So, you guys asked that um we kind of look into a little bit more about doing the superintendent evaluation and the ways to go about doing that. Um so, a couple things that I did, I reached out to some staff. I also reached out to a couple listservs that I'm on, um Oregon School Personnel Association, Oregon School Board Association. Um most of the templates, and I've shared templates with you before um the meeting our last meeting, but I threw in the OS one again. They all kind of go over the same stuff. Everybody's looking for the same kind of input, and some um of those evaluations are just worded a little differently, or they're um summarized a little bit differently. So, I kind of took the best of all of them, and I went over

with Roy, and just kind of tried to make it a little bit easier to kind of understand and be a little bit more visually um not so complicated to look at. Um and just kind of go over some information, how we've done it in the past. Um So, the reasons why you do a an evaluation of your superintendent is um one of the main things is kind of protect yourself as a board. Um if some an issue were to arise with your superintendent down the road, they're going to pull past evaluations and then what and the things that you guys looked at, talked about, encouraged the superintendent to do or not do. So, we always want to keep that kind of um on file. Um it's just a I don't How often you guys watch

the news? You don't pay attention, but sometimes some superintendents are let go in the middle of their contract or whatever. And so, the evaluation kind of helps with that process of making sure everybody's on track. It's also to help um that you guys are all aligning with what you want in this district. So, um the visions and the goals, um what you want him to be accounted for, whether that, you know, student um testing, you know, I mean, what what are the things that you're wanting to see out of your superintendent cuz ultimately he's your employee for the district. So, uh once we get those results back from when you do your evaluation. So, the first thing I gave you was um just kind of what each area These are questions just to ask yourself

when you're going in to evaluate your superintendent. You're not going to know all this. And actually, Shawn, I'm probably going to exempt you from the superintendent evaluation cuz it's not really fair for you to do it when you've only been here what? The second meeting? Um but this is a good thing for you to go through. I'm just trying to help you out. You want to get exempted. UM SO >> WELL, BUT BUT YOU know depending on what you're hearing, you know, cuz one of the things I value you bring to this table is your connection to the tribe. Um you know, and so if you're hearing some things out there that can improve and >> Yeah, by all rights, you can. But you can easily But I also you can't exempt yourself cuz you

have not been a full board member for uh since July 1st. So, it's kind of um you can you do have the right to exempt yourself from it. But if you want to participate, you're also welcome to do so. >> note, his daughter's helping with softball and she didn't even know he was a board member. So, um and just looking it over, it's kind of comparable to also the OSBA when you're going to see some of the same type of um you know, like the vision and strategic strategic leadership. And the rating guide, you know, one being oh, needs to work on, five being great great. Um so, what we do then is after you guys turn in your evaluations to me, I score get them all scored out and then basically we go through

and give it a So, nobody's really identified in the evaluation process unless you ask to be or want to be or put your name to something. Um and then we we'll have an executive session next month and we will go over those um each area and where how how um Mr. Gauss was evaluated. And then we also come up with a letter that's kind of public knowledge of his evaluation because we can um we should do that for the public and for parents and for everybody to be aware that yes, you've done your job of evaluating your superintendent. This was the outcome and um that this is where he's at and you know, if there were some key factors that you want him to work on, want that list if we can do that as

well. So, I think I gave an example to you in the work session packet of like last year's letter that went out um for for him or it was posted on our website. We didn't like send it out to every parent or anything. We just posted it on our website. And um how the results came in, how I tallied those and then again, we go through all that through in executive session. And with Mr. Gass, um so because we've used the OSBA template for last few years, if you decide to change to the one that I presented to you tonight, you will have to vote in that in regular session. I put it in as a motion to change the template to what was presented tonight. Uh if you want to stay with OSBA, you

can. Uh but that's kind of where we're at. That's where our two choices are. And again, they're really similar. I just think that OSBA's it's it's kind of hard for people um Is this the OSBA? >> No, that's the one we came up with. Okay. >> Yeah, so it's kind of similar but OSBA's is >> That's the OSBA one. This is way more wording in the OSBA one and I think that you can get lost in translation. So, I tried to just simplify it a little bit more, focus in on those key areas, what you need to be looking at. You've been through several, so that's why I thought your input would be good. >> Yeah. I like the new version. Yeah, it's a little bit more >> Correct. The other one is too wordy.

