We'll move our meeting back to open session. Just so everyone's aware, the meeting is being recorded. It'll be available on YouTube if someone wants to find it. Uh minutes, did anyone see anything with the minutes? Second. Okay. Both meetings? Yes. Thank you, guys. Move to the consent agenda. We have a couple additions to our um agenda here this evening. Um the communication section, A and B, we have a couple thank you letters um to be added. And then, new business, um E, um appoint a board vice chair. Stuck it in there. Um bills, did anyone see anything in the bills they wanted to discuss? I have a few things on my I have a question. I am on page It was just more of an informational for me. I am on page 11. Um the
building cleaning of the apartments administration, I guess it's related to the main And that's an annual thing? More than annual, it's I think it's semi-annual. We actually get reimbursed by food services for those, but it's it's just kind of a whole system. You get them sections and you get reimbursed. Same page, right below that, the $399 freezer fix. I just curious what they found there. Do you know? I don't remember. We talked about it. The The two The fridge and the freezer that are in the high school kitchen are both we're guessing 30 years old. Um and so we've had nothing but problems with them. The problem that they were running into is uh we could look at buying new, but when the problem happens, we can't we don't have We have to have a
freezer right now. So, uh Clays has been called several times. They're good industrial freezers and fridges, but old. So, I think they're okay at the moment. Okay. Um my next question or I guess it's more of an observation. Back on page seven, it's interesting the grade school water and sewer is one bill bill um of 482, and then the high school we have three separate bills, obviously three different lines, but it comes to 433. The only thing I can come up with is maybe the showers over in the why it's so close with half the kids. Anyway. I thought was interesting. Um answer that one. I'm going to play the seraph advocate on this one just because I'm not very up on it. Um your first page that is the general fund statement on revenues,
um I see it I believe it shows that we're running over. Is that just cuz it's time for an adjustment? You know, we have to do those from time to time. Now, where are you thinking we're running over? Uh just cuz it's in parentheses at the bottom, and I believe that Oh, I think our uh ending fund balance was larger than it's been before. The earning fund balance was larger than the budget number, is that what you're thinking? I'm looking at the 461 and 19 at the very bottom. Those are revenues. That's money coming in. Okay, so that's over what we expect. Perfect. >> Well, so anything that's in parentheses, that's still what we're what's coming in. Yep. So there's still money coming in. I mean we're we're we're in a good position right now.
Um the time of the money that it come in like our we're at 99% on our local taxes, which is pretty typical for this time of the year, and then 82 on the state school fund, and those are our big um sources of revenue that we should be really watching closely at this point in time. But the other ones are all relatively small. Excellent. I just want to point out cuz I am not really up on it. Sarah's not here to do that. The only other thing I wanted to point out for me is the kilowatt analysis on both buildings or both campuses are lower than years past, so that means our improvements are doing good. Plus we maybe haven't had weather either. It's good even though the power expense is up, but uh the
usage is down. Anyone else with bills? Uh the next thing is approve softball volunteer coach, Carrie Holman. I'll be abstaining from this part of the vote. Um I know she has been with this particular group of girls cuz she's with Junior Dragons, so since they were little, so she felt like she wanted to continue with them. I'll call you back in 30 seconds. I'll see you then. Those in favor? I. Uh communications. See, we have a letter to Mike and Sarah McCarroll. And then a letter to Sonia Luke, would you like to speak Jim at all about what they gave us and I think you're right. I'll stand over here so I can hear you better. But um so Sonia Luke has donated her um laser printer slash cutter. It is a large version. Um
I had at one time looked at having the engineering class laser cut their own rulers for measurement. I thought that'd be cool. And then I went to price the laser cutters and then then then I was not doing that. And then so then she stepped up and offered her um whole unit. Um in 2016 it cost her $16,000. It's a large unit capable of cutting slate, wood, leather, fabric, steel, stainless, what have you. It can't do plastics because of the fumes that it produces are dangerous. Anyhow, so um I'm very thankful for her um donating that. Uh she valued it at $6,000. Um so it's nice piece of equipment and I will be familiarizing myself with that this summer. Um and going to make tools. Um I want to use it as supplementary projects in
welding and woods and engineering. Uh that's Sonia Luke. Um Uh McCarroll donated They called up and said, "Hey, do you need anything for your finish your your um your shed?" And I said, "Yeah, we need two sheets of OSB." And uh and his son um and um said that we could really use another ladder. So they did donate a new ladder, or not a new ladder, another ladder and two sheets of OSB. Thank you very much. Wonderful. That's all great things to have. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Uh next section will be uh delegations and presentations. Um Meet the teachers our first item. Are you here for that? >> No, ma'am. Yeah. >> Okay. All right. So, I'll stand over here so I can hear you better. You know, there's a lot going on actually.
