few things going through the school
053which is wonderful it's like a good time to rethink about this especially as the reporting is changing at the national level unstable here so my question for you is what process or metrics are you looking at in terms of monitoring coverage you know when it will be time to have a discussion about investing well so all of those metrics yeah and i'm just going to be perfectly honest when i was honest and transparent last year and put numbers out i heard about that all year and i've heard about that in not so nice kids even when the governor said i'm not going to give you vaccines unless you go back you know people were not coming we are not a health organization so we are going to look for that we always contact free county
054county college you know jeff can call the iphone call me i don't call melissa so and if these numbers pick up what we would do is say hey here's what we're seeing what would your recommendation yeah just so you know green county public health will never tell us what to do because in ohio as in the other 49 states we're all about local control and states rights and other rights and so they're not going to say you should do these they will say you know what you're seeing might be just a myth or yeah um because we are just not qualified to do that i mean i think this is a credit to my team and i call that all these people in this room every teacher in this district um for really making it
055through the past two years and all of our colleagues in ohio and elsewhere because this has been hard so as we as we get to this point now where there's like wow we are watching it it's not like we're not watching it so free accounting goes up to me you know i do watch the news every morning i know what's happening in europe i know what's happening in the uk that's happening in europe in ukraine right now i have to manage this so um it's hard for me to say a number let me because you're saying somebody's gonna pounce and say you said this and i don't know that that's the right way to approach this you know i think it's lots of factors um i haven't had many emails from parents um you know
056and i want to make just another comment about general health i'm going to speak personally because i'm fighting a real sinus issue that i had when i went to the conference last week so i think if the parents see our teachers learning their knowledge just go home here we there's lots of factors around that i mean we're in the miami valley you know the ohio river valley it's just terrible terrible airport so i think we just have to look at things and take it day by day my goal their goal is good morning right and then and then that's know what you think about what do we need to do okay so my follow up on that because you mentioned the wastewater monitoring is that yes um i reach out to the relationship having that
057conversation with them i know that right now springfield and they are releasing their wastewater monitoring their uh which is an opportunity for us because they can't give us a heads up that's something so here here's understood if it's what divorce wants me to do i can tell you that on ohio there are numbers there's the wastewater stove i've talked to her i don't know if bell springs is in there yet again but but i'm asking you is that what you want me to do with my time to start recording that to my parents and families about music it's available we can look at it but again you know i'm not a scientist i'm not a health care professional but i have read it okay so it says that then what the health department and the
058cdc don't know they said yeah it might it might give you some insight into what's going to happen but there's no enforcement so let's say it appears in the village wastewater joshua says terry you can't do anything about it okay it's not it's not um now we have to go back to the next required for me it's just i think it's it's kind of one of those older ones that has happened the past two years and there's so much information you know we don't know what to do with it we try to use it all and my question is again i will work for it if that's what you want it is on ohio.gov um i just don't know in reporting it what am i gonna say about it i'm not i i was not
059suggesting that you report it because like you say the problem but uh i would like you to consider it if they see several metrics going up and this one that's true honestly it's a shame that we're still not all vaccinated so we spend all this time talking about vaccinations and talking about what we can do and the most effective thing we can do is get a passage so that is not eligible to be investigated yet because the kids on the fight can help you so we i'm talking about everyone eligible who has no exception who has not gotten their vaccine it's not here i mean this is a this is why other countries are more highly vaccinated than we are we choose to not do it yeah one of the things that i'd like to
060put out and recommend because i know this is one of the concerns this is this is some of the testimony that we've gotten from families in the district um today on an npr podcast uh a1 uh they talked about the topic what does the return to normal mean for the in your compromise and i thought that it's a it's a 30 minute podcast and i feel like there's a lot of really good information in that podcast from the perspective of people who are in new of our population but this is still an important part of our population and um you know this they had basically one day to prepare for what might be the change i think that um parents appreciated a lot of this student their their their fellow students remain masked while we're
061working through this transition because um there are students who who were working through anxiety about about switching from i mean let's remember that the 22nd the week of the 22nd of january was one of the highest peaks in uh in the pandemic that we've seen that's just about that's less than eight weeks ago right so the it's part of this is helping people make the transition and it's not our transition back to normal and especially that transition back to normal for the immediate compromise because um there's one thing to appreciate is i took my mask out for a moment because i want people to hear me but i feel like masks are still very important especially the and the the kn and the n masks the end masks is really good at keeping people from
