and then congratulations of which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice around questions all right first step we're looking for a motion to be able to provide agenda I move that we uh tonight's agenda today thank you Ernie any discussion all those in favor say aye aye motion carries next up is our consent agenda um I'll move reapprovement consent agenda thank you Adrian thank you Arne any discussion or additions um I will note that the meetings for us a few minutes for September 12th do not include who made the motion and seconded her perfect consent agendas also need to be amended for the future time any other additions or attendance okay all those in favor I suppose so for carries okay we're up to public inputs so it looks like we've
got a couple folks for public input and make sure I've got all my notes Here we do have public input we have greater approval ready okay all right so I just want to go over our a little bit about public comments um speakers may offer objective criticism of school operations and programs for the board will not hear personal complaints conserving School Personnel nor against any person connected with the school system the board chair will direct the visitors to the appropriate means for board consideration and disposition legitimate claims individuals I don't believe my time limit is on here but there is a three minute time limit as well welcome I'll be fine should I send a pair sure okay I'll try and make this as quick as I can okay I'm one of the ones that
voted for the school bond issue and I watched the new Marshfield Junior High being built during covid and um I was privileged to take a tour of that in the summertime when the students weren't there and um my friends have told me some facts about it but I feel like some of their facts are inaccurate and I'm sorry but during covid I didn't follow the details all that closely and I thought I'd come here and find the answers to my questions so I first of all who was the architect for that building me too I'm sorry we don't respond right away but we can take your questions and um I'm the superintendent I can make sure staff can follow back up with you okay fine to make that quicker yeah if you want to share
with the questions with us um I wanted to get her email address just to be sure no so we have some way to contact you um I was told by friends that there was a similar design in Sweet Home and in bent so I would like to know who the architect was and um who chose that design was it an individual off of the board or was it a committee how did that process go and what did it look like for you guys and I'd like to know if the teachers were involved in that process also and um I'd like to know what the full student capacity of that building is and what's the enrollment for 2022-23 and then the emergency disaster Gathering Place where is that because I was told a different kind uh
different couple of different ways that where it was and how the students would access that um especially with the physically challenged because I'm a retired occupational therapist I worked in this school district so and I can't believe that it's been eight years since I've been retired now too but anyway um whenever I just some of my concerns it's no criticism or anything I just want to know how these things have been addressed the power went off twice during my tour what would happen to the people in the elevators uh the bathroom entrance is really loud and echoing and doesn't seem like that there's that much audio privacy between the boys in the girls rooms uh the when the girls locker room only had one closed stall and during especially certain times of the month privacy
is really important to girls during that time uh the windows on the second and third floor do not open and I was told that were there at least two days that classes were suspended because of the carbon monoxide level in the school um the gym size is that a regulation gym size because whenever I toured it the top two tiers of the bleachers could not be pulled out because it would be in the gym Court and I want are they oversized bleachers or is this not a regulation size floor because would that prevent it from um participating in the basketball tournaments that we have here and that are really yeah anyway um also the gym floor it was a beautiful design that's that's times and then inside and outside shelters in the rain and just
a general design and who signed off on those and if those facts are correct or if I need to correct my friends so thank you for your time thank you thank you I just want to say that our role is the board is to installment or answer questions some of that might be because we're not the ones with the information and so somebody couldn't get back to you with that I think David's going to follow up with some of that as well as there might be multiple people that need to be asked for questions and and you can always follow up with the other questions with David as well so thank you do we have anyone else for public comment oh sorry okay no okay perfect and we're moving along and we have our high
school update with Carly Campbell oh thank you Charlie hi everyone okay so um September was a very crazy month up at the high school so I'm gonna start out with homecoming so um there was over 450 people at the dance and then prior to that we had homecoming week which is spirit week and everything went great there was a lot of student involvement which we're really looking for and a lot of school spirit um and but anything but a backpack today that was Mr Ashton's personal favorite um and then for Sports volleyball our Marshall volleyball team is first in the state so good job to them they're doing super well and they have a game on Wednesday at Marist football is seventh in the state and they have a game a home game on Friday
against Henley um girls soccer has a game tomorrow against Cottage Grove they're doing super good as well boys soccer has a game on Tuesday as well against Cottage Grove I believe I don't know I do not know which one plays first um and then cross country we have Alex Garcia silver he's doing really great he's breaking records and their whole team in general is doing really good and we're halfway through The League season for sports for clubs and activities we have Z club which is working on getting a grant for Community organizations National Honor Society had an induction around can inductees robotics is gearing up for their first tournament the speech and debate has their tournament coming up I believe I don't know exactly when that is but I know it's at it will be
held at Marshfield and then for academics we are welcome welcoming a new English teacher Mrs hillenhagen this week um November is college month we have the SAT and the PSAT on Wednesday this week um for like another class that we have AP environmental science is a new course this year and they have their first test and that went really well and we have call College visitations throughout the year and Pacific University came last Wednesday yeah right thank you guys can you remind me what was the theme for homecoming so the theme was once upon a time so it was like fairy tale it was very cute our event coordinators should really get on that I should know that my daughter went to recall Carly are you taking the sat on on Wednesday yes I hope
it goes well thank you thank you Harley so osea business Barbara green oh gosh okay um cool I didn't know what I was talking about a month oh that's okay I am unprepared I just picked up my kid from daycare I actually have three of them in the car and swim um things are going um we are starting up a new year we're working with Michelle on giving reclassification stuff figured out um I don't think there's been any real big complaints or grievances or anything like that so I think everything is good I don't know what I'm supposed to do you did perfect okay you did great you didn't mention libraries but other things no they're good they're okay older yeah yeah okay hello um Carly you did such a wonderful job it's such a
pleasure to hear an update from the high school thank you and Barbara I feel for you I I get it um and I um I still feel that way a couple years later so I know um don't have a lot to report but um you know we've had a couple meetings with um with Charis and Michelle uh basically about class caps um we keep going over and we keep meeting and problem solving together and um it's that's it I mean we do we're all working hard to do the best we can um amplify started showing up in my building today so really grateful for that um I think Chad did a really great job of dealing with the stress that came with not uh not getting it when we wanted it but um he's offered
you know time cards for those um to unpack and and all those things so um it's been it's been a rough start without it for sure I'm an Ela teacher so that's my curriculum and all we could do is access it through Chromebooks and even got a couple complaints from parents so far like is are they seriously going to work on Chromebooks every day um no we definitely don't want to do that anymore but that's what we've had to do um so far so um looking forward to working with that curriculum we have a new oea consultant and I had the pleasure of introducing him to Karis and Michelle the other day um and we'll be looking for an opportunity to get him here to meet the rest of you although we have bargaining this
year so you'll get to know him quite well I'm sure um his name is Daniel and Daniel O'Donnell is his name um he is uh he is hosting um two big dinners for new hires in our region this week ours is Thursday uh we've invited I I had that number and now I forgot it but we've invited new hires all new hires from our district from our certified since October 19th that was the last time we were able to have a new hire dinner we we used to hold them every other year so um hoping to see lots and faces there and get to just introduce um our consultant as well as you know just do some door prizes and just offer support to each other so um let's kind of keep us busy this
week and that's it thanks yes absolutely okay yeah um I was on the class caps is set because enrollment was higher than I'm sorry we anticipated or the class caps you said you guys have been problem solving so just making sure I'm understanding so you guys had a set number of people that you wanted to have in your classroom and so are we getting more kids than anticipated or do we I don't know Candace can you maybe I mean I I I'm sorry to throw me under the bus there I don't know exactly all the reasonings um there I think it's been various things that has caused us to go over this suggested capsize language from our contract okay um but our in our contract states that um you know we we started with some
capsized suggestions and then we added some language that says Okay um now if we go over them now we need to meet as a committee from both sides and and problem solve together so that's where that comes from um I know one of them happened because we were having a hard time at the beginning of right at the beginning finding enough candidates to fill the positions um I mean Michelle could speak to this much better than I but um we current like currently we're learning but um we don't have enough language to specify um as we make decisions um the thing we're going to bargain and talk about adding some at some point because like for example at the high school uh they're Pat classes do we include that do we not include that when
