okay all right please stand for the flags news ready begin i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all i need to start working on my camera placement on that all right agenda approval chairman monahan yes may i add to the agenda yes so we you know we're working on our school-based health center and we just found out that they need to submit an application and a letter of support from the school board we've already provided support through a different letter which was part of the grant and now this is the final piece so can we add that to new business and then add that to action item to add that yeah if
you want i can just add it to my district business and then we could add just the action item 7.2 school-based health center yeah i think that would be fine so we can just add 7.2 if we have a motion on the board make a motion except the agenda is stated with possibility of addition of 7.2 i'll second okay so to clarify not a possibility we would add 7.2 that would be a definite is that a clarification i don't know okay so motion has been made to add 7.2 any discussion okay uh i'll go in order on my screen ryan hi melody all right there you go phil all right kelly hi i okay 7.2 will be that uh health center letter as an action item uh moving on uh we did not have any
visitors to address the board via email that i saw and so we will move to consent agenda so i'll read through the board on an individual basis part of the meeting is reviewed all material all financial reports are available for review by the public in the business office the board considers consent agenda items routine business and will be enacted by the board in one motion there will be no discussion of these items at the time the board votes on the motion unless members of the board staff or public request specific items to be discussed and or removed from the consent agenda it's been moved by melody and seconded by bill he got there first all right i'll go in order of my screen ryan hi melody hi bill hi kelly hi andrea is an i
new business uh asb public relations reports all right hi i am subbing for hannah hayduke tonight she has a track meet um and i was also planning to come and speak with you guys about our updated graduation plans so uh first of all we started off earlier this month with morp uh we typically do a dance right before prom or right around prom morph is the anti-prom uh we couldn't do a dance this year but we kept all of our typical traditions that we usually do with it so we had a jungle themed spirit week and over on the left-hand side you can see some of their uh uh submissions that they did on our instagram page which was really cool we did our morph court which is a ninth through eleventh grade court that
is selected by staff and students here at the school that court raised over three thousand dollars for the columbia food bank which was amazing we did a virtual morph assembly featuring fall sports i should say fall sports which is a very weird thing to be doing in april and uh we also featured our court and then we had a live royalty reveal live stream event that happened on youtube where we crowned our winner our winner was freshman chloe masterdijk she raised 1 225 for the food bank herself which was incredible and in second place behind her with only five dollars like under five dollars to win was uh molly wheeldon she raised two one one thousand two hundred and like twenty dollars so incredible that those two kids uh raised so much money and the
rest of the court filled in the rest and we're very excited to get that checked down to the food bank because we know they need it right now uh our drama department did a radio play what a perfect thing to do in a time like this there's three different versions on youtube if you want to check it out you can contact ron barnett if you don't have the links to it but it was it was pretty awesome they also did a among us game night on zoom for our students to participate in a little bit earlier this month the band program has done a couple of virtual concerts and our jazz band one is coming soon it's in production right now uh both the band and choir are preparing for the osa culminating events which
is a recorded submission process this year since we can't have the live state band or choir championship so we we're working with our students to prepare those recordings and submit those here really soon oh that's going to try to play it don't play it go to the next slide okay there we go uh st helen's leadership yeah we don't i don't think we see your slides oh no okay hold on sorry let's see okay i got it there we go can you see that now yes thank you okay sorry about that okay thank you i haven't been teaching on zoom any lately so i'm out of practice i'll go back and show you all the pretty stuff that we actually just had so hold on one second go back go back go back there we
go there we go here's all the stuff right here so the more spirit week stuff that the kids did they had the cutest little dress up days everything was jungle themed it was really really cool so okay moving forward oh skip skip skip skip skip skip scoop come on okay there we go uh st helens leadership welcomed all of our students back we came in and did our typical september decorating to welcome our kids back but we did it in april it was pretty awesome we had the lion walking around and our leadership kids came in early to make sure that anybody coming off the buses knew exactly what entrance to go into and how things were going to work for the day they did a great job staff appreciation we typically do a big
week for all of our high school staff in usually march or april we delayed it for the reopening this year our teachers walked back into little individual succulent plants balloons and handmade cards and then on monday super joe's coffee came and we got coffee for the entire staff anybody that wanted to order it we are also working don't tell anybody but we're working on including some thank you videos for our staff in the next virtual assembly that we are working on tomorrow night is becoming a lion night very excited to welcome our eighth graders and give them and their families as much information as we can possibly give them about next year it is on zoom we're going to do a main presentation with uh saint helens administration and counselors and athletics and activities and
then they're going to be able to go to virtual booths with our clubs activities elective programs anybody that would typically be here for our live event they'll get to visit currently happening at the middle school i know that they're showing some elective videos that we created a couple years ago to help the students figure out what they're going to forecast for and we're really happy that more programs have have submitted videos for that counselors are going to be visiting soon and forecasting is going to happen also i'm working with with chris and mark to try to figure out some sort of a becoming a lion day event hopefully before school gets out to maybe get the eighth graders over here in the building somehow we just don't know yet but but we're doing everything we
can um and we'll try as hard as we can to to give them the best experience no matter what though our lion crew is on deck and ready to go in september to welcome those freshmen when they come in friday we are wrapping up our t-shirt sale so if you're following us on social media you've probably seen us pump this out a couple of times but we're selling these really cool t-shirts as an asb fundraiser the treasurers of each class and asb are required to do a fundraiser as a part of our bylaws so this is their fundraiser that they're going to be doing this year together we've lost a lot of revenue because we haven't had dances that's the biggest thing that asb does as fundraisers so we've dipped into our savings this year
luckily we had that to be able to do it but um this this is a fundraiser to help pull us out of that and we're really hopeful that we can have those dances again next year and keep going but orders close on friday uh if you don't have a link to this and just want to email me i can i can send you the link as well uh coming up soon as prom we have uh our prom court's gonna be announced soon and then we're doing all the typical stuff we typically do with prom other than the dance commons decorations spirit week assembly and a royalty reveal that we are gonna do live planning on doing it at the basketball game on may 21st we'll see how that goes uh we're we're still hopeful for
that and then on to the graduation thing i know that we've got some senior parents that uh came to you guys and and expressed the interest in doing a live event and uh we talked to scott about some stuff and and i think we've come up with a really great plan uh so our our finals week still looks the same as what we were planning on doing uh senior finals on monday and tuesday we have a cap and gown blood drive at the columbia foursquare church on tuesday uh we tried to move it to wednesday when we opened back up in person but we were unable to move it but it's a community blood drive so it's going to be okay then wednesday night we have the senior and community crews 8 to 10 p.m
the second annual very excited about this event uh and keeping it in the future for for us because we had a really fun time doing it last year thursday is our drive through and senior barbecue and pickup event this is the event where the seniors come through and they pick up all their cords and awards and and all the stuff that they would wear at graduation along with really vital information for the next day's graduation ceremony and then a new event we're adding and i'm going to go into a little bit more detail with it is a senior celebration it's a live event at the stadium that's going to happen on thursday night 6 30 p.m for all of the seniors and um unfortunately though since we've made this plan we've now gone back into
extreme risk so we have to think about those different things so um our plan at this point is if we're in extreme risk we can only have presenters there and we will live stream the event for everybody to get to see it if we're in high risk we can have presenters and seniors maybe a ticket or two depending on where we're at and then moderate risk we can have between two and four tickets for our seniors to have spectators come to this live event that we're doing and then friday is our graduation ceremony downtown at the courthouse so um to talk about the senior celebration this is a mix of all of our annual events that are not happening in person so senior assembly academic awards assembly and the speeches that typically happen at a
regular graduation all of these were done via video last year so we're going to be doing them at this event instead so we'll have the typical processional bringing the marching the students in to have a seat uh and watch and then all of your your senior student speakers that typically speak at those things like looking back speeches salutatorians valedictorians et cetera staff recognitions and retirements senior awards and scholarships closing remarks from dr wagner and a recessional and then what we're planning on doing is an optional stage walk for any of the students who want to do that because we heard it was very important that the students that wanted to walk across the stage on the field like a typical graduation year would get that opportunity so but we also know that we have students
that don't want that opportunity right they're they're going to be they're going to be at the friday ceremony that's good enough for them um but we wanted to provide this opportunity for anybody who wanted it so we'll restage those seniors to come back in and walk across the stage if we can have parents down we'll let them come up and take pictures of their kids walking across the stage if we can't we'll figure out how to live stream it and take pictures as well so that we can post those later for for everybody but we feel like this is a really good kind of coded safe compromise um to to provide something special for our seniors and hopefully get them all in the same space so um and we also we need to know if
the school board wants to attend that uh thursday evening event because we are working on our program right now so if you guys want to attend we'd love to have you i i'm not sure if i can speak for the entire board but for myself i would like to be there noel as a superintendent however if me being there means a parent can't show up then i would prefer to give my spot to a parent okay okay yeah i think i'm kind of in the same boat whereas whatever we can do to kind of normalize it if possible but if it starts to infringe on um having parents or family there then i think that that would not be a space i should be at okay i think the biggest ask was for those students
