001the meeting of the corvallis award for may 5th 2022 will come to order the first item on our agenda is the charge of allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under uh indivisible with liberty university in the interest of public health and safety for all community members especially for immuno-compromised individuals and their families the corvallis school board will continue to offer virtual options for board member and district personnel participation additionally public comment is available at some meetings both in person and virtually information about how to provide public comment is available on the corvallis school district website the board's agenda and packet as well as a link to the district youtube channel are available on the school board page on the district website
002public meetings are live streamed on the district's youtube channel and reporting is posted to the same channel typically the day after the meeting i'm grateful that this technology makes it possible for more community members to view and participate in school board meetings given the flexibility provided by oregon law tonight we have directors baker tommeny white bear and myself in attendance in person we have directors jones and adams participating virtually and director al-abderbah is excused due to technology and conductivity limitations some virtual participation well participants may have that camera off at all or some of the time so the first item on the agenda is board member reports does anyone have anything they would like to share look i just wanted to share a second about the thing that's the same okay i just wanted to
003share that i was able to go to the katherine jones harrison elementary school naming ceremony and was absolutely moved with the depth of impact that that premium has had on the students they're um unbelievable and made me so happy to see that and i'm not getting all emotional about it again but um just to see their excitement and um the way they reacted and their own standing ovations and everything was amazing for her and um i just wanted to also recognize um the wonderful job that the school staff um dad beth and whoever else helped planet did in centering the tribe and catherine um that came across in a way that was um really culturally relevant for people who understand the protocols and so i wanted to appreciate that as well and so yeah i
004wanted to highlight those pieces flu shared it was such a moving moving experience to be a part of to be a guest in that space and to see the honoring of the community of catherine and the as well as the tribe and having her family present as well as students and staff another community member who came and were just it was so lovely to hear her stories and her experiences and her roots and corporates and her connections here with corvallis also being one of her homes and i just was incredibly moved by that and really honored to be to be there against that space i had two other just quick announcements i had the pleasure of being part of the osba color practice meeting that was held this last weekend after important school along with
005sammy on this weekend who's a member of the college as well and a number of members came from around the state and had a chance to see the bessie pullman the new school and we're just amazed and odd at the beauty of it as well as the student artwork and some really meaningful conversations particularly around youth voice and engaging youth as well and also the disconnect just to bring that into the space too that we sometimes feel here in our district in terms of you know as adults sometimes our mindsets are on the future or on change and growth over time and for those of you who are students too you're looking for often changing what's going on for us today and tomorrow in school so we talked a little bit about that too in
006looking at how do we better connect and learn from students where they are so i really appreciate that conversation and i'm glad to be part of that conversation with all of you too and i also had a chance to visit the safe group that met this last week and i'm joined for further meetings and didn't know that i'd be stepping into a morning yoga session and i'm ready for it so i want to thank you for welcoming me in that space anyone else have anything they would like to share so i was also honored to be able to attend the um stephen jones harrison ceremony this morning you know it just felt like as as lisa just a really thoughtful way of honoring both katherine and the local tribal communities and the work that has
007been done by the students in that school to learn the truth about history and to appreciate culture and experience this was really wonderful and and just really centering catherine and her family and her community members was yeah i think we all had tears in our eyes at some point um the other thing i have to share is that i attended the legislative policy committee meeting two weekends ago for opa um so the legislature because this capital will be under construction again or under construction this next year will largely be through zoom and remote again so that really changes how we advocate for things that are important to schools so monday i have a meeting with osba to sort of learn the advocacy toolkit but just a heads up to my fellow board members i may
008be calling on you to participate because really having lobbies lobbyists in the building isn't how things are going to be done from now on we really need listed boots on the ground people participating so that will be coming and you know the big themes as far as sort of legislative issues were um staffing issues and um funding so those were pretty universal across you know like all the board members i spoke to so that's unless anyone else has something they want to share we will move on to our rep our student representative i just wanted to add into real quick about the um they don't really talk about it later but since this is in the beginning like the significance of having that many tribal council people at the school and in our community a
009lot of people don't um know that they're actually the governing body of a sovereign nation and i think that's really significant that that kind of relationship was happening um it would be like a president and their cabinet and other folks coming in from another country as a sovereign nation so i thought that was really powerful and i just wanted to make sure at the beginning of the movement no that's i think that's important to acknowledge um so the next item on our agenda is our reports from our student representatives and it is their last reports for this year so um i mean who wants to start maryland do you want to start uh yeah i can go first um just like how i bought a blast meeting um we're having this film festival on may
01026th at seven o'clock at the stages theater and we're just gonna be sharing everyone's stories and like i really encourage you guys to all come and at least stop by and watch our you know films and stuff it's gonna be really nice it's gonna be super touching too i already saw all the videos and it's gonna be so exciting like there's so many stories that are gonna be full and shared it's a very vulnerable moment and um also we're starting our second year of our balanced construction program at our school and they're going to be like building basic like woodworking like welding drafting and like automotive skills and um actually like i think it three of was students at college hill have been hired to work for the school during the summer and um they're
011also gonna be working on like making shelves for the um for people that are navigating homelessness and it's like a very good deal and stuff like that and yeah pretty much can i ask a quick question i went online after you shared about the film festival last time do we need to make a reservation or buy a ticket or can we just come and show up yeah you guys can actually come and show up if anything um we might send emails to you guys as well because we're just we're right now we're like getting like everything planned and then we're gonna do like the inviting and stuff like that we're we're still working on like the population getting rewarded and stuff like that so yeah we're doing some right stuff yeah yeah can i can
012i ask a question yeah uh just what about the film festival what's the um what would you say is the age appropriateness of what we'll be viewing like is this appropriate for a middle schooler uh i honestly i think so yeah okay cool thank you thank you [Music] um just because we have our masks on just to project our voices okay okay uh so like the past couple of weeks students at tv have sort of been mainly focusing on indoors at end of the year and uh the we're playing from if the elections are happening today and tomorrow a lot of students have ap testing or perhaps any other regular tests uh last month at the end of the last month we had a spring swing dance which was the first dance that we've had
013in a while which i think people enjoyed um and students finished all our forecasting seniors have been finishing her after high school so that's what's happened past the moment and then forward um through the rest of may and then into june obviously graduation is coming up so our seniors are you know get their caps and gowns and that's pretty exciting and then also we are like having a change in our council seats so we're having applications are being turned into those um and then we also have a cultural food day coming up which is really exciting on may 18th we got the go on an extended lunch and we're having students and families just bring in food that they want to share with the school i'm excited to bring in some of my um i'm
014going to make food with my grandma this weekend i'm going to bring in some indian food or i'm excited but we'll have food from everywhere um and then also um some of you know we're trying to get a mural for our landing acknowledgement of that cd and we just received the sketches from the artist and it looks really cool and i'm excited to see the final product it's going to be painted over the summer and then we're planning on having some sort of a ceremony once we come back and that's all we have all right um so over at chs we just finished a successful blood drive so huge thanks to all students and staff who donated um we also just finished our pancake feed and so thank you for everyone who bought tickets stopped
015by said hello leadership students really appreciated seeing everyone's faces and it was kind of fun to get back to a in-person activity that we usually do annually so it's kind of when they get back to that and also this week is um staff appreciation week so thank you to all the volunteers who brought in food and helped um support our awesome staff members and thank you for stopping and everything that you've done um this year and all of the changes you made for online last year um also our girls golf team placed second at districts and is now going to state and yeah and julia weldon and anna emily simms were ranked in the top 10 in the league so huge shout out to them congrats guys um as you may have heard we were
016talking about earlier ap testing has begun this week um so good luck to students thank you to the teachers who helped us prepare and yeah study hard get some sleep um and then may 1st it was national college decision day so we had a lot of seniors excited about their future plans whether it be college or trade school or going to the workforce so we're super proud of all of them um and someone started a college decision or student decision instagram account so we've been seeing posts on their super funding builds good school community and spirit and then we also wanted to recognize our mental health specialists at our school for serving our students there's actually a wait list to go see our mental health therapists and everyone has blood reviews for them so huge
017thank you to them and also green our green club which is like our environmental club at chs had a clothing exchange recently um out in our cafeteria and it was super fun to see all the students um there um donating and picking up new clothes it's also mommy's closing again so if you haven't seen it you should get in there because it's really really great and we also had our eighth grade open house and it was super fun to see all of the clubs and sports having their tables open getting recruiting new future freshmen and just seeing the energy that that brought and coming up we have our elections from tuesday may 24th to friday the 27th for our new executive council so we'll get our new asb president and class presidents and your asb
018presidents will be the ones who are going to be here with you next year um we have a driving movie scheduled for sometime in may 20th for just students and their families that should be a pretty fun event and girls tennis districts are next week wednesday thursday friday so highly encourage people to stop by um and then also on may 24th we have the figure bbq and it's kind of similar to what you guys are doing with the international potluck so we'll be having those like in conjunction with each other and also decorating our senior tiles which we put up in our school i don't know if you've been in our school you see like there's a bunch of tiles that just um go around the cafeteria so we'll be decorating new ones and putting
019up some of the old ones that we didn't get to because um and then our student at students advocating for equity club is pushing forward on the mural we're getting t-shirts we've secured i believe nine spawn servers for that so we have t-shirts coming out for our um reveal event on may 30th so i highly encourage everyone to come out and see they see the mural we're buying paint supplies and other things should be a pretty pretty cool project and then we have graduation is scheduled for june 10th at bill coliseum and our senior all night party june 10th starting at 11 pm going to 5 a.m dutch rose is there for free so if you're a senior come that's where it's coming and they're gonna be giving out free drinks so yeah thank you
020i'll be participating in the casino room that night so yeah [Music] google's harvest background on friday and it's going to go on through the entire summer so check it out so it starts this friday yeah okay what days are the stamps uh just it's just right okay um and taylor can you send us information about the reveal yeah so we're we're currently like we're making youth is our like projected date we're not sure if it's gonna be a morning or an afternoon event because we're still trying to see the colors it's going to take us actually painting we're yeah we're projecting like an afternoon like maybe like five six o'clock in the evening um and we're expecting there to be food and for selling the t-shirts and we're just going to be a little get
021together so yeah i'll send out some information when it gets close to the date but that's our other type of plan so far thank you does anyone have any questions for any of our students well i have um i wanted to recognize our student representatives since this is their last meeting um of the year and for those of you who are meeting here early calvin's first meeting in person being his last meeting so it's great to have me in person with all of you and so i have a certificate of appreciation for each of you for um participating along the way sometimes we assume even sometimes from the school via zoom um but you've always been great in the way you participated in the information you shared the questions you've asked and so you know
