is me perfect yes it is it's it's a pleasure to recognize these five people whom I have worked with for a long time in a school district some longer than others and there's a couple on this list that I even went to school with way back when in the Coos Bay School District and another one whose brother was a classmate of mine and so it's an honor for me to recognize each and every one of these for their service to the Coos Bay School District all five of them outstanding awesome teachers and probably probably the biggest thing I could say is they're just good people and I I count them as as friends as well as colleagues the first one I'd like to recognize on my list is Anna ball Anna has been a teacher
at Mill coma at 13 years she was there when I was principal the first time around the second time around and she has been a solid member of the mill coma staff for a long long time and it's my pleasure - it's not my pleasure to announce her retirement because I just assumed not announced it I'd rather have these people still working sorry sorry Doug but I need you to keep going but that's okay so Anna ball from Mill coma 13 years in the district next up on the list with third with 26 years in our district 30 years in education is doug fendle doug has been a longtime teaching companion and colleague of mine as well as he went on to the high school to teach PE around the same time I moved up
there in the administration and just been a pleasure to work with Doug over the years we've got a lot of good stories we always used to say in a staff room that someday one of us is going to write a book about all the stories and so he's going to have the time so I think he might beat me to the punch and write in those stories but I'm going to give each one of them a chance that are on here to speak in a moment next one up with 30 years in Coos Bay School District Linda George another another great colleague and friend Linda was a year ahead of me in school graduated at Marshfield in 1980 she has been a solid solid member of the of the Coos Bay School District for 430
years and another one they that I don't take pleasure in saying congratulations on your retirement but I will say it next up Michelle Newsome 31 years in a coop a school district currently teaching at Madison again another another teacher has just been outstanding in our district and just a solid individual as has represented every school she has worked at 100% and you know I know Madison is going to miss Michelle greatly moving into next year and then the last one on the list with 32 years in the district April hoy April a classmate of mine going through school and Marshfield she was actually I think a milk coma Mustang but I was a Marshfield junior higher but classmates at Marshfield high school graduated together 1981 she has been a solid rock in our district as
a teacher elementary teacher and you know the the families all of these people the families and the kids are going to miss them tremendously we are going to feel a void when we come back to school in the fall and these five people are not part of our staffs but for sure the families and the kids are going to feel a huge void when when next fall rolls around but I just want to say congratulations to all five of you outstanding careers I'm envious of you right now but at the same time I'm also a little ticked off at you for going out the door and leaving me behind but I wish you the best I wish you well in your retirement and I'd like to open it up now to the five of you
if you if you want to say something you will be getting something from me in the mail a little something from the district just to celebrate your your efforts in your years of service we couldn't have the the cool file flower baskets we made last year that the shop class and the manufacturing class put together but I will be sending you something in the mail but anybody want to go first come on Doug you want to talk I know I'm not a big public speaker here by any means but I bought memories of teaching in this school district just the people teachers the students the parents I always have a huge part of my heart just I I was told early on that kids aren't gonna remember what you taught them but they're gonna remember
how you treated them and I tried to to try to get the kids to open up in class and and get to know one another and create those memories and those are the things I'm most proud of so I I I don't know why you're still there Brian you should be out there enjoying life too but I plan to be traveling and I need to fix up my house eventually plan to move over to seventh or again but I'll always remember Coos Bay love love this area and love the people here thank you Doug I got a little work yet to do so I'll see you in a while it was next I see Anna I had a your your muted there you go there we go hi Brian thank you for hiring me many
many many years ago it's been a wonderful experience I have a lot of fond memories to take into retirement with me thank you where's Linda Georgia she on there April lawyer she'll Newsom any of them okay well congratulations to to all the retirees you've earned it you uh you yep I hope you have a great time in retirement and really enjoy it all right thank you very much thank you Brian and yes thank you to all of our retirees you guys well deserved well deserved moving on here do we have our student representative with us tonight I don't see her on here so when we don't have miss Patterson on line with us I did see that she received the OSB a promise scholarship during the awards assembly and that was the scholarship that we
earned as a school board for doing training through OSP a promise of Oregon program they did rename that I don't know what it's called now but it's now sort of a memorial type of program but best wishes to miss Patterson there and hopefully if she can she'll join us or watch this later on the livestream so next up we have a proposal from the lighthouse school hey guys can you hear me okay excellent I had Shelby send out a document earlier this week I hope you were able to look over it you know our biggest thing as we go into next year really we're looking at sustainability and we we have to financially be able to fill classrooms and as it is now sponsoring districts typically have a priority as far as enrollment you know
when lighthouse was created and when we were with North End we had about fifty five percent North End kids forty five percent non district kids with the bulk of that forty five percent being Coos Bay kids it was a really good mix and it helped I think it served both districts right now we're about eighty-five Coos Bay 85% Coos Bay kids so we really are looking at getting back to that mix and as it is now the coos bay kids those cohorts are moving moving through non district kids that are coming especially to our upper grades there's a great chance that they're gonna stay with their peers and matriculate into Marshfield which is you know that's a benefit for for coos bay but for this next year I'm we're proposing an addendum that I'll draw
up for the board to really vote on to remove that sponsoring district priority which would allow us to be able to work down our waiting lists and not be held up on akuze based student whose family might say we really want our child to go to lighthouse but right now we're feel full fearful of the pandemic we have to hold that spot we cannot move down that list to anybody else and if we get a class of you know 12 or 13 kids when we need 26 that doesn't even pay for that instructor in a nutshell that's what it is and I I have a board member at Lisa Lidge s she's also here as well as John Gibson our current board president and I would open it up to questions to the board okay
