All are meeting the order 5:45. We have a new agenda. Everyone have a copy of that. >> Okay. Um first thing on our agenda is to vote to appoint our board member zone one. Um we have one applicant, Lori Logger. Everyone got her applicant letter. I assume we've read through it. So, um, this point have a vote and see if everyone wants to move forward. So, um, probably need to do >> for. >> Okay. Those in favor? >> I. >> Perfect. Uh, Lori, would you accept our nomination? >> Accept that. Thank you. >> Perfect. Um, I guess we have a oath of office. Do we have a copy of that? >> It's just a signature. >> Okay. >> Formal. >> Sounds good. Um, Lori, we have a packet ready for you if you'd like to
join us. Yeah, >> with that we're going to move to executive. So any non direct staff or administrators leave for a moment. Second filter in How do you see the open session 605? Five um minutes. Did anyone see anything in the minutes? >> Motion to approve the minutes from the regular version against >> second. Those in favor. >> Okay. Um consent agenda. Um, we need to make a change. Uh, letter letter D will be tabled and moved to next month's board meeting. And then um number eight, letter A, our old business board vacancy has been built as earlier. Let's see bills. Anything in the bills jump out at anyone? It's kind of more the construction side, but I seem to get a couple more freezer repairs. One down there. >> Yeah, we can't seem to
avoid it. We're on the shop for a little time. >> You can't do it in the middle of the year. It's >> You just think it goes out. You got to fix it. >> Yeah. Oh, yeah. say another month then in theory be empty other than summer. Okay. U approval of the 2627 academic calendar. See >> I did not put one in there. >> Okay. >> So stack. Mhm. So, what I did, uh, I'm going to ask you guys to table this and tell June as well. Um, partly because, well, two reasons for it. The first is they're still working through the the executive order process in terms of what the the new expectations are going to be. We just got a survey from the Department of Education, I think last week, that's asking us
to to let them know what our 2020 20 24 25 hours were. It was 25 26 hours were um the hours that came out previously uh were not um that was not done by the state of Oregon. It was done by a nonprofit organization. So OD wants to have their own numbers. So that's the one sheet that you see. Um, and if you look at that 202425, uh, we were about 11:38 at the grade school, 11:36 this year at the grade school. Um, next year, um, I've this calendar reflects a few more hours about 20 more hours at the grade school. Same at the high school, but we have started having conversations. The one thing that was troublesome with this cal with this particular calendar that I handed you that says dropped at the top.
Uh there is almost no PD in that calendar. >> Uh there's maybe a couple of days to be in during the inservice week which is a super busy week anyway. Um but to meet the hours they're saying we're going to have to meet. Uh there's not a lot of extra time in that calendar and we are going to have to go one week prior or one week late. It's it's going to happen one way or the other. So, I guess uh one question for you guys is do we want to look at the week early or do we want to look at the week late? Um I haven't had a lot of feedback on either end. I haven't really asked um just because we've been unsure who we were, but we just can't get enough
days. Like I said, as it sits going, I think I put on here starting the week before Labor Day. Um it we get out at about the same time, which is pretty early. Uh, and like I said, there are almost no PD days in there. Uh, who talked as an admin team about some creative ways we could create some PD time. For example, we could extend the school day by 15 minutes. Uh, and gain another hour on Fridays, send the kids out right after lunch. Um, and gain another I think we did I think we figured out about 90 minutes at the grade school, about an hour 20 at the high school for PD time every Friday. Uh we could create two Friday schedules, one as it is today and then maybe create one where
we um take some more time off based on but we have to add minutes. We can't do any nothing is going to work out. Uh they still haven't the the limit on PD time and uh parent teacher conference time that was put in with the executive order is still there. There's opinions that they're going to back away from that, but that until they make their deals around that is no. So that could be July or August before we we know what they're going to do. So it's messy. So I need I need a little more time to put it together. >> So >> just need a motion to Okay, we move that we move the 26 27 school calendar till the June meeting. >> Second. >> It's much later than we want, but yeah, we'll
get it out. >> Those in favor? I >> we still discuss that. >> Yeah, >> there's a few. So, you're thinking like to get more professional development days, >> you're thinking even doing some half Fridays, but extending the days, the other days >> it what we talked about doing and it was just kind of us just sitting around trying to figure out how can we find some more time because it doesn't feel great. and knowing we've got the interim assessments coming in next year, knowing we've got plenty of new curriculum that we'd love to spend a little bit more time with, um, we've got things that we feel like we could be doing. So, we were just throwing around ideas and I think it was Richard's idea actually, >> but that we could if we