Yeah, it's just it's kind of hard for everybody to follow like what they're supposed to be doing and everything. So, um that's kind of where we're at with that. So, well, I think this is just to simplify the process and cuz we're on also a time constraint, I think I'll send that evaluation out to you. I'll get it out to you by the end of this week, beginning of next week. Give you a couple weeks to work on it. But, I'll probably do it by paper, and then next year, if we want to keep the same template stuff, we'll do a good I can have it available for you in in a Google format as well. So, I'm going to make it simpler, but Do you have any Do you have Do you have any

questions about that or I have a random question. Just speaking of violations, do teachers get evaluated, Mike? Mhm? Say that again. Yeah, they're on a They're depending on their status, they'll either get evaluated every year or every other year. I was just placing, negotiating, and then then I was thinking, well, if they get evaluated, all of that should Yeah, it doesn't, ironically, but it doesn't. Okay. Um I got stories for you on Do you have like a formal evaluation day, like where you go and watch a teacher or anything like that? >> Uh-huh. Yeah, you do. Yeah, they do they do uh unannounced and announced evaluations. They'll meet with a pre-conference, and uh then they'll go and watch a lesson, and give it feedback. And in fact, our June and August training is retraining on

what's called the Danielson rubric, which is an academic framework. Uh that That's that group I was just meeting with. Um We're aligned in You'll see that next month, and I'll do a presentation kind of talking about the new oriented accountability, and how we're tying that to our instructional framework, and how that works with interim assessment, and how it all I'm trying to make it all align, so that we can have common language throughout grade level teams, departments, in that process. So, um That's really good. How many How many classroom teachers are there? Here? Ooh, classroom teachers, I'm like just regular classroom? That you would have to come and evaluate, yeah. Oh, well, we evaluate everybody. Which is So, like your speech language person, your special ed person, Wow. we divide them up, you know, like

Zach will do all our sped folks and our sped IAs. Jeremy does his middle high. Uh Sarah does all the elementary. It's a little different on the contract, you know, how you guys renew contracts in March. Where they're at on that probationary level kind of dictates to on their um where they where they fall on their evaluation cuz some teachers not every year might be every other year kind of thing uh like a legacy teacher or something, but um like if you're a probationary one, you're going to be on a pretty tight evaluation schedule for that whole year, like and then It is strange cuz when I was a classroom teacher, I didn't get evaluated except for my first year. I don't know what happened. Well, the systems have changed, hopefully for the better. I

too as a rookie teacher got the drive-by, as I called it. Didn't run with scissors and didn't make any waves. Things were great. You know, it's it's way more um you know, coaching around instructional practices. You know, it's following the curriculum. You know, those types of things cuz small districts, you can create gaps and holes. People do their own show. My input is uh thank you, April. This looks so much better than than the uh new art. Is that showing up on Renee's screen, too? Is that Is that Renee, is that disc lit up? It worked perfectly. Let's get better. Make sure we're all plugged in. So, are we We're voting on this tonight? Yeah, but we'll have to do it in regular session. So, I just wanted to in case you guys wanted to

you know, change anything or whatever had additional questions, I just wanted to have a little more time to talk about it. That's why we I don't know work session or if you had a whole another template you wanted to look at or something of it. I think we're getting where where we need to be. We do have to do his evaluation by June 30th um for his contract um every year. So, that's why we'll I'll get it out to you and then we'll re- do an executive session next month to get it done by June. We don't have anything else for the good of the order. We'll adjourn the work session. Have a break. Somebody can go have some cake, Renee. Ooh, cake. I'll bring it to you. So, we'll adjourn that work session at

50.