actually to be able to cheer on their peers and see their peers walk across and have that celebratory moment themselves um yeah i think parents should definitely be there before us but we would love to enjoy awesome okay and that's all i have for tonight guys thank you so much thank you how to stop sharing there we go okay all right scott so that was um i believe the high school so it's ted's turn we're at 5.3 athletic guidance there's been some recent changes so ted you've got a lot of updating to do i think yes good evening and i'm sure i will uh have continual updates in the next week or two but as of now i'll tell you what we know um so indoor full-contact sports have been approved by the state which
means um basketball and wrestling can now proceed um it was up until you know earlier this week that basketball and wrestling were finally approved um but the caveat to that is we still have to follow um occupancy guidelines put out by the wrist level guidance so that could get tricky now so we're we're monitoring that um we i we didn't have to submit um opt-in form to ode which we completed we did the same form for football back in february so we have completed that and that can be viewed on our athletic website through the school that's through the high school and so we're ready to go there now we just need the uh risk levels to cooperate our plan is that basketball wrestling swimming will start their first practice may 10th and then they
would have a week of practices and then they go right into five weeks of competitions through through june so may 18th would be the first basketball first week of basketball games wrestling and and swim meets uh our problem right now is moving back into extreme risk the guidance lays out that even though these sports are allowed indoor occupancy is limited to six personnel plus um a coach so that that makes it difficult for for any sport that matter um outdoor is restricted as well we're running into some issues you know next week in extreme risks we can only have 50 50 people on the field and track and we're supposed to host a track meet on wednesday so we're we're kind of waiting for guidance from osa i know they were meeting today um and
then possibly further guidance from the governor on this i know that for football it came right up to a few days before footballs begin and they they increase the capacity limits for this sport so we're just kind of in a wait and see mode and hoping that we can get out of this extreme risk before the 10th and then we'll we'll move forward any questions now i just want to say thank you i know it's been a difficult time and uh trying to work through all those uh things that shift rather suddenly and unexpectedly uh so i really appreciate the work you're putting in thank you thank you it's just it's i think it's tougher on the kids because you know you're gonna have a season and oh now you might not and i think
you know if we can just get get something solidified for them i think it'll make them feel better so that's that was that's my only concern is i just feel bad for the kids that are in limbo right now um have any of you guys discussed at all possibly even putting it in the newspaper even about to parents also is that the amount of things that we actually have at risk right now of not occurring if we don't all work hard together as a community and trying to get through so we can have graduation and our sports and try to keep our kids in class and what this all could change overnight if people don't understand they've got to do it i just think that some people are not even realizing that there's people last
weekend that didn't understand that we were even into high risk let alone going into extreme so so the words not getting out there even just the everyday stuff let alone from us personally as a district um and then the other thing you want to know right along with that is can a district put in that if our numbers for example were lower but other parts of our county were not that our district could still be allowed to do events that maybe you know our next door neighbors on both sides anybody couldn't do because the numbers were actually coming from their community and not ours are we all lucked into the county thing no matter what for events and activities we're locked into the county piece um but for for school and instruction we we have
more latitude to to do what we feel might be best for our district well anyway i just thought we need to really have a heartfelt letter go out from us saying that we are at a risk every single day for every single thing to come to stop everybody's got to work right or not to get us through this so we can finish the school year out the best we can melody i'd be happy to put together a letter um and maybe see if i can get a letter to the editor we've we've put things out before but i think a big push now would be important um so i'm happy to do that if the board would like to sign on to us a letter together that might might be something too to push out
so i'll put something together and run it by you guys to see what you think can we look at giving it to both newspapers even though we only have the one on record because we all know lots of the community reads one and loves me with the others to cater that to the most people yep we can do that melody you might turn off your video because you're you're slowing down with your zooming i noticed ted was struggling too okay so we're all having a rough evening here now you sound okay anything else on that or are we moving to school updates i think we're ready for school updates all right should we go ahead and start with uh elementary and early learning sure all right are you able to see that yes awesome all
right i am lisa tyler and i'm the principal at mcbride and as you can see our attendance numbers um we're excited to hold steady on our not chronically absent we're at 75 percent this month to date and we have been working really hard as a staffed with working with families and our overall present percentage is 93 so we're we're excited because we see fruit from the efforts that we have made we talk about attendance all-stars and calling out kids who have improved and are attending both synchronous and asynchronous days and we announce those all-stars every monday on my morning announcements we have incentives for kids and i think the the one uh strategy that has really made a difference is that working with families and finding how we can support them to have their attend
be kids be attending and our social emotional team has done an incredible job partnering with teachers um figuring out who they could visit and having home visits and um as we i showed a few months ago they put hearts on doors for kids who have been in attendance and really just highlighting kids who are attending and and working on partnering with families to get support where they're needed and we've had an amazing start back at school i i've just been incredibly impressed and um proud to be a part of the mcbride staff and in opening and reopening the building and providing hybrid learning and we really have an attitude at mcbride just to meeting the students where they are right now and so that's really what we've been working on both academically and behaviorally and
social emotionally and with family dynamics and the last thing is mcbride has a few openings um for positions next year and i attended the job fair earlier this month and met several potential candidates and i'm excited to be able to work on getting the best at mcbride okay dustin hi everyone i'm dustin salisbury principal at lewis and clark so reporting on our attendance um are not chronically absent students so those are the students that have not missed more than 10 percent of their school year and we were going along pretty steadily until we hit march and april some of you know we had quite a few students that needed the quarantine and evidently when they were quarantining they did not log in so they didn't attend uh virtually either so we're really struggling with our
students who are not in the building on their asynchronous days they are just not logging in as much as we would like so we're really focusing on attendance incentives and weekly announcements for parents and then weekly announcements on monday and tuesdays for the kids announcing the the top attendance classes for each side of the building and then any other classes in the building that have good attendance that week [Music] all right lewis and clark happenings everyone like lisa said everyone is really happy to be back in the building things are going great kids love it and all the staff love it it is so nice to have kids back in the building our pto is doing currently a penny wars or donation wars fundraiser and so if you're interested in helping out and having a
little fundraising competition you can go on our website and find that and also the lewis and clark pto facebook page has information teacher appreciation week is next week and i can't share the details but we have some fun things planned for our teachers now when i say teachers we recommend and agree that all staff in the building are teachers because we are all teaching students great things throughout the year so we um we recognize all of them so thank you to all our teachers especially next week but all the way through the year something really exciting at lewis and clark is our osu school garden project it's between our cafeteria and the portables on the clark side of the playground the clark wing we've had students planting vegetables last week and a little bit this
week and you know we have a lot of deer that come around lewis and clark so if we can keep the deer from eating all the onions and lettuce and strawberry plants we will be doing really great so we have some netting and stuff but every now and then i check the cameras at night to see if the deer are getting into the the garden boxes so anyway that's how lewis and clark's going good evening jennifer vandescher columbia city elementary i'll keep it kind of quick what they said our families and our kids and our staff are thrilled to be back in the building and working together i think that our attendance would be pretty close to 100 on those hybrid days i still have students that have trouble accessing due to internet or um
you know families that are working but there's been a significant improvement since we've returned um in terms of happening that escape from mr lemoncello's library we're doing something called one school one book i'm hannah hintz our title and librarian teacher is doing one school one book and it um we're just dipping a toe into it really one school one book is like a giant book club for the entire school and it's a way to get families engaged and get our whole community engaged in reading talking about books in a perfect world we'd be able to have activities where families could come in and do things with it but we are enjoying having many guest readers come and read so that if children are not able to read the book independently they can listen to it
read by someone so that is one of our happenings and we're continuing our work with el education um we're focusing on character and crew and um tomorrow we're going to be working out not tomorrow friday sorry friday we're going to be working on operationalizing character as in having it um creating rubrics and having more concrete ways for students to understand what it means to show integrity and have ways to take reflect on their own growth in these character areas and set goals for themselves so we're pretty excited about that good evening i'm martin barnett director for early learning and well as you can see by the picture lots of fun happenings in early learning we've um just had our butterflies emerge so um it's been a very fun week of butterflies um our attendance is
reported slightly differently so um you can see the class attendance there divided out by psp is preschool promise students and the other are private pay and and we have much of the same struggle in person we'd probably be at nearly 100 attendance but it's those asynchronous days that um students struggle with but we're working with families to find ways to share with us what they're doing with their children because we know there's lots of good learning happening so it's just working with families to capture that learning and share it with our staff our teachers so that we can um kind of check off the the development that's taking place in that learning and um we have really exciting news in our program and we applied for a grant with scapu's school district and to the