well I'll go first here we read through the document that you sent about changing the language and it was presented to us basically as an MOU although there isn't any suggested language specific language changes it's just this is what we would like to change and these are the reasons why like you just stated to all of us so it seems like the the basic is you just want to get rid of the preference for ku space students going through the selection process right right okay so I generally okay so I've gone through the the language in the Charter and then there's the ORS statutes that talk about eligibility and the you know they don't really say that you have to give preference to District students but it's sort of implied in some of the language
if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spots and it mentions that you have to do a lottery process or something similar but it only mentions if there are more district in district applicants than available spots it doesn't mention about out of district applicants or the number of applicants in total so it sort of implies that you have to give preference to our district students but it doesn't it doesn't say it outright so it wasn't clear to me in terms of the legal language if that was the case or not and that's definitely something that that we should look into because obviously we don't have the ability to rewrite the ORS as maybe some of the details in there but what I'm expecting from lighthouse is for you guys to draft up what
your proposed language changes would be and then present them back to to us so we can get a look at that and and see if there's anything else that we need to talk about yeah absolutely and and that's a good point Adrienne as it is now for our incoming kindergarten classes I think out of 71 families that applied for incoming kindergarten spots of 24 half of those there's already siblings so for 12 spots I think there was only one north den family maybe one Reedsport family that applied for that all the rest were coos bay and and that's that's kind of the point that to where you're talking about there's four other K through eight public charter schools that are Waldorf inspired like us in the state Portland Eugene Medford you know they draw from
kids all across different districts and so there's there's a precedent there we've just never investigated that but like our thing is you know we got to survive next year we got to have butts in the seats one way or the other and that's really the basics of of us really wanting to be able to open it up to everybody is just so that we can sustain ourselves so I understand that you're gonna have a board meeting later this month I will I'll have some language in there for that actually is a proposal that the board could vote on okay excellent anybody else with questions for weight or lighthouse clear you how many how many applicants do you have and how many of you accept or I mean are you typically in the situation where you
are having to turn down yeah yeah we have we had to increase our seats in the 1st through 4th grade from 25 to 26 our Charter allows us to go up up to 27 and we've only gone up to that number in the event that we have to retain a child especially in the primary grades from the year before and so I could tell you our current second grade class we have a an enrollment of 26 in that classroom and probably another I mean that's our highest I think 67 or 68 kids on the waiting list and so typically those kids you know they won't even get a chance to get into lighthouse until 6:00 or seventh grade and by then they've already built friendships and and cohorts within their own groups of friends or
you know they're at sunset or melanoma matriculating into the to the middle school and so like I say our biggest saying is just being able to put butts in the seats I guess not maybe understanding so if you have to turn down the number of kids is it really ever been a problem from the seats or is it more about trying to find a more representative sample of our community I'm going into this next year our budget committee is really not making any forecasts or guesses on anything we know what we need to be sustainable and to you know to burn down a list we're hopeful that yeah there's enough to to bring in to sustain it but you know we don't we don't want to be left hanging we don't want to leave you
guys hanging so removing that that barrier of having district sponsored kids having a priority relieves the fact of having to go through a list twice and and like I say this this would be just a temporary thing for one year it's about us kind of being able to sustain ourselves really thank you I don't know that answer your question without a question for for Brian just in terms of the district perspective on this well we've had we've had a few conversations about this topic and and and discussed it obviously obviously lighthouse has been a a good port part of our district since they've come in you know I I do worry about them not having enough kids on the list I guess a question I might have Wade that I didn't ask before was you
mentioned when you get to the waitlist and you and you come to that goose bake kid and they say they really want to but they really don't want to come back to school yet why couldn't you just go to the next kid down the line all right we haven't received guidance on how that's going to work or the kind of challenge that that family might have to the lottery process it's it's been very competition oriented I've had families actually lie on their application to get their child into a different grade level than they should be in just to get to the school I mean you know you know that's borderline neglect in my opinion and so we're this is kind of us really wanting to be transparent and really wanting to be safe but as
you guys know our our budget is gonna take an incredible hit this year and so far I'm not so sure we're gonna lose people or lose in our case we lose people we lose programs and so the one thing that we cannot rely on is all of our parents coming back even parents on the waiting list regardless of district it's just so up in the air that we can't you know we don't want to ask for you know a lower rent payment from you guys we don't want to have to go there this is kind of a proactive step about the best one that we can take to make sure that we're not only a good steward of the building but also we're gonna be able to sustain ourselves and it's like I say there's
just so many unknowns that makes it crazy but we have to play it safe and and we don't want to be a hindrance at all you know and David to answer your question you know as a district I don't see an issue with with moving this way in temporarily and allowing that I would just you know I would maybe want something in there that the said something about the fact that there was a minimum amount of Koopa Kids right that she would be attending I would I wouldn't want to see this drop drop off the map and have it become the majority of kids outside our history because we really haven't in the first four years we really haven't seen a huge amount of 8th graders from other districts coming to Marshfield with their cohort