Um I'm in the middle of updating the career technical education program uh due on April 30th. And so, through the through the gamut of research and that I have to do I'm looking at getting ourselves getting um involved with SkillsUSA. Um there will be some welding competitions and uh some leadership opportunities for the students. Um I started with OWL. Um it's Oregon Welding League. This year, though we didn't go, uh plan to step up that. And that's basically um also a welding um competition. Um usually hosted at various high schools. So, we give the kids some opportunities to read plans and and work under pressure and put things together. Um Let's see. So, I'm also looking at I haven't gotten hold of them yet, but um uh uh something pneumatics uh in Eugene. They actually
hired a couple of our students um in the past. They have basically oh, I guess you would call it dust collection systems all over the United States. They go around. And anyway, so um looking at putting them or asking them to be on our advisory panel to help us keep in tune with what's common in industry right now. Uh where we where we should go what we should what we should look at. Um Let's see. I'm I'm sure there's some other things. I'm not sure. Uh but anyway, so uh we are working on a construction. First year doing that, and I've learned a lot from that course and how we should progress with moving forward on that to make it more efficient. Uh I don't know if we're going to finish our two units this
year. Uh so, less videos, more hands-on work. Um and that's really about it. Okay. Thank you. I I have Thank you. I have introduced uh an engineering class um CAD um programming. Mhm. So, that at least I'm not getting a lot of students into the program itself. So, I thought, well, maybe I'll force feed them. And so, they're getting a taste of of what that class is about. Okay. I'll I'll end there. If anybody has any questions. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Peace out. Good night. Good night. Let's see. Uh next thing is student of the month. Uh my first one for February would be Owen Roberts. I believe he's here. Next one is uh Wyatt Willette for March. Wyatt? Will you come on up here, buddy?
That's Wyatt. Congratulations. And finally. We'd like to present you with this. Um thanks for being our student of the month, and there's a gift card for Benny's. So, hopefully you and your family can go and enjoy it. Thank you. And thanks for all you do for the school and athletics. >> Yes, sir. Thank you. You're welcome. Feel free if you guys don't want to stay for the whole meeting. You're welcome to leave if you'd like. Okay, thank you. Good night, guys. Thank you. Thank you. This one. Thank you. Peace out, buddy. >> Uh construction update building inspection committee report. Uh no big updates. The they're doing some sizable all investigations. Planning phase at this point times. Uh they're going to be here this Friday or they were here this Saturday. And two hour no real
updates. Is everything kind of just like at the school in general kind of holding together? As far as heating now I think so. We haven't we haven't had to call Hvac for a while. Kitchens have both given us headaches but trying to think what's popped up. It's been mostly Kitchen stuff, yeah. Good time of year for the Hvac. They're not they're not working too hard. Good. Okay. Um enrollment and attendance. Um Okay. Down a little bit. I was cruising through this earlier just kind of doing the math. It's amazing how it up and downs month to month. Uh but in general at the moment we're down 10 from last year. And the 13 from the beginning. So we'll keep doing everything we can to hang on to that. Um administrative updates. We'll start with Mr.