022we always want to have artistry because it reminds us that we're making decisions for students but to have students in the room as well speaking on their own perspective is really helpful and it helps us to make better decisions for you so thanks for uh thanks for being here and thanks for spending the year with us thank you thank you for having us would be okay to do a photo op with the board members of those student reps i wanted to add that you know go ahead um but do one of our things we talk about a lot of student voice student foreign really is something we believe in and um appreciate and i always you know i feel like students ask questions sometimes during boardroom meetings that we wouldn't think of because we're not
023seeing it from your perspective so it's a really valuable thing to have you actually participating and it's also been just kind of uplifting over this year to watch this sort of wave of activities increase and realize that like things are starting to feel normal again and so hearing that from our student system especially the last three meetings how busy everything is feels like okay we're gonna get there so thank you for your participation don't like that yeah all the things like cramming for ap tests and uh dinner for graduation and getting the farm ready for us to come on fridays it feels the film festival it feels it feels really good to yeah i just wanted to also appreciate all your girls time because i know you have to spend study time another block of
024time in your evening and um we all often stay past eight and even though you don't have to i remember that one meeting kelvin when you stayed all the way till the end [Laughter] maybe you didn't say that but i appreciate y'all hanging in there especially over zoom like that didn't waver your commitment or the kind of comments and questions and how you represented your peers and stuff so thank you for um spending that time with us i'd like to say thanks to all of you and i know sammy's not here but like i also want to extend like a virtual thing for him because all of you guys have been really welcoming over the past two years and in a way tonight is almost like a closing of a chapter of my life just
025because i feel like i've defined myself so much by the school representative over the past couple years so it's something but it's good to have been a part of it for us yeah well we hope it's the beginning of you also continuing to share your voice in other spaces because you have taught us so much and we carry your words and your voices with us and i'm excited for what's what comes next for you and for who comes next in your seats too because this is so important is my colleagues have sure too we need your voices here and so we hope that you'll learn too really appreciate um seeing the response and like the actions you guys take in response to what our reports are so like we really appreciate you guys stopping by
026to the safe meetings like that meant a lot just being able to like see you guys and being able to interact with you guys i think that meant a lot for students so yeah thank you for everything that you've done like in response to our report so it sounds like we're actually being hurt i really appreciate it yeah sometimes yeah yeah sometimes you feel like you're just saying things and no one's hearing but yeah i feel like my first time ever like being in a school district where like like are like students voices are heard like yeah i was like in a school where like you know like opinions or what they wanted for the school or nothing and it's just like it's just like it blew my mind to see like coming here and
027seeing like you guys took action to like anything anyone would do like even the parents they would come and they would tell you guys something they had and they were too passionate to them so it was just not like only the students you know you guys hear the parents and the it was just like really nice you know seeing this environment and getting this environment for this experience for me as well i think there are so many times where the bureaucracy of it all has been frustrating where this takes a while for anything to get done but it's nice in the sense that not only will prepare us for any bureaucracy that we might have in the future with it but it helps us appreciate the smaller things along the way not only just didn't
028get done thanks i just wanted to first um like others just extend gratitude for your participation uh it occurs to me that we have done something that um is really unprecedented um we have governed a school district and collaborated through a global pandemic and you guys have been part of that as a student representatives and there um you know prior to 2020 there were no student representatives who could make that claim and now we've had you know two two rounds of having students um have experiences of adapting and uh pivoting on a dime and so um you guys have done that with grace and with amazing commitment um just in general having students be part of the board i don't know if there's a better um demonstration a representation of the accountability that the school
029board has than to sit in the room with the individuals who attend the schools who use the curriculum and apply the policies and go through the carry out the strategic vision that we have um you're right here and it's this constant reminder that we need to take the seriously we need to do a good job um and your encouragement when we are um successful in that is very meaningful um and your voice to help provide direction for that um i don't know if you maybe realize the times that um some of the most relevant or poignant things that have been shared have come from one of you and so um you know i just really i always feel like i learn so much because i am a few years away from my time um having
030been in high school um and so it's just a very special experience to um to have this collaborative process and to um to really you know just you know to do this alongside alongside you guys i have a child who's about to go into sixth grade and you give me hope um for what it will be like to have a high schooler in my life i'm quite certain that you guys have different interactions with your parents but nonetheless when you are out in this space you represent very well and so it gives me great hope that my child will impress other people um and will demonstrate uh courage and be be bold and represent his beliefs and do those things with conviction uh because i'm seeing the kids in our district do that and i
031and i'm seeing them come to our board room every um at our meeting so thank you you will be missed and um please keep in touch and make sure that we know what you guys are up to um when you are not in the boardroom with us anymore okay anyone else okay we're gonna do a quick picture um okay thank you thank you okay um the next item on our agenda is our superintendent's report all right so i have a couple of things i wanted to highlight tonight um and then do you have the powerpoint kim all right so uh oh you can go to the next slide this is the last slide was on wednesday mornings until um that was done we were another processing students in the morning so that's uh that is
032an awesome way to start the day though um so here's a couple of pictures from today from the event at katherine jones harrison elementary and again um i think you all did a fantastic job of describing what the day was about and what it was like um for me um one of the things i wanted to highlight was that i shared a little bit about the renaming process and the criteria that was set by vince in that resolution and to be able to say these these were the areas that we were looking to and you are have done incredible work in each one of these areas felt really good it felt great to be um in community um where catherine's family was there members of the brand ron tribe were there um one of the
033things that was shared with me is that some of the family members hadn't been together for many many years and were coming from all over the state and so again it was a a great event um it really highlights why the renaming process is so powerful um the students were so engaged um there were students there when she came in that she was able to be introduced to and they were saying i met the captain jones harrison and and shaking a little bit they were so excited and so to have an event like that um from the drum circle to students having a little bit of smoke salmon at the end of the event um all of those pieces really um just made it a a really special day to be together um and it's
034a day i'll never forget um and all the things i get to do as a superintendent this is a day that i'll always remember um and that's that's really special so um again the quilt that was made for katherine um again a picture of both beth and i having the opportunity to to talk with katherine she and i had gone and visited catherine at the grand run before and so it was a nice chance for us to um become reappointed and then sarah and lou in the third picture as well as our board leadership um again it was a it was just a beautiful and terrific day so um i know my description isn't doing justice to what it really feels like and there's some times that you can and there's some times that you
035truly can't you can talk about it but to experience it is a whole different thing so there were lots there were lots of tears and tissues without a doubt so i also wanted to recognize oh here's some additional pictures great so um one with catherine and members of her family the one in the middle is the um the blanket that was presented to beth as the principal and then a picture of catherine with students they were coming out as they got as they finished their salmon to take pictures with her so again it was uh just a really tremendous um awesome day she has to be exhausted she was like talking to every child every adult giving everyone so much time like that was the most powerful um [Music] tomorrow um will be another opportunity
036thanks to the foundation for us to provide meals to staff members it's a late start at our high schools and again that's that's a chance for us to let taylor sleep in a little bit and but also to provide and provide meals for staff to come together as we continue to do what we can to keep taking care of our staff this week's teacher appreciation and so again if you have a chance to thank a teacher tomorrow please do that um i shared on on twitter the other day the signage out in front of adam's appreciating the staff um just any way that we're able to do that right now makes a huge difference for folks so again we have incredible staff across our district incredible teachers and folks that really care about our students
037and so it's nice to be able to recognize them we just finished up our lincoln and garfield tours those happened last week and we had a chance to show off our new spaces and invite community members in again there were a lot of neighbors that came to to the visits to see the schools and just a lot to be proud of i have a couple of students that i wanted to include in my promise of oregon update so we have a few more students that have been recognized by the oregon school boards association natalie green is one of those students by the promise of war again that's okay because i want to be a teacher like my mom and work with kids [Music] there's gas [Music] of animals and plants that are almost extinct or
038injured because so again we'll continue to have promise of oregon kids recognized by osba over the next month as we as we finish out our school year um one of the other things i really wanted to highlight um in my superintendent's report is that we tonight the board's going to take action on the last contract related to the college hill and that at that point we will have all of our projects under contract within the budget and all of the bond promises included so if you think about where we've been related to um wildfires and coven and supply chain and enough folks working in industry and trades to be at this point is phenomenal and so ken and her team just really deserve appreciation for working so hard to make that happen through everything that's
039gone going on so kim i know you weren't expecting this but if you could stand up i want to give you a round of applause so again phenomenal work and not easy um along the way so something to be really proud of as a community that we've been able to do that with the funds that we had and i'm gonna leave it at that look at that anyone have any questions for ryan look um is the school meeting ceremony is that recorded or not it was not recorded it was streamed but not recorded and the gt posted like a minute and a half okay so just underneath more yeah there's places that people can view more pictures and stuff like that john was there as our videographer okay and so he will be putting likes
040putting um a piece together for us so we will have that awesome yeah we're trying to balance um having so many students in the space and recordings and so that's what we what we landed on yeah anyone else no so with that we will move on to the next item agenda which is public comment typically we have one remember the public is here um so just for everyone's information the complete guidelines for public comment are available uh we're available on the table outside of the meeting room and on the board's website so i'm going to share just a few important points right now when it's your turn you're the only one to speak please come forward and have a seat state your name and direct your comments to the board as a reminder you want
041three minutes to make your comments when i will alert you when you have 30 seconds left or is the light working or not so when you have 30 seconds left the yellow light will turn on and when your time is up the red light will turn on following your comments the board will have three minutes to ask clarifying questions before you start your comment please state your name for the record and state whether you reside within the school district boundary i have three issues that i would like to discuss first you may have heard the story of kyron horman he was last seen in school at age 45 am on june 4th 2010. he wasn't reported missing until the afternoon after his parents discovered he wasn't on the school bus they went to the school
042to find him prompting the school secretary to call 9-1-1 at 3 46 pm kyron had disappeared no evidence of the boy had been discovered has been discovered to date corvallis school district policy is to notify parents with an absence after school taking immediate action is the surest way to find someone if they've gone missing we don't want another chiron hormone in our state and corvallis school district needs to amend this policy to notify parents sooner if their child isn't in school and the parents haven't called the attendance line i strongly urge the district to change his policy second i would like the school district to reconsider its policy mandating where subjects are taught by age and grade rather than ability in middle school the current model is inequitable students have differing abilities at various ages