and that's you know that's probably because it's brand new I could see that happening when they've been with kids for for eight years and been with their friends rather than been there for one or two years bran one of the things I wanted to mention is that today if someone by the way it's John today if someone was on the waiting list and they we called them and said ok we've got a spot open for you and they told us we were interested in the spot they would basically go to the bottom of the wait list so one of the things that we kind of want to prevent is that if you have a fair number of people that say eight maybe we would be interested in going but not under the current conditions you
know not under the current situation that we're under they would end up on the bottom of the list well if you've got 60 kids on a list like we have in second grade that means you don't ever get to come to lighthouse and so a lot of these people would end up giving up their slot just by definition of the way that process works and we don't have a good answer like you could freeze the list right and just move down until you found somebody to fill a spot you could you know there's multiple different things but it's also new right we we've run the lottery process the way we've run it for 14 years it's it's plenty complicated enough as it is right now to add the additional layer of we've got maybe a
North Bend kid that's down the list and we have multiple kids that jump in front but if you launch one kid in now they've got sibling status so a sibling gets a priority as well so if you have a North bender that has three siblings in the lower grades they automatically go to the top of that list so you can kind of see how complicated it gets pretty quickly and all we're saying is don't tie the hands we don't we would prefer not to have our hands tied and next year to be able to fulfill it our original responses from parents surveyed tells me that we're gonna see seventeen to twenty percent of people that have our concern about coming back to school next year I suspect you guys are gonna see the same kind
of numbers and if we don't if we're not capable of providing either a blended format that they can feel comfortable with continue to deliver the same lighthouse experience along with specialties right where there's music attached and there's art attached and they're Spanish attached all of those things are gonna have to be comprehensive and yet we need to be able to bring it in a format like we're on tonight and that's complicated in of itself so it's just a matter of where you spend all your horsepower at and this would be one of those areas where I think it would just be helpful for us if we didn't have to explore multiple different ways of trying to figure out how to do this next year to abide with this priority status I have some questions when
it's time is this okay it's time alright okay so Wade are there any limitations on who applies to go to lighthouse can only Coos Bay students apply to go to lighthouse no we get kids with all kinds of challenges all kinds of residency apply all the time yep okay so you get your master list but right now what we're saying is that you don't have enough Coos Bay students to fill your classrooms so the lottery would look like something like you'd put all your poos Bay kiddos in the lottery first is that how it kind of goes you pick out the openings for the classroom and what you want to do in the future is to put all the names in from all over and then pick right actually Kim it's as simple as that
we after our Parent Orientation they fill out a packet we put their names in an envelope and back in the day was Mary Ellen and I and we drew it out of a hat now it's much more complex we have to videotape it and have two other witnesses because people get like I say really competitive about it aku's Bay district kids are drawn first before any other non non-resident district kid and they're put in a separate envelope so and nine times out of ten will have already filled that classroom and a waiting list before we even get to the non district kids so it seems like it's more about kind of diversifying the school as well as if anybody's allowed to apply right now I mean keeping that you know up with marketing and letting
people know hey this is an option for everybody but probably you're thinking that people don't apply because they haven't gotten in in the past other districts because whose Bay fills it up is that what I'm hearing basically if when we go down our list and we option accused Bay family to take the spot and if they say no we want to be able to do move down that natural list and take whoever's next instead of recycling them back down to the list and being kind of hamstrung where they are at that list if we only have 14 kids in a classroom and we can't move down because that family has selected that spot but they don't feel comfortable having their kid on campus and they want to do an online platform with Oregon virtual or
winter Lakes you know we want to capture those kids or the kids below them I don't I don't want to see any more kids from the Bay Area Coos Bay or North then go into winter legs or to or be' this kind of opens it up to where at least we can get a population of those kids at lighthouse regardless of residency and so this would just be for next year I would only propose this for one year this time next year we have a charter renewal coming up and I would be open to putting this all out on the table I mean by then lighthouse school might have an online component similar to resource link to where you know we make a concerted effort to get those kids back from winter lake and coos
bay yeah you're getting kids back maybe only 5% ADM with this but that's better than nothing I I know I live in Bandhan and I I know the kids abandoned is losing to winter Lakes and I think we can do the same job that they do and we could do it for Coos Bay regardless of if they're a coos bay family or a North Bend family or a REIT support family or a Myrtle point we draw kids from everywhere okay thank you all right any other questions all right well thank you guys look forward to seeing what you come up with as an MOU I don't see that we're gonna have any big problems with this we're all kind of in the same boat wondering what's going to go on for next year you know
if we're gonna be able to open up our schools and have kids actually show up versus even if we do how many parents are gonna let their kids show up to school so that's all kind of a big unknown right now and you know best of luck for next year thank you all right thank you let's see yeah this is on our agenda for a vote that's that's correct we don't have an actual MOU it was just the information that you were sent in the board packet all right well sorry for the wait but we're gonna move on to the building and staff presentations and our school presentation for this month is Marshfield High School well thanks for having us we have the Marshfield High School Speech and Debate team today and I would like