we're talking about cap Sciences so um I mean I guess there's a lot of great discussions being had as we problem solve together um and I've seen the district do their best to bring him down okay we did just hire a teacher today yes and a new preschool teacher her Friday right yeah wonderful wonderful yes thank you are there any other questions for Becky or Barbara sorry well you did great so thank you and Becky thank you so much for that information as well we have business office from Candace McGowan foreign okay I'll go over these real quick I know you have a big agenda ahead of you here um our first report the general fund by object a couple things I want to point out if you if you look at salaries right now
with our encumbrance which is uh objects 111 and 112. you'll see that we're actually in the negative the reason for this is uh we we have a lot of people um charged to the general fund right now that I know belong in Grants we're meeting on that tomorrow and we will be shuffling some FTE around um we just didn't have the answers that we needed when we started payroll in August and September so we'll get this cleaned up the numbers should look different next month um that's really the only thing I wanted to point out on that report was there any questions on that one if not I can move on to the statement of revenues expenditures and changes and fund balances um again we don't have uh June 30th ending fund balances quite yet
to put in this beginning fund balances here um we are about 80 percent through our audit um and I do want to give you a heads up we are going to have a finding um and Laura will talk about it in December but I know she will use a lot of language that maybe is not always easy to understand so I'll just real quick I'll tell you what happened um our Sia Grant which is the student investment account Grant um funded from corporate activity tax that Grant was administered a little bit differently than our other ones in the fact that um they wanted us to claim 50 early and then the other 50 percent in May where's our other special Revenue grants are a reimbursement process you spend the money you ask for the okay
so um we claim the 50 and we continued on spending our money the grant ends September 30th just a couple weeks ago so June 30th came around and we had an ending fund balance which is abnormal in our our special Revenue uh for for state and federal income I did not move the revenue to deferred revenue which is a liability I left it in Revenue which is an asset so I am gotten a little bit of a little bit of trouble for that so um that's going to be in our audit the money has been spent it ended September 30th uh we'll remove we'll move the revenue back to revenue July 1 spend it by September 30th it's all good it's it's merely accounting it should have been in a liability instead of an asset
so she will talk about that but it might be in words that are just not as easy to understand so I just wanted to give you a heads up on that one um if we don't have any questions on this report we can move into uh student enrollment this report uh Karis and I have talked about a little bit next month will look a little bit different in um the aspect that I will not only include what June's numbers were for reference I will also include what the previous year in that month is so that you'll be able to compare time periods a little bit easier but for this report um the bottom chart you can see where we were uh September 8th which was 3147 students and we were at 3102 October 5th so
we are seeing um a few drops uh K8 seems to be pretty steady where we're seeing the movement is 912 which is um very standard yes I just want to comment just a bit about that um that's very standard I sign all the inner District transfers so this is where we're still seeing some movement to places like winter lakes and other places so we're seeing some movement at the high school level one comment I wanted to address is I've heard from the high school folks from a lot of people that they feel like there's so many more students at High School this year than last year and they're like I can't believe in Romans up so much but if you look um it's up a little but not um um I mean it is up
which is great but the biggest impact I think is last year we had a 134 students online this year we have 42. so those students have moved from being in the online school to being in person so it doesn't impact the overall enrollment admw for the district but we have a lot more students in person so you talk about impacting class sizes and everything all of a sudden we have you know a significant number shifts from online to in person that also is another variable that's impacting the class sizes at the high school level so I just wanted to point that out that yes there are more students at the high school this year in terms of physically being present but not in terms of our idea any questions for Candace well thank you for
coming clean on that one or like I know it's probably I know better I was more disappointed in myself I was gonna say you'll probably beat yourself up way more than than we would ever or for supervisor probably ever wore this okay Finance yeah just to clarify it does not impact our bottom line so the accounting debit credit liability asset I'm so glad it's you [Laughter] and Karis or our parents in an update okay you have my glasses on good evening everyone so nice to see everybody people here and everyone online I just see your screens but um glad you're here also so officially I would like to pronounce that Wednesdays are my favorite day those are the days I'm out in the buildings and I've been to four so far four four days in
buildings um and I just get re-energized and to see to get to meet our amazing students and to see the learning going on in the classrooms it's really inspiring um and yes being out there I can I I see I see firsthand some of the challenges and some of the excitement and some of the issues and some of the successes that that go on I mean lunch today at millikoma that was a well oiled machine going through but apparently at the beginning of the year they had to work out some cakes so I mean just getting to see it it was smooth and four lunch sessions coming in in and out and the cleaning in between and that's just and seeing the curriculum the Amplified curriculum being taught going into classrooms and like seeing like
children learning like the same vocabulary words and sharing all that information and also seeing the frustration you know amplifies had some lifetime issues um with the connectivity on their end and watching teachers of having to you know keep five and six-year-olds occupied who are waiting that Spinning Wheel of death on the laptop and watching that we just you know getting to experience this all firsthand to see what amazing things that our staff are doing to support our students so I just I love Wednesdays so thank you everybody for and everyone's been so welcoming the students are incredible um and I think it's good for me to be out there they I I go in the classrooms and I get a lot of oh are you the aide why are you here and I explained that
I'm a superintendent the kids have no idea the little ones particular have no idea who the superintendent is the little boy at lunch today was convinced that it was impossible for me to be Mr Robert's boss so I think it's good for little boys to see you know women in this in these roles and so I just it's like a learning opportunity um for everyone and and I just enjoy every minute and he is the sweetest little boy he did it it was from all the goodness in his heart but I like shattered his stereotypes which is which is good um so I had great lunch today um shout out to Sodexo my chicken teriyaki was delicious so it was just it was really good lunch I would also like to note that there are
several different important National recognition events going on this month for example today is indigenous people's day it's a day to honor Native American people and commemorate the history and culture um in our society and a special thank you to our cokewell Indian tribe and our confederated of Coos Laura Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians they're incredible um partners and community members and students and families and I just want to um you know send out deep appreciation for all the um uh that incredible Community brings to to us and to our learning into our schools so second it is also Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th and this is a national holiday celebrating the history culture and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors come from Spain Mexico the Caribbean and Central and South America and
their theme this year is inclusivity for a stronger nation and if you look at our demographics you'll see the little chart over there um our Hispanic students are our fastest growing demographic in our community so absolutely thrilled to get to celebrate um Hispanic Heritage Month the last two um not so much cultural but really important things um it is also a bullying prevention month and so shout out to Steph um teachers specified AIDS everyone working hard to make sure our classrooms and our schools are safe and welcoming as possible um I just today I was in the lunchroom and I didn't know where to sit this is a perfect example of anti-bullying work and the students in the culture at melanoma I was like oh where should I sit and I was looking around and
you know the kids don't know me I'm I'm new I my my children are all grown up so I'm not a mom in this system I'm an empty nester and this little boy walked into me and he said would you like to come sit with me and they came and he offered me a place to come sit down and that's the kind of kindness and welcoming and belonging that will make our students feel welcome and safe um and to see that model by a little nine-year-old boy was just really moved me today so just really powerful and then finally I probably will get emotional um it is we just concluded suicide awareness month and this is a special issue for me I'm going to a celebration of life in Eugene the weekend after next for
a 17 year old that I've known since she was in preschool that completed suicide recently um and her family has made it public it's been a newspaper story in the register Garden Eugene so I'm not sharing anything that isn't um public knowledge um her older sister is my daughter's one of her best friends from first grade and I've watched this family um grow up so suicide prevention is hitting at home for me um and it is something that there's nothing more important we can do than to keep our children safe and um I already met one of the first things I did in August um I met with Heidi Luckman was our Behavior therapist um and we reviewed our crisis plan and our suicide crisis protocol we have a very strong protocol and I met
with Rama at the who's mental health department and she is our direct contact we have a close partnership with Coos mental health to make sure that any of our students or anybody who want who needs help gets the support they need and nationally they just launched uh help number 988 so if you know anyone you hear if you hear anyone any student even start talking about suicide or talking about not wanting to live or going through it call 988 they can get you the resources and referrals talk to adult in the building talk to just reach out if your friend is making comments tell an adult so we can get the student help yes I just want to also mention about the waterfall clinic first do they sell sort of also provides us with therapists