children's institute and they call it early school success and we will be working on alignment across our two districts and then also from early learning up through third grade to align strategies and approaches and bring some really high quality professional development to our district to work together to make that transition into school really smooth and then the transition between grade levels as well so we're really excited to get started on that work and we also um have our new preschool promise interest form has opened up for next school year so we can start and it's on the district website start directing families there to apply for preschool promise lots we're also starting a six-week parent education program with a grant from the northwest early learning hub we'll be able to engage up to 50 families
in um a really nice program we've been using for a couple of years for parent education it's called ready for kindergarten from the reading foundation and so families get awesome kits of materials and um and then there's an online self-paced module that they can do and we'll also hold live parent meetings we use zoom to give support and share ideas and try to build some community for incoming kindergarten families okay looks like we're ready for our middle school report mr william good evening school board community members i'm chris william principal st helens middle school and i will stick with our traditional presentation of sharing our riverhawk school report in the format of uh two successes and one thing we're working on here we go uh the first success is related to how we're starting school
in the mornings in our our uh arrival and uh what we call a slow start uh we have a social emotional learning focus on our slow start at the middle school uh so when students first arrive no longer do they pile into one hallway and into their lockers and uh in fact instead they uh separate themselves into three grade level entries uh different parts of the building uh what we've noticed from this is it's had a dramatic uh improvement on the level of noise chaos and negative interactions that happen in the morning between students um and so it's been it's been pretty awesome um and so we're taking some elements of what we're doing here in hybrid uh and considering how we can implement these in the future uh when we're not in hybrid instruction
to better improve uh the social emotional environment for our students um in addition we're playing music on the entry we have a mind matters curriculum that's been nicely organized into a teacher friendly presentation this curriculum focuses on social emotional learning for the students during our focus class which is our kind of our beginning of the day student organization and social emotional learning time and our intervention specialist meredith reading has done a fabulous job every week on friday she prepares our teachers for how to present this material to the students and then the teachers are presenting it and teaching it and the students are interacting and participating um in these lessons these social emotional learning lessons every morning when they begin their school day we also have some breaks in there um and i'll talk a
little bit about uh movement breaks here in them in our next uh slide or in a slide here in a moment uh our second success though that i do want to highlight a little further is the mind matters curriculum itself you can see here some of the sample lessons but uh these have been uh so far as i've visited classrooms in the morning every one of our teachers are presenting these lessons and our students are just really learning self-regulation strategies self-souvenir strategies they're learning things about themselves how to monitor their bodies how to keep themselves healthy how to interact socially with others and stressful moments all kinds of great techniques strategies videos things that they're engaging with and it's been very helpful in helping or improving the way our students kind of reintegrate to school
especially in the hybrid format what we're working on is logistics timing and student movement we have become pretty efficient our arrival was was pretty slow and clunky to start but now we've become quite efficient so we have this excess time where we feel like we need to shift because in our school day currently the way we're structured we're we're struggling to offer enough movement time for our students so we're going to be shifting some of that slow start time that we've gotten good with to our actual student recreation time or physical movement time and that's been going pretty well typically at the middle school or in the past this is another area where the hybrid model has has changed our practice and helped us uh open our eyes to other methods um so in this
play in this recreation time the way we structure it now students have options to choose structured activities led by pe teachers um as well as uh choose kind of a recreation or free choice time and they separate themselves out pretty well uh into uh groups that uh transition back and forth sometimes between structured activity and and rec time um but it is really toned down the number of negative interactions social conflicts and just um unstructured time that students are experiencing during that recreation period so it's been really positive and healthy for the kids and then some of the other things we're working on is how to exit and departure safely it's we have uh kind of taught our students how to uh do more of an elementary model of entry and and exit and it's
tough to adjust to i think for the older kids at first um but it really uh has had some some good benefits in terms of their types of interactions that they have with each other and then trying to maximize supervision at times when teachers are transitioning between classrooms and i want to give a lot of credit to our teachers who are now all mobile teachers they're on carts moving from classroom to classroom uh in in a a section of the school and so that's been um an adventure for them and it's something that we're really trying to give them tools and resources to help make it more efficient as well as extra supervision when they do so those are the successes and things we're working on at the middle school and that's our report excellent
thank you chris how about uh how about katie from the high school great good evening uh chris are you still sharing your screen i'm trying to shut it off here i've shifted it over to my second screen sorry hold on no worries well i can go ahead and start i'm going to keep mine short and sweet because you're going to hear a lot about the high school tonight um both with athletics and activities and then also our development of the new high school so a celebration our first week of school we started off with a over a 90 percent attendance rate for our hybrid students so we had a really smooth transition in getting students set up with our cleared for school app which has been really successful in having our students and our staff
screen at home i really think that that has played a huge role in doing that screening so that only those who are not exhibiting symptoms or who have not been exposed or coming to school and keeping everyone safe and have allowed us to work with those families and answer questions and it's also made for a really fast screening process so something that we thought was going to take a long time to get everyone into the building is really quick in all of our different entry points it also has our staff set up in lots of different places in our building welcoming every single student as they come into the building offering them food greeting them with a warm smile and a welcome and making sure that everyone has what they need to start their day
so it's a it's a fantastic way to start our morning we have had a lot of positive feedback and students have been really receptive about the changes that we've had to make for health protocols but we also had our teaching and learning team working together to make some of those school-wide classroom management shifts such as cell phones are either off and away or they're in a cell phone charging station on the wall that can be monitored so there's no more cell phones that are sitting at desks or random texting that's happening and other distractions so that has been a school-wide culture shift that has actually been really successful same kind of thing with eating or drinking in the classroom we've made that available during enrichment but it has not become an issue during lunch with
custodians having to clean up all in different parts of the building or in classrooms so that has also really helped shift some of that culture and helping um our entire community kind of wrap around each other and recognizing just all of the hard work that goes into keeping our school um clean and also we've got a lot of surplusing to do and there's lots of boxes getting packed up and so there's lots of people that are doing two and three jobs so um i've been very appreciative for that a couple of the the reminders and something that we continue to work on is when we do have lunch in both the commons in the cafeteria sometimes students will forget to put their mask back on after they're actively eating and what's great is that i
can just make a quick announcement to that space and just give them a quick reminder and suddenly all the masks come right back up um and so again we we all recognize the importance of keeping each other um healthy and and our role in our larger community one of the things that um has also shifted is that all of our teachers are engaging in the three sel strategies that are recommended by castle which are a warm welcome engaging strategies in the classroom and then an optimistic closure and so we've really been honing into those three different areas in every single classroom the warm welcome could be a teacher running a community circle it could be the teacher greeting at the door by name with a warm smile there's lots of different ways that teachers can
feel comfortable in doing that some of our teachers have used some humor so in one metals classroom rather than getting rid of some desks she put little markers on the desk that you're not supposed to sit at so that we have physical distancing and it's a picture of obi-wan kenobi who is saying this is not the seat you were looking for move along so there's a little bit of humor that is kind of sprinkled throughout the building we also have our spanish classroom that in the at the very beginning of the day it has the reminders up on the wall is your phone in its uh charging station have you read through this um this the date in spanish have you submitted your photo to our la comunade la comunaidad board that she has all
the students pictures up on there and then also has a prompt like would you rather have a bunny sized elephant or an elephant-sized bunny to get the students talking at the beginning of class and just starting to engage with each other so again that's another area that we've identified that you know for a long time students have been behind screens which creates a barrier and students have easily been able to turn their screens off or to mute themselves and now we come back into the building and now we have face masks which creates another barrier so it's been really quiet um over the last couple of weeks just the the volume level and so we're still trying to get students to be talking and doing to engage with each other and help them feel comfortable
and and kind of re-acclimate to being in a school building so um you know i think it's been a fantastic start to our school year we've learned a lot being in comprehensive distance learning our teachers are taking that learning and bringing it into our classroom in person now continuing to use some of the amazing technology that they learned about in the classroom that's been really engaging for students so we're really excited about looking forward to next year forecasting is going to start may 10th so the course guide is now up on our website and is in print and we've got a lot of great things to look forward to at the high school thank you katie colleen are you ready for the plymouth report i am okay so um this is our second week third
day we just finished with in third in-house day um our attendance has gone up quite a bit from cdl to in-house we went from 32 percent up to 81 which was a 49 growth so that's pretty exciting we actually have about 10 kids that have been no shows and so we've been working um calling trying to do home visits emailing that kind of thing um they really don't want to do school it appears because now they're not answering our phone calls and um they're nobody's home wake up visit so i think um you know we'll do an occasional call but we'll try and lit up a little bit and then we'll try and um connect with them before the fall and uh so we um we have small cohorts and the beauty of having a