to introduce their coach Kayla crook to lead us through the presentation Kayla hello so I have Maddie is going to go through just a slideshow of what we've done this year and brianna is gonna walk through also my leadership team is here I'm Kailyn D Connor record Titus Simon and I think that's about it and all of these fine people are going to be competing at Nationals next week also so that's pretty cool so Maddie is Maddie able to share her screen is that fine yes go ahead Maddie and Bri sorry when I put the presentation up I can't see everyone so can everybody see this looks good sweet Bree are you still there I'm not sure if she froze Maddy do you want to go ahead and start with south coast sure okay and
so our first tournament of the year is always our home tournament south coast or SoCo there's the picture of us all in the auditorium and that that tournament is always always a success for us and it's always a great way for the newbies to really dip their toe in the water and start figuring out what they want to do for the year next up the Phoenix Invitational I it's really hard to remember what happened at the beginning of the year but I remember that definitely being another fun easygoing tournament South Albany I personally was not able to attend but our team did a great job and you can see coach's child there in the picture being held by Joe Jackie me he's kind of our team mascot right now then the Ashland grizzly Invitational one
of the more competitive tournaments for sure Pacific University is a first major college tournament of the year and that's a lot more formal than the competition a lot more strict and that's always fun to do this is a picture with a Red Robin they're going to losing but the tournament was fun sure as well I guess the Grants Pass Invitational is a really cool tournament because they have their metal shop make the trophies and this year their theme was superheroes so you can see the little the x-men symbol and the Superman symbol on some of the trophies Maddie that is also the pentathlon and how many events did you do oh right talk about that yeah so my grands past holds the Logan will ultimate challenge where you have to do a minimum of five
events and maximum of seven events and I personally did six events and I placed I believe it was third ultimate challenge so that's really fun no free time whatsoever so in this picture you can see I'm absolutely done and ready to go home but it's it's still fun I'm sorry okay hey breeze back now I'll let you continue Maddie and then I'll pick up where you left off okay you although one of this is kind of the point in the season where we start getting ready for state and for Nationals so everyone is kind of perfected their pieces and for this tournament instead of first-place medals they gave us t-shirts so you can see me Connor heckard and tied assignment up in the front row with our nuovo t-shirts you want to take it brief
sure this was this was the point in the season where we were extremely fortunate and lucky but we were still able to finish our season in a sense right before we were about to leave to go to the national qualifying tournament I believe it was that Thursday that our governor announced that all school related trouble was was suspended for the time being and that there would be no more traveling school events at all for the rest of the school year and I just remember that night before it was canceled we were all practicing we were at the school in the classroom and we were just giving each other notes and help and and then right as we got into the parking lot I remember coach got a text saying it might all be canceled and
I remember that next day it was just heartbreaking because that night everyone was texting each other and asking to easeful even packed because we didn't know if we were going at that point but it was really heartbreaking and State got canceled and when we didn't get to go to knock falls because we thought that was the end of our season and being a senior it was especially heartbreaking because I thought that my speaking debate career has over I thought that was the last we had but luckily the NSTA was able to put together Nationals this year virtually which we're all really excited for as you can see here these are all if not almost all of our qualifier which is the most that we have had in a really long time which is really exciting
yes as I just said state was cancelled for due to the pandemic it was not only hard on the seniors it was hard on the whole entire team because had we gone they were all really driven to actually win because if we had you would have missed the record of placing the most banners in a row in the gym nope I'm not going it was really hard on the whole entire team but I'm hoping that next year they'll be able to still put a banner up by everything that's happened and maybe still semi get the most banners in a row if they'll allow it with all the circumstances given yes so here is our list of all of the national color fires from Marshfield Station of a team that is me at the top I
am going in formatic interpretation then we also have another senior Isabella Sperling who is also going in traumatic interpretation then we have Kaitlin Feeney and Branden areola Soto who are both seniors who are going in humorous interpretation and we have Ariana Mellon software going in program oral interpretation those will all be acting events if you will in terms as well as Madeline de Lyonne who is going an informative speaking then we have all the debates following we have the United States extent Forrest speaking which will be Connor Deckard who's a cleaner we have Cameron Miller going in Congress specifically in the House of Representatives we have my brother Josh McCown Kamini and his partner Lucas Stephens who are both sophomores going in public form debate as as Titus Simon was a junior and fellow senior
at Seoul Ramirez both going in world schools debate on two different themes slideshow yeah so our national online event will be happening we have to submit our final recordings for specific events this Friday in order for us to participate in it and all of the debates and XM speaking will be performed live in competition so hopefully that goes smoothly yeah we're all really excited and it takes place all of next week and hopefully we get some finalists really hoping for lucky we'll make it farther into our rounds overall despite a pandemic going on I think we still have this is still one of our stronger seasons and I'm really proud of the team and how we were able to get so many qualifiers despite everything that's going on thank you guys you want to take
it now just thank you very much for supporting our team and you know it has been a rough year for them and they did lose out on their state which is super important to them but I am echoing what Briana says you know we're very happy that sorry we're very happy that they get to end their season doing nationals it was a lot of work to get that going but but they're they're very they're excellent speakers and it showed through their qualification process and they beat out a lot of other schools in South Oregon in order to do this so I'm very very proud of them any questions so did I hear that this is going to be live streamed are we able to see this unfortunately the only parts that will be live-streamed are