go a little bit longer Monday through Thursday. >> Yeah. um we could gain some more time on Friday and having have kind have a standing time uh again at the grade school of the K5 especially trying to create some time for them to have their their title meetings and the meetings that they do um that are right now living after school. So that was one option. Just one option. We could extend we could we could go we could go an early and a week late >> and then carve out PD days during the year. That would be acceptable too. Um our calendar has tended to be pretty condensed. Uh little bit longer days, a little bit fewer weeks. That's kind of been our traditional calendar. Uh I talked to other people and very few people
schools graduate on June 4th or June 5th. It's pretty early. >> Uh and a lot of schools go to school before Labor Day, especially when it lands like it did here, which is extremely late. >> I don't have any choice on that this year. >> So there there's both options. I'd love to hear opinions on would you rather go with a little bit longer day and carve out some time on Friday, every Friday? Uh would you rather have kind of another hybrid type of schedule where one week maybe you that gets messy >> right >> when you start doing that um or you know do we want to look at extending the the year by a little bit and carving out some extra days and you know as we have in the past where you
put one in October you put one >> what do you think would be most effective probably in every Friday or like you know something more consistent than like here you get a day and then in three months you get another to look back at this material and try to learn it again. >> I could see it. I could see it cutting both ways. Yeah. Um you get a little bit too routine and all of a sudden >> you're not doing anything with that Friday time. Right. >> Right. >> I was curious if 90 minutes was going to be enough time to like get in deep dive get enough time to do it before it's time before it's over. I wasn't sure. >> I think that we were thinking more along the lines of how do
we create some time for people to meet create time for to to deal with specific issues that might come up. you know, 90 minutes isn't a lot of time, but if you're trying to figure out some curriculum or trying to figure out, you know, how you're going to do the assessment, um, that, you know, if it's every Friday, probably, >> you know, I mean, I was plenty on board with the 4 day week. So, >> I don't mind keeping the Friday shorter for the kids and then the staff stays. That's that's okay with me. Um, and as far as the uh, you know, how we want to do it. Um, I think with what is it? Memorials the first >> Labor Day week. >> Labor Day. >> Yeah. Whichever. It'd be nice to still have
a drop, you know, here's the line and then we start or here's the line, we're done. As far as I'm concerned to kind of kick off or start back. And I do believe that there that o OD is going to go down the path of saying that if you know an inclement weather day, it it knocks you below your hours, you're going to have to make up your weather day, you know. So I'm >> they've been pretty holding on to that one. >> Do you figure any of those into this? >> This gives us about 20 hours of spare time off. That's two days. 12. >> We could have those days for other things, too. We've had them for >> flood. Mhm. >> You know, >> so it's not just weather related. It could be
anything. And school doesn't work well when you have power. No. Especially in the winter. Yeah. Hey, you think you'll have more of a clear idea than in a month? Uh, >> I just did a webinar today that was so I think we're they're trying to get word out and OD is kind of stuck in the middle. They're trying to make rules around something they've been given and trying to make it make sense. Um, they just it's just not going to move very fast. Hopefully. I guess I'm living under the assumption that it's going to be pretty tight. You're not going to give a lot of legal. Any other questions or ways you want to steer bill and start looking? Sounds like you have your word cut out already on that one. Um, our next thing
is letter of intent for the classified staff. We have our list here of employees that that hoping to rehire. So interesting to see some of the years with the district. One one person 28 years. That's pretty impressive to say one job. Um, next thing approval of 2526 assistant track coach Carlos Vasquez say he's been doing just didn't get on the early one. And then approval for 2526 forest camp advisor Olivia Ferrario. Richard, do you have any insight how horse camp went? >> Sound like it went well. Like I said, all the kids made it back, so good. No, the kids today, I think they were going through some pictures. Kids were pretty excited, pretty loud, so I kind of avoided that area while they were looking at it. But I think it went well. Yeah,
it always I think kids always enjoy that. >> Excellent. Um, let's see. Review of certified staff not returning 26 27. We have Susan Clark, the MHS special education teacher. Um hopefully we can get her for few hours or something. Sounds like um just so everyone knows um my wife is included on the um classified step staff. So I cannot vote on this one. >> Motion to approve the consent agenda as a second. Those in favor I you um communications. We have a letter to Jason um Blake Lee with Coyote Steel. Um anyway, he gave us about half a pickup load of pieces the kids were able to cut up and make. So I was in there get some other stuff and what do you have? So good. That's great. >> So that turned out good.