043but are forced into classes that may not be challenging children who request more challenging work are told to self-study that all students are entitled to the assistance of a teacher regardless of their level of knowledge i understand tag issues will be addressed at this meeting however the current matter of assigning core classes ignores students at a higher level who haven't been tag identified arranging instruction based on age and grade may be easier for administrators but it does not serve the interests of students and the current instruction provided for students does not address accelerated rates of learning if classes were assigned by ability it would allow students who are able to take more challenging courses every child is entitled to the assistance of a teacher regardless of ability and should not be required to self-study because
044they want to learn faster we should encourage our students who want to learn more rather than forcing them to slow down leading to boarding and advocating finally i would like the district to reconsider its current locker policy the justifications for not using lockers since proven has become less concerning do not outweigh the needs of children it is hard on growing young bodies to carry around heavy bags musical instruments and sports equipment heavy bags can increase health risks for students by placing excessive strain on growing bones and muscles this is exacerbated when students have to carry other things like instruments or sports equipment just setting aside a place for lunch doesn't address this issue thank you thank you anyone have any questions no thank you very much thank you okay the next item on our agenda
045is the contract for the college hill party bond project why i already stole kim's thunder [Music] any [Music] for this meeting that you can go to to see what has been brought to the board vince do you have a question i do have a clarifying question before we uh take up this matter uh there's a use of an acronym in the in the cover sheet it's aia and i don't know what the accurate acronym means can someone decode that for me that means american institute of architects it's a trade group that helps helps put together contract documents thank you dale um that was not what i inferred out of that and so thank you for that um madam chair would you entertain a motion well does anyone else have questions i have one question so
046and ryan sort of covered this a little bit but i just want to be assured that with this final contract that we are we're okay in case we've seen a lot of unforeseen emergencies over the last couple years and sorry you know um i think last meeting we asked about a plan b and so i'm just are we in good shape that we either won't need a plan b or that we have a plan b well this puts all of our bond promises under contract and um it leaves us one roughly 1.8 million joe can probably give us the exact number in bond reserves for any um unforeseen that come up and remember that in our contract and budget um allocations we have both contractor and owner contingencies planned for so there is money set
047aside in anticipation of unknowns and then the 1.8 million dollars would be there for anything above and beyond that great thank you um so now i will entertain a motion defense i move to authorize staff to execute an aia document a101-20 or 2017 a standard form agreement between owner and contractors where basis of payment is a stipulated sum with todd construction for the college hill harding center renovation project in the amount of 11 million 249 thousand dollars utilizing one million one hundred and eleven thousand two hundred eighty seven dollars from the designated facilities fund and authorize a bond reserve allocation for the college hill harding center renovation project in the amount of three million five hundred and seventeen thousand seventy two dollars it has been moved by events and seconded by lou let me approve
048to execute a i a document a101 um is there any final discussion i just want to once again restate my immense appreciation for the bond leadership team um and uh for our superintendent and for our director of facilities i think back to when i you know first was on the board and actually you know a couple years in we started this journey a long long time ago uh when we uh started a process where we we didn't start talking about buildings we started talking about what education should look like in corvallis going forward and it's just it's just been um really satisfying and miraculous process of watching these buildings go up seeing our buildings transformed seeing the reactions of our community seeing our community being buoyed through a a crisis by the positive influence of
049this construction project and then to finish with being able to meet all our obligations you know with just a tiny bit of contingency left over is just just really amazing so thank you uh for all the folks the many hundreds probably thousands of people who have contributed to this project thank you for the hard hard work to make this all happen i want to second vince's appreciation um when there's all this excitement when we passed the bond measure and then got started on these projects and then when the pandemic hits and i lay awake at night with oh my look what how we do you how do we do how do we do and once i got past the list of things like how do we feed children you know i hit how do we
050keep all this work that we promised going and [Music] we've had this amazing team that has kept it going and to be approving the final contracts tonight and to be you know hosting meetings and beautiful new buildings i think is just a really just important accomplishment for our district and for the team that's been working on it so i really appreciate your work and i think if there was ever an example of responsible stewardship of the community's resources this bond project is it so if you have questions about our district's ability to responsibly manage large projects and large amounts of money um i think look to our bond work and you will see that we have a team that it works very hard for our district and for our community and is very capable so
051thank you anyone else anything just back thanks um i echo all of the appreciation i wanted to share that uh when uh when we found ourselves home in march of 2020 and wondering how we were going to suddenly school our children from home and what was going to happen with our buildings and this work and how are we going to proceed um you know there was a it was obviously very not the way we envisioned doing this i live across pretty much across the street from garfield elementary and by the time they started to work on garfield you know we knew we weren't going back for the rest of that school year and we probably at that point had a pretty good indication we wouldn't be doing at least some portion of the next year
052in person as well and so we were uh you know the teachers were giving um assignments like go out and do a scavenger hunt and you know get out so we were out walking in our neighborhood pretty much every day and we watched the first part of the project happened at garfield and so my son said i'm gonna get the camera and so he ran and got the camera and he started taking pictures and for every single day of the rest of his third grade year we walked the block around garfield every day and took pictures hundreds of pictures like he doesn't he doesn't take his finger off the button click like you know 80 90 pictures at a time and um it was a little overwhelming but uh when the school year ended what
053was really interesting was we had been able to watch in all of these photos that he had taken the progress that was taking place at garfield and there was something just really comforting about watching i mean i knew the project was happening because it was there but watching it you know reflecting and going oh this is what 90 days of work on this project looks like there was just something really reassuring about we were going to come through this and we were going to have a building and our kids would go back into it eventually and we didn't know exactly when but um i just wanted to share that in an odd way uh the initial groundbreaking of these projects was i it was kind of therapeutic for this feeling that we are not actually
054stalled things are really different they look not the way we planned but trees are coming down and asphalt's getting ripped up and you know there are walls where there weren't and there are no walls where they used to be and there was and things were changing and so i just appreciate that um in a situation that was so imperfect in so many ways there was this really wonderful opportunity to watch our district moving forward continuing to follow through on its commitment continuing to find a way to teach our kids and an unusual creative sometimes making it up as we go kind of way and in all of that i've got like 1100 pictures of the early construction field if anybody ever wants to come look at them um but uh it's kind of neat to
055just pull them up on the camera and then just arrow through them and you can just kind of watch the building change as it goes so it's not really a i don't think it's anything i think i just wanted to say we're coming to the end of this and in so many ways it started in such a strange time and it feels a little bit weird to realize that we are coming to the to the end of it but um i sort of feel attached to this new building at garfield and i don't think i'm ever going to not have a sentimental attachment to um watching this happen during what has been quite possibly one of the hardest experiences that i have navigated in in my adult life so um a lot of thanks to
056the crew that kept showing up and working every day and the district staff that kept keeping this project going forward and to my son for doc documenting uh maybe excessively um images that we will you know we'll get to keep those with us later when we have some time and some distance from this uh moment but um it's kind of special so i i feel really privileged to have literally had a front row seat to the work that our district is doing and uh it's a little bit emotional so anyway that's it okay so oh i'm gonna use the protocol i'm sorry um it's so true i think about all the kids and families and community has been impacted by watching these buildings and it's just really exciting to be where we're at with everything
057and appreciate um y'all's work bill and kim and everybody else and like getting us getting all the projects that i needed to get done and like how it was already expressed and in the budget too like that's great and that was like no that wasn't the easiest thing to do because of all the things that were happening during the pandemic but that front row seat thing when teresa was talking about there's so many people that probably share that i know i do and so my kids who fondly watched it and sadly watched the old one get torched in chunks but um and even just driving around town like talking about all the projects to whoever's in the car with me they're probably starting to talk about it yes that's all i just wanted to okay
058so we'll now take a vote director baker here you go hi dr comedy hi director whitebear hi director adams hi dr jones hi and i vote i the motion passes unanimously we have our last contract thank you all for your support so the next item on our agenda is the oregon school board association work session with kristen miles um so i will turn the meeting over to kristen hi everybody thanks for having me back good to see you it's been a little while um since we last met as you'll remember um we got well we came up with a lot of questions that you wanted to go out into the community and ask and we put out a survey we gathered all the data and so tonight what i'm going to do is um is
059show you what what the data the data that came back and what we're going to do is there was a lot that came back we're going to hit some high level themes and you're going to see a number of ways that we put it together so i'm going to go ahead i hope i have the ability to share my screen oh good share my screen give me a minute to get it into presenter mode there we go is it there okay now can you see the right thing i hope you can see the right thing okay great all right so first thing i want to point out is that we had 14 questions going to the community and we had 341 participants in both english and spanish there were three participants in spanish and not
060all three answered all the questions um so just wanted to let you know that that did go out there we had a couple responses and and like i said what i'm gonna present to you tonight are the themes that were present in each question so as as you know because i think this is what i told you i was gonna do i went through each of these uh questions coded for themes did all that qualitative review and so that's what you're going to see tonight i'm going to show you each question i'm going to show you the themes that came up and then in the end i'm going to show you a crosswalk so you can see the themes and the questions that went along with them so you can see what um how prevalent
061each theme was at the end of what i show you and of course i will turn this into a pdf and give this to you afterward maybe take some notes if you can but um at the end of this presentation what we're going to do is talk about what do you want to do with this so your next step is i believe you wanted to go out and do some community listening sessions so what do you want to do with this data this was meant to provide you some information to start with so then the the conversation will be yours now i know we don't have a ton of time for this i think ryan is this a 90 minute thing all together okay so i'm going to keep you with the if i'm with
062the board evaluation piece yes and then we're going to talk about um the next piece that you're going to do it which is uh board self-evaluation you may or may not know about that yet but but we're gonna we're gonna talk about that at the end so we're gonna keep our conversations streamlined i'm not gonna whip through this but i am gonna keep moving at a little bit of a clip and anything that you wanna see again you can see so these were the first two questions and i'm just gonna go through and again talk a little bit about these themes but you're gonna see what what came up so we first asked what's the most important way the board can engage you and the groups of which you are apart the biggest answer here
063was communication and a lot of folks answered including surveys like this so i will say that the theme was please send us more surveys so whether or not that surprises you that did come up quite a bit um other folks wanted community forums q and a sessions and a variety of modalities of of communication another piece was accessible meeting materials i can say that um you know sending out agendas and sending out links to um to minutes was were two of the things that were requested the next question was how do you feel the board can better communicate its role and function to the community so and i'm putting these in order by the way what's most prevalent down to what was least prevalent so the first piece was communication but i will say that