Fielder. We'll work our way up. Yeah, I um I mean I don't feel like I have a whole lot to share. And things for things are running really smooth. Um anything I write down that never that never goes through. But things have been running really smooth. Think that you know plan around schools really good. I think conferences went really well. Um got a lot of good feedback from uh the middle school uh doing it a little bit more like the high school does it, where it's, you know, kind of like this, uh where they can talk to teachers at once as opposed to just their homeroom teacher. So, I got a lot of good feedback on that. Um we got state testing coming up here pretty soon. Um and we're kind of gearing up for
that, but yeah, and things are going great. Teachers are doing a good job. Popping in on uh classes. Did Did some today. I really like how creative they are, um especially in those younger grades where they're learning and moving at the same time, the old learn-by-doing process, and so, my teachers are doing really really good jobs. That's all I got. Excellent. >> Thank you, Brian. Thank you. Mr. Cisneros? Uh yeah, we have a few more things going on. I think um kind of small populations, but um just finished up our first round of senior project presentations last week, this one was Friday. It's always kind of a nice time of year where you get to see them like they they grow up a little bit, you know, they're trying on their future careers and whatnot.
Um it's always kind of a big I think a big sigh of relief for them, because when when they're done with that, they kind of like they know that they're they're close. Uh local scholarships are coming out, kind of the annual um process for them as well, too. It's always nice to see the amount of money the community and the county and those like that provide for our kids for all of this. Pretty impressive. Um couple couple just things coming up. Um our hands-on learning day, this will be our third annual, I believe is what it is, that we bring the 7th and 8th graders up to the high school for about a half day. They kind of choose activities that they like, and we sort them out, and you know, so they might get
to go to the shop class for a little while, um maybe PE, um drama, and there's about six or eight different things. It's It's always kind of a fun time. Um we have a group of kids going to a uh leadership conference here pretty soon on the 24th. Uh, we have a healthcare fair. It's kind of a first time thing deal that LBCC's running, so we're trying to advertise for that. Dino Days as well is another one that we're we're pushing out. So, there's a lot of I think there's a lot of opportunity for kids um, if they want to miss a day of school and go to go to some of these other future career pieces and um, yeah, so it's out there. And then the spring drama's coming up for May 14th through
the 16th through the 1st. Do you want to join in on that? What's the play? I I don't know the play. Yeah, but it's it's a pretty large drama class this semester, so it's a I think they're going to try to put a good one together, I think. Excellent. Thank you. Um, Bill? Do you got anything to add? Yeah. April? Nothing. Okay. Thank you. Um, old business. Uh, reminder March 15th through April 15th is the filing window for annual verified statement. If anyone You guys have done it all? I did. Nice. Everybody's done it? Everyone done? Sounds good. Sounds great. Yeah? Okay, we're good with that. Um, I suppose that that puts us in our discussion over the 26th 27th school calendar {slash} four-day week, I guess that's what we're calling it. See, we have
some survey results here in front of us. Here are some survey results. We did student survey last week. Um, you know, kept it pretty simple, but uh, 60% of the students that responded in 6th through 11th grades, uh, 60% of the kids that uh, responded, which was a pretty large group of respon I don't think it says on there how many, but I think there were 100 30 30 Thank you. 38. And that included fifth graders, by the way. Okay, fifth graders. Thank you. Wonderful. Yeah. Um 60% said very excited or somewhat excited about the change. Another 15% wasn't sure, so a pretty good majority of kids are neutral or or better uh on that front. Uh many of them thought they would learn better. They weren't a big fan of the longer school day,
but uh that's probably a surprise. I'm sure they'd be excited about a few more Fridays off. Uh and then the the staff and and uh parent surveys that I shared before have not had any new responses for two or three weeks on either one of those. I might have had a few staff. Um but staff was very positive about the potential change. Parents were you know, again, talking 60 to 70% um like the idea. Another 20 to 25% thought that it was okay or weren't sure. Um not a lot of feedback on uh on needs like lunches or or things like that. Haven't nailed down a schedule yet. I mean, we've thrown things together trying to to see what it would look like. You know. It would be an extra week before school. It would