He said if we I told Mr. Mullen access this if we need something specific he may be able to get it donated. So yeah, >> you might talk to Scott too because he's been talking to the guy that did the did the work on our fishing boat and that this and he's trying to get stuff donated as well from our steel guy so we have enough a lot more for >> when school starts next year. So >> Oh yeah, >> I'll have him talk to you about that. Yeah, I'll tell Jim and we'll >> uh let's see. Meet the teacher. Any teachers? >> Just so happens I came up on the agenda in other routes. >> Thank you for coming. >> You're welcome. I'm not sure what you all want to know. So, I just
kind of thought I'd share a little bit about So, the resource class, as you may or might not know, is students who have an IEP who a team decided that they need know these extra services to help them get through school. So, in that world, there's a whole lot of different things that go on and we not only have students of varying levels, none of 12 academically, but skill-wise. And so based on their IEP and other little bits of information that I get, you know, I try to address those needs and to help them be most successful as they go through school. And my focus has always been when I got into education, helping kids transition into adult life. And so I do some of that as well. >> Yeah. >> So I just I
copied some things. I took any names off to just kind of give you a little visual because I'm a teacher and I have materials. Awesome. Um, so the first thing here is um the projected case load for next year. It just gives really kind of like dates like I need to keep track of course the paperwork dates when things are due. So it's just a little mini spreadsheet that has that what students eligibilities is um pre levels um I can't remember what's all in there but just a little snip snapshot. So, um I've already been in touch with um the grade school and I know we have two kids so far projected coming over here, but from my experience in the past many years I've been doing this. Um they come out of the woodwork
in the fall and you know sometimes kids leave that you didn't expect to be leaving. And so that's just a propose. Um this is a little um spreadsheet I create because I try to get a handle on students reading levels um really early on because that really plays into um a lot of times their success in all their classes. And so I want to address whatever those needs are. And so that kind of lists um like some data from assessments that I gave at the beginning of the year. And I believe that one also at the end the last column I listed which teachers every student has. So I I I just have that that connection that I know who I need to inform of whatever. This is something I um in the second semester
I um developed I have one um single period class and then I have an every other day block class. And in the block class I have the greatest number of kids that I could do some of these extra things with with transition. The other class I have um a junior and a senior or two seniors and a junior and it's a little difficult um with addressing a lot of other things when the focus was really to try to get those students to earn their diploma. So there's a whole lot of focus in that and some of these other things we don't get to do. But this little thing um from my um block class shows that we do academic skill building for a little part of the period in part of the week and then
the rest of the period they have work time where they get um support from myself and my a um and then um I've entered in in the latter part of the week like job skills stuff. And so we did um a cool thing early in the semester where I posted um job positions that we could do something because that um modular out there is a great place to be able to do a lot of this kind of stuff. And there's a little kitchen there. And so I wanted to give them some um job readiness skills. And so I posted positions because my idea was that I was going to um have these students take different positions to make little like jumbo cookies, you know. And originally my my grandiose plan that we could somehow have
a little cafe or cell list or something, but it ended up that we just kind of made them for ourselves. But I did want them to um you know know what it was like to apply for jobs. So, I posted those positions and then I had the students with some instruction write a little letter of interest and tell me based on the duties on that posting why they're good for that position. So, they kind of had to apply for which position they got. And we had two food preppers, we had a baker, which we only have a little toaster oven, but they were a baker. Um, we had a dishwasher, we had a packager because they got little packages for them to put their jumbo cookies in and they really had to follow in any