small cohort is your school can pretty much um go to very similar to normal so we have a social distance in the kids you know i took from the military uh that elementary thing where you do this this is six feet about and so so they can keep an eye on that and um and i've i've made it so that they could have lunch together spread out um we had a little bit difficulty at the very beginning where people weren't wearing the mask they weren't um adhering to the guidelines and so it was pretty much said that you know this is special because not everybody in the district is it has this opportunity and if we can't follow the guidelines we'll have to have lunch in class man everybody just settled right up so we
got our mouths on we are distance we are sitting where we're supposed to and it's going really well and so everybody appears to be happy the people that are coming to school are coming to school every day um and so that's that's going really well we are using our cell phone lockers the way we do that and we've taught them that and we've spread them out so that um when someone's getting in their locker you need a social distance and backup why they get into their locker anyway it's been real interesting to watch because a normal life that's not happening it's everybody you know bumping in and trying to edge in there who can get their phone out first um so we are um what we're working on is the testing so um if people
decide they want to test we've been uh working on how to offer that to them and um get our letters out our letters are going out um they went out today and so we can start racking up our um filling our slots for testing and um so that's what we're doing we're excited to be back thank you colleen that wraps up our school-based reports okay thank you so next we move to the introduction of the reap program and mark jackson will provide us with an overview of the um partnership that we've joined here and so before we get into that um i just want to kind of take a moment to acknowledge uh there's been a lot of stuff going on uh a lot of things that uh have led us to focus uh quite
a bit on inclusive and diversity and making sure that we're paying attention to things that we may not have always had first and foremost in our mind so i'm really excited to have a conversation with mark and hear about the re program and the area that we're going to be focusing on as we continue to move forward awesome i guess that's my cue well uh thanks uh i'm not for sure will speak but thanks board chair i want to acknowledge uh scott as well and uh all the board members and district staff and school administrative community my name is mark jacks i am the uh the executive director and co-founder of reap we're based in portland and uh so excited about the opportunity to share with you all this evening a high-level overview in terms
of our partnership work we are looking to really advance as we close out this school year and gear up for fall i think scott's going to help me with my my slideshow um i'll get you going right here so you know we have such an opportunity i think we have something special that we are forming and i just want to appreciate the board vote to really give consent and support to this partnership um and we are thrilled to be one of your old community partners to serve all students to the point earlier in terms of just the changing social climate in our region and so forth with great challenges come to great opportunity and i think that uh this partnership is going to be on the side of opportunity um and we have been in
existence since as a local non-profit organization um so i've i've pretty much worked every tier of leadership within the organization and get the baby off the ground so we're we're thrilled being in our 20th year providing services to the community so we'll go ahead and proceed with the slide deck and this will be my focus of talking points you can go ahead and uh move the uh slide if you could yeah a couple clicks there i believe so the mission the mission of reap is to proactively i want to underscore the word proactive to proactively we'll go back there proactively ignite elevate and engage the next weightable leaders for the future now reap is all about being a proactive provider to students and families and partner to schools and school districts to really center our
work around students realizing that whether we are prepared or likely or not they will own the future so it would be important that we begin to invest in them early on to ensure that their future and our future is is secure and thriving next slide please just to give you all one additional click there just to give you all some context in terms of reaps leadership space in terms of the state landscape reap as organization has direct involvement with just a range of tears of leadership along the lines with the governor's office the education committee both from the house and senate side of the department of education higher education coordinating council called heck of course coaster the coalition school administrators and also the oregon school board association these are in fact authentic partnerships to where
there really is um deep diving dialogues on how to uh reimagine uh public education to be uh equitable for all students uh so this level of perspective uh and audience we're going to bring to bear within the st hillary school district uh so we are not a stranger to the work nor a stranger to the actual system and all those who really lead the system into the future so i want to make sure you all have a context of who you are inviting into your your district you know in terms of the circles that we have place and voice in and we are so thrilled to be a trusted partner uh at the state level uh and to expand our reach into uh the saint helen square is just a great opportunity uh next slide
so in terms of school partnerships in terms of where reek really lands as far as direct service you'll see here we have uh some neighboring districts of course we have tiger tavalton we have beaverton north clackamas uh portland puppet schools david douglas centennial gretchen barlow you know highlighted in purple there um saint helens although that's not your school colors the colors that's reached colors but i want to make sure i share the distinction that we're excited about this new partnership and i i think reaper's in about over 15 different schools from the elementary up into the high school range within these different districts and we're just so excited we touch over a thousand students every year in our school-based programs in our community programs as well next slide so in terms of the partnership with
reit and the saint helen school district you know we have some partnership targets you know part of this whole partnership is to really look at some targeted areas that we envision uh making an impact in of course one being on time promotion to the next level next grade level uh also graduation rates academic achievement uh school attendance i heard someone talk about you know they stopped managing the phone you know as far as the home visits you know we want to make sure we make an impact with school attendance but also uh student discipline from the context of decreasing behavior referrals and exclusionary uh trends you may see in our schools you know we want to really hit these areas to kind of move the dial forward now when reap comes into the actual learning
space reap is present to serve all students and i want to underscore all students although we will be targeting a culture diverse students when we come into an actual learning environment we elevate all students and the school culture and climate and i want to be really clear and up front about that uh because part of of the modern the approach of reap is to create a real world context for students you know that although you may be in a rural area what not and you may have low or increasing diversity the reality is that you know we're we're in a global market a global world with diverse perspectives and experiences and as as much as we can empower and give students context to the actual uh social context they'll be existing in as they grow
as a growing adults all the better so re brings that perspective into the actual school buildings and also classroom spaces so i want to be clear that you all really see the bottom line outcomes we envisioned to really bring in about an impact next slide please god so a little fine printer i apologize i wonder if to get out on one slide but this is the actual uh scope of work that we've outlined in consultation with uh the building principles uh see katie there i thought i saw uh where is he at from the middle school chris yeah you know we have some great uh dialogue um on a series of occasions just to to one introduce reap but also to more let's listen and kind of hear uh some of the actual uh experiences
and trends and where the gaps are we understand the importance of listening to building leadership on the ground level to see what's really working and where's their opportunity for support you know so and then hearing from scott in terms of a district vantage point and we framed this the scope of work around listening you know so it was not something that was prescribed that we brought in and say here's how it's going to go but you know part of being a partner is uh to take time to build trust and to be an active listener to make sure uh there's alignment in the work as we come in to support students and support school coaching climate so what you see here is as a result of some key bullet points to kind of capture some
of the actual uh listening sessions and shared knowledge on one supporting effective ways of elevating diverse student voices and leadership involvement we really want to again center this work around student voice and student engagement because we believe that we can get students really engaged come fully you know it's going to it's going to boost academic achievement it's going to boost social connection and we'll see thriving communities secondly uh we envisioned to provide staff with tools for culturally responsiveness uh curriculum courageous conversations uh advocacy relationship building combating uh implicit bias and racism you know and i want to call out implicit bias because um oftentimes uh we may not own it but we're we're we're shaped our impressions our perceptions are shaped by you know lived experiences or what we may have been exposed to as
far as mediums of communication but what can become very adverse is is for people in positions of power and influence who have implicit bias because the because the impact is greater and i call it collateral consequence that our implicit bias can have you know tremendous adverse impact upon the students we're trying to to serve but sheer microaggressions or not a real uh broader perspective around equity or inclusion can really uh impede growth and a real healthy learning experience that we all envision so we'll look at implicit bias in this work thirdly we envision to connect and work with the board and district leadership to review ways of improving systems to utilize youth voice as drivers for decision making uh centered on students and equitable outcomes for all students you know part part of social emotional
supports is about being inclusive and giving students uh opportunity to have agency and have voice and choice uh in decisions being made and that's where you get the buy-in so we we're looking forward to being in partnership thought partnership to imagine what that looks like to elevate students to where they really can own uh their learning on the school culture on the community as partners you know and we'll take not a deficits approach but we want to take an ad set approach because sometimes some of your most challenging students quote unquote are the very ones who can really be game changers in your schools and what not in the community fourthly we'll work with the district in school leadership to support youth voice to build the capacity of schools and districts to be responsive to