064there were a number of asks of please teach us what you do we want to know this so there were a number of requests for you know put a put some like little two-minute videos on the website go out into the social media space like we we want to know what it is that you do so there was a real hunger for like we want to know what the role of the board is so i think there's a great opportunity there for some community education and then accessibility being accessible to the community and transparent communication the next question with respect to the current board goals you asked are there areas that you feel are missing and could be added a theme of academic rigor and excellence um advanced options for kids came up the um
065an issue of equity came up or the theme of equity real world education was a prevalent hands-on real world application came up um health and safety and social emotional learning i did break those two out but health and safety um was was distinct from social emotional learning so those things came up and then what should staff in corvallis experience with respect to their working environments and supports there were a number of mentions of structural and systemic support so there not a lot of detail there all the time so that one was a little bit hard to break down but looking at the system itself um being supportive of teachers safety came up quite a bit having teachers have opportunities for input in decision making and then just the goal of respect and trust for staff
066we asked a number of questions about what should students in in corvallis experience with respect to and then there were a number of bullet points beneath that so the first one was what should students in corvallis experience with respect to what and how they learn and the theme of academic rigor came up that academic rigor and excellence the real world applicable practical learning piece came up again an issue of equity came up again and an issue of safety came up again so these themes are are becoming a little prevalent and then the next what should students experience question was um with respect to social emotional well-being and belonging health and safety was and that and belonging was mentioned in there i left that word in the question health and safety um was came up quite
067a bit equity and belonging again um and academic rigor came third those are the three big um themes in that question so then the next what should student experience um question was with respect to extracurricular opportunities so um a variety this was a big one a variety of extracurricular opportunities was a theme accessibility and reduced barriers so i i broke these two out i could have put them together but accessibility was really about scheduling and and also accessibility for students of all abilities what i saw mostly in reduced barriers was about cost and um and and those kinds of barriers um and language was also another theme that came up so i wanted to pull those out individually the next question what should student experience with respect to having their individual needs met so the
068first piece there the first theme there was differentiation differentiation of instruction academic rigor came up again a focus on social emotional learning was a theme there and then health and safety came up so then we asked who do the board's goals represent who do they not represent i will tell you that um the vast well actually every answer i got was who do they represent if somebody said who did they not represent they also they also had who do they represent so what you're seeing here is who do the board's goals represent um there was um a theme of politics that came up um here then there was a theme of these these goals represent all students and the whole community and then there was a theme that the board's goals represent the board we
069asked what is working to serve our students and schools are their areas of strength big focus was staff being an excellent of an area of strength equity came up as a theme facilities was a very uh popular theme in this section a focus on social emotional learning then there were extras besides core classes um not besides choral classes and dual language but like including dual language these extra pieces so not meaning extracurriculars but the other kinds of pieces that could be during the day so other kinds of options for kids during the day and then a focus on building community we asked then what is not working to serve our students in schools are there areas for growth academic rigor came up in this section again a theme of politics um the focus of the
070board there was a question here about we don't know necessarily what the board's focus is um a greater focus on health and safety was desired and then communication came up more communication i think that went sort of along with you know please send us more surveys let us know what you do that kind of thing we asked where does corvallis need to be in five years so a theme here again academic rigor wanting more of that um equity as a theme um reduced politics as a theme there was a theme of let's meet existing goals so folks looking at the goals that you had set and really wanting the board to meet those goals within the next five years and then a focus on social emotional learning and making progress with that then we asked
071where does corvallis need to be in 10 years i will say that that far fewer people answered this question but the themes tended to be the same so academic rigor advanced equity and more real world learning so applicability to the world outside of school and then finally we asked is there anything else you would like the board and district leadership to know and most of what we saw here was um a return focus on many of the answers were this is what i said earlier i really want to highlight what i what i said in some of these questions so the biggest theme here was about academic rigor advanced classes um but the second theme was there was a lot of appreciation for this kind of outreach for this survey specifically for the work of
072the district and the work of the board and staff um so again there was there was sort of a theme of thank you for sending this survey please send us more um again there was a focus on on politics folks uh reiterated their feelings about that um they thanked staff again sort of separately from just outreach and um and highlighted the need for just keep um keep communicating keep being transparent and accessible so this this i'm gonna just leave this up here for a minute so what i wanted to so i don't know about you but like going through all of that was great but i want to see if it's me i want to see like how the questions crosswalk with the main themes so this is what i did i did uh you
073know a little bit of a crosswalk okay here are the main themes here are all the questions you can see what the prevalence of each of the themes was looking across what the questions were so i'm gonna and of course like i said you're gonna get all this but i'm just gonna like sit here for a minute while you look at this and just um i know it's small i like really had to scrunch this into that slide but um if you need to um i have all of the questions if you're looking at the questions and you're like kristen which was this one i can read them to you so just take a minute um and let me know if you need anything if you're ready to move on etcetera oh calvin you got
074your hand raised um i don't know if it's necessarily a question for you or for like someone else here but is there a way to potentially send the same survey to high school and you middle school students not only get the parent side of the thing things on what's working what's not working on those board goals but student side on what they feel is working in the portfolio i don't think there's anything that would um prevent us from being able to do that we'd have to figure out sort of the timing of some of those pieces for sure um so that would be the piece we need to we need to look into but that's a that's a great idea yeah i have a methodological question who how did we select the respondents for these
075folks are for the how did we get our respondents i don't know how you sent that out we said we sent it to all families yes so god sent okay got emailed to everyone yeah okay and did we did we uh collect any any demographic information about who was responding uh so that we could see if certain groups i i'm just curious how generalizable to the whole community is this survey is really the question in the back of my head i think that kristen can answer that in terms of what she what she looked at um and kelly could answer that for us too but what i also want you to think about is that by by doing this theme we wanted we want to be able to use this to for some listening sessions
076and community engagement and so i don't want us to get too stuck in um that aspect as much as to know that these are themes that came up and we we need to go out and learn more about it um so so i think that's i i i see where you're going and i want to um also kind of remind you of where we're headed with it okay sounds good so kristen do you have um that demographic information we didn't collect no we didn't collect a ton of demographic information um oops did i just did i just do something weird no i would just say for example i mean christian confirmed that i heard you correctly we had three uh spanish 41. oh yeah three spanish so i don't think that that's necessarily representative of
077our linguistically isolated population so i i mean that's we got some but that's not all of them so yeah that tells me that we're not reaching everyone and and i think again that's why we want to let's talk about next steps and how to go out and reach everyone understand based on the things that we're hearing about it oh it looks like kelly offered to speak to this too i think that'd be great [Music] hi everyone can you hear me okay hi good evening i'm sorry i'm i'm at home and my kids just came in to say good night so i had to give quick loves and say gotta get on my phone um so we sent this out through parent square to our staff we sent it out to families uh we sent out
078a press release and i believe the gazette times shared this information we had it on the website and then we also did what we did the last time we had a survey where we had paper copies available in all of our buildings in our front offices so those were available there as well so so really anyone that would get it through those those means of sharing would be who participated in this survey so i think it's um you know a good point to point out the folks that will participate in a survey in that way versus folks who might benefit from some different kinds of engagement terese thanks so i guess to kind of to vince's point and i i think in a way that i would sort of ask us to i don't know
079go a little further in his in that line of questioning is so we don't really know we don't know we didn't get any information we have no demographic information about the respondents no and that's okay but i also think that means we have to recognize the limitations of what we can say about what we can do with this because when we talk about as as ryan put it using this to go forward if we're going forward and building on these ideas and these ideas are not representative and we don't know exactly who they're representative of we just need to make sure that we're accounting for that because we i i'm not saying that we that doesn't mean that it necessarily weakens it's just that the idea of not we're not going to look back and
080think about who gave us this information but this information is intended to serve as a platform for listening sessions if i'm a person in the community and i didn't participate in the survey and then the topics that emerge from the survey become the foundation of listening sessions and those are not the topics that i would like to talk about i may be less inclined to participate in a listening session because the listening session does not reflect me and so we just need to consider the possibility that whatever participation bias was present in the select in the who chose to respond will carry over on some level and be be important to consider and who wants to continue to engage with these topics that were identified by a group of people and we don't know how
081representative that group is that's it well i just had a question about um the response rate if it's similar to other surveys that are sent out like the response rate itself um [Music] so survey specific but um i feel like um we had a higher response rate when it was around the priorities of the level we ended up with closer to 600 folks there and there was over 300 here so but we've also sometimes do surveys so i would say it's probably in the middle of what we get what we tend to receive that's helpful because like if it's like low high you know i'd say it's probably fairly average participation great thanks yeah thank you taylor um i just wanted to offer a suggestion if you were to send this out to students which
082i think that would be a great opportunity to get student voice um a starting point could be contacting leadership classes and sending reaching out to di teachers if you're trying to get a different perspective um yeah so affinity groups like save di we have a metric group at chs and i'm sure that that would help with and those students would like to be able to offer some suggestions that way or if you wanted to do it on an even bigger scale you could go to we have our advisor classes where we meet together the entire school and we do assemblies or we do things just in our classrooms like we've been doing our equity lessons um if you wanted to offer a survey during that time i think that you get pretty good student um
083participation in that there's some suggestions if you wanted to reach out to students that would i think that'd be a good time if you have one or two one more advisory schedule this year i'm not sure how many but okay um i think that would be a good a good place to get students participation calvin yeah on that like i'm also not entirely sure that majority of the student body even knows the board goals so if we are going to do the survey we need to make sure that we might include like what the goals of the board are in that survey somehow because maybe the students know what the you know and those were included in the survey they were listed in the in the beginning so that folks could review those and then
084answer questions about them that's a great point though thank you shauna i was just going to add to kelvin's comments around making sure this surveyed before when i'm students which i love that idea i'm really glad to mention that this student tries to just even know the way that we've presented that it feels meaningful to your experience there great to get to do the eyes on the survey before without the students to make sure it felt like it was written in a way that was meaningful so even though i was poking holes in methodological holes in the in the survey uh this data does tell a story i mean we we definitely are seeing uh themes popping out here i mean just looking at the frequencies there are four themes here you know communication academic