the finals so if any of the kids make it to the final round yes they will be able to share their videos after after nationals we can't share it before then we can post on the website so right afterwards afterwards yes perfect exciting thank you guys for sharing thanks Kayla Congrats on a great year thank you I had the one last thing to say my wonderful coach also was named best coach in Southern Oregon of the years something along those lines and oh yeah she deserves a big hand for that a well-deserved honor all right well thank you everybody mr. Howard have anything else for Marshfield High School right now no I don't I just want to reiterate the fact that these are some of our best and brightest and if you look at the
the graduates over the last you know 15 or 20 years some of the most successful students that we have had graduate from Marshfield come out of the Speech and Debate program and that the qualities and skills that they learn from speech and debate and competing is it's just phenomenal and and it definitely translates into adult life and into their professional life so congratulations and Kayla works harder than any other coach that we have the hour so she spins and it's very apparent with the number of banners that are hanging in the gym so we're very proud of Kayla and her team all right thank you congratulations to the Speech and Debate team good luck at your national competition all right so moving on we've got our osea business and I believe we do have a
statement from our osea president yes so Valerie eyes line said that she wanted to share they had one applicant for their scholarship Danielle Pedro will receive $600 in the fall and that was all she had at the moment no outstanding okay well congratulations and CBE a business I believe they also submitted a statement for a meeting yes so Becky Crain submitted that cb8 CBE a recently finalized their district distance learning for all MoU with the district the process was time-consuming but smooth and most importantly allowed for all to begin discussions on how we can possibly better our situation in the future if we're faced with closures again currently we are preparing to kick off another school year in August by updating the list of committee members to work with admin as outlined in our contract
Becky speaking I personally am so grateful for the positive and collaborative work relationships we maintain with the district leaders and I'm so proud of how they respond to the pandemic emergency one team one goal thank you to all and wishing you all a well-deserved rest over the summer Becky Crain CBE a president excellent thank you and then did we get any submissions for public comment I didn't receive any emails for those I know they're supposed to be submitted to Friday before the meeting I did not get any public comment okay so anybody from the public if you're if you're watching and get a few views on our live stream if you have anything that's appropriate for public comment you can send those in to our board secretary the links are provided with the public meeting
notices and if you get those in the Friday before the meeting we can get those acknowledged and get responses to you as appropriate so that brings us to our district staff presentation starting with superintendent Rendell okay yeah it's hard to top the Speech and Debate team with with what they've got going on just wanted to give a huge shout out to everyone that was behind the scenes of graduation this past Saturday I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams how well this would have gone if you had asked me a month ago when we were starting to talk about doing something different for graduation I would have said you know I Drive through parades probably going to be a as a potential to be a complete and utter disaster but it really really went off
really really well and that's due to everybody that was behind the scenes I I sent out an email today of thinking thanking folks that were behind the scenes and there was a lot of them that were behind the scenes and making this event special we saw a lot of smiles we saw a lot of tears we saw a lot of happy people and we even had a pretty sizable amount of parents say we'd like to do this all the time because we don't like sitting in the bleachers and listening to all the speeches so you know it really you know what it did it was different but what it did was it gave each kid a special moment with their family for them to go across that stage and get their picture taken with their
family and parade through town with their family in the car and spend that special time and that really was was the goal and it was it was achieved and we wanted to make sure that each kid in the class of 2020 felt special and I think we I think we did it I think we did it so hats off to everybody involved it had to be probably even though for me and and many of you it was it was probably very long eight hours at Marshfield high school but had to be bar bar none the most fun I've had at graduation of any kind and so that was something to something truly to remember I do want to say that we're in the process today and tomorrow of collecting Chromebooks and textbooks and library books
we issued over a thousand Chromebooks to students during this last nine weeks we're hoping to get the majority of those back so that we can clean them up get them refurbished get them ready to go for next fall no matter what model were in educationally next fall we need those Chromebooks and so we're in the process now of of Chromebook collection today and and tomorrow and we'll see how many we get back I did want to talk a little bit about this week we are going to be you know lighthouse talked about the wait list and the end the drawing and the lottery drawing and how they've been doing that for 14 years we're going to enter into that process now for our own district as far as Arizona requests for for schools within our
district obviously that bright and shiny new East Side school is appealing to a lot of people however it only holds around 400 students nothing like the 600 that attend blossom so we're going to have to I'm sure we have some of those Arizona's own requests this Thursday we'll sit down well we'll take a look at those requests and we'll sort them as far as which ones fall into the category of meeting the requirements for our district policy and then we'll take those and we will put them into into a hat like like lighthouse has done over the years and we will have some representatives that aren't involved in those schools drawing those names it will create a a list and fill the open slots if we have any and then create a waiting list after
that and so that's going to be coming up this week and we already talked about retirees and was going to be the the fourth thing on my list to talk about retirees and and we talked a little bit about next year and next fall I sent out an email to everyone talking a little bit about it the guidance was supposed to come out today but I woke up this morning to an email from Cole Buell saying that that's been pushed to Wednesday they've got some things they've got to make sure that they run through there of people that they have to run through at the state level to make sure that the guidance is accurate and legal and and follows all of the requirements set out by the Oregon Health Authority number one the governor's