racially culturally diverse students staff and and families and this is important because we want to make sure that we just don't recruit or do outreach but we have strong retention and that retention is a real positive experience and we don't we don't perpetuate trauma we don't perpetuate alienation isolation so we're going to really look at how we can kind of embed uh some some systems and supports to where people feel good about the climate uh and at the building level even at the district level uh next we're looking to partner with leadership to dis deconstruct bad systems or ineffective systems rather or unhealthy school culture and to construct culturally responsive school environments this is very very important uh when you when you when you talk about culture it's not so much of what's being said
is how people feel i want to make sure that we can we can look at a culture at the building level that students and families and staff feel good about that they're like we're hearing the numbers of the increase of numbers around in person learning and so forth that level of momentum how do we capitalize upon that part of the early conversation with scott was around given this pandemic and what was unique about the pandemic is that it had all of us at home watching the news of racial injustice and racial justice protesting going on right so we couldn't we couldn't be distracted it was right in our face and part of the ongoing dialogue with students from across the state was the question how will things be when we return back to in-person learning
right and and as we are having this this racial um reckoning in our country in every state level local level um how we how we reimagining our learning environments for students so when they return back into the building or in this case virtual space you know what's different you know what's different you know so we really want to look at how do we kind of create that healthy school co-dress inclusive and that's representative of the of the demographic shifting we're seeing across our state not just unique to saint helens but across the state of oregon you know the organ we once knew is no more you know so how do we begin to come up to speed uh with the future of oregon because the future of oregon is the growing demographic shifts we're seeing
right so it's important that we imagine a school culture and climate that that honors and respects all those who make up that school community okay from from environmental to curriculum uh to the folks in the building right to just in terms of program offerings and supports these are critical when we talk about culture and school climate lastly we're looking to provide students with leadership activities developing meaningful relationships with adults academic supports and to cultivate youth identity as strategic knowledgeable and thoughtful leaders for change again goes back about kids finding agency and i tell you one of our our long-standing partners uh in portland within the david douglas school district at one of the middle schools i never forget the school was having a hard time with back to school night and really engaging parents and
more specifically parents of color and this was in the latinx and african-american community and at the time reid had staff representation that served on pta and site council on behalf of the organization and we pitched the idea to leverage students to be engaged with the outreach to get the parents out to uh parent conferences and back to school night and we leveraged the parents as a leadership opportunity and they they removed away from the robocalling and students made live calls uh to the families in the in the school and the numbers boosted up big time and we saw great uh attendance at these evening events for our most marginalized uh populations and there's just power in empowering students right to be thought partners and change agents uh to improve uh our school climate and culture
so we're looking forward to imagining what type of stratagems we can bring into the different schools we'll be serving both at the high school and middle school and the options school which is our focus for the partnership to really leverage how to elevate student voice and leadership opportunities that we believe can help boost uh the targets we talked about earlier in the presentation uh next slide please and i forgot to set my timer so i apologize i'm going over time most recently here uh what we have been doing since we signed the contract is we've had inductory meetings with district leadership teams and also the school administration i mentioned earlier again part of reaps approach is to ease our way into the partnership and to be an active listener to be an active listener to
make sure that what we're going to bring is custom to the unique needs of the schools and the students will be supporting so a lot of front work as we look at up to this point and as we conclude this school year will not just be the virtual meetings but uh some in-person presence and some bringing in some staffing to really just kind of have a visible presence uh to begin to build the context of the relationship we've been a part of the equity team meetings just listening in to the cohort of staff who are meeting regularly around equity initiatives within the district and that's been very thrilling and thought provoking and matter of fact we're going to call them one last monday talking about a range of things but again part of the goal
was was to come into space and listen and get context on the landscape of what's going on in the district and also in the schools uh thirdly uh we were pleased to be a part of the district's um uh strategic plan uh meetings with uh former superintendent jerry colonna uh a dear uh respected uh educator in my mind i've known him for years when we when he was at a beavering school district and reap was of course in the district there so we go way back so to be a part of this whole process as a new community partner to help freight uh help frame and shape the next five years or so the district is just exciting and i think it speaks the direction that you all are going as far as being more
inclusive and more thoughtful about the assets you leverage to help inform where you're going as far as priorities and values and outcomes so that's the most recent work uh next slide please um and here we have as far as next steps um and one thing in in the immediacy is uh i have in the queue to provide to scott uh we're developing a training module of content and scheduling uh to be integrated within this district school calendar so that will consist of of course the standing meetings with the equity team leadership team board to really begin to look at our content of training modules and the hours we want to propose to really kind of move folks through these types of discussions and dialogues whatnot that'll be shared with him by monday and that will
help i think given some context so we can kind of have alignment with what the priorities are with our targets and begin to move forward uh in the work uh on next tuesday the fourth uh we'll be uh meeting with the leadership team and we'll more or less roll out you know that whole plan and kind of give folks uh some some uh navigation plotting if you will in terms of where we're going and timelines and milestones and those sorts of things so we're excited about that as we come into the month of may uh looking to uh bring in the program staff at the schools we'll be supporting uh we'll begin with uh our designated manager who will be uh providing support and supervision for the actual uh two uh full-time ft they'll be
at the uh three schools uh and you know the staff will be bringing will be of people of color uh that reflect the uh student demographics of your district uh so we are excited about that um and then the last bullet point here which will be something that we're hoping to have done between now and time of fall is an equity audit uh and also a school climate and cultural assessment and in the audit more or less is a district-wide effort or tool to look at policies and practices to to ensure that there's a thoughtfulness around equity uh cultural responsiveness trauma informed consideration and so forth for example repast tremendous experience working with school districts around student handbooks looking at language and content to make sure we kind of have all those t's cross and
dies dotted ice dotted but also working at the board level around certain types of policies and resolutions that really provide the district support for at the building level right so in terms of all this going on around dei work what is the board's position on certain types of policies for example we worked with several districts in the portland metro area with the board and helped them frame a restorative practice resolution here's our restorative practice policy that as a district we're not going to have punitive approaches to student discipline but we want to create you know a more inclusive restorative culture within the district and those types of uh policies reflect values and everything is aligned and integrated so what you're hearing at the district level board level is also aligned at the building level in
terms of connecting with kids so we'll have those types of conversations uh not for sure what's all in place up at this point but these convenings and dialogues will educate reap and our team on what you'll have in place and how we can perhaps uh provide some uh some support on maybe tweaking some things or adding some things but the end goal is is to really assess and and become acquainted with potential gaps and what's working and to strengthen what's working and i think if we can approach this work from an assets basis it will be a win-win as opposed from a deficit basis what are we not doing you know but let's see what we are doing is doing that's working well and let's strengthen that right and then look at the gaps and
try to fill those gaps uh in this work so with this over this next year through june of 2022 uh we hope to be able to hit these targets and and really kind of produce some uh some short quick wins uh that would give you all the sense that it has been a good investment and you all will want to continue the uh the partnership going forward so uh i want to go ahead in there uh and take any questions uh that you all may have um and i'm solo tonight because we have competing things going on with our key staff you know so i'll do my best to field questions and provide some meaningful answers thank you for your listening here thank you mr jackson does anybody have any questions or anything i know
it's been a long day it's late in the evening i just want to say welcome aboard i i think i i really appreciate the fact that you're taking your evening and that you're working with because uh it's a need we have and we we look forward to you helping us spill it thanks so much bill appreciate your comments absolutely i'm glad to have you here i would love to ask you what kind of summer programs you will be offering that's a great question and uh i thought i had it in the slap in the slide we're doing both in person and also uh virtual well and part of the focus would be um seo work to really kind of create that sense of social connection and just to kind of check in with kids how
are you doing uh along with of course academic support because of the loss of instructional hours but more importantly checking with kids in terms of how they're doing their mental health their their social connection to re-establish that sense of community and belonging that's kind of the thing we're approaching so uh we're actually in process kelly uh finalizing uh a s i think it's gonna be a six week summer program that will be hybrid um uh reap actually is a part of a national uh collaborative that's being facilitated by the u.s department of education and i'm on the organs organs team with ode and we've been in a series of conversations around best practices for the summer programming and a lot that will be learning from national exports experts are going to inform our work in
in the fall i mean the summer time i do know a lot of outdoor activities if you want to get people get the kids moving uh it's been a lot of sitting a lot of screen time for the past year so we're trying to look at facilities uh and and grounds that that can provide that movement around hiking around soccer those sorts of things to get kids moving and of course embedding their leadership as well and as that as that schedule and program rolls out of course you all will be a part of that and your students will make sure you all get all the communication the correspondence as the school year concludes that students within your district can be a part of those in-person and also virtual programs and so forth one thing i