085rigor um of course equity and reduced barriers and then health safety and social emotional learning are really popping out in this so i think you know there's useful information coming out of this that are actionable information um but i think that going forward you just need to be mindful of the robustness of of you know the survey itself anything else on this piece because the next thing i'm going to ask you to do is talk about so now how do you want to to use this or think about this at least as you go forward and start thinking about your community listening sessions so anything else here did you get enough time to look at this is there anything okay so that's my question to you and what i'm gonna do is um take some
086notes as you talk um because i'm not i'm not sure what the timing is on your and maybe ryan can speak to this a little bit or maybe this is something that has not yet been worked out but what your plan is for community listening sessions community engagement what what you intend to do next and how you would want to use this going forward but as i usually do i want to take some notes on your thoughts and then give those back to you so that that can help you develop a plan so i'm going to stop sharing this and get my notes during our conversations the last time with we were with kristen um we did talk about um having the opportunity for some community some type of community engagement and making sure that
087we are meeting with specific groups of folks um so we're gaining lots of perspective um and so as i've listened that's to me what i've kind of anticipated would be our next step at the same time i want to make sure it's also a step that's relevant for you all as you refine these goals or make changes to them so that's where i think the conversation needs to go if it were to have limited conversation that's what i would envision as the next step loud um okay so i'm just gonna jump down and say i think that's a good approach and i'd love to see us specifically have multiple listening sessions if possible like a minimum of three like perhaps partnering with a community group like casa to have a bilingual one um and also
088um with the naacp education committee to see if we can have another follow-up session with them um to build upon that previous one from all the way from like last year and um also a couple general ones perhaps or if there's a way to pull in some arabic speaking families too i think that those would be helpful and also um being able to take the themes um thanks for putting those out vince i was staring at those two like you can distinctly see the ones that were showing up over and over again and perhaps using those themes to say like if you were thinking about the future of the district how would these four pieces how do you want them to show up in the workforce um to help narrow down the focus a little
089bit and then still leave that open-ended is anything missing piece yeah so that's i would love to see some development around that vince i'm i'm going to say ditto what lou just said i think the the next piece i mean yes i like the plan as you presented it i really like the idea of targeted listening sessions so i'll use this we got this information but okay now let's go ground truth it and see what people actually say to our to us to our face and see if those things line up and see with where there are differences across constituencies you know in in these themes um i have already a bunch of questions within these themes that i've jotted down particularly around rigor i mean you know rigor you know clearly was coming up
090but i'm curious what parents mean by academic rigor what are the dimensions of that and then how are we supposed to measure academic rigor because i thought we were kind of measuring that and so it's meant it sounds like there's maybe a disconnect between the board and the district in the community and i just would like to know a little bit more about that um you know the other is politics politics is a theme that is coming up all over the country it is a hot topic it is not going to go away so i don't know exactly what people mean by politics because in the school board meetings that i attend here we don't talk about our political affiliation or anything i don't know exactly what they mean by that so i need to
091have a conversation with folks or hear people talk about that so there are questions within these themes so using these themes as a jumping off point to generate uh prompt questions for a focus group or discussion groups shauna i was also thinking about you know in addition to the whole thing i know that capacity is also something that needs to be considered but thinking about the capacity of the families the students and others that we're looking to engage with if there's many ways to embed some of these relationships or moments into groups that already dismissed that are already gathered so here we are to see it we're thinking about safe student group and going and spending one or more visits having a conversation about that together with students so thinking about where there are families
092where our students gather in all of them and other natural points where we could be invited into those spaces rather than in addition to maybe having some also come to the spaces that we set up yeah thank you charlotte yeah so i don't know much about these community listing sessions but um and i don't know how targeted or exclusive they may be but trying to also get like student participation within them because you know i've heard about it like when i'm on the website like i've heard of them happening but as a student i don't receive much information so like once they do get planned sharing the information with with even just us and then we can um make sure it gets out to our school so you get the student voice that you're um
093that you wish to have and and i mean i would love to say [Music] there's a lot of opinions that marrying opinions sarah yeah i think um you know what everyone else has said i think a lot of these themes are very intertwined because things like communication and what you mean by communication and what if you're already measuring that or what do you mean by politics or equity and it was the issue that we're not doing it or is the issue that you don't know that we're doing it or is the issue you don't like what we're doing um so i think there's a lot of digging into that and i really look forward to you have it it's having these listening sessions to expand the voice that we're hearing because there's certain self selection
094when you're answering surveys um and then you know i feel like those that sort of next level that information will give us some really rich kind of meaty stuff to to chew on at our retreat this summer as we really are digging into that to this information to look at our goals and and develop you know the next set of goals for the district so thank you vince yeah it's just a pop thought popped up to me in my head and i haven't heard anybody talk about this but historically this board has delegated uh most of our community outreach to to the superintendent into the district and i think this is a situation where the board needs to be you know more involved um that and i'm you know i think we need to discuss
095what that looks like whether that is you know the whole board showing up in a giant hearing we could do that or are we going to have board members acting as liaisons in uh district led processes so i think that but i think it's important for both the board board members and more importantly for the community for the board to be in these sessions as people are sharing their thoughts and feelings about the district and the education of their children rather than what we've done in the past where we have staff going out into the community collecting information and then digesting that and then bringing it to the board so yeah this is about board engagement of the community not just the district no i totally thought we were just gonna do that so thanks
096for speaking it out loud to those like i don't know why i thought that was the plan for the listening sessions but maybe because we really want to be engaged and as much as possible and hearing from the community around all of us and um i do want to make sure that we recognize some of the dynamics that does create though in those spaces and um and our our role in the space so it doesn't come across as like shaping what we want to hear and so when we get to that point we're just going to be like super good about that and um and communicating that to the community um i do want to point out in response to some of what shauna was saying about the um the targeted kind of like what's
097already existing i think that's kind of what i had in mind when i was mentioning the specific groups because they already have meetings or they have gathering like kind of things figured out and if it fits in within the scope of what's already happening i think that was a really important qualification so i just want to thank you for that taylor um so i know that we were like vince brought up he was talking about what exactly people might have been meaning by academic burger and i just i know just like from competitions that i've been having with other students and different families is there's been some people who have been expressing concern about the heterogeneous like math groups and like having like everyone in the same math class and i know that some people
098were opposed to that because they were worried about um students who are demonstrating high proficiency in math being like um and also those who are demonstrating low proficiency in math or who need additional instruction they're worried about teachers ability to cater to all those students needs and so i think that might be a part of like where that's coming from just from conversations that i've had with other students who are in favor of being able of um students who are deaf who are demonstrating hyper efficiency being able to go to the high school and take classes or being able to uh attend different classes based on skill levels i think that might have been a little bit where that's going to be done i should pass completely but also something i've heard in the balls
099from like all four of the class like freshman sophomore engineers and seniors and like from multiple different filters it's like walking through the halls i've heard it in past conversations especially when that decision was like just newly made so that's something i think might be one of those some students are worried that especially middle school students i have a two brothers in middle school and they were worried about um i have one who is set to go to the high school to take classes for math and he was worried about um having access and my brother's on track to my brother who is in sixth grade currently is on track to do that as well and so they were worried about kind of where their math journey would go um as a result of that
100decision so um concerned that my family and i've heard from other families that they have thank you sarah yeah and first i want to point out that we're now at eight o'clock so students if you have ap tests to study for if you just want to get a head start on your 11 hours of sleep that you can get tonight because you have a late start tomorrow i heard taylor talking about that um you were you're welcome to stay or you were welcome to go but um either way again we are so appreciative of your participation through this year and um i've been very happy to be with us and i had something else to say and i've never forgotten it so i'll put my hand down and i'll raise it again i can come
101around and raise your hand again get in the line ryan the thing i wanted to add as we think about these opportunities to hear from the community one of the first slides show we want to know more about what you do and we appreciate the fact that you did the survey so i think just starting from there with each one of these that's sort of like what we did with the naacp um what's that and say yes yeah just so again to start by talking about the role of the board so i think that's a great jumping off point for even in agenda planning for these sarah you remembered i remember what ryan said so what i was thinking is that you know people are going to be comfortable participating in different types of listening
102sessions and so i think and i think maybe for some providing a group with the survey ahead of time or to what sort of the themes are ahead of time so that that can be really sit around the table and talk about it might work better and there's some people who want to come to the big hearing with lots of board members sitting there looking uh not i guess important just what would fall with that but that seems like a silly statement um so do i think as we as we develop these listening sessions i think it's important to not have them all look the same because not everyone's going to be comfortable coming into a working session with the same um you're the same i guess another thought that just popped into my head
103was that while we're we're kind of we're commingling this community engagement piece with our strategic planning which is a perfectly natural and appropriate thing to do the other purpose of this community engagement piece is because we know that has been a weak point for this board for some time and so we're not just we're not just doing strategic planning here we're actually changing practice and board culture at the same time so i just want wanna admonish the group to you know consider you know going slow to go fast or going slow to go far that this is not a one and done you know you know after we do our strategic planning we're not done with community engagement we need to up our engagement in the community our community has been asking for this clearly
104in this survey we're hearing it loud and clear that we need to up our engagement we need to change how this board functions with regards to the community on an ongoing basis so just think of it as a marathon not not a sprint as we go through this this strategic planning process over the next year i'm wondering after you just said that events too if we can have some way of knowing if this was an effective modality and like and process for the community and for future engagement if this kind of setup works because that'll help set that up events because we can do the same thing over and over again but if it's not working well or if it's not meeting expectations that'd be good to know so you can modify it the next
105time um and then i was thinking about what you said um sir about like having different approaches if we can just have different approaches within this just build it that way so it's not the same there's different ways to interact as they're small groups with different staff and board members is there just a large session or is it a combination is there ways for people just to fill something out on paper or electronically there that don't feel comfortable talking so i think like having as many ways to engage as possible within those same sessions but still kind of putting them together um similar might be helpful because i don't want it to be like oh you did something extra for this group and not that group and stuff like that because that perception can happen