as of this week we just got notified so now every single one of our schools will have a full-time or a heart fund therapist yeah so this is something thank you typical excuse mental health for the partnership something I'm very passionate about and anything we can do the literal worst days of my career have been days where I've been at work and a student has completed suicide and um never want to ever do it again so whatever we can do to prevent it so I just wanted to note that this has been suicide awareness month and to keep that front and center that we take care of each other and if someone needs help please please ask because we have help I know there's amazing people in this community that will help our kids so
um other updates I have a lot on the agenda the big major things that we've been working on in the central office such as division 22 requirements and um the strategic planning work and the integrative initiative I have whole agenda items so uh the subs the more like what we're actually doing will come later on I do want to thank everyone who's working so hard as Becky you always steal my talking or nothing talking points um thank everyone who's working hard on Ela curriculum implementation implementation is hard usually takes three to five years before it's implemented with Fidelity we're in year one there's always usually if you look at implementation science research there's actually usually a dip in year one for implementation because of the speed bumps and the challenges and learning new ways of
doing things we have a so Chad thank you for your leadership I'm so excited to see the amp the amplify boxes in millikoma today they're they're getting there um and so thank you to staff for your patience and flexibility as we roll this out but it's high quality evidence-based curricula and I'm really excited for the impact that it will bring in our students so um and just a side note by my final note is uh we do have a Communications and Community engagement specialist who is starting on Monday and it is public mail I can share David call this from the World newspaper is leaving the world and coming to work here um to help coordinate all of this first thing is I'm going to get that website updated I see that you're still the
chair you're the vice chair I still have Brian schrizzle I mean it's going to be so nice um to have also assistance when we get into the strategic planning all the community engagement support that he'll be able to help to build our capacity to build stronger two-way communication with the community so just wanted to share that too and I am that's enough you'll hear a lot more from me later so thank you all yes thank you Paris um any questions so far for Paris I'd like to play out uh just uh it's not just our our information that's a little bit dated in our web materials fell out of the school materials too it's really across the board where they're these are just not updated uh you know the covet message from two years ago
it was on there but I think you know some of the things just got parked yeah so I am hoping that we can kind of bring those things back up to speed uh you know over the next few years and it is expected he will also be providing um support to all the buildings and the school websites too so it builds capacity at the building level also which is really nice great any other questions or comments I just want to say my heart goes out to you and the family that you know and thank you Lisa for mentioning about waterfall clinic and the counselors at the schools it is a very hard topic and um thank you for mentioning all the other pieces that we have Awareness on and that we're celebrating as well so
stupid Stadium Sussex Stadium Bill mcnuck and Kevin dubashard you are up um he's the guy in charge [Laughter] I don't know about that yet foreign 1975 a graduate of Marshfield High School also in 1969 graduate of Milner Crest Elementary uh I've been involved with the and Servants of chairman of the Sussex Stadium project for the last six years um our group as endeavored to do a couple things when we got involved with the standing project and two things were one to be make sure that the there was adequate functionality of the stadium second one of the more important ones is to be a good Steward's money and um I think we've been able to accomplish that you've got a group of about 10 people that have been great usually in the projects that I'm involved
with in the mid Willamette Valley usually have about a two-year time time frame this one's six so they had a few things getting light but when I'm here to speak to you about is really where we're coming to you as a board with the facilities group and that is for the last 20 percent of this project this project is a nine hundred thousand dollar project we've currently raised seven hundred thousand for the project which is about split in half about 350 000 in cash and also about three hundred and fifty thousand and donated labor and materials um a couple areas where we're at to get to the Finish Line really two big areas that Stadium seats four thousand people currently has no Ada capability whatsoever that's something that we actually have a plan for we
can go from zero to about 12 people uh that are challenging Mobility wise we can have a person who can come to the game come into the South Stadium get to the middle Promenade section between the upper and lower level be undercover and be at the 50-yard line so that's an important thing that and it's been a big thing with the past administration whether it's Brian or Boyd girl request or Mike George or Eli Ashton under any of your administrators it's been a tough one in the past for them to answer that question because the answer was they didn't have an answer because it wasn't capable you know they've looked at the North Stadium which seats 2 700 people and that's just not feasible to retrofit that Stadium whatsoever um so what we've presented and
presented to Arnie and Kevin for those in the facilities Department to take a look at is our request to get to the finish line and in all the projects that I've been involved in this is number six it's been the toughest but it's also been the most rewarding because of the gentleman who the Stadium's named after who I had the privilege of my two brothers had privilege of playing for so and those two areas really are the Ada accessibility into the stadium and also restaurant capability um some of you may know I didn't until I started getting involved in the project but Sussex stadium is a is a regional um evacuation Center tsunami Zone we did not know that so some of the capabilities we'll be able to do is as far as electricity and
one of the other speakers talked about losing electricity in one of the schools if electrical functions are out we'd be able to run that Stadium especially the south side which could serve as on food preparation heat lighting and that type of thing if there's a power situation or a windstorm which happens frequently in this area and such so that we have that capability to help in that area also a couple things we've been able to do so far is the roof was a big linchpin for us getting that roof but in the original roof was scheduled to be uh cover about 1300 people and ours is scaled down a little bit and it covers about 400 so we're able to get people undercover if that's inclement so the the areas that we're working on now
and that's where you come in as far as help and assistance at us which is monetary help is to get to that finish line is the Ada capability and the restroom capability we have right now we're just waiting for finalized permit from the City of Coos Bay For Those portions to allow us to get going and get started with but we have people standing by to help us in those areas as far as the restrooms Scott pardoning who is your general contractor as Elementary is the general contractor for the restrooms at no charge also for the plumbing in this area and it's West Plummer from Tri-County Plumbing who I believe did the plumbing work at Madison as well that bill will be cost of materials plus 10 Administration so really what we're able to do
privately in my mind is to accomplish that for probably half if you're out in the in the real Marketplace two years down the line as far as paying for that so what I've presented to Kevin and Arnie is a budget of the areas of concern that we need to do to get this finished to get it wrapped up for the school district and for the community and that's really restaurants 88 capability some functionality as far as a concession area over there and and and be able to have that operate also if you had situations where a power was lost uh that approximate number is about 174 000 that was presented to your facilities Department and then I put in a contingency on that which rounds it to 200 000. as you all know as you
go out and buy products in today's Marketplace um it's more it's more expensive and almost all of the general contractors whether it's electrical whether it's Ada capability whether it's um uh viewing boxes which we've done five which are for for fun and enjoyment but also it could be a source of revenue for the school it already has been a source of revenue for us where we can see 42 people in heated facilities they can watch the event it could be a family whether it's a playoff game or whether it's a special event whether it's soccer whether it's a concert whatever it could be and then those monies with the intention that that goes back to Marshfield High School athletics so um I'd like to help answer any questions at this time if I could for
you thanks attorney okay I just like making statement sense um since the time I was high school with principal which is many years ago now uh like 20 years now um we've been trying to figure out how to the stadium I was there when the stands on the South Side um slipped onto the track um and so we knew we had to get it out of there because the landslide was happening and there used to be another bus um garage attached to the West gym we had to take it out because the bank was coming down um so it was a um Hazard for the the community and we were worried at one time that the West gym could come down so um the first thing that we did when we got this first group
together they were going to put in the stadium which was a little bit larger in the rift twice um but all the money that they've raised went into putting in a foundation that would hold the bank back so it is pretty well the foundation is really pretty amazing and a lot of that work took place back when I was high school principal um but then we didn't have the resource so when I came back um to be full-time in the community again I Had A legislature that it was interesting and I got connected to Bill and the group that's been working on this and they've been raising funds and doing a good job working through canvas and getting the right people which I've been very impressed with the other one he didn't mention was Knife
River who has done all the grading work on a whole bunch of other stuff and they didn't charge a lot either um so getting it to the point that it is now and I just decided personally I'm talking to Kevin about coming in a meeting it's time that we get it done it's been over 20 years so we've been trying to fix that up and I will tell you as a high school principal when you had grandparents come to a football game in a wheelchair when all we had was the other stands and you try to set them on the little walkway that's a little elevated but there's so many people standing in front they couldn't see their brackets playing football I think or soccer or whatever if if the crowd is Big you don't