will i'm super excited about is our next wave of leader talk show that's done virtually and we have students that that log in from across the state from across the country even out of the country uh and it's student-led and the content is student developed and it's around issues that they care most about you know so we're trying to mix things up around academic support as well so uh stay tuned on that i think as we get into uh mid part of may late may we'll have to finalize some of our programs we can kind of share as far as the actual content and program schedule and so forth hope that answered your question yeah you did perfect thank you well you all get so quiet and nice i i since i thought scott lit
up there for a second but um this i and i i'm not familiar with it a lot but the city has just started a leadership club uh through parks and recreation and some they're trying to also develop young leaders within the community and uh i'll leave that between you and scott how to figure out if you're gonna invite them to the table but it's it's just something they're just getting started and and that's probably a good opportunity to gather um some additional participation well i couldn't agree more bill and and part of of the work we'll be doing and i share this with the equity team there will be dedicated time with what i call community mapping uh to really again become educated and informed of the assets in the community and how people feel
about the community and about the district in terms of what can we do to just kind of create more of a enriching experience for for our growing adults our young kids but also how do you leverage resources and to that point about the uh parks and rec you know we have those partnerships uh here in the portland metro area you know so uh certainly would love to have that conversation for sure well we really appreciate you mark coming out um we're excited about our partnership we see a lot of great potential for our kids and for our district so i'm excited for the future any other questions for mark i just want to say thank you for uh coming in and presenting giving us kind of a broad overview of the partnership that we have
and uh to begin um putting some of the action to the words that we've been speaking over the last several months as we've discussed equity inclusion and ways to recognize our systems impact students of every level and every diversity and really focus on where we may not have been hitting the mark previously and focusing on the places that we did hit the mark so i'm excited to see where the partnership goes awesome thank you for sharing appreciate it okay all right thank you mr jackson you have a great evening thanks so much you as well all right moving on to 5.6 uh remodel project update for the high school excellent thank you hi marlene i think i met most of you but um we'll keep it uh short i'm just gonna hand it right off
to megan she's gonna take it away thanks sure let me share my screen here make sure i have the right thing pulled up all right can y'all see that and actually i think i probably shared the wrong thing um because the first thing we want to share with you all is some 3d visualization so let me stop sharing this one and and flip over to our fly through and i think uh eric will be talking us kind of narrating our way through this everyone are you ready eric yeah are you guys all ready all right i feel like we should have some music or thing make it dramatic um all right here you go yeah well here we are we're we're in a high above the school um on the main drag and we're looking
at the the entrance parking and the the entrance plaza that has an arcing uh sidewalk that slopes down from the corner of building b and swoops down in front of the school entrance um we've got these arcs hello i am very sorry to interrupt um it's freezing up a little bit on my end i'm wondering if everybody might not mind turning off their video or some of them to help with the bandwidth because i know the big video struggles to share on the street on zoom thanks good idea i was uh and the grip was a great spot for me to stop talking too yeah it is freezing up a little bit isn't it there's a real connection through from the main entrance to the commons plaza in the back there's an amphitheater and they
both can see through to each other that brick brick main new entrance connects to the brick on the building on the existing building b it's really fun to see these schools join together we're folding the the kind of the kitchen entrance the kitchen service entrance into the the uh the the concrete sidewalk um in the in the back there's that our amphitheater these giant steps are these they [Music] layer down and around as they get closer to the the commons lots of lawn between the amphitheater and the building back of the south face of building b we really tried to pay attention to the amount of maintenance ease of mowing um where we have our levels pretty jerky pretty jerky there's we have this uh covered eve that uh in front of the commons to
provide a covered protected area in front of the amphitheater and see a little bit of the entrance ladder i'm on the other side of the of the uh the main corridor of the school the main court of the school has lots of windows see in and out eric this is super cool and i'm really sad that it's not kind of flowing through like the fly through and i'm just i'm wondering if you can maybe grab the circle and slowly pull it along and maybe we can see if we can get this done as a movie so it's kind of on a stream and ed can help get it up on the website for us because it really does give a great picture of what the school's going to look like although i'm a little i'm
a little um a little concerned that we've got even the green moss on the roof so i think we need to get up there and get that cleaned off right now that's an important detail that we hang on to i feel like the history yeah it's just an exciting project in space and it is we are losing that magic right now yeah that might be a good idea it's just kind of kicking it forward it's not tracking as much as we'd like it to and we're kind of pulling this forward well actually when i downloaded it i found myself clicking on the little dot to stop so i could look so that's all we're doing we're just giving you a chance to appreciate that's right yeah and scott i think we'll definitely make this available
um afterwards too so that people can kind of take a look at it on their own also kind of get into it in a little bit more detail but we're going we are kind of flying through some of these spaces we're in the side classrooms currently right and that is the end again we will we will [Music] we will share that link and we do have um we do have it ready so um we'll be able to get that up um to you and and up on the website um very shortly all right so the next thing we do want to share with you we want to talk through a few of the updates on the site and in the floor plans as well um so let me again share my screen make sure i
have the right one pulled up all right so on the site plan we haven't we haven't done uh too much since y'all probably last saw this um i do want to point out a few things we have i think first we'll start up here at kind of the the front area um we have taken an another look at this kind of northwest parking lot and um john pulled back a little bit on the work that we had planned there um so the majority of this you'll see is sort of existing to remain um relatively untouched just kind of how how it is the one thing we will look at adjusting up here um is the access point off of gable so we'll have one dedicated um in and then we'll have two dedicated out lanes
so that we can have you know dedicated left and right hand turning um we're also so that's widening this axis a little bit allowing a nice um ingress to the site for buses so they can kind of stop here load and unload um students can travel down you know straight into building b or down to the the main entry and then the buses will have their own dedicated egress point at this existing access off gable and then similar to before this northeast parking lot is sort of our staff and visitor parking and that hasn't changed much since you probably all last saw it just kind of really forming a nice integration with the kind of that front entry plaza a nice arrival to the school um the second piece that has probably been updated since
you all saw it we are taking us have taken another look at the fields fine-tuning those layouts and actually reusing some of the existing turf excuse me grass fields so you'll see that the baseball here is we're using that existing grass softball field here we're using that existing grass and then two brand new um fields here one one for football field one term baseball field and then the baseball fields the outfields of those are overlaid with um new soccer fields and then we do have a pretty good grade to the site so we have a retaining wall shown going between those and a path um between sort of our our baseball and softball dugouts here and then to the other fields i think that just about covers updates to the site plans any questions how
was ada access to those fields with the plan so uh as far as parking yeah parking and access for anybody that would want to go observe so we do have um we do have the path all the way through here and then um the path to the outs um and you know i think we figure on some um some ada parking up here um and then potentially i think we were considering some ada parking uh off-site if i'm remembering right yeah and i think megan i think at least on my end your cursor might be bounced around a little bit to be able to follow um you indicated the fire lane that goes along the back side of the route that would work for pedestrians once they're walking on the site to get access to
it not driving on it obviously that's just for fire trucks um but getting the parking as close as we can to anticipated areas that we want kind of controlled um public access to the fields so kind of somewhere up at that upper lot and then still down by the baseball sorry by the tennis courts we do still have some ada parking down there as well that would remain off the bottom of the screen still but that connects that path and the fire the fire access road is a nice way to create a smooth paved path it is not short right but again if we're talking about accessing these fields at the top it is at least smooth and then i do think you know megan had alluded to the working with the district about possibly
creating an alternate area of um parking off of one of the public access points from the top of the site because those fields we're putting up there you know they're up at the top so they're they're not really approximate anywhere where we would be parking on the site currently so that gives us a nice opportunity to balance those spots out we do occasionally have an ambulance drive on those upper fields with the retraining wall will they also be able to use that fire lane yeah that would be for all emergency vehicles right megan yes yeah yeah so police vehicles you know ambulance you know anything kind of in preparation or needing to service those fields they could use that part so can you guys hear me okay because everybody's voices are all kind of messy
right now but um can you go up where you can see where you were talking about the entrance for i believe for the buses to go in but where you have the the divided parts just across from building d and and really c and b there too it's a part up off a gable yeah right there um so did i hear did i hear correctly though you guys were saying that that will be the entrance for the buses in that's what we currently have planned yep okay okay so um try not to be negative but i live on this road just not too far up from there and i'm sure that if you've been here enough you've seen the psycho drivers on gable road and my only concern is that at least when right now
with buses were have been pretty much only entering you know down by our gym area before is it when people are coming too fast down gable road and they come around the corner that's just above that entrance there i'm just worried about them not having enough time to stop in all honesty with the bus suddenly right in front of them that they do have currently by being cleared down by the gym even though they're still driving too fast but at least they have that big straightaway then to see the buses so it's a corner that worries me it's not how you're doing it um maybe there's a way that we can make it wider so the buses can pull in a little more quicker but the way it'd be now is they'll almost be completely