position they had their task list to do it right just as an employer would want them to do. So there's the various task lists. Um, and then after they were done with that on a Friday, um, then I would give them like one of these half sheets. This is um called workplace readiness feedback form because I was paying attention to how they were doing their job, how they were following their list, how they were interacting with others and so on and so forth. And so I give them feedback and then I talk with them about what they did and what they what they, you know, needed to get a little bit better about. So that's all entered into this. I'm going to pass around this. In the first semester, going back to the reading skills,
um I determined early on that there was a number of students that really lacked some basic um basic reading skills. Um so this program that I've used for many years, I've been doing special ed for well since 2008 is when I became official as a special ed teacher, but I've been um teaching since the mid 90s. I used to be a science teacher. But anyway, this program I come across years ago. It's an excellent program. It's actually for um secondary students. So, junior and senior high school students. So, they're not like, you know, dealing with little, you know, baby words. They're actually learning how to decode larger words. And so, there this is a lot of drill and repetition. But I test the students before we start the program and then I test them afterward.
And every one of the students that did that program, they did improve their ability to decode multi-elabic words and their fluency and so on. So, um it does really work. And I I I like to use it with students that need it. I think it gives them a a bump up not only in reading but in writing as well because reading and writing behind it. Um this is just a little you know math is a whole different animal. It's it's it's not like something that I can um except for maybe a student maybe that has life skills and we want to really work on money skills with that student. But the other students, they they're in gened classes and so I have to cater how I work with them and what kind of support I
give them based on what they're asked to do in their gen classes. This is just an example of a little tip sheet I created for students to learn how to actually solve an equation. Just little simple steps and then little examples so they could refer to it, maybe take it home and maybe somebody at home could even help them like, "Oh, okay. We got to do that next." You know what I mean? just some little there's just all these other little little things that go on. And my aid Steve, he's excellent at doing the same kind of thing. He does a lot of research like he's a student himself, so he can support, you know, the kiddos in whatever they're working on, whatever novel they're reading or um yeah, he we work really well together.
He gets it and I don't have to give him a whole lot of direction. >> He's great. Um, so I don't know, there's probably some things I forgot that I would like to share, but um, if anybody has any questions, >> that's great. >> Yeah, good stuff. >> Yeah, I I love, you know, I got into education because I really wanted to help those kids that were struggling. I just didn't know back in the 80s, dating myself, um, that that was special ed. I didn't encounter that realization until I was teaching with um, some teen girls that are in the foster care system in Eugene. It's like, oh, this is special education. Um, this is the this is my audience right here. And so then I got my endorsement and I flipped from science to
special ed. And so >> we Yeah. >> Thank you very much. >> You're welcome. >> Yeah. >> I don't know if you want your stuff back now or we can leave it with him. >> But when you're finished, it's okay. >> Thank you. Hear that? >> You've already had a long day, so you don't need to stick around if you don't. Thank you. >> The important time I had to come back in for meeting with us. Okay. All right. Thank you very much. You >> have a good evening. You too. >> Let's see. the uh construction update, building inspection committee. >> Uh they are still doing finding work. Uh they've been out several times in different areas. Uh I've got a Zoom uh meeting on Thursday morning, I think. Uh just to go over the
um the plans that they have up to this point in time. Keep posted. I'm not sure what what they're going to give me on Thursday. Again, we're not trying to do a whole lot now. We're We're shooting for summer 27 for the bulk. >> Yeah. Are they gonna still try and do any of the foundation prep? >> We don't know. >> Okay. Um Lori, just so you know, we're doing a seismic from the fire doors. Actually, it's from the hallway from the boys bathroom. um enrollment and attendance like holding steady pretty close to last year and this this time of the year it interesting >> attendance we don't really have much of a a form or anything. How are you guys seeing for attendance? Everyone got the spring excitement there? No seniors today. >> Um