see from where they are and they certainly didn't feel a part of the community when they were there so looking at what can happen now of access and they've been bringing kit uh handicapped people in in a little cart last few things and getting them to a place where they can sit it's pretty amazing for me to watch and now that I'm getting up to be that groundbreaking I would love to have the ability to finish that up we are at a place and talking uh with Scott and others that Scott is finishing up Sunset um he has a crew and willing to have them come and do the work that saves us a lot of money at the end of the day and Dr McCandless Welbeck it is our Stadium we're gonna have to
figure out what we're going to do with it at some point anyway I mean that's the final deal I would hope that Kevin and facility is going to look at it and come up with where resources could come it's good to hear that it's a regional site if that's the case I think maybe some of the federal money that's been coming in could be used I don't know the answer to that they'll have to figure out but from my perspective having it done uh having where waterfall Clinic is in that parking lot just makes all of this work together really really well and I and I know we have hundreds of things we can spend money on there's that four thousands um there's just a lot of things that have to be done but getting
something finished and then moving on is something I think is important is that really amazing to watch the building that's gone in this District never in the history of the district has there been as much construction and improvements in facilities in my entire life in this school is really 50 years not even close but they've been doing so um I am really supportive of trying to figure out a way for us to finish it up and I thank you and your team for doing it I know they have the companies they're not lying deliveries some more money they're trying to get to that last little bit so and they keep applying for Grants and they keep working on different kinds of things to get resources but I think it's time personally and and we have
people in place that can go to work so hopefully we can have a presentation in a month that shows where the money could come from how we could do that to support it I will say we'd like to spend every cent you have raised um as before we've been to any of the districts we're fine with that I just I just think that um it from my perspective and having watched this for so long and sitting over there now in those stands uh was packs on the back of the chair of the spirit of the market so um and it is a we are as they announced every time I go to the football game the number one ranked High School stadium in the state of Oregon and there's a group that nationally went around
and rated every state with one stadium for high schools and this is the one and I think it's because of the work that community members have done for a long time and I know we're trying to fix a roof on the other side I mean it's just it keeps being all these things all of those have lots of money and we but we need to take care of them and we need to get them done right in the first place so um kind of closing on my part um in the other facilities I've been involved with the mid Willamette Valley which is Ben Sprague High School Dallas High School Silverton High School West Salem High School and um it's you get to a point in a project where it has a life cycle and there's
a cycle when you have to hit the green button and there's a cycle when you need one more thing to get to the finish line and we're at that point in our time my wife keeps asking me she says don't your projects usually about two years long and I said yeah we had a couple things get in the way but this one has the most meaning for me great facilities which this town has always had and that stadium was built in 1948 they sold bonds to finance Sussex Stadium when it had Mirror Image stadiums on both sides with seated 1500 on each side which were identical most of the people never redeemed their Bonds in that 1948 issuance of bonds because to support that in 1972 I watched North Stadium burn when I was an
eighth grader at Hardin and then watched what was replaced in 1972 by the community once again um in 2000 when Smith family donated uh for that field to be put into place which was artificial surface which I've been involved with in the midwima valley for a long time that Marshfield was in 2000 when that happened mid Willamette Valley in the Salem region and that first one was 2007 which we did privately at Sprague high school so this area has always been very forward thinking in its facilities and uh evidence of what you've been doing in your bond work which I think is great um we'd just like to get those Finishing Touches on the stadium but we'll need you to help us get it closed any other collection says you mentioned swimming news sister is
happy so long connections and we really appreciate the fact that is take your time because this is not your job none of those projects are anything you made any money from um Marshfield hasn't been um the other the other ones that charge the fee yes but I was charging it for the Marshfield would be about 180 000 for my time and that's just me not including another gentleman who's a past facilities person board New York was retired out at North Bend who has done about an equal amount of facilities work very fortunate with our group that we have that superintendent a couple athletic directors Temple school principals and then some private people and there's one other member here yes Keenan Holt a CPA yeah there you go I see Diane had a question I do
have a question so yes with it being um something that you're looking to move forward with like the ABA capabilities and I think an emergency um Gathering area does that open you up for any other brands or any other funding um we we've had four grants we've we've had success on two um we just recently learned that a local Grant was not going to be able to help us we felt that either that particular grounding granting Foundation or the district would be our last two choices in our project so Ben Dunes Ford Family Foundation Logan Foundation OSAA Foundation have been the ones that we've had Grant applications to have been funded by two of those four so and we're lucky enough to have a retired District 9 principal who's a wonderful writer right the schwarzeness
Tedder does all of that for us so we've been very fortunate she can paint a great picture with the grant I hope that helps answer your question man yeah and I do want to make a statement I love the idea of the Ada capabilities and I think that would go very far also inclusion for students here to be able to get to some of those events and be um just a part of the game and a part of or whatever is is going on could be affecting field of meat it could be whatever it is so I'm glad that we are working towards one other thing I'll add because you mentioned students that's real important so for the ticket booth up top and for a concession area um up top and for probably a Stairway
that we need to do in the back the advanced uh construction class is going to be the ones we're going to be doing that they've agreed to do that Jesse Ainsworth teacher in that class they've already started who I have to wait to go any farther for it yeah so in order to stay in line with there but it's great to have the students who go to Marshfield High School have a little piece of ownership in this project so it can be really it's everyone it's you it's the alums that we've had great success with it's the contractors almost all of them Marshfield graduates all Marshfield athletes and some some form that have helped us so um we we're probably looking at spending 40 cents on the dollar what we've done so far and we
think we've come to about the end of our limit there in the community but they've been created so I hope that helps answer another question we think it's great to have the students involved yeah so thank you so much for your generosity and all that you've done and all that you've given to the stadium into the community it means a lot to me great so thank you process wise what we discussed is um in order for the board to have more information more details to make it a possible decision about this next month is we have a facilities committee meeting on November 1st so I don't know if you're available or someone could come that will be available um if you could come so we could get into more specifics like yes you you mentioned
giving a budget or a plan to Kevin and arnian we haven't seen it yet so if we could like that kind of information and we could get into details so that affiliate facilities committee can decide what they want to recommend to the board at the next meeting so just process I don't know if you're available I'm hoping I know that's more time on your end okay sure thank you I appreciate it I appreciate your time and what your board does for the school district thank you thank you so much question but on the comment on the facilities it's for the November 1st if any of the board here have any questions that they'd like us to ask or bring up so that we're ready when we do present to you guys we'll have those numbers
available also thank you Bill it sounds like you've got a very long history with our school district and um we appreciate all the all the support you've given us I would assume that Candace will be a big part of that conversation as well I just didn't hear her title her name mentioned yeah and this has been terrific okay okay she self keep us on track one of the things that when we met six years ago and Candace was at that meeting to make sure that that we had a good process as far as what budgetary ideas were and where the control was and our unanimous decision as a group was to go through the district try to use the district specifications and rules and regulations as they do projects and then for Candace to manage
it so every invoice Candace thank you'd have one for you though there's a small one okay which is good um to go through Candace and the district and then have those payments made by the district office so she's been a terrific help for us and thank you hey thank you all right Paris up to you again division 22. um I have a in their packet starting on page 17. is a PowerPoint I am not going to go through the whole PowerPoint this is actually from the Oregon Department of Education explaining the division point to standards and assurances so I will leave it to everybody who wants to go in depth about our division 22 standards there's a lot of information there are some things I'd like to highlight even is there a way I can
project or yep I'm giving me up there now okay um so starting on page 17 I'll just start quickly what are division 22 standards every year annually every school district in the state is required to report on their compliance with the division 22 standards okay where am I aiming you shouldn't have to aim it anywhere you should just click forward third one okay here we go so division 22 is come from the state the Oregon administrative rules there's chapter 581 division 22 and division 22 is the section of our state what we call oars which are the administrative rules for public elementary and secondary schools is the official name um these are the standards that the Oregon legislature or the State Board of Education have determined must be met in order to be a standard