across both lanes when somebody comes around that corner way too fast so i wish it wasn't that way and the police have been being up and down gable trying to help but anyways that's my only and you know worry about the buses entering there so and i should thank you i should clarify this is anticipated to be bus access for uh up to i think half of the buses i think five or six and then there will still be some buses that park down by the the um auditorium area and melody it might um i don't know that it's feasible because i do think some of these buses may be coming from highway 30 but if they were coming from in the neighborhood and did not have to turn left across cable across that traffic
i mean that alleviates maybe one part of your concern not all of it and again i don't know if that's something from a transportation standpoint if that's even possible but if they were all turning right into the site instead of left across cable would that alleviate some of your concerns that make all the difference in the world yeah because then the people behind him in general that is a big straightaway once you get around the corner again so in general most people are going to know that the bus was ahead of them and you know and already be slowing down for that so um we just we've even had the best change up by by me which like i said is about a half mile further up um that it had to quit coming that
direction though for anybody that would be really would have been on the opposite side of the high school because we've had people that actually ran the school buses right by them with their arm out and everything and thank goodness the kids hadn't you know stood out yet so anyway but yeah so turning in that way would be wonderful if we could make it all work out with the best you know company and everything so okay yeah and i don't i don't know but i do think that that's a legitimate concern we can't um as much as we try we're not going to change driver's behaviors but trying to account for worst case scenario and see see what we can do yeah okay yeah no no problem i agree it's actually really valid i'd almost put
a speed bump up like two prior i'm not really gonna say maybe the city would need to consider something of that as we start looking into this because there are those issues i don't know that they do it but you know given the safety issue i'll take 20 speed bumps if you guys want to get them in i'd take a couple of pittsburgh okay any other questions it's pretty similar to what we've shown before we're still working with the contractor on um getting an updated cost estimate based on the current plan and working with the users quite a bit so so real briefly i see in the plans here that there appears to be a new playground so we're back to having a playground exist at that corner over um where i think it used
to be and then also just to clarify uh the exit on the um egress there's an arrow pointing in on the exit side but i'm assuming that that arrow actually is like left turn and then right turn arrows right [Music] yes thank you okay good catch i was wondering who was gonna catch that all right trinity you will oh my gosh yes those would be left right turn out yeah and that preschool playground has been moving around um i think currently we've got it back up front much simplified we've got rid of the low brick wall and the covering i think for now the ability to maybe cover it later is that right yes sounds good megan was there anything relative to the inside of the floor plan that we were going to cover tonight
too as well or if yeah we had just a couple of things that we wanted to touch on here's our kind of overall plan we want re-orient you with the building what we really wanted to touch on uh i think probably the biggest issue we've been with dealing with is sort of this this uh more public section of the building of building a in particular um and zoning of that which uh which leads us to a discussion of restrooms and sort of um how how those are configured we did have them up sort of in the center of this block directly across from the cafeteria that does not really allow us to zone to to close off the gym and auditorium very effectively from the rest of the school we would have to open you
know if the restrooms were up here we'd want the folks in the auditorium and gyms to be able to access those so we would be looking at some zoning up farther into the school um not closing off the cafeteria so with a restroom reconfiguration um it does allow us to kind of right here have a um a security girl running across um um from all the wall that could be could be closed and um zone off just the auditorium and in gyms but still allow access to these restrooms we are showing six women's restrooms and then we're showing um in the men's restrooms we have two stalls and then two urinals and then we have a single user restroom kind of here between them we also have a smaller family restroom over tucked in kind
of uh near the gym storage behind that existing staircase so that would be again another single user restroom so we'd have a total of if i'm doing my math right 12 fixtures right there and if i'm recalling correctly we currently have i think four and four so four men's four ones so we would be we would be up um compared to to what we currently have this did uh shift our ytp and coffee cart up a little bit to be more directly across from the cafeteria seems to be laying out pretty nicely and then we have adjusted our kind of dressing rooms and makeup areas um area as well to kind of better accommodate some of the user needs there does a little single use um restroom down by the gym happen to be big
enough to become just a what you what they call the family one where a parent could go in with just the baby changing table kind of thing completely away from the rest of the recipe is that big enough to do that it we are showing a changing table in there um so it is it is large enough to to um it is an ada configuration that's accessible we have room for the changing table that would kind of fold up against the wall when not in use and you know toilet sink grab bars great everything you may need in there thank you very much on that one yeah any other thoughts questions comments so this area that we have now for the restrooms for this section um are we losing total number of of fixtures throughout
the building in this process by re-apportioning this stuff here no we're we're actually i'm believe we're gaining fixtures if not staying the same okay there is that same code required minimum number based on the number of occupants that still stays there we wouldn't go below that of course sometimes we have a few additional and with a site this large we have options for how we distribute those trying to do it as evenly as possible of course so this might just be redistributing them throughout the school a little bit differently on the planet it's kind of hard to see like where the entry is and is it just an open hallway and then you walk in and move to the left and right is that oh for the for the restrooms correct yeah we we have
our lovely firewall um symbol here so yes there is um right here is is an opening um and i'll kind of draw a line where that opening is right there um so you you'd walk in to this this small vestibule here and then have your choice of going left right or or center essentially um and because this is a fire rated wall we would have a um a an emergency grill fire or overhead grill that would come down in case of fire okay so then when you were talking about locking the portion of the building off for public activities this is just a different kind of plan than we've seen before so i'm wondering where that gate is was it the yellow yeah because that was at first i assumed it was all the red
the firewall no that would be the yellow okay yep all right thank you okay thank you so the the gates that would come down in the case of a fire is that a manual release or is that an automatic release uh that would be it would be tied to the fire alarm system so it would be a an automatic and if it comes down while someone is so we do have to accommodate for allowing people to get out during there so it's going to end up having to have a swinging door in it that allows people out it's a ends up being a slightly complicated configuration where it's a combination of a coiling door that comes down and a springing door that allows people out because you're exactly right we have to assume that there
may be people in that bathroom when the fire alarm is triggered um and so we still have to allow people out we can show you pictures of what we're talking about it's they're they are a little unusual um but we can we can get you pictures of what that would look like too but we would not trap anybody in the bathroom in the event of a fire that much i promise okay that was my only concern yep that's very any other questions or comments on the plan things you want to make sure we're thinking about as we continue to develop these thank you very much for that part i think that'll be awesome and be able to have the gate there too for closing it off when we need to i'm wondering if we have
any other public sessions or feedback where we'll get to see the final plan or or even at this stage are we gonna kind of look at it closer and pick it apart again or where is that happening yeah so um we can take a look at our um you know our design schedule so the short answer is there's always a chance to get public feedback and input we're always looking for that we're coming up on the end of our design development phase where we're you know if you remember right that's where we're kind of making sure that all the relationships and the details with the equipment are figured out and then we're going into our construction documents phase which is the longest phase of the of the design process but where we're kind of working
on the details more so there's still certainly opportunity and we do definitely want to provide as much public input and feedback opportunity as appropriate so we can definitely look to accommodate whatever it is the district's looking for i mean the short answer is we're here to help explain the building to you as a group however and whenever you see fit we have a lot of opportunities especially when we're talking about kind of more smaller scale kind of fine tuning of the plans if you will um hopefully as we get further along the process we talked about you know these adjustments are maybe getting smaller and smaller and those are easier to accommodate so we definitely lean on our district leadership team to tell us when it's appropriate to share out but we're available anytime yep
if that answers your question kelly i'm not sure kelly we have regular meetings too and if you're available we can certainly get you in to listen in on some and provide feedback too if there's some specific areas that you're wanting to to take a look at we've you've done that for a few so i i did you know i feel badly eric um you know grand repeal i i think you know it's what a three minute video at most ed's already loaded it up if you'd like either ed or i could share our screen and you could narrate it if you want to give it the big grand reveal eric i think it's pretty spectacular i'd love our community to see yeah are you still with us eric he may be yeah no for sure
i'm game for sure all right i i'll go ahead and share my screen and hopefully it'll it'll do it so let's give it a give the old college try i don't have a screen oh yeah here we go okay can you see me can you see it yeah gotcha and i'll try to make it large hopefully it'll be oh well maybe not it's a it's a a postage stamp right now doesn't look like zoom's going to let us do it i'm going to have to defer ed [Music] leave it to the professionals hey look at that i'm just going to keep quiet so i think i do think that this with this level of detail we do finally start to see the vision that we had at the beginning which is kind of making one
school out of all of these buildings right absolutely yeah it's one of the biggest design challenges of the project is stitching all of those differently timed buildings and the ones with a different character together so for us this was really exciting to start pulling it off yeah it's just as exciting for us as it is for you that is for sure aesthetically last time in our build for the middle school there was a lot of images that were shown on the inside and then we i guess bid out or didn't do those um how many of these things that we see in the decorations and the lighting and such that we are we going to actually do kelly has hard questions so in in our mind if it was up to us we're doing everything