I was just curious about uh like our how much of our freshman class is in the building and not in the building as far as like online like what's does it seem like it's pretty heavy going online for that group or >> Well, there's been a handful. Yeah. But it always it's always a moving target it feels like. >> Yeah. But um various reasons we meet with every family that looking at that option you know a lot of different reasons or purposes for let's say it's been they came in originally we forecast we thought we have about 20 21 they put them all in one English class one class and then they they kind of exploded on us and I think was up to like 30 at one point in time. Um, but yeah, there's
been a I couldn't give you an exact number without my desk, but it's been a handful, which which has made the class a little more manageable because we didn't have 32 seats per school, right? Yes, it's a few. And some are doing really, really, really well on, you know, some not so much, but that's just wondering. Yeah, I had heard that we had a pretty large amount of them that were leaving the building and going down. Just curious there was a trend as to why. Yeah, I'm just curious. Excuse me. Yeah, all districts are trying to figure out what's how do you keep kids here? So, I think that's why we put so much money in the CTE and the the skill building. >> Great. um administrative update and we'll start at the grade school,
Mr. Fielder. >> All right. So, yeah, just a real uh kind of some recap from April. Uh seventh eighth grade visit to OSU went really well. Uh sounds like it a little awkward walking around on college campus, but sounds like other than that went really good. Learning day at the high school, heard great things about that. Uh last week we had the Junk School of Dance come out and put on a performance and that was they always do a great job. Um, I thought I'd mention this just because it was a pretty neat thing. So, in the fifth grade, they're doing these things called passion projects and these kids just did a little presentation on what they were passionate about. Um, we had one little guy, he was passionate about Olive Garden. Loves Olive Garden.
Like, I mean, that is that's his that's his and so Miss Presley in some way, shape, or form got a hold of the manager at the office and told her told him about it. Uhhuh. When this kid gave a presentation, Bald Burton showed up uh catered uh gave him like a chef's coat, right? >> Hat, sweatpants, the Solid Garden. >> So, that was kind of a neat thing that I thought I would share because that was pretty cool. Uh and the other projects have been neat. Also, they got another thing coming up here in fifth grade where they're doing a like wax museum or something like that where kids are gonna dress up like historical figures. I guess they're going to have like a red button on their hand. People come up and push the
push the button and then they give historical facts. So, um kind of some cool >> cool things going on there. Um, state testing, science finish, ELA for fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade is a finish. Third, fourth grade start today. Math got eighth grade going. Uh, spring benchmark testing starts today. K5 has a cadence middle school doing easy CBM. Uh, May's crazy. Lots of field trips. Got the jogathon on Thursday. Field day on the 5th. We're going to kind of change how that looks a little bit. It's going to be more like festival type style this year. uh eighth grade promotion is right after the next board meeting. So I don't know if I'll be at the board meeting uh track and field district meets today. Be curious to see how those kids how those
kids did. Um as far as we were talking about classified um I've met with quite a few of them done their kind of endear meetings and those are going really well. Um K5 so you guys mentioned PD earlier. So, um, for K5, we did a science of reading training on Friday. Um, and it was tough to squeeze in. I think it was supposed to be like a eight two-hour sessions and we squeezed in the first session in like an hour and a half. Um, we're going to keep trying to do it. Um, but it is pretty it's pretty tight. So, uh, we had the first one on Friday, we got the next one coming up on the 22nd. Uh and that's kind of just laying the foundation of how human beings, how kids learn to
read and how their brains work. And then once we kind of learn that process, then we can uh begin to build better literacy with our kids. Um yeah, sixth or eighth grade, we talked about essential skill development. Yeah. And just kind of getting ready for the end of the year. Graduation will be here. Well, promotion will be here before we know it. and uh be off the summer. But yeah, it's getting a little wild in May, but other than that, things are going really well, really smooth, got a great staff, got a lot of great kids. And >> in the past, um Richard, we've had one of the board members hand out motions to us. So if you'd like someone sure we get a volunteer or something >> someone who's page >> but but I