office number two and then everybody else in line after that so would expect that guidance on Wednesday like I said in the email we're gonna be in one of three places we're either going to be doing distance learning like we did this spring only better because I think we learned a lot of things this spring about distance learning some things that will allow us to improve that if we need to go there that's one end of the spectrum the other end of the spectrum is at school full time with everybody showing up in and walking through the doors in the fall my gut tells me that's going to be a tough one to pull off and then there's the in-between hybrid model of half the kids on campus at any given moment whether that be
a.m. p.m. whether that be every other day or there are some districts some states that are doing every other week so a student would go to school for a week and then it would be home doing school for a week and so those are all the different models all the different things that we've seen we're just kind of waiting for the official word from Eau de telling us this is this is your marching orders this is what you need to do if you're going to do this model these are the steps you have to take and these are the things that you have to ensure before you could say yes we're going to do this model and we're going to have some folks that that are going to say you know we really like school
at home and we would really like you to provide us a curriculum and the online platform to do that and we're going to go to work to provide that so that we don't lose kids to other districts or other online platforms we think we can do it we think we can do a good job of it and we're going to we're going to plan for it so you'll hear more from me when that guidance comes out I'll have an update for you via email and then at our next board meeting any questions Ryan can you tell us do you know how many yeah I know there was some difficulty engaging students during this last few months you have any rough numbers and how many people the kids fell off the map you know we're collecting
that information last week and this week as teachers wrap up with families and students we you know we were able to reach you know I'm not going to say a hundred percent because I know there was a handful that we couldn't couldn't reach but not very many that we didn't reach and make communication with and touch base with now that number is going to go down when you start talking about engaging them in in real meaningful education because of a variety of things you know Minoo whatever was happening at home at the time we heard from a from a handful of people that you know education is really not important to them right now because they they're they're really working hard just to get food on the table or they're really working hard just just
to keep their family together and and hold things together during this time so you know there there was a wide range I think there were those that were very successful and those that had so much success that they probably want to try it next year as they go into next fall we'll have a rough idea by by August I think or we've done a pretty good job of contacting people we're going to we're going to survey parents talk to parents over the summer and really nail down what they kind of are feeling about next fall and that that's gonna change depending on where we're at as a county you know as far as number of cases and and and that type of thing but we're still gathering that data David I would say that it's
I would say it's less than 10 percent that we were not able to engage to some former mentor another but I'll have a better number for you at the next board meeting thanks Bryan yep okay I'll mute now I think you're still at the Nexus for the Marshfield junior high school mascot oh my god I am still up thought I covered everything darn it yes Marcia junior mascot we put a we put a survey out to the public to staff to to get a feel for what people thought as far as a mascot name from Marshfield junior i we you know buy it buy probably double the amount of second place selections the overwhelming selection by folks was Buccaneers for Marshall Jr I you know there was some votes for for parents there was some
votes for what was something that a Riptide there were some other votes in there there were they were interesting there was one person that felt the need to take the survey 244 times and just write their name in there 244 times not sure what that was all about but you know it's it's interesting when you any time you do that we did it for the naming of Eastside school with the number one by far was Buccaneers so that's going to be the recommendation that that I'm going to ask you to consider the challenging part is trying to find an actual image of a Buccaneer that's age-appropriate for junior high and not something that looks a lot like a pirate so you know principal Floyd montiel has already floated a little bit of a picture of
a parent dressed up like a pirate and didn't get a lot of traction with people so I that was his first attempt he's gonna go back to the drawing board I think but that's not anything you need to vote on at this time but buccaneers was was the clear favorite in that next step is the inter district transfer numbers for 2020 2021 I'd like to propose that we not change those that we keep them the same that we've had for the last few years those numbers being 24 students kindergarten and first grade 25 students second and third grade 26 students fourth and fifth grade 27 students sixth and seventh grade and then 30 students for 8th through 12th grade core course subject areas that's what we've had the last few years seems to work I
don't see a need to change that so we'll that's what I'm recommending to you to devote on as far as inter-district transfer that's students coming in from outside the district to our district ok any questions for Brian all right thank you Brian let's see and I look forward to seeing the next version of the junior high mascot everything that just pops into my mind looks very cartoonish right now they straight off a Nickelodeon Boyd is such an artist I'm sure he'll handle it so next we've got our business services Candace okay I just want to remind everyone that we have our first budget meeting Wednesday night we do have a balanced proposed budget for you and I'm hopeful that tomorrow sometime we can get that proposed budget document out to all of you so that
you're able to take a look you know get your questions ready before our meeting on Wednesday night our first report that we have is our general fund expenditures by object nothing has has really changed much since our last meeting really all we're spending in is in our utilities and salaries some custodial supplies so nothing has really changed drastically on that report the next report the statement of revenues expenditures and changes for all fund balances you can see our general fund had an ending fund balance on May 31st of 9.2 million the month of June is when we spend a lot of money we have four payrolls that we do in the month of June so that balance will go down rather rapidly between wages and benefits our capital projects fund I just want to point
out have an ending fund balance of thirty 1.7 million Thursday is when we are scheduled to sell our last round bonds which is just under 20 million we're hopeful things are things are looking well you know people are buying bonds right now so we hope that we wake up Thursday and we have a great sale and have a good premium for that we are going to take the money a little bit differently than we did the first sale the first set of bonds we sold and we invested a majority of that money we're not going to do that with this 20 million we're actually going to take it and we're going to put it in the what we call the LG IP account it's a local government investment pool it's a for lack of a