be an extra week after school. Uh which may have to happen anyway, given we're Labor Day's at. Uh it does include 10 PD days uh for staff, which is something that I'm excited about the the idea to of of being able to provide that time uh for teachers to do the things that we're being asked to do. Um feel like we've worked out at least on at the surface level the details in terms of classified folks and and how their schedules work out. Um the day would be approximately 30 minutes longer. So, we'd start at 8:00, get done the grade schools get done about 3:30. Uh high school get done about 3:45. Instructional minutes, uh we meet the instructional minutes. So, that's not an issue. Question. Um the biggest positives in your opinion. Uh the
the PD time for staff. I think that they're being asked to do a lot. Uh we've been really diligent about our textbook adoptions, for example, uh which we haven't always been in the past. Uh so, we have relatively new English textbooks. We have relatively pretty new math curriculum in both buildings. Um science is recent. The science is recent. Science science is recent. Social science social studies was last year. When the build or this year? >> This year. Health was last year. So, we just have a lot of new curriculum. And so, there's a lot of work. Uh and I think they're being asked to do a lot of things. So, I think that would be great. Uh plus just the opportunity to have meetings and and do those kind of things on those Fridays where
they're happy to do them after school. It's not going to get rid of all the after school meetings. It's just going to make It's going to give us another window of time to do that. Uh the other thing that I think is very interesting from a a big picture perspective is the ability to more closely align the high school and the grade school schedules so that we can share resources. Right now, we're really unable to do that between the high school and those. Uh we have some ideas on things that we would like to do, uh but you can't do it. And so, uh this would kind of combine those two schedules together. That would be one of the priorities in building the schedule is how do we build a schedule so that people can
maybe uh work in both sites. Uh and take advantage >> like that would help the kids transition from the middle school to the high school a little more smoothly than what maybe we've had? >> I it wouldn't hurt. I mean, if you had some high school teachers going down there to teach some courses, I think that would be a positive. Uh we've had conversations about bringing eighth grade students up here for uh for part of the day, like the end of the day, things like that. Uh again, we haven't nailed any of that down because we really can't do it the way that it sits today. Uh but I think there's opportunities on both sites for for some movement. Uh and see what we can come up with. I would like to ask our two
principals, start with Richard, how do you feel either way? How do I feel either way? Yeah, either way. Um well, I the four-day, like Bill had mentioned, and then the teachers my teachers are pretty, I say, excited about the idea of having all that extra PD time, that extra time for them to learn how to be better teachers, dive into all that curriculum. Uh the example, again, uh I have some teachers that are teaching our Wonders curriculum who have never really been taught how to use it, so they're they're struggling a little bit with that. So, we could have extra time built in there. Um in extra PLC time for our for our K2 group needs to wants to focus on math next year, as well as our 3-5. Uh as far as reading that
big four that I showed you guys earlier this year, uh with the lofty goal of actually having it being ready for next year, but we are again, uh we have more of those opportunities for them to just learn to be better educators, even though I think they're doing a great job. Uh it gives us more opportunity, uh just for their growth, um which would then enhance our education for our kids, too. So, I think overall, it's been positive to go to the to the four-day. And we you mentioned the 30 minutes. and met with the sixth and seventh and eighth grade classes cuz they were they had some questions after the survey. And when I explained to them, you know, well, the kids kids going to high school is going to be a little bit
a little bit of a transition, not too big, but we just said your day is going to be 30 minutes longer and you're going to have Fridays off. And they're like, oh. Yeah, that's that's pretty sweet. See, so you know, that 30-day thing once they put it in that perspective that way, for 30 minutes and they're like, yeah, that's that's pretty sweet. And then again, the eighth graders going to high school, they won't have much of a transition either cuz there's going to be no block. They'll be on that. Seven-day, I mean, their day is before 45 minutes longer, but uh I think overall it's been pretty positive being received from the kids and staff, so I think from a curriculum perspective, too, I think about getting curriculum 25 years ago, you got a new