062touching the disease um decay and mass reduce the risk of catching the virus by i think over 80 so the quality of the mask really matters for the individual and additional and and the vaccine reduces the risk for a person that they catch it right because they found that the viral load is pretty much as high with vaccinated people so what were is moving to a test and treat protocol and the problem is with especially for the immune process we talked about this really well in the podcast is that there's a couple of very effective treatments that you know they only have about one percent of the supply that's needed for the population so we're so for the immune carbon it's not time to return to normal and so i i kind of got on
063me feel like i got a bit of a surprise but i really feel that half hour podcast is really good very good um and so i i think that might be so so folks um who are interested in that um i'll try and uh i'll try and give that that link back to the appropriate source um but again the name of that is what does returning and that's that's one thing that i i'd like us to have a discussion about is what what as a collective um we can do to um to keep the community safe for this community which is you know part of our decision yeah um i know that we're still in your report but because you've asked questions and we're having this discussion i just wanted to share i think that
064if we could all just remember to frame our discussions about this with kindness that would probably be the most appreciated thing that we could do for each other because this pandemic has been excruciating it has been painful we have suffered losses uh the uncertainty daily barrages of decisions and decision-making that has led to a level of stress in all of our lives we're definitely in our teachers and our educators lives um so i just want to acknowledge that um and i think we have as a district relied on science to chart a path forward and we've done incredibly well with that i just want to remind us that to um i am not a part of the board asking the schools to do a certain level of additional monitoring or a certain level of additional
065data driven assessment on this area i do not believe that it is in our best interest to burden our schools with that additional load at this point in time the state of ohio our federal government and administration burdened our schools throughout this pandemic by making intentional decisions instead of reopening our schools we continue to struggle with making these decisions on district levels and the state of ohio prioritized reopening bars and restaurants if you can recall in that last early you know uh summer of 2020 over reopening our schools and providing our schools with the resources that they needed to reopen so let's just remember that we have placed a tremendous burden on our educators and our families both our children and our seniors have um just deserve credit tremendous credit and i just have immense
066appreciation for all of you this incredible resiliency that has been shown in the face of a public health crisis of which none of us have lived here before in our lifetime that has been this last two years i just want to bring some perspective to all of us as we think about this it's been unprecedented and our children and our teachers and our wider community uh we have been responding they've been responding with heart with grit with grace and i just want to thank you all because it has been through that that we are where we are and i am grateful that we are in a place where we're having the options still taking care of each other still acting with kindness hearing that our children and our students are acting with kindness with one
067another i think it is exemplary and i applaud you all and we definitely think that we need to consider not placing additional burdens on the staff and the caring people who have brought us through our children through this over the past two years um the only recommendation i didn't make is that when we are making changes communications a little more time to talk to their children and get through what they saw because although anxiety issues yeah i just want to remind this as board members and for the community to know that it is not our role to make decisions around the operations of our schools we are here to provide vision and be communicators with the community and i think that that's what we're all doing but i just want to clarify that that is
068our role this is this was not our decision to make and i don't know that anybody understood that um support the superintendent and um her staff and making these decisions i want to clarify that because i feel like there was some um i i think that there was an expectation of but there's also things that you can learn by doing and i think that um we see that there is a deep culture of care in our state and you can see that through the continuing pastoral industry and um and and you know as we move forward the importance of high quality mass for almost for people who have to avoid infection is really important and i hope that you know the importance of keeping the supply of those high quality advancements like for the students
069who really need their families they really need to avoid impression that's going to be important i would hope also that you know that we seek out and encourage the education and the learning process that we're all gonna have to if you ask where are we gonna what are we gonna use and so i appreciate everybody's patience and the people who really and so uh i'm grateful for the continued conversation that's what that's what investing in public education means enlarging the capacity of your community and that's our goal here and foreign convenient actually in cincinnati ohio and jackson with me this is their only districts in ohio this is really going to be very impactful for us and it really depends upon how we use it so we're in a powerful learning homework there's an equity
070cohort so we're going to take advantage of everything we can i do want to point out that our students just had an opportunity so they have a nationalist part of the week of innovative schools it's called the c summit sep students for equitable education and so we've been able to identify five high schools and they create a virtual it's also created a national virtual conference on equitable education and we attempt to affect educators from across the country and though these students will get some um compensation for their time but that they drive the language so i think that's that's the first step in the right direction for us and it's a very exciting opportunity and then lastly i would pass the letter we are also part of our representative and so they asked if they