School District in the state um in compliance with these rules I think this is a really important Point compliance with these rules and choose ensures a baseline level of service across the state so this is the Baseline this is the floor this is minimal compliance so I think we've had conversations with the with the staff what we need to ensure that we're meeting minimal compliance but we always want to go for Best Practices ideally but this is to its sure so these are reported on every year um the division 22 categories is it delayed or am I just oh well I'm on page 21 of packing and what would like to thank over here okay there we go that's what what I wanted so the categories there are over 50 standards that we have to
um send this attestation to the state that we're in compliance the majority of employee teaching areas of teaching and learning area so Chad had a lot to do for the division 22 this year and then there's health and safety District performance and accountability and then human resources and Staffing are the major categories um so reporting we have to report every year and I have included and we need to we'll post this on our website there's the district report on all 50 of those standards so what page does that start on so you can see 30 to 41 in the packet um what you'll see is we went through every of the 50 standards and you have to do um they've made it they really simplified it in the years I've been doing division 22. they
now have provide you this slick spreadsheet and there's actually a link a hyperlink you can just click on so if you look at the electronic version of this if you want to say like what is the division 22 compliance for Career Education in the district you just click click that link it'll show you the state statute and then the next column we have to report if we're in compliance or out of compliance um and then um the explanation or evidence why we're in compliance or not so we spend a lot of time this year providing the evidence whether we're meeting or not so you'll see there's links and there's information and explanations for all of them and then for the areas that we are not in compliance um what is our corrective action plan and
timeline for the so the state gives you a year to get in compliance so what we found cutting to the chase any questions about what it is and what we're doing just trying to do this quickly heading to the chase we found that there are five area five standards that we aren't currently in compliance with in that they are um working to be in compliance with if I could get it oh this is a fly-in slide yeah that'll take all day all right so the five that were out of compliance number one is our prevention education in drugs and alcohol um we're in partial compliance with doing this um students are provided instruction and activities K through 12 but it's time for us to review update and adopt a comprehensive plan for alcohol and drug
abuse prevention I think it's it's been a while my understanding since the district's like decades has done a deep dive and there is a County resource that she's wonderful Lisa did you were you the one that reached out to her tell us more about her her job her uh drug and alcohol education and she's been actually trying to get into schools for a long time so she's very excited um and if we put together to work right so we're going to be working on reviewing and updating our plan and that rolls into a couple of the other requirements the last two the instructional materials adoption and the postponement of purchase of state adopted instructional materials we are in really good shape on the state curriculum adoption cycle like better than most districts in the state
I'm really proud of of what an incredible job we are in being in line with the curriculum adoption cycle the one area we're not and it's that it relates directly to those prevention alcohol and drug abuse is our health curriculum so the one area that we're looking at is um doing a health curriculum adoption um so this year we'll be working on that the district-wide health plan and then maybe looking at next year and the year after doing the health adoption to be in compliance so those are three of the five standards it's all comes back to it because the drug and alcohol prevention those are standards in the health curriculum so once that we um um get in compliance with health curriculum will then meet that standard also the other area with two standards
we're out of compliance are in PE minutes um Arnie would you like to explain the PE business issue I'm glad to that was one that I got in trouble with repeatedly at the legislature because the person who really wanted PE minutes was this was the president of the Senate this was his goal and light was to get PE minutes and uh being the education chair I was came to me and I that we don't need that many PE minutes but eventually I was not the chair and they did get PE minutes on Statewide um they high school is not as hard to get to it because you have classes but Elementary School figuring out how to find enough hours in the day um to get kids out and formalized physical education um is really is
hard so um I don't know how many school districts are in compliance Statewide with the Elantra and they gave us quite a few years to implement but it's past that time now so um we're trying to figure it out I I assume we're doing okay in the high school levels yes okay we're doing great at the junior high level okay well they've increased it this year up to 225 it was a big show um but we're meeting at Junior High it's phenomenal this is the omen School District I've seen in the state of Oregon that's actually in compliance so um and we're really close at the elementary levels um so I'm really impressed with how much PE education our students do receive but every year for last three years they've ratcheted up the PE work
and now it's it's I will say that there is a lot of good evidence out there and the Senate President brought up every time his wife was a PE teacher um that a sound body mix for a sound mind and the more kids get outside activities um the better the more likelihood is they'll do well academically so physical activity is an important aspect in mental health and it's a very important aspect and cognitive development so there are reasons for figuring out how to do it especially since so many of our kids don't do any physical activities on their home there used to be I think less of a need because there was a lot of kids out playing all the time doing the soccer field all the time we don't have as much of that
now and I think there is a reason for wanting to have kids healthy and that's a big part of making them good students and citizens in the future so figuring out how to do it is important right and I was just uh uh when I went to that state conference in Salem two weeks ago um met with the with Cosa who were the school administrators Association and their legislative analyst Morgan Allen he reported that this is actually going to be an issue in the legislative session revisiting these PE minutes and so he told all the superintendents in the room hold tight we're going to see what the new requirements are after the legislative session his prediction was that these requirements might change now that I believe the senator has retired I believe it'll change but
I you're you're this legislator I don't know it'll be interesting to watch and see it'll be interesting so those are the five um and I just wanted to this is legally required this is the assurances process of the school district superintendent's report to their local school board the district's compliance with all those in 22 standards for last year so I'm recording on how I did last year um by November 1st 2022 so I had to do it at this meeting to get into clients before November 1 deadline then um the community report I've included in here we'll post on our websites and then there is a separate assurances form that I have to fill out that has to be submitted to open OD by November 15th and this is an annual process you'll see it
again I'm sure you've seen it a lot every year in the past so we're just um um in compliance with the prop the division 22 process itself so and are we good we you don't need to take a vote I just left a report on the status too I've got a question but we might not have the answer to it so on the because they're like a pack of PE Credit Recovery wherever they're doing at a different program that maybe someone could sign off of like as a coach or another activity um we were just looking into what is um legally definition of PE instruction it has to be um by a licensed teacher doesn't have to be in PE where look David and I just pulled that up this afternoon we had that question
come up today uh so like a elementary teacher can supervise activity doesn't have to be certified P for it to count but it has to be someone who's licensed to teach yeah there is a provision in there I have to get the details on it but there was a provision I think it's just for high school which is where word finds anyway but uh but there was a provision around sporting events uh but they would have to provide evidence recording or something like that I'll get you the for my coaches let me know yeah you can look at it so anything else on division 22. oh these are really the from the state's perspective division 22 is what schools are all about these are those minimum requirements that every school district needs to comply with
and um I would say that the the biggest change in them that I was involved with was to be you know they don't change that often they've been around for a long time thank you Arnie thanks great all right oh still up we are going to talk about the integrated guidance initiative another ode initiative but we're aligning that with our strategic planning process this year what I wanted to share with you this evening is the process that we're using to do the listening sessions this fall and I think um Steve Kelly from osba would be very proud of us because we're going to be talking about student data so if you look up the posters I've put out these are what I'm sharing with with students staff and families when we have these listening sessions
so I have it in the PowerPoint I was just going to walk you through what's going on so you are familiar with the data and the process of the listing session data we're collecting this fall then we'll be part of our needs assessment that we bring to the strategic planning work group when we convene it hopefully starting in December and Equity advisory committee which is next on region and we'll get to that in a minute but I wanted to give you just to walk through the listing sessions so um there are required groups of students in the legislation uh required groups of students um what the state has legally defined as under represented groups that specifically we need to be doing Outreach and engagement of their voice in this process so we've started that um
process I've had a couple of listing sessions with families I have another listening session with Madison and sunset tomorrow night and I'm going to start going in this different student groups in the high school there are arranging me to meet with different groups like students at the arc CTE students students with disabilities um the leadership class of going to the journalism class we're going to um Casey is getting a group of students with diverse um racial and ethnic backgrounds for me so I'm just I'm just going out and doing these listening sessions and what I start with and it's the far poster down here you can't read it because the font's so small these are the six areas um of the six grants that are being integrated by um the state into the integrative initiative