set of books and new set of workbooks. It was really just two boxes of things. Now you get a new set of books, new set of workbooks, and now you have this huge online component uh that has various pieces in it. And if you're not given some opportunity to train at least a little bit and get into it, I think it's a lot more complex than what old high school curriculum was. Yeah, and I know that key five staff meeting on Friday, and that was a big part of what they talked about. You know, we don't have time to go through this curriculum and so really dive into it and know it and teach it as well as they'd like to. Excellent. So you you feel like it would be fair to say that there
will be less instructional hours, but the quality of the hours that the kids get is going to be better. >> Quality should will improve. Okay. But it's all good. Mr. Susner, what's your thoughts on the subject? Uh yeah, I mean, we we've we've talked about the block schedule, the AB schedule for years. 95-minute class time for some classes a lot. Sometimes it's like they shop and PE those those work out okay, but um where I I see a benefit is having the the organizational system built in where you go to the classes every day and I think there was mentioned in on the survey of some hesitancy, but uh reality I think kids will have less homework because what you don't finish in the class that period, about an hour, would just roll over the
next class and we pick up and and go. I don't think it's going to be homework every day because that's not how we operate now. Um and then and I'd say the biggest transition from grade school to middle school, or sorry, middle school to high school sometimes is the they can keep track of seven classes and then the AB rotation and then I have two to sometimes seven days between an AB day class. So that having the routine schedule I think is a nice piece. Um the Fridays I hadn't I hadn't done tremendously into it, but Fridays are typically an athletic event day. You look at basketball, their first game starts at 3:00, we don't have all the teams. So they're they're they're out half a day anyways on a Friday. Um baseball, softball right
now, double header Fridays, we're out tremendously early. So you're actually going to be missing less class time if you didn't have that Friday Friday school day per se and lengthened it. Um couple other things I think are really interesting to this curriculum. Um Our staff is really interested in offering more college now classes. College now is kind of what um it's articulation with LBCC where the teacher can teach So it's like our our college algebra, writing 121, they can teach the college credit class within the confines of the high school building. Um I think we have about six teachers that said they would love to do it. Science, social studies, all sorts of Um but to do that you have you're taking on another chunk of work to blend in with the classroom. So I
think that's something that we would be looking to try to add to our already offered dual dual classes. So, they're free to kids. They don't have to leave the building. Our teachers can teach them. Nothing spectacular happens there. And then I did put the a bug in the ear of the LBCC but they they have kind of their office hour days on Fridays. Um you know, some other counties do some different things where they they built these pathway programs. So, uh the my CTE person at LBCC says the the trades in particular would be highly interested in letting us bring kids up to there. They can start their programs like welding, mechatronics, um manufacturing, things like that. They they they seem pretty positive that would be an option. Um we've already talked to Harrisburg and
Central Lincoln since they're four-day about trying to join that. So, that's just a potential possibility down the road but in That's what a four-day would help us be able to accomplish. Yeah. Yeah, cuz we we we wouldn't have the Cuz they would be on Fridays. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, cuz the LBCC is similar to their office hours so they don't have as many classes so those professors would be offering these other things and I've heard of some schools doing like uh EMT certifications, you know, trying to just getting them on that pathway to the career side. We do have a and I think it's about athletics. So, you're what what do you think your your athletes are going to get more instructional time on a school year? Is that what you're saying if we go to
four-day? Uh yeah, and they're they miss a lot of Fridays and that that half day. But you still have your Tuesday, you know, kind of Tuesdays and then Thursdays depending on the sport. Mhm. But but I'd say you'd be cutting your lost class time in half. Yeah. I'll say my time at Harrisburg High School, those kids didn't miss a whole lot of school. Right. It's on Fridays. And the other thing I would say too that from a high school perspective over there was the teachers really like seeing kids every day. Mhm. Not every other day. Build a relationship with them. Yeah. And the uh the other thing they liked was a lot of them did like Monday and Wednesday were instructional days. So you got to do the homework thing. Tuesdays and Thursdays were the