better explanation it's a savings account that governments can put large amounts of money in we have a limit of fifty point five million dollars and right now that's paying better interest than any investments we can make so we're going to leave all of our other money in in investments there in maturities that come due every they're kind of staggered three and six month increments but we're not going to do that with this dispatch so that's exciting and a little bit of good news is we did get our rating from SP global and the district did receive an A+ again which is fantastic they're not just handing those out right now with the current economic situation that everyone is in so that was fantastic news perfect questions for Candice that A+ is attributed to Candice in
her artwork in her department they've done an outstanding job keeping us at an A+ she was even worried that she wasn't going to get there we got there no worries I I was thank you Brian alright Thank You Candice so we'll keep our fingers crossed for Thursday and see what happens look forward to getting the rest of that and I don't know who took the tour last week but I'm scheduled for a tour of the East Side school tomorrow so I'm looking forward to that as well and see where all these funds have been going alright so next up oh I almost missed it on this on the agenda here is our school board schedule for 2020 2021 and we do have an action item for this in your board packet it lists all of
our proposed meeting dates for August through June 28th of 2021 and they're a couple of things worth mentioning there's a board retreat slash work session scheduled for Saturday the 29th at 9 a.m. and typically the board uses that we can discuss our our goals for the next year I'd like to plan on working on not only our goals but our superintendent's goals as well since we'll all be together at the same time and see if we can't get those hammered out and and underway as well as answer any questions or do any other minor training that you might be interested in doing so if there's something that you want to catch up on brush up on something you really want to know we can go over on August 29th as well hopefully by then we'll
also have a better idea of what's going on with our school regarding reopening and having kids back in the classroom as well so our regular school board meetings have been scheduled again for the second Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. and usually if needed we will start at 5:30 if there's an executive session the exception would be for January 12th which is a Tuesday instead of a Monday and that was requested to be changed because there's a major sporting event that many many people like to attend on that on that Monday and rather than having a sparse audience or trying to Scrabble together to get a quorum of board members we looked at placing that on the Tuesday instead of the Monday the special board meetings we reserved times for the fourth Monday of
the month as needed and then we do have the October February and June special board meeting date set aside for data reviews if you're not aware it is board policy that we do those data reviews three times a year so those are good time to get those scheduled and if any other little bits of business pop up we can always add up to the agendas there so questions our discussion on the proposed meeting scheduled for next year okay we'll come back to that in a short while going through our board items board highlights make sure I didn't meet you guys here anything you'd like to share with us since the last time we met I just how do how does its work when we're all talking at the same time it's dusty of this fault
okay I can't even see dusty where is that I only see nine people at a time anyways I just wanted to share my experience at graduation I loved it loved Hootin and Hollerin for those kiddos and supporting them in this very strange kind of environment that we've got going on here I was extremely saddened when kovat hit our communities and one of the things I said to a lot of folks was our seniors our seniors over and over again because graduation is a rite of passage and it's something that I know that I remember fondly and then looking at my own children I just really felt for them and I thought that this was gonna be as successful and so I'm really happy that they got their moment in the light and it wasn't the
same as the graduation some say better some say you know that it but it was something and it was so much effort and beauty that was put in by all those that worked it and gave out diplomas and just the parents seeing them even the picture-taking I love that because he let parents in there I'm get with your kid and I thought me and I want that I wanted that for my kiddos get in there with for the picture so I was very pleased to be a part of that and thank you to everybody I'd like to say kudos on graduation as well having a senior and being a parent and being a board member in that moment was pretty cool and and my senior thought it was pretty cool so that is a well
that's the real test isn't also it was very fun to see the community turn out the way it did I was just it was a moment of shock and awe as to how our community turned out for for those kids so that was special and kudos to all to everyone who showed up for those kids because it was difficult as a parent of us here it was change and change is always hard for kids and I thought that moment with firetrucks and the community lining the streets was special and and sort of my graduates so kudos Oh anybody who were at the grade school to her at the grade school was awesome everyone should go it was super super cool and this is David I want to echo that I want to say I have
not heard Dusty's graduation speech though so I think I got a copy of that so I get your instance terrible terrible it was terrible but I I think to you know you know with all the you know the downside of not having a traditional graduation I was really happy I think there was more community involvement than ever as a result and that was really I think good to see and and I appreciate that James Levine and his wife's efforts to also make a special effort towards a lot of the seniors throughout the community I think that was very well received as as well and the new building is just spectacular I was like wow a modern building wow this is great so I'm really excited for this the staff and the the students they get
to benefit and use that building I also might say I did I did also listen to the scholarship presentation which again you know it's a little bit sad that the students didn't get to have direct recognition but I have to say that was the shortest a scholarship presentation I've ever gone to in my life I think I was watching when I came back my wife like are you done I'm like yeah it was a half-hour there's like so I guess you know there's some benefits to some of that as well so that's all I okay yeah I'd like to second the scholarship presentation we were we were kind of watching that and making a little dinner at the same time we'd stop every time a new person came up and look at their list of