so the idea of being is I walk through each of these grants the student investment account the high school Success measure 98 um the Career Technical education fundings the uh um the everyday matters attendance work and the continuous Improvement plan there's six grants what I what we've done is we've put together a summary of the major initiatives that is that are currently being funded by these Grant sources with the idea that we think it's really important that that people are stakeholders students staff and and families and community members understand what we're currently doing with the money while we're currently spending it um so giving them a backdrop of how that money is currently being said and then I walk them through part of this legislation there are five requirements five I'm tired five required um
longitudinal growth targets which are the outcome measures that we have to monitor and Report annually to Obe for these grandsons that we will be recording here and those posters represent those five outcome Majors so I see this as Baseline data from where we're going for our strategic plan um and these are required now local communities we can add more output measures if the board wants to add more these are the ones required and then school districts can add additional local measures if we would like and the five I I'm sharing with you first of all that pie chart the second one that David has over there I like to show the demographics of the district now since I've lived in um I've been working here at Coos Bay for the last 14 months I have
sometimes heard the comments that um there isn't racial diversity in our schools and the data simply doesn't um play that out we currently have 72 percent of our students are white so that means 28 of our students are students of color so 28 I mean that's a significant part of our school population so um I like to point that out so people understand the demographics in our schools the first longitudinal required outcome measure are is third grade reading and so I just put a little chart together um that shows the difference of the state average this is the state assessment on reading and it's in Green for the state of Oregon and then the purple is where we are so you can see the gap of where our third graders compared to the rest the
average across the state the next measure I'm just going to go through these we can I can answer any questions at the end the next measure is part of the requirements for these is that you have to disaggregate the data you have to break how different groups of students in your school district are doing so you can see is it is there a pattern or a gap between different groups and that's what we're looking at in this data so you'll see for example um the next one this is math sixth eighth grade math at the top this is proficiency and you gotta look at the percents 30 Statewide Oregon sixth through eighth graders are proficient now thirty percent that breaks my heart then you look where our students are doing and we're down at the
you know um 25 level on average for the district and then you can see the gaps in different groups and if you look down our lowest performing group we're talking 15 of our Hispanic students are proficient in middle school math I like I'm we need to have that conversation and what we want to do around this I think this is really important data for us now this is a snapshot point in time covered data one piece of data totally get that but I think it raises questions for us to look into and to think about next one is the same um in terms of breaking out where students are um are you doing it for me thank you I can't drive in Milwaukee um this is a percent of students overall for all the students
who are taking the ELA State assessments and again we do have one group of students that's performing higher than the state average which is our Asian students so that's exciting we have we do have a group that's performing above the state average which we should celebrate in a race but then you can look for example our our English language learner students and our students with disabilities there is a a huge gap yeah you can see the range the next longitudinal growth requirement um the outcome measure they require is looking at a percent of regular attenders um these are students who attend 90 or more of the time and this is you can see longitudinally um where we've been um and then you can see the impact of covid like if you look at the downward
Trend um you can see all groups went down during covet attendance went way down so how do we get back up to where we work and you can still see gaps among different groups of students so um that's how this is presented that's presented longitudinally so we can see some Trend data and um you can see the differences in different groups the next required outcome measure is percent of students um in ninth grade on track to graduate and the definition of a student who is on track to graduate and by the end of their ninth grade year is having six credits or more and what the data shows is that the ninth grader ends ninth grade with six or more credits the high probability they're going to graduate so the idea is you don't wait
until their senior year and figure how many credits they need to graduate you monitor it when they're first years through their ninth graders and you make sure that we have like summer school credit recovery opportunities we get them back on track if you do it early they're going to graduate so this is I see this is a really critical critical measure for us to make sure we're going to get our students past that finish line with their diploma um the next required measure is our four-year on-time graduation rate so this is a cohort measure of of students that we have that stayed all four years started um you can see we're below the state average um and you can see some of the biggest gaps we experience um particularly our students with with disabilities so
um and then the final required outcome measure is our five-year High School completion rate and this the fighter the difference between a graduation rate and the completion rate completion rate is a fifth year you can also include geds and modified diplomas so it looks you know the the data is inclusive of a lot more students um so you can see where I think this is something to celebrate look at our Hispanic Latino students above the state average um last year so I mean like we have some things to celebrate here and I think there's some real opportunities so I share this data quickly and then um open it up with the listening sessions go look at the data ask questions um like Chad's been going to several of these with me um the building administrators
have been there with me we can talk to parents talk to staff ask answer any questions and then we ask them two questions that we're collecting data on um what do you think the district is doing well and should keep doing and we're collecting all of that data in a nice spreadsheet or coding it this is where my qualitative research comes in handy and then the second question is what should the highest priorities of the district be moving forward and so we're going to be able to code all of that and present the the most frequent the highest priorities that we're hearing from the community moving forward to help give that information to the strategic planning work group as we think about what our goals um what we want to achieve over the next four
years in our priorities so that's the process for now the listening sessions but I wanted you to be aware of all this data we're sharing and what data we're collecting wonderful any questions all right you're going to be forced by the end of this I might like to talk a little bit it doesn't it doesn't look like you know we do obviously really see a drop off for some of the coke around the coke last two years so it'd be interest to see you know what what looks like for the next yeah I mean do we do we look at a nice comeback or is there a slow a more slow return yeah and I see this is Baseline Baseline at the starting point for your plan measures I did notice I think it's on
the long time graduation is missing a year is that because of covert as well yeah they didn't report one year yeah there was the attendance that I don't think they reported one year okay that's been missing I think I think it's the attendance is missing here they just the first year when we were in the complete shutdown for covert the state didn't even report because a tenants basically a kid logged on they marked a peasant and the numbers are so um yeah off that they just didn't ask that one 1920s missing yeah 1920s missing for Independence and and uh for your graduation is it awesome yeah maybe that's um the data analysts error well we all have to check that one yeah okay I I sure I made a mistake excited all right educational Equity
advisor okay so at the last um board meeting you all voted that we could um um jump start the process for Senate Bill 732 where it's requiring an uh Equity advisory committee because part of the requirements for this um ode integrated initiative is to have an equity committee review the needs assessment and review the data to give recommendations so it's going to kill as we said feed two birds with one scone um multiple purposes um so what we've done I told you at the last minute that I would come back with a process for us to be able to select it again I have um provided you a powerpoint which I will not go through but I you know I attended that meeting in Salem I went to the session on bringing purpose to Senate
Bill 732 that OD just presented about the requirements around implementing it so if you're interested um I did I just want to highlight because I I forget which page it's on one of these Pages um says unfortunately part of the legislation um it's I'm thinking what you're thinking yes it's my name and then the line across it yeah yeah the board cannot serve on the equity advisory committee and okay you will send me an email I said can you tell my board they can't a few members on it they said they will do that for me um so I didn't want you to think I was excluding if they I asked to rational and there are some um they the legislation the rationale was that people who historically haven't been invited to the table can
feel intimidated by officials absolutely um so they want this to be truly a safe space for people to share and then bring their recommendations forward to the board so that was their restaurant [Laughter] um so I did meet um two weeks ago the district we do have our diversity equity and inclusion group and I brought this issue around what would be the best way to do um Outreach because this committee over half the committee needs to be from people represented underrepresented groups that's in the legislation so we're going to have to do some really targeted Outreach to groups to make sure that we are have a diverse group on the equity advisory committee and I received wonderful feedback um so instead of calling it an application process we're going to call it a nomination process
so um I was shared with me some of the members of the group felt that there are some members of the community that may not apply maybe we're going to make sure we translate it into Spanish maybe they don't feel comfortable filling out a written form that that kind of stuff so that we're going to do instead of someone who is required to apply someone can nominate someone else and fill out the nomination form on their behalf um and I put in I actually borrowed from Salem Kaiser they've already formed theirs and they had an application process even though we're getting nomination and I have a sample the questions will ask people who are nominating others so if you have any suggestions around um questions but I want to get that posted this week by
