The first thing I want to say is that we are extremely proud of the young adults you guys have become and we can't wait for you to go to the middle school and do great things. Clearly from all the accolades you received from your teachers and

Mrs. Sacca, you are a very academic group and you I look forward to the great things that you guys will do in the future. The one thing I will tell you is when things get tough up here, you always have Mr. Poland. But the one thing you never lose are those three teachers down there and Mrs. Sacca. So if you ever need anybody, all you have to do is walk across the parking lot and we are so excited for you guys to move to the middle school and I hope you have a great summer. >> [applause] >> The next two awards are the American Legion Award and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Award. Joining us this evening to present those awards is Mr. Ryan Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong is a 34-year member of the American Legion

and a veteran of the US Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, and United States Navy Reserve during three war eras, including the Cold War, the Gulf War, and the war on terror. His hometown American Legion post is post 15 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and he's been a member of the Cumberland American Legion post 400 in Carmichael for about 25 years. Mr. Armstrong is a past state officer for the American Legion, Department of Pennsylvania, serving as department judge advocate from 2006 to 2022. He's married to Green County native na- native, the former Judy Lewis Armstrong. And by the way, that's our beloved Miss Judy, guys. And has two adult daughters, both graduates of the Carmichael Area School District. He's a graduate of West Virginia University and The Ohio State University, and a member of the Pennsylvania bar.

Mr. Armstrong currently works as an in-house attorney and counsel for a well-known regional retail company with corporate offices in Morgantown and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. At this time, we're pleased to welcome Mr. Armstrong to present THESE AWARDS. >> [applause] [cheering] >> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I MADE A BIG MISTAKE FOR NOT TO read all of that. It makes me sound vastly more important than I actually am. So, typically, uh this award is given past years by um the Righteous Landing American Legion post and post 400 here in Carmichael alternating. Um this year, apparently, um no one could come. Uh am a member of Post 400, as she said, but uh I was uh uh detailed to come here and and aggravate you folks tonight with this uh these awards. So, the American Legion School Medal Award Program was

actually started in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania American Legion in 1922. By 1926, the national organization, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and it's still there, um picked the program up uh because they thought it was uh a fantastic uh way to support our children and youth and to encourage them to live by uh or strive to uh achieve the uh qualities that the award recognizes. So, Oh, forget it. So, this is your last year, you'll have to be you all one day. So, the purpose of the program is to promote wholesome ideas and active citizenship among our children and youth. The qualities recognized are qualities that every citizen of the United States, or possibly even the world, should strive for. Uh these are not unusual qualities, uh but they will serve uh an individual well if they can

um >> [clears throat] >> if they can cultivate uh one or more of these over the course of their lives. These qualities will become more important to you all as you grow up and uh actually have life experience that uh that you can see how these apply. So, the first one is courage, which is bravery, determination, and force to do what is right. Patriotism, something that is unfortunately sorely missing, I think, these days uh as we've fractured as a nation, the idea of being a loyal American and living by the Bill of Rights, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, etc. And the willingness to defend the principles ensconced in the United States Constitution. Honor. This is probably the one I think is most important. Honor is the recognition and the will to do what is

right. It requires a highly developed moral character and high standards of conduct. Also, it requires devotion to duty. Like my one of my services. Core values of the United States Coast Guard are honor, respect, and devotion to duty. The next [laughter] quality is scholarship. You're all familiar with that. That's getting good grades so you can um get an extra I don't know. I don't know what you kids do these days. You know shakes. Um my my girls are all grown up. I've lost track of what the kids want now. The next quality is leadership and this will particularly as you grow older, you'll see uh the importance of this and the ability to work with others. Probably one of the most important qualities in a professional or work life according to former President Theodore Roosevelt.

And the ability to work together to towards a common goal and work in harmony. Finally, the last is service. In other words, recognizing that selfishness and I get this this idea of I get what I want. I got mine. So what everybody else? That's that's not one of the qualities that this encourages, rather it's the opposite. Kindness, unselfishness, and protection of the weak, like the medieval knights of old. So, >> [screaming] >> those are the qualities that the awards recognizes, and it's my understanding that the students themselves vote on the recipients of these awards. And as you may notice, I am not a lady. Um but the American Legion Auxiliary, which started as a ladies organization, is no longer just for ladies. Um in 1919, after in 1990 2019, after 100 years, it finally opened

up to uh all um genders, shall we say. It's no longer just for the ladies. So, the first award, um let's do the ladies first. American Legion Auxiliary presents this certificate to KENNEDY JONES. >> [applause] [applause] >> IN RECOGNITION OF THE OUTSTANDING attributes demonstrated leading to the awarding of the school award from American Legion Auxiliary Post 400, Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, by me. Hello, Kennedy. So, here's your certificate. Please. Here is your certificate. And I hope you treasure that. Um congratulations. >> [applause] >> All right. In conclusion, um the certificate of distinguished achievement is awarded to Aiden Walker. >> [applause] >> In recognition >> [applause] >> of the high qualities just recited, which are necessary to the proper preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of our government and advancement of our society. Award is made by

Post 400, Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. Once again, I'm going to your certificate and the medal. >> [applause] >> So, I think that concludes my task. I would like to thank the school uh for the reciprocity and support of this American Legion program, and I wish the best of luck to all you graduates tonight. Thank you. [applause] >> The Carmichaels Area Elementary Center Good Citizenship Award embodies the traits of service, character, and responsibility. This year, I'm pleased to present the Good Citizenship Award TO EMMA BOWDEN. >> [cheering] [applause] >> AT THIS TIME, OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, MR. POLAND, will share a few words and receive our fifth grade class. >> Thank you, Ms. Sacco. Uh first, I do want to thank a couple group of people. These fine ladies right here, the teachers. You fifth graders, we always

we talked a little bit 2 weeks ago about how important they have been instrumental in your your life this year, as well as all the teachers down there and Ms. Sacco. So, can we please, parents and students, give the teachers of the fifth grade A ROUND OF >> [applause] >> EXACTLY, I DON'T WANT YOU GUYS TO GET UP, BUT I WANT YOU TO PEEK AROUND. You You see all these people in here? These are your people. They're here for you guys, right? I always say being a parent is the hardest thing in the whole world to do. So, why don't we give your parents and your families and all the people that are here for you guys a round of applause, PLEASE? >> [applause] >> THANK YOU GUYS FOR showing up for them. That's That's

That's very important. So, again, my name is Mr. Poland. I'm the middle school principal. Good evening, families, students, teachers, and honored guests.