that we're showing you um part of it is going through that cost estimating and making sure so things like the the acoustic treatment and the ceiling here and the light fixtures that you're seeing here those are things that we're proposing and we're it you know based on our estimator in the budget but um sometimes when things come in at midday we have options and alternates we need to look at we're trying to always make sure and focus on keeping the priority interior design elements in the project so the short answer is in a perfect world everything we're showing you gets in there in the end but sometimes there are value engineering and adjustments made as the budget gets developed that we do have to make changes too i don't that's a tough question thank you
i should say it is beautiful so your designer is doing a good job did you want me to rewind it to any particular point or i think that's good unless somebody wanted to see a specific area thank you okay i'll stop sharing that a lot smoother thank you very much again leave it to the pros yeah okay um but yeah i mean i think kelly two to your question as you're looking through if there's specific things in particular you know we're showing you know um some wood cut lettering in the front vestibule that we think could be a really cool way to sort of represent and show the school name that final design may not look exactly like that you know that's kind of where we're starting right now and what we're kind of thinking
of as we develop it again with district feedback and input from the contractor on pricing and cost some of those things do definitely flux um we get the essential stuff first um and then we work with the with from a design standpoint we hold on for all of the fun stuff that we can get in the budget um but it's still you know the program and the function is a priority so but yeah so that sounds good i think we probably need to let everybody go i think our portion is done unless there's any other questions and you all have access to the video any other questions or comments of course if we go through dr wagner or any of the district court team those will definitely get back to us so thank you very
much thank you always fun to have you here showing us all the neat changes all right uh we are moving on to superintendent reports yeah and i'll try to move ourselves along so i see some some people getting a little bit droopy after the meeting but some exciting exciting things that we've got going love the building our relationship and partnership with reap is fantastic and so it's just it's just some pretty exciting times even though it's been hard through the pandemic um we're gonna we're gonna come out in great shape so let me share my screen i'm gonna do a kind of a quick um update to returning back to school essentially um what we're finding is kids are excited to be back as much as our staff are excited uh we're seeing um you
know significantly better engagement than what we did pre-pandemic people are just happy to be at school and we're we're looking forward to that continuing um can't see my there we go so i share this every time you know we've we we're moving around through here but i always want to point out this light blue piece here and essentially what it says is once we get back to in-person instruction then we're going to stay in in-person instruction unless there's significant spread within our schools we haven't seen that significant spread we've seen some students that have tested positive um generally they they're feeling ill and they're not coming into school we have had a few cases where they have come in and then begin feeling ill at school because of the safety protocols the face masks the
social distancing um that were that we're doing they're not considered exposures to other students just in the manner that we've got schools set up and we follow guidance from public health we check have our nurse check on every case and we run those down to determine whether we need to notify families or not we generally try to notify our families if there's been a student with a case and at this point i can't recall any that have been in a case where we've quarantined um large numbers we've had a few at lewis and clark but not not many beyond that i say that um because i get asked all the time are we going to go back to in-person learning in the fall and at this point as a district we're planning to go back
to in-person instruction five days a week beginning in the fall we're planning on going back to in-person instruction and i won't say like normal because i don't think we know what normal is but we do plan on going back full day every day in the fall unless something drastic changes and i think that's that's kind of the growing consensus along educators so the one thing that we're trying to do and you heard this earlier from the reports from schools we're trying to take what we learned um during the pandemic and pl and apply it to the coming year so let me show you a little real quickly where we're at as far as um our trends go we are green and you can see we've now turned the corner we've got a downward trend with
the cases per hundred thousand but um converse to that we have multnomah and washington county trending the opposite way and if you look at the way our graph goes we tend to follow to some degree where washington county multnomah county are we have a few blips i would say that's generally because we have a smaller number of people live in our county and an outbreak will show a much larger jump in our cases per hundred thousand but as a whole we're kind of trending and this is you know where we identified earlier on we need to make sure that we're communicating with our families if we want to have um graduation with parents able to participate if we want to have you know basketball wrestling where kids can compete and community can watch we really
need to do everything we can to bring these numbers down wear masks social distance make good choices with gatherings those types of things and get vaccinated and then this is our case per uh this is our test positivity rate and we're above five percent and really what research is telling us is anything about five percent we know that there's probably a significant number of cases beyond that just haven't tested or haven't been identified so that's always a concern we're above that so we're working on this trying to hopefully convince community to continue to hang in there as we work our way out of the pandemic and we have a number of other projects in the works as far as planning for state assessments which the state has asked the federal government for a reprieve and
we were not granted that so we're coming up ways to be the least intrusive to allow for state test state assessment still access federal dollars that are connected to that in addition we're also finalizing our decision on which uh online program we're going to use for our virtual academy we're down to a few and when we get that down to what we plan on using we'll have a presentation for the board so that's kind of what we've got going for returning back to school we're we're back and happy to have kids back and continue to look for ways to to add students back into our programs and time i'd like to skip the employee appreciation week i'm going to kind of pass that on to trin before we do that i want to mention the
district business which happens to be the school-based health center and if you recall gosh about a year ago katie and her team brought together a proposal to do research in the viability of a school-based health center located at the high school we know there's tremendous need in particular around mental health and dental and students in the secondary schools particularly again at the high school aren't able to access the chicago we as center as we'd like so they've done a lot of research they've done a lot of work we've had multiple meetings i think we even have a few board members that have been participating in those meetings and really determined that it would be a great opportunity for us to partner with the community and stand up a school-based health center at the high school
for for our students and community access so what we need is um the school board to throw in their support with a vote and that's down at the action item hopefully the board will see that that's something that we need to do and continue the work and then we can have tren come in and sign off on the letter that we can have sent out shortly so do you guys have any questions on school-based health center and i know katie could probably answer many more questions better than i um i just know it's going to be a great thing for our kids okay while hearing none then um i'd like to kind of pass this on to trend but first just want to say the the staff we have in st helens is done a
phenomenal job dedicated and really gone above and beyond um in many aspects as we're trying to meet all kids needs social emotional instructional and and hold kind of community together and so you know i appreciate all of our teachers not just our licensed teachers but we've got next week that's designated specifically for those folks we want to honor them all year round but this is a time that as a board we can recognize those folks so trent i'll hand it on over to you well thank you mr stockwell so we will move to uh 7.1 so that i can read the whereas all right licensed employee appreciation week declaration whereas teachers mold future citizens through guidance and education and whereas teachers encounter students of wildly differing backgrounds and whereas our country's future depends upon providing
quality and education to all students and whereas teachers spend countless hours preparing lessons evaluating progress counseling and coaching students and performing community service and whereas our community recognizes and supports its teachers in educating the children of this community now therefore be it result that the st helens school board of directors proclaims may 3rd through the 11th 2021 to be licensed employee appreciation week and be it further resolved that the st helens board of directors strongly encourages all members of our community to join with it in personally expressing appreciation to our teachers for their dedication and devotion to their work adopted this 28th day of april 2021 so do i have a motion to approve the declaration i'll make a motion a second right moved and seconded i'll go in order of my screen ryan hi
kelly hi phil and melody hi and tran is a emphatic hi so uh thank you teachers we really do appreciate all the work that you do and uh clearly we couldn't do any of this without you so uh you definitely deserve a whole lot of accolades all right uh we added 7.2 to the action so 7.2 was to recommend moving forward on a letter to support the high school health center it's been moved all second and seconded any discussion on this prior to vote i am kind of wondering like is there anything more to it or do we have a chance to back out if we don't want it or are we just saying yes let's explore it we've done significant work on exploring it and we're at the point where this is wanting to
move forward and needing the partnership so this is the tail end of that work kelly i do have a copy of or a draft of the letter i could share really quickly if you'd like to see it would that be helpful yeah it's just that we didn't have anything in our actual packet for it so it'd be nice to see absolutely and and again this is something that was identified right at the end of the day this afternoon and we wanted to make sure that we were able to get it in for the final piece so here's the letter we've made concern on the outstanding school district 502 we're pleased to support the development operations school-based health center in partnership with columbia health services beginning in the 21 22 school year the board has heard
the findings from the needs assessment and planning process and we believe the school-based health center will support the health well-being and academic success of the community any further comments or questions on it other than we're going to not have my name be kennedy that's what i just said put that r back in there all right so it's been move seconded discussion uh i'll go in order of my screen ryan hi kelly [Music] there we go and trainers and i all right so action items are done thank you everyone uh upcoming meeting input um so do we have anything specific for may 12. um we may have a swearing-in of board member members we'll have three i think that's that'd be may or do we do that in july that's july we just congratulate him i
will say it's possible i'm going to miss that meeting it is my kiddo's birthday so i may or may not be available so that means ryan get ready i'll be ready all right well if we have no further input then it sounds like we have come to a wonderful conclusion to a good meeting so uh any other input questions or anything else move to adjourn i moved have a good night everybody we'll see you next time thank you you