awards that they'd received and then you get busy can kind of pause it for a second same thing with graduation we put it up on the on the television screen and spent most of the afternoon watching the the families drive in and the kids get out and and get their diplomas waited for my turn and and try not to drive too fast get into the high school and you know take my turn to participate in the ceremony which I thought went very very well big kudos to the Marshfield staff and everybody else who helped out with graduation they got a little bit of rain on and off but it turned out to be a pretty nice day and most of the the graduates really seemed to like it I did talk to a couple of
parents who really liked the format and even heard that the high school might keep the parade even if they end up doing graduation in person so something else to look forward to for for next year possibly so let's see before I move on anybody else have anything they'd like to contribute okay so board committees number one is the negotiation committee David yeah so the negotiating committee met with a resource link a charter school I think if you guys know their contract with us is due to expire I think at the end of June and so we entered in a negotiation with them the agreement or the recommendation to the board is to go ahead and approve an extension of that existing contract for a period of two years there were several options available to us
but I think as a whole committee and and resourcing fell to there's so much change and things going on currently really hard to anticipate what's going to be the case and and so it seemed easiest at this point to just go ahead and recommended a contract extension for two years we had considered a year period but there in an accreditation period next year at this time they said they requested not to do the same thing during that time and I think the committee felt that a two-year extension was in order and they were in agreement at that as well I believe they had a board meeting today I didn't hear the outcome from that about whether that was approved on their end or not yes sir I'll be saying yes so that would be our
recommendation to the board so enough there's any questions or if anybody else on the committee would like to speak or add to that okay thank you David let's see next up we've got the scholarship committee I know James is usually the head of that anybody who was on the committee have anything to to mention for that James is a representative of that committee so he's the only board member oh that's right that's right thank you so maybe we'll hear about that at our next meeting and then our last committee is policy committee yes so we went through a number of policies that our last meeting I also played a joke on Brian because that Brian and Kevin had talked in long length about certain policy and then I came back on saying I think it
was I don't know it felt like an hour but it was probably a little more like maybe 20 minutes worth of time I came back on and said could you could you repeat that Brian was so kind he was going to actually start repeating it in a summarized fashion for me so I did say no no I'm just I'm just kidding anyways we had our first readings of our personnel records sexual harassment admission resident student submission of non-resident students special education evaluation eligibility and procedures prevention suicide and that is a new policy we reviewed several policies and we're ready to move forward with g BL g BN / j jb g BN / j ba they are IG bah egg ba / r i feel like a pirate j ec a je CB + j
HH so those are the ones were ready to go forward on and the ARS need further review are the g BL a the kg - AR and the kg k 1 & 2 both wanted to need to have more follow-up so it was a good meeting and you'll see on your agenda some of the the policies for the first readings that we went through and then the second reduce ratings that were ready to move forward on any questions yes I know that kg policies are for facilities use what was the cave kg or kbla the other one that didn't move forward Shh that one was a an additional personnel records or access to personnel records and in talking to OS ba they said that that one was in law but not required by board policy
but the GBL personnel records is required by board policy thank you thanks Shelly no problem I had not written the detail one on that Kim so it's okay I remembered that one but I couldn't remember which one exactly Adrienne you're so good you remember all of them well when you do policies for a while when you have to use the policies quite often you get to remember some of the some of the more choice policies okay are we done with policy yes unless there's any questions or anyone else has anything else dad okay thank you so that moves us on to our action items let me get my cheat sheet over here so I can scribble furiously as we all vote on stuff let's see the first action item is to prove the lighthouse proposal
we didn't actually receive an MoU or proposal from lighthouse they're going to be working on that language and present it to us probably at our meeting later this month so next would be to approve the intra and Inter district transfer numbers I don't think you gave us the intra district numbers correct I thought I had removed it from intra it is just the superintendent's recommended inter-district transfer numbers and I can project his recommendations on the screen if there is a motion okay approve the inter district transfer numbers for 2020 and 2021 school year all right thank you Kim do I hear a second I'll second that if you do bizarre all right thank you Kevin any further discussion on those if you can't read it again that was kindergarten first grade 24 students second and
third grade 25 students fourth and fifth grade 26 students sixth and seventh grade 27 students and four 8th to 12th grade 30 students in the core subject areas so if there are no other questions I'll call for the vote I'm voting aye how about Kim aye [Music] Destin i Kevin all right David all right and brace I okay so that passes unanimously next would be to approve the board meeting scheduled for 2020 2021 this is David I'd like to make a motion to approve the board meeting scheduled for 20 Thank You dusty thank you David it's that satellite delay just end up right on top of everybody any discussion on the meeting schedule okay so for that I'll vote aye how about Kim hey dusty I'm Kevin all right David I embrace all right okay
that passes unanimously as well and then our last would be you got to write this one down I don't have enough spaces on my thing the resource link charter school amendment extending their contract to June 30th 2022 Oh [Music] I'll second that do better okay thank you Kevin further discussion on the resource link contract okay so for that let's see how everybody votes a vote aye Kim aye dusty bye Kevin hi David hi and Bryce hi okay so that passes unanimously as well so well thank you everybody I hope you had a nice time at graduation it seemed to work out really well we do i'm let's see I mean before I sign off here see there's anything else I need to look at don't forget our policy and not our policy committee meeting our
Budget Committee meeting on Wednesday and then also our special board meeting for the budget hearing and data review on the 29th of this month so thank you everybody and I would call this meeting adjourned [Music]