Friday I'm hoping to get that posted from October 14th to November 7th have that window for soliciting nominations so we can get this group come back to the board meeting next month and um it's supposed to in legislation it's a joint selection process with the superintendent and a board so we'll come back I'll bring you a slate for you all to consider and we can agree on who we want on that committee because I want them to start in December looking at this data so we've got to get it convened pretty quickly but so I just typed up a suggested process and a sample nomination form and I I'd like um to get this process started on Friday so we can start recruiting and nominating and getting the people to serve on it right any
other questions comments so since the board can't be on the committee can we nominate somebody yeah I am Dave and I thought about that that's funny you asked I didn't have a slot in here who the nominator was I got the name of the person and contact information of who's being nominated because clearly we need to be able to reach out to him but I do think it would be fair let's add who nominated you because if we cold call someone they didn't know they were nominated they have no idea who dominated them that'll be a little absolutely and I have that written that way now which someone you're not a A-frame for the students um high school students are new was there any programs that I have maybe that little boy that invited you
to lunch you know let me look into I don't think there was an age cry but we were looking at mostly secondary age like um 7 through 12. um just because once you start getting into these conversations around data and um policy recommendations we thought developmentally grades 7 through 12 would be developmentally appropriate for getting great for student voice than student input that's cool that's why you put it on the superintendent update on stuff yes we are all right board member highlights thank you because I know you always have something robotics yes I know right all right so I'll do some some highlights actually uh I won't talk about robotics I did a couple things this last month that are sort of tangentially related to our board work um the first one is I was
at an innovation committee meeting over at DHS they've got a small group of different stakeholders who deal with early childhood education and and child abuse um I did hear some good things about our preschool promise program and extra classrooms being added to that I believe Carly Ainsworth is in those meetings as well and I unfortunately wasn't able to attend but there DHS is hosting this group and I believe their intent is to take a very high level systems view of the whole organization and sort of rework it a little bit so they can be more proactive rather than reactive when when dealing with community members and to be um more as well diverse and culturally responsive um the other thing I did this month I was at the Oregon Association of relief nurseries Summit another
yearly Summit and the focus of that was diversity equity and inclusion as well so knowing that um we're going to have to have our Dei committee for a lot of these state grants and monies and reports and things I was you know sure to keep an eye out for that and and actually learned a lot of interesting things about the the process and and how um organizations can be more inclusive and how that can help them along in their Innovation and what they're doing so I look forward to being able to apply some of that knowledge and possibly sharing that out as well thank you Adrian it's great to have you with the relief nurseries and again having the early childhood education from all that work all right anybody else Diane and then Arnie um
I was able to attend the Marshfield Junior High School open house um it was pretty awesome and I was really impressed with the amount of parents um and the kids dragging their parents from classroom to classroom um that was really great um look like for the most part all the teachers were there everybody was there um seen a lot of teachers signing up for different notifications and making sure they had access to the Google classrooms and all of that good stuff so that was really great and then I had an opportunity um also to um hear Karis present this information and I loved this because I feel like this you can digest um and so I thought this was really great um sometimes I have a hard time digesting some of this so um I
really love this I felt like it was really easy and simple for people to navigate and understand and um so that was really that was really great and um just like with the overall I don't know if they had any numbers but it seemed like there was a lot of people there and it was impressive and the kids were proud of their school and they were proud to uh bring their parents there and having that brand new school and those nice classrooms and those desks that move around and and really just proud of showing off um where they're learning so I was really impressed with the event I thought it was great it was so awesome to see so many families they're um and awesome to sit on you know and I'm curious to get
her her presentation so that was really great and then I just had a quicker opportunity to work confessions um I think the best part of that was um with the booster club was it was I might get this to accept either science National Honor Society or is it national science Honor Society I don't know but um it was the honest Society for science um the kiddos back there were earning money for their program and they were just impressed with kids um there was a girl in there that was graduating as a junior and then just hearing them talk about their future and their plans and everything that they do and how invested they are in their community in their schools and their grades it was just it was nice for me to get in there
with the students and be able to have that interaction even if we were serving potatoes and pretzels so it was it was really great and um I really appreciated the opportunity and to work with the group of students thank you Diane Army yeah I really appreciated having the open houses and going through the one of these side there was a lot of people there I was very impressed with the number people wanted to see what was going on they want to see the new buildings and I think I'm happy we did that and I will look forward to seeing the next couple that are going to come along um went to site Council this month um out at my new school um which is sunset that went really well and it's nice to see the
teachers and talk to the people and see what's going on and what the plans are so I have enjoyed that went to lunch today and National lunch school lunch school lunch week um and also out of sunset because that's that's what I'm working on again the kids are really great and I got introduced to each one as a board member and that I had been a senator and so all these kids and and the principal invited me invited me the kids to ask any question they wanted so they did they are elementary kids and it was third fourth and fifth grade that I went to so some of the kids know how old I am and how many times I was here and that was shocking that I could still walk so anyway it's really
interesting um I think because they have different impressions of older people so it was really nice and they a few asked about being a senator and other kinds of things go to high school so it was uh it was a really enjoyable time and I you forget how important it is to get out to the school so I'm happy you're doing your Wednesday thing and I'm happy I got to go and get to answer questions for from a whole bunch of young people who were in our district and I I felt really good and I think someone else mentioned it earlier the organization at lunch is really impressive because they you know the third graders come in they have certain desks they can stay so they don't have to clean all the debts and then
as they're getting up the fourth the next grade is coming in and they have their separate deaths and they and it was I thought it really pretty good and the kids were behaving exceptionally well they had not necessarily been doing that well this year um so you know when the person said uh I need your attention they all raised their hand and looked and I thought okay they're teaching them some skills to make it organized so they really did quiet down she gave him a lot of positive reinforcement for having done it this week since they hadn't done so well last week it's kind of interesting to see how we have to go about helping kids navigate um this strange thing called schools it's not like they're at home so I I appreciated the opportunity
to do that thanks oh my goodness I'm glad you're walking in I feel a little older by the time I love kids best things that's the best questions so um I also gotta go to the open house at east side and I've met with a number of teachers and uh got to see all their setups and how alike and same time individualized the classrooms are with their different personalities and um that was really fun and then just to them walking me through what their day was like and one of the gals had graduated with my daughter I was like what could be old enough to be a teacher so um yeah it was really nice and then this Friday I get to go lunch at destinations and we're at Blossom Gulch and so I'm excited
about that and visit the preschool so yay I'm gonna go see those little ones and then I saw Kevin your hand goes up so yeah so I had lunch over at melakoma school today and like Garner was saying that you know the stuff some of the questions they have for me is kind of funny one of the kids asked if I was the principal's dad and I think he's a couple years older than me it was it was your kid Kim yeah no no and then and then I was walking through from the P from Outdoors to go in so like all the little kids are lined up I just walked in the row with him and another kid leaned back and asked me what grade I was in what grade are you in like
yeah at the same time yeah I just said 13th but that's a bunch of kids that I've coached over time that I've maybe seen for a while or have seen and just being in a different environment it's neat to see how they react and and uh even if they recognize me or not and uh so I had to end up staying through three or four lunges I usually don't have a lunch only one time but I stay there the whole time and it's neat to see all the kids getting together like you're saying being polite and sharing there was no food fights or anything like that I had some broccoli I tried to trade into a girl that brought a brownie and that did not fly but yeah it was fun and I look forward
to do it more yep that's it for me thank you I guess I'll just um you know I've been working on some things like I talked to Floyd montpel I didn't work at the junior high and try to look at some kind of peer vectoring program maybe come do something that I really appreciate what you said about you know um you know youth are not doing very well sometimes and you know there's studies after after post covet show you they're not doing well um and so I'm going to find a way to help I've been to a couple of funerals with young people of suicide and it's always amazing to me that people that know are their peer group more than the adults and so I'm trying to find ways that maybe people we could