106um but i think that having all those different modalities might be a good idea [Music] sean this is probably already on our list and in our awareness but making sure that we're considering students families but also staff in that planning around listening sessions because there's a bunch of students affordables impact staff every week as well anybody else on this any other takeaways or i'm taking notes i will get these back to you but any any other pieces that stand out to you as far as how you want to how you want to plan what pieces you want to pull out for your for your listening sessions i've gotten some themes there's some great ideas here that you're mixing together um anything else really i'm surprised only say that because i i i love how engaged
107you are um ryan will you give me a time check we're doing okay if you want to transition to talking about the board evaluation and the section what people need to take it before the next meeting that would be i think we're ready for that okay great yes and then i think i will probably take a break after that yeah okay is that okay yeah we already need a breakdown okay this will probably be 15 minutes okay all right chris we're gonna we're gonna push through okay we're gonna power through okay so your next meeting uh is what june 9th i think is that right okay you're going to do that that's been moved because it was conflicted with graduation oh when is it for college health so it's the next is the next the
10816th oh okay um we'll talk about what you're gonna do uh i have class that night so i can't be there um but let's talk about what you're gonna do we'll figure that part out um so so you are going to take a board self-assessment that's the next piece that you're going to do um it's a it's a great time of year to do it you've gone through a year um what this this will look i don't know did you did you do the new one at the beginning of last year you may have um vince do you remember if you all did the new one i think we did but we only did the whole award do we have we have data from that i think okay that's good that's good and that will
109be a good start starting point so the board self-assessment that the newish one that we have um if you remember is um is very very research based um it's been almost normed across the country been used in many many places developed by a semi-local doctor of education and uh and and we've adopted it um to be diagnostic and also to be informative to what professional development you engage in as you move forward and so there are 12 standards in that it's great when you do it multiple times because we can produce data that says this is where this is what you said last time this is what you say this time you know here's where you said you wanted to move forward here's here's what we suggest um so what we'll do since your meeting
110is on the 16th we've got a little over a month um what i like to do is give you a couple of weeks to take it and then we generally need about a week to crunch the data so um so if you're going to go over this on june 16th what i want to do and i can i'm happy to answer any questions you have about the board self-assessment but i do believe you took this particular one um what i can do is get you that link at any time and you know if you had it back to me by like may 27th that would give i would give both you and me plenty of time to get that back to you um then what i would do is make sure that you had the
111report back in your hands so you could look at everything and come with i would also send you with some here are some questions i'm going to ask you so that you can be prepared you know what you're looking at i mean you'll know what you're looking at anyway but you can come with some with some questions in your head and also some focus questions that i would be asking you again we'll figure that part out but um some questions that that will be focused as part of um what you're doing i never let a board leave one of these sessions without some goals right because it's like completely useless to say okay here you go this is how you said you were doing fairly well um so we leave with something to do and
112we leave with some focused goals for the board right it may or may i mean it it may have to do with your engagement with the community it may have to do with your own professional development may have to do with the relationship with your superintendent with each other or with each other but you will leave um with something with some actionable plans so um so i can get you that link at any time and you can start on that and you'll have a good three-ish weeks to do that for your next meeting how does that sound okay that's the board self-assessment anything else from me on that in that arena okay i don't think so this is like the shortest thing i've ever done with you very short meetings yes yeah let's uh okay
113well yeah what's that we'll have to canada yeah we'll we'll connect um yeah i may have a little bit of a workaround that i can propose um okay so do you need anything else from me at this point i will get you the data that i mean obviously in pdf you can look at it you can sit with that i'll send that to you right now or i'll i'll send that's kimberly she can get it to you um and and we'll go from there does that work okay that's great awesome good to see you all thank you kristen thank you see you soon bye-bye okay and so we went five minutes so we will recess for five minutes and we're gonna return at 8 23. um the next item on our agenda is resolution number
114220501 for pride month does anyone wish to make a motion to approve this item motion wording is in your packet just lost half my statements sorry here i moved to adopt resolution number 22-0501 acknowledgement of pride month as submitted it has been moved by events and seconded by liu that we adopt resolution number 220501 acknowledgment of pride month submitted does is there any discussion um i just wanted to um say that it's i'm really happy that we're discussing this resolution tonight and um thinking ahead for june since our meeting is so late i just want to make sure people know why we're addressing it so early and it's nice to be ahead of resolutions like this instead of behind and for june whether or not um students and staff and family are out or whether
115or not they're out i hope they celebrate pride in whatever way makes sense to their um to their own selves and to their families and within the community and i just wanted to say that let me further discussion i would just like to extend a thank you to the uh directors who put uh time and energy into bringing this before us uh this evening um it's your effort is greatly appreciated i think this is a really important resolution for an important part of our community and i'm glad that we're going to have an opportunity to discuss it so thank you okay i just wanted to add into like because some people may wonder like what the difference between the lgbtqi 2s plus history month is and what a pride month resolution is um you'll hear
116some distinctions and the resolution as we read it but one is that the history month is about acknowledging the histories and pride month is about acknowledging the identities that found folk whole and so i wanted to make sure like folk had a little bit of an understanding of that and why that there's a couple of different um things happening with our resolutions um and you'll again hear reflected in some of the language with that um director baker how do you know i go i i unanimously and now um as we've done with other resolutions we will read this resolution for the record so that the people watching online or who watch the tape later can appreciate the these resolutions have been rich with information and historical context that has been really meaningful so we would
117like to continue sharing that with the community resolution number 22-0501 whereas the ravel school district recognizes and pays tribute to the significant contributions made in our community by lgbtqi2 plus us plus people and whereas the corvallis school district affirms that lgbtqi2s plus students family staff and community members should be valued for all aspects of identities and whereas pride month grew out of efforts of the lgbtqi2s plus liberation movement in the 1970s and whereas the lgbtqi2st liberation movement is widely recognized growing out of the activists efforts of los angeles for donuts san francisco pumpkins cafeteria and new york stonewall uprisings in response to violence against lgbtq by 2s plus people and whereas one year after the stonewall riots organizers launched a gay pride march in 1970 which continued annually and whereas lpg lb lgbtqi2 plus people
118have been and continue to be targeted by and whereas lgbtqi2s plus people have historically been criminalized and institutionalized because of openly embracing their identities and whereas lgbt qi2s plus people and especially trans youth continue to face targeted efforts that limit their ability to access healthcare sports and education that is i think identity at birmingham and whereas the community-based efforts celebrating the lgbtq205 2s plus prize during the 1970s evolved to what is now known as pride month annually in order to celebrate lgbtqia 2s plus identities whereas pride month was first proclaimed nationally in 1994 and whereas oregon has yet to proclaim pride month at the statewide level and whereas lgbtqi2s plus people have contributed to the history and collective future of corvallis and denton county oregon and whereas pride month provides an opportunity to continue the
119district's growth and learning about the many contributions of lgbtqi2s plus people to the nation world and local community and whereas education is a necessary component for creating a more equitable and anti-racist community nation and world and whereas the corvallis school district has made a commitment to equity and anti-racism and whereas the corvallis school district has a responsibility to honor and respect the diverse histories of our community and whereas the corvallis school district believes each and every student must be celebrated and appreciated for the distinct and vibrant contributions made by sharing cultures language ideas beliefs and values within the school community therefore let it be resolved by the board of education of the corvallis school district does hereby proclaim june 2022 as well as each june annually as pride month in the district and strongly encourages
120students families staff and community members to join in existing local celebrations and encourage all schools in the district to help highlight this month on in grade appropriate ways as well as highlight the contributions of all lgbtq i2s plus people in the local community and beyond both historically and in current times adopted by the board of directors of school district number 509-j corvallis of benton and lynn counties oregon at its regular meeting this fifth day of may sure i just wanted to thank calvin for helping read the resolution this evening i appreciate being able to read it alongside student voice so thank you for doing that i appreciate that [Music] so the next item on our agenda is consideration of the school um proposal calendar changes so all right go ahead right sorry i think he's
121going to come up to be involved in this this conversation tonight um on both of the calendars that she's been working on um so since we met last time and i brought forward a recommendation we've had quite a bit of um feedback and i would say that the majority of the feedback has been to maintain what was already established in the calendar and so what um i would recommend tonight is that we maintain the calendar for next year with the winter break as as previously adopted and but at the same time we need to look at the um change for trimesters at the middle school so while the board can make it's your prerogative obviously because scheduling and calendaring is up to you um based on the feedback i've had that that would be my
122recommendation does anyone have any questions or discussions i just wanted to just share some gratitude and appreciation i know that there were some concerns about or some that's what came up about making that change because well one we did hear from a few community members worried about parenting plans or shared parents with friends and that's something that we need to carry forward with us in thinking about moving forward and ryan i know that after you first proposed the change the district sent out a survey and realizing not a lot of folks knew that this was happening or that a change might happen and so i just wanted to share appreciation for taking that time to reach out and ask the community and really look at how would this impact folks because i think we would
123have having the information we had the last time that we met just knowing that other districts have a different schedule than our district does we were then reminded by the community how important it was to have that second advance and that folks had especially after two years of a pandemic missing out holiday celebrations with families looked that far ahead they've heard from quite a few educators as well as families saying that this was the time that they had planned for and bought tickets for or made arrangements for um together and that it was they were relying on what they thought the schedule had been approved previously quite a bit of time in advance was something that they could rely on at a time when there's so much unpredictability i really appreciate that you gave folks
124a chance to respond and let us know how something changing would impact them in that way it was something that you may not have been aware of otherwise yeah thank you yeah thank you i am i noticed that we weren't getting um any comments about it and i was concerned that people weren't aware of it and i didn't want the decision to be made tonight and then feel like we're informing to accept that at that time okay so your the recommended changes though then if you're looking at the documents are to keep the current winter break which is 12 23 through january 6th and not do the proposed change for winter break but then in the following two lines of the proposal do the proposed changes to non-school days that really impact middle schools because
125of the change to the trimester correct well we don't have a move is different than what we're talking about so yeah i think it's good for people to hear it as they look at the document for clarity i think i'm actually confused on the um current and propositions because they are proposed to change right they had been okay and so now based on the the feedback that we've received um i've checked i'm changing my proposal um it's not it's not changing it's okay that's where i'm like that's why i wanted to say it out loud for clarity yeah it's written the same as first read i don't know about that i don't know that that helped what i just said there's a little bit because i was trying to it's easier for me to like
126when there's a bunch of numbers and dates i need to look at it and stuff and so i was like looking at it while they were talking i was like wait a minute what do you have oh uh thanks um i also appreciate the reconsideration of the proposal um i just would like to acknowledge on all sides those that reached out um you know i when i when we got the calendar however long ago um and i looked at those dates uh they were fine i didn't think twice about them that's made sense and so um i'm deeply appreciative of the recognition that there are families for whom um something like when a break falls um requires a more consideration more thoughtfulness because of their family dynamics or circumstance than we realized because honestly if