071would um i did so because our policies already align us that way and i think in these times whether it's around race or other trend trans issues i just want to say that my child tells me almost every weekend okay so we're in the sixth we have okay okay there are 57 of them so let me let me remind you how this is working this is part of our catch-up agreement so we work with our consultant and we go through policies and sections and so she goes through all the changes in the law to make sure we're caught up and so she might look at some of our policies policies and say this is fine others she will say we need to discuss these and so what you see here are policies that are either
072new or revised and so once this goes into reading they have to activate the next one the same word for the own once that's done no one does their work and you send these off and then they kind of update all of services that bylaws i think one three and four so the bylaws and one three and four would just be what moved to active if you have questions about these specifically it's probably best for each other because unlike a normal update that we get twice a year when you get these handy little legal advisories i don't have to kind of course catalog that is the comprehensive view of our program work studies at the high school two new courses one is english 12 that will align us closing the standards and provide a better
073experience for our students and then a math course um and then finally um so they both are presented identically and so i've tried to color code them i want to highlight a few changes so we now will have a um we now have a um full break at thanksgiving so we used to have two you can use it again for two days and then out and then we move some other things so that we will have we will come back to wednesday after new year's and the second day after spring break so that's tuesday that would be consistent the professional development days are our wealthy equipment each year you remember 2024 um but i think those are the big changes questions about is um okay uh so that means that on the 18th and 19th
074for example they will come in smaller groups right they will not feel two full days and so that if you're if you're a math brain and you've calculated the hours you'll see that that's um i'll show you that down there that reflects that and then you can't just multiply the days and the number of hours because the last day of the year and so because ohio was switched to hours none days we actually moved to calculate all that so days like we have bad weather or water main breaks you know our evis coordinator we have a spreadsheet she goes in and said you know february 11th this building this many hours and just before running this they can do that so if you should have a year which is just no they have the same
075number of hours for um yes um and we're trying to hire the rest of our supplementary staff for this training as well as still on substitutes and substituting bus drivers um yes all right communications is uh finally the ability boards have when people could challenge tax values and things like that yes that that's right so if somebody so if a property sells for a much higher price than the monetary passage spread um no honestly uh um first in the proposal we added a sentence uh number asked is um and then um is um overseeing industrial facilities [Music] michael is um but then like [Music] and he also worked with the facilities task force through these uh lots of schools um um [Music] company he does that one of the companies that do that just to
076get an idea of the cost okay um um so i'm looking at the tentative agendas and i recognize as i'm tentative just like you were saying um in that introduction there um judith um but i i was really struck i have to say by this um underneath the tasks to be completed for the following month um underneath the user's section one i was struck that the users are separate from the building systems that it seems like they'll be doing parallel things but um i was struck by this a number one assessing furnishings conditions and needs um i went back to the number one in your proposal and it does not use the word furnishings actually anywhere in the world it's used um twice because huge also below in large group areas um so i want
077to just know why we're using this word there's a point you know oh it didn't know how it's coming if you look at the proposal there's all these systems building systems uh so i guess i was looking at another number one proposal there are two sections yeah ones um but i just i still want to talk about this point because i find it um i find it odd that because my reading of this is that your committee is disciple or the leadership is deciding to intentionally limit the scope of what the user's recommendations and findings and assessments would be to limit it to the idea of furnishings okay i would like to i would like to know that we strike the word furnishings or we make it an inclusive list because to me again i
078read this that the users will be looking at the furnishings and i just think we all know that the needs that we have are much more systems wide yeah is [Music] so i know that there were any questions that they could have say in other discussions about the facilities and building systems because the first month the experts will be working on doing their homework [Applause] so we're just looking at the timeline over here we are preparing here the small bookworm this is just the first month mobile scope so that i can get the live room i'm going to say that the the most important thing the new groups are going to be doing is the second one the buildings and building systems but he said we thought of that number one but in the proposal
079that the users should particularly look at is i just want to make sure that the users when they're talking about things like my room is too hot or too cold electricity the internet all of these major systems that we know that are impacting users directly i do not want those to be overlooked or ignored because they are not considered experts in systems but they are the people that use the buildings every single day and we must allow space when i read this i don't i didn't see the space for the users to talk about those needs um i also didn't see where the users are talking about so i could be wrong i'm happy to clarify but where the users are really bringing their input in or where they also may be looking at the