work days. So they instruct you on Monday, then Tuesday we're working on it. So I think there's that's a good system that they put in place. Thank you. I was just looking back through my notes. Um I think we've asked most of these questions in the survey as far as you know, does anyone think they're going to need food service? And that is still something we could we could potentially offer, right? I've asked direct. There are programs. It's not as clean and simple as you might think. Oh, oh, I can keep going. I just want to touch on things that were brought up in our last meeting and that way we've addressed everything we can think of. Um longer, you know, year longer or the day longer, obviously we we've talked about that. Um and
then the homework sounds like that maybe isn't even a thing necessarily. So We used to do snack pack back in the day and I know Miss Thorberg and Miss John have taken on National Honor Society. So they've they're trying to revamp that program as well too where they put food together for families and send them home. Yeah, so that's That would be I think that would be something that >> I think it would have to run that way. What I've heard is it can't run through your food service program. >> Cool. Cuz you're not here in person. You don't have to be here in person. You don't have to be here in person. But there are other options for us. >> other options. We do snack pack there in the grade school right now. It's
K through eight grade. We don't want to complain. It's not that big of a deal. Yeah. Pretty cool. Excellent. Hey, those are just the points so I wanted to touch on. So I think um with that part of the conversation we should probably schedule one more I feel like one more meeting to invite everyone and possibly at the end of it make a decision. Have any issues with such a thing? Um calendar How far out do you guys want to go? 2 weeks? Bill, how How long do we have to make a decision? We Yeah, we we need to decide on a doing Yeah, it's it's time to get a schedule together and and uh the negotiations are I'm sure this will be a little at least a little part of it. Right. Maybe next
week? 20th? Or do we need to do it before the negotiations? I don't I don't think it'll be a It's not 16th, right? No, yeah, we need we need people to you know, so we can post it. I'd like to see this calendar, our potential calendar public, you know, potential publicized. We have a draft of our master teaching schedule, too, that I can share. Okay. Jen has been working on I think the more information out there the better. Mhm. You know, the 20th would be good this Monday. I'm good with the 20th. I know Nicole doesn't like 20th or Mondays. Mondays are tough, right? How about later? Thursday? Wednesday was Wednesday about the good >> As long as it's after I can be here by hopefully by 5:15. 5:30 I can probably make it. And
Bill, what's your coach schedule? Yeah. Baseball season's crazy. And always changing, weather dependent. Yeah. Should be Tuesday, Friday. Yeah, yeah, Wednesday's good. 22nd? 22nd. 5:30? 5:30 sounds >> Uh-oh. That's at work? >> Yeah. What's that? 22nd. I agree with that. I don't I'll post it on the website right away. Yep. Yep. That's good. Yeah, we can get as much information as possible about it. Mhm. Did anyone utilize the paper um forms that go into the office that you're aware of? Paper forms? Is there anything in the agenda? Okay. I'm just going to make sure. Okay, um next thing is classified bargaining update. Probably just a space holder, I assume. Just wanted to let you know that there's a meeting with them on the 16th to to open the negotiations. Sarah and Nicole have bravely stepped
Very good. Uh new business, um appointment of budget committee members. Um I persuaded, I mean, gained a person for my area. Um David Dilworth would like to be on our budget committee. Would you like to volunteer? I think it's two. Yep. Yep. Um my zone will be Hannah Watt. Who did you say? Hannah Watt. It's on the back of the Oh, got you. schedule. So, Nicole, I if we can help you I don't know if we can wrangle anybody. Well, I can try. get back in there? >> I can try. Yeah. Sounds good. How much is the mileage? I was carrying a thing and he told me he wanted to be done with that, so work your magic. And our So, our meeting is May 12th, 7:00 in here. So, everyone's aware. We did change
the time on that to 7:00. Yeah, a little later for people that may need it. Um Hillary, is there any budget to provide food or snacks or anything for that? I don't think that'd be a terrible idea for folks that are leaving home to come volunteer for that. Uh I guess Yeah, yeah, I'll just Yeah, if anyone has any suggestions or we can figure it out by then. We'll figure it out by then. Okay. Uh next item is discussion of board vacancy, zone one. So, we've received one applicant um as per the deadline that we set um I think that the timeline is closed, so I guess we're >> somebody today ask about possibly being looking at friends who want to do it and so, it's I don't know if we should open it up
for another month or I had somebody >> Sounds like it's kind of common when you've only had one. Is that why you received a little bit there? >> That's what I heard from one superintendent. Said that that was their tradition. >> somebody that lives in zone? Yeah, that would be liable candidate. They just went on the They weren't on the agenda Oh.