train computers to be um give them some instructions about how to help support their friends around them because that's likely where the rubber is going to beat the road but by the time adults find out sometimes it's too late so um so I'm working on on trying to organize the things with with some of my connections to see if we can get something that going and I'm really thinking the junior high is a good age because sometimes High School is a little bit too late sometimes the swim lessons can get started early on and I'm hoping that will be support for youth um the other thing though that also talked a little bit about is the the math scores are a little discussing could be as a as a math engineer type person I really
do not like that uh and so you know we talked a little bit about that might be helpful I guess they have sort of required tutoring which was not well served as you can imagine required tutoring is not something that anybody signed up for so I don't know there's a different strategy um really I was a little bit kind of curious about is that you know we we didn't let Volunteers in schools over two years basically and like are we getting on board with letting that happen again and how does that how do we encourage that how do we support that as well so that was also something that I I took away from thank you David all right um next up we can we get to our action items is our report from policy
committee which is we need we went through a number of first three meetings and let's see we went through ACB every student belongs with that one we just made some recognize some title changes and the looks of symbols of hate there was AC bar and that was charista's um biased incident complete procedure and I don't think there was any needs for change on that one GBL Personnel records uh the chances included a timeline of 20 days for responses to a respected employers requests issued under a couple RS 339.374 subsection one subsection B so and there's other changes there i g b i yes I bilingual education and the change to language purpose and effect remain the same and electronic communication systems we've visited a lot a lot of these um policies over and over and
over again it seems like there's always new sometimes they're big changes and sometimes they're just uh changing pronouns or adding a thought so this one was change in language to include social media because we didn't have social media in there um on the electronics Communication System Pi igb AAR and whether it's Harris electronic communications the changes of group minor language changes and JB equals opportunity uh changes included the non-retaliation clause for those who are reporting their faith in information that the student loses evidence of violation of state or federal law rule or regulation and JFC student conduct committee chose to emit a bracket it was um pretty much saying the same thing that we had already said earlier and it was redundant so anytime we can make policies clear and more concise we typically ought
to do that and the last policy we did the first reading on is jfcj weapons in schools and that one is just for the students so um that one was I think we just left that one the way it was so do we have any questions by the way the package next to your big packet is the clean policies and more needs to be adopted as it we're not adopting any policies so and um now we are up to action items to consider so we need to adopt our board superintendent working agreements timeline and evaluation standards it looks like this one is under one we want to do them all separately or do we want to do this all as one motion should probably go separate yeah okay that's what Steve Kelly we went back
to his email recommendations all right so do I hear a motion for the working agreement probably through the working agreement on a120 great school year I guess it is it's just 20 22 20 23. okay okay yes 2022 2023. thank you Ernie enjoy your second second done thank you Kevin all right is there any discussion all right let's do a vote David hi Artie all right I figured these could be the ones that are not in general Adria thank you hi Kevin Diane hi can I go I as well commission passes and next up do I hear emotions the timeline to make the militant to approve the timeline thank you Kevin I will second off that thank you Army any discussion on the timeline all right David all right all right Adrian all right Kevin
yeah I'm looking at it for those on the screen and can my eye motion carries and evaluation standards a movie that we approved the superintendent evaluation of Standards okay thank you David foreign all right um number two we have adopt ell curriculum okay yeah but God is coming to the podium good evening at the end of the last year when I asked you to adopt the ELA curriculum um I had let you know that we are still working on the yellow curriculum inside county is sometime this year we've completed the process um I had Randy picks and Mark Lawrence working on the ell materials and we've selected cengage learning ELO materials and it's a little bit different product at the different great bands um I think you have that in your board pocket correct the
materials and that has the information that I'm supposed to present to you at the time of adoption and these were materials that were on the official ode adoption list um over this time why we need a little bit more time is we are piloting the materials we also wanted to discuss the materials with all of the parents that might be impacted by this um the guys did that during para conference time and then we also needed to have a community comment um period which we did just in the last week and allowed anybody in the community to come in set a meeting with one of those two guys and ask questions or comments I have Randy Pitts here tonight if you have any specific questions about the materials I see a little bit more in
the know than I am as using them in terms of using them firsthand and speaking directly with the parents and community members Health materials any questions about the materials not about the materials but did you did you get any Community feedback for anybody who definitely um because when it happened it helped me out a little bit here we only had Randy over there yeah come on all right please get on up there all right we did it we didn't really get any computer Community feedback we put it on the website to reach out to us we only had two people contact us and their teachers their spec teacher a sped teacher and um Nea over at um the junior high it's Katie and Deb done lost and they just said they liked it and and
they're very interested in it I have this from Mark looks Relic this looks relevant to my sped students I appreciate the use of use and explanation of academic language I would like to find ways to help and monitor lessons so that's that's all she says so that's all the community really participated with that but then the parents oh during oh and during the the kickoff week of course and the parents it was just general things like yeah it looks nice it looks engaging I'm positive but then again I'm the one presenting it to them so I just want to have a positive so yeah they they all like that the good news here though is we spoke to almost every parent firsthand that this impacts and we're talking about what percentage of parents oh I'd
have to be high 90s I mean I wouldn't you know around 90 at least because we had one-on-one meetings so when I mentioned community members I just met the public at large not necessarily people that are directly Affiliated but the people that are directly at a high percentage in contacts with those folks that's great thank you so they came to the class me I came to I came there for my sins Mark was there with it so he translated that's awesome I teach in Sunset Madison and markings is at the other schools so that's how we did that so are we getting multiple languages now I mean so many school districts so that working with have one eight different languages and so on are we mostly expensive is that what it is so our Ells
yes our Ells are mostly speak Spanish mostly come from Mexico we have some from we have one family from um from India they speak uh Andy we have a family from Belarus another family came here from Ukraine that's both those are this year let's see here I'm trying to think what other nations we have here I think that's about it yeah India Belarus of course Mexico and I'm trying to think of that I think that's it yeah so for a town our size like Harris was saying I feel that's quite impressive that is yeah it's been interesting Cottage Grove Lincoln County and development all the big masses of indigenous speaking people from Latin America yeah that that you see a lot of this especially in the urban areas uh you'll get a family from Latin
America there than in Latin Latin America the native the Native Americans don't necessarily speak Spanish this is this is cultural capital in Latin America right I speak Spanish whereas here our Native Americans speak English and they're trying to reclaim their original languages it's different down there yeah yeah so that's a very fascinating piece right there yeah and that and that does represent a very those those districts are I'm sure struggling with that yeah because who's going to translate they're funny people who come from that region who still speak the language they've been I mean I know in Lincoln County they've been successful in getting a few of those people to help them but it's it is really hard you're right that's impressive or death wow yeah great point after trying the materials Randy this is
the question that we didn't ask but I'll ask Randy in trying these materials out why did we select these materials over some of the others so for because with this it's the same it's the same curriculum we have now and the bottom line is suiting and engaging the stories are just flat out interesting they get the stories from National Geographic and it alternates between science and social studies it also alternates between fiction and non-fiction it's very well balanced but the kids are never better never bored they love the class so that's why I over I I sorry to ask you to repeat yourself you said that Ells were above average in some area I saw they were horrible yeah I need that data the graduation the graduation The Five-Year graduation rate is yeah that should
be celebrated yeah absolutely yeah that's Mark doing that I like how you set up that question Chad other thoughts or questions sounds like we need an emotion so what um which part is which part of the curriculum exactly are we being asked about it's the bottom three the cengage products which is reach higher Stars impact and pathways you see today's date on those three oh Curriculum by cengage learning that's the retired Stars impacting Pathways thank you David for your reading glasses I'll second that thank you any other discussion or questions all right David all right oh we've got one more in the new working agreement just to give you a heads up at the end of the agendas moving forward we'll have um items uh that the board would like to possibly request for future
meetings so there will be at the end of the meeting if any of the board members want to request it's one of our working agreements that that we add that leaderboard leadership when we put that agenda together add and two other board members need to agree and then we put on so the next board meeting you'll see a new agenda item at the end if you have anything you would like the board either an item for information or a native fraction there'll be a place for you all to be able to