080previous needs assessment i'm assuming that the assessment data is the previous needs assessment and if there's a particular document or study that i should be referred to for what the past users identify needs is this is right i see that obviously right i just wanted to make sure that we weren't creating two parallel groups that were doing separate work and not being in constant dialogue with each other and i know we wanted to get rid of people's time and we can't have everybody together at every moment but i would hate to see two if does that make sense like the users are doing one thing and the other folks are the building experts are doing something else and we're not actually speaking think of it that was on page two under the task to be
081completed the following month and again i know that your timeline is rough and i understand it's just this idea of the board members discuss what private fundraising would look like and identify partners um i just i recognize this is an ambitious timeline and i don't want to put pressure on folks but i do want to say that i won't endorse a plan that relies on prospective funding or unpledged private funding i will not vote for a plan that potentially again like ethically it would sort of leave our schools potentially in the lurch to say well we hope to get this private funding but in fact it is not um within our grasp and that could lead us in the danger of starting a project that we could not finish ethically that could leave us without
082a school system um so if we are exploring private funding which i do agree with that um i just want to be clear that by the end of this process that's part of my feasibility is this feasible it needs to be funding that i am aware that has been pledged in writing or has been raised or that we have the plan again in writing contractual that this is maintaining real money that we can rely on for the long term because i know that any one of these plans that we do we're talking about over time right and so i'm just i'm excited about that point but i'm also concerned about it and i just want to highlight it now that as you talk about it i think it would need to be pledged we really
083um with other this project is associated with these funds this project can be accelerated in time if you can you know if this capital can be raised so uh in other words it is a current and this was just a discussion that we had one director of operations we didn't go mentioned uh uh an auditorium you know uh here is that's typically something that has to be that by something uh so that's that's um against how looking at how could help us time and structure i understand that concept they are time consuming and part of i think what we're hearing at least from our past assessments is a lot of these needs are very time sensitive and so to embark on a you know five-year capital campaign for a particular part of the project maybe
084that'll be part of it but again i just i want us to be able to be very clear that the money is real and that the needs of our schools will be built and we're pledging that that money would be there without um making a decision to embark on a plan in which it is not fully funded and we don't know down the line the users um i would love for the systems to be explicitly stated there because i know we're not experts in the immune system but we know how the functionality of that system impacts our functions so so i guess i think it makes sense for me to avoid some movements in the exclusively stated systems and some of those other pieces there um just because i can look at a unit in
085perfect shape but by the time it makes it to my classroom or the installation of my classroom or whatever the other factors are it's not performing in a way that's inclusive that's something our users understand i [Music] and so having a regular survey about those environmental health and safety conditions i i i think that is something that i would love for you to be involved improvements um i gave everybody a sheet with some highlighted items on it we discussed this at our special meeting but i don't need an answer tonight but i i do want the board members to start thinking about this um so that we can i can get the answer next month um our permanent improvement levy is going to expire and that is what the one i highlighted um well one
086of the two that i highlighted um we can go as early as this fall to do that why is so there's lots of options um we wanted to stay with that amount now traditional wisdom november um you know you don't have to pass it in november we also have may of 2023 in november it's not really this top line the inside notes you can move inside those the permanent improvement or action point that is always an option you might have to go i already discussed this that's coming off in three games we know there's you know two levees within the next three four years we've been less than it's one now my only reason that's really possible for us is down further at the bottom you'll see there's a couple highlights the effective rates uh
087as we're called uh you know ag residential industry you're going to take away from that 25 so then that's only 10 um and people that watch our board meetings but i would say there's there's a lot of people that have no idea until we go on the ballot box and i know this is a figure that supports a lot but there's a lot of people that don't understand the way that taxes workings work and you so i want you guys to start thinking about that knowledge that i don't even answer tonight um if you move it if you move inside note goes through 4.3 minutes to the fundamentals and then you can later for quite some um but yeah you know maybe not all of it because people already in something not all of it
088but if you want to increase it and then you can renew for a different my feeling is that we need more yeah foreign maybe in the past but i think at this point you have computers yeah it's a 500 code the yeah i need a definite um foreign um this is a continual education process for me and um i will rely on your expertise in terms of some of these choice points as well but it's sooner than april 12th but um i know i i may or may not be here in april um but um uh um okay um that would be i there you go next month um okay so i mean we could do the word session in april you know um or compensation all right thank you everybody