127that had not been pointed out it would never have occurred to me to wonder if something like a school schedule would be important in providing guidance for how families that co-parent but are not co-located would um need to organize their time and so uh i i am appreciative of that i am sensitive to the fact that not going forward with a proposal to change that for this year does still leave in place some of our families having to navigate that hardship and so i don't think that that it was an easy decision to determine what to do um and yet we did hear from a large number of um people in the community that said but we've had this information for so long and we have we've acted on this and so um this is
128one of those situations that feels like there's not um you we literally cannot meet everyone's needs um at this point in time i'm grateful that in the looking ahead that those dates seem that they will do a better job but um really my takeaway from this was uh even calendars have embedded privilege if we are not uh mindful to reflect on um the diversity of our community in more ways than um how we are generally probably conditioned to think about diversity and so um i just would like to offer an invitation for um any family any families in our community for whom other things that might seem to be mundane or routine or taken for granted are not actually reflective of or align with your family's needs to please please share that um because uh
129there will always be things we don't think of um to consider and uh this is an example of that and so um i regret that you know we did not see that with time to make propose something different but i'm um i'm really appreciative of those who said hold on um i think that we can we need to continue to have those and so thank you for bringing that to our attention actually i have a question more about the um [Music] i don't know what the um did we talk about the trimester schedule before or is that something or like i'm curious about that a little bit is that something that we're gonna hear about a little bit more later on we um mentioned it briefly last time with the with the calendar document but
130not in um more detail but um nikki understands that um i was just curious like what brought about that change trimester change because that does impact the calendar yeah yeah it does and so um our teachers have reached out to me of the middle school teachers um with some concerns about the schedule so we i got a let's see i surveyed teachers about like what's working well what's not working well if you have an easy button what would you fix like what are the things that really challenge you in the schedule and challenge our students like what works for students and not not working for students i ask teachers to answer their question from their perspective and also what they're seeing in the students i also sent a survey to students and asked questions about
131things like lunch do you have enough time to get lunch that was something we were hearing from students um what did you what do you consider to be the ideal period length for learning so we took all of that information all teachers were invited to be on the committee and kind of looked through the data and talked about um some of the limitations some of the things we really like about the current schedule and and also things that weren't working well for adults or for kids um and explored many different schedules um what was what stood out is that um teachers really wanted to ensure that students feel like that students have electives at the middle school and places where they are experiencing um like learning in an area that they're really interested in and
132passionate about so that that was a big focus and they also we we honestly talked a lot about lunch and making sure students have had a good time to get through lunch so as we talk about those things like what emerged first was talking about having making sure we have two lunches so that's not anything to do with the trimester and then we talked about different ways to make sure students get electives students do have a lot of electives in seven periods they're also we have 12 year olds managing seven different classes a day seven different adult ways of teaching and learning and the teachers see the stress and the students and the students have shared it's a lot to manage um seven different ways and and that the day those days when there are
133seven periods and they're 40 minutes long it just feels like okay i just sat down i just was getting into it and then i'm out and another group is coming in so we talked about reducing the number of students um that the number of classes students take and the number of students teachers see per day and that led us to looking at what could we do with six if we did six periods on the semester schedule there is not a lot of options for um four electives so knowing that electives are important we started to look at what else could we do to make sure that students still have access to electives and that's where we land we started looking at trimester schedules and they they are using a trimester schedule at the middle school
134in salem our administrators reached out to administrators there to learn more about it and the committee looked at at that schedule and thought we can maintain electives we're reducing the overall number of students classes students are taking at a time and that checks a couple of boxes and we can create a schedule where we have two lunches and providing adequate time for students to get lunch because one thing is when there's only one lunch part of the challenge is getting all the students through to get lunch i mean just the sheer numbers and so those are the factors that i feel like were big parts of the discussion and then led us to saying if we want to maintain electives and we think seven is too many what can we do differently and learn about
135travis awesome thanks nikki i think it's helpful to know like why it's changed because it's going to change next year and i'm sure you all are going to put something out about it um yes our middle school families have received uh some i think two communications about it an initial one that one out and then one with a lot more detail because students are starting to think about what courses they are interested in yeah extra awesome yeah and teachers are also looking at what sorts of electives can they um add um especially in the areas of science and social studies so some some creative ways of also adding and enhancing those areas yeah good to know especially if somebody has like multiple children that are years apart and they're like last time a few years
136ago yeah so thank you for taking the time next time yeah and so what that does is that you look at those changes that are really related to conferences is now middle schools need a day between like this different day that's off between the trimesters to grade and give feedback so we've added in rather than having the main block of baby right in the middle of the year the middle schools need the two days on for grading on either side so there's some shifting of what days they were attending to weren't attending to attending and um we what we also did you'll see here is conferences are shifted later by one week because then that actually aligns to the trimester we thought about just putting like just shipping middle school but when i think about
137the feedback that families gave us in the survey about calendar they said we need to be um we need to have our kids aligned we need school days to be school days for everybody and non-school days to be non-school days for everybody we don't quite hit this in this calendar we do in the subsequent two years this is the closest we could do without making really drastic changes it sounds like there may be some days that are not aligned across the different schools about what you were doing for next year yes and so when i i have to i get it's okay if you don't have them all memorized but we're not looking at major holiday periods that aren't no holiday periods are the same um for all kids but um and as it was
138like this is where the calendar is shifting and the next is a subsequent two years so for example if you look at that last line um conferences were 3 8 through 10 at elementary and middle and at high school they only had 310 as a non-school day so that pattern is maintained so that's a day that's just that was what the old calendar was and that's a way that they continue to not be aligned um the other way i believe has to do with conferences um up at the top so you can see elementary conferences um i have to make sure i'm getting this we're 10 26 through 10 28 those stay the same middle school was 10 26 through 28th now 10 26 becomes a school day for middle it is already a school
139day for high so now elementary and middle are off on that day of october 26th and that's because when we're counting days like i literally had to move what was 10 26 and move it to 12.5 to make that grading day between so every staff member who's gotten this assignment says that exactly yes it is very challenging and he wants to do it yeah jennifer has said that said that nobody does it twice there's a reason okay is there any more um so just a clarifying question fit under the supposed schedule all three of middle school elementary school and high school you're moving to trimesters no no no just a middle school but what happens is middle school needs these grading days at the trimester mark and so those days had to be kind of
140added in so one way we added one end was by shifting conferences back one week because that aligned with the end of this trimester but it was already pretty it was the same as elementary conferences and a non-school day for high school okay so high school volunteers from middle school are all going on schedule but elementary school and high school are going to be semesters after middle school they're great yes they're around just around related to breeding periods okay but all the actual days where students are going to school except there's there's a couple of exceptions and they're only having in the 23 24 and 23 20 yeah in the next two years yeah the non-school days and school days are allowing people so we have moved away from that in the next two years
141and it can be especially hard for families that rely on older children to be daycare providers so yes that's true yeah so any shauna all right keep coming up with these as i'm staring at the at the calendar but i guess i just wanted to note that i know we got an email about this too around conference days and spring break time when looking at march especially with elementary middle that there are three conference days a week and then spring break following it so just wanting to note i know that there's so many complexities with trying to figure out where those states fall where those opportunities are for for grading as well as connecting with families um just back to teresa's point around what might create purchase for families that to me looks like the
142moment that i potentially could and so thinking about if we move forward with adopting this calendar are there opportunities there for community partnerships boys and girls club or others in terms of looking at opening up access to their days through community partners or in other ways yeah they are closed together and in the following year we tried to move them to april so that the days were spread out and and again i had a few more limitations on this calendar oh that makes sense and i know it's something it never comes up perfectly yeah but just thinking thinking ahead of how can we reduce some of the burden that could come out things yeah and that is one of the things i also thought of is how you know having it early like the benefit
143is we can share it with folks in the community um who a lot of families rely on for care when schools are closed whether that's kids spirit boys and girls club outdoors the environmental learning center i mean those are some of the ones i hear a lot about um and getting the word out to them now and saying this these are our non-school days yeah um i never care i'm glad you pointed that out shawna because like as a single parent like i understand like that particular like grouping next to spring break is hard and so thanks for playing yeah on the moving of the calendar the conferences into april also gives us it gives us a little bit of a break in that like stretch from spring break to june which just is such
144a slog so um i think that's helpful too yes and that's that i mean we'll get to that when i when um amy lisa and i worked on revising the next two years we still have these trimester like 56 57 day blocks we're working on so we were thinking we really need these brakes built in and then we also have these things like a mid-year point a trimester point that are also influencing how things play out but it's i think we still try to meet all the goals in the revisions you'll see in those later so um so we need a motion for the revised 20 22 23 school calendar that's the first step but it's not it's not it's the only parts of the revision are correct yeah and the proposed motion is to
145adopt all of the changes so if you agree with ryan's proposal does this need to get rewarded for the language so it says something else that was my question like if yeah cause this one is submitted and what's the writing that's not this is wanting to weigh in here [Laughter] so can we just move to adopt the proposed 2223 changes to the trimester calendar for middle school that's the only change we're making now right for 22. elementary and high so it's accepting the changes for conferences but keeping maintaining the winter break that's winter break as and that's already published okay so i think it is because we want people to know because we'll be able to come back to the middle of the june right right well that's that's because we just have to have
146a new motion it's not what's it special [Music] i make a motion to adopt the 2022 to 2023 trimester schedule for middle schools and conference date changes as submitted those two only two things second it has been moved by lou and seconded by therese because that's so specific yeah okay that we adopt the proposed changes the middle school calendar to trimesters and the adjustments to cut to conference schedules that follow with that is there any further discussion no so director baker how are you i know by director thomas aye dr white here aye director aye thank you dr joe i passes unanimously four twenty five calendars right and this is much more straightforward and this is just of course we're not changing anything we're done we are constantly adopting them so um melissa shared with
147you um an initial proposal and um after that proposal was when the teachers at middle at the middle level moved to this trimester so what you see so nothing's none of these have been published except in the word book the initial proposal there are a few changes you'll see and i highlighted them in yellow to make it even easier um so in this proposal winter break is moved back one week not for next year this is this is for 2020 this is 23 24. so it's yes winter break is moved back one week and then you can see some additional non-school days and some shifts to non-school days so for example 12-1 is new 2-2 was there but it's not coupled with 2 1. 315 is new and you can see 4 15 through 16