I didn't know how you're gonna do it this year. So >> I know what you guys done fast. I was over here like I think the co-chair did the middle school and the chair did high school. So >> that's how we've done it in the past. >> Do you have time at evening or not? >> You have board meeting? >> We do. What time's the promotion? >> Unless she really enjoying watching my son. >> Well, if for some reason it doesn't work out, just reach out to the group and >> yeah, >> potentially. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Thanks, sir. Um, Mr. Cisneros. >> Yeah. on the graduation side of things. That's always the the the light in the tunnel for a lot of kids, but it's a it's a quite the production. So, um
I think our kids are ready for it and they're doing a really good job this spring so far. You know, our our seniors will be missed and every year it's a new wave, but um a lot of things that we're we're trying to add. Well, the not so fun stuff. I guess smart balance testing is coming up next week. kind of one of those things that we know it's always there and we try to put it towards the end of the year without getting too far in. So kids are prepared, teachers are prepared um as they'll be um it's been shortened a little bit over the years. So we set aside a week but it's usually done in about a period there or two per subject. So um yeah, science, math and and writing English.
Let's see. Um forecasting of course is coming up. So try to get the we'll be down the grade school uh probably in a couple weeks to see what classes they're interested in. Same thing at the high school kind of a fun time because sometimes we get chemistry and physics and other times we get marine biology and astronomy and we try to I think for our small school we offer a lot of variety even though um you know we're limited in some ways but not in others. Um couple of things we um we're using a lot of grant money uh high school success funds to try to get kids to some external exposure to things. Um, for instance, uh, just had some a group go to, um, the healthcare career fair day for the first time
in Lebanon to see their kind of LBCC's healthcare campus. And hopefully we can build that. Dino Days is coming up, trying to get some of our non-traditional classroom kids over to that facility and see that there is training and education out there that's really geared towards them. >> What is that? >> Dino Days. It's kind of like diesel mechanics, you know, and then you can put your car or your truck on the the dyno and you can see how many I think horsepower pumps out. So yeah, so the the yeah mechanically inclined really enjoy it. But >> um some other things that we some groups have done took a group to Hatfield Marine Science. So they're not just field trips. So if you look at you know some of the bills it is grant funded
but they actually are hands-on learning type opportunities. Um, I guess they even got to dissect fish while they were over there. And one group got a fish that was inside of a fish and they thought that was fantastic. And then we had a group went out to the OSU radiology um, uh, part last week as well, too. So, a lot of lot of science powered STEM STEM projects. Um, one thing to mention, we we'll have an assembly on May 22nd. Um, there's a group coming in. I think they're doing districtwide brand new flags with meeting the code fire retardant um treated. They're going to go into every classroom. You know, it's based on I think it's Oregon state law or federal law about size. They said it's the appropriate size for the room. Um they're
donating all the installation, all the flags and everything. Even the one in the gym, they said they would replace and we would just have to put it up if it was in bad shape. So, um, they're going to come in the 21st after school and then on the 22nd we'll have an assembly and a few people speak and we do have one of our staff members is a veteran. So, I believe he's going to step in say something as well too about the importance of the flag and we'll just some of those pieces. So, kind of a nice nice thing. >> We're doing that too close as they uh they're giving us they're putting flag in the gym for us too. So, we don't have one in the gym. Thanks. >> And they replaced the
flag out front for us as well. >> Yeah. Get one in every classroom. >> Yeah. But they're making sure that they're in the right positions. I guess they're supposed to be in a certain place in the room and have all those >> and they're even So I guess so Miss Auto. >> Yes. Um, she left the flag in room well >> modular, >> one of the modules, but it's like, you know, I think it's a old like custom stitched >> really really nice material flag. They even offered to frame that. >> And give that back to her. >> Oh, awesome. >> Cool deal. >> Yeah. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. Good.