148is shifted to 4 17 through 19. when you see dates that are kind of close on the left and then in bright yellow on the right those have been shifted and again these are all the ways that we are trying to accommodate some of the requests that came through the family survey about the calendar spread the breaks out over the months make sure kids are all attending or not attending k12 on the same days um have conferences you know spread out quarterly fewer disruptions in one month which is what we just talked about in the last calendar um the winter breaks shift to end on 1-1 um is that the one that's in alignment with most of the rest of the state okay that was my that was just my interest any other questions about
149the 2020 30 24 24 25 pounders do we have a motion i just had a confirmation rather than a question just on i remember in an earlier discussion that there was also discussion on how to best use teacher development timer days and how one of those spread out and that was built into this calendar yes so usually what i've learned as you've said people do this once and walk away um is there multiple layers to doing a calendar so this is like the public facing layer and then there is another layer that really lies in hr and it's like then we look at those non-school days and what is happening on those days um and so this was built on thinking about when professional development could happen and teachers would have time to learn and
150implement um we have sometimes had professional development happen like say on a day right before a break um and i know my own mind like if i learned something and then i'm off for a week or two it's hard to come back and go what can i learn that i thought was really awesome that i want to try and so trying to think about those times when it's not the busiest time of year right at the start it's a hard thing to learn because you're thinking oh my gosh i've got all these kids coming and the things i want to try and setting up my classroom um and that it further in is a better time for learning for teachers so we did try to space out and calendar the actual work days for teachers
151as well as when we worked on this to make sure we were meeting anything else we have a motion i move to adopt the 2023 24 and the 20 24 25 school calendars as submitted has been moved by terese and sentenced by lou that we adopt the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school calendars as submitted the final discussion very none i it should be getting easier right it is thank you thank you so the next item on our agenda is consolidated action as a reminder the items under this portion of the agenda are for action does anyone have any questions about anything in consolidated action i only have a comment it's on item 11c the uh mental health clinical survival supervisor uh position okay that was the meeting schedule for our meetings but i don't know because
152did we already vote for our ones for next year we did that we did that first that's not an easy one yeah never [Music] mind um all right i would just like to really express my appreciation for the innovation and creativity of the team the mental health team um in securing this funding that supports the launching of this position i just i'm really impressed that they went out and bird hunted down 250 000 to launch a position that is gonna you know advance our agenda on diversity equity and inclusion um in this field and so i'm just really excited and another thing that i really appreciated that that was in this report that currently so and i mean we're only a couple years into really operationalizing this this investment that the board and district made
153but already um this program is recovering 85 percent of its funding back into the general fund with a goal of being revenue neutral and so i mean you know hats off to the superintendent and the district team for taking this risk and launching this program there's joe good work joe i mean you're really making a win out of this and that's just saying and i'm just talking about finance we're not even talking about the impact on kids i mean you know looking across the state looking across the nation um i have to say that our kids are probably doing all quite a bit better than in our you know partner districts because we made this investment when it was important and supported our kids through the pandemic and our kids are going to be able
154to engage in school be ready recover from the impacts of the in the pandemic and be more resilient because of this so i'm just really delighted and appreciative and thank you for the district team and specifically joe lykem for your leadership thanks a lot um i one second everything vince just said um and i think that really was highlighted this evening when our our um student representatives taylor said that there's a waiting list for the mental health provider at chs and that students are giving that service rave reviews so an opportunity to build that program i think is really exciting especially with the focus on um equity and um i just i'm really proud of our district for this work i think it's it's really impactful for our students markets i spend a lot of
155time in the neighboring districts because of work and so the subject of mental health you know comes up often with families and such and i continue to find parents in other communities who are just their jaws just drop when they realize they hear that corvallis is providing these services it's it's a it's a model program i hope that our neighboring communities will get curious and decide to explore and um seek out uh you know conversations maybe they already are um but i i hope that they that they do because i can tell you from the family level um there are community in the communities around us that our families hungry for um a similar opportunity so you know good job corvallis and ryan and your team and the leadership to make this happen here and
156now let's see if we can get other folks jazzed and and spread you know as far and wide as we can for our for our kids because we know mental health is just so very important so but i am really proud to be in a district where uh we we took the gamble and decided to figure out how to pull this off and i say we but you know we didn't do anything you guys have done all of the hard work um and and you've done it very well i took my hand down because sarah said everything i was going to say but again it was really recognizing joe um and going out and looking for resources um recognizing our a number of our goals student health and wellness as well as recruiting and retaining
157a diverse workforce and so this um money helps us to do both of those things which is super exciting so yeah hats off to jeff anything else on this specific item just everything that's already been said basically and i think that sometimes the outcomes are hard for people to see because they're not right away and i just wanted to point that out too like we'll see the outcomes with student impact not just the immediate ones of them having the services they need but also how that will positively impact academics um in the future so i'm excited to see the larger scale impact as well as the immediate unnecessary impacts that are being provided from these and to our earlier conversation about board goals and communication with the community i think this is the really uh
158probably one of the most tangible and salient examples we can provide to the community around direct connection to programming and how it is an extension of our board goals related to wellness and so i hope when we are in communication with folks you know well i think a lot of the community maybe not everybody but a lot of the community is aware uh that this is part of our um of our district now this these services are part of our district and so really helping make that direct connection about this is what a board of goal is for is to provide this guidance it that it is up to the district staff it's up to the leadership of the superintendent to figure out how to give feet to that goal and to make it really
159you know really come to life but this is an example of where the board has done its job and said we would like our kids and our families to be healthier and more well and the district said how about let's do this and then here we are this time later with this really tangible program that's such an investment in wellness and i think it's just a great illustration of that the relationship between what we are seeing in our schools and the role of the board to provide a larger vision theresa i really appreciate what you just said because you were thinking the same thing i did i you know i can go back i know where where i can trace this all the way back to 2018 when we were sitting in a training with
160you remember the chalkboard project and we were sitting across the table from medford and they were like you know what are you doing about your mental health how do you know if your kids are doing okay oh we do youth truth and then superintendent went out and got youth truth and we asked and he showed us some really tough data and it's one of the things i really appreciate about this district is that they are courageous they're they're you know they're not afraid to ask hard questions and then you know get those tough answers it was like uh oh we have work to do and ju the fact that we have joe lycomb in the room with us and that we have this program that is so successful and that we're having this impact on
161our kids is directly related to the focus that this board has had on supporting our kids and supporting their social and emotional learning so just immensely proud moment for this whole team in making this possible uh i just want to express my appreciation for the thanks to the board but um as much as uh i've done some leadership on this project i really want to extend uh that congratulations down to my team um we have an amazing group of of staff that come from incredibly diverse backgrounds and connect with students um in ways that even as a mental health professional who's been doing this for almost 20 years i've never seen before and so um i i get the privilege of standing on the shoulders of giants and i feel privileged that we're going to
162be able to add another leader to our team to help support the rest of the staff because their longevity and work with our students is what's really going to make it matter so thank you all and i will carry your thanks back to my team um i thank you joe um and and please do take our thanks back to your staff because they're in the trenches with the kids um i wanted to add to what therese said about the community being aware of this program and i think sometimes the community isn't aware that one of the things that when this program was first proposed we were told it's going to be able to fund itself and that seemed fabulous um but it wasn't happening yet and now we're really darn close we're 85 so again
163if we want to look at responsible fiscal management of a school district here we are providing a service that no other districts are providing and it's we're able to to pay for it by offering the program and i think that's just you know the innovation and the creativity that had to go into figuring out how to do that is really impressive and it's um you know it's done nothing but benefit children so i think that's an important thing to acknowledge also are we ready to move on to our next another item it's a super easy question probably just their vision for the june 23 meeting is that to reflect the graduation thing overlap okay cool thanks that was an easy question trying to help us with that one anything else in consolidated action does anyone
164wish to make a motion move to approve consolidated action for a second removed by this and seconded by teresa that we approve the items and consolidated actions oh is there any final discussion harry none director baker how do you vote i vote by secretary company aye right there uh director adam aye director jones hi but i is unanimously thank you so next item on our agenda is consolidated information as a reminder the items under this portion of the agenda are for discussion would anyone like to discuss any of the items in consolidated information no with that we will move on to the next item on our agenda which is board member comments does anyone have anything they would like to share shawna so i just wanted to um before we close i know some comments
165to just take time to acknowledge national teacher appreciation week here in the boardroom and i know ryan you mentioned that earlier another a few others in terms of the team this is how important and vital teachers educators and other staff as well are to our society and to uplifting our children and families and just to share take a moment to share our gratitude for all that thank you hello um i just wanted to take a moment to recognize murdered in the indigenous women's day it's today it's a national day and it's um there's a lot that goes into that and i would encourage us to think about how to participate in that in the future i know that there's been questions from students about it to me and besides my own child but but by
166other folk and staff and i think there's interest in learning more about that and greater for three ways but it's something that's significant and needs a lot of awareness and education on and so i just wanted to acknowledge that and for other folks that um are struggling with missing loved ones out there thanks um i just want to recognize that it's may it's may 5th we're almost through the school year and our schools have stayed open and so yay isn't that fantastic we're making plans for things like graduation it's very exciting um to that end i want to point out that we are starting to see an uptick in benton county numbers so please please let's not let down our guard we have been so vigilant we've done such a great job that's the reason
167that we've been able to keep our doors open and let our kids have a normal school year uh with the tremendous um gift of our teachers and our classified staff and administrators who have worked really hard to make this year happen and so um but it is important to remember that you know our we are almost twice as many cases um per day rate as we were two weeks ago and that's not a small number um and so um let's finish out the year strong because we have managed to stay on top of it so far so please be safe um i want to mention that ballots should be in people's houses and the school local option levy is on the ballot and ballots must be returned or postmarked by may 17th and this is
168a critical piece of the funding for a district that as we've seen this evening is very fiscally responsible and um those funds get used for important things like reducing class sizes and supporting art and music and career and technical education and counselors in our schools future things that the community has told us that are important and my value so please return your ballots by may 17th um and if you've got any questions about the local option lobby i am happy to answer them so you can find my information on the district website thank you anything else with that our meaning is adjourned
